Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah “touches the deepest, most tender corner of our hearts” (Tami Hoag). Her last novel, Between Sisters, was chosen by CBS’s The Early Show as one of the best books of the summer. Now she returns with The Things We Do for Love—a poignant, evocative story that celebrates the magic of motherhood, the joys of coming home, and the price we so willingly pay for love.

The youngest of three daughters, Angela DeSaria Malone was always “the princess” of the family, a girl who thought she knew how her life would unfold. High School. College. Marriage. Motherhood. That was how it had gone for her sisters, her cousins, her friends. But it didn’t work out that way for Angie. She and her husband tried desperately to have a child; year after year, their perfectly decorated nursery remained empty. Finally, their marriage collapsed under the weight of lost dreams.
After the divorce, Angie moved back to her hometown and rejoined her loud, loving, slightly crazy family. In West End, a place where life rises and falls in time with the tides, she will find the man who once again will open her heart to love . . . and meet the girl who will change Angie’s life.
Lauren Ribido lives in a rundown apartment in a bad part of town with a mother who cares more about her next drink than about her daughter. At seventeen, Lauren knows that her aspirations in life may never come to pass.

From the moment they meet, Angie sees something special in Lauren. They form a quick connection, this woman who is desperate for a daughter and the girl who has never known a mother’s love. When Lauren is abandoned by her mother, Angie doesn’t hesitate to offer the girl a place to stay.
But nothing could have prepared Angie for the far-reaching repercussions of this act of kindness. In a dramatic turn of events, she and Lauren will be tested in a way that mothers and daughters seldom are. Together they will embark on an intensely moving, deeply emotional journey to the very heart of what it means to be a family.

This book was so heart touching, I couldn't put it aside until I finished it. I would recommend it to anyone who has children or ever wanted them.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Story about Loving and Being Loved.......2007-01-19

Kristin Hannah is the bestselling author of many novels including Comfort and Joy, Magic Hour and Between Sisters. After reading her work, you wouldn't know that she started her career as a lawyer. During a difficult pregnancy she decided to pick up a project that her mom and she had started while her mom was ill. Her mom always knew her daughter was destined to be a writer, not a lawyer. Kristin's ability to portray realistic, well-rounded characters shines through again in The Things We Do for Love.

Angela Desaria Malone lost her father, a newborn daughter and her husband (to divorce) all within a short period of time. After several failed attempts to have a child, Angela and her husband try the adoption route. Unfortunately, this too fails at the very last moment and proves to be a crushing blow to Angela. The grief of these losses has brought her life to a halt.

Finally, unable to deal with her old life, she moves back to her family's cottage by the sea in West End, Washington, where she grew up. She hopes she will be able to figure out where her life should go from here. Mending a broken heart is not always easy but it's made even more difficult by her loud, but good-intentioned, Italian family who seem to show up on her doorstep whenever they think they are needed, whether Angela feels that way or not. In addition to dealing with her family, there is also a family business, an Italian restaurant called Desaria's, which is in danger of going under. Angela decides to user her advertising skills to jump in and try to help save it. Putting all of her time and energy into this new project helps her forget about her grief a little at a time.

Lauren Ribido is a teenager with no family to speak of and is in danger of being evicted from the rundown apartment she shares with her basically absentee mother. After being laid off from her job at the local pharmacy, she plasters flyers on cars in the neighborhood in an effort to find work. Dealing with an alcoholic, non-working, almost non-existent mother, the boyfriends she brings home and the landlord's demands for their late rent are only some of Lauren's struggles. She has worked hard to get into the right high school and has big plans for her future, but the adversities she faces may keep her from reaching her goals.

Angela needs a child to mother. Lauren needs a mother's love. Their meeting was meant to be. What starts out as an employer/employee relationship quickly blossoms into so much more and through various trials they find out how to truly fulfill each other's needs. Together they will both learn to trust and love again.

The Things We do for Love is a heartwarming story with some expected, and some unexpected, twists. The story will keep you wondering what will happen next in the character's lives, even after the final page. I would definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book & the characters!.......2006-10-17

This is the 3rd Kristin Hannah book I've read (just discovered her this past year) & this is probably my favorite so far. The characters were very believable & I really enjoyed reading about the DeSaria family, the chemistry between Con & Ange & the changes that the main characters went through & the strength they had. Wonderful book! I was sad to say good-bye to them when I came to the end of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Feels Good.......2006-08-16

Perfect feel good story. Nothing schmaltzy or too heavy here. Just a good family drama, with warmth and humor while exploring the way we love each other at different ages and stages of life. The storyline involves a lovely Italian family set in the Seattle area. Of course there is food and affection with that set up but Angie has a broken heart and needs to heal. Will her family help her mend and ease the memory of an infant daughter who failed to thrive or will she trust her own instincts and reach out to another family? Through mistakes and unfortunate circumstances, situations we cannot control~just live through ~ Krising Hannah once again moves us with her words and lets us see that love finds a way every time.

4 out of 5 stars A Tear-jerker!.......2006-05-31

While taking care of a three and half year old boy who got sick with a stomach bug over the holiday weekend ~~ I needed something light to read in between laundry duty and dishes and nurturing a little boy. I picked this one up and was engrossed into the story till 1 a.m.! It's been awhile since I've been able to do something like this!

This is probably my first Kristin Hannah book ~~ and I was leery of picking it up since I am on a roll with my nonfiction reading. I am glad though that I picked it up! It's been ages since I have laid in bed and finished a book in hours!

This book is about Angie who returned home to her small town after leaving a high profile advertising career in Seattle. She just went through a divorce ~~ not a bitter divorce, just a very sad one. She had given up her dreams of having a baby after suffering for years with miscarriages, infertility issues and losing her little baby, Sophia. She comes home to where her family is and rediscovers her dreams. Lauren, the other main character in the story, is a loveless seventeen year old, who has worked very hard in maintaining a scholarship at the local private school. She works full time after school and is dating the star of the football team, David. Lauren and Angie discover one another and helped each other to heal.

It is a beautiful story ~~ lots of promises and hope and joy. There is sadness and tears but it is a happy ever ending story ~~ which is what I like to read once in awhile! The scenery and the food descriptions sound wonderful ~~ and it sure is a great escape novel! =0)

This is a perfect read for any time, especially in the summertime when it's hot out and you need to keep still to keep cool! I plan on reading another one of this author's books if I see them around!

Louisiana men? Honey, talk about the Big Easy...

JoAnn Ross Cajun Heat Bad boy bayou movie star Gabe Broussard has come back to his Louisiana hometown for some peace, but things only heat up the minute he reunites with Emma Quinlan. With her lush body and hearty appetite, she's no Hollywood matchstick, and oh cher, does he like that. Emma just has to stop thinking about her former Cajun crush, so she makes a list of all the things she wishes he would do to her and buries it in a graveyard at night. Except it's the wrong list—Gabe finds the right one, and he intends to fulfill every blissful one of them…

Nancy Warren You Give Me Fever Acclaimed playwright Devon Burnett hasn't had a hit in five years. That's why he's rented a small bayou cottage, hoping to find his muse again. Maya Poe knows exactly who Devon is, and she understands all about running away. Since the accident that ended her modeling career, she's had nothing to do with men…until a chance midnight rendezvous with Devon leaves her hungry for more of his bad boy charms and has Devon eager for the story to continue…

E.C. Sheedy In Good Hands How does Esme Shane let her sister talk her into these things? Sketching a zillionaire's Gulf Island hideaway in exchange for a free vacation is turning out to be no day at the beach. Dane McCoy is just too distracting--and just too sexy for his jeans. She's about to meet him for beignets and café au lait on the patio. But breakfast in bed is a whole lot more tempting. Dane has to be the hottest man under the Louisiana sun…

There's a bad moon rising on the bayou…and the Bad Boys have never been better…

I like my bad boys any way I can get them, and Kensington Brava sure hit the nail on the head with BAYOU BAD BOYS. What could possibly go wrong with three stories featuring ultra-alpha males, southern drawls, and women with brains and beauty? With this book, the answer is not a thing!

I've always loved JoAnn Ross's writing style. She has a very distinctive voice, and it shines through loud and clear in CAJUN HEAT. For Gabriel Broussard, leaving his hometown of Blue Bayou was the answer to his prayers. He couldn't wait to hightail it out of there all those years ago, and he's certainly made the best of his time away from home. An actor with all the fame, fortune, and money a guy could ask for, he's been living his dreams-until two dates with a world-renowned actress somehow turned into an "engagement" and then was broken due to his quote-unquote "addiction to kinky sex." What was kinky were the pairs of underwear getting thrown over the gates of his estate, but Gabe can't really complain. What he can do is turn his back on the press who are hounding him and head back to Blue Bayou for some rest, relaxation, and recovery.

Except Blue Bayou still has one thing he's never forgotten-Emma Quinlan. As soon as Emma lays eyes on the man she's never stopped loving, she knows there's still something between them. Unfortunately, she can't decide if it's unfinished business due to Gabe's leaving all those years ago without a proper goodbye, or the heat and desire she still feels for him. Is there any way at all that a small-town girl at home in the bayou could have a future with one of Hollywood's darlings? She's determined, almost reluctantly, to find out.

Nancy Warren, one of my favorite authors, brings us YOU GIVE ME FEVER, a real humdinger of a story that burns up the pages. Lucy Charles is a history lecturer at the University of Toronto, where she lives. She'd recently began researching her own family's background all the way back to the 1700s, and with thorough investigation had tracked living relatives-however distant-to Louisiana. Determined to have more to include in the family newsletter than recycled recipes, she sets off from Canada to the New Orleans Garden District-and is struck speechless not only by the Tara-like mansion she arrives at, but also by the drop-dead-gorgeous man in the garden who's none other than her very-much removed cousin, Claude LeBlanc. Suddenly, vacationing with very distant relatives while researching family history takes on a whole new meaning-mainly, that of having a fling with the mysterious Claude, the first man in a long, long while to get her juices flowing.

Claude, on the other hand, isn't happy with his mother, Beatrice, who offered their home up as lodging to a virtual stranger. Sure, they're technically related, but to invite a stranger into your home and hand over family secrets seems a bit far-fetched. Until he meets the delectable Lucy, a woman full of passion, mystery, and a head for history. Suddenly, having her in his home is causing all types of complications, and mapping out the family tree is the least of his worries.

      E. C. Sheedy brings IN GOOD HANDS to the Bayou-based anthology, and what a pair of hands it is! Dane McCoy lives on Delacroix Island as a personal choice-not too far from New Orleans, but far enough-because he values his privacy and solitude. Housing his sister Marilee's (think Paris Hilton) "best friend" Esme Shane isn't his idea of a good time. A book illustrator, Esme needs one last beach to complete her portfolio for her editor, and Delacroix Island is the perfect place to do so. Dane understands all of that, but he's not happy. Especially when his sister describes Esme as a "mouse", a quiet, unassuming woman who will stay out of his way. Funny, but the Esme Shane he meets when the plane lands is a thirty-nine-year old firecracker who's unbelievably hot.

Esme realizes right away that Marilee has launched another one of her plans. Her brother Dane is not the middle-aged super-nerd hermit with no time for sex that Marilee made him out to be. Dane McCoy is all hot-blooded male, and he's nobody's fool. Neither, for that matter, is she-and as soon as she finds out Marilee's true ulterior motive, that of getting Dane to invest in her latest hair-brained business venture, she plans to hightail it out of Dodge. Unfortunately, she never counted on the near-combustible attraction that would flare up between her and the enigmatic Dane, so she might just end up staying on the Island a bit longer than she'd originally planned.

All in all, BAYOU BAD BOYS is one hot ticket to Louisiana! You don't want to miss this winning collection of Southern stories-or the hotties that grace the pages!

      2 out of 5 stars So bad..........2006-11-22

and I do mean that in a bad way. This was so boring, I could cry. I skimmed through the first story and the dialogue was so cliched and dumb, I wanted to kill whoever wrote it. And unbelievable. I mean, I know a big part of romance is supposed to be unbelievable stuff anyway...but this was just stupid. Yeah, there's like sex on every page. And it was still boring!! No plot. Characters are thinnly drawn. Not worth it. Unless what you want is a sex-fest.

      3 out of 5 stars EROTIC FLUFF!.......2006-10-07

Three very erotic and sensual stories but not much room for character or plot development.

      5 out of 5 stars A Word of Warning.......2006-06-13

I just bought this book today.I enoyed all the stories. However, the preview for the next book written by JoAnn Ross featured in the back of this book is called,IMPULSE.She wrote another book by the same name recently, that is totally different from the preview. If you want to read Nick and Cait's story, you'll have to wait for it as it is NOT the IMPULSE mentioned as Ross'next novel.

      Happy Reading Anyway!

      5 out of 5 stars Steamy!!.......2006-02-09

      CAJUN HEAT by JoAnn Ross
When Gabriel Broussard left Blue Bayou for Hollywood, he had no intention of returning. Until he needs to escape Hollywood and the gossip and lies that abound there. Emma Quinlen's heart was shattered when Gabe left town all those years ago, and the moment she sees him again, her continued attraction to him is undeniable. With Emma being insecure because of her lush curves, thinking that Gabe surely prefers the thin bodies that are typical in Hollywood, Gabe has no choice but to prove her wrong. Facing the pain and the mistakes of their past is no easy task, but every heated moment they are together makes both of them wonder if they could have something more than a brief fling. Gabe and Emma are wonderfully written characters who sizzle throughout this great story.

YOU GIVE ME FEVER by Nancy Warren
Lucy Charles goes to New Orleans to trace her roots, she has no expectations of finding love. When she first meets her distant cousin, Claude LeBlanc, she mistakes him for his mother's groundskeeper. It isn't long before she finds out who he really is and the two of them are caught up in a red-hot affair. When a series of jewelry thefts happen and Lucy suspects that Claude is involved, she's torn as to whether or not to turn him in. Claude can't believe his good fortune in meeting Lucy, but she doesn't have a clue about who he is or what he really does; he fears her reaction when she finds out. Nancy Warren heats up the pages with this tale about trust and love, and the fine line between the two.

IN GOOD HANDS by E.C. Sheedy
Dane McCoy happily lives a life of seclusion, enjoying the quiet and solitude of his island home. Imagine his disappointment when he allows his sister to talk him into allowing her friend, Esme Shane, to spend a couple of weeks in his home so she can use illustrations from his beach for her portfolio. The woman who shows up at his home is anything but mousy and shy, she is beautiful with long legs that stir his imagination. Suddenly, having a visitor is very appealing and Dane can't resist the sweet temptation of seducing Esme. When Esme is persuaded to go to Dane's beachfront to finish her portfolio, she expects to meet a middle-aged geek who stays holed-up with his computers. Realizing that she has been misled by Dane's sister, who failed to mention that Dane was gorgeous, Esme decides to give in to Dane's smooth seduction, thinking a quick affair would be harmless; or would it? Neither Dane nor Esme were what the other expected them to be, but they are perfect together and E.C. Sheedy has done a wonderful job of getting them together, in all ways.

This anthology is a fun read by three authors who are favorites in women's fiction. Each story is well-rounded and none are rushed to completion as can be the case with anthologies. I highly recommend this book to readers who love hot southern men and the women who find them irresistible!

In the tradition of DAW's Cat Fantastic series come sixteen original tales set in future realms of time and space, where man's best friend saves the day-with all the abilities that animal lovers and science fiction and fantasy readers attribute to them.

Includes stories by Tanya Huff, Julie E. Czerneda, Fiona Patton, Michelle West, and more.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Every dog has his day.......2005-07-03

As stated elsewhere, this book provides a fine counterpoint to the plethora of cat-related fantasy anthologies. Those feline-centered works have collectively generated a group of standard cliches (cat as familiar, cat as shapeshifter or transformed human, cat as otherworldly harbinger) that, to some degree, are repeated in this collection, albeit with a fresh template. The stories are a lively mix, however, and if nothing else provide a fresh perspective on their themes.

I suppose my favorite is "Final Exam" by Rosemary Edghill, which is very imaginative and whose only weakness is some very stilted and unrealistic expository dialogue. I also enjoyed "Improper Congress" by Elaine Quon, which provides a risque SF take on a well-worn fantasy theme ("animal isn't what it at first seems"). Not faring so well in my opinion was the long concluding piece by Michelle West, which I believe occurs in one of her existing worlds; it made me feel a bit excluded from things, and I had difficulty finishing it. The opening story, "Finding Marcus" by Tanya Huff, is noteworthy only for its canine perspective on events; lacking that, it wouldn't be a story at all, for very little actually happens and nothing is resolved.

"Sirius," though bracketed by weaker beginning and ending pieces, cuts some fresh tread in themes and plots that have been worn smooth over time.

4 out of 5 stars Good, fast moving anthology.......2004-07-20

          "Sirius" was a delight.

Definitely, an anthology for dog-lovers was needed; there had been five "Catfantastic" ones, after all -- so, finally, the dog has had its day and we're reaping the benefit.

The best and most memorable stories here were by India Edghill (a historical fantasy about Charles II's dog), Julie Czerneda (an alien learns to appreciate a dog), Elaine Quon (a funny story about a dog/human bodyswitch), Michelle West (good short story using the backstory from previous published novels), Doranna Durgin (fine short story using backstory from previously published novel(s)) and Rosemary Edghill (an alternate-world adventure where dogs have a far greater role in society and security; by the way, the last line here was absolutely perfect).

There was only one story I'd call marginal here, and that was the leadoff story by Tanya Huff. I'd not have expected that, as Ms. Huff is one of my favorite writers, and is an excellent short story writer. However, this story (about a dog searching for its long-lost master; the s/f spin is that the master was lost through a worldgate) felt flat, almost as if Ms. Huff had tried too hard or something, and I would have appreciated the touches of humor Ms. Huff usually brings. Instead, this story was almost too downbeat, and even the somewhat happy ending couldn't completely save it. I felt this story ("Finding Marcus") was more depressing than Jane Lindskold's, where at least I knew going in that her story would be dark fantasy.

But out of sixteen stories, to have only one I considered to be a clinker isn't bad, which is why this anthology gets four solid stars and a recommended tag.

          Barb Caffrey

P.S. I hope another anthology about dogs is planned, because as well as bringing back all the authors from this one, I'd like to see a story by Jennifer Roberson (she of the "Cheysuli" universe), as she's also one of my favorites -- and the only one I expected to see here that I didn't!

5 out of 5 stars whimsical speculative fiction.......2004-06-02

This sixteen story collection of speculative fiction runs the full gamut as some tales are pure outer space or futuristic science fiction; others are alternate history; some are fantasy with even a historical fantasy included, and finally even private sleuth Zachary Johnson earns his keep. Though the compilation includes several sub-genres, the two common threads that run through the tales are a dog is the star or a key player and that each contributor provided a five bark story. The authors are some of the top of the line and a few brought their normal brand into the anthology. All the writers provided a superb entry starring canines with fully developed personalities inside exciting plots. Paraphrasing Groucho: "Outside a dog, a book is man's best friend; inside a dog is to dark to read" for that is the whimsical approach that turns that turns SIRIUS THE DOG STAR into a treat for dog lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening book........2007-09-30

This book had a few earlier reviews that left me feeling skeptical before buying and reading it myself. Now that I have read it I feel it is a great tool for showing what very could have happened in our Earths history.
The author did a very good job of explaining the content and left me with no questions about it. I personally believe what he researched and authored is very likely the truth. It gave me the "proof" of knowing that our world was indeed created by an awesome God. The fallen angels who corrupted Gods perfect creation by breeding the half man-half angel "Nephilim" really makes it all come together.
The last part of the book emphasizes a relationship with our creator God (Yeshua) aka. Jesus. That is the best part. Only when we recognise that we ourselves are corrupt in the heart and rebel against God, do we finally understand the need for a savior (Jesus). The good part is that what he did on the cross paid for all our rebellious sin. All we have to do is accept it for ourselves freely.

          I recomend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT FOUNDATION BOOK..........2007-09-12

Dr. Patrick Heron's book is one the first book I've read that deals with the fallen ones extensively... I was really amazed how good he is at pointing the facts. Indeed it is convincing. The second part of the book tells about the Apocalypse and End Times. I particularly like this Biblical quote that Dr. Patrick emphasized...

"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE
GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS
CHRIST, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM
SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL
          LIFE......." John 3:16

Believe and you shall have Eternal
          Happiness...

          FAITH....

Two words to sum it all up: YOU'LL BELIEVE!!

4 out of 5 stars Raised More Questions.......2007-08-24

I thought the book was very good. I've been interested in the details (what details there are that are credible) pertaining to Genesis 6 for a while now and Patrick Heron has provided some. I wished that Mr. Heron would have discussed more about the possibility of the existence of the Nephilim today (i.e., in this day and age). I question if there is another program by the fallen to dilute the human race again seeing as The Anointed (the one true hero in the greek sense) has all ready arrived in the flesh. The discussion about the pyramids was interesting and Mr. Heron suggests that the Holy City described in Rev. 21 is in the shape of a pyramid. Possible, ...but I prefer the interpretation of it being cubic in shape as this would make it a six (6) sided structure rather than the five (5) sided design of a pyramid. The number five (5) of course being associated with the adversary (Satan).

I was very disappointed in the book. I bought it for information that the title promised, and then found that over half of the book is preaching. Be warned before you buy, if you want a long sermon then buy it

1 out of 5 stars what a waste of money !!!.......2007-05-09

It's a very bad book, plenty of fantasious ideas that aren't based neither historic nor scientific evidence. In addition, that ideas are mixed with the traditional concept of 'christ'. The author shows a lack of rigoruos analytic thinking in his statements.
If you want to enhance your knowldege with points of view more independents of both historic and religious traditional influences, I recommend to read "The Orion Mystery", "Fingerprints of the Gods", and books of zecharia sitchin.

          3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2007-04-03

I bought this book because I wanted to do more research on the issue of the identity of the "sons of God" and the Nephilim in Genesis 6. Among evangelical biblical scholars there is disagreement regarding who these beings were. Some scholars say that the "sons of God" were Sethites who intermarried with Cainite women; some others say that they were warriors descended from Cain; and others say that they were angelic beings who fell from their glorious state in heaven.

Patrick Heron does an excellent job demonstrating that the "sons of God" were fallen angels who took on fleshly form and mated with human females. I was never fully convinced with the Sethite and Cainite view of the sons of God because of their weak exegetical and historical foundations (the Sethite view cannot explain why the "daughters of men" must refer to Cainite women, and the Cainite view was unheard of before the 2nd century AD). Heron provides intriguing evidence to point out that the sons of God were indeed angels: the pantheon of gods in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman mythology (one can include the mythologies of other Indo-European cultures like the Norse and Indics); the practice of genetic manipulation in antiquity (demonstrated by records of hybrid beasts in stone tablets and murals); and vile religious practices of these ancient people.

Though many Christians may find the angelic theory of the sons of God/Nephilim/ancient gods far-fetched, Heron still does an excellent job showing why there is a vital connection between the fallen angels and the "heroes of old" (ancient gods/goddesses). He reveals how the ancient pyramids of Egypt, Southeast Asia, and pre-Columbian Americas are intricately tied to these sons of God and the coming apocalypse. (Heron's theory is backed up by recent findings in the last century of huge skeletal frames found in various parts of the world. Some of these skeletal frames are as tall as 20 feet. These findings show that in ancient times there existed humanoid giants that roamed the earth and caused havoc among native civilizations.)

However, despite these positive and enlightening points, Heron's book takes a downward turn in the second half. The second half of the book is basically an advocacy of the dispensational pretribulational view of the end-times. Though I am strongly premillennial and futurist in my interpretation of Revelation, I just thought that Heron made major assumptions and leaps in trying to fit his whole theory into a pretrib/premill eschatological schema. Yes, I believe that there will be bizarre events in the near future signalling the beginning of the end (and I believe that these fallen angels will play a large part in the coming catastrophe), but that can all be found in the Book of Revelation. In short, the second part of the book read like another one of Hal Lindsey's end-time books with some interesting things thrown into the mix.

Overall, I would recommend this book ONLY for the information on the sons of God and Nephilim. Many Christians will find Heron's advocacy of the pretrib/premill position problematic. One can definitely find better books elsewhere if one wants a more scholarly work on eschatology.
