Book Description
INSIDE AN AIR FORCE ACADEMY SEX SCANDAL INVESTIGATION, ANOTHER HEINOUS CRIME COMES TO LIGHT: MURDER.
Major Nathan Malone figured his DWI charge was about to get him fired from the Office of Special Investigations. Instead, he's pulled from his holding cell to take on a shocking case: during an ongoing Congressional investigation into a sex scandal at the U.S. Air Force Academy, two female cadets are found brutally murdered. Accustomed to living on the edge, and used to his chiseled looks opening doors, Malone finds his devil-may-care attitude is shaken to the core as he and his partner, the uncompromising Marva "Mother" Hubbard, track a sadistic killer intent on keeping the secrets of the past buried deep.

A Page-Turner.......2006-01-13
The seventh military thriller by Patrick A. Davis is set in the Air Force Academy. Fourteen years earlier, a young cadet named Christina Barlow is gang-raped while a student. Her attackers were never identified or charged. She killed in an automobile accident with her twin sister Kaitlin at the wheel. Kaitlin now works for a high-powered, limelight-seeking senator and wants revenge for her sister. The academy has come under attack for sex scandals concerning their female recruits. Various rape cases have come under investigation and Kaitlin has been chosen by the senator as liaison with full access to Air Force investigation.
Nathan Marlone is Commander of the Office of Special Investigations. His new assignment is to work with Kaitlin Barlow to investigate the rape charges made against the academy. Not exactly a rule follower, Nathan is always one step away form being thrown out of the Air Force. He has a link to Christina in that he lived across the hall from her while at the Academy and was romantically involved with her.
This plot was very fast-paced with many intricate twists and turns. It was extremely engaging and found I barely could put it down. The book was not without a few problems. The reader does have to make some leaps of faith because the story is not really plausible. There were conflicts of interest galore, but the story was so good it did not really matter. The chemistry between the main characters was lacking and the female lead was unlikable which was a bit of a drawback. The strength was the plot and twist at the end
Top Notch.......2006-01-12
This was a truly exciting page turner. Almost impossible to put down. Endless twists and turns. A beautiful female cadet was raped at the Air Force Academy. She was later killed in an automobile accident. Her identical twin sister suffers a nervous breakdown and assumes her identity. She turns into a mass murderer at the Academy--trying to avenge her sister. The chief investigator has dark secrets of his own. Suspects in both the original rape and subsequent murders fly by. An ambitious senator attempts to make political hay out of the situation. This book was really superb.
Kept me up all night!.......2005-10-24
I'm not kidding, I couldn't put this one down until I finished it at 3:00 am. Patrick Davis has written a series of mysteries with an Air Force background. This is his best. The best mystery I have read this year! An unsolved rape of a female cadet at the AF academy, an AF investigator with a checkered past, an unpopular senator seeking reelection based on his crusade against "coverups" by the Academy administration, the Senator's insertion of a member of his own staff into the investigation, and finally a series of murders; stir gently and you have a really explosive mystery. The end will blow you away--don't peek.
Wow, This is Great!.......2005-10-16
Patrick A. Davis has written a number of thrillers about murders taking place in military settings and "The Shattered Blue Line" is the newest addition to the set. This is definitely one of Davis's best-yet --- very fast-paced, well-crafted, twisting, dare-you-to-put-it-down-for-long sort of stuff.
"The Shattered Blue Line" first takes the reader back many years, to the brutal rape of an Air Force Academy cadet. After this, the readers are introduced to Nathan Malone, who seems to have hit bottom, but will soon find out that the bottom isn't quite what he thought it was.
After the murder of an Air Force Cadet, Malone is put in charge of the investigation. It turns out he'll be partnering with Kaitlin Barlow, the sister of the woman who was raped so many years ago. As the two race to solve the murders, they clash heads and face pressure from the big brass, some of which definitely don't want Malone (and some, Barlow) on the job. On top of that, they have to face sexual tension between each other, as Malone had, well, a past with Kaitlin's sister, Christina.
Some of the events in this novel are very shocking and you'll be hard-pressed to figure out who the killer is. Even once you think you know, there's another twist yet to come. And once it's all over and seemingly wrapped up --- Patrick A. Davis then hits you with the big surprise, so watch out.
If you've enjoyed any of Patrick A. Davis's past novels, or enjoy any sort of suspense book or thriller, you'll definitely want to read "The Shattered Blue Line."
A good suspense with lots of twists.......2005-10-11
I was really impressed with this author. This book really drew me in and I couldn't put it down. Davis really keeps you guessing and there are full of surprises. Anyone who enjoys a good suspense should pick this book up because you will not be disappointed.

Rough trade meets refined........2007-09-30
Name one real life inspirational cop. I certainly can't do it. So why is this profession so popular with writers? What's more, cops don't actually solve that many crimes. 20% tops. If I only did 20% of my work I'd be given my pink slip. I've seen some really fat slobs in cop uniform lacking even the most basic people skills. I do admit they are needed to keep the traffic running smoothly but that's hardly glamorous work.
Anyway the hero of this novel is a police lieutenant. With a habit of getting himself shot up. The hero's name is Bud. Personally. I think that's a terrible name for a hero. I suppose it's meant to signify honest-to-goodness blue collar values like hard work, integrity, loyalty. To me it signifies an overly large beer intake, rolls of fat and not being too bright. To the author I think it signifies the ability to do it energetically for hours on end and to put up shelves. Not that we get much of the former in this novel. What we do get a lot of is the c-word. I don't have anything against the c-word per se. However when it's used to describe the whole woman as opposed to just a part of her anatomy I do wonder about the person using it in this manner.
The heroine has never done it before. (In an Elora's Cave novel!) And her gentle initiation takes about a third of the story. A tiresome business. I was more interested in Bud's descriptions of his down and dirty times with the waitress. I also didn't see where the romance was. Bud literally steamrollers Claire into an engagement because he's intimidated by her father's wealth and social status. Presumably Claire accepted because he gave her a good time in bed. People have got married for worse reasons than that but it's hardly the stuff of a good romance.
What I enjoyed in the novel were Claire's descriptions of the personalities of the doctors and nurses who treated her in hospital while she was ill. These form only a small part of the story.
And. It needs to be said. Claire and her friends must be the most crime prone trio in the whole of Oregon. Which considering their income bracket is truly amazing.
Finally. Another poor minor character dies horribly in this novel. Todd Armstrong. The token gay friend.
I'm going to read another in the series. Midnight Angel. I just like the fact that the stories are contemporary and feature minor and major issues in current affairs. (In Oregon that is).
Bud-alicious hero.......2007-01-26
This was a book I stumbled upon while looking around the reviews on Amazon. What a great discovery!
I've already ordered Lisa Marie Rice's "Midnight Man," which was the first in this trilogy; and "Midnight Angel," the third.
Midnight Run is a well-developed story with a macho cop and a woman who's battled life-threatening illness and is just now in her mid-20s healthy enough to spread her wings and live a little. They fall for each other immediately, but it's believable and the love scenes (okay SEX scenes :) are well done.
At first, Bud doesn't realize Claire's so fragile so he treats her as a normal grown-up woman. And she loves that, having been coddled and smothered by the well-meaning attentions of her loved ones.
When things change and her beloved cop becomes a control freak, she has to take a stand. Won't ruin the story by letting any cats out of the bag.
Totally agree with the reviewer who compared this to Linda Howard. In fact, although I love Linda Howard's work I wondered if it would be mean to send her this book as a kind of hint that she needs to GET BACK to this kind of plotting and characterization.
And I wonder about the allegation that Lisa Marie Rice and Shannon McKenna are one and the same. That's probably not true, at least we better hope it's not as one author--unless she's Nora Roberts--is not as prolific as two.
But if this rumor grows in strength to the "Paul McCartney is dead" level, garnered from the Abbey Road album cover, then that reviewer's work is done :)
A romantic well written book . .......2006-11-10
Lisa Marie Rice is a very talented underappreciated author who once you read her books will have you hooked. She is mega talented and capable of writing extremely sizzling sex at the same time she is writing a well thought out story that brings each of her characters wonderfully alive.
In this story Claire Parks a very rich but sheltered young woman meets a very hardened police officer and they fall head over heals in love with one another. There are many twists that I do not want to ruin for you, but trust me that you will not be bored. I strongly recommend this book and also the other two "Midnight" books. Her earlier books are also worth your time.
Truly good story.......2006-09-21
I don't usually write reviews, unless the story is simply horrible. This story, however, prompted me to write a positive review. The characters are very likable and the sex is hot! Check it out!!!
Dumbfounded and Amazed - An Absolute Treasure of a Book.......2006-03-07
Where has this author been all my adult reading life? Better yet, where have I been that I'm just recently discovering her? Well, it's all good now, because there's no stopping me from reading everything this author will ever produce. Sure, I've got a keeper shelf, but I've never vowed to buy a book just because a particular author's name graced the cover. I'm breaking that particular dry spell and claiming here and now that Lisa Marie Rice's books will always be a must buy for me. Here's why:
Claire Parks is a woman on a mission. Having been terminally ill most of her young life, she's more than ready to experience all the things she never had the opportunity to. Wild parties, the rougher side of life, you name it, she wants to experience it. Sex? Well, absolutely! She's on the prowl for a good time and when she meets undercover Lieutenant Bud Morrison at a club, she just knows she's safe and secure with him. When the good cop gives her a ride home, thinking a white trash guy like him could never get close to a princess like her, he's in for the surprise of his life when he gets an invite into her home. What proceeds is the best, no holds barred sex of his entire life. It was dirty, it was rough and it was a turning point for him and Claire both. He know's he's found something special and he's not about to let Claire slip through his fingers. When they each find out who the other really is though, will their new found love be enough to hold them together? Or will Claire's tragic past drive them apart?
This is not erotica as I have read it before by other authors. Rice consistently produces heartfelt and heart wrenching stories, with the perfect mix of naughty and nice, that just make me want to read them over and over. There's a depth to her writing, her characters, that readers seldom see in other books. There's a good solid plot line that, so far, interweaves nicely with the other two books in this series (first "Midnight Man", "Midnight Run" then "Midnight Angel"). Bud Morrison has a very strong presence in the book, very much a rugged alpha male meets Pierce Brosnan-like persona. Strong and formidable, yet dashing, kind and extremely caring all in one. He's outraged at any foul treatment of women and children and he takes his job as a cop, protector if innocents, seriously. Claire is the type of heroine you just want to weep for, because of her tragic past and her determination to actually LIVE, then stand up and cheer for her (kind of a "You go, girl"!) when she gets a man like Bud. Actually, you could almost feel jealous of her, but hey, it's fiction ladies. Alas, siiighhh, these men are not real. So, if you haven't read Lisa Marie rice's books yet, don't just pick up this one - get them all! Prepare to absolutely live in her books. The stories are so compelling, the men so HOT, you'll wish you were one of the heroines of her books.
Book Description
Lean, edgy former police detective Jack LaCroix had forty-eight hours to clear his name and keep his freedom. To do it, the escaped prisoner needed attorney Landis McAllister--the woman he'd once thought would share his life. The woman who thought he'd betrayed her.
Landis had just pulled her life together. Now Jack was back, compelling her to believe in him despite the damning evidence, proving with a touch that the ashes of their fiery past still smoldered. With the law on their heels and bullets flying at their backs, could they rekindle their trust in each other and find the proof Jack needed before time ran out?

Disappointed.......2005-05-01
I love Linda Castillo and have read all of her books - this one was predictable and disappointing. While she does a great job, as usual, with tension, the relationship between the H/H seemed contrived and artificial - as though she rushed through the book. I enjoyed her other books and look forward to more depth to the characters - otherwise, good book and a 3 star only in comparison to other other books.
Gripping! Very highly recommended.......2003-11-27
A desperate escape sends convicted killer Jack LaCroix to the doorstep of the woman who once loved him. Attorney Landis McAllister wants nothing to do with the man convicted of her brother's murder. Now he needs her help if he is to prove that he did not kill his partner. The money, the guns, the witnesses were all provided by Salt Lake City's most infamous drug lord.
Jack's lawyer holds the information pivotal in exonerating him. Unfortunately, the lawyer is found murdered before he can turn the information over to Jack, or obtain verification through means the court will accept. Now Jack needs Landis to help him prove his innocence. But their contact puts both their lives in danger, and soon they find themselves on a heedless midnight run for justice.
Author Linda Castillo's skill for creating gripping intensity sparkles in MIDNIGHT RUN. Landis faces profound ethical and moral dilemmas as the very foundation of her loyalty is questioned. Jack's determination and fierce passion lend the novel a tight edginess that keeps the drama unfolding quickly. With an intense pace, taut plotting and fantastic characterization, MIDNIGHT RUN comes very highly recommended.
Strong powerful writing.......2003-11-09
When he breaks out of prison, convicted killer Jack LaCroix has only one goal in mind--clearing his name and taking down the man who framed him for murdering his friend and partner. Unfortunately, the only person who can help him is Landis McAllister. And prosecuting attorney Landis doesn't want to have anything to do with the man who killed her brother. Landis knows that even the best of men can go dirty, and Jack was always willing to walk close to the line. Landis sees things in black and white while Jack is all gray. But how can even Jack think that Landis will help him with his crazy plan?
When Jack's lawyer is killed, Jack is the obvious suspect, but Landis knows that Jack was elsewhere. If he's innocent of the lawyer's death, might he also be innocent of the other crimes he's been convicted of? Landis decides to find out the truth--and explore her own dangerous feelings. But Jack knows that the stakes have been escalated. Before, only his own life was at stake. He doesn't mind gambling with his life, but he resists taking a chance with Landis's. Except it is already too late for both of them.
Author Linda Castillo writes an action-packed and emotionally complex story as Jack and Landis battle with one another and with mob-leader Cyrus Duke and his minions. A nice twist at the end adds to both the sense of danger and the emotional intensity of the novel. I especially liked the way Castillo integrated her characters' back stories into the plot. Both are damaged, both find the dangers that they face set off all of the emotional defenses that they have built to protect themselves, and both of them must find a way to surmount their pasts if they are to survive the present.
MIDNIGHT RUN is a strong effort by a mature and powerful writer.

Book Description
Dingus Dreaming is a seminal work on canine literacy. During the formative, house-training phase of his life, Dingus suffers a blow to the head from the New York Times. Suddenly transformed from lowly mongrel to literate canine, Dingus struggles Candide-like to understand the nature of good and evil and learns what it means to be a dog - with a weak spot for Steinbeck.
Written with an inspired ear for the satiric, Dingus Dreaming marries literature with farce. Pleasing, though never facile, this book asks the reader what it means to be a reader and what it is to participate in literature. There is simply no way to appreciate the buoyant and charming Dingus than to do as he does: chew through the book.
Customer Reviews:
Alex, You Have No Mercy!!.......2004-06-02
What a great book. It is masterfully done and the author not only shows an understanding of the best writers or our time, but also relates it all in the world of "Dingus the Dreamer". I was captivated by the story and the way Al was able to relate each of the works of the authors represented by members of the canine world. Breeds even match. Al, you drove me to the dictionary constantly. My recommendation is "READ THIS BOOK" as Alex Vardamis has no mercy. Al, if my English is poor, consider the background!!
Dingus Delights.......2004-05-01
If you live with dogs, you know how hard it is to keep from imagining them experiencing thoughts and emotions exactly as we do. But dogs are not human beings and we do them no favor by ascribing to them too-human characteristics, thereby rendering them charming but inauthentic. Alex Vardamis knows this, but does it anyway in his thoroughly delightful fable, Dingus Dreaming, the story of a dog who awakens to literacy thanks to a clout on the head from the New York Times.
Dingus dreams of becoming an influential writer of "hell raising op-eds," flirts with the idea of becoming a novelist, but-thanks to the intellectual stimulus of other literary dogs of high Modernism, Haig Jeffers, Charley Steinbeck, and Yukon Buck London among them-he ultimately revels in the quotidian joys of being a dog in canine-crazy Carmel-by-the-Sea. One wonders if Emerson had a dog, because Dingus' begins to sound a good deal like the Sage of Concord. "Too much thought dulls intuition. Book learning," Dingus discovers, "is no substitute for personal experience." Alas for Dingus that personal experience reveals to him the casual brutality of all too many human beings: compassionless neuterers, loutish Saluki beaters, and snobbish devotees of the doggy genome project known as the AKC.
Throughout his awakening, though, Dingus learns that some human beings are almost as pure of heart as the unforgettable Newfoundland Seaman, who led Lewis and Clark across a continent. The steadfast loyalty and unquestioning love of mistress Audrey, show Dingus that not all human beings teach us, in the words of Haig Jeffers, "to be in nothing so moderate as in love of man, a clever servant, an insufferable master."

Good Resource.......2007-09-09
I think that the UCC Hymnal is a very good resource. I love that it uses old tunes and new ones that are accessible to the congregation. The modern language is great for those of us who can't remember what some of the archaic words mean. There is also the inclusive language for people that I also like, which I think is extremely important to have in hymnals as much as possible. However, I do not like the ultra inclusive language that it has when it comes to describing God. It sounds so awkward.
New Century Hymnal.......2007-08-08
Deserving of high praise as a collection of hymns of the United Church of Christ. Gender-sensitive and ethnic-sensitive throughout. Contains valuable ORDERS OF WORSHIP, HYMNS of Praise, for the Christian Year, for the Faith and Order of the Church, for the Life and Order of the Church, PSALMS and CANTICLES, SERVICE MUSIC, WORSHIP RESOURCES, and valuable index helps of Author, Composer, and Source, Metrical Index, Tune Index, Scriptural Index, Lectionary Index, Topical Index, First Line Index, Descant Index. As a member of the UCC, I am grateful to have my own copy of this excellent hymnal available as a valuable resource at any time during the week.
This Pew Edition Should be in Every UCC Church.......2007-04-28
A long time in coming, this UCC hymnal is what the title says, a hymnal for the new, that is 21st, century. The book presents all of the best loved hymns of the past, a fine collection of them. It also provides a remarkable sampling of the best of the hymn explosion of the second half of the 20th century. What a great way to live into God's future, by singing the songs of the faithful past and by sharing the ongoing growth of the Gospel in song!
Some highlights herein that congregations will not want to miss include one of the best songs anywhere about the Day of Pentecost: #265 "Come, O Spirit, With Your Sound!" Sung to the Early American hymn tune BOUNDLESS MERCY, it captures all the wonder and awe of the event of Acts Chapter Two and is scrupulously faithful to scripture.
Also in this hymnal is a great hymn relating to ecology and care for the world around us, #586 "Come to Tend God's Garden!" sung to that majestic tune, KINGS WESTON.
There is so much more to enjoy in this hymnal. For every committee in every UCC congregation who is contemplating a new hymnal, my recommendation would be this hymnal. No doubt some will be pushing that you pick a hymnal by some unaffiliated publishing house, but be careful. If you want your potential members from other places to feel at home, then this is one way to do it, have in your pew racks the hymnal that says "We are UCC".
If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.
No music inside!.......2007-01-26
It is important for customers to know that this large print edition contains WORDS ONLY of the hymns. There is not one musical note! I am in the process of returning this item to Amazon. My intention had been to give this to a family member who likes to play hymns on the piano but is getting up in years and can no longer see the music very well, even with glasses. I was surprised to find that this item consists of a large box of sheets of everything in the pew version of the hymnal (excluding the music) and a notebook. Before a church service, a person with good eye-sight could remove the appropriate sheets from the box and put them into the notebook in the correct order for the sight-challenged person to use during the church service, so this might work okay for somebody who doesn't read music and therefore wouldn't miss it. I think it would be better to use a photocopy machine or scanner and blow up each musical page in the real hymnal to 9 by 11 inches. I hope the publisher of this so-called hymnal will do that in the future.
WHEN DOES IT STOP?.......2005-09-21
If Jesus is without sin and He referred to His Father, who are you to think it more sensitive to bow to the silliness of the age and censor Him?
If the terminology of the past concerning gender offends the modern era, and the modern era has better ideas about these relationships, why
is divorce now so prevalent?
