Book Description
Culture maverick Jim Goad presents a thoroughly reasoned, darkly funny, and rampagingly angry defense of America's most maligned social group -- the cultural clan variously referred to as rednecks, hillbillies, white trash, crackers, and trailer trash. As The Redneck Manifesto boldly points out and brilliantly demonstrates, America's dirty little secret isn't racism but classism. While pouncing incessantly on racial themes, most major media are silent about America's widening class rifts, a problem that negatively affects more people of all colors than does racism. With an unmatched ability for rubbing salt in cultural wounds, Jim Goad deftly dismantles most popular American notions about race and culture and takes a sledgehammer to our delicate glass-blown popular conceptions of government, religion, media, and history.

nice piece of middle-brow philosophy.......2007-03-30
If you've never sat through a college Sociology course or aren't a political junkie, The Redneck Manifesto will be a true revelation. Although I lean a little to the right and shy away from propaganda, Jim Goad had me wanting to grap a pitchfork and run down to City Hall to settle the score.
On the negative side, Goad over-sells every theory with example after example supporting his point of view. In many chapters I read the first 3 pages and skipped the next 20 because I'd already bought what he was selling.
Not really a manifesto, but still excellent!.......2007-02-22
While the title would seem to imply that this book is some kind of call to arms for poor white people, it is actually less a manifesto than a history lesson combined with Goad's own unique take on life in America. It lays out a version of American history that does not deny the validity of statements about our "racist past" but certainly makes the case that most whites who ended up in the New World had it pretty rough. He explains the virtually ignored topic of white slavery, the development of the word "redneck", and the utter contempt and bias the modern mainstream media has towards those unfortunate enough to be labeled as such. Alongside the history lesson Goad provides some insight into his views on religion, politics, and war, which are then usually tied into the book's redneck theme.
I found this book to be facinating and despite what some reviewers may think, largely correct in the conclusions it draws about the forbidden topic of anti-white racism in America. Goad even lists his sources so those who doubt the veracity of his claims can do their own research. I do agree somewhat with the reviewer who said that Goad's jokes grew tiring, but I think so mostly because the other material in this book is so important and interesting, not because I think Goad is a "pseudo-reformed urban liberal". Even if this were published as a pamphlet it would stil be worth purchasing. Goad's style may not be for everyone but on the whole this book deals with the topic in a serious though not pedantic manner. It is not intended for self-hating suburban whites, which is unfortunate since they are the people who need to read it the most!
If you can't laugh at this you might as well be dead or French, .......2007-01-26
Most reviewers have missed the most important dimension of this book: Jim Goad is an American prose stylist on parallel with H.L. Mencken, Florence King, and Mark Twain. What most have taken as a war cry is more properly viewed as wit.
This book is filled with hilarious metaphors, transitions, over-the-top prose and verbal darts. Those who have an ideological bone to pick with Goad, or wish to engage in rebuttal had first better check the mirror for where their self-importance and moral superiority meters are set. For Goad, arguing from below with the tools of pugnacious roustabout and the rhetorical and argumentative skills of a St. Aquinas will deploy his first haymaker quite easily: he's going to make you laugh very hard.
An uproarious Rabelaisian wonder of a book. A joy, a pleasure, a belly laugh, a bacchanal, a celebration, a hootenanny, a liberation, a nouvelle monde, a birth, a breakthrough, a backslap, a war whoop, a whimsy, a watershed, a wonder, a discovery, a delight, a treasure, a classic. Jim Goad's The REDNECK MANIFESTO: HOW HILLBILLIES HICKS AND WHITE TRASH BECAME AMERICAS SCAPEGOATS is as American as white lightening and as welcome as liberty and as classic as Menken's "The American Language." A significant and delightful contribution to American prose.
Get it today.
Read at your own Risk... .......2006-08-31
Finally a book on American history and sociology for which you don't need a box of NoDoz! Goad's writing, ranging from colorful to flat out vulgar, is nonetheless very insightful and informative. I would NOT recommend this book to the closed-minded, politially correct, or easily offended. For the rest of us, however, Goad will surely give you a reason to laugh out loud! Goad's rant on racism and the history of social order is hightly descriptive as he depicts a nation of "white trash" whose leisurely activity "manifests a need to FEEL something apart from a working life in which you're treated with all the warmth of a Plasticine toy robot." I was blown away by the historical stories and statistics of white slavery, submission, and opression. Goad reminds us that "White niggers have feelings too!" Ultimately, this book will truly prompt you to rethink your roots, whether they are white, black, hispanic, green, or purlple!
the pointless rant of a phony redneck.......2006-07-08
Jim Goad is a phony.
He isn't a southerner, and he is obviously clueless as to what a "redneck" is. That term comes from the Ulster Scots, the single largest ethnic group in America. Finding out about the Scots-Irish would have been the first thing this poser would have done, if he actually cared about the things he is writing about in this book. But defending rednecks and white trash from "scapegoating" isn't his real agenda.
No, Goad is nothing but a typical pseudo-reformed urban liberal. This book is just a pointless rant from a guy who doesn't really believe in anything. He's trying to be shocking and ironic by stating (some of) the obvious while showing off his ability to make juvenile and scatalogical jokes every other line (the book would be a third the length without all the overworked humor it contains, but then it would just be a pamphlet and would have never been published).
His kind is a dime a dozen these days. I wouldn't call Goad an Ann Coulter wannabe, but that's the general neighborhood he inhabits. Show this guy and his ilk some REAL political incorrectness, and they will whimper, put their tails between their legs and hide behind the couch. They're simply not serious people. They're just playing at being writers and thinkers and curmudgeons and misanthropes because they think it's cool.
Goad's true nature was made quite evident by the book that followed this one, a truly rancid piece of self-justification that has even less of a point than this book.
Don't waste your time with Goad. Read James Webb's great book "Born Fighting" instead; it's a real history of real rednecks, by a serious author.

Book Description
Jack Lester has to find a bride . . .
But where can he find the perfect woman? She has to be attractive, kind, a good conversationalist . . . and more important, she has to accept him as he is: devilishly handsome, charming and, as far as anyone knows, poor as a church mouse! If London society discovers his hidden wealth, he'll never find the right wife.
Jack's heart races when he first lays eyes on Sophie Winterton. She is everything he desires -- and more -- but he is caught in his own trap. Believing that Jack needs to marry into wealth, Sophie rejects all his advances, certain he would never marry a poor girl like her. As they play out a game of cat and mouse, can Jack convince her that she is the woman he wants -- and that he is the husband she deserves?

cute and sweet, but perhaps not very memorable.......2007-09-05
A Regency romance, set in England. Jack Lester (newly and secretly financially enriched) is looking for a wife. She has to be beautiful, kind, and be a good conversationalist. She also has to overlook Jack's supposed poverty, and want him for himself. When Jack meets Sophie Winterton, he knows that she is exactly the perfect mate for him. But there is one catch - Sophie believes that Jack is poor, and refuses to marry him so that he can go out and catch an heiress. Sweet and cute story about a man who loves a woman who perhaps loves him a little too much.
Sweet and cute, but perhaps not very memorable...
Not one of her best.......2007-04-02
I found this book kind of boring compared to her later works. The way Jack kept referring to Sophie as "his golden head" was just wierd. The next book in the series, An Unwilling Conquest, was much better.
1995 Re-Release.......2006-11-27
A Lady Of Expectations by Stephanie Laurens was very basic love story - Boy meets girl , girl trys to protect boy and refuses boy and boy get girl. I wouldn't spend your money on this book - pick it up at he library.
Cute & Sweet.......2006-09-30
It was a relief to read a Stephanie Laurens book that wasn't one-third sex scenes. The female character was not as abrasive as her usual heroines. Worth reading.
Tepid as weak tea.......2006-07-08
Jack Lester has found his "golden head" bride in beautiful blonde Sophie Winterton, but keeps his repaired fortune secret so that he'll be loved for himself. She's attracted to him, too, but alas! she believes It Can Never Be based on a rival's gossip that Jack must marry for money. Meanwhile, she lets an overbearing suitor, Marston, lecture her at every turn on his perceived impropriatories instead of telling him to get lost. Jack always shows up at the right moment to save Sophie from Marston's lectures. She never bothers to ask Jack about his intentions. And so it goes, endlessly.

DON'T BUY the Same Book Twice!.......2002-04-23
If you have lately come to be a reader of Stephanie Laurens, DON'T make the mistake of going back to buy this. It contains two of the three stories republished in 2000, in "Rogues' Reform". They were so forgettable the first time I read them, that I got twenty pages into this book before I sensed some awful deja vu....
No idea why this was published when.......2001-12-24
ROGUE'S REFORM (ASIN: 0373834586) was published containing the stories of all three Lester siblings. Ah well, if you have this and love Laurens, you might want to read it just to complete your reading of all the Laurens books and short stories around.
Just don't expect the early Laurens and the Laurens of the Bar Cynster series to be the same, in terms of sensuality, alpha-heroes, tortured heroes, whatever.
A Convenient Marriage.......2000-04-16
Loved it. It was two stories in one. Sister in the first, reluctant bride courted by a notorious rake. Brother in second, recently acquired fortune: does woman of his dreams love him for himself. Highly recommended!

Expectations Not Fulfilled .......2005-03-22
I read about 5 pages of this book and started to wonder if the author was talking down to me or if I was just going through a highly emotional period in my life. I pressed on until about page 20 when I stopped and looked the book up on Amazon. I then realized the issue, this book is written for young adults. This book came into my house as a bargain table purchase of my wife's that sat around on the shelf for a couple of years. I finally took it down to see what it contained. Once I found out the book was geared to a young adults the rather basic and bland writing style made sense. At the end of the day it made for a book that I got through so fast I could almost delude myself in thinking I had picked up speed reading skills.
I tend to like my non fiction books to follow chronological order and find that if they do not I get disappointed. This book, one that you would think almost demands a historical order, was chopped up into subject specific chapters. One chapter on ball gowns, one on parties etc. I felt that I could not get a good feel for how the position of first lady changed over the years because of the snippets in each chapter made it difficult to see the progressions. I also felt that the author was able to hide content holes by structuring the book in this fashion. She tended to fill the chapters up with a predominate amount of recent or more popular first ladies. It was probably easier to find the material that way.
Overall I was disappointed by the book. This being said I am probably not the right reviewer for the book. I have never read, at least not for 20 some odd years, a book focused on a teenager market thus I was disappointed in its depth. I also have no idea what a teenager would be looking for in a book of this nature so I can only judge the book by my own viewpoint.

Book Description
Throughout the galaxy, it was believed that Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker–the Chosen One–had died on Coruscant during the siege of the Jedi Temple. And, to some extent, that was true. Anakin was dead.
From the site of Anakin Skywalker’s last stand–on the molten surface of the planet Mustafar, where he sought to destroy his friend and former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi–a fearsome specter in black has risen. Once the most powerful Knight ever known to the Jedi Order, he is now a disciple of the dark side, a lord of the dreaded Sith, and the avenging right hand of the galaxy’s ruthless new Emperor. Seduced, deranged, and destroyed by the machinations of the Dark Lord Sidious, Anakin Skywalker is dead . . . and Darth Vader lives.
Word of the events that created him–the Jedi Council’s failed mutiny against Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the self-crowned Emperor’s retaliatory command to exterminate the Jedi Order, and Anakin’s massacre of his comrades and Masters in the Jedi Temple–has yet to reach all quarters. On the Outer Rim world of Murkhana, Jedi Masters Roan Shryne and Bol Chatak and Padawan Olee Starstone are leading a charge on a Separatist stronghold, unaware that the tide, red with Jedi blood, has turned suddenly against them.
When the three narrowly elude execution–and become the desperate prey in a hunt across space–it’s neither clone soldiers, nor the newly deployed stormtroopers, nor even the wrath of the power-hungry Emperor himself they must fear most. The deadliest threat rests in the hideously swift and lethal crimson lightsaber of Darth Vader–behind whose brooding mask lies a shattered heart, a poisoned soul, and a cunning, twisted mind hell-bent on vengeance.
For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padmé Amidala. Separated after Padmé’s death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime–and the unspeakable power of the dark side.

Great for action and fillers.......2007-10-04
While this doesn't nearly stack up to other books in the EU, it kept my attention and left me wanting more Darth Vader stories. The action was good, but the plot was weak at times.
There need to be more stories about the Sith. This, Darth Bane, and Darth Maul are the only ones that have novels out (as of this writing).
Come on people! Let's hear more sith...
...It had SO much promise...but ultimately left me disappointed.......2007-09-27
Man I WANTED to like this book...and I guess it really was fairly well written, but as others have noted, where was the focus? Where does the story take us? Does the overall storyline ending with Revenge of the Sith and picking up years later in A New Hope move us forward--at ALL? The answer is simple: yes--but not by much.
One MAJOR complaint I have (as do others) is that even though the novel is titled, "Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader" he doesn't even make an appearance until around 50 pages in. What the...?? I am no editor, but shouldn't a novels MAIN character be present from almost page ONE? Okay, so it bugged me...let's move on.
While certain parts of the book VERY much reminded me of why Darth Vader really IS one of the greatest icon's of Evil fictional characters ever created, others were written almost like filler for other threads to follow or explore in more detail. I especially loved the inner struggle between Anakin and Darth (yes, strangely enough they really ARE like two different people) and thankfully Emperor Palpatine gives us plenty to chew on as he unlocks plenty of Sith training for Vader, and these sections are the entire reason why I gave this story more than the two stars it otherwise would have received. The scenes depicting the Emperor and Vader are SO well done that they seemed to be crafted by a team of great writers who all fully UNDERSTOOD the Dark Side of the Force. It seemed that virtually everything said by Palpatine was done EXACTLY the way I imagine they would and should have happened. These scenes alone are the single reason for buying this book (in MY opinion anyway).
So what was my overall impression? One of genuine disappointment. The idea of defining the details of the life of Vader from almost the moment he takes that first mechanically assisted breath within his new armored suit just seemed like a PERFECT story to tackle...and I imagine had it been written by someone who actually has serious talent for story plotting it would have and could have been one of the greatest stories in this long running franchise (think Timothy Zahn). But other than a few (and far between) sections that detailed the training between the Emperor and Vader (which seriously are awesome), I was just not all that impressed...and once again, I really wanted to be.
For the serious Star Wars fan, you simply cannot allow this one to go by. It really does help iron out a few isolated dangling threads left over from the 3 prequel films -- some of which you may not even realize are un-answered until you read the book. But overall, just being able to get inside that black helmet of Vaders is one real treat for the SW fans who can appreciate what a tortured individual Anakin has become. Hopefully this review helps.
Can't go wrong with Star Wars.......2007-09-17
I have yet to find a star wars book that I absolutely hated, and this book is not an exception to the rule. Whether I (or anyone else) tell you I hated or loved the book, it's not gonna change what you're gonna do. If you're a star wars fan that loves to see the movies continued through books, then you are going to read it (and you should!). If not, why are you reading reviews on these books anyway? Get a life :)
A classic case of false advertising..........2007-08-10
The publishers of this book obviously know what Star Wars fans like -- Vader. He has become a symbol of awesome evil for our fandom. His armor, his mask, even his ominous breathing have become synonymous with our favorite space saga. So when a book appears with Vader's face on the cover (twice!) and his name in the title, we immediately bite. After all, this book claims to fill in that crucial time between "Revenge of the Sith" and "A New Hope," and also claims to show his final development from Anakin to Vader.
Sadly, this book is a classic case of false advertising. For this book is not about Darth Vader, despite the lofty claims of the cover and dust jacket. Rather, it's about a weakened, whining Jedi Knight and the collection of ragtag fugitives and criminals he gathers, a group so flatly characterized that I couldn't even find the energy to care about a single one of them despite their hardships and losses.
One of the flaws of many Star Wars novels is that the authors focus more on their original characters than on the established characters -- as was the case of Shadow Hunter (Star Wars: Darth Maul) (though I forgive that book because the original characters actually had some depth and dynamics). In this case, the main original character stole so much of Vader's thunder that I didn't care when Vader finally killed him.
If you want a good piece of writing about Darth Vader, I would recommend seeking out a good piece of fanfiction rather than reading this book, which comes across as a mediocre piece of fanfic itself. I would also recommend instead Star Wars® Darth Bane Path of Destruction: A Novel of the Old Republic (Star Wars), which isn't about Vader but is still a much better read.
A psychological and emotional journey towards the Dark Side.......2007-08-07
With the blessing of George Lucas, author James Luceno takes his readers through Vaders psychological and emotional journey towards the acceptance of his new persona as well as his place within the Dark Side of the Force. Luceno focuses on details such as the limitations of Vaders body suit, a necessity brought forth by his defeat at the hands of his brother and old Master Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar.
Other topics, such as the adjustment to his light saber technique to his very manner of walking are also discussed. Star Wars: Dark Lord - The Rise of Darth Vader is a tale of ascension wherein Darth Vader, consumed by anger and hate, regains his lost confidence as well as his resolve in the Dark Side.
Star Wars: Dark Lord - The Rise of Darth Vader answers a lot of questions left behind by Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. So what are you waiting for? Grab your copy today!
