It was ok.......2007-03-24
This was my first time reading from this author. It was ok. I was a little disappointed. I don't think I will go to the next book. Maybe I will try another series from this author. The writing was good; I just don't think I liked the story line.
Decent book, but again, nothing all-fired special.......2007-02-22
I'm one of those er modern types who generally hate the "damsel in distress" stories unless you got a distressing damsel. Anyways, Serafina's a decent character, but goodness gracious does she need to be slapped with a sense stick! As for Falconer, he's all right too...he's more developed as a character in the next book, but so far, we're told how strong he is and not shown all that much strength.
The plot was blah, but it didn't bore me to tears so take that which ever way you'd like.
Historical fiction done right.......2006-03-03
The third book in the Bunns' Heirs of Acadia series is destined to become just as popular as its predecessors, and with good reason. This is historical fiction done right --- rich in detail, abounding in authenticity, and lacking in mush. THE NOBLE FUGITIVE shows once again why T. Davis Bunn has become a household name among readers of Christian fiction and provides plenty of evidence that Isabella Bunn is likely to become the same.
Serafina is a young Venetian woman who has given her heart to her art tutor, a dashing young man named Luca. ("ER" fans may have a hard time not thinking of Dr. Luka Kovac, which is just fine. The image fits.) Her mother discovers the two together in a questionable but innocent situation, and Serafina is punished with the nineteenth-century equivalent of a grounding, locked doors and all. With the help of a conspirator, she escapes in search of her beloved. But she is found and forced to set sail for America with her parents.
This simply will not do. She has not seen Luca since the day their relationship was discovered, and Serafina is determined to find him so they can begin a life together. The ship her family boarded in Italy makes a stop in England, and with the help of another conspirator, Serafina makes her escape. After finding her way to an aunt's house outside of London, the girl who was born to privilege ends up working long and hard hours as a chambermaid.
Meanwhile, John Falconer, a slave-trader-turned-Christian, is on a quest to make right all that he has done wrong in his former life. He leaves the Caribbean, where he is wanted on a murder charge, and seeks refuge with an anti-slavery family in the United States before finding safe passage to England. There, he intends to provide evidence that the slave trade is continuing to flourish in those Caribbean islands that are part of the British Empire, despite British laws against slavery. He ends up at the very mansion where Serafina is employed. If you sense a romance in the making, well, you won't be disappointed. But in the skillful hands of two seasoned writers, the course the romance takes isn't all that predictable.
One historical figure who looms large in the background of Falconer's story line is one of my personal heroes, William Wilberforce --- the man whose relentless opposition to slavery is credited with nearly single-handedly ending the slave trade in the British Empire. The Bunns, who, as an aside, are thorough researchers, seamlessly weave in the actual historical events, as well as the influence and significance of Wilberforce, without making readers feel as if they've just sat through a history class.
Finally, one more strength (do the Bunns have any literary weaknesses? I think not) is the convincing settings they manage to create --- no mean feat, considering the distinctly different geographical areas in which the action takes place. The Caribbean islands, South Carolina, Venice, the ports and countryside of England, as well as London --- all are vividly depicted and ring true to what we know of those places at that time.
If you've never read historical fiction, this book is a great one to start with. Though part of a series, it's definitely a stand-alone. There's no need to read the other books in the series, though I can't imagine not wanting to.
This series should be made into a movie!.......2005-10-06
This third book in the series "Heirs of Acadia" is generally on par with the award-winning first.....the one that got me hooked on the series.
Keeping a series going, and keeping my interest, is not easy. By the 3rd book of Left Behind I was in the "lets get it over with" mode. But The Noble Fugitive somehow manages, once again, to knit a tale of romance and morality together with historical accuracy, and come out with a winner. Each of the 3 books stands on its own. One really need not read the previous two to follow this one, nor have to wait for the fourth in the series to answer dangling questions; rather, it is complete enough in itself. Yet, each book is so enjoyable, with the primary characters becomming comfortable friends, its hard not to anticipate the next.
Most romance novels with a female lead tend to paint her as a delicate flower who wilts under too much heat, and then needs to be rescued. The combination of Davis's ability to construct these sudden twists and turns in Serafina's life that seem natural and not at all contrived, and the obvious influence Isabella brings by steadily developing the strong character of Serafina in a manner that a woman can identify with...even look up to....makes this wonderful and edifying reading.
I suppose we all look for different things from a fiction book; I love the way Davis and Isabella can carve out a moment in time and take me back to an era I would like to have lived in. And, just like in real life, chapter by chapter new faces come and most go, each with their own special influence on Serafina's life.....though she might not have realized their impact as it was unfolding.
This is quick moving, yet thought provoking, reading; and it demonstrates how only God can bring together strange situations and an unlikely variety of people for a common cause that surely is under His watchful eye and ever-guiding hand. I recommend this to my Christian bretheren, especially, because its not easy, anymore, to find an interesting book that reflects our values and hopes, yet does so in a way that isn't blatantly idealistic or merely a disguised sermon.
A Strong Historical Read!!!.......2005-09-26
There is nothing I enjoy more than reading a historical novel where the reader can tell that a fair amount of research has gone into the details. Any fan of historical novels will find this element in "The Noble Fugitive."
Serafina is the youngest daughter of a well respected Venetian leader. She is aware that she must do her duty and marry, but she has already given her heart away to an artist named Luca. After her mother catches her in a compromising situation they sequester her until they decide what to do with her. Her father and mother than decide to start a new life in a new place...America. Serafina goes along with this plan on the surface. Secretly she has made plans...plans that she will see through. But when she escapes the ship that is bound for America she realizes sooner rather than later that her dreams of love and a happy life with Luca are just that...dreams. With no other recourse she finds herself a chambermaid at Harrow Hall where she meets John Falconer. John seems like a kindered spirit. He has his own scars both externally and internally, and his life is in danger due to his stance on slave trading. Together a bound forms that neither expected. But will they be able to find a balance and will faith and love be enough when outside forces press in?
As a fan of anything historical this read truly fed that aspect of my soul. Serafina and John are such wonderfully created characters that the reader will truly care about what is going to happen to them and their bond is truly unique and special. Although this is book three in a series it is still a strong stand alone read and the authors have done a fine job setting up the next in this series. This is a entertaining read and one that I recommend.

Book Description
Nearly every young author dreams of writing a book that will literally change the world. A few have succeeded, and
Harriet Beecher Stowe is such a marvel. Although the American anti-slavery movement had existed at least as long as the nation itself, Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) galvanized public opinion as nothing had before. The book sold 10,000 copies in its first week and 300,000 in its first year. Its vivid dramatization of slavery’s cruelties so aroused readers that it is said Abraham Lincoln told Stowe her work had been a catalyst for the Civil War.
Today the novel is often labeled condescending, but its characters—Tom, Topsy, Little Eva, Eliza, and the evil Simon Legree—still have the power to move our hearts. Though “Uncle Tom” has become a synonym for a fawning black yes-man, Stowe’s Tom is actually American literature’s first black hero, a man who suffers for refusing to obey his white oppressors. Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a living, relevant story, passionate in its vivid depiction of the cruelest forms of injustice and inhumanity—and the courage it takes to fight against them.

Uncle Tom's Cabin: History Without the Textbook.......2005-07-04
Uncle Tom's Cabin, which is set between 1840 and 1850, is a novel that brought the cruelties of slavery into American homes. It unveils how slaves, like Uncle Tom and Eliza, were treated by slave owners, like Simon Legree. Throughout the novel there's a strong contrast between good and evil, which is personified by the different slave owners. First, Tom and Eliza serve a Christian family. Tom embraces Christianity through his compassion for others, honesty, evangelism, humbleness and his obedience without compromising his beliefs. Eliza, a beautiful Christian mulatto, shows her courage and love for her son. This love becomes strongest when she escapes with him to Canada after he's sold to pay debts. In the meantime, Tom is sold to Simon Legree. Simon displays evilness in his strength, greed and brutality. After Tom's friend escapes the plantation, Tom is blamed. The plot thickens when in Eliza's journey to Canada, she literally skates over thin ice as her son's master is close behind. Overall, the book was well written and the introduction omitted need for further research. Ms. Stowe is outstanding at exposing the severity of the slavery atmosphere without today's Hollywood gore. The historical accuracy is shown throughout the novel as The Fugitive Slave Law is mentioned and Harriet provides parallels between actual people and the story's characters. However, as the introduction states, Stowe claims both that slavery is evil for exaggerating differences between races and denying similarities. Overall Stowe is noteworthy and her book should be read because it influenced attitudes towards slavery, and embeds historical events interestingly.

Money Talks Bullshi*t Walks...............2007-09-15

Cheating men, scandalous acquaintenances, hot sex, heartbreak, pain, lawsuits, murders, and life changing situations fill the pages of this sequel.
This book is defintely a rollercoaster ride, but it was well written. the ending left me hanging!!! I hope there is a part 3!!!
People hate it when you love your life.......2007-09-12
It's five years later and the gangs all here. Still sad that Simone committed suicide the girls keep her memory alive.
In love and happier then ever Portia and Jay are doing well, they have 2 children to be thankful for and a marriage that is blessed by god.
Fatima and Wise are trying to save their marriage and not give up on love.
Laila is at her witts end with Khalil he has turned a to life she can not condone while one daughter wants to soar her wild oats in the streets and the other daughter turns out to be her rock.
Casino "Cas" is still Cas married to Jay's little sister is more of a headache then he ever thought it would be 5 years later.
Jay as usual tries to help anyone and every one he can, not knowing the one person he is fighting so hard to help is the one person that is hating the life he and his partners are living.
Ms. McGill put this story together well using her signature story telling she weaves HIV and AIDS awareness throughout the story and holds your attention with the drama, sex, and violence.

More action with the Grey Knights in the second book of this popular ongoing series. A crack team of Grey Knights Space Marines is sent down to investigate, and discover a nightmare world where technology runs riot, and titanic war machines have been possessed by daemons.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting concept, flawed antagonists.......2007-01-08
This is an interesting concept, and fairly entertaining execution. The background and depiction of the adeptus mechanicus is interesting, given that not a lot has been written about them as far as I know. The protagonists vary from interesting to rather one-sided (the inquisitor particularly), however, the book does have a major flaw in that the antagonists are almost entirely one-dimensional.
spoilers
the captain of the enemy ship, a human from the heresy (a chaos space marine IIRC) with over 10,000 years of military and command experience, and handpicked by Abaddon for this mission, upon seeing the tribute destroyed, ravages the local area and its extremely valuable assets, rather than using a brain and reasoning that the evidence of recent combat, presence of imperial vessel, and the tribute's destruction were caused by enemies and not by the planet itself. He was also 'stupid' enough to leave surviving fragments of the imperial fleet behind him so that our characters would have a way to leave.
the castigator is sufficiently stupid to want to make a big personal deal of killing up close rather than just use its power and the titan's weaponry and get the job done. It is also nice that the castigator explains everything to alaric before deciding to kill him.
It is also interesting to note that if you compare the characters of the chaos ship captain, the castigator, and scaeras (spelled wrong), they are all pretty much the same.
Good Action - Just Don't Look Too Close.......2006-09-18
This is the second book of the Grey Knights series, and much like the first it's primarily a tale of action rather than character development. Justicar Alaric and his squad return as the central heroes of the tale, supported by Inquisitor Nyxos, Interrogator Hawkwspur, Magos Antigonus, and others. The author sets the novel in the familiar Warhammer 40,000 (40K) universe developed for the tabletop game by Games Workshop.
M. Counter is an action-oriented writer, and some of the other tools of the writer's craft don't receive as much attention. His exposition tends to be applied with brute force, starting with Magos Antigonus' dictation of his current situation to his servitor, and followed by occasional instances of characters talking for the benefit of the reader more than that of their fellows. Plot devices come similarly applied, with saviors emerging - literally - from the ground, villains suddenly discovering new purpose, or faith somehow destroying physical enemies. The combination makes suspension of disbelief difficult at times, and it jars one out of the flow of an otherwise solid plot.
The large-scale plotline, and his handling of the Dark Adeptus Mechanicus synonymous with the title, is actually quite well done. The basis for the story is interesting and pulled from an unexplored portion of the 40K background: the heretically corrupt sect of the Adeptus Mechanicus that sided with Horus and chaos during the Horus Heresy. The action scenes are similarly well done, but sometimes the heroes remain functional after soaking up rather a lot of damage, even for Space Marines. A Marine's broken arm that "folds uselessly" one moment delivers a "two-handed strike" that runs his enemy completely through seconds later.
The protagonists have simple motivations and enough character depth to support the action. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the antagonists of the tale. Their intelligence and decisions at any given moment depend on how much the author needs to pull one of the aforementioned plot devices out of his hat. They come to startling personal revelations that change their course of action, and sometimes even their form, usually to the benefit of the heroes. When frustrated from one goal, in a fit of rage, they destroy all the things that could have helped them continue their fight.
Though creative, M. Counter's feel for the 40K background just doesn't quite mesh with the established tone set by the other authors of the Black Library stable. Some elements just don't sit well with established canon, such as an individual existing entirely as information that can jump from machine to machine as necessary.
Excepting the points above, the book is generally solid, and any fan of either the Grey Knights or the Adeptus Mechanicus should enjoy it, as will any fan of an action yarn that isn't particular about well-written villains or jarring plot twists.
Counter delivers a very good follow-up sequel to Grey Knights.......2006-02-15
Ben Counter's one of my favorite Black Library writers in addition to Dan Abnett and William King. Counter's already written one series of Warhammer 40,000 novels for the Black Library: the excellent Soul Drinkers Saga. Counter added to that by starting a second series that focuses on the daemonhunting, space marine chapter of the Grey Knights. The self-titled intro novel of Counter's second series started off with a bang and kep the foot on the gas.
Dark Adeptus is the second novel in this new series and continues the adventures of Grey Knight Justicar Alaric and the surviving members of his squad. Their mission this time around takes them far from the raging war near the Eye of Terror as Abbadon and his 13th Black Crusade continues its attempt to break through the Imperium's defenses for a bee-line to Terra (Earth). Alaric, his squad, a senior Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and a small Naval fleet are sent to a backwaters system to investigate the sudden appearance of an Adeptus Mechanicus Forge World which had disappeared a century earlier and from a different location.
As soon as they arrive Alaric and his squad senses something terribly wrong about the reappearance of Forge World Chaeronias. This wrong start to their mission becomes even more complicated with the arrival of a Mechanicus ship also sent to investigate the reappearance of one of their own forge worlds. As with all Warhammer 40k novels allies sometimes work as if they're the enemy as each organization work towards their own agenda.
Counter does a good job in continuing the growth of Alaric as a unique character in the 40K universe. He does give Alaric abit more time being a holy crusader as seen in some of Alaric's dialogue, but Counter doesn't go overboard to make the character regress as a character. Counter expertly details the organization of the Adeptus Mechanicus and its relationship with the other groups in the Imperium. The way all these groups vie for control and any little advantage one wonders how the Imperium of Man has survived for 10,000 years.
The action is less epic than Grey Knights despite the epic location in this sequel. The action slowly builds up until the final confrontation in the ash and dune wastes of Chaeronias as Alaric, his squad and his erstwhile Mechanicus allies finally confront the corruption and cause of Chaeronias disappearance and troubles. Dark Adeptus finally gives a good accounting of one of the mysterious details of the Warhammer 40K universe and it involves the Mechanicus and a certain template.
In the end, Ben Counter goes a good job with this sequel to Grey Knights. I would say that it's not right at the same level of quality as Grey Knights, but not to say it's a terrible book. It's actually a very good novel but it just took a different tone than the rip-roaring first novel. Dark Adeptus does help in bringing to light more of the shadowy unreleased details of the 40K universe. I can't wait for Counter to release another novel detailing the exploits of Justicar Alaric and his Grey Knights. I highly recommend this book to fans of Warhammer 40k novels. They won't be disappointed.
Not as Good as the First One....but What Is?.......2006-02-08
I really enjoyed this book. The Grey Knights are my favorite Space Marine Chapter in the Black Library, and this is a fantastic book. The Dark Adeptus have never appeared in any story before this novel(at least to my knowledge), but I had some issues with them. It just seemed like they are not really evil enough. I was expecting something a little more dark. Also, the Grey Knights themselves did not really recieve the attention to detail that they had in the first novel. With the exception of Dvorn and Alaric, the Grey Knights are somewhat 2 dimensional. Another minor complaint is the battle scenes; any Space Marine, let alone the Grey Knights, should not be presented as being on the defensive. I expect a Space Marine to be far more assertive than Alaric and his squad were sometimes portrayed.
Those are nothing but small complaints, and it is really not fair of us to expect Ben Counter to write a sequel that is every bit as good as the first Grey Knights novel was. This is still a very good book. Those of you who enjoy a good Space Marine story will enjoy reading this.

Karl Keating defends Catholicism from fundamentalist attacks and explains why fundamentalism has been so successful in converting ``Romanists". After showing the origins of fundamentalism, he examines representative anti-Catholic groups and presents their arguments in their own words. His rebuttals are clear, detailed, and charitable. Special emphasis is given to the scriptural basis for Catholic doctrines and beliefs.

Read this!.......2007-05-16
I'm gonna keep this short and simple, a more thorough critique can be read further down. I am 16 and find this book great. It was fairly easy to understand and was able to clear up many things I had questions on about my own faith, and I know now that I can defend it much better. Therefore, recommended for Catholics. I also recommend it to any Protestant, not just Fundamentalists, because this refutes basically all arguments Protestants have against the Church. They must be open though, not read this in a close minded fashion, of course. Find the truth! Read the Bible, but read this as well, to get you started on understanding how only the Catholic faith is in complete accordance to Scripture (and apostolic Tradition as well).
Encyclopedic Source.......2007-05-09
During this time of securalism when many think attacks on the Church come from secularists Keating presents the attacks by so-called Bible Christians. He presents various anti-Catholic groups listing their common beliefs in Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide and then shows how these doctrines are unscriptural. Calling themselves literal bible readers Keating shows that when it comes to the Eucharist, Confession and the Church there is no adherence to the literal reading of the Bible. He actively explains the fallacies of those non-mainline protestant Churches that began in the latter part of the 19th Century. Keating provides a history of the "bible christians" from their establishment in the latter 19th century to today. There are other books but this is truly an encyclopedia of the basics and comes highly recommended for those seeking the truth.

The definitive defense.......2007-05-02
Misunderstandings abound between Protestant and Catholic. Very few seem capable of a cogent and well-reasoned response to the accusations of the side with which they disagree. This definitive defense of the Roman Catholic faith against Protestant misconceptions, misunderstandings, and misrepresentations, is one exception.
Few have responded so directly to the accusers as has Dr. Keating. While he pulls no punches, he does correct and explain with patience and love which even the most vehement Protestant will respect. This is not the lame ecumenicalist whining about how we ought to all just accept each other; this is a scholarly and well-organized systematic apologetic well worth the time of any with a serious desire to understand and learn. Dr. Keating quotes from many of the Protestant teachers and theologians including Loraine Boetner, Keight Green, Jimmy Swagart and others - allowing each to demonstrate in their own words how they misunderstand or even mislead.
This work is destined to be the classic defense of historical and biblical Roman Catholic faith against classic Protestant (particularly Fundamentalist) attacks.
Understanding Catholicism and Common Criticisms Against It.......2007-03-19
This comment was inspired by my Catholic friend Sabina whose testament to the faith brought me back to it: The Catholic and Orthodox Churches are ancient Christianity and its mysticism and born before the rise of capitalism during the European renaissance. The dark ages weren't really dark, the Church held things together, and fuedalism ruled the day. It is referred to as dark because people weren't making money hand over fist and the gluttony of the Roman empire was gone. Protestantism arose during this commercialization of society and a return to rampant secularization. Catholicism is about a life of purification and an intimate understanding of the transient of the material. Protestantism was born in rebellion, immersed in collusion of materialism, promoted in the spirit of fear and judgment, and then spread through the wills of puritanical zeal. Catholics were the enemy and theology reflected that. Had the Catholic church worked with Martin Luther the distortion of a Protestant work ethic to get things in this world wouldn't have given rise to the fanatical evangelical zeal and fear-based conversion campaigns. Catholics and Orthodox do not evangelize because they are secure in their position. The attacks on Rome are about rebellion and splinter from the theological issues Luther had with the Vatican.
Keep in mind too the enormous political power of the Vatican and the one billion Catholics in the world. This is what is at stake too - political influence. This life is about purification. Catholics and Orthodox understand well that a spiritual life is not meant to be easy. Protestants are still somewhat trying to get things, expect things, and demand things. The Catholic church was instrumental in the rise of civilization and its ancient roots are what bible Christians can't seem to grasp.
This Book Changes Lives.......2007-03-08
When I became skeptical of my Catholic Church's biblical foundations, I researched protestant alternatives. I bought this book at a seminar and everything changed. Karl Keating (a former attorney) lays out a thorough and compelling case for the Catholic Church as the "One True Church", and defends it against common Bible-based attacks made by other Christian faiths. The book takes a two-pronged approach: first by giving a thorough explanation of how the Church became what it is (complete with Biblical references where appropriate), and second by detailing the history of fallacious "Bible based" attacks made against the Catholic Church by other Christian denominations. The research and reasoning in this book are rock-solid. Catholics, ex-Catholics, and "Bible Christians" who give this book a fair and thorough reading will not look at the Catholic Church the same way. This book has stopped defections, retreived lost lambs, and created converts. It is powerful stuff that no intellectually honest Christian seeker should ignore.

Detailed and completely researched.......2004-08-09
This work is absolutely one of the best written that deals with this issue. It is extreemly well researched and documented and a must read no matter what your point of view is on this subject. If you want to address these issues in an informed and educated way then this work is key to the entire argument that exists between Bible Christians and Roman Catholics. I wish I had found this book years ago. I have read many of the works cited within this book on my own during my own spiritual journey and can say that each was fairly and accurately used. It is a "must read" for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Anyone who wishes to make an informed decision about Christianity can start their journey here.

Clear, concise and beautiful!.......2000-03-28
This book was one of the first books that lead me on my spiritual journey in Catholicism. Karl Keating explains with clear logic and and excellent use of scripture the fundamental beliefs of the Catholic faith. The book is very well documented and easy to read. I would not only recommend it to those who are outside the Church, but also those who wish to learn more about their faith.
