A gyp.......2007-06-18
What I think is most amazing is the fact that the publisher had the audacity to put a $10-plus price on this and double that for the Large Print version. The book is no more than a short short story with some mundane illustrations. The story itself is rather nice, but it really belonged in one of the first four novels in the series.
I think it's worth the money........2003-01-26
A very sweet book. I found it a true value: a delight for Mitford series readers plus a chance to introduce the characters to the youngsters. My 10 year old dyslexic son now wants the Mitford series read aloud to him. Look at her children's books: Miss Fannie's Hat and Jeremy.
Not even worthy of being a book..........2003-01-10
I could type the entire book in this section and save you the trouble of checking it out, but I won't, because that would be copyright infringement. But this book is less than 1000 words. There isn't even a moral to the story - it's just a story about several of the Mitford residents building snowmen in front of the stores on Main Street. This is SUCH an obvious attempt to milk the Mitford series for more money without having to actually write another novel. I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I wasn't expecting a long story, but I was expecting something to happen! Philip Gulley writes short stories in all of his books and each of them have a meaning or moral and most aren't that much longer than this book. Seems to me that it would have been easy enough to write a short story with a moral or lesson, but alas, no. Read it IN the library - don't even bother checking the book out.
The Mitford Snowmen.......2003-01-03
Don't waste your money. It takes less that 10 min. to read and I didn't even find it very entertaining. I was so disappointed! I have enjoyed all of Jan Karon's other books but I feel she wrote a few lines to earn some extra cash. I am so disappointed I may not buy another thing that she writes!
WAY too short!.......2002-12-23
If you're a real Mitford fan, you will want to read this book. I settled down for a cozy little read, but I was disappointed that it took me less than 5 minutes to read the whole book, start to finish!
I love Jan Karon and Mitford, but this is such a tiny taste... Perhaps if you think of it as a Christmas card and not a book! Merry Christmas to all!
Book Description
Since he was a boy growing up in Mississippi, Father Tim has lived what he calls "the life of the mind." Except for cooking and gardening and washing his dog, he never learned to savor the work of his hands. And then he finds a derelict nativity scene-twenty figures, including a flock of sheep, that have suffered the indignities of time and neglect.
Could he give the small company new life? Restore the camel's ear, repaint every piece, replace a missing nose on a wise man? "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" he reminds himself. It's when he imagines the excitement in Cynthia's eyes that he steps up to the plate-and begins a small journey of faith that touches everyone around him.
The eighth novel in the bestselling Mitford Years series is a meditation on the best of all presents-the gift of one's heart. Lovingly written and beautifully illustrated, it seeks to restore the true Christmas spirit and give everyone a seat at Mitford's holiday table.
"This Mitford story presented itself to me, quite unexpectedly, and asked to be told. I hope readers will find it a perfect refuge from the holiday frenzy." -Jan Karon

Customer Reviews:
the best yet of Jan Karon.......2007-09-24
I loved all of her Mitford series books, but this one was a true delight. Save it for December - it will mean more to read it during Advent. Praises for a sweet story.
Too much repeat from previous books.......2007-08-23
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Mitford Series, having read them more than once. A book that is written in such a way as to have you laughing out loud is a well-written book that allows you to become part of the cast of characters. I was disappointed in Shepherds Abiding because it seemed to me to be excerpts from other books and lacked the humor so integral ot the others. I don't like to have authors ride on their success by rehashing rather than creating. If Jan Karon has nothing new to say about Mitford then she should be honest about it and let the series stand on its own merits.
Winding down.......2007-06-10
This comparatively short installment in the nine-volume Mitford saga deals with one Christmas season in the little North Carolina town. By itself it would not be worthwhile; one has to have read the preceding seven books in the series for this to mean anything at all.
There is a certain O Henry "Gift of the Magi" sense to the plot. Father Tim labors in secret over an elaborate Christmas gift for his wife, while she works secretly over something for him. Creaky Billy makes a "Santy" for his mentally fading wife. Townspeople plan a party for the closing of their favorite eatery. In brief, not all that much of significance is taking place here. Somehow one senses that the writer is winding down the series toward the inevitable. After all, this can't go on forever.
There are the usual prayers for this and that--prayers on virtually every page, as if they, per se, were action. And with the proper stacking of the cards, all prayers are answered. I knew they would be: I read the previous seven books, and that's how it works every time.
The unfortunate thing about the Mitford books is that they tend to go downhill or be repetitive after the first three or four. For the reader who just can't get enough of the characters, this is fine. But I like to see a little more change.
Enjoyable and uplifting story.......2007-03-19
This was easy reading and enjoyable, but there really wasn't a story plot. Would have liked to know who made the manger.
Shepherds Abiding (The Midford Years).......2007-01-30
As with all Karon's books in the Midford Series, this one does not let you down. You will contine to want to read more about the characters and find out what becomes of each one.

TINY TREASURE.......2005-10-25
These two small books are nicely illustrated. Each book contains one very short, heartwarming story. (They can be read in about ten minutes.) The stories are enjoyable and well written. It's important that the buyer realizes that they are not novels, like the rest of the Mitford series.
OH WOW!!.......2004-08-18
We got the recipe and a wonderful book to read every Christmas to remind you what is important. Esther's Gift is very short but the perfect book to get you in the mood for Christmas. I will remember to read it every year!
for the Baker at heart..........2004-01-11
I'm just a 32 yr.old Mom & wife, for now.,this is for the Baker at heart...
I'd heard of these books, but couldn't remember the titles , nor the author. When I finally figured out which books they were, and found the books, I orded the gift set, 'The Mitford Snowmen', and 'Esther's gift', for my self, just to 'try a few out', without buying the whole set. A friend said I'd love them, because I love to bake, and am also an avid reader. I love to try new and decadent desserts, to always top whatever my previous triumph had been. These 2 small books were a joy to read, and I am looking forward to reading all the others, as well as passing them on to other friends or family to read. Esther seems to be just like me, with all her worries, and her heart is always in the right place. I must say that I was a bit dissappointed at the short length of the books (they are only short stories), but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, as I know that they are larger books. The Marmalade cake is GLORIOUS!! Never have I had any cake so wonderful. I recommend this to any woman who enjoys good, old-fashioned home-town stories; whom love to entertain, cook, and hear stories about the kind of characters we can all relate to.
Also recommended: Katherine Hepburn biography; 'Kate Remembered',any and all 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' books, all the Anne Rice trilogies,Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit. 'Taste of Home','Reminisce ','Cooking Light',&'Gourmet'magazine

Let It Snow in Mitford & Wherever You Are!.......2005-11-28
Jan Karon has written several volumes on Mitford, North Carolina, and the main charactres, Father Tim Kavanaugh, Cynthia Coppersmith, Emma Newland, and Ester Bolin among others. In this Christmas story, first published in 2001, we learn that Mitford has a woman mayor, Esther Cunningham, who declares every snowman builder a winner of doughnuts and hot chocolate. We visit Winnie Ivie's Sweet Stuff Bakery and Happy Endings Bookstore there on Main Street.
This volume along with ESTHER'S GIFT (in which the annual marmalade cakes show the real meaning of gift-giving at Christmas) was sold as a gift set in 2003 and included in SHEPHERDS ABIDING in 2004. Another favorite of mine is A NEW SONG (2000). She also issued MITFORD COOKBOOK AND KITCHEN READER. Her children's books include JEREMY BUNNY and MISS FANNIE'S HAT (OR CAT). This is a cute little gift book perfect as a stocking stuffer with a place to personalize it in the front. I found it at the public library, but it is available here at Amazon.com in different packages. Take your pick. And have a Merry Christmas Holiday Season. "Christ is the reason for Christmas."

WAY dated!!!.......2007-09-15
Soldier of Fortune: First published in mid-80s, and attitudes toward sexuality VERY outdated.
(She is an adult professional living in Chicago (with no past traumas/issues) and she has never even gone to second base???)
The heroine is supposed to be (simultaneously) way into a merc TV show, but totally unaware of any of the weapons used?
She is also completely naive about her body/sexuality (and she grew up on a ranch???) -- so naive as to belong to another century. She does not have the attitude of a modern woman who has chosen to be picky about when to share her body with someone; she has the a-sexuality of the forced, complete ignorance of aristocratic female children from Georgian England.
Also, characters not consistent in the attitudes/development of feeling towards each other or about themselves. Result is that entire relationship is superficial-- boring....
Great Book!!!!!!.......2006-06-12
I really loved Soldier of Fortune. The second story was a bit too far fetched for me too like. In Soldier of Fortune, Gabby has worked for J.D. for years and they still haven't gotten to know eachother. Then J.D.'s sister is kidnapped and they go off to save her together. Sparks fly when after his sister is saved they run into a little trouble and Gabby ends up saving J.D.'s life. He isn't thrilled about that and he makes it known. He pushes Gabby out of his life. Then realizes he was wrong. I loved these two together. I thought they were a perfect match. There was a lot of romance in this story between Gabby and J.D. For Diana Palmer fans you know that the male in her stories are sometimes overbearing, but I think it fit in this story perfectly because of J.D's life. Lots of action also, when they are fighting in the jungle.
The second story, I didn't like as much. It moved way too fast for me at the beginning and way too slow at the end. It seemed that Eric was taking too much time trying to figure out what he wanted. Dani just let Eric walk all over her in this story and I don't think once she stood up for herself. The only thing she held her ground on was that she wouldn't be with him if he didn't give up his job, and even then she let him come back again and again whenever he wanted. They met in Mexico on a vacation. They fall in love almost instantly and then she learns she is pregnant and he comes back, but then he spends the rest of the book trying to decide if he wants her or not.
Mercinaries with hard hearts...........2006-06-09
This book is of two great mercinary men and two equally strong women.
Soldier of fortune.... Gabby Darwin is a paralegal for one of the most pristine criminal lawyers in the city of Chicago, J.D.Brettman. When J.D.'s (Jacob Dane) sister is kidnapped and held for ransom, he asks Gabby to go on the hunt with him.
Will Gabby find the love she seeks in the midst of the jungle? Will J.D. ever learn to trust those who are close to him?
The Tender Stranger.... After going to a book singing and now headed towards a few days of vacation in Mexico, Dani St. Clair's life will forever be changed. On her flight in to Mexico seated next to a blond giant who makes her hot all over. That giant happens to be one of J.D.'s best friends and merc buddy. Things happen fast while in Mexico for these two, who end up married. On the way home the plane is hijacked and Erics' true colors start to show. Will Dani be able to accept Eric and his choice of career? Will Eric let the past rule his future?
I love both of these stories. The hero's were great even though a bite rough. but redemed themselves. As for the women, what can I say that I agree with both of them and how they acted was something that I would have done myself.
Cuddle up with this book.......2006-02-25
Once again Diana Palmer has combined romance, mystery and intrigue in two stories with an exotic flavor. Both heroes are great, although J.D. in Soldier of Fortune would have rated a good kick from me once or twice. But watching his redemption and seeing the romance uinfold was good. The Tender Stranger was a little different in the way the story ubnfolded, but Eric and Dani are a combustible couple and watcing them conmes to terms with their relationship made a very satisfying story.

Book Description
On Arrakis, now called Rakis, known to legend as Dune, ten times ten centuries have passed. The planet is becoming desert again. The Lost Ones are returning home from the far reaches of space. The great sandworms are dying, and the Bene Gesserit and the Bene Tleilax struggle to direct the future of Dune. The children of Dune's children awaken as from a dream, wielding the new power of a heresy called love.
"The spectacular new addition to 'The most magnificent achievement in SF history!'" (Baltimore Sun)
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
The Dune timeline again jumps in millenial chunks. Leto's Scattering has come to pass. The people out there have changed, and are now returning, as a threat. The Bene Gesserit are the people that realise this, and are preparing.
The Honoured Matres are the worst of these, a female order somewhat similar to the Bene Gesserit but using sex and violence overtly to get what they want.
The Bene Gesserit have a super soldier/mentat named Miles Teg, who rescues another Ducan Idaho ghola the Tleilax have plans for. Teg has superhuman speed on all counts.
The Tleilax are worried the Bene Gesserit and Honoured Matres may work together, and Idaho is part of their plan to prevent this, he has been trained as a counter agent to the sexual domination powers of the Matres, enabling him to turn one of them.
The Matres want to destroy the planets with sandworms, but the Bene Gesserit, with Teg's help, manage to save one, and can take it back to one of their strongholds, to start the cycle again.
Its still great.......2007-02-28
Its not as good as the first book, but definitely better than "God Emporer". The entire Dune series as a whole is excellent. I recommend it to anyone interested in reading quality sci-fi.
Yamabushi's mini reviews XXVI.......2007-02-09
the worst of the Dune books, you keep reading, and reading thinking its got to get better and it never does. But its Dune, and Herbet Jr. Is already doing the sequels, and Chapterhouse is out there and you'll be lost. So put your head down and keep plugging away.
The Adventures of Duncan Idaho.......2006-10-14
Heretics of Dune (the fifth book in the series), set over one-thousand years after the conclusion of God Emperor, continues the story of the Dune universe. This novel centers on Duncan Idaho, and further explores his adventures over the span of the series. Several new characters, concepts, and worlds are introduced in this novel, but one of the highlights is a new character by the name of Miles Teg. This new character, along with Duncan and the return of the scattered ones makes for a fantastic novel. If you have read the first four books, by all means don't stop now; continue on here.
Not the best of the Dune saga, but still an entertaining read.......2006-06-25
Heretics takes place 1500 years after the death of Leto the Tyrant and some five thousand years after the original Dune novel. Human domains face a new challange, that of the return of "The Scattering" that left in the wake of the famine that followed Leto the Second's death. There is a powerful new group that has entered the scene, a group of women known as the Honored Matres who can control men with their newly discovered techniques of sexual prowess.
Due to the superior numbers of the Honored Matres and their new sexual techniques, the Bene Gesserit are on their heels. However, they have both a new Duncan Idaho ghola and have found a girl who can communicate with the "Divided God" on Rakis (the current name for Dune.)
The Bene Gesserit devise a plan for their own survival, and it includes both the Idaho ghola and this Rakian girl. They will need to use all of their abilities and manipulate old rivals such as the Bene Tleilax to maintain their status.
This novel bounces around more than the others. The majority of the action occurs off of Rakis, though Rakis is vital in the plot of this fifth volume of this epic. With the extablishment fighting for its very survival against this new onslaught, a combination of creativity and desparation is both needed and evident.
Herbert has done a supurb job of keeping this story moving through the millenia as the characters keep changing, but the major "geopolitical" players remain the same (with the exception of the major new addition of the Honored Matres.)

Here in this collection of 365 daily meditations lives the essence of a great spiritual teacher -- one who truly understood the wellspring of life. The keen insights I captured here speak as freshly to the everyday needs of humanity as they did the day Fox first wrote them.
Culled from Fox's published and unpublished lecture notes and manuscripts, this guide for daily living also includes much-loved passages, from Sermon on the Mount, Fox's million-copy bestseller, along with the popular Power Through Constructive Thinking.

I bought this book for a friend because he really likes Emmet Fox. When I received the book, I leafed through it and found it very interesting. Once I gave my friend the book, I went to look something up in it, and realized it was not at my place anymore, I have decided that since I like it so much, I will order one for myself as well as one for my father for Christmas. Emmet Fox is very logical and inspiring. He is a great teacher.
