Book Description
Turns an ordinary ride up an office escalator into a meditation on our relations with familiar objects--shoelaces, straws, and more. Baker's debut novel, and a favorite amongst many of us here.
Customer Reviews:
a great book from a neat writer.......2007-08-21
I had to read Nichelson Baker for my critical thinking class in 1995 and was undeniably impressed with his book, outside of the classroom. Some have a knack, others have a gift, and Mr Bakers pen has been touched by the comedic hand of god settling him firmly in the later.
From the ergonomics of turn signal devices in japanese cars(they feel like human joints when you activate them) to the bathroom stall noises of public restrooms soundling like soup cans, Mr Baker has a keen zen like perception with the word that puts the reader in distinct focus by using very common settings. His awareness of the world around him and his acute attention to detail lend a lot of credibility to those of us who are fascinated with randomness, the placement of everything, physical objectivity in our personal experiences of the world. One of my favorite writers. The Fermata is very funny too.
Just Pleasure in Reading.......2007-07-26
There is very little to take away from this book. And that is praiseworthy.
If you feel you must find some kind of meaning, you could make a case that our life is lived in the minutiae that we ignore and not in the grand moments we choose to remember.
Follow a man on his common trip out of a building and across the square. Use this book to fill some idle minutes reading rather than on a sitcom.
How do YOUR Shoelaces Break?.......2007-01-17
You just have to read this. You will never look at a plastic straw the same way again. What should I say? That it's about escalators and shoelaces and personal-care products? This is a true example of a story being about HOW it's told, not what it's about. A hundred obervations of everyday minutiae, and voila. Life.
Grab the escalator into Howie's world of ideas..........2006-12-01
We drown in information. Terabytes and petabytes of it slosh over us every day. Many decide to remain oblivious to this assault and ignore the fascinating minutiae that lurk in obscure peripheral corners. They miss a lot. Howie, the "hero" of Nicholson Baker's first novel, "The Mezzanine," provides an antidote for this myopia. Throughout the short novel, he pulls back, like onion skin, the conceptual strata of common experience to reveal the wonderous microcosms beneath. Where many of us see a plastic straw, Howie sees a spectrum of engineering discoveries, plastic-to-paper buoyancy and porosity ratios, and tiny ebbs and flows in the quality of life. He scrutinizes things at the quantum level, such as the differences between "oop" and "oops," the various ways to end a conversation with a co-worker, and the theoretical means by which a shoelace wears to breaking point. Howie thrives on micro-analysis. He floats in information as though it were a soothing amniotic fluid.
A portrait in text, "The Mezzanine" presents a first person character study of a detail fanatic. One hundred and thirty five pages relate the mental and physical events of a single lunch hour. Anything worthy of the slightest notice receives apt attention and many of the observations steer Howie into his past or into his private life. For instance, he lists his major developmental advances. These include "shoe tying," "brushing tongue as well as teeth," and "putting on deodorant after I was fully dressed." Worried about reaching his "majority," he calculates the number of new thoughts required to overtake the puerile thoughts that have collected in his brain since age six. Only when these new thoughts preponderate will he consider himself "fully developed" and able to "really understand things." Later on, he reflects on the periodicity of thoughts. How often a person thinks about a thing may reveal more about them than their professed beliefs. Howie analyzes his own thoughts and includes a chart with rows for "Subject of Thoughts" and "Number of Times Thought Occurred in Year." This does reveal a lot about Howie. In particular, the most affection he shows for his girlfriend, referred to obliquely as "L.," is by placing her name at the top of this list. Other references to her seem devoid of emotion. But the fact that he actually made such a list probably says more about Howie than the items that appear on it. Parallel to the main text, copious footnotes capture Shandean digressions that sublimate ancillary thoughts for pages on end. These often flood the main narrative, leaving a mere few lines bobbing atop the page. No branch of Howie's ruminations gets neglected.
"The Mezzanine" defies summary. The figures, ideas, facts, theories, images, and metaphors zoom by at hyperspeed, sometimes to an overwhelming degree. Collectively they turn the brain into a bloated sac teeming with an incomprehensible degree of data. Somehow this intellectual miasma becomes a highly engaging read. As if listening to someone ramble on about every detail that occurs to them moment by moment could be entertaining. Somehow it is and the effect remains spellbinding and illuminating throughout. The highly readable, verging on gimmicky, prose and the often hilarious imagery move the book along at a surprising pace. Regardless, at times the text lumbers down and sags under its own weight, but these moments don't come often enough to detract from the book as a whole. And though it lacks a plot, the book nonetheless suggests new ways of seeing and experiencing everyday life. Either that or the reader will thank their lucky stars that they didn't turn out like Howie. He does at times seem rather cold and emotionless, as though ideas and facts have replaced the very blood in his veins. What does L. think of him? One can only imagine after Howie relates the earplug story that ends with L. pleading "See how much I love you?" Even that doesn't seem to move him. Some questions remain: does Howie's life, though bursting with information and fascinating trivia, have any meaning? Is this a concrete-sequential horror story about someone stuck in the sterile world of facts? Or does Howie represent the modern enlightened individual basking in technology and ideas? The reader of course must decide, but one thing seems certain: "The Mezzanine" provides enough food for thought to survive multiple readings.
the visible hand.......2006-04-09
If you don't spend a lot of time contemplating your shoe laces, this book may come as somewhat of a revelation to you. A very, very minor revelation. The fact is that someone probably spent a good part of their professional life developing and testing that shoe lace, and someone else spent many hours fine-tuning it to make it as pleasing as a shoe lace can possibly be. Same goes for escalators, plastic straws, and staplers. The neat thing about a market economy is that so many people spend so much time improving such minor commodities, just so they can exchange them with each other. Nicholson Baker has written a humorous and almost touching tribute to this system. Very enjoyable (although I don't think I would have wanted it to be any longer).

A Little Moonlight: She'd long ago resigned herself to looking after her invalid mother instead. Quiet, hardworking Serena was only too glad to be of service. Dutch consultant Marc ter Feueln changed all that when he became Serena's new employer. Arrogant, demanding and apparently blind to the interests of anyone but himself, he was not the sort of person Serena had ever before encountered. She was quite equal to the challenge, however. Her only problem was that in spite of all her efforts, she was falling in love.Christmas Wishes: the Proposal: Two mischievous dogs led Francesca Haley to a chance meeting with Dr. Renier Pitt-Colwyn, and a ragtag kitten won her his goddaughtter's heart. But the handsome Dutchman could hardly be interested in an ordinay girl like her; or could he? A Christmas Wish: Olivia Harding was far too practical to dream of being rescued-despite the dreary life she endured for her mother's sake. And she never could have imagined her knight in shining armor would be visiting surgeon Haso van der Eisler. Was there any chance Haso would ever see her as more than a damsel in distress? All Else Confusion: Jake was too good-looking, too rich, and too self-assured. Then a sudden shared grief broke down Annis's defenses against his attractiveness. Jakes' sudden marriage propsal made no pretense of love. "You're a sensible girl," he said. "Your head isn't cluttered with romantic ideas." Sensible? Hardly, but Annis had no choice, for any hope of future happiness depended on his falling in love with her.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A more convetional story structure is to be found here, as the pilgrims try and deal with an invasion, a Hegemony political leader, and an android avatar reincarnation of Keats.
They discover that the TechnoCore itself is fighting its own battles, and the spillover affects them in a very serious way.
Oh, and throw in some highly entertaining Catholic satire, to boot.
Like the first, try the second. A great read.......2007-08-25
"The Fall of Hyperion" by Dan Simmons
The pilgrims from Hyperion have finally reached the time tombs, but the Shrike has yet to reveal itself. All that can be done is wait for the Shrike to appear. The War that begun is still Raging in the Skies above Hyperion but the Hegemony is in for a surprise when it finds out there are other targets that the ousters have in mind. This leaves Meina Gladstone the Hegemony leader attempting to find a solution that will lead the hegemony to a safe outcome.
This book reads slightly different that the first one as all of the happenings are taking place in the present. With all of the pilgrims tales told in the first book all that is left is for the story to move forward. This is not to indicate that this book is any less enjoyable than the first only that is reads in a more traditional fashion.
There are a few more characters introduced that play major roles and evolve the story into something a little larger in scale than the first but Simmons still manages to devote plenty of pages to the remaining, original cast.
The Good: Similar good as "Hyperion" with a similar writing style with a more traditional structure. There is good story development and evolution and the story was enjoyable overall. It is hard to expand without giving away any of the story but if you liked Hyperion you will likely enjoy this book as well.
The Bad: Nothing memorable.
Overall: Read Hyperion first and if you like it definitely give this one a try.
a good ending to the story of hyperion.......2007-05-09
Although it is true that these two volumes
can be thought of as two parts of a long
book, the style of the two parts is very
different. The storytelling in this second part
is not completely linear, however it follows a
single style. While the recounting of the pilgrims'
stories in the first book showcased Dan Simmons'
mastery of a number of different fiction genres,
the complexity of the story lay in the interplay
between the tales, rather than the individual tales.
The writing in the "Fall of Hyperion" is a bit more
complex, and the story a bit more difficult to follow.
The book ends with many questions unanswered,
but is still a very satisfying read.
Intricately plotted sequel.......2007-04-23
In "The Fall of Hyperion" we finally learn what happens to each of the pilgrims; not everyone lives happily ever after, but that wouldn't be terribly realistic based on the set up in the first book. The plotting is intricate and primarily takes place through the dreams of the main character in this book, another Keats cybrid. I'm certain others have outlined and dissected the plot for you, so I won't take your time; just be sure to grab this book if you're a fan of Dan Simmons, science fiction/fantasy and/or just all-around terrific books.
An erudite and exceptional conclusion.......2007-03-14
The Fall of Hyperion is Dan Simmons' conclusion to the epic novel Hyperion. This book is a small departure from the "frame story" format used in Hyperion in which each character is treated as a separate story within the framework of a single narrative. The Fall of Hyperion settles into the more standard linear narrative, although it does retain some semblance to the original Canturbury Tales style of the first book.
The group of seven pilgrams has reached the Time Tombs, and they seek a confrontation with the mysterious Shrike, a machine like predator who can seemingly transcend time to kill. Each traveler has their own reasons for coming on this quest, but it is not understood how they all relate to one another.
At the same time the galactic government of the Hegemony is at the brink of all out war with the ousters, a group of humans who struck out into space on their own hundreds of years before and has seemingly evolved. The CEO of the Hegemony government Meina Gladstone finds herself in a very difficult position, facing decisions that could affect the future of the hegemony. CEO gladstone must make these choices in the face of conflict with the military, the senate, and especially the Artificial Intelligence known as the Core.
However the main perspective of the story is told through that of Joseph Severen, a cybrid who was modeled after the poet/author John Keats. Severen seems to hold the key details to a future that could take place resulting in either the destruction or salvation of mankind.
John Keats is of course, the inspiration for both the titles of this series as well as its storyline, and his writings figure even more into The Fall of Hyperion. This novel travels much deeper into philosophical and theological territory than does hyperion. I found the concepts to be extremely interesting and enlightening, however some may find that less interesting than the more character driven Hyperion. Simmons is able to deliver a complex and compelling narrative, while at the same time creating a drawing on high concept physics and scienctific principles. This is what sets him apart from the rest of the crowd of "science fiction" authors.
The pilgrims' stories that filled "Hyperion" were a major reason for its brilliance, and it makes that a tough act to follow. however, it is necessary to this concluding act. The switch in style however, does allow the further development and exploration of the philosophical themes which form the basis of the series. That alone makes this novel a superb conclusion.
The Fall of Hyperion is not quite as engrossing and fulfilling as it's predecessor, but it is a worthy and masterly epilogue.

Customer Reviews:
An eye opening experience.......2007-10-04
I found this book while looking through a bookstore recently and it has changed my life. It's going to replace at least 10 books on my bookshelf. K answers all of the things I've been asking for a long time, without answering them at all. The contents will turn your world upside down if you're open to it.
Why read Krishnamurti?.......2007-05-10
The point of reading Krishnamurti is not to argue whether he is right or wrong or to decide whether you agree or disagree. The point of reading this book is as a stimulus to your own thinking and questioning. The point of this book is to learn to ask better questions, not repeat Krishnamurti's answers. I have read a number of his books and find Freedom from the Known one of his best. Don't accept or reject anything that he says. Just read it, open your mind and grow.
Smacks you in the brain!.......2007-04-17
Underneath everything is what we are. With the help of Krishnamurti and this book (the first of his I've read), you'll find that what we are is nothing. Not a lonely "nothing", but the calm, amazing truth that remains when we "know" that we are only what we think we are...
Ahhhh, yes. This book and Krishnamurti do an amazing job of opening the eyes! Read it and really digest it. It will smack you...
What I ordered........2007-01-10
Gave me what I ordered on time. What else can you expect?
One of Krishnamurti's great books, but less accessible than some others.......2006-12-23
Krishnamurti was certainly a scholar who thought deeply on life and the complications that are inherent to life. He stresses avoiding relying on external authorities and favors inner exploration. In fact, one of his purposes is to encourage freeing yourself of conditioned thinking i.e. the scripts than run us unconsciously. He believes that in "choiceless" or pure awareness we discover our deepest self.
Krishnamurti believes we should be moving in an out of constant inquiry. While he offers no specific method, he attempts to reach truth by negating our unexamined assumptions. He refers to truth as a pathless land and deconstructs a lot of common arguments concerning the nature of life and living. This in itself is useful and leads one to a deeper connection to Being.
This is not one of Krishanmurti's easiest reads. However, if you are a fan of this type of book or Krishamurti in general, you will no doubt enjoy it.

Book Description
Freedom From The Known is the first book to focus entirely on Wolfgang Tillmans's abstract photographs, exploring the presence abstraction has had within his figurative and representational work. It is published on the occasion of the artist's first major solo exhibition for an American museum--curated by Bob Nickas, who contributes an essay here--which opened at P.S.1 in Long Island City, New York, in the spring of 2006. Of the 25 pieces here, 24 were produced specifically for this project and had never been seen before the exhibition. Most of are "cameraless" pictures, made by the direct manipulation of light on paper, rather than on a negative. At the exhibition, each photograph was presented in a frame, which marked a departure for the artist, who pioneered installation with tape and pins. But he was right: Frames gave these elusive, transitory, abstract images coherence as objects in space, as well as both buoyancy and weight. They were accompanied by a group of figurative photographs from the 1990s series Empire, which made the shift from figure to abstraction by being passed through a photocopy or fax machine, then scanned to the highest possible resolution, turned into large-scale C-prints and framed. A selection of earlier photographs provides a context for Tillmans's passage from figurative and representational imagery to abstraction. Taken together, these more conceptual works reveal the self-reflective impulse underpinning choices of media and topic throughout his work.
