Book Description
Olivia Dunne, a studious minister's daughter who dreams of being an archaeologist, never thought that the drama of World War II would affect her quiet life in Denver. An exhilarating flirtation reshapes her life, though, and she finds herself banished to a rural Colorado outpost, married to a man she hardly knows. Overwhelmed by loneliness, Olivia tentatively tries to establish a new life, finding much-needed friendship and solace in two Japanese American sisters who are living at a nearby internment camp. When Olivia unwittingly becomes an accomplice to a crime and is faced with betrayal, she finally confronts her own desires. Beautifully written and filled with memorable characters, Creel's novel is a powerful exploration of the nature of trust and love.
"Highly satisfying." (Susan Vreeland, author of Girl in Hyacinth Blue)

Just Perfect........2007-08-15
I picked this book up on a whim at a bookstore, simply because the cover description hit a chord with me. I am SO happy that I took a chance on this book that was unknown to me, because it is one of the best books I have ever read, and has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf!
The prose is perfectly orchestrated to make you really feel as though you are in the prairie of Colorado in 1944, as though you are walking with Olivia through the farmland and the internment camp, and to help you identify with the loneliness of Olivia. Yet, as grim as the synopsis of this novel sounds, it is entirely uplifting and soul-satisfying. "The Magic of Ordinary Days" runs the reader through a gamut of true human emotions and revelations, and is a story you don't want to miss!

Saw the movie first . . ........2006-12-30
I saw this movie first one night and loved the it! When I found out it was a book I quickly ran out to get it thinking that the book had to be far better than the movie as they tend to be. However, I found the book a bit of a drag. I suppose the movie took on a lot of creative license and really made the movie into an enjoyable product. I am by no means knocking the book. I did enjoy it to some degree, but I suppose it was just a let down as I was expecting a more involved version of the movie.
The book is good, but the movie is better..........2006-12-27
When given a choice between this book, and the Hallmark DVD, hands down, purchase the DVD. To the novel's credit, Ann Howard Creel is beautifully written, captures the loneliness of farm life, and accurately depicts the WWII era. But to feel the emotional impact of the story, purchase the DVD. It keeps the essential components of the story and dialogue, while fleshing out a more compelling love story - and more understandable reason for Livvy to stay with Ray.
I owe this primarily to Skeet Ulrich's sympathetic and finely nuanced performance as Ray Singleton, as well as a script that allows Ray to grow, and not just Livvy. In the DVD, Ray bends, and so does Livvy.
In comparison, Ann Howard Creel's Ray is little more than a cardboard cut-out stereotype of the backwards farmer. Be prepared for disappointment in Creel's Ray. In the novel, NO, Ray never accomodates Livvy's interest in history and archaelogy, and NO, he never talks about anything but the weather and farming, and he expresses NO interest in the baby whatsoever. Instead, Creel focuses on how LIVVY must change, Livvy must adapt, Livvy must give up all her hopes, dreams, friends, family, and desires for this man that frankly, isn't much of a catch. It's a surprisingly chauvanistic view from a female writer, and I'm surprised so many women readers do not see this.
She also dwells far too much on the friendship with Rose and Lorelei (Flori). After a while, I just skipped over these pages. It was too much. Creel should have cut that backstory in half, and dwelled more on Ray and Livvy's relationship.
So - bypass this book. Get the DVD. You'll get a more satisfying experience, and to me, a more real-life, compelling love story.
Authentic.......2006-11-30
I loved this simply told, complex story. I am reminded of Blaise Pascal who apologized for a long letter saying he didn't have time to make it shorter. In this case Creel took the time to polish this jewel of a story. It is effortless to read but jam packed with significance. I loved it even though it is much different from what I normally read. One of the best books I've read lately.
3.5 stars.......2006-06-09
I thought that the secondary plot in this book was a little too much. It seemed to take up about half of the novel. A little more time could have been spent on the relationship between Livvy and Ray. I found Livvy a little to cold towards Ray at times which made me feel as though she didn't deserve him. Not a nice way to feel while reading a romance.
Book Description
Barbara Ardinger teaches us that a contemporary spiritual experience can show up in some of the most unexpected placessuch as The Muppet Show and Dirty Dancing. Clearly Pagan Every Day is not your ordinary goddess-a-day or spell recipe book! Rather than writing about the usual sabbat rituals and offering the standard goddess-speak, Ardinger offers 366 (365 plus one to grow on) literate and witty entries on various topics that provoke readers with new ideas and new ways of exploring paganism as a spiritual practice.
Included are the holy days of other cultures, pagan elements in literature, lessons from history, famous pagans, and popular culture and paganism. Ardinger teaches us to look for undercurrents of esoterica not only in witch movies or fantasy television, but in the mainstream culture. Take February 2reflect on the movie Groundhog Day and how it symbolizes karma and reincarnation. Intertwined are some more traditional pagan beliefs, with a contemporary twist. On August 17, Ardinger retells the familiar story of Odin and his search for runes and transforms it into a shamanic journey for each of us to find our own runes.
Jane Goodall, Judy Chicago, John Donne, Miss Piggy, Harry Potter, the Ghosts of all those Christmases, Mary Magdalene, not to mention Saturn, Diana, Sonnenwenda, Adonis, Aphroditethey all have their places in Pagan Every Day.

Interesting.......2007-10-10
Not exactly what I was looking for as it is more a Book of Days than a devotional. However, for what it was...it was very good.
Pagan Every Day: Finding the Extraordinary in Our Ordinary Lives.......2007-07-18
Pagan Every Day is directed at the "pagan" but as the author explains this word really just refers to any belief system that is Non-Christian. It is not that Christianity is trashed in this book on the contrary the author has been very careful to represent and be lovingly tolerant of all traditions. The entries simply examine history, mythology, and beliefs that tend have more than one God or Goddess or that share insight into the living earth.
Topics are too numerous to mention and I have bookmarks and written notations marking up most of the book. There is a lot of information on Greek, Roman, Sumerian, and Egyptian Deities complete with references showing the evolutions and connections between these different beings amongst different cultures. There are interesting sections describing the practices of different traditions from Buddhism to Wicca. The author describes some locations that I definitely have to visit. She even shares a few spells and some contemplative activities to undertake.
Since I had to do a review of Pagan Every Day, I read this book from start to end. I was overwhelmed with the interesting information, great ideas, and little comments that really made me think. Now that I've completed this review, I can go back and more leisurely reread the entries. This way, I can take in a lot more of the information, do a little more research in some of the areas that really intrigued me when I read them the first time, and take a little more time to contemplate some of the notions presented.
Spit out the Bones.......2007-03-18
This book is good, but the author muddies the waters of pagan teachings with her blatant feminism. I found her diatribes distateful.
Outstanding.......2006-11-29
Barbara's book is a refreshing combination of excellent historical research and good, old-fashioned practical advice about how to appreciate the extraordinary in the mundane. Her sense of humor and light-hearted, but not fluffy, approach to Pagan topics is inspirational without being condescending or disrespectful. She has perfected the art of taking her subject seriously without taking herself too seriously, and invites the reader to do the same. She has done much to reinforce the concept that Pagans occupy all levels of social order and culture, not just as some "fringe" society whose beliefs can be easily dismissed under the general heading of "New Age" hype.
Her book provides a welcome antidote to the staleness we all (Pagan or not) experience at one time or another, be it spiritually or motivationally. In addition, I find it especially helpful in teaching my small daughter the fundamentals of appreciating the natural world and all of the beauty in it, as well as the myriad of mythologies and cultures that exist on our planet. Well-researched and lovingly prepared, "Pagan Every Day" is an excellent addition to anyone's bookshelf!
AWESOME!!.......2006-11-03
Again, Barbara has made our lives relevant and "majikal". I use her book daily as a way to remind myself to focus on the past, use it in the present and have it go forward into our tomorrows. Her wit and thorough research are beyond compare. I only wish I still lived in California so I could hug her neck for all she contributes to the Community.
Book Description
After a murder case threatens her safety, attorney Brooke Benton seeks sanctuary in the quiet Amish community of Maplecreek. Although the locals disagree with her worldly ways, she soon manages to find a place in their lives. But when a tragic hit-and-run accident turns fatal, Brooke cannot abide by the community's belief in absolute forgiveness. She wants answers.
Daniel Brand left his childhood home to explore the outside world years ago. Now he has returned to his Amish roots, and worldly Brooke Benton does not fit into his plans. But when his niece dies, he slowly agrees that they must bring to justice the driver who killed her -- especially when a silent presence continues to threaten the community. Together, Brooke and Daniel begin a journey along a dark road, hoping to bring peace to the small community . . .and maybe lead their hearts home.
Customer Reviews:
Loved this book!!.......2004-06-01
This book had me from the very first page. I had trouble putting it down and read it in 2 days. I thought it was very well written and found the references to the Amish very interesting. I highly recommend this book.
Want an Amish mystery? Try "Plain Truth" instead........2000-06-14
Pretty bad novel about attorney Brooke Benton (yuck!) who flees the big city (she's being stalked by a maniac who's mad she got a killer off) and moves to Amish country. Not long after she's there, a big truck runs into a buggy full of Amish teens and then flees the scene. The teens all die and Brooke takes over the investigation. All the while, she's swooning over Daniel, a studly Amish guy, and crying a lot. Pretty badly written, not that entertaining, and a little bit patronizing about the Amish, but it takes a lot more than that to get me to put down a book once I've started it. Maybe it's a pride thing. I honestly can't explain why I bothered reading past page 35.
A far, far better mystery involving the Amish community is Jodi Picoult's "Plain Truth." Head on over there and buy that one instead!
Good informative entertainment........1998-06-18
Karen Harper seldom disappoints and this book was no exception. The story was interesting and the Amish connection was informative as well. Daniel and Brooke seemed like a "real" couple and Daniel's torment about his "Amishness" was realistically portrayed. I look forward to reading EMPTY CRADLE, which is waiting on my shelf.
Mystery and romance in Amish country!.......1997-07-25
A great story! Mystery, romance and adventure--in a quiet Amish community? Yes! Yes!
A lady lawyer leaves the big city seeking safety from a stalker for herself and her young niece. They come to Maplecreek to operate a friend's quilt shop. The peaceful community is disrupted when four young Amish are killed by a mysterious hit and run driver. The lawyer-in-hiding feels compelled to find the killer of her young friends.
Meanwhile an uneasy relationship is building between the worldly lawyer and a 'plain' man who has returned from life outside to commit himself to the Amish ways.
The author pieces together her story like a fine Amish quilt and keeps the reader guessing until the end. The characters are very well developed and believable and I look forward to reading more from Ms Harper

The unearthing of a T-Rex fossil leads to a much more sinister discovery.......2007-09-11
Almost every boy dreams of being a fossil hunter, to experience the thrill of uncovering the discovery of the century in millennia-old strata. And what child doesn't love going to the museum and ogling the huge dinosaur skeletons on display? The idea that such horrific creatures once ruled the earth is cause for simultaneous wonder and fear. But when ruthless men will stop at nothing to realize these childhood dreams, wonder turns to danger and fear turns to outright terror.
In Tyrannosaur Canyon, the follow-up to 2003's The Codex, Preston utilizes his masterful storytelling skill to explore the relationship between paleontology and the international black market, posing the question of what can happen when science is hijacked for personal gain.
Returning from the first book are Tom Broadbent, now a veterinarian living in the remote Southwest, and his new wife, Sally (Colorado, from The Codex). Tom and Sally run into trouble when Tom plays Good Samaritan, riding to the rescue of a shot and dying prospector, Stem Weathers, in the New Mexico desert. Tom is too late to save the man's life, but Weathers manages to give Tom a mysterious notebook and asks him to find his daughter. Tom agrees to the request and sets out to discover both the man's true identity and the possible reasons for his murder. What he finds shocks him--and places his and Sally's lives in danger.
Before his death, Weathers unearthed something extraordinary, the fossil find of a lifetime, and he marked its location in the notebook. The clues are written in code, and Tom will need help if he's going to track down the discovery and learn its importance. But Tom isn't the only one looking for Weathers's discovery, and the other players in this game are deadly serious. Because it seems there's more at stake than just a dinosaur fossil.
This book is a fun read. As Preston's fans have come to expect, the writing is fast-paced and the excitement level high from start to finish. Although the characters--especially the villains--are a bit two-dimensional and the plot is over-the-top at times with its various twists and turns, the story holds together well enough to keep readers engrossed and engaged. An interesting addition is the character of Wyman Ford, a CIA agent turned monk, who gives the story an undertone of morality, if not exactly traditional Benedictine spirituality. An interview with Douglas Preston at the end of the audio version provides some insight into the author's views on science and religion.
Tyrannosaur Canyon is a book worth reading for those who enjoy adventure stories. There's some violence and language, but overall, objectionable content is kept to a minimum. Readers who have come to expect excellence from the collaborative offerings of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child may be disappointed with this perhaps slightly less delightful solo effort, but for those willing to suspend disbelief for a while, it's worth going along for the ride.
Decent beach read, but keep your expectations moderate.......2007-08-16
TC isn't a bad effort, and the descriptions of NM scenery are great -- reminiscent of the team's better books, _Thunderhead_ and _Mount Dragon_. Here, Preston bites off a bit more than he can chew, introducing a significantly complex plot device that he resolves only half-heartedly and not entirely believably. Other reviewers have it right when they identify the search-for-the-fossil plot as a macguffin: you could easily substitute any lost and/or disputed item (an art treasure, a forgotten city, a missing atomic bomb, etc.) and the other elements of the book could remain essentially the same. A fast and enjoyable vacation read, but heavily formulaic. I can't help but think that Preston does his best work as part of a team.
A Good Light Weight Read.......2007-06-21
A murder in the early pages, a literate hitman, a lightly feathered dinosaur, a life and death chase or two. A thriller novel with some inventive twists. I especially liked the excursions back to life through a T-Rex's eyes; a life of permanent Alzheimer's. If you like a fast paced thriller that provides easy relaxation and a few new insights check this one out.
Tyrannosaur Canyon.......2007-06-12
By Douglas Preston...not his best work but entertaining reading. Didn't hate it, didn't think it was great...just entertaining. The concept was intriguing, just left me wanting a little more. He's great when writing with Child!
MacGuffin Canyon.......2007-05-24
As I got about 70-80 pages into the book, I disappointingly realized that this was a fairly standard "chase" thriller, as another reviewer here termed it. The dinosaur stuff and all the stuff on the cover about the missing moon rock and "the greatest scientific discovery of all time", etc is basically just a macguffin for the characters figure out, look for and fight over (as opposed to being more central/necessary to the plot). Think Dan Brown/DaVinci Code rather than Michael Crichton/Jurassic Park.
That said, it was still an enjoyable read and the dinosaur/geology background stuff is very interesting.

Product Description
At the start of this improbable thriller from bestseller Preston (The Codex), innocent bystander Tom Broadbent is riding his horse through a New Mexico canyon when he comes upon prospector Stem Weathers, who's just been shot. Before Weather dies, he gives Tom a notebook filled with mysterious numbers, asking him to pass it on to his daughter. Taking this assignment to heart, Tom puts himself and his wife at ever greater, more pointless risk as he tries to deliver the notebook. Soon the Broadbents find themselves the target of the prospector's assassina jailbird hired by an evil British paleontologist seeking the perfectly preserved remains of a Tyrannosaurus rexas well as a rogue government operative who's trying, with a commandeered army squad, to kill almost everyone in the book. Lively yet ridiculous, the narrative loses all plausibility as it becomes clear that the characters do what they do solely in order to keep the plot churning to its conclusion. The recent real-life discovery of a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil containing soft tissue makes this particularly timely.

James Earl Jones is the voice you want to hear when you hear the Word of God. I listen to it when I go to sleep and throughout the day. My 11 month old son enjoys it at bedtime. I pray Mr. Jones records the Old Testament as well. A great gift for any believer!!
Is that you Earl?.......2007-06-18
I was a bit disappointed because Jones reads this great book as enthusiastic as criminal would walk to the gallows. I expected to hear his voice boom with enthusiasm as he narrates the bible. Not today!!
A Bessing To Hear!.......2007-04-01
Mr. Jones has a very distinctive voice. To hear God's word read with the soothing music and Mr. Jone's tone, is worth every penny you spend. It is wonderful to be able to hear God's word as I travel to and from work. Because truely in this day and time every spare moment we have, needs to be in the Lord's precious word, this is where we get our foundation to stand strong for Jesus. Great voice, great narration, but............2006-12-31
Mr. Jones has just the right touch, and tone for this beautiful project. I have but one problem with this production. Where is the Old Testament? Otherwise I would have given this production 5 stars.
Awesome reading by James Earl Jones.......2006-11-10
Great for companionship while driving or otherwise, Gives you the word and read by a master. My only issue was I wasn't aware it did not include the Old Testament and there was no indication of this prior to purchase.

This is an excellent way to listen to scripture especially while driving. Fast delivery. Thanks.
James Earl Jones should stick with Darth Vader........2006-01-12
I was excited to get this CD set, since I know James Earl Jones has a great set of pipes, and I have listened so much to Alexander Scourby's reading of the Bible that I was ready for a new reading. I was disappointed the first time I listened. Jones does not use inflection while he reads; the result is that the words sound lifeless. As a Christian believer, that abhors me.
But more than his lifeless reading, I am apalled at Jones' changing of the text. He is reading the King James Version, but he changes the words at will. For example, the text will read "Christ Jesus" and Jones will read "Jesus Christ." I counted 21 errors in his reading of the Book of Ephesians alone. If you believe, as I do, in the divine inspiration of the Word of God, you will not be able to stand how Jones imposes his own changes to the text without any textual or scriptural justification. Jones should stick with Darth Vader.
Disappointing.......2005-12-17
The guy has a voice like no one else, but the original King James version language (all the "unto's" and "ye's" and "thou's"). - lame backround music - and a whispery, momontone reading (if you can imagine James Earl Jones doing that) - makes this far inferior to Johnny Cash's reading of the New Testament.
Johnny Cash proclaims the Word of God beautifully and simply. If you're not much of a believer, it just is done well and straight forward.
The New King James Version in Cash's reading is more modern English (Easier on the ears.) But this is still majestic langauge. Also, no accompanying organ music. Just him reading slowly and with understanding.
If you are going to buy one - get Johnny Cash reading the New Testament.
Fans of James Earl Jones, or Star Wars' Darth Vader, Should Be Pleased!.......2005-10-06
I love this reading of the King James Version's New Testament! I only wish he had done the Old Testament as well! He is still alive, so maybe they will do that someday (hint, hint)?
James Earl Jones has a great, classy voice for this type of reverent material. He makes the sometimes difficult King James Version easier to follow, during his reading.
This James Earl Jones set has some quiet music playing in the background, so that is my biggest criticism. The music is more like MUZAK, which has nothing to do with the Bible scenes being read. Distracting, but it also fades away from notice eventually.
If you know any Star Wars fans, then this is a perfect way to get them introduced to Bible material, since James Earl Jones is the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films.
I love these celebrity readings of the Bible. Another great celebrity Bible reading is Johnny Cash's attempt, so check that out, too! These type of celebrity readings are great for fans of the celebrity, but if you are wanting a great Bible reading on CD, then I would suggest a dramatized version of the New International Version (NIV) from the Zondervan company.
I also really enjoy THE MESSAGE!, a contemporary paraphrase, not a translation of the Bible, which is very engrossing, but sometimes strays too far from the actual scripture verses. All of these Bible CDs are imperfect, but it's fun to hear and get exposed to the differences, as long as they make a serious attempt to be faithful and accurate to the Scriptures.
If you are considering buying this James Earl Jones set, then you probably have enough interest to enjoy owning and listening to this. I love this CD set! Even though it's not perfect, it is still very enjoyable and inspirational. I highly recommend it!
Beautifully soothing..........2004-11-19
Monotone? I loved listening to Mr. Jones' voice, and I would tend to listen all the way through and even understand it better than when I read it myself....and as for mispronouncing words, I have no doubt that there was training and practicing of unfamiliar words ahead of time, so any "mispronunciations" were just a matter of choice by the speaker, his OWN variation of some words which is very often allowable in our English language. I have always found his brand of accent/dialect very appealing, so yes, I was very happy to start listening to these CDs performed by an actor I've always admired. To each his own though, I guess......
