Customer Reviews:
What a waste of hours of my life........2007-06-19
I wanted to like Ryder. I kind of liked him in The Sherbrooke Bride. As I've mentioned in my reviews of the other 2, I bought these all together and for some insane reason felt a compulsion to finish them. I will forever regret that choice. I have a surprisingly good memory and surprisingly good reading comprehension, so unfortunately I remember waaaay too much of Ms. Coulter's books now.
I don't know how much I'd classify the sex here as "rape" (coercion definitely, but there is a difference). There was obvious rape in The Heiress Bride, but the only actual rape I thought occurred in this book was actually perpetrated against Ryder by the prostitute and Sophia and her uncle.
I have more a problem with the fact that Ryder was more upset that Douglas saw Sophia naked than by the fact that his wife had just run scared from the room because of her husband's "love making". Douglas, who claims to have felt the same type of compassion for Sophia as he does for his own wife (which was pretty darn low, so maybe that explains it), just hands her back to Ryder despite the fact that she was in a panic and bloody.
Ryder was not considerate of Sophie on any level. A person who has suffered from physical abuse, manipulation, coercion, etc. is going to be a bit frightened and traumatized. What's the best way to keep her in line? Threaten to beat her, of course! He does that numerous times. He is not compassionate to her in any of their interactions (as people or sexually).
Seems to me that the whole book was about Ryder trying to control her and Sophia trying to fight off her fears of that control after having been abused for so long. I cannot think of one redeeming quality in their "relationship", let alone any indication of why they would "love" each other.
I can honestly and truly say that having read the first 3 books of the "Bride" series, I will never, ever, ever read a Catherine Coulter book again, and I will seriously recommend that none of my friends or even mere acquaintances do, either. We must put a stop to the belief that abusive and manipulative "heroes" are acceptable, and that rape scenes are somehow erotic. THIS is the type of "romance" novel that is a danger for young girls to read. It will give the impression that these interactions are somehow "normal" in any way shape or form.
Sherbrooke Bride outshines this one by a mile........2007-03-30
I loved Sherbrooke Bride. I felt Ryder deserved an equally fascinating heroine and storyline. Instead the characters are flat, one dimensional drones. Sophie, the heroine is useless. The plot was thin and Coulter, obviously struggling for ideas, just fluffed most of the chapters with nonsense. I get the feeling she was in a rush to complete the trilogy and her heart and usual talent did not surface with this piece of writing. YUK. I'm generously giving her two stars because overall I enjoy this author. I couldn't wait for Hellion to end and had to struggle to finish it. Usually her pace is great and her novels are page turners. Disappointing.
The Hellion Bride by Catherine Coulter.......2007-01-13
I have enjoyed reading the Bride series. My only major complaint is that romance novels do not have to be filled with sex to make them good. There is too much in this book and I believe it would have been just as good without it. The characters are so well written that it takes away from the story line. FYI: Lynn Kurland is an author that can write an excellent romance novel without writing the sexual incounters.
Barbaric.................2006-08-22
This is the second disturbing book I have read by Coulter. Her novels seem to be riddled with abuse; both mental and physical.
If you're looking for a fairytale romance or any romance at all skip this book. This book was about an Englishman who goes to the Carribean to investigate ghosts/spirits haunting his brother's property. That storyline flatlines and instead Coulter focuses on this odd, completely disturbed, man-hating young lady that is forced to wed the Englishman for her own protection. That sounds heroic, but trust me it's not.
There is absolutely nothing in this novel that makes you want to keep reading further.
HISTORICAL ROMANCE FANS WILL RELISH THIS.......2006-01-18
Fans of Catherine Coulter's Bride series will be delighted to hear the vixen/innocent Sophia come alive through this accomplished reading by British native Anne Flosnik. Listeners will be more than entertained by her articulate performance as she brings a cast of disparate characters to life.
As many remember, the Bride series began with the Sherbrooke Bride in which we met Douglas Sherbrooke, the Earl of Northcliffe. Tall, dark, and handsome? Of course, as is Ryder Sherbrooke whom we meet in The Hellion Bride. He's a lady killer if there ever was one. A typical love 'em and leave `em type who is used to having the gentler sex melt before him.
Now, gentler sex is not a description one thinks of in regard to Sophia. While she's not yet 20, she's apparently a woman of the world who is used to having her own way. Gossips say that at her tender age she already has three lovers. She lives in Jamaica, home of the Sherbrooke Sugar Plantation. Ryder has come to the Plantation to put an end to rumors of supernatural goings-on.
As it turns out, supernatural forces are nothing compared to Sophia. Will Ryder tame her or will she be the conquering heroine?
Historical romance fans will relish The Hellion Bride, with sex, secrets, and romance aplenty.

Customer Reviews:
Loved it!!.......2007-06-16
I love the historicals by Julie Garwood. She's one of the best.
Rebellious Desire? Hardly!.......2007-05-11
This story was slow, uninspiring, and hardly sensuous, desirous, or entertaining. The characters are lifeless and the story, boring. Don't waste your time. If you want truly wonderful historical fiction novels, go to Judith McNaught. Any of her historical fiction novels are worlds better than this one.
If you've never read Garwood, don't read this one first..............2007-01-27
Because you'll probably be dissappointed and miss all the great historical books (The Bride, The Secret, Ransom etc.) she has written. The hero is this one is not likeable -to say the least! He's arrogant, proud and has major *trust* issues. He is exactly what I would envision an english duke to be -with one problem- He DOESN'T really change his behavior or attitude at all at the end of the book . I think thats why alot of people are turned off by this one. And the heroine, who starts out brave and determined to capture his heart, turns into a wet noodle and just accepts that he will probably never love or trust her. Not exactly what most readers are looking for.
I wouldn't say that I hated the hero for his treatment of the herione because I did understand where he was coming from. But all the arguments between the two got tedious and his highhandedness was at times too much to bear. This is not a caring/lovey-dovey hero that will make you sigh with his love declaration, more like a severely flawed man that realizes what a true treasure his wife is -not that he would admit it and a bit late I might add.
And it wouldn't have been so bad if the heroine hadn't given up on him. I could see how she was sick and tired of his trust issues, but it went against her personality (which Garwood described as strong & courageous) to just accept his treatment of her.
A bit dissapointing as far as Garwood is concerned. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, some rare glimpses of true love like a brief encounter with two secondary characters, but not enough to statisfy this reader.
rebellious desire?...where!? where IS IT!?.......2006-07-30
This novel was intriguing in the beginning but slowly dimmed towards the end. I wished Ms Garwood would have brought up a notch the chemistry between the main characters. BRADFORD JERED MARCUS BENTON is as arrogant as he is STIFF! Caroline is, or at least BECAME, nothing but a WIMP pretending to be brave. Overall, a dissatisfying and predictable story.
SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!
great reads by Ms. Garwood are "Ransom"(the best of all), "heartbreaker," "come the spring," and "mercy"
Good story, minus two stars due to historical inaccuracies..........2006-06-10
Having loved The Bride, I had looked forward to giving another Julie Garwood novel a whirl. I have a few of them lined up, most of which are set in Medieval Scotland, so I decided to give one set in late Georgian England a whirl. Rebellious Desires has an interesting story with two compelling protagonists. It also has some wonderful humor that reminded me of Jude Deveraux. However, the hero's infuriating indecisions and the book's lack of historical accuracy kept me from enjoying this one to the full. The year is 1802. Caroline Richmond is the daughter of an English earl that is raised by her aunt and uncle in Boston after tragedy strikes at a very young age. After several summons by her father, she finally decides to visit him in England. The reunion is a poignant one, for instead of getting an aloof, unloving father, the earl adores his daughter. On her way to meet her father, however, she rescues a man who is accosted by bandits. She helps heal the man who seems more concerned about ruining his boots and cravat than of healing his leg wound. And that is where she meets the victim's friend, Jared Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, a brutish and brooding man who intrigues her. Bradford is equally intrigued with the spirited and witty American, but his arrogance and unyielding constitution keeps him from getting too close -- until a common enemy and Caroline's shady past bring these two wary characters together. There are some twists throughout the novel.
As said earlier, I was quite taken with the plot and thought the protagonists were compelling and sympathetic enough. Caroline is especially likeable. She has a strong and determined personality and takes charge when other women would cower away. Jared sounds gorgeous and his arrogance is kind of a turnon at first, but he becomes annoying during the second half of the novel. I don't like his attempts to break Caroline's spirit. I like this kind of storyline though. The intrigue is always strong and it compels me to continue to read. However, the historical errors in this book pulled me out of the story several times. The most glaring inaccuracy is Caroline and Jared dancing the waltz at the Duke of Ashford's ball. Even though the waltz had been popular in France and Italy since the mid 1700s, it hadn't been introduced in England until 1816, during a ball given in London by the Prince Regent. There is nothing I loathe more than to read a Georgian/early Regency book with characters dancing the waltz, cotillions or quadrilles before they were introduced in England. This inaccuracy is especially frustrating to me because simple research in an encyclopedia would suffice. In 1802, Caroline and Jared would be doing a country dance or the minuet. Perhaps Garwood doesn't know much about the Georgian and Regency periods. In that case, she should stick to writing Medieval or Americana. Then again, I've heard she writes contemporaries now. Anyway, Rebellious Desire would have been a better read had the author consulted a fact checker. But I am not giving up on Garwood. I do like her style and wit and I have some of her books on my TBR pile. I hope the next one will be more like The Bride.
