Customer Reviews:
Too disturbing.......2007-07-19
They advise writers to get their character up in a tree and then throw rocks at her. In this book there are too many rocks for my comfort. I wasn't able to continue beyond the first few chapters, it upset me so.
Ms. Morsi scores again!.......2007-02-02
I have been reading Pamela Morsi's books for years, and she has NEVER written one I didn't like. This one is no exception! The story of a mother and daughter and their conflicts had me stopping every now and then and thinking of my own mother, and how I pulled away from her until I grew up and came to realize that no one ever could love me more than she does. Ms. Morsi moved me to laughter and tears with this one. I can't wait for her next book!
PHENOMENAL!!!.......2006-10-13
I couldn't put this book down!! I finished it in two day and that's with working 8 hours a day! The storyline is fantastic and it shows how people look at things differently. Both mother and daughter had such different points of view, yet were so much alike in other ways. I say HOORAY!! Read this for sure!!!!!
Love is like a box of chocolates...........2006-08-22
There's no one in The Cotton Queen named Jenny, but at times the book does feel a little bit like Forrest Gump. Babs and Laney take turns telling their story, which have powerful moments. At other times it just feels like a checklist. JFK in Dallas? Check. Reagan for president? Check. Oil crash or rise of Microsoft? Check. The main message is that we're a lot like our mothers and we should marry the man our parents pick out for us, even if said man is a 'geek'.
When it works, it's as good as anything Morsi has ever done. You really feel how the generation shaped the woman and how their own personal intolerance for seeing any other view but their own damages them. When it doesn't work, you're just impatient with them both and tired of hitting milestones of the twentieth century.
Like mother, like daughter.......2006-07-10
When Babs Hoffman loses her husband after just a few years of marriage, she resists the idea of remarrying and instead moves herself and her young daughter, Laney, to Dallas. But what happens to her there changes the course of her life forever, and transforms her into an overprotective mother who is scared of the world.
Over the years, Babs struggles to make Laney into the person she thinks she should be. But to her dismay, Laney is just as stubborn as Babs is herself. Typical mother-daughter conflict ensues, but Morsi has such a fresh and engaging writing style that the story is interesting and compelling.
Ultimately, this book follows the lives of Babs, Laney, and Rachel (Laney's daughter) as they grow up, discover themselves, explore the world, and find that sometimes home is indeed the best place. Well-written and fast-paced, this book is hard to put down.

Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression.
Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD.
This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television.
Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts.

The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage.

Rag doll or Ragwitch?
Can you imagine a young girl trapped inside the mind of an evil witch? Can you also imagine a young boy on a quest to rescue his sister? Well that all happens in this exciting fantasy book The Ragwitch.
Paul and his sister Julia stumble upon an old rag doll one day. The doll takes over Julia's mind and kidnaps her to another world. Paul goes after to rescue her. Paul needs to find the four elementals, so he can rescue Julia. Julia is trapped inside the mind of the ragwitch where she meets others who the ragwitch has taken over. Paul gets four items from the elementals, which get turned into a weapon to kill the ragwitch
I really enjoyed this book. It was a real page turner. It had excitement and the plot was amazing, I didn't want to put it down. The chapters end with cliff hangers which made me want to continue to see what happened next. It was also hooked me because I really enjoy Garth Nix's style of writing. He has a way of having you really get to know the characters. When I know how a character is going to react to something it makes me enjoy the book a lot more. He also did a great job of intertwining two stories, so by the end it all worked out. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys fantasy. This was excellent fantasy book because it had strange, weird creatures, and magic, and it took place in a different world. I would also recommend this book because it was very exciting. The author leaves you hanging which keeps you begging for more. The plot was great and it makes you wish the book was longer. If you are a big fantasy fan this is the perfect book for you. It has everything you could ask for and more. This is a great book for anyone eighth grade and up. It is close to four hundred pages long, and it is a moderately difficult read. The Ragwitch excellent book and I would definitely recommend it.
The Ragwitch.......2007-01-08
Paul had always wondered why that sand dune on the beach was red. When his sister, Julia, finds an unusual rag and mysterious doll in the dune, both of their lives will never be the same. The doll happens to have an evil spirit that takes control of Julia's actions. The spirit, known as the Ragwitch, vanishes after walking into a wall of flames. Paul, overwhelmed by what has happened, walks into the flames to try and save his sister. Paul soon finds himself in a place other than Australia. He turns out to be on another world, where people are in constant fear of creatures such as Gwarulch, Meepers, and Agnarling; creatures who do the Ragwitch's evil bidding. When Paul finds out that Julia has become part of the Ragwitch's body, and that she feels what the Ragwitch feels, Paul knows he has to find her, before it's too late. Early in his travels, Paul meets an old man, known to be one of the wise. He tells Paul that the only way to defeat the Ragwitch is to gather the four Elemental items:air, water, fire, and earth. As Paul leaves he notices an older boy traveling in a balloon. The boy, named Quigin, was sent to take Paul to wherever he wanted to go to, and is also able to talk to animals. Meanwhile, Julia is becoming more and more of the Ragwitch, and is losing her thoughts, which are being replaced by the Ragwitch's memories. This changes when Julia finds another person imprisoned in the witch's mind. This spirit named Lyssa brings Julia out of her imprisonment and into one of the witch's memories. As Julia tries to bring the witch down one way, Paul does the same by going on a journey to collect the Elemental items. Throughout the pages, Paul collects the feather of Air, the blood of Water, the coal of Fire, and the vegetable of Earth. As he is pursued, Paul awakens to find himself next to the Patchwork King, who takes the ingredients and makes a spear that can kill the Ragwitch. In the climatic final battle, Paul goes to the Ragwitch, stabs her in the arm, and kills her. The Ragwitch, by Garth Nix, is an exceptional fantasy novel that should be read because of its action, fantasy, and because of its intense suspense.
The Ragwitch, by Garth Nix, had a great amount of action. Throughout the novel, there are frequent battles in which the Ragwitch's army devastates anyone in her path. When Paul and Quigin arrive in the fishing village of Dombreye, Quigin finds that the Gwarulch are close by, with armies of Meepers accompanying them. When the battle for the village does take place, the Gwarulch fight viciously, and easily defeat the town, after Paul and Quigin escape under the sea. The last battle is also important, as many humans are killed.
This novel is also a prime example of a fantasy story. When the Ragwitch escapes to her world, Paul follows her by constructing a pyramid of twigs and walks through flames. In this world, Paul finds himself captured by a race of tree-like creatures known as the May-dancers. After he is released, Paul finds a place where magic and wizards are ceasing to exist. In a world where a kingdom is falling to the Ragwitch, Paul is overwhelmed.
Suspense is also a major factor in The Ragwitch. When Paul is involved in the final battle, he must escape the claim the Fire and Earth elements. However, as he does, the Ragwitch sees him running and orders her minions to pursue and apprehend him. For the next several chapters, Paul and Quigin evade her and collect the elements. However, this does not last forever, as Paul goes to the witch and is threatened that if Paul kills her, he kills Julia as well.
The Ragwitch, written by Garth Nix, is an exceptional fantasy novel mostly because it is an intriguing story about a boy who tries to save his sister against all odds. When Paul fights the witch, he realizes that evil may have the upper hand, but good always comes through. This novel should be read because of its numerous battle scenes, its thrillers, and because of its excellent depiction of an alternate-realty world. I rate this novel 5 stars out of 5.

"Ragwitch" by Garth Nix.......2006-05-17
I absolutely loved the triology of "Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen", so I bought this book with great expectations. And to be honest, my impression after the first few pages was "oh dear.....". The reader is immediately plunged into the story, without any opportunity to undertand the central characters. This is a real shame, as this would have made the story of their growth as human beings even more enchanting. However, I continued, and although not up to the standard of his later works, Nix's lively imagination is portrayed richly in an interesting and unusual storyline. To anyone interested in purchasing this book, I would highly recommend that they do. Not simply because it is a good read, but it is invaluable in showing Nix's growth as an author.
The Ragwitch.......2006-02-24
Garth Nix is an excellent author. His books are well written and Ragwitch is no exception. I liked it so much my daughter has decided to read it.
:(.......2006-02-15
AWW Garth Nix I'm so disappointed :'( truly, I am. Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen were such good books but The Ragwitch was really bland. At frist I thought that it'd be really good, despite my friend saying it was going to be rubbish, and then... I read it. I couln't even finish it. I'm really sorry, I wish I didn't have to be such a kill joy but this book is really bad. I'm not going to be sour and give it a 1 but if you've read Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen then you'll know what I mean. If you havn't read thease books, then do so instead of this one because they are a hundered times better!

Is there such thing as a Western Taoist? Benjamin Hoff says there is, and this Taoist's favorite food is honey. Through brilliant and witty dialogue with the beloved Pooh-bear and his companions, the author of this smash bestseller explains with ease and aplomb that rather than being a distant and mysterious concept, Taoism is as near and practical to us as our morning breakfast bowl. Romp through the enchanting world of Winnie-the-Pooh while soaking up invaluable lessons on simplicity and natural living.
Book Description
One of the world's great Taoist masters isn't Chinese, or a venerable philosopher, but is in fact none other than A. A. Milne's effortlessly calm, still, reflective bear Winnie-the-Pooh. While Eeyore frets and Piglet hesitates and Rabbit calculates and Owl pontificates, Pooh just is. And that's the clue to the secret wisdom of the Taoists.
Customer Reviews:
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
A complete waste of time. I suppose it is a whimsical idea to use Pooh to explain the version of philosophy that you favor. Others might term this exploitative. In fact, there is probably a comic in there somewhere, The Revenge of Pooh, where pragmatic realistic toys with weapons come and kick the stuffing out of wacko writers.
What a great book.......2007-08-27
If you only read two books this year, this and "The Te of Piglet" should be those.
wonderful, insightful book..........2007-08-08
I found this to be a simply delightful read. It was easy to comprehend and get through. Whoever thought that Pooh might one day come back and enlighten me as much as he entertained me as a kid growing up.
Interesting concepts.......2007-08-04
I learned of this book through my truck insurance auto person in Minnesota. He told me of this book and I bought it and thought it had some great insites on life. They were always there but Pooh brings them out in a way that makes me think farther into it. Really good. PSM
Cottelston, Cottelston, Cottelston Pie .......2007-06-29
"What did you think of the book?" "What book?" asked Pooh. "The Tao of Pooh," replied William. "The who of me." "Yeah, that was a chapter. Did you like it?" "How could you not like a book about a bear?" Pooh said proudly. "That was how I felt," William confirmed.
A wonderful little book that not only introduces one to the thoughts of Taoism but also shows you how a clear mind without worry can make your life better. Don't be a Bisy Backson. Pick up this book and sit down and enjoy it. That's the whole point, right?
Customer Reviews:
Very nice combined version of the originals.......2007-01-11
It's the two separate publications combined ... duh. I bought these way back when, so I have the separate harcover editions, but I bought this one as a gift for someone who had never read either. If your main purpose is reading and not collecting this is an inexpensive and simple way to get both in one shot. If you've never read them, well you must. No excuses. Whether you're interested in Taoism or not these books have some great little kernels of wisdom and truth for all beliefs and walks of life.
A little basic........2006-08-15
This is a nice easy introduction to Taoism but I feel the analogy between Tao and Pooh Bear is a little bit of a stretch. Pooh bear is really just an aloof and naive but very cute character for a kids book, yet Taoism is a philospophy/religion that has had thousands of years of evolution and change. Nevertheless its a nice easy going read but for something with a little more guts I still like "Talking Zen" by Allan Watts. The similarities between Zen Buddhism and Taoism seem to be quite mutual by chance or by design and Allan Watts talks at lenghth about Taoism. Benjamin Hoff is a little off in some his assumptions also, stating that Buddhism is all about dispair and suffering and that is why the Buddha has a sour look. Actually that is a very lay view, and the Buddha usually has a smile on his face because he has reached true happiness by understanding the essence of suffering. There is a big difference.
Product Description
Benjamin Hoff presents in his two beloved volumes a way of life that effortlessly combines "Pooh Way" and Wu Wei, A.A. Milne and Lao-Tzu. Using Pooh texts to illustrate the tenets of Taoism, The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet will show you all over again that each day can be an adventure filled with little treasures--if, like Pooh and Piglet, you'll let it. This special One Spirit edition combines both offbeat classics in a portable package for all your trips into the Wood.
