Book Description
Examining the career of the creator of MAD and Little Annie Fanny, in his own words.
The seventh volume in this distinguished series focuses entirely on one of comics' most esteemed and influential creators: artist, writer and editor Harvey Kurtzman, whose complete Comics Journal interviews are collected in this oversized, lavishly illustrated full-color edition.
Every stage of Kurtzman's landmark career is represented, beginning with his entry into comics via superhero stories for Ace from 1943-46 (Mr. Risk, Lash Lightning), World War II-era Army cartoons, early humor work for Timely and Toby Press (Rusty, Pig Tales, Genius, and Hey Look!), his first collaborations with John Severin and Will Elder at Prize Comics Western, and, of course, his groundbreaking period at EC as editor of Two-Fisted Tales, Frontline Combat and MAD. Kurtzman's undeservedly lesser-known post-MAD career at Trump, Humbug, and Help! is also given its due and examined in depth.
Many of the premier cartoonists of the past half-century are represented, including Robert Crumb, Jack Davis, Elder, Russ Heath, Al Jaffee, Arnold Roth, Marie Severin, and Wallace Wood. Yet what makes this volume particularly noteworthy are the obscurities unearthed from Kurtzman's solo freelance careerfrom Children's Digest, Pageant, U.S. Crime, Varsity and Whymost of which haven't been seen since their original publication. All of which illustrate the most informative and compelling interviews with Kurtzman ever published.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed with mis-leading information.......2007-05-07
I bought this book because it comes with a CD which contains some high res images. However due to their policy, I won't be able to use them in my publication--they are not royalty free.
The book says the reader can buy off the images for a minimun cost but when I spoke with the people they said I can't. I'll have to tell them why, when, where in the publication, all these questions...I'm too tired of this game. I gave this book away because I can simply use water color to do my own art which surely comes out better, and I can do it anytime I want, why the hassle?
I would not recommend you to buy this book if you think you can use the CD.
Sorry, not being harsh, just telling the truth.

Book Description
She was the catalyst that helped to turn a rag-tag rebellion into the Rebel Alliance. She provided the impetus for the "Heroes of Yavin" in their attack on the Death Star. And she was the spark that ignited the flames of passion in one of the galaxy's most notorious rogues. "She," of course, is Princess Leia, the leader - and heart - of the Rebellion against Palpatine's galactic Empire. The four stories in this volume follow Leia from the weeks just before the events in A New Hope, to the time just before The Empire Strikes Back - from her first transforming experience with armed rebellion, to facing the ramifications of consequences of the destruction of her home planet, to the beginnings of true love.

Many sides of a complex character.......2005-05-29
Collecting issues #5-6, 20-22, and the Valentines special of the Stars Wars: Empire series, this graphic novel focuses on one of the most complex and interesting characters in the Star Wars universe: Princess Leia.
"Princess... Warrior" shows Leia in the days just before Star Wars: A New Hope. Still a Senator, moving through the galaxy in her Blockade Runner, she's trying to bring aid to the fledgling Rebellion. Unfortunately for them and her, she's drawn too much attention. When faced with her first tastes of battle, Leia finds her values, character, and strength tested severely. This story also features Captain Antilles as a major character, a treat for die-hard fans.
" A Little Piece of Home" takes place shortly after Star Wars: A New Hope. Leia's former boyfriend and his brother managed to escape the destruction of Alderaan because they were vacationing on a moon they owned. That moon would make an ideal Rebel base. But as she rekindles her feelings for Raal they find themselves in impossible circumstances, struggling for their lives. But that struggle is just as hard as Leia wining the respect of Raal's older brother, Heeth. Heeth and Raal are some of Leia's last connections to her home planet, will she loose them, too?
" Alone Together" is 3 months after the Star Wars: A New Hope, and the fleet is adrift. Han, Chewie, Leia, and Deena Shan, a newcomer to the Rebellion. Deena is nursing a huge crush on Han Solo, but that's placed by the wayside when the four must answer a distress call on a distant planet. Easily my favorite story of the four, it's a funny, quick, entertaining lead.
" A Valentines Story" takes place just before Empire Strikes Back. Leia, Han and Chewbacca are piloting two spacecraft to the new base at Hoth. Han and Leia are in one craft, Chewbacca in another. Caught in a storm as they try to land, they all crash, but after Han and Leia attempt to rescue Chewbacca they struggle together to survive. They also bond together in their own way. A touching and sweet tale in many ways.
This graphic novel shows many aspects of Leia, and shows her growing up, as well as filling in some of the gaps between movies. Highly recommended for Star Wars fans or anyone interested in reading about a strong female lead character.
Book Description
Spring 1070: William the Conqueror has been King of England for three years, but his reign has not been a peaceful one. Rebellion has followed bloody rebellion as the Saxon people have risen up against the tyranny of their Norman oppressors. With ruthless efficiency the Conqueror has crushed each one with shocking brutality. All seems lost, but in the fens of East Anglia, a charismatic Saxon, a nobleman dispossessed of his lands, lights the flame of rebellion one last time and calls upon the people to fight for their freedom. His name is Hereward the Wake, and soon he is joined in bloody conflict with the Conqueror as the two men fight for supremacy of the land.
Into this cauldron comes the last of Harold's housecarls, Ranulf Redbeard and his family, determined to join the Wake in his fight for freedom. Their journey to the fens has not been easy and now Ranulf encounters his most deadly foe: a sadistic knife fighter who will stop at nothing to achieve his soaring ambitions...
Customer Reviews:
COLD HEART, CRUEL HAND - William the Conqueror & Hereward the Wake Come to Life!.......2007-02-23
This is the story of Hereward the Wake, the last leader of the resistance against William the Conqueror. He has been stripped of his rightful lands and title by the Bastard. He continues to fight against him and seems to constantly outwit the Normans on his island of Ely in the Fens of East Anglia. He has plenty of help especially when Earl Mortar and Ranulf Redbeard join his cause.
There are many subplots going on behind the scenes and it makes the storyline that much more intriguing. There were many typos, including grammatical, spelling, editing errors but withstanding those the novel was very riveting. I would suggest if this author does any more writing he find better proofreaders & editors, etc.
While this story is based on fact it is historical "fiction." I too noticed the errors of Odo, the Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent, and Robert of Mortain being described as King William's "cousins" while they were in fact his half-brothers. I'm not sure if the author did this deliberately or not.
However, it is still very much a worthwhile read and a genuine page-turner. I recommend it to anyone interested in this time period. Two other excellent novels of Hereward the Wake are "An Endless Exile" by Mary Lancaster & "Green Saxon Darkness" by Pamela Cottrel.
Hereward deserves better.......2007-01-19
"Cold Hands, Cruel Heart" could have been a good book. With some decent editing, it might even have been excellent, particularly if you like lots of action and intrigue. Unfortunately, the book has two main problesm. One is that Laurence Brown writes like an American high school junior in an English class where the instructor doesn't know how to write, either. He uses capitals for nouns like they do in modern German or eighteenth-century English. And he doesn't seem to know when to italicize and when to use just plain print. Worse, he seems not to have done adequate research; he has a number of glaring factual errors in his book. For instance, Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent, and Robert of Mortain are described as King William's *cousins*. In fact, they were his half-brothers. There is absolutely no question about this. Hereward, the focus of the story, is described as tall and movie-star handsome. Well, maybe, but that's not the way the relevant "stories of his life" describe him. But perhaps that's another story, since very little is actually known about this famous, but basically enigmatic figure. I, personally, would like to see more good fiction about this fascinating period, and some of its equally fascinating characters. Unfortunately, *Cold heart, Cruel Hand* is not one of them.
Inexscusable errors but still well written.......2006-06-19
The story is worth the price tag. But, there are irritating typos and the occasional grammatical error. These go beyond awkward. As I started the book I feared that it would prove unbearable. But, the story is enthralling enough to push aside the rough patches. Although no published book should be so littered with typos, the storyline and descriptions mellow the irritation. Overall, it is a very well written book. Brown tells a quick but illustrative story well worth reading. The problems are not a sign of poor craftmanship on Brown's part but just the result of bad proofing.
One of the best books ever!.......2004-10-22
I was delighted with Mr. Brown's first book, Housecarle. I eagerly ordered this second book and if I could give it 50 stars I would. I dare say it is even better than the first - which was marvelous itself! Mr. Brown picks up the story of Ranulf, the only surviving Housecarle from King Harold's last stand in 1066, as he and his wife and young son struggle against the terrible Norman slaughter in York. Against all odds, they survive and chance brings them to the camp of Hereward the Wake. Hereward was once a nobleman himself, but displaced when William the Conqueror awarded his lands to a Norman lord and killed his only brother. Hereward had been away fighting a forgein war and did not return in time to fight in 1066. He does however put up a resistance that is inspiring, thrilling and makes a story you won't want to put down! Ranulf's personal struggle against survivor's guilt and his single-minded desire to protect his young family are equally thrilling and inspiring. Mr. Brown has created characters on the Norman side that are both vividly terrifying - the kind you love to hate, and also honorable - the kind you'd love to have known. Without giving away the story - which simply pulls you enthusiastically from page to page, I will say that Mr. Brown has taken a period of English history and masterfully captured the political, military and personal struggles that must certainly have happened much as he has imagined. I reached the last page and could have started it over again immediately. I am not ready to be finished with these characters and I desperately hope that the story has not yet come to an end. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!! You will be thrilled that you did!
LJB has done it again.............2004-10-11
I was so pleased that my friend recommended LJ Brown's first book "Housecarl" to me, as it really opened my eyes to historical novels. These were not the type of books I thought I would enjoy. Boy was I wrong.
LJB's first novel was so descriptive in content and so thought provoking, it left me hungry for more. I have since become a big fan of these types of books and have constantly looked out for more work by LJB. Well, the wait is finally over, Cold Heart, Cruel Hand is on the shelves, and doesn't dissapoint.
Ranulf, with his wife and son, have joined up with Hereward the Wake on a small island in the Fens. This small army of Saxons is the last pocket of resistence against William the Conquerer, the last hope against norman rule. Friends of Ranulfs that were present in Housecarl, once again join forces to aide this small army. The odds are stacked heavily against them, but every man has their own reasons for loathing King William, and all are willing to fight for their freedom from Norman rule, or pay the ultimate price trying.
Equally, King William needs to destroy Hereward the Wake and his small army of Saxons, and thus prove his ultimate power over England. If it were just a matter of strength, then William could crush this army like a bug, but first he must find a way to get to the enemy. Not an easy task, as the Conquerer finds out at a great cost.
The battle scenes are once again written with such detail that you feel as if you are there witnessing the events as they happen. The book is full of twists and turns that find you holding your breath in places, anticipating how things will end, and finding another turn that takes you in another direction. There are evil foes that Ranulf has to endure, and freinds in unexpected quarters.
This book has been worth the wait, and I am indebted to LJB for whetting my appetite for historical novels.
His write up says he is a lawyer. If he is as good a lawyer as he is a writer, then he is for sure a force to be reckoned with. If he is not as good a lawyer as he is a writer, then he should take up writing full time, we would then not be left waiting two years between books. Roll on book 3 or at least the movie of the first 2 books to keep us going in the meantime. Two thumbs up...
Book Description
This book provides a compelling and vivid account of British involvement in the Spanish Civil War, examining the experience of the British volunteers in the International Brigades, and placing them in a broad intellectual, political, social, and cultural framework. Incorporating some familiar and many new voices of a turbulent decade, it analyzes the manner in which British men and women conceptualized their engagement with the political issues of their time—whether they were Oxbridge aesthetes or militants from the factories, the mines, and the ranks of the unemployed.
The event that galvanized the volunteers and the many thousands who supported them in Great Britain was the rising of General Franco and his allies against the democratically elected Second Spanish Republic on July 17, 1936. As a counterpart to German and Italian intervention on behalf of the insurgents, the Soviet Union instructed the Comintern to recruit and organize an international volunteer army to come to the aid of the Republic.
The International Brigades quickly achieved mythical status as the century’s most conspicuous example of dedicated idealism, serving the cause of democracy in peril. The early “spontaneous” fighters and, later, the British Battalion in the XVth International Brigade, which included some 2,000 volunteers, fought in every major campaign of the war; about 85 percent of the Battalion’s members were killed or wounded. The author is the first scholar to make systematic use of the recently opened archive of the International Brigades in Moscow, enabling him to take the measure of the nobility and tragedy of the British sacrifice in Spain. His study confirms popular mythology about the International Brigades in certain respects and sharply disputes it in others.
Above all, Into the Heart of the Fire establishes the fact that the British volunteers were not social or neurotic misfits. Rather, they reflected in a distinctive way the political concerns of many of their generation.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive work on the Spanish Civil War.......1999-08-30
Dr. James K. Hopkins, History Professor at Southern Methodist University took several years and thousands of miles in travel in the creation of this masterpiece. The book paints experiences of a number of the 2,000 volunteers from England that fought so bravely against General Franco. Dr. Hopkins discusses a new educated working class, Hitler and Stalin's involvement and their respective involvement in the Spanish Civil War. July 1936 saw the beginning of the end of a new and democratic way of life in Spain. The new government attempted to control the Catholic Church, the distribution of land and the gross inequity between the rich and poor. Dr. Hopkins illustrates the conviction and courage of the XVth Brigade. He interviewed Spanish Veterans in England. Dr. Hopkins blends his extensive knowledge of the Spanish Civil War and first hand experiences in Central America. Anyone interested in the real conflict in Europe before WW II, will enjoy "Into The Heart of the Fire".

Raunchy - and that's being polite........2007-05-18
I wish I had read the reviews before I purchased this book. I bought it as a gift for an associate that was moving to Rome. Unfortunately, this book goes way beyond slang - it's simply vulgar. Most of what is in the book wouldn't be allowed on the Amazon website.
Give this a pass!
Funny.......2007-02-16
More X - rated then I thought.
Great for laughs from those who really know italian.
Wonder about those who don;t :-)
Enough for its purposes.......2006-11-05
It is a good way to undestand the italian daily, in a rough way. Differently from the romantic and ideal side...the other way to understand how italians are in their daily and how they may behave under non-normal situation. This spontaneity is more likely the daily than the "il libro è sopra la tàvola", which is tought in school.
An amusing look at Italian slang.......2006-06-15
A woman that is passionately in love with Italy and all things Italian writes this review. This is one of those books that is not necessary but is very entertaining. My darling husband bought this many years ago. However, I have been much more amused with the book than he ever was.
The book is subdivided as follows (I have intentionally omitted the titles of the subsections since they are very colorful, which is putting it mildly):
1. Basics and Naughty Nuances
2. The Four Essentials
3. Let's be Creative
4. Love and Libido
5. Versatile Suffixes
6. Anger in Public Places
7. Let's Keep it Clean
8. For Ladies Only
9. Sexual Odds and Ends
10. The End (a test)
The book covers many different arenas where profanity is useful. Ever wondered how to say "hooker" or that "someone is well endowed" in Italian? These are the sorts of things that are covered in this book. There is even an Italian equivalent of "road hard and put away wet", go figure. I think the most creative insult I saw in this book was "you are a hooker without clients." That one really just made me giggle. Not that I can imagine a situation where I would use that phrase. Another excellent one is "the flesh of an older hooker is more tender than this steak". Only in Italy can they come up with phrases like these. The book also uses many of these words in sentences, for the overachievers in the group.
Not everything in this book is rude; some of it is actually useful. They give the Italian for the following phrases that are fit for public consumption:
I want you! ********************** Ti amo!
I need you! ********************** Ti voglio!
I am crazy about you! ************** Sono pazzo per te!
You are the only one! ************** Sei l'unico!
Without you everything will end! ****** Senza di te tutto finira!
If you are looking for a book that has Italian phrases and is entertaining this is the book for you. It won't teach you how to communicate with many people in Italy, but it certainly is enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Now all I need is a good looking red blooded Italian male to practice my new skills with. On second thought never mind, my husband probably wouldn't approve.
Bastante Bene- just good enough.......2006-06-03
I am an Italian-American who discovered this book on the bookshelf of one of my older cousins. It is very amusing; you will finally learn what to say to obnoxious taxi drivers! "Merda" will also teach you some exceedingly crude phrases to use in the throes of passion (although I'm not sure that you should tell your ladylove that she has "the body of a goddess"; she may become alarmed).
"Merda" contains some very common universal and regional profanities. Anywhere you go in Italy, they will probably understand what you are saying to them. (No, I am not telling you to go around calling total strangers vulgar names, but at least you'll know what to say if you get a bad waiter.) My family vouches for this; with a Southern Italian grandpa, a Northern Nonna, and a Central mom all living in the same house, one gets exposed to some very colorful language.
"Merda" is not a terrible book, but it has its fair share of errors. There are numerous article and noun disagreements (there are 6 ways to say "the" in Italian, and this book managed to confuse these articles at least 8 times). The book is not very sturdy at all and I am surprised at the high price. In short, "Merda!" is good for a laugh and to learn some rudimental curses. My advice: borrow it from your older cousin.
