Make an appointment for intrigue at Reyn Marten Sawyer's
hair salon! Outrageous, flirtatious, and as colorful as a magenta mohawk, Reyn tracks twisted crimes, untangles tight knots,
and never, ever leaves loose ends.
Someone clearly meant business when they targeted San Antonio's hair salon king, Ricardo, who was fatally stabbed with a one-of-a-kind weapon: a sharp plastic hair pick. Reyn had loaned Ricardo the tool -- and now she's not only mourning her friend and mentor's murder: she's also a suspect. And in the eyes of sexy detective Jackson Scythe, she's one alluring stylist who should drop her insistent sleuthing like a hot roller. But Reyn's wound a little too tight to stay out of the thick of things, including teasing and taming the stubbornly single Scythe while taking short cuts to catch a killer -- and uncovering the past of a dead man, whose secrets will make Reyn's hair curl....

The Brush-Off: A Hair-raising Mystery.......2007-05-19
After reading poor reviews, I decided to read it anyway. Boy, am I glad I did! I love this series and can't wait for the next one!
More, More, More!.......2006-03-22
The Brush-Off and Sprayed Stiff, the second of the Hair-raising mysteries, are screamingly funny. "Cozies" are becoming increasingly popular, but they come in all shapes and sizes. Some are serious, these are definitely not.
Having an amateur sleuth who is a hairstylist works really well for Bradley for a number of reasons: hair stylists interact with people from all walks of life, the "salon culture" is a fun world to draw, and stylists have a fair amount of flexibility as they can often work in other people's homes or on unusual schedules. I am really hoping that Bradley writes more about these engaging characters and their unusual exploits.
Lots of people I see are comparing these to Evanovich...some negatively. While I do love Stephanie Plum, I think it's harsh to say that anyone who's writing humorous amateur sleuth fiction is imitating Evanovich. Reyn is very, very different from Stephanie Plum and deserves to be evaluated on her own instead of in comparison.
Entertaining, but Formulaic.......2005-07-22
Today's crop of mystery writers seem to be trying to emulate Janet Evanovich. Thus far, only one of the authors I read has come close (Donna Andrews). The formula is pretty basic: a protagonist who has one quirky best friend, another who's gay/lesbian/transsexual, and a smart/hunky cop or dumb/fat cop who may or may not suspect the protagonist of a crime. These protagonists generally have ordinary lives until they're compelled to investigate a murder. While the formula works in many cases, it *is* becoming tiresome. This novel, first in a series, forces the humor a bit but is otherwise an entertaining read. Besides, I must be tolerant of the formula because I seem to keep reading it! Enjoy!
Cute.......2005-04-30
This book was cute. It won't win any literary awards, but is was entertaining in a Janet Evanovich kind of way. I would compare the main character Reyn Marten Sawyer with Stephanie Plum, although I think Reyn is a little smarter and not as inept. She's also not as funny, either. One note: this was my first time reading an e-book, and there were many grammatical and spelling errors. If your interested in reading this book, I would suggest the paperpack edition.
Very Funny!.......2005-04-11
I enjoyed this light and funny read. I have now ordered all her books.

Miki is living every woman's fantasy -- stranded on a desert island with a rugged navy SEAL. But little does Miki know she's a suspect in an international high-tech robbery, and her steely-eyed companion is ready, willing and able to do anything to make her talk.
Navy SEAL Max Preston doesn't buy one word of his gorgeous captive's rambling story as he carries her up the beach. Yeah, she's got curves in all the right places, but Max has a nose for a con -- and there's no way he'll let his iron control waver.
Now a hurricane's headed their way, and for Max and Miki time is running out fast. Can they team up as friendly forces -- and use Max's amazing canine companion to escape before a deadly villain takes his twisted revenge?

Entertaining.......2007-07-31
The kinds of stories that I love are ones that involve a strong, intelligent, very real woman. And I found that Miki fit the bill. She's a little uncertain, she's fierce, smart and she's just one of those good, spirited women who despite difficult obstacles rises to the occassion. I also enjoyed Max, who's intense, secretive, and cynical. He's a challenge, and I love challenges! Truman (I'm a sucker for dogs, labs especially!) was a wonderful addition to the story. The element of suspense combined with the action made the book a fairly well-paced read.
Given the amount of things going on in the story, the book (despite it's rather thick size) lacks depth. I would have liked there to have been a stronger emphasis on Miki and Max's development and relationship. At the end, when they declared their feelings, it seemed a bit, well, shallow. I think that's because the development and deepening of the relationship/bond didn't come through as clearly amidst all that was going on. It was really a letdown. It didn't feel complete or satisfying. I heard from a friend that "Baby" ended much the same way...and given what cursory attention was given about Wolfe and Kit in "Blondie"....I'm not completely hopeful that the next book will be much different.
Still, because of the lack of happy endings, I'm determined to read the next one and all the ones related to it in the hopes of getting a happy, satisfying ending...but for me, this book wasn't so great that I now want to read every book the author has written.
exciting read.......2006-11-03
This book the last in a series by Christina Skye, left you wanting more. Full of excitement, mystery and intrigue
FAR FETCHED AND FUN!.......2006-07-15
We have a book pool at the office and I took this home for a lark. What a fun book. Nothing too heavy. It was corny and wouldnt we all love to have a guy as "enhanced" as Max. Miki was cute and perky but it was Truman the wonder Lab that stole my heart. I love Labs.
It was a very imaginative storyline. Wonder if our government is truly working on all the military enhancements. Now, I am in a quandry about Cruz. He's hateful right now but how did he get that way? and I think Ms. Skye left a doubt open for her next installment. I think, for now, I will look thru our office treasures for the 'Baby' installment. Sensuality is an 8.
Way out wacky lust festival.......2006-07-14
Miki, a free-spirited landscape photographer, having lived the life of irresponsibility, decides to buckle down and do some real work, when a twist of fate sends her plane crashing into the ocean. Her rescuer, Max Preston, is a bio-engineered super-soldier (and a hunk).
The romantic conflict comes from the fact that Max doesn't trust Miki and won't tell anything about what he's doing there. He basically makes her his prisoner, and she keeps trying to escape. Complete with superheroes, super-villains, a super-dog with powers like the lady of Avalon, and light-hearted energetic sex, the story would seem to have definite potential to entertain its readers.
Yet while I generally like an escape from reality, some things were rather too far-fetched, as the narrator tried to chalk one magical ability after another to super-secret scientific advancements. The romance was on the far side of unbelievable, and very shallow, happening as it did between two shallow and stereotypical characters.
At least the book managed to be entertaining at times, but I personally couldn't relate to either of the romantic leads. If this is the sort of story you like however, I recommend you look at Deidre Knight's book "Parallel Attraction" - similar characters, but much more satisfying.
Highly recommended!.......2006-07-04
Miki Fortune has finally grown up and is ready to devote herself to a career in photography a passion since childhood. Although rather clumsy she is extremely independent and very stubborn. This ball of fire is not the kind of woman to just sit back and be pushed around at the hands of someone as senseless and tasteless as Vance Merchant. As driven as she is to succeed at her current beach calendar assignment she remains smart and tough enough to not allow herself to be blackmailed by this greedy, weasel of a man. But no matter how many wrong ways this man rubs her she still does not wish him any harm as the old Cessna he rented takes a turn for the worst and they plummet helplessly to sea. Luckily for Miki, Max Preston, one hot Navy Seal and his wonder dog partner Truman happen to be involved in a secret government project that lead them to the same mysterious island. The highly skilled duo must locate and detain Cruz, a top Navy Seal leader gone bad with killer intentions. Or is that just what Max and his team are led to believe while the government covers up what they have really been up to? And talk about traitors...is Dutch the Cessna's pilot really injured and just another innocent victim stranded on the island or is he only playing possum until he gets a chance to jump the gun and betray Miki? Find out for yourself whether or not the relationship between Max and Miki turns hot and steamy or if they remain hostile and untrusting. Will the unwelcome feelings of desire he is overwhelmed with cloud his judgement therefore risking the whole operation and putting all their lives at jeopardy or does he manage to pull through and save the day with the help of Truman and his extraordinary human qualities? It was a very cute touch when one of the authors characters kept referring to another as "honey" however simultaneous characters used the same line throughout the story when they should have developed their own personal traits. Other than this it was action packed and captivated my complete attention up to the very end and still definitely worth reading! I look forward to reading more of Christina Skye's adventures and give this book two thumbs up!

ENTANGLED STRANDS OF PAST AND PRESENT ENDANGER THE FUTURE
A wake of destruction and loss threatens the U.S.S. Voyager ™ as Chakotay assumes command. Grief over Janeway's impending death coupled with anxiety brought on by the disappearance of Paris, Kim, and the Doctor forces the crew to take increasingly dangerous actions in order to assure their own survival.
But Voyager doesn't fight alone: behind the lines, powerful forces have allied to give the starship aid. Toward this end, a familiar nemesis -- the cosmic meddler Q -- sends Paris and Kim on a perilous journey. Elsewhere, the Doctor, trapped in a dimension alien to human understanding, reunites with an old friend to help secure the fates of those he's left behind.
Yet the conflict raging in the Monorhan system is merely a surface manifestation of more serious turmoil; the true struggle is rooted in the universe's very foundation. Standing at the eye of this maelstrom is Voyager, whose crew may hold the fate of all.
Book Description
The spiritual life is not a life then and there, but a life here and now. It is a life in which the spirit of God is revealed in the ordinary encounters of everyday. In this book of meditations, Henri Nouwen shows in a personal and insightful way that God is much closer to us than we ordinarily realize.
Customer Reviews:
Ready to die...??.......2007-04-03
This short book provides an account of the author's near-death experience after injuries suffered in an accident. It was very interesting to read the progress of his emotional and spiritual condition - increasing closeness to God as he moved toward death. Later, when his physical condition turned around and he began to recover, he didn't feel any relief or thankfulness. Rather, he went into a state of grief and despair at being denied final union with God. Reading this account led me to think about how I would react in a similar situation. I'm not sure I would react in the same way at all... But death is something that comes to each of us in the end... Our days are numbered, but the number is uncertain. Perhaps we should strive toward being better prepared.
Did I miss something?.......2006-02-22
While this was an easy read and well written book, I felt like Nouwen kept repeating himself throughout. I don't doubt his experience and am happy for him that he found such peace and definition for his service in life. But as for myself, it did nothing to further my spirituality or make me feel comfortable or peaceful about death. This came highly recommended and I wound up speed-reading through the last third of the book to get through it.
A "Jewel" of spiritual books..........2005-10-17
I've had this book for a while and always go back to it. I've recommended it to many friends as I am always glad that it was recommended to me. Well worth the read, guaranteed!
Be Still and Know that I AM.......2003-11-25
Henri Nouwen examines his life after a near death accident in which he encounters the Living God.
Facing the possibililty of dying he is able to let go and let God's unconditional love come to him and accept himself as God sees him.
His recovery from the accident brings about many changes in his attitude towards his family, friends, acquaintances and yes even his enemies. The experience brought resolve and forgiveness for his sins and the sins of others.
To come back to the living and take his daily cross was very difficult, since he had already prepared himself for the next life with Christ. To return to the former routine seemed impossible at that time but before long he had gone back to his former ways and was constantly trying to keep the peace that he had found during his illness.
Another book that touches on going to the mountain top and coming back would be "Hind's Feet on High Places" Hinds' Feet on High Places an allegory by Hannah Hurnard.
Preparing for Home.......2002-12-31
This book is different from many of Nouwen's other writings in that he presents lessons learned and spiritual reflections from a very specific event in his life (an almost fatal accident). As he often does, Nouwen delves deep into his own mind and shares his fears and deepest thoughts as he faced death. His thoughts on forgiveness "in the very end" for others and by others, caused me to give great consideration to how I daily forgive. If you fear death or are not "ready" for it, this book provides comforting thoughts for preparing for our real home.

A big little book about the only time that matters... now.......2006-07-12
I'm very happy to have encountered this little book... its size is conversely related to the wisdom of its content.
It has openned my eyes to a "new" reality and little by little is opening my heart to the present moment and nothing else.
The quotes or stories come from very different backgrounds and authors, all pointing to the same direction (or no direction at all) No matter what you believe or don't believe please allow your heart to enjoy the wisdom that you will find in this book, or more accurately, in you own heart.
Gentle reminders when faced with uncertainty.......2005-12-26
My husband bought this for me for Christmas. We're faced with giving birth in February to a child who will require several open heart surgeries. I've been struggling with the anticipation and fear - mostly of the unknown. It's made the days hard to get through.
I've picked up this book no less than 10 times in the few hours since he's given it to me, and each page contains a small wisdom that reminds me to focus on where I am at this moment - even if it means embracing the anger and the fear. Each page is a gentle reminder that the moment is where we are; to dwell in the unknown is to miss living fully in the now. All the rest, everything before and beyond the now, is out of our control - and this book makes that concept a little less frightening.
Highly recommended.
365 Nirvana Here and Now:Living Every Moment in Enlightenment.......2005-07-30
Very inspiriting. Great read daily to give a person focus.
Not just a compendium, a companion.......2005-05-06
I love Josh Baran's 365 Nirvana Here and Now. The first time through, I read it linearly. Now I pick it up when I desire a dose of truth, a moment of contemplation. Each of the short selections is rich in an of itself. Additional golden nuggets from Baran provide a deepening of experience, a context that reaches across traditions. A comprehensive, thoughtful and lovely book.
eternally gratifying.......2005-03-31
I decided to dog-ear special selections in this book. There are a lot of dog-eared pages! It is eternally gratifying because one inquires further into various authors and masters quoted (they are listed in the bibliography) and the journey continues-or just stop journeying, stop doing and enjoy just being as suggested on every page. Wow, Josh Baran did all the years of research and all I have to do is open the book.

Someday we will return to a place of unfathomable beauty, where we live amongst all the beings we have ever loved, promises George Anderson author of Walking in the Garden of Souls. "It is a place we will see again only after our lifetime of struggle, hardship and hurt has earned us the reward of true and final peace." Our task is not to simply muddle through, waiting for our ticket to Eden, cautions Anderson. Rather, we must set out to create "a Garden on earth while we are here," meaning we must cultivate the same life we yearn for in the hereafter. As he did with Lessons from the Light, Anderson conveys messages from the departed to help us tend our garden. The advice ranges from how to plant hope in times of despair to how to water the seeds of compassion (it may start with placing money in a panhandler's palm). Sometimes the garden metaphor seems forced or clichéd. But overall, this is a book with honorable intentions, helping us understand the purpose of life on Earth. --Gail Hudson

These souls are ready to help us deal with issues of sorrow, anger, and fear in a new way, and to nourish our own souls with love.

George Anderson is The REAL deal!.......2007-09-27
I met George Anderson, shortly following the death of my son. I flew to Long Island, NY for a chance to 'hear' from my son. I write about the encounter in Blessings in the Mire, which is here in Amazon. If you want an insider's view, get the book. There is no way he (George Anderson) could have known anything about me, or about my circumstances, or about the death of my son, my brother, and my father (they all came through to greet me in Long Island!). The process was captivating, and even had my dead relatives not come across, it still would have been an experience of a lifetime. As it was, the meeting was priceless, profound, and deeply healing. If you want to know more about my experience please check out Blessings in the Mire, as well as Walking in the Garden of Souls.
As an added thought, for my trip to Long Island, I traveled with a customer who had just lost her husband. She too, received VERY PERSONAL information. She too, was impressed by the communication. Her story is also in Blessings in the Mire.
Believe it, because it's true.
Walking in the Garden of Souls.......2007-08-06
Have purchased several copies to give to people experiencing grief. It has always been helpful and in fact they have all passed it on to others.
An incredibly wonderful book!!
Just A Wonderful Book.......2007-07-22
I've had to purchase several copies of this book because everyone that I loan it to just loves it! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Seriously, how many books have you read (excluding the Bible) that really make you feel good inside. There is so much mental pain on this planet and this wonderful book just makes it a little more tolerable.
A good friend just had to have his dog put to "sleep", so tomorrow I'll be sending the part of the book (under the questions area in the back) about how our beloved pets will be reunited with us when we pass into spirit.
A must read!.......2007-05-11
This amazing book by George Anderson is a must read for everyone. It is not just a book about leaving this world, but a book about living in this world. We all live and we will all leave at one point and this book is instrumental in making both of those experiences the most rewarding event possible. I highly recommend this book.
Walking in the Garden of Souls.......2007-03-08
The book is very insightful and I've read all of the books that George Anderson has written with his coauthors.
I recommend this book for anyone who needs comfort after suffering a loss of someone close. This book helps ease the pain by helping us understand that death is not the end.

God Speaks Here and Now - Book Review by Chari Albino
It is no mistake that this book comes to us now; at this time, in this place. God Speaks Here and now, is a unique and wonderful conversation with the Source of all Knowing. It is poetic, instructive, and certainly one of the most beautiful books you may ever read.
Written for the seeker of truth, this book speaks to all those who have been yearning for more, to those who have been yearning for God. On every page one finds a pure outpouring of love, an experience of bliss and joy.
Many topics are covered in its pages. Just some of them include: Threshold to Infinity, Who Are You God?, Sex is a Divine Experience, Godliness in Relationships, The Maze of Life, Is Darkness Real? Make God Your Personal Friend, Awaken, Children of the Light.
I encourage you to experience the joy and transforming magic of this book, to read it and reread it. You just may find that you awaken to a reality you never dreamt possible in this lifetime. You may, finally remember Who you Really Are and who you have always been - a Child of the Light.
