5 out of 5 stars Rakkety Tam.......2007-07-28

A Redwall book - and that means fun dialog, great descriptions of feasts, excellent villans and heros, and a few minor variations on the common framework.

You can most likely jump in anywhere in the series, so if you haven't read any others you *could* start here. However, for most this will be a story read along the way, either in order of publication or in order of the timeline posted on the Redwall site - me, I like to go in publishing order. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Rakkety Tam.......2006-12-09

I rated this boook a five star because of all the action and all of the adventure. It is about a young squirrel who is a huge trouble maker who knows he should do something good in his life. But there is someone who finds out about Tammo and tries to kill him.I can only say someone dies who will it be I.......cannot say.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for all ages .......2006-09-09

This book is from an incredibly well written series starting with the original "Redwall" book. The "formula" is good against evil, loyalty and honor with only the glory of a job well done and the genuine gratitude that goes to those who stand up for what good and right no matter what the bad guys promise. Another tale in a not to be missed series of books for all-age readers

5 out of 5 stars One of Redwalls's best!.......2006-08-12

I loved this book from start to finish, it had a twist having a hero that didn't come from redwall,(Most of them do). It had me on the edge of my seat during the final battle between Tam and Gulo, the characters were great; as always, and it was just, in general a good book. My favorite creatures are squirrels so i loved it,i cant wait to read the next redwall book!

              Book Description

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

1 out of 5 stars OK Story but unfulfilling.......2007-10-09

I was so looking forward to this and had to wait on it from the library for 2 months. What a disappointment. DO NOT SPEND MONEY ON THIS BOOK! It's shameful an author would publish a work such as this for loyal fans and not feel massive guilt. There was NO romance, NO climax, NO resolution, NO satifying ending. I agree to what another reviewer said: Wait until all 5 books are published and read them back-to-back as one book. Individually, at least this first book, was more like one long chapter. What a let down. Shame, Shame, Shame.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to new series.........2007-10-09

Karen is the first female author to have captivated me with her unique style. Both my fiance and myself are huge fans of the Highlander series, having read them all, including the short-story, "Into the Dreaming". Although the series started to get a little repetitive for me (only slightly with the male characters), I found myself to be very content with it all in the end. She did a wonderful job with flowing one book into the next, carefully unfolding the details that connected them all. I was really looking forward to the Fever series, being that it would bring out the even darker side of Karen, and was very satisfied with the first book. She left me curious as Hell for the next one. OF COURSE, I'll be going on vacation the day before it is released...but I suppose I'll just have to hit a bookstore somewhere along the way. Can't wait!!

5 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Book Karen.......2007-10-09

I have been a Karen Marie Moning fan for a long time. This new series of hers is outstanding. She has done a fabulous job with the world she has created within this book. Darkfever is book 1 in a series of 5.
Mac's sister is murdered while attending school in Scotland. Mac sets out to Scotland to investigate her sisters death. While there she discovers that she can "see" things others can't. Mac learns that she has a gift to see the world of the Fae. She finds protection and guidance with Jericho Barrons, a mysterious man who also seems to have gifts of some kind.
I honestly don't think 5 stars is enough. Karen has done an outstanding job. The mystery, the good and evil, the sexual tension. It is a great novel and I highly recommend it.
Some may be surprised at the end, for it is abrupt. But it is a series of 5 books. A person can't very well give everything out in the first book of a series, that wouldn't give them anything to write in the other 4. I can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Darkfever: A Thrilling Beginning to a New Series .......2007-10-08

Karen Marie Moning has produced a riveting storyline captured within the first book of a series of 5 novels all tied together in a Land filled with monstrous and deadly Fae that are being unleashed upon an unsuspecting Ireland. Following the death of her beloved older sister Alina, who had been brutally murdered while attending college in Dublin, Ireland, MacKayla Lane, a young, pretty, carefree blond, decides to go to Ireland in the search for answers as to why her sister was murdered. Upon arrival in Dublin MacKayla finds that the police have no leads and have closed her sister's case, that her hotel room is 2 stories up the stairs, plus she is sharing one bathroom with 4 other rooms; that the English language is not really understandable when spoken by the Irish, and that she is apparently losing her mind because she "sees" something that could not be real. MacKayla's life continues its downward spiral into terror as she discovers that she is a rare person of talent that is very valuable to certain humans, but also a death sentence if discovered by the Fae that are infiltrating Ireland. A protector, and potential love interest named Jericho appears, and Mackayla is soon living under his protection; but the situation is critical, and soon survival becomes upper most in MacKayla's mind. I was totally enthralled with this story. I love the premise of this story, the fight against evil, and all of the shades of gray that appear in this fabulous story of good vs. evil, and the courage of the human spirit to seek revenge against evil that kills just for the sport of killing. I recommend this novel, I loved it, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I would give this book 10 stars if I could, but I am restricted to only 5. Do enjoy this story - it will keep you up reading all night long.

              2 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick.......2007-10-06

The book just ends as though it is in the middle of the story. I don't mean there is a cliffhanger it just ends. No idea still about her sister; did not find her sister's diary; don't know about adoption; etc., etc.. I was shocked and have really never seen this before. I won't be reading the next book in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a new series.......2007-09-25

Darkfever is a hugely enjoyable book with an engaging heroine, MacKayla Lane, who recounts the way in which her life changed irrevocably following a telephone call from Dublin to say that her sister had been murdered. Mac, as the narrator, is looking back to events which happened over a year ago so we occasionally are told things that she didn't know at the time as we follow her travelling from her small town in Georgia to Dublin to try and find out more about Alina's death.

Mac's investigations seem hopeless and yet she perseveres but her attention is soon taken by some very strange events - an odd woman accosting her, a strange vision of a handsome man turning into an evil monster, and some unusual shadows. When Mac meets Jericho Barrons, rich owner of a bookstore right next to a strangely dark and empty part of the city, she is forced to face up to some unwelcome new truths - that Mac has skills as a Sidhe-seer and that her life is in danger.

Mac and Barrons team up in order to search for an ancient book that Alina was pursuing in order to try to defeat the Unseelies who are flooding into Dublin. However Mac is given little information with which to work, Barrons being master of cryptic conversation, and her own mission to find Alina's killer is still important to her.

The writing style of this book is excellent with Mac, as narrator, a very amusing character whose take on the world can be great fun, even as she's facing evil and dark things worse than she's ever considered. Her descriptions of some of the Unseelie are very amusing and yet her sense of fear as her world falls apart is also very well written. Although billed as a romance there's almost no romance in this story but it is clearly the beginning of a series and there are some hints as to the romantic direction into which it will go. The only real drawback of this book is that it doesn't reach any kind of a resolution, it just sets the reader on the path of Darkfever's world and makes the next book obligatory reading. This book feels rather like scene-setting for the major battle which one assumes will come in a future book. It is still, however, a really enjoyable read with some great characters, a light and fresh writing style and an interesting setting in Dublin.

BOSTON - Born at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston, Janet L. Johnson's "The Ritz Carlton Cat" is a book that weaves a tale in the style of Walt Disney. An intriguing blend of humor, drama, happiness and sadness, this is a whimsical, "children-of-all-ages" story of a little cat orphaned at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston by her mistress, Dame Tadlewad. In the frenzy of packing upon hearing of her father's death, Tadlewad forgot a hiding Darling Cat under the bed. Tadlewad suffered a fatal attack on the plane, and Darling Cat was all alone at the Ritz. This is a unique style picture book in every sense of the imagination. Only two illustrations appear in the entire book, but vivid imagery paint amazing pictures with carefully chosen words by Johnson, who has a real estate office in Gloucester, Mass. The book's opening is just such an example of this imagery: "It was one of those perfect blue and gold summer days of August that made the City of Boston sparkle in the sunlight. Darling Cat and Ali Cat were meandering through the Public Garden, pausing every so often to admire the rose gardens and beautiful flowers that were bursting with color and luxuriant in their foliage at the height of the season." With this kind of detailed storytelling, pictures are not necessary. This self-confessed "dog person" said the story of the Ritz Carlton Cat popped into her imagination during a stay at the Boston hotel herself eight years ago. Johnson said she was in town for the wedding of her daughter's friend. Enjoying a brunch in the Ritz with the bride's parents, Johnson (not much of a breakfast person) said she asked a hotel employee to give her Eggs Benedict to the Ritz Carlton Cat. At that point, the story just began evolving for two weeks on napkins, sticky notes and any little piece of paper she could get her hands on, she explained. Finally on Labor Day weekend, the story wrote itself in 2 1/2 hours and wasn't anything like the original shreds of storyline. And, not only did Johnson write this charming classic. She published it herself.... The story just finished its third commercial printing last year. Apparently the story may have some historic significance, according to Johnson. Recently 80-year-old Marie Faillace (nee Duplain) called Johnson to ask her how she even knew there was a Ritz Carlton Cat in Boston. "She saw an ad for my book in a newspaper and said her dad baked bread for the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston. There was Banino, who was the Ritz's Italian executive chef from France, much like Figardo (the book's main human character), who was Darling's savior." "Marie explained she had taken in a stray pregnant cat, gave away four kittens and kept the 'baby." She presented the last kitten to Banino in a basket with rose petals at the hotel. Faillace relayed to Johnson that the cat lived at the Ritz with Banino for a year and was treated and feted just like Darling Cat! Eventually, Banino brought her to his farm in New Hampshire as keeping the cat in the suite most of the time was not right, he believed. So, there really was a Ritz Carlton Cat, Johnson discovered. At the end of the book, there is a section called "Imagination," which asks questions of the readers. It is great for children as it asks them to verbalize what they visualize in their minds during the story. According to Johnson, three sequels are in the works and someday an animation of all of the stories, ala Disney, the way they used to be. The next book examines how Darling's friend, Ali, a royal cat from Monaco, ended up in Boston.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, imaginative and warm...we need more of this.......2001-03-23

I read The Ritz Carlton Cat out loud to my husband and we loved it. It is so totally charming! I came away with the feeling that there will be many more episodes and we eagerly look forward to them. I am going to tape record the story and send it to my grandson in Detroit. He's not a critic, just an ardent listener. The story is not too long that he'd lose interest, but just long enough to hold his attention. Kudos to the author for having the ability to reach the young...and the young at heart.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, absolutely charming!.......1999-09-09

I can't wait to read this book to my very first granddaughter, even though she is only one week old! The Ritz Carlton Cat will appeal not only to "kitty" lovers who will find her thoughts and adventures as fascinating as any human novel heroine, but to children and adults who find her tale of abandonment and learning to cope with her new life poignant and inspiring. The story brings back memories of working in Boston, strolling down Newbury Street, going over to the Charles River and enjoying the beauty of the Public Gardens and the Swan Boats. I recommend this book for its sense of humor, its touching situation and the possibility of meeting many other "kitty" characters in sequels to come.

Karen Armstrong speaks to the troubling years following her decision to leave the life of a Roman Catholic nun and join the secular world in 1969. What makes this memoir especially fascinating is that Armstrong already wrote about this era once---only it was a disastrous book. It was too soon for her to understand how these dark, struggling years influenced her spiritual development, and she was too immature to protect herself from being be bullied by the publishing world. As a result, she agreed to portray herself only in as "positive and lively a light as possible"---a mandate that gave her permission to deny the truth of her pain and falsify her inner experience. The inspiration for this new approach comes from T. S. Eliot's Ash Wednesday, a series of six poems that speak to the process of spiritual recovery. Eliot metaphorically climbs a spiral staircase in these poems---turning again and again to what he does not want to see as he slowly makes progress toward the light. In revisiting her spiral climb out of her dark night of the soul, Armstrong gives readers a stunningly poignant account about the nature of spiritual growth. Upon leaving the convent, Armstrong grapples with the grief of her abandoned path and the uncertainty of her place in the world. On top of this angst, Armstrong spent years suffering from undiagnosed temporal lobe epilepsy, causing her to have frequent blackout lapses in memory and disturbing hallucinations---crippling symptoms that her psychiatrist adamantly attributed to Armstrong's denial of her femininity and sexuality. The details of this narrative may be specific to Armstrong's life, but the meanin! g she makes of her spiral ascent makes this a universally relevant story. All readers can glean inspiration from her insights into the nature of surrender and the possibilities of finding solace in the absence of hope. Armstrong shows us why spiritual wisdom is often a seasoned gift---no matter how much we strive for understanding, we can't force profound insights to occur simply because our publisher is waiting for them. With her elegant, humble and brave voice, she inspires readers to willingly turn our attention toward our false identities and vigilantly defended beliefs in order to better see the truth and vulnerability of our existence. Herein lies the staircase we can climb to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

              Book Description

In 1962, at age seventeen, Karen Armstrong entered a convent, eager to meet God. After seven brutally unhappy years as a nun, she left her order to pursue English literature at Oxford. But convent life had profoundly altered her, and coping with the outside world and her expiring faith proved to be excruciating. Her deep solitude and a terrifying illness–diagnosed only years later as epilepsy–marked her forever as an outsider. In her own mind she was a complete failure: as a nun, as an academic, and as a normal woman capable of intimacy. Her future seemed very much in question until she stumbled into comparative theology. What she found, in learning, thinking, and writing about other religions, was the ecstasy and transcendence she had never felt as a nun. Gripping, revelatory, and inspirational, The Spiral Staircase is an extraordinary account of an astonishing spiritual journey.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the Mind of a Religious.......2007-08-25

I read the other reviews on this book, not because I wasn't going to buy it, but to see what others thought. Of course, I was going to buy it, after all this is Karen Armstrong we are talking about here. I am interested in what ever she thinks. I loved the book. I am always interested in stories about people overcoming difficulties. Karen Armstrong had to overcome a lot. It is interesting, to say the least, to know what the religous view of this writer actually is now after she's been through everything she's been through.

The book takes us with her on her spiritual and vocational journey. It answers the question of "Why did she write all those diverse books about God Anyway" I would recommend this book to anyone who in their own spiritual search is looking to see how someone else came through it and ended up apparently whole. This is a book I will keep. I find the last chapter especially captivating and I will need to review it until I can internalize what she is saying so beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars An Engrossing Spiritual Autbiography.......2007-07-20

For those of us that have loved Karen Armstrong through her marvelous scholarly works, a glimpse into the experiences that shaped the scholar can be wonderful. In this book, Armstrong explores the experiences that brought her out of her religious disenchantment to become the fascinating, God-enamored woman that she is today. The pages are by turns heartbreaking, heartwarming and deeply profound. I strongly recommend this magnificent autobiography.

4 out of 5 stars An honest revelation.......2007-06-02

Having read almost all of Karen Armstong's profoundly meaningfull studies I wondered how it all came about. This book provides a very honest insight into the sufferings of a young woman and the origin of her enduring search for the truth about so-called "revealed" religions

1 out of 5 stars Facile and Dishonest.......2007-04-28

Ms. Armstrong has published a brace of well-edited, post-Christian titles. The Spiral Staircase is a sadly biased and one-sided slash against her Catholic roots. Those that have stood between Armstrong and her revisionist goals are poorly presented, while all who supported her are glorified--then are jettisoned in typical cameo fashion. Take, for example, Rebecca, the anorectic nun who stayed (long enough to provide Armstrong a nifty plot device, at least!). Poor emaciated Rebecca is used as a foil to revisit all that was horrific about that beastly convent. Then, when that part of Ms. Armstrong's life is no longer needed, Rebecca is entirely abandoned.

Given that this is the author's second version of the same post-convent events of an earlier book, how much of this text can be considered authentic? Will there be a definitive third title? Who will be the goat this time around? Be careful, it might well be you!! Ms. Armstrong is seemingly not responsible for her life, but many others are. Take care, all.

Ms. Armstrong has seemingly appeared in every other soft, non-offensive Unitarian project around, and she maintains an evangelical adherence to Catholic guilt trips for all moderate-to-orthodox Christians. Read her last dozen pages of this text, and witness her simplistic and absurd analysis for 9/11. She has abandoned her past, yet she claims absolute privaledge to speak for Christianity and monotheism. We are all one, and we should all think like Ms. Armstrong. Fundamentalist much?

5 out of 5 stars A rewarding read; parts worth reading again.......2007-04-07

I have never read any of Karen Armstrong's books, but I have seen many references to her writings and have perused her books at the bookstore and found them interesting. I thought this might be a good book to begin with and I was not disappointed. She is an interesting woman who has opened herself and has shown all the darkest corners of her being in what I found to be a very matter-of-fact way. She certainly has enough baggage from a rather strange past, but I felt she was honest in dealing with her frustrations, her weaknesses, her mistakes, and her achievements. I do find her bitterness at the Catholic Church a bit much at times; surely there was someone in the convent or in her early Catholic life that was a positive influence. She can be a harsh judge of others, but I think she also judges herself harshly at times.
The last chapters of Spiral Staircase are especially interesting and worthy of going back to reread. I find her explanation of the paradox of the absent God and as she says "a presence in my life" insightful. Her analogy of ascending a spiral staircase and her spiritual journey is so apt. Ms. Armstrong has done for me something that I do not have the time, skill, or intellect to do and that is to step back from the boundaries of a very traditional religious upbringing and take a much larger view of this unnameable force in our lives that we so innocently and ineffectually call God.
I would also recommend The Seven Storey Mountain by the Trappist monk Thomas Merton (who is referred to in the last pages of Spiral Staircase). Thomas Merton's faith journey leads to the Catholic Church rather than away from it, but I believe the ultimate destination of both Merton and Armstrong are not that far from each other.
