*Yawn*.......2005-03-17
I adore the Avalon series, but this book, quite frankly, sucked. While it was not anywhere near as horrible as "Ancestors of Avalon", it was still bad. I wish people would learn that Bradley cannot be imitated. If you wish to write about Arthurian legend, be my guest. Stop trying to mimic Bradley though!
If you want to read this novel, get it from your library. Don't waste your money on it.
Tribute to One of the Best Authors of the Best Legend.......2004-07-15
This is a collection of short stories centered around Avalon and King Arthur written in tribute to Marion Zimmer Bradley (author of the infamous "avalon" novels). These short stories are very enjoyable and fun to read. One of my favourites was the one written by Bradley herself which centred around Morgaine teaching (or trying to) this young, wild girl, the ways of Avalon. She runs off and finds this stone which tests the courage and will of everything Morgain ever knew. And I loved the one about Morgaine's cousin (!) who is sent from her court in disgrace to live with her because she nearly killed her brother. She is attacked by a wolf (her and her party) and is the only survivor and meets as well as falls in love with a psycho named Myriddin (who I think is Merlin, but with maybe the welsh spelling?) He reminds me of how Merlin was portrayed in the movie Excalibur, this crazy eccentric psycho wizard. Escapt in this story his magic is really shapeshifting abilitues. And we watch as this girl tries to learn his ways. And on and on and on. All these stories are way fun to read. If you like this subject, get this. It's fun.
Introduce your love of myth and legends with this anthology.......2003-08-22
As a pre-service teacher, I am eager to share this anthology with any teacher who would like a less than bible-thick introduction to Arthurian literature for their teenage students. Short stories, that not only simmer with the breath of Avalon and mystery of legends, it is also a painless introduction to great fantasy writers like Marion Zimmer Bradley. I am promoting it for use in SSR (sustained silent reading) in class-rooms and as a fine teaching resource to launch into bigger things like Morte de'Arthur. It's focus on the little people (the extras) suggests the very essence of fables and myths - the fluidity and re-telling of a story to legendary status. While I wouldn't say every story appealed to me - I would say that this must testify to the fact that it includes a tale bewitching enough for a wider audience than I anticipated. Try it! on yerself and on yer teenagers. It's a great platform for engaging in olde worlde literature and classics - creative, sweet and sometimes shocking....loved it...won't sell it..pass it on
Interesting but lacks the true magick of Avalon.......2003-06-22
Out of Avalon was good but it gave the taste of something that could have been better. The tales that are featured in this book were interesting but some were down right boring. I had fallen asleep on The Castellan and thought Me and Gallahad could have been written by a fanfiction amateur. I was impressed however with the stories Avalonia and Finding the Grail, especially loved the line that stated men go out for treasures both rare and magickal but women are the ones that find it. Overall it is a reccomended read but still could have been done better.

Book Description
"If what you read here makes you wish to go to the Holy Land, I shall be glad; and if you go in the right way, you surely will not be disappointed. "But there are two things in this book which I would not have you miss. "The first is the new conviction - new at least to me - that Christianity is an out-of-doors religion. From the birth in the grotto at Bethlehem (where Joseph and Mary took refuge because there was no room for them in the inn) to the crowning death on the hill of Calvary outside the city wall, all of its important events took place out-of-doors. Except the discourse in the upper chamber at Jerusalem, all of its great words, from the sermon on the mount to the last commission to the disciples, were spoken in open air. How shall we understand it unless we carry it under the free sky and interpret it in the companionship of nature? "The second thing that I would have you find here is the deepened sense that Jesus Himself is the great, the imperishable miracle. His words are spirit and life. His character is the revelation of the Perfect Love. This was something new and wonderful and welcome that came to me in Palestine: a simpler, clearer, surer view of the human life of God." Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American clergyman, educator, and author. He graduated from Princeton in 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1874. He was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. minister to the Netherlands (1913-16). Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.

But the hardships of the Old West throw her for a loop until a handsome gambler shows her the West through his eyes.
Benton "Rand" Randall leaves the corporate rat race to find anonymity in Way Out West. What he finds is a breath of fresh air in a sassy saloon girl who warms his frozen heart. But his past catches up when a vengeance-seeking former employee threatens everything he values, including the town and Callie.
Will he lose Callie if he exposes his identity to save the town and his corporate empire? Can she love a man she knows only as a gambler?
Customer Reviews:
Yeehaw! : ).......2003-03-14
City girl Callie Sumner is running -- far away from boyfriends who consider her only trophy and doormat material. When she hears about the fantasy vacation spot, Way Out West, Callie jumps at the chance to escape from her problems and applies for work as a saloon girl. Little does she know she's jumping from the fry pan into the fire.
For a week at a time, Rand escapes from the corporate rat race and becomes "himself" at Way Out West. He plays the role of a gambler, enjoying the brief respite of anonymity and wide open spaces. When he meets Callie, Rand's comfort zone explodes into nothingness, and he finds himself falling head over heels for the sassy saloon girl.
Can Callie and Rand trust their instincts, share their secrets, and become a couple? Only time, and the capture of whomever is trying to ruin WAY OUT WEST, will tell.
Following on the heels of her debut novel, KALEIDOSCOPE, Ms. Marriott again captures readers' hearts with her charming characters and unique storyline. For a fast-paced, creative, mysterious, and delightful romance read, don't miss WAY OUT WEST. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Marriott's exhilarating novels.

So unique................YEAH RIGHT.......2007-04-12
W-O-W. This book is a a beautiful girl with red/gold hair and eyes with golden specks in them. She attracts all men wherever she goes and........shes completely oblivious to her looks and allure. Gosh, this book is just so unique. AND the guy is handsome with exotic slanted striking blue eyes AND A RAKE!!! Like I said wow.... This is the most ridiculous novel ever. I have read only 6 chapters and I already know whats going to happen next. The rake and the oblivious beauty are going to overcome their doubts of each other and fall in love on some wild and wicked adventure. Oh, and also she needs protection because her cousin the evil Malcolm will come and find her and force her to marry her to claim her tremendous fortune because her grandfather has died and left her all his money instead of Malcolm and must escape to horrid England from blissful Scotland and straight into the arms of the GREATEST RAKE IN ENGLAND!!!!!! So now that I've basically told you exactly what will happen, I at the same time saved you a lot of time and disappointment.
Love this book.......2007-03-10
I would actually give this 4.5 stars. They did seem to argue a bit too much but loved it otherwise. It's not my favorite Mallory book but it's close. It comes in a close third behind James and Amy's stories.
Run-of-the-mill Romance.......2006-12-10
Johanna Lindsey has written lots of books based around the Malory family but this is one of the earlier books featuring Tony (Anthony), the fourth brother in age after Jason, Edward and James. Tony is a confirmed rake who notices Lady Roslynn Chadwick, a Scottish woman who has arrived in London, and sets out to charm her. Unfortunately for him Roslynn is looking for marriage - and only that - as she is trying to escape a potential forced marriage for her fortune from one of her Scottish relatives. In the end Tony marries her to rescue her from this problem (although he's hardly doing it for unselfish reasons) and although Roslynn accepts she insists that he continues to have a mistress - she is sure that he won't remain faithful to her so would rather know that he is definitely unfaithful than always worry.
I think it's this part of the book that I didn't like. Sometimes the "Big Misunderstanding" you seem to need in most romance books is a turn-off and in this case it is. Equally, although Anthony is described as stunningly attractive (of course!) his actual nature doesn't seem very appealing to me - he lies to Roslynn all the time to get his way, purposely tries to compromise her (mostly successfully) and generally moves his way through the book thinking pretty much only of himself. Until he decides he loves Roslynn, of course.
This is one of Johanna Lindsey's earlier books and it shows in the interactions between the characters; books written more recently tend to have the hero more sympathetic, understanding and less self-centred which fit far better with my modern reader's wishes. Still there's nothing intrinsically WRONG with this book, it just didn't work for me.
Historical details are patchy and the language is Regency mixed with American, as one expects from these sorts of authors. As one also often expects, we have the obligatory Scottish characters who speak in a broad Scottish dialect. It seems strange that there are so many Scottish people in American-authored Regencies - I suspect this is something to do with ancestors from Scotland or something. Hint to American reads - Brits don't find the Scottish accent particularly attractive so it doesn't work as a plot device if you want to sell loads of your books in England!
I actually didn't find this book very romantic - the interactions between the two characters were lust rather than romance. I much preferred Lindsey's book "Say you love me" which was the story of Derek, son of Jason, which seemed to have more love and tenderness than this book. If you've not read either and want to give one a go, try that one rather than this, I think it would be less disappointing.
I Love Anthony!!.......2006-08-13
This was probably my favorite in the series. I loved the descriptive scene when she first finds Anthony on the terrace. I also fell in love with him then! I started off with "The Loving Scoundrel" and loved it. When I found out there was a whole series of Malory books I HAD to read them. Johanna Lindsay is a GREAT romance writer!
Lindsey at her best.......2006-06-20
This is the Johanna Lindsey book that first hooked me on her books and in particular the Malory novels.

When he catches her in the act, Kim thinks she's done for.Until he suggests she become his apprentice. Kim wonders how tough it could be faking a bit of hocus pocus. But Mairelon isn't an act. His magic is real.
Customer Reviews:
Annoying but entertaining.......2005-05-21
It's getting so I can't read a Regency novel without becoming irritated by the author's attempt at thieves' cant, fake French accents, and high-class drawls. Most of the authors seem to borrow from Georgette Heyer and Joan Aiken, so we have Regency toffs, coves, sharps, and trulls as filtered through at least three generations of authors (I'm assuming Heyer and Aiken got most of their patois from authors like Jane Austen, who actually lived during England's Regency period). It's hard on the ear and should be as dead as a Vaudeville sketch of some beleaguered minority.
Americans are particularly bad at trying to fake English speech patterns two hundred years dead. I wish they'd stop trying, especially the good ones like Patricia Wrede who can actually tell a story.
So, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?
"Mairelon the Magician" is an amusing comedy of manners--more dialogue than magic, and you have to memorize long lists of characters who keep showing up at the most inconvenient moments, such as in the midst of a burglary or an attempted elopement. The two main characters, Mairelon the magician and the street waif, Kim are sharply drawn and likeable. Everyone else is distinguished by a funny accent, or some sort of annoying habit such as chewing on the ends of their mustache. I was minded to lean across the campfire and club Hutch with a piece of firewood the next time he put his mustache in his mouth.
Other than that Mrs. Lincoln....
Well, I did actually enjoy reading this confection and now I'm reading the sequel. What can I say? It's cute and there is a modicum of plot, plus a happy ending. I love happy endings, but I do hope that Hutch shaves off his mustache for the sequel.
Best Book Ever.......2005-03-01
It's a great book about an orphan, Kim. She happens upon a "magic show" performed by Mairelon, and while he is busy doing the show, she tries to steal from him. He catches her and ends up teaching her what isn't just slight-of-hand tricks, but actual magic. It's a great alternate-earth book filled with adventure and excitement. I highly recommend it to all teens, because it is just one of those "great books."
Something refreshingly new..........2005-01-10
Kim is a street thief asked to spy on a "frogmaker" down in the marketplace for a few coins. This casual job turns Kim's world upside down as she is swept away into a world of conspiracies, illusions, the London gentry, grouchy men, magic, and silverware worth more than it's weight in gold. This book was something refreshingly different, what with Kim blurting thieves' cant whenever she lost control. The cant is quite clever in itself, and if you read it, you can make connections between the language and origins of certain words. Or maybe that was just me. In any case, a great read that I'd thoroughly recommend.
hilarious!.......2004-12-11
Patricia C. Wrede has yet to write a boring book!
Mairelon the Magician tells of a street girl, Kim, who gets caught up in the adventures of Mairelon, a ridiculously funny wizard, and his cranky henchman, Hunch. They are trying to recover a stolen magical platter(yes, as in a big plate). Their biggest problem in doing this seem to be that half of the countryside thinks that Mairelon stole the platter himself, there are half-a-dozen OTHER interested parties ALSO trying to find it, someone may or may not be following Kim, and the platter has somehow ended up in the hands of a very affluent nobleman who is unaware of the many people who are interested in it. The book has an absolutley hilarious ending.
This is one of those rare gems that just about everyone will enjoy. I (a teenage girl) love it, and my dad got ahold of it and loved it also. The language may be a little boring for some young readers if they are not very advanced(although if you are a young reader and you are bothering to read this review, you will probably enjoy the book). It is not quite as down-right ridiculous as Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. The humor here is a little dryer.
There is one book that follow this one: Magician's Ward. I personally like Magician's Ward even better, because it has a dash of romance.....but that's just me. I highly recommend Mairelon the Magician to anyone who wants a good book and a good laugh.
the ending makes the book.......2004-09-05
First of all, speaking up for the "young readers" whose abilities seem to be taken so lightly by other reviewers...Any kid who actually is a "reader" will have no trouble with this book. I didn't. For me, the ending was what made this book get 5 stars. I have read and reread the book, and every time end up reading the ending out loud to myself, complete with voices to fit each character, and hardly being able to for laughing so hard. Fainting, gunpoint threats, elopement, surprise, and confusion are all packed into the climax. The atmosphere is extremely farcical, which is why I have no problem with the stereotypical characterization of some minor characters- it's supposed to be like that, and it just makes it more funny. I recommend the sequel for those who have no problem with a romance aspect and more civilized adventure. And also read Sorcery and Cecelia.

Book Description
Is God a public figure?
Does Christianity have a legitimate role to play in the public realm of politics, business, law, and education?
Or are secularists right?
When they relegate religion to the strictly private realm of faith and feelings?
In
Total Truth, Nancy Pearcey offers a razor-sharp analysis of the split between public and private, fact and feelings. She reveals the strategies of secularist gatekeepers who use this division to banish biblical principles from the cultural mainstream, stripping Christianity of its power to challenge and redeem the whole of culture.
How can we overcome this divide? Unify our fragmented lives? Recover authentic spirituality? With compelling examples from the struggles of real people, Pearcey shows how to liberate Christianity from its cultural captivity. She walks readers through practical, hands-on steps for developing a full-orbed Christian worldview. Finally, she makes a passionate case that Christianity is not just religious truth but truth about total reality. It is total truth.
This new Study Guide Edition of
Total Truth is filled with fresh stories, examples, and illustrations. Based on questions and comments raised by readers of the book, it is ideal for individual or group study.
Total Truth received an Award of Merit in
Christianity Today’s 2005 book awards and won the
2005 ECPA Gold Medallion Award in the Christianity and Society category.

Excellent survey.......2007-08-10
This book I used as a textbook for a graduate level seminary course in analyzing cultural trends. Pearcey has done an excellent survery of contemporary American culture from a soundly biblical perspective
Must Read.......2007-06-20
One of the most important books about our culture written in the last couple decades. It is deep content but easy to read.
Total Truth: Liberating Christianity from Its Cultural Captivity.......2007-06-14
Great prospective, intelligent, simple, straight forward and compeling.
Much needed in a confusing world.......2007-06-11
Even if you're not a philosopher, you need to read this book. It's a careful look at the source of different attitudes and ideas that have developed over the centuries. It will help you understand a LOT of popular culture and thinking. If you feel a little lost after a couple of chapters, keep going; she explains everything further on. I think every parent and every teen should read this book and get the discussions going.
Brilliant Guide to the Modern Thought Battle.......2007-05-24
Pearcey provides a well-thought-through explanation of the contrast between post-modern thought and a Christian worldview. Each chapter contains numerous footnotes, which point one to source material and add to the book's credibility. It also contains a "further reading" section, which was helpful to me in knowing where to go to next. A study guide is also available on Pearcey's Total Truth website.
Book Description
Does God belong in the public arena, or is religion solely a private matter? Nancy Pearcey makes a passionate case that Christianity is not just religious truth, but truth about all reality. It is total truth.

Amazing.......2007-07-31
Absolutely well researched and a MUST READ for anyone who is interested in the development of Christianity and Western Civilization. I had to slow down and read little bits at a time to make sure I absorbed it all-but overall well done!
A necessary understanding of how Christ and the Gospel are Total Truth.......2007-01-06
A great book though at times a hard read but one of the most valuable books for Christians to come in a decade in my opion. Shows clearly how there are many world views but only one the one Christ taught is Total Truth! A must read to see how to be a witness in the world no matter what kind of job you hold or your place in life. Neil

This should be required reading for all Christians.......2006-08-23
This is a fantastic book dealing with a number of things, but mostly, how Christians have allowed themselves become marginalized in the world and its culture. Pearcey starts by showing how Christians have become their own worst enemies through a lack of self-education about their own faith, and worse, an "anti-intellectual" stance throughout the centuries that, as a result, has relegated Christiany little more than a superstituion even among its believers.
Pearcey then deals harshly with Darwinism, pointing out its obvious flaws and the blatant intellectual dishonesty behind it, smashing any seemingly-reasonable defenses of the philosophy to bits. These chapters alone demonstrate how Christians have failed to refute philosophies which should have never taken any foothold in the culture over time, and how Christians allowed this to happen.
The next section discusses how the reformation movement discouraged all the knowledge that great Christian minds had accumulated over centuries, and how Christians have often elevated emotion and feeling for any intellectual basis for faith. She also shows how Christians themselves have unknowingly swallowed bits and pieces of philosophies that are blatantly incompatible with Christianity. As you read through these sections, it's easy to understand how Christiany hasn't been taken seriously by some of the world's great minds in the past few centuries.
Finally, Pearcey finishes by indirectly answering the question she teases us with the whole book: What we, as Christians, should do about it. To sum it up, the answer is simple: It's time for us to become educated as to why we believe what we say we believe, and become salt and light in our own corners of the world. The book does a good job of outlining part of the case for the former, and to the latter, reminds us that, no matter our vocation, we can influence our cause just by being people of intergrity and treating others as Jesus would.
In a society where Christians, by and large, have grown intellectually flabby, this should serve as a wake-up call to all those who care about the cause. I have been around too many Christians who never challenged their faiths because they were afraid they might find that it wouldn't hold together. Pearcey was not afraid to do just that--walking away from the faith she knew as a child for years--but came back after an objective analysis as to the truths of Christianity versus those of other worldviews. Her story should be an inspiration for us all to dig deeper.
This is both an informative, historical book as to how Christianity got to where it is, and a work that has practical application. It should be required reading in Christian colleges and high schools, and I would strongly recommend that parents share this with their kids before going off to college, where their faiths will be challenged. Pearcey should be applauded for her work, as a book like this has been long overdue.
