David Mitchell's second novel, Number9Dream, tells the story of Eiji Miyake, a young man negotiating a hypermodern and dangerous Tokyo to meet for the first time his secretive and powerful father. Naïve and fresh from the Japanese countryside, Eiji encounters every obstacle imaginable in his quest, from his father's--and in-laws'--reluctance for the encounter to occur (Eiji is the bastard son) to fiery entanglements with yakuza (the Japanese mafia) to the overwhelming size and anonymity of Tokyo itself.

The novel is cartoonish in that Eiji has a vivid and violent imagination that fills the book with daydreams. When not chain-smoking, forlorn Eiji wanders the city following vague or cryptic leads that invariably dead-end or land him back among yakuza. Mitchell (author of the critically acclaimed Ghostwritten) has a smart, eclectic writing style that seems foreign, and the novel is well paced, but the yakuza encounters are too cinematic, complete with unusual torture and pyrotechnics. Moreover, in addition to Eiji's daydreams, the last half of the book contains excerpts from the diaries of his great uncle's World War II naval heroics and bizarre short stories that Eiji reads while hiding--the latter of which make for tedious reading.

Number9Dream is crafted from too many disparate components; it does not seem to be a full expression, but an overly crowded one. Readers will sympathize with Eiji and his search, but in the end will wonder what effect, if any, all the extraneous forces had on him. The book provides many fun moments, but ultimately it doesn't really add up to the sum of its parts. --Michael Ferch

Book Description

Number9Dream is the international literary sensation from a writer with astonishing range and imaginative energy—an intoxicating ride through Tokyo’s dark underworlds and the even more mysterious landscapes of our collective dreams.

David Mitchell follows his eerily precocious, globe-striding first novel, Ghostwritten, with a work that is in its way even more ambitious. In outward form, Number9Dream is a Dickensian coming-of-age journey: Young dreamer Eiji Miyake, from remote rural Japan, thrust out on his own by his sister’s death and his mother’s breakdown, comes to Tokyo in pursuit of the father who abandoned him. Stumbling around this strange, awesome city, he trips over and crosses—through a hidden destiny or just monstrously bad luck—a number of its secret power centers. Suddenly, the riddle of his father’s identity becomes just one of the increasingly urgent questions Eiji must answer. Why is the line between the world of his experiences and the world of his dreams so blurry? Why do so many horrible things keep happening to him? What is it about the number 9? To answer these questions, and ultimately to come to terms with his inheritance, Eiji must somehow acquire an insight into the workings of history and fate that would be rare in anyone, much less in a boy from out of town with a price on his head and less than the cost of a Beatles disc to his name.

3 out of 5 stars Half Baked And Disjointed But There Are A Few Bright Spots.......2007-07-17

The quaintly named Number9Dream by David Mitchell is a novel that lies uneasily between the sleep and wakefulness and is unfortunately as half baked. I've read and enjoyed Mr. Mitchell's Ghostwritten (with qualifications) and couldn't quite get past the first fifty pages of Cloud Atlas.

The problem with Mr. Mitchell's writing is that he seems too much in love with his own prose and seemingly pays little attention to plot, story or characterization. It is hard to think that Mr. Mitchell is not aspiring to the style of a favorite author of mine, Mr. Haruki Murakami, but they turn out remarkably different kinds of work. Number9Dream, like Ghostwritten, has some dazzling writing, the work of a true artist. It seems to fall short however in actually narrating a story which is a major sore point. Some of the plot elements in Ghostwritten and Clound Atlas, especially the whole "nuclear device, save the world" theme was just too thin for a novel not written during the Cold War. Like Ghostwritten, this book has several seemingly different stories, or dreams, with very little apparent continuity.

The saving grace for Number9Dream is some of the wonderfully imagined episodes - so I'd give the book a half hearted thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Mitchell the Adaptive Literary Expert.......2007-03-19

I've got problems enjoying books which've been translated from their original language. I gave up on Soul Mountain after 20 pages, quit on 100 Years of Solitude with 20 pages to go and barely held out Kafka on the Shore (maybe because I couldn't stand not knowing where the heck Murakami was going towards the end, maybe the translator did an above-par job, maybe I was more patient).

So when someone slams David Mitchell for being a Murakami rip-off, I'm saying, "It's about time an English Murakami came about!" (although this probably just shows how poorly read I am). Number9 Dream is lucid, complex (what do Yakuza members blowing each other up have to do with a Silence-of-the-Lambs-like scene in which a prisoner who claims to be God proves the truth of his identity to his interrogator?), verboise, un/cyber-real (one page the main character is laser-battlin drones, another he's being swallowed by an alligator in a massive city-wide flood), weird(!), philosophical at times (can the meaning of life be both unique to individuals and shifting with said individuals' life-situations?). It doesn't hurt that this book was nominated for the Booker in 2001 (as was Mitchell's Cloud Atlas in 2004).

I think a book like Number9 highlights, for me at least, the importance of being a master of diverse disciplines. There is severe need today for "adaptive experts" (high in both innovation AND efficiency), instead of the common "routine expert" (good at what he does best but hopeless in everything else).

Mitchell is an adaptive expert to the max, his one book demonstrating his casual mastery of multiple genres: fantasy, sci-fi, romance, "magical realism", letter-writing (a'la Blind Assasin), football, computer-hacking, even comedy.

No doubt Mitchell knows reality enough to make it his page on which he writes life to its fullest.

4 out of 5 stars Not easy, but very well written.......2007-03-14

Eiji Miyake comes from a small Japanese island to Tokyo to look for his father, whom he does not know. Via various ways to tries to get his identity and meet him and in the meantime he works on all kinds of odd jobs, from pizzaboy to employee of the railway lost and found office. He lives in a "capsule" above a video store together with a stray cat and a cockroach who are appropriately called Cat and Cockroach. Everywhere he meets people who are trying to help him in one way or another, but also some seriously bad guys. Slowly but surely he gets to know the identity of his father's family and later also of his father. But every story has its price...

It hardly ever takes me 5 weeks to finish a book, but this one did. This does not mean that it is not an interesting book: I found the story amusing, scary and sad at times, and the story about the Japanese kaiten (suicide torpedo's) pilots was interesting, strange and sad at the same time.

Isaac wrote: Number9Dream is a depiction of the dark side of Tokyo. It isn't the fastest read, but once you pick up the book, there are few things that will make you want to put it down. This is a book about night, crime, deceit and lies. The main character, a likable, kind and easy-to-connect with guy, is awakened to the true reality of Tokyo that most people don't know about and are much better off without knowing. His wild imagination and extreme and unpredictable luck get him into, and eventually out of, horrible situations with the yakuza. His desire to find his father is one which many can sympathize with. To know how far he is willing to go and the extent of trouble he is prepared for, only the book can tell. The result of his search is unsatisfying, but up until the last page, it is wonderful, exciting, comedic, horrific and dreamlike. A must read book if you ever had a dream you thought was so real it had to have happened.

Ryland said: Number9Dream is a conventional bildungsroman told in an unconventional way. David Mitchell writes the life of Eiji Miyake as he makes a 7 week journey, through Tokyo and the underground crime syndicate of the Yakuza, in search of his father, and his place in life. Number9Dream is like no other coming-of-age story you will read. Sometimes illusory, sometimes startlingly graphic and real, most of the time cryptic, and always poignant, Number9Dream will hook you and draw you in compelling you forward right up to the last sentence. Clues and connections when mapped out reveal a brilliantly planned network that shows the greatest attention to detail. Hidden meanings are carefully placed to be found and interpreted by the reader as he or she sees fit and afterwards you will be left either completely contented or desiring more.

4 out of 5 stars A challenging but rewarding book.......2007-08-26

Truly original works of fiction are hard to find these days. David Mitchell has given us such a work. Most of what's out there is like candy, fun to take in and soon forgotten. Mitchell doesn't take such a low view of the reader. This is an extremely challenging work which will reward the reader willing to open his mind and take in the story on a deeper level than what's on the surface.

The book is structured like a Russian nesting doll. Each story is somehow interrelated with the story after it. There are six stories total here. Mitchell ends stories one through five abruptly, and then tells all of story six, and tells the ends of the rest of the stories five to one. It's a very unique structure, and it says something about Mitchell's abilities that he's able to make it work.

Each story is also totally different in terms of style. We begin with a Melvillean tale of the sea, proceed to an English rogue's story, then a hardboiled 70s pulp mystery, then the story of a contemporary degenerate English book publisher, forwarded to a dystopian scifi tale set in the near future, and finally a halting, odd narrative of a man living in a post apocalyptic Hawaii. Each story has a distinct narrative style and has little in common with the preceding story, save the link.

This book gets the reader thinking about many themes. The main theme is breaking free of the shackles life puts on us. Each narrator is somehow constrained, either by society or the government. It also explores the effect rules for the society have on the individual. There are a few other minor themes, but you really should read the book to find out what they are.

My only quibble with this was the sixth story. The narration was so stilted and disjointed that I found it tough to finish it. I ultimately did not, because it was so tough to get through. This is my own failing, and I will have to read it at some point in the near future. It's one of the many challenges Mitchell puts to the reader.

This is a masterful work, which is sure to reveal new truths with each reading.

5 out of 5 stars Serendipity.......2007-08-02

My chief complaint with this book is the title. I was actually looking for "The Cloud Atlas" by Liam Callanan when I picked up this instead in the library, realized my mistake and read it anyway. What a knockout!

As other reviewers here say, the book features quite a welter of plot threads that take some time to weave into the fabric of a good story, but it's well worth the slight wait (my guess is you'll be hooked by the first page of chapter 3).

Yes, Mitchell does flex and flourish his dialects, but not to the point of distraction. And, yes, the book ends on a sci-fi note, but I wouldn't cast it as science fiction alone. It simply deals with human relationships that bridge time and anonymity...including the past and well into a speculative future. I found myself feeling more connected to humanity; not only to today's living cohort but also to yesterday's and tomorrow's. Now that's a trick.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Engaging and Funny.......2007-07-27

The author, at a reading in Philadelphia, admits to liking the structure
of this book because it makes it easier to serialize for magazine sales.
Good for him! Dickens wrote with that in mind and Mitchell is at least
as clever and a much better stylist to boot.
All the stories here-six tales, each with their own reprise-involve
improbable struggles against slightly mad circumstances. The comparison
to Murakami is unavoidable, but Mitchell is more concrete, less ethereal
and possessed of a certain sardonic wit that makes him unique.
Reading this book is not always easy, but the prose is seductive and
the stories will stay in your imagination.

the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005

5 out of 5 stars Great expectations of readers.......2007-07-23

Even after finishing the book I have a hard time telling friends what it's about. Too many details spoil the plot - suffice to say the individual six tales are subtly connected, though inherently separate, both in voice and substance. Perhaps the underlying message is that on one level or another, we are connected to the past and future of humanity.

The book demands a lot of its reader: we are asked to step inside the lives of very different personalities, via extremely different styles of writing. If you didn't like reading classic lit in school, or can't buy into sci-fi, you may have a problem with the overall story. It bothered me (in a good way) to be torn away from a character I'd just come to love, only to have to start over again with a new tale. Thankfully all stories are excellently told, and indirectly connected by the end (if you've read Stephen King's Dark Tower series and recognized the referrences to his other stories, then you get a rough idea of how these six tales are intertwined).
I particularly enjoyed the social commentary on a wide scale of subjects (from old age to potential downsides to consumer greed). My only criticism is that I would have loved to learn even more about some characters' fates. But perhaps that is the book's very charm, that it leaves you wanting more. It's definitely turned me on to Mitchell's other work.

3 out of 5 stars Essentially a book of short stories.......2007-07-10

While I get that the 6 stories were supposed to be related, I found all the reincarnation babble incredibly cheesy compared to the rest of the writing, and found it tedious to have to stop the middle of one story, start another, then continue it much later and forget who was supposed to be who. I obligingly read the book in order though, expecting a payoff, but found not much reason for this style other than the reincarnation cutesiness. However, a couple of the stories were extremely well-written and enjoyable, the first one about Adam Ewing being the least so (what was that?? So boring compared to the rest of the book, I can't figure out why he would choose to begin and end his book with that). The centerpiece story, the one that is uninterrupted, is absolutely my favorite, it brought me near tears several times. I would read this book again, but I would just read each story uninterrupted and skip the first one.

        Book Description

The distressed traveler Charlotte Cameron encounters on a rainy Scottish night is absolutely the worst man she could have invited into her carriage! It is Phillip Maddox, the reprehensible Duke of Colster, who brought the full weight of the ton's fury down upon her – simply because Charlotte encouraged her sister not to wed the powerful peer. And now the seductive devil responsible for her social ruin is sitting close enough to kiss...

Phillip's distaste for the meddlesome beauty matches Charlotte's – though, under alternate circumstances, he might have enjoyed sampling the sensuous charms of the tempting young chit.

There is grave danger, however, on the journey they now must reluctantly share – and a nemesis who means them both mortal harm. But can a passion that inconveniently ignites in the face of disaster erase a painful past...and lead two sworn enemies to a most unanticipated destination: the bedchamber?

        2 out of 5 stars YUCK!!!!.......2007-06-21

This is the first book I have read of Miss Maxwell's and I was not impressed! I thought it was BORING and UNBELIEVABLE! The main characters were dull and I thought passionless. It took me a long time to finish this book!

3 out of 5 stars Illogical heroine, and a lousy ending.......2007-06-16

I waited too long to review this book, so my comments will probably be sparse.

Apparently, Charlotte and Phillip first tangle in a previous book, and it aids in believing their connection. I didn't know this when I read the book, but it makes sense. It did seem as though you were supposed to know what had happened between them. Some readers say that if you didn't read the other book, it really took away from Charlotte and Phillip's connection, but I didn't think it was a huge problem. I still believed the chemistry between them.

I had two complaints about the book. The first was that I had a real hard time with Charlotte's antagonism toward Phillip. She blamed him for all her problems when he hadn't done a thing wrong. In that time period, she was the one who had wronged him, the one who'd caused all the problems. So it just seemed entirely illogical that she had a right to be angry with him. Secondly, I thought the ending sucked. It was too abrupt and incomplete. I was left wondering about too many things, and that's utterly annoying. It's likely that there will be another connecting book, but still, too many open issues leave a reader with a bad taste in the mouth. Some more closure would have been appreciated.

Bottom line, a decent enough historical. I liked that there was a bit more action than you find in many historicals. The romance wasn't too bad. I liked the book mostly, but I didn't find anything outstanding about it.

(I give this 2.5 stars, but you can't give half stars on Amazon ratings)

2 out of 5 stars Not a very strong book.......2006-11-26

Phillip Maddox, the Duke of Closter is the man at the center of a scandel. His bride-to-be has jilted him. Charlotte Cameron is the sister of the intented bride. Due to her sister actions she has been shunned by the Ton. They meet again when Phillip recieves word that his brother is alive. The brother that should have been the Duke. Now the two are running though out Scotland, trying to survive and find out the truth.
"In the Bed of a Duke" is the lastest offering by Cathy Maxwell and its not her best. The plotline seems to a good one, but the whole book seems rushed and not believible. This maybe a book not to read.

        3 out of 5 stars Maybe 3 1/2.......2006-11-16

A very easy to read, light-hearted romance. The book kept me interested but I was so disappointed in the ending. I felt like the author purposefully leaves you hanging so you will buy the next book. Most of the storyline focuses on finding the twin (the eldest - who will be the Duke) and then you are left wondering where the story went from there. I am not saying that every book needs an Epilogue but I seem to really miss them when they don't have one.

5 out of 5 stars In the Bed of a Duke.......2006-09-07

Phillip Maddox, the Duke of Colster, is headed to Scotland to confront Laird MacKenna, who he believes has his twin brother Justin. Phillip has never met his brother; he thought he died in childbirth. Along the way, in need of assistance, Phillip stops a traveling coach and gets a ride. When he steps into the coach Charlotte Cameron is seated within. Charlotte is the sister of Miranda Cameron. Miranda jilted Phillip at their betrothal ball with the encouragement of her sister Charlotte. When Phillip discovers that Charlotte is traveling to MacKenna's as well, he is furious thinking she may be in league with him. Charlotte is stunned and angry to be riding with Phillip. When he throws himself onto her seeking answers, the fine line they tread between hatred and desire is breached and they share a passionate kiss.

Upon reaching an inn for the night Charlotte and Phillip realize quickly that trouble is brewing. They manage to escape danger and hide out in the forest, where Charlotte soon discovers why Phillip is going to MacKenna. Phillip decides to seduce Charlotte into keeping his secret.

Charlotte's feelings for Phillip intensify. When they are once again thrown in danger, Phillip realizes that his feelings for Charlotte go much deeper than he imagined they would, but his station prevents him from doing what his heart desires.

When they are taken to MacKenna's castle, Phillip now understands that he has been brought there for a reason that has more to do with his ancestors and less to do with him. Representing his family, he is made to pay the price. In the end, Phillip will have to risk it all if he wants to be with the woman he has come to love.

In The Bed Of A Duke is excellent. The story is intriguing and the love affair between Charlotte and Phillip is passionate and heartwarming. The unique bond they share is beautiful. Although Charlotte and Phillip's story is wonderful, so much is yet to be resolved. I only hope there is not a terribly long wait for the next part of this saga to be released!

                  Book Description

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the Empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And of course the pirates want her dead, too. But Alicia DeVries has two allies nobody knows about, allies as implacable as she is: a self-aware computer, and a creature from the mists of Old Earth's most ancient legends. And this trio of furies won't rest until vengeance is served.

In Fury Born is a greatly expanded new version of David Weber's popular novel Path of the Fury, which has gone through six large printings in its original mass market edition. David Weber has added considerable new material, revealing the earlier life of Alicia DeVries before she embarked on her mission of vengeance, and illuminating the universe of the original story. The result is a novel with almost twice the wordage of the original, and a must-buy for all David Weber fans.

5 out of 5 stars Another great heroine from David Weber.......2007-09-12

I admit I am an Honorverse junkie. This new psycho-b-ch from hell is really fun too. Although it takes half the book to set up the real action, I did find it quite the page turner.

                  3 out of 5 stars Disappointed - still a solid read.......2007-09-01

"Path of the Fury" was the first book I ever read from David Weber and introduced me to him. I would said POTF and the first Honor Harrington book suffered from a pulp fantasy description on the back, but a A+ read between the covers.

In Fury Born, an expanded version of POTF, takes a tight, focused story and instead of filling in the blanks as you go (leaving a lot to your imagination) it steps you through the whole thing, spelling everything out for you.

There is also a clear difference in the style of the writing from David Weber of now (sections 1 and 2) and the David Weber of then (Section 3). Not all of the tech seemed to completely match up, either.

Overall I liked the book and I don't recommend you NOT read it. But the original Path of the Fury was better edited, focused and enjoyable. In Fury Born is more of a plodding, deliberate read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Simply Excellent.......2007-08-27

I'll keep this short and simple.

Characters that are well written. Plot lines that make sense. Action, adventure, real people in a future easy to imagine.

This book is well worth your time. Go ahead, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

                  5 out of 5 stars Furiously Good!.......2007-08-23

Pretty typical Weber product. Well worth the money for a good read and a good time! Self-contained - no need for sequels to keep you buying, although the end is set up for new stories!

4 out of 5 stars If you like Weber, you'll like this one!.......2007-08-17

A great book by one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed the previous version (Path of the Fury) when it was published. This version adds significant backstory and expands on the themes. Path of the Fury

Maybe it is because I have read and enjoyed the original, but the "seams" where the new material joined up with the older material were especially clear to me. I almost wish he had written it as a standalone prequel rather than what amounts to an extended novella at the beginning -- or better yet, continued the story from the end into new adventures for the characters.

Wapnick has provided a great service by bringing a concise understanding of the 50 miracle principles in the Course. After all, he's been doing this for many years and knew Helen. While there's no substitute for actually practicing the course in the daily lessons, this little book is extremely helpful in understanding a somewhat lengthy volume. Thank you Dr. Wapnick!
