    Book Description

In a small upstate New York town, an idyllic lake yields a ghastly discovery when the skeletal remains of a young woman missing for twenty-seven years are pulled from the icy depths—along with unmistakable evidence of her murder. Suddenly, the long-dormant case of Kelly McShane Braden’s mysterious disappearance is reactivated. And for two devastated men, dark emotions and disturbing secrets will also rise to the surface.

For local coroner Dr. Mark Roper, the murder is more than just a grim interruption of his general practice in sleepy Hampton Junction. Kelly Braden had been a surrogate sister. When the police insist the trail of Kelly’s disappearance is too cold to pick up again, he vows to find the missing pieces of the past that will lead him to a killer. Because that’s what cracks cold cases: “One guy who can’t get it out of his head.”

Yet Mark isn’t the only one with Kelly’s murder on his mind. Dr. Earl Garnet, chief of staff at Buffalo’s St. Paul’s Hospital, was once Kelly’s secret lover . . . and would-be savior. Until his plans to rescue her from an abusive marriage were cut short by her vanishing. Now, as the last person to see Kelly alive, he’s in danger of becoming the prime suspect, unless he can unmask the murderer first.

But neither man knows about the twisted chain of lies and corruption that led to Kelly’s death—or the shocking revelations that were meant to go with her to a watery grave. And the harder they push for answers, the easier they make it for their lethal quarry to zero in on them—and push back with deadly force.

With Mortal Remains, Peter Clement remains in total control of readers’ nerves from the very first page, once more wielding heart-racing suspense and scalpel-sharp terror with a master surgeon’s skill.

5 out of 5 stars An old murder stirs up memories........2004-04-11

Peter Clement scores with "Mortal Remains," a crackerjack medical thriller. Dr. Mark Roper is a dedicated country doctor in Hampton Junction, a small town in upstate New York. He is shocked when the body of Kelly McShane is pulled up from a lake, twenty-seven years after she mysteriously disappeared. Kelly used to baby-sit for Mark and he idolized her. It was no secret that she was anxious to leave her abusive husband, Chaz Braden, and there were hints that she had a mysterious lover. Mark decides to investigate Kelly's death, especially since the police regard her murder as a cold case that is unlikely to be solved. Helping Mark with his investigation is Dr. Earl Garnet, who knew Kelly when they were both medical students. As their probe deepens, the two doctors risk becoming the next victims of a murderer who wants to keep old secrets buried.

This story could have been trite in the hands of a lesser writer. Clements uses the "murder victim found many years later" formula skillfully. He develops his characters with care and brings his story to life with vivid descriptions, interesting medical details, and a sharply delineated plot with some surprising twists and turns. Dr. Roper is a sympathetic protagonist, a compassionate and hard-working doctor who has a special relationship with his elderly and isolated patients. His adversaries are complex individuals with hidden motives, and there are plenty of red herrings to keep even the sharpest reader off balance.

If you like medical thrillers with lots of tension, varied characters, a well-developed plot, and a touch of romance, then you will probably find "Mortal Remains" both engrossing and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A Graphic and Gripping Medical Thriller.......2003-11-10

Charismatic, compassionate Dr. Earl Garnet, Peter Clement's series hero, has a problem. More than a quarter of a century after his residency days at New York City Hospital, he's solidly established in his chosen profession, living happily in Buffalo with his obstetrician wife, Janet, and their young son...life is good. However, Coroner Mark Roper and Sheriff Dan Evans' sensational discovery of the 'mortal remains' of his fellow student, old friend and former lover, Dr. Kelly McShane Braden, in the murky depths of an upstate lake at Hampton Junction, NY, twenty-seven years after her mysterious disappearance threatens that serene existence and puts his own life in jeopardy once he commits to actively involving himself in Roper's decision to proceed with a thorough investigation into what is now an obvious case of murder. Unhappily married to abusive Dr. Charles 'Chaz' Braden, IV (son of prominent and powerful Dr. Charles Braden, III)at the time of her disappearance, Kelly came to Earl for help in leaving him the same day that she vanished. Although their connection was never established at the time since 'Chaz' was the primary suspect and the case was eventually shelved for lack of evidence, dedicated Dr. Roper...who knew and loved Kelly from his childhood...is now determined to track down her killer, and Garnet somewhat reluctantly volunteers his assistance. Bad mistake! Suddenly felled by a mysterious illness, while Earl fights for his life, Roper doggedly continues to search the past for reasonable answers to present enigmas. He is absolutely convinced that one or both of the Bradens are at the heart of the matter, and once he digs deep enough, he and Dr. Lucy O'Connor, his brilliant and spunky resident assistant, uncover a generation-old cesspool of murder, malpractice and fraud that not only provides ample motivation for Kelly's seemingly inexplicable death (as well as the rapidly mounting death tally at NYCH), but also places them both squarely in harm's way. Once we reach this point in the novel, it's impossible to put the book down until justice is finally served in a genuine nail-biter of a tour de force finale.

Anyone at all familiar with Earl Garnet's previous walks on the wilder, darker side of his profession has already experienced Peter Clement's enormous talent for turning the nuts and bolts of modern medicine's issues and technology into complex, jet-propelled, reader-friendly medical thrillers. What I also thoroughly appreciate is his equal talent for creating protagonists that move and intrigue me. Aside from an exceptionally strong cast of supporting characters, something that I thought was particularily interesting about "Mortal Remains" is that Dr. Clement took the risk of subordinating his well-established series hero in favor of spot-lighting two new, secondary characters: Mark and Lucy. That gamble really worked for me and added a great deal to my enjoyment of this wonderful addition to an extremely solid series.

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting thriller.......2003-09-02

Sheriff Dan Evans of Hampton Junction in upstate New York had volunteers dragging the nearby lake for the body of an elderly Alzheimer's patient who disappeared several days ago. They found the bones of a left forearm of a body that has been in the lake a very long time. This leads to the sheriff and Dr. Mark Ruper, the county coroner to dive into the lake to retrieve the body.

When they locate the body, it is obvious that a crime occurred and the forensic team must examine the scene. When they are finally able to bring the skeleton up, they discover it is the body of Dr. Kelly McShane Branden who disappeared twenty-seven year ago. Mark, who has fond memories of Kelly won't rest until her killer is brought to justice. Earl Garnet, who believed at the time that Kelly did a disappearing act to escape her abusive husband, assists the doctor in seeing justice occur. Both men are almost killed because they refuse to let a murderer escape.

Fans of Michael Palmer and Robin Cook must add Peter Clement to their list of writers of exciting medical thrillers. Readers get a real sense of the victim through the eyes of those who cared about her and hope that the doctors will be successful in their quest. The protagonist of this novel is a family doctor who goes the extra mile for his patients, a hero in the truest sense of the word. Readers will love him and hope there will be more medical thrillers starring this special humanitarian.

    5 out of 5 stars A Superb Medical Thriller With a First-Rate Plot.......2003-08-25

If you've been plotting the career trajectory of Peter Clement over the course of his last couple of books, you have undoubtedly noticed that he is improving by leaps and bounds. He has never written a bad book, but he seems to have been working toward writing that one novel that would ensconce him firmly upon that 'A' list of writers who don't need to be on a list --- you automatically remember them and their novels.

Everything in MORTAL REMAINS is just about perfect, from the quiet creepiness of the opening paragraphs as a rural county sheriff and physician-coroner make a grisly underwater discovery that solves a decades-old disappearance and opens a murder investigation, to the closing chapters, wherein Clement sets the reader chasing along multiple plot lines in races against death.

Dr. Earl Garnet, a familiar figure to Clement's readers is back, but MORTAL REMAINS is more the story of Dr. Mark Roper, a physician with ties to rural upstate New York and the sorrows of his past. His duties as part-time coroner result in his discovery of the mortal remains of Kelly McShane, missing for over a quarter-century. Roper's discovery brings him into direct contact with Garnet, who has a secret about McShane.

Roper has his own history with McShane --- she was his babysitter and a patient of his father --- and as a result both men have a vested interest in discovering who ended her life so violently, and why. Their investigation begins to uncover secrets that have lain buried and fallow for over a quarter-century, but that are no less dangerous once revealed. Garnet and Roper discover that, as they slowly stumble toward the truth, they are placing themselves and those around them in terrible danger.

Roper has an additional complication. His new resident, Lucy O'Connor, seems too good to be true, and may well be. Her arrival is almost too precipitous to be random, and she seems to have ties to the area that she is reticent to reveal. Roper must determine whether she will be his salvation --- or his worst nightmare.

Clement's plotting and pacing in MORTAL REMAINS is absolutely first-rate, and while a good bit of this finely written novel takes place in a hospital (it is, after all, a medical thriller) Clement provides a nice change of pace by moving a good deal of the action to rural New York. His introduction of Roper as an unconventional general practitioner who is the ideal match for his rural patient base is handled perfectly. Roper is too good a character to be consigned to literary oblivion; we'll hopefully see him in a novel of his own in the near future. And Peter Clement has become too good a writer to be known only to a limited audience. If you haven't read Clement before, jump on MORTAL REMAINS now.

4 out of 5 stars Must read for Blackstone Family fans.......2006-09-09

If you are a fan of the Blackstone series by Ms. Alers then this was an enjoyable read, I think better than the first story involving Ryan. The characters were intense and their love was believable. The only problem I had is that there was a major secret that Tricia did not share with Jeremy until the end which was quite unrealistic but really, who cares, it was a wonderful romantic escape.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet but too short.......2006-07-25

I enjoyed the story but due to numerical constraints I thought the story was too short and almost rushed to the end. Loose ends were tied up too neatly and quickly but a sweet story with a plus size heroine as the love interest - at last some realism lol!

"Very Private Duty" is Jeremy Blackstone's and Tricia Parker's story. Jeremy and Tricia were separated years ago because of Tricia's grandfather's fear that Tricia would make the same mistake as her mother - his daughter. Grandfather was afraid that Tricia would fall for the boss's son. Grandfather's fears were realized in Tricia falling in love with Jeremy, however, that is as far as the fear went. Jeremy and Tricia were really in love, even in their young life. But, love does not always work out as we want it to, when we want it to. Through misunderstanding, Jeremy and Tricia were separated and a lot went on over the 14 or so years they were separated. However, true love is hard to separate. After a long separation Jeremy returns to the farm, not only to help take over his father, Sheldon's business, but because Jeremy needs to be nursed back to help.

Tricia comes home to visit her grandfather and finds her old love, Jeremy back at home and needing help. Who better to help nurse him, then nurse Tricia. The two become patient and nurse and soon their love is uncovered. Jeremy and Tricia realize their love and let their love for each blossom.

If you've never read this series it is a must read. There are 3 books in the series and each book is better than the previous. 3 out of 5 stars Repeating Lovers.......2005-09-12

Rochelle Alers brings back The Blackstone's of Virginia as we take a look at the youngest son and a past love that requires love, compassion, and patients to deal with.

Jeremiah "Jeremy" Blackstone returned home from a DEA mission gone bad to only need a private nurse to help care for him while he return to his normal state of himself. When his father and brother realize this they ask his once fiancée Tricia Parker to be his nurse neither knew of the love that the two shared before and neither knew of the lie that had spilt them apart.

Tricia Parker had been visiting her grandfather on the Blackstone Farm when she heard that Jeremy had been hurt after having his brother and father ask her to take care of him while he made his recover she decided that she could at least give him the benefit of the doubt and help him back to health even though she still held him responsible for certain turns of her life.

Neither Jeremy or Tricia realize what would happen with true love standing between them nothing would keep them apart even their stubbornness for one another but could a simple truth of matter keep them apart or would it only bring them together.

Rochelle Aler gives an intriguing look at the family dynamics as she writes. She allows her characters to show who they are through their positions in the book and what they do for a living. Rochelle will always give a person a hard look at what romance is as she continues to write intriguing stories of love.

4 out of 5 stars Time Heals All Wounds.......2005-08-15

Two young lovers and best friends promise to marry upon completion of college. A simple misunderstanding sends them separate ways.

    Fast forward fourteen years....

Tricia Parker, a registered nurse living in Baltimore, has returned to her childhood home of Blackstone Farms for a vacation and to spend time with her grandfather. Gone is the 18 year old brokenhearted girl. In her place now stands a woman. "She had gained weight in all the right places. Her body was full and voluptuous."

Jeremy Blackstone, a DEA agent, has returned home to his family farm to recuperate from injuries sustained in his last undercover mission. Over the years he has visited home wishing to run into Tricia, but to no avail. His wish has finally come true. His father has asked Tricia to be his private duty nurse.

Older and wiser, can these two make a go at a relationship again? Will Tricia succeed at mending more than his broken body? Or are their past transgressions still very much part of the present?

In book two of The Blackstones of Virginia series, Rochelle Alers explores the strained relationship of two lost souls and the importance of forgiveness. I particularly liked her colorful and descriptive depiction of the full figured Tricia. Enjoyable and quick read.

Back Cover of the Book Reads:

At one time, nothing had been able to quench Jeremy Blackstone's insatiable hunger for luscious Tricia Parker. He'd lived for their passion-filled encounters even though they were from such different worlds. Then ugly accusations of her betrayal ripped them apart...

Years later Tricia had come home to help her grandfather, not to rekindle her affair with Blackstone. But Jeremy was injured and needed her nursing skills. Staying by Jeremy's bedside and seeing to his most intimate needs stirred a sensous yearning in Tricia she couldn't control. Like deja vu, the magnetic closeness they once shared ignited an irresistible attraction that inexorably pulled them together...again.

I loved this book and honestly can't believe someone said this book was awful. This book was great, and in so many ways, classic Rochelle Alers. Jeremy and Tricia have that once in a lifetime love that you only wish, hope, and dream you could have, and Alers writes their passion for each other better than almost anyone. I highly recommend this book and also highly recommend buying any other books by her especially in the Hideaway series.

    4 out of 5 stars Coming home..........2004-11-05

Intrigued by the first Blackstone brother, Ryan from The Long Hot Summer? Couldn't wait for the next story to be released? Well wait no more. Rochelle Alers is back with her second installment in The Blackstones of Virginia series. This is Jeremy's story...

During their teen years, Jeremy Blackstone and Tricia Parker were in love and virtually inseparable. Their plans for happily ever after came to a screeching halt when Jeremy up and leaves without any explanation.

Fast forward fourteen years. Jeremy and Tricia are both back at Blackstone Farms; it's not a joyous occasion though. Jeremy has been hurt and needs 'round the clock care, and with Tricia being a nurse, she's asked to provide his care. Both Jeremy and Tricia balk at the idea, but realize their arguments are fruitless, so they quickly establish a platonic nurse/patient relationship. Before long, the couple become aware that the passion that burned between them so many years ago was not extinguished with their break-up, instead it was merely laying dormant, waiting for a little spark to bring it flaming back to life. Will Jeremy and Tricia be able to get past the hurt and secrets that they harbor and accept that their destiny is inexplicably intertwined?

VERY PRIVATE DUTY was a quick, heartwarming read. If you've ever doubted the age-old adage of "absence makes the heart grow fonder", Rochelle Alers shoots down all doubts with Jeremy and Tricia's journey to forever. Ms. Alers is definitely a master of the romance genre and fans new and old are sure to treasure this story just as I did. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Locked in stasis chambers, they are buried deep beneath the waves along with the rest of Atlantis. 100,000 years later, six survivors awaken to find that the human race is missing, Earth has been turned into an amusement park, and swarms of giant, alien bug creatures plot to take over the planet. It's up to these time-lost Atlanteans to clean up the mess - if they can manage to get along for more than five minutes! Beginning in the distant past and plunging into a far-flung future, Crux is a Sci-Fi adventure with much heroism and humor. In Crux V. 2 wandering the remains of an abandoned future Earth, the Atlanteans must contend with the warrior forces of the Negation, a terrifying and ruthless extra-dimensional race. Their only hope of survival is find the long-lost human race - but every exploratory mission simply takes them further into danger. Crus is a science-fiction series not about science but about people, about an ad hoc team of six strangers learning to depend upon one another for their very survival. Smart - with heart.

        5 out of 5 stars Another 5-Star Story.......2002-12-28

Collecting issues #7 - #12 of the on-going series Crux book 2 is even better than book 1. One of the reasons I've grown to love this series so much is that each character has a distinct personality and that aspect comes across very well.

The scene where the Atlantean group reveal one of their story-telling rituals was a great touch by Waid, et. al. Not only did it reveal something of the culture of Atlantis but gives added clues to each character's personality and the way they view their current situation - fighting for their survival against a foe they can neither understand nor communicate with. The question of what happened to species homo sapiens, while answered somewhat is only partially so. Those that are answered lead to yet more mysteries. Moral and ethical questions are also raised. If you could go back in time would you try to avert a disaster if you could? Would you still do so knowing that while you might save some people it would mean a much greater number would suffer and possibly die in the future that would not have done so before? These are only some of the dilemmas confronting the Atlanteans. And it is very interesting to see that the mysterious stranger is not the over-arching god-like being book 1 at first implies. Even he is surprised when some things do not turn out quite as he planned.

Crux is a scifi/fantasy fan's tale and highly recommended - particularly for people who enjoy character-driven stories. I also recommend Crossgen's other trade Negation v. 1 to learn more about the antagonists the Atlanteans struggle against (not to mention Negation has one of THE coolest, most charismatic Bad Guys ever seen in any comic series - Charon, the God-Emperor of the Negation Universe).

5 out of 5 stars Highly detailed classic for serious practioners.......2006-12-17

I teach meditation and I am educated in biology, biochemistry and psychology. I am also a student of world religions and a yoga practioner. During my graduate school years, I was also a Teaching Fellow in Physiology and I teach workshops on pranayama and biofeedback. Therefore, I think my opinion has some weight in this arena although I realize there are more serious yoga practioners who have more in-depth knowledge than me. My purpose in sharing this information is to provide context from my review. I hope this is useful.

This book is incredibly detailed and goes deeply into respiratory physiology, muscles, practices and the details of pranayama practice. There are clear explanations, however, many people may find them to technical without a biology background or the desire to take this information in slowly.

There are many good diagrams and photos in the book that any practitioner will find helpful. In some cases, they are unique in the yoga literature in some way and I can't imagine not having this book on your shelf if you are serious about the practice of pranayama.

While this is not the most colorful or modern looking text, it certainly packs a lot of information into a small space. It is also written by someone who has travelled this road and understands it both technically and from the inside. In short, it is an authoratative text on this subject.

A lighter book along the same lines which I have also read is the Science of Breath. For beginners, this title might be more appropriate. However, any practioner at any level will eventually want to own this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2006-10-23

This book is a treasure to me. It teaches a safe means of progressing through all of the variations of pranayamas. If all of the advice is taken, there will be no problems in this area of your personal practice.

This is only one part of the yogic path, though. The rest needs to be in place for this to be effective. For that I rely on Yogani's Advanced Yoga Practices book. It gives step by step, safe instructions utilizing the techniques of the Gheranda Samhita, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, as well as other great works. I highly recommend it to any serious yoga student.

I am so glad to have found "Light on Pranayama". I am somewhat of a beginner to the serious practice I've undertaken, but with this book I feel confident that I will succeed. Thank you BKS Iyengar.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent work! .......2006-03-19

As far as I know, it is the only work that gives such complete instructions for this very important aspect of yoga. It deserves more attention.

1 out of 5 stars Too much unnecessary in depth, not simple.......2006-02-24

Mr Iyengar says you need teacher to practice Pranayama, on the other side he makes thick book which he himself thinks can not be used without a teacher. After reading many books, I have concluded following:

Try The Little Book of Yoga Breathing: Pranayama Made Easy instead of B.K.S. Iyengar's book and see for yourself.

Scott Shaw's book is an answer to any introductory pranayama and worths it's weight in gold.

        Following are two techniques:
        Alternate Nostril Breathing
(Anulom Vilom Pranayama with no breath retention) This pranayama (control breathing) is done with alternate breathing from the left and right nostrils for cleansing of Nadis. (energy meridians). Seated in a convenient posture, start off with slow inhalation from the left nostril first by closing the right nostril with the middle of right hand thumb ,and after fully filling the lungs, (not the belly breathing) breathe out slowly from the right nostril by closing the left nostril with the two ( left hand middle and ring) fingers. Now breathe in from the right nostril by closing the left nostril in the above manner and exhale from the left nostril by closing the right nostril with the right thumb. It completes one cycle. Do this for three minutes for two months then gradually increase to 5 minutes.

Do it two hour after eating or drinking. (Do it on empty-stomach) Do not eat for 15 minute after you are done. Better to lie down for five minutes after you are done. If you limit practice to maximum of five minutes, it will be the best.

The very first sign you will experience is lightness in the body and clearer thinking.

The practice of this breathing for a period of three to four months can open up thirty to forty percent of the heart arteries' blockages. This pranayama alleviates all the diseases of the body, leads to the state of joy, enthusiasm for living , fearlessness, peace of mind and deep meditation.

        Benefits:
-Hair will regrow within two months of practice.
-Body will go to it's ideal weight by itself.
        -Face becomes bright and luminous.
        -Lost vision will return.
        -Removes fear/anxiety of any kind.
        - Aligns both hemisphere of the brain for full brain functionality
        - Creates a deeper sense of well-being and harmony
        - Helps alleviate migraines and headaches and frazzled states of being
        - Works great in situations where you find yourself anxious, board and need grounding
-Blockages in the arteries of the heart are removed and the arteries become clean, making circulation unimpeded.

        Ujjayi Pranayama

        1. You can do this sitting, standing or walking anywhere anytime.

        2. Inhale slowly through both nostrils, keeping the throat slightly constricted so as to make a gentle sound that will help you to feel the breath in the throat. The sound will remind you of ocean waves washing up the beach. Concentrate on the feeling of the breath moving in and out through the throat.

        3. During inhalation do not allow abdomen to bulge out, let the chest expand.

        4. After completing inhalation slowly exhale. (Either by both nostrils or by left nostril) During exhalation chest should go inside and abdomen should remain steady.

        Remember :-

        1. While doing Ujjiayi air should touch the throat.

        2. Breath must be mentally locked in chest area. (Do not do belly breathing)

        3. After practicing it for few days, knowing your limitations, keep the ratio between inhalation and exhalation 1 : 2.

        4. In easy Ujjiayi Pranayama, inhalation and exhalation can be practiced by both the nostrils.

        Benefits:
This simple practice has a subtle influence on the whole body. It calms the mind and has a soothing effect on the nervous system. Ujjayi is very useful for people with high blood pressure as it slows down the heartbeat. It has subtle effects on the flow of life force in the astral (energy) body and helps you to be aware of its movement within the sushumna (astral spine).

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.......2005-12-09

What an excellent book on the art of pranayama, a skill which requires respect and conscienciousness. I have read the "Light on Yoga," another book yogis should not be without. Both books offer an avenue into the vast Hindu pantheon. To the reviewer who thinks Hinduism is gibberish, you are truly missing the point of yoga. Yoga and Hinduism cannot be separated. If you want a practice devoid of sprituality do pilates or aerobics. Yoga is designed to prepare the body for a spiritual practice, whether you want it or not.
