Book Description

When Haitians tell a story, they say "Krik?" and the eager listeners answer "Krak!" In Krik? Krak! In her second novel, Edwidge Danticat establishes herself as the latest heir to that narrative tradition with nine stories that encompass both the cruelties and the high ideals of Haitian life. They tell of women who continue loving behind prison walls and in the face of unfathomable loss; of a people who resist the brutality of their rulers through the powers of imagination. The result is a collection that outrages, saddens, and transports the reader with its sheer beauty.

4 out of 5 stars Promising Cultural Portrayal.......2007-01-12

Great portrayal of the cultural identity of Haiti. Great job done by Danticat. Excellent language choice and beaufiful images. Can be compared to Zora Neale Hurston's style of writing. Expresses the theme of heritage conservation.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book.......2006-06-20

It is refreshing to read a book published in a rich country about the common people of a poor country that is written from their point of view. The characters in this book could be, and may have been real people. They are portrayed with sympathy but not pity, with a realism of experience that cuts the reader. If only we could write about the american poor with this excellence. If only we would read more stories like this. If only...

5 out of 5 stars Emotive peek of life in Haiti and Haitians in the US!, .......2006-02-16

Krik! Krak! Edwidge Dandicat's second stroke of genius (the first being Breath, Eyes, Memory), takes readers through the terrors and triumphs of Haitian life with nine short stories. In Haitian folklore, storytellers say Krik! to alert listeners that a story is about to be told. Krak! is the response of listeners alerting the storyteller that they want a good tale told.

Dandicat not only captures the essence of Haiti, but the deeper levels of the human spirit with her trademark lyrical prose. A doomed refugee adrift on a cruel sea, a knowing prostitute and a frustrated father battling with the truth of his own dismal future are among the most memorable characters. Reading Danticat's splendid collection of stories gives you access to a world of people and places that you will grow to love. With tragic characters, subtle images of beauty and hope, and gestures that are never overdone.

Danticat's writing accomplishes the greatest task of any short story writer; she lets you empathize with her characters and walk around in their shoes. These stories are good for the heart. In a time when book stores' shelves groan beneath the weight of "girlfriend fiction," Dandicat's work is a refreshing reminder that good literature is not dead!

4 out of 5 stars Krik? Krat!.......2006-01-23

Edwidge Danticat's book was touching. It was based mostly on the lives of the haitian people(expecally women)during the Haitian Revolution. It talked about peoples lives and how hectic things were. The book also touched on the traditions or beliefs of the Haitian people. I recommened this book becase it is the type of book that gets you thinking about life and the strugles of people that you never really here much about..it makes you see that in the real world everthing isnt perfect.

Thanks to Isaac Babel, there is one city I'd care to see in Russia(Ukraine)-that would be Odessa.Odessa was where the great Babel was from and Odessa was also the turf of Benya Krik, who is my favorite character in the history of literature. To get a sense of Babel's scope, check out one of his anthologies;'Benya' is a great Babel compilation for anyone who wants to cut to the chase-and which includes Babel masterpieces such as 'The History
of My Dovecot' about a pogrom from from a kid's viewpoint. But my favorites are the Benya Krik stories, particulary 'The King' in which Benya and his boys prevent a pogrom from taking place at his sister's wedding in a quasi-religious sense because we know who did it indirectly-as if Benya-or God was responsible for burning down the police station. If we had read the Benya Krik stories in Hebrew School,I never would've dropped out-and it's no mystery why Stalin executed Babel.

Meet the Bedwyns…six brothers and sisters--men and women of passion and privilege, daring and sensuality…Enter their dazzling world of high society and breathtaking seduction…where each will seek love, fight temptation, and court scandal…and where Rannulf Bedwyn, the rebellious third son, enters into a liaison that is rather risqué, somewhat naughty, and… Slightly Wicked.

With his laughing eyes and wild, rakish good looks, Lord Rannulf Bedwyn is a hard man to resist. Imagine Judith's shock when the same stranger turns out to be among England's most eligible bachelors…and when he arrives at Harewood Grange to woo her cousin. 3 out of 5 stars Most of the Bedwyns aren't exactly likable..........2007-06-16

After reading the first two books in this series, and two other books by Balogh, I wasn't expecting much from Slightly Wicked. But I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't absolutely love it, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. The book had much more character and emotion, plus a little more meat, than the others of hers. The other two Bedwyn books just seemed so cold and like a clinical narrative - though maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way. The testimonials at the front of Slightly Wicked are glowing, calling Balogh's books passionate and sensational and vivid. Me, I just don't see it. Slightly Wicked did have a bit more emotion to it, but I still didn't find it to be something that really pulled at me.

The books is fairly typical for a historical...the wealthy nobleman, the poor young miss, forbidden romance, the woman not feeling worthy, etc. Nothing all that original. But it worked for the story. Judith and Rannulf have a nice chemistry and the romance between them is developed fairly well. I could believe the love between them more than I could between Eve and Aidan in Slightly Married. And I enjoyed the fact that the story had more meat to it; that it wasn't just the characters fluttering about. It wasn't suspenseful, but there was a nice added aspect of Jude being accused of stealing jewelry - though I must admit that I saw that plot point coming from ten miles away.

Like the other books, Balogh, in my opinion, portrays the Bedwyn's in too negative a light. I still can't stand Freyja, and unfortunately her book is next. She is just too judgmental and b****y for my liking. And Wulfric...I know Balogh is going for the hook that Wulf is cold-as-ice and you just can't wait for his book to see him melted, but there's a line between developing and outwardly cold character with hints of humanity, and a character that is hopelessly hard-hearted. To me, she's gone too far with Wulf. I can't sympathize with him at all...and the silly thing? I've already read his book, months ago. I can't remember a thing about it - which I suppose says a lot about the book. And the whole way he carries him drives me nuts. I know it probably fits the times, but I can't find much appealing about a guy who is described a thin-lipped with dead eyes, and who carries around and uses a jeweled quizzing glass and walks with an unneeded cane. (And hearing about all the nights he spends with his mistress also doesn't enamor me.)) So yeah...the Bedwyn's just don't come off as all that lovable.

And a last comment on the book...one thing in particular that I didn't really like was the decidedly Cinderella-esque edge to the book. There's nothing wrong with the Cinderella story, I suppose. It's a classic and immensely popular. But it's also overplayed. The book just screams Cinderella...the beautiful but poor woman who has to live with wealthy, unkind relatives who treat her horribly. The cousin who has aspirations of marrying the lofty Lord Rannulf, while the revered Rannulf is taken with the down-trodden Judith. Then him riding to her rescue when she is dangling at the end of a proverbial rope. There's even a kindly grandmother figure. Some variation on that theme wouldn't have gone unappreciated.

Well, now that I've rambled enough...Slightly Wicked is still probably the best book by Balogh that I've read, but still not an exceptional book. I probably wouldn't have gone through the effort of gathering the whole series if I hadn't stumbled across all the books without looking for them.

                  3 out of 5 stars Nice..........2007-05-01

This book was pretty good except I hate the way Judith's family treats her. They treat her like a dog with such disrespect. And Rannulf doesn't like it and actually his actions say so. This book is hott and sexy but it just wasn't one of my favorites of the Slightly series.

                  4 out of 5 stars A well-written and engaging romance.......2007-02-02

I'm a real fan of Mary Balogh's books. I think "More Than A Mistress" and "The Secret Pearl" are brilliant pieces of writing with engaging characters. These are some of her older books though, her newer books are the "Slightly" series following the Bedwyn family and the "Simply" series which tell the stories of four schoolteachers (not all yet published).

Slightly Wicked, therefore, is a story about the Bedwyn family. It's the second in the series and follows Lord Rannulf Bedwyn, brother to the Duke of Bewcastle. The events take place a month after the close of the first book in the series, Slightly Married, which followed the story of Aidan, second brother.

Rannulf is a very different character. Both the Duke and Aidan have very much lived up to the expectations of their positions - they do their duties admirably (apart from Aidan marrying a coal-miner's daughter). Rannulf, as third son, should have gone into the church - but didn't. Instead he's spent the last decade or so not doing a great deal, just wandering about and having fun. He's pretty bored and not expecting much out of life but is on his way to see his grandmother, who has made him her heir.

On the way he comes across a stagecoach in the ditch with a number of stranded passengers. He agrees to ride to the next village for help but takes up one of the passengers, a young lady, on his horse. When they get to the village he realises that she is an actress and courtesan and so they spend a couple of very pleasant nights together. He offers to go with her to York, her destination, to prolong the acquaintance but she runs away without saying goodbye except in a letter.

However, it wouldn't make much of a story if that was it! Rannulf and Judith meet again under unexpected circumstances and although she's entirely unsuitable for him he can't quite seem to let go. Rannulf takes a while to work out what his feelings are, Judith's whole life seems to be going down the toilet, especially after someone tries to rape her. Her position in life as drudge to a family is insupportable, her carefree and unthinking brother is bringing their family to impoverishment and she finds herself the target of a nasty plot. Having her secret lover in the picture is even worse - she wanted a time in her life to remember and dream about but reality has a nasty habit of intruding.

Although I enjoyed this book I didn't feel that it quite engaged me as some of her others have done. I liked both characters, although there seemed to be a lot of importance placed on the fact that Judith was beautiful. The theme of Rannulf trying to at last live up to his responsibilities was lightly played - and Judith's learning of her beauty was also part of her growing experience. There's nothing wrong with this book, it just didn't grip me like some of her others which is a shame as she is an excellent writer.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Book of Bedwyn Family .......2007-01-08

Slightly Wicked is the story of Rannulf the third son (brother of the Duke). Rannulf rides up on overturn stagecoach and takes one the passengers to the local village. This passenger is Judith Law who is on her way to be her grandmother's companion. She decides to plan of a fantasy and pretend to be actress and spends a few rainy nights with Rannulf. Of course when the affair ends they think they will never see each other again. It took some time to get into the novel but over it was quick day read with some great romance, adventure and dash of mystery.

Check out the whole series Bedwyn series. The six brothers and sisters of the Bedwyn family are introduced in A Summer to Remember. Aidan's story is told in Slightly Married, Rannulf's in Slightly Wicked, Freyja's in Slightly Scandalous, Morgan's in Slightly Tempted, Alleyne's in Slightly Sinful, and Wulfric's in Slightly Dangerous.

                  1 out of 5 stars I give up.......2006-07-24

I tried to be fair but after the first few pages of this book I knew there was no way I was ever going to pick up another Balough book.
I cannot relate to her writing at all. I was not disappointed because I had very low expectations but I really resent authors who seem to make a mockery of their fans by writing incredulous stories and expect us to enjoy because it is fiction.

Oh well I guess it is a good thing that I'm so terribly spoiled by the likes of Judith Mcnaught, Mary Jo putney and Gaelen Foley. All of who take the time to write mature stories for their ADULT READERS and making sure enough research of the genre is done to not have us doubt it when we pick up one of their books to read.

All three copies of Mary Balough's book in my library are not fit to be on the same shelf as the above mentioned authors, therefore they shall keep the trash can company.

With Astrologically Incorrect for Lovers under your pillow you'll be able to charm and manipulate any lover under the sun.

Hilarious and accurate Sun Sign interpretations. Naughty and cheeky insight into all the signs. Each sun sign interpreted; good points, and their bad.
If you buy this book and read it, you will not doubt be laughing. The author has a way of telling it like it is, but not the way it's usually told.

'Bureau 13' is the ultra-covert branch of the FBI assigned to handle supernatural criminals.  The public doesn't know they exist, the President denies any knowledge of their actions, and not every Bureau 13 operative is a human being.  Yet these wise-cracking, heavily-armed, federal agents are America's first, last and only line of defense against the growing tide of monstrous evil.

Yet these heavily-armed federal agents are America's first, last and only line of defense against the growing tide of monstrous evil. When a mysterious cloud rises from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Bureau 13 agents suddenly start to get slaughtered across the nation. Coincidence? Hell no. With the Pentagon ready to launch nukes at, well, everybody, Ed Alvarez and his team of Green Berets and wizards race against the clock as they try to penetrate the very heart of evil and save the entire world! But this enemy is something the Bureau has never seen before, and it knows they're coming...

Nick Pollotta is not as silly as Terry Pratchett, not as hardboiled as Mickey Spillane, and not as serious as Tim Powers. To me, his style seems to be in the middle of a triangle defined by those three writers. Funny without being goofy, and scary without being creepy. His combat scenes are worthy of sequences out of The Matrix. I wonder whether he writes his characters into crazy situations knowing how they will escape, or like them, figures out the solutions at the last second. His thorough research about the weapons, techniques, and settings he uses are appreciated. It's a lot of fun, but also feels educational.

An uplifting masterwork of comfort and compassion exploring

the ultimate questions of existence and transcendence.

Nothing has riveted humanity's interest more, nor has anything been more frightening or awe-inspiring, than the finality of death. In Home with God, the last installment of his bestselling Conversations with God series, Neale Donald Walsch asks the questions that everyone has longed to ask and receives the answers readers have all been waiting for. Through his profound and personal dialogue with God, Walsch explores the process by which all human beings must end their days here on Earth and begin their new life in God's Kingdom -- to which all eventually return, regardless of their earthly deeds. An astonishing and spiritual work, Home with God offers hope, comfort, and surprising revelations for all humankind.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read if the after-life interests you .......2007-10-01

Over the years I've read many of Mr. Walsch's books because I found the content to be inspirational or thought-provoking in several ways. I particularly liked "Conversations with God Book 1" (CwG Book 1) because it had a profound effect on my spiritual philosophy. In this book Walsch focuses primarily on the after-life, and if that is a serious interest of yours then this would be a good book to read. If not, then I'd recommend considering one of his other titles instead, such as "Friendship with God" Friendship with God: An Uncommon Dialoguefor example, or CwG Book 1 Conversations with God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 1), which in my view remains the best work he has ever done.

Great information, well written and mind opening to a new way of processing and understanding life and the transitional experience we call death.

I stumbled upon this book in a used bookstore, had no idea it was even out. Having enjoyed reading his CWG books, I grabbed it for a good read, but it was so much more than that. I was provoked in new ways, my beliefs du jour were challenged on every other page, I found myself writing notes till my fingers hurt...this is unusual for me as I have read ALL the books of this ilk for over 30 years and NEVER had such a response before. Since I enjoy being challenged and shaken up, it was an absolute mixture of joy and discomfort and ahas and oh ohs... If you are interested in the possibilities of what lies 'Beyond' this book gives a unique tour and I felt like I was 'there' (wherever 'there' might be!). I do not recommend this for the faint of heart or for those that are too sure in what they believe. For others it is a MUST!

1 out of 5 stars New Age Pablum.......2007-08-12

It is practically impossible to read this book with a straight face. The images and the dialogue are so sophmoric that one begins to wonder how the author could write this "dialogue" without blushing. To wrap genuine esoteric thought and principles up in such drivle is not worthy of the topic he addresses. Like most beginner's texts, it will prove to be either a stepping stone as an introduction to real life and death issues, or it will serve as a stumbling block to those who think that in reading this book they have found the "Truth" and will stop searching for real enlightment.
