5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Adult Graphic Novel.......2007-09-18

"I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League" is the third and final book (of which I know) of the Justice League graphic novels written by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. Like its two predecessors, this story is great and demonstrates how the traditional superhero graphic novel for adults should be written: with sharp writing, snappy dialogue, wonderful humor, great art, and a realization that the story can't be treated seriously.

The story focuses on character interaction--personality clashes, witty banter, and petty arguments (all done with pointed humor)--instead of superheroics (although there are some of those too). While the writers can't entirely avoid interjecting some leftism into the graphic novel (particularly when it comes to a theological discussion), the story nonetheless is enjoyable.

I rarely read a book more than once. But the Justice League stories that Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire produced are exceptions. They are good the first time you read them and good when you read them again. "I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League" defines how the traditional superhero story for adults should go and I recommend it to everyone--superhero / comic book aficionados and people who normally wouldn't pick up a superhero book or comic book alike.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League is yet another in the series of somewhat comic adventures of the Justice League of America, as told by Giffen and DeMatteis. After the very popular series many years ago they came up with a couple of miniseries, this being the second, and maybe not quite as good as the first.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2006-09-01

While I did not read its predacessor "formally the justice league" I had no trouble following the joke behind this. Like most comics I enjoy this book contains characters that are under used and under appreciated on the whole, and they are funny. I am disappointed only by the fact that three of the main characters in this, Sue Dinby, Blue Beetle, and Max Lord are all now dead. And others have gone into space (Guy), joined the justice League (power girl), gone a little crazy (Elongated man), or have devolved into the most hateable super hero ever (Booster Gold).
This is the last time any of these characters will be able to be funny, and that is a little disappointing. I want there to be more to this series. Discovering this comic was like discovering an old television series that was canceled before its time, you watch the episodes, you like them and then your left wanting more.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Follow Up to "Formerly Known as the Justice League".......2006-08-06

I picked up this book and "Formerly Known as the Justice League" at the same time.

"Formerly Known as the Justice League" was a hoot and had a ton of great humor and character interaction.

Unfortunately, "I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League" can't quite match it's predecessor. The humor feels a little forced and there are a lot of non-funny moments in the book. The character interaction is just not quite as good the the previous book. The story was not particularly interesting and hard to follow.

One can only go to the well so many times and perhaps this was one of those times. It's a shame because several of the characters in the book met their demise recently in several of DC's lead in series leading up to the "Infinite Crisis" mini-series.

It's not likely this particular version of the "Justice League" will make an appearance again with many key characters having gone on to comic book heaven. It's a shame they didn't get a chance to exit with a better book than this.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Formerly Known As..........2006-03-21

After reading Formerly Known as the Justice League I was expecting something as refreshingly funny and original in this but was disappointed. It is funny (at times) but not nearly as funny as it could have been. Not bad for a final outing since the events in Infitine Crisis really played havoc with these characters. Guess we will never get to hear another BWAHHAHAHAHAH in a comic again for some time. Sad.

5 out of 5 stars One of our all time most loved books.......2007-08-08

Picture a dark-skinned, big-nosed, tender-hearted 8 year-old boy, not yet grown into his over-large hands and feet, his limbs at that awkward, gawky pre-teen stage. Despised by his father, abandoned by his volatile Italian mother, cruelly tormented by his schoolmates - how can he even begin to know the meaning of love? This is the now-adult Marquess of Dain, our tormented, brooding, arrogant, loveless, wounded hero. Feared and shunned by the gentry, he stalks and plays in the dark underbelly of society. Until Jessica Trent comes along. Dain is dragging her nitwit brother down with him, and Jessica wants him away from Dain. The fun begins when they meet in a shop and `tussle' over a watch with an X-rated secret. It is pure joy to watch the intelligent, strong-minded Jess confound and infuriate Dain in her quest to free her brother from his influence. Never before has a lady so plagued Dain's mind and his libido! He blocks and parries her every move, until - after he's publicly besmirched her virtue in a pantingly hot, erotic encounter and walked away - she shoots him! Then the real fun begins, when Dain decides to marry her. Yet he's terrified of loving anyone. The little boy in him screams when he gets too close to Jess, just in case he loves then loses her too, and suffers further adult agonies of grief on top of the horrors of his childhood. It would destroy him to love a woman. Jess has to be patient, loving, and hotly seductive to get past his blockheaded resistance to her trying to melt the ice around his heart. And wow - when Dain breaks under Jess's seduction, he breaks spectacularly, trembling and vulnerable in her arms. The bigger they are, the harder they fall! Wait - there's more! The little matter of his defiant, tear-away, bastard son Dominic. When Jess discovers Dominic's existence, Dain's shaky world is completely uprooted and overset. This is a joyful, tearful, tender beauty and the beast classic you'll read over and over. And every time will be beautiful, all over again.

5 out of 5 stars The best romance book ever.......2007-06-21

There is no doubt this book is rated at 5 stars; I am only sorry there was no higher rating to give it.

This book is hilarious, well written, well plotted and the characters are perfection. Ms. Chase does not talk down to her readers, she assumes that we have brains even if we like romance books. The scene where the heroine reads Byron's Don Juan aloud to the hero is priceless. The humor of Byron is spotlighted and the characters are drawn as intelligent and literate.

This is perhaps the most perfect hero possible for a romance novel. Dane is arrogant, bull-headed, obnoxious yet also intelligent and troubled. Sounds standard fare? He's not.

Yes, Jessica the heroine is "fiesty" and passionate. Yet, she's not typical either. Her astute analysis of Dane and her manipulation of him is mesmerizing. (Her shooting him to get his attention and then suing him for breach of promise/slander is wonderful!) She "gets" the complexity that is the hero and once she makes up her mind that she wants him -- her actions/plotting are logical, astute and inspired.

This book is 12 years old, and new editions are printed. Why? Because it is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars The Best romance novel ever!.......2007-06-11

This book is at the top of so many romance readers' lists that I finally read it. And I found out there is a reason it's at the top of so many lists. It is simply the best romance/historical I've ever read. Dain is a superb reformed rake, and the heroine is strong, intelligent, passionate, witty, and the perfect counterpoint to hot-headed Dain. Put this at the top of your reading pile!

4 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2007-05-14

It really began to pick up later on in the book but when it did it was GREAT!The heroine was strong and I'm glad that it was not a typical beyond handsome hero! He was actually not the most attractive man and not the nicest. The characters both grew in the story. Their love had time to develop and it wasn't this fluffy story but really real and of the time.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!.......2007-04-21

I'm not going to summarize this book, because I'm going to end up giving everything away, but I'm absolutely in love with this book.

The wonderful thing about it, is that Sebastian grows up knowing that is absolutely horrific looking, and yet, the first time Jessica Trent sets eyes on him, she assumes he is a rake, complete with "sigh-worthy" looks, and an abundance of character.

Dain (Sebastian), on the other hand, doesn't believe Jessica is actually in love with him until towards the end of the book.

But I just love this one, because it's so refreshing. I've never-until now-come across a book where the hero is self-conscious and didn't grow up with a heaping of love.

Great read, I definitely recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Heather Cullman Novel.......2003-04-08

This is even better than "For All Eternity", to which it is a sequel. The characters (Nicholas' brother Quentin)and his undesired wife, Jane, are complex and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! ...........2003-01-29

a regency with nary a dead body in sight! No murder plot, no cartoonish villain.. yay!!. In short, this book is what romance is about: a relationship between a man and a woman.

This is the story of Lord Quentin Somerville, a rake to end all rakes. He has made a living out of debauchery until the fateful day he lays eyes on the Season's reigning beauty Clarissa Edwardes. He is instantly smitten and decides to pursue her. Tired of competing with Clarissa's other titled and more wealthy suitors, Quentin concocts a plan to trap her into marriage by compromising her at a masked ball (Quent is not very nice). Quentin's plan goes without a hitch until he's found (as planned) by members of the ton. To his surprise and utter dismay the passionate woman in his arms was not Clarissa at all but her plain, boring stepsister Jane.

I know that the forced marriage thing has been done a million times but this author somehow manages to bring an interesting spin to this tired plot. The hero is as nasty as they come (think Sebastian Verlaine in Patricia Gaffney's To Have and to Hold) who even goes so far as to rape the heroine on their wedding night. I know this is terrible but the author makes his transformation into an ideal and loving husband believable. By the end of the story I was head over heels for him. On the other hand, Jane is kindnes personified, her sweet but strong personality was overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of London's nobility. Once Quentin gets to see her in her natural setting,in the countryside among peasants and nature, his frozen heart is in great danger of being thawed by Jane's sweet smile.

My only quibble: I thought Jane should have made Quentin grovel and beg and plead a lot more for his evil deeds. Otherwise this book is a great read especially for those who are heartily sick of the dead corpses and evil villains that populate every other romance today. Highly recommended. :)

5 out of 5 stars A great book by a great author........2002-12-11

I read a review for this book when it was first published a year or so ago. The review was great, but I didn't read the book because I usually don't like plain Jane stories where the heroine's kindness outshines her lack of beauty so on and so forth. I picked up this book not remebering the review or the reason I didn't read it when it was first released. When I was far enough into the book to remeber,it was too late, I was hooked.
I loved the heroine Jane especially. She took a bad situation and made the best of it. As intended, the Hero was hard to like at first. The wonderful thing about Heather Cullman's books is that she can take a less then perfect person and make them into a hero or heroine. The transformation for me was very believable.
This was a great book with a great love story.

5 out of 5 stars Some of these people obviously read a different book than me.......2002-07-16

Couldn't put it down! This book was an absolute delight. Loved everything about it. A keeper!...

1 out of 5 stars Surely there are worse books out there somewhere?.......2002-06-28

I'm sure that I've read worse books, but I'm hard pressed to think of them. What's bad about this book? Perhaps the doormat heroine who is raped on her wedding night but continues to try to please her "caught" husband? Perhaps the self-centered slob she marries who has NO redeeming qualities then a sudden conversion to virtue? Perhaps the simplistic "simple" folk who live in the village and wait to be "saved" by the heroine? Or maybe it's all the short choppy sentences and superficial utterances of the author? My first and last Heather Cullman book. If you're literate, avoid this book.

The quaint little hamlet of Morgan's Creek was nestled snugly in the watchful shadow of the Castle on the hill. Together, they struck a pose that was fairy-tale perfect. But the Castle was Evil, an unbound nightmare that ran liquid with horrors so vile, even the bravest refused to speak of them. At the very heart of that Castle, concealed behind a labyrinth of constantly shifting passageways and hidden, unsuspected death, sat the cold-blue granite that was Aiden's Cauldron. It was this crucible that held the key to the mystery of the Castle --- and the only way out for those trapped in the valley below. Any attempt to wrest it from the Counterfeit-Illusionist who held it under his Evil tyranny, though, would require an equal mix of both courage and self-sacrifice.

This book has it all. Mr. Bolyog and Mr. Young really know how to tell a good story. This was a true page-turner for me. I always wanted to know what happened next. The action scenes are so easy to picture because they are described in such fine detail. Another great thing happening in this book is the character development. Throughout the story the characters are always growing, allowing the reader to learn more about each individual. I think that's what kept me up into the early hours of the morning reading this book. It's great and I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent adventure fantasy for all ages........1998-12-10

Although the basic plot of the book is similar to role-playing-games, the nuances and surprises raise it above many in the genre. The characters are believable, despite their chimerical circumstances. Even in the most deadly of situations, they retain their wit and charm. The descriptions are vivid, making you feel as if you are in the small town or surrounded by monsters yourself. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy or adventure.

I met Rick Young a week ago and hes real nice. he took over our language class and tought us stuff about the novel you wouldnt have thought of ever. like the Y-Bridge is the Why-bridge and the first words of the story told the plot of all three books and foreshadowed events in them.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Mr. Bolyog and Mr. Young.......2002-12-11

Thank you for creating such an enchanting world filled with magic, and challenge, and courage, and beauty, as well as insight into the elements of true leadership as the motives of Good and Evil are so clearly defined. Further, the completeness of your characters, each one unique and vibrant (even the nasty ones!), coupled with the complexity of the quest is gripping right from the outset. And the hidden clues that are masterfully placed throughout the Trilogy (so obvious only after you locate them!), hints of what happened in the story's past - and harbingers of what will happen in the future - are a reader's delight. It is the essence of master storytelling! Again, I say thank you.

All Christianity is, to some extent, idolatrous. Christian worship is a response to a worshiper's image of Jesus, and all images of Jesus fall short of his reality--in the same way that all biographies and portraits fail to depict a whole person. In Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, New Testament scholar Marcus Borg attempts to understand how popular images of Jesus connect Christians to their savior and isolate them from him. Borg writes about his own evolving ideas of who Jesus was, considers the scholarly and popular religious evolution of Jesus' public image, and investigates with special care the effects of Historical Jesus research on contemporary images of Jesus. Meeting Jesus Again is written in an affable, gracious, and unflinchingly honest voice. Borg's description of his own faith particularly exemplifies these qualities, and gives the reader a simultaneously safe and unsettling new perspective on the peasant from Galilee: "[T]he central issue of the Christian life is not believing in God or believing in the Bible," he writes. "Rather, the Christian life is about entering into a relationship with that to which the Christian tradition points, which may be spoken of as God, the risen, living Christ, or the Spirit. And a Christian is one who lives out his or her relationship to God within the framework of the Christian tradition." --Michael Joseph Gross

                      Book Description

Of the many recent books on the historical Jesus, none has explored what the latest biblical scholarship means for personal faith. Now, in Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg addresses the yearnings of those who want a fully contemporary faith that welcomes rather than oppresses our critical intelligence and openness to the best of historical scholarship. Borg shows how a rigorous examination of historical findings can lead to a new faith in Christ, one that is critical and, at the same time, sustaining.

"Believing in Jesus does not mean believing doctrines about him," Borg writes. "Rather, it means to give one's heart, one's self at its deepest level, to . . . the living Lord."

Drawing on his own journey from a naive, unquestioning belief in Christ through collegiate scepticism to a mature and contemporary Christian faith, Borg illustrates how an understanding of the historical Jesus can actually lead to a more authentic Christian life––one not rooted in creeds or dogma, but in a life of spiritual challenge, compassion, and community.

In straightforward, accessible prose, Borg looks at the major findings of modern Jesus scholarship from the perspective of faith, bringing alive the many levels of Jesus' character: spirit person, teacher of alternative wisdom, social prophet, and movement founder. He also reexamines the major stories of the Old Testament vital to an authentic understanding of Jesus, showing how an enriched understanding of these stories can uncover new truths and new pathways to faith.

For questioning believers, doubters, and reluctant unbelievers alike, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time frees our understanding of Jesus' life and message from popular misconceptions and outlines the way to a sound and contemporary faith: "For ultimately, Jesus is not simply a figure of the past, but a figure of the present. Meeting that Jesus––the living one who comes to us even now––will be like meeting Jesus again for the first time."

Having been raised in a conservative Lutheran denomination, I found that Borg's chapter on his experience of Jesus in the Lutheran Church resonated with mine. His distinction between the pre-Easter and post-Easter Jesus was a new view for me as is his vision of Jesus as a "spirit person." Most Christians have turned Jesus into an idol to be worshipped. This distances him from us rather than bringing us close to him in the kind of union he had with "Abba," the God of Abraham, Moses and the prophets.
Borg explains words used over the centuries that are poorly understood by ordinary people--grace, salvation and prayer. He explains how the historical Jesus became associated with the second person of the Holy Trinity by early Christians rather than "the face of God." This book is a must for anyone interested in the development of Christology and soteriology over time.

This book is written by a member of the Jesus Seminar. Check wikipedia about them. Should you believe a guy who votes with beads to figure out if something could be true. Let me vote with a bead to see if his book is true! This is a terrible book. Compare his statements with the Bible and a good concordance. I did and his errors are revealed. What happens to most people when they go to college: if what you believed was not real to you, you wont believe it after college. Sad that we should have to pay to read lies.

Like the author, I have traveled the agnostic-atheist-confused path in my spirituality-seeking. Marcus Borg has not only traveled the path, but was able to take notes along the way. A refreshing and renewing source of help for followers of Jesus.
