3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The Justice League and the Avengers in one of those inter company crossover things that everybody had wanted to see for a long time, it seems. Lots of chasing around the cosmos for very bits and pieces to ultimately stop a big bad guy from doing very bad things. There is also a question of power levels at work, here.

4 out of 5 stars The art really sells this one........2007-06-07

A lifetime in the making, this was the dream project for George Perez - one of comics' giants. JLA/Avengers is bound to disappoint someone - Kurt Busiek is not my favorite writer and Perez is popular but still a polarizing artist. If the dialogue is often overwrought, it hits the nail on the head when the timelines start to shift and we start to see the different eras intersect like only a fanboy could dream of. Perez is known for giant spreads and this large format hardcover really lets that work shine. Not all of the pencils for the characters work (the She-Hulk's facial features in particular wash out noticeably) but taken as a whole, this is a must-have for die-hard fans of either/both teams. (It would however, be nice if Marvel & DC would put out an AFFORDABLE softcover trade now that they've made their money. It's cheaper to buy up the original miniseries than to get this edition!)

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-04-06

One of the first stories to get me buying comics properly, I was kin da casual before this story, this is so rich! And now to have it in deluxe edition, nice!! Now I have around 350 comics and graphic novels!!

5 out of 5 stars It's The Price.......2006-12-24

This is a reason I have refused to return to comic collecting on any large basis. I have the softcover magazines of this (JLA/AVENGERS) series, but $75.00 for a hardcover? Someone at both companies has got to be freakin' kidding. Even if I were single, had plenty of disposable income, I wouldn't pay this much for a hardcover like this. Are Marvel and DC trying to PREVENT fans from buying collections? The recent ETERNALS hardcover from Marvel is also priced like this -- I can hear my wife now .. "You spent WHAT?" Hey, I loved the book, but not at $75.00!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good but, not great.!.......2006-11-05

Wow! This was years in the making and I expected the heavens to move and mountains to crumble, and all I got was a pretty good category 2 hurricane. The art was top notch and the writing was very good but, I expected more from the plot. The characters for the most part were dead on but, the fight between Thor and Superman was bogus! Let me correct that. The fight was good but the outcome sucked! All in all a very good read and a beautiful book to own. Well worth the money.

    Setting: London, 1839
    Sensuality: 9

Bow Street runner Nick Gentry is a complex man with a dark and tortured history, and beautiful Charlotte Howard is a woman running from her past. Neither Nick or Charlotte are wholly what they seem, for each have secrets too painful to reveal, and each has chosen to hide behind a false identity. Once they're drawn into each other's worlds, they're forced to face difficult truths and are compelled to acknowledge the passion that burns between them. For Charlotte, "the challenge of taming him, matching his powerful will with her own, was too tempting to resist." For Nick, "if he could not have her, this endless feeling of being hungry, unsatisfied, cold, would never leave him." But will their love be enough to defeat the obsessed nobleman who covets Charlotte and the thirst for danger that tempts Nick, or is their future together doomed by the pain of their past?

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas has another winner on her hands with this follow-up to Lady Sophia's Lover. Fans and new readers alike will love the fast-paced plot, compelling characters, high-octane sensuality, and the well-drawn English setting. --Lois Faye Dyer

    Book Description

What is the price of love?

Nick Gentry is reputed to be the most skillful lover in all England. Known for solving delicate situations, he is hired to seek out Miss Charlotte Howard. He believes his mission will be easily accomplished -- but that was before he met the lady in question.

For instead of a willful female, he discovers one in desperate circumstances, hiding from a man who would destroy her very soul. So Nick shockingly offers her a very different kind of proposition -- one he has never offered before.

He asks her to be his bride.

And he knows that this will be much more than a union in name only. For he senses what Charlotte does not yet know -- that her appetite for sensuality matches his own. But what Nick learns surprises him. For while London's most notorious lover might claim Charlotte's body, he quickly discovers it will take much more than passion to win her love.

    5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.......2007-08-24

I've had this book for sometime and just haven't gotten around to reading it, but the other rainy afternoon I had nothing to do or read so I picked it up, was instantly hooked, and spent the rest of the day reading until I finished. It was really well written and just flowed and was compelling even though the plot was relatively basic.

Nick was a great hero. Unlike most of the tortured heros I've encountered, he had a legitimate reason to be tortured and his past wasn't the basis of the story. Lottie was also great because she wasn't too anything, too demanding, too self-conscious, too nice; she was just perfectly lovable.

I haven't read the other Bow Street Runners books, but this one was so good, it made me go the library and get them. The only thing I can add to convey how much I enjoyed this book is the time I spent reading it went really quickly and I was disappointed there wasn't more. I'm glad I own it.

4 out of 5 stars Steamy, steamy, steamy!.......2007-05-05

Worth Any Price by Lisa Kleypas plunges into the sensual realm immediately, with the prologue, and continues for the entirety of the novel. The actual story begins with Nick Gentry searching for Charlotte, a missing girl who has run away from an impending marriage to the insane Lord Radnor. Gentry has been hired by Radnor to bring back his bride, but when Nick discovers Charlotte, he also discovers a need to possess her himself. Facing a dilemma without many tolerable solutions, Charlotte decides to accept Nick's marriage proposal because she can't deny the attraction, and she senses he alone would be able to protect her from Radnor. I liked this novel and thought it was well done; I enjoyed reading about Nick Gentry's transformation both with his identity and his guarded heart. My only warning to the reader - the sensuality is very steamy and not for the faint of heart!

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2007-04-18

Loved this novel. I have reread parts of it several times. One of the best things about Lisa Kleypas is that she creates male characters that do all the romantic things we wish men would do in real life. You can really imagine Lottie and Nick as real people. She makes it very easy to get lost in the love she creates between them. Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars COMPELLING and SENSUAL.......2006-12-09

As a long time fan of Lisa Kleypas, I found this to be the best of her books.

I was not fond of Nick Gentry, who first appears in "Lady Sophia's Lover", however I bought the book on the strength of Kleypas's past works. I was amazed to find myself completely mesmerized! I could not put it down!

In what is surely her most compelling tale, Nick Gentry is a deep, dark character who finds new life in his love for his wife.

Sensual and incredibly romantic, this books gave me chills as the two main characters find each other through the early days of their unlikely marriage.

Footnote: the setting of their meeting becomes the central location for her next series, "the wallflower brides".

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of the series........2005-06-10

In Book 8 there is a lot of wrapping up going on. Many threads regarding Roxane and Jihan are closed (or are they?). Tempus returns to Sanctuary and is reunited with Niko as his partner.

The Thieves World books are always at their best when they are slowly building to a climax using the small stories of the Maze and palace that the various writers do so well. The relay format does not work as well at crafting a single climax point. The result is not bad, exactly, but it reads like a more typical fantasy series installment. One of the nice thing about Thieves World at its best is that it does not read like that at all. There were also some very nice plot points opened up in Book 7 that are completely ignored here-- a little bit of continuity with some of those elements would have been nice.

Lynn Abbey, Janet Morris and C.J. Cherryh were the writers in book 8. As you can imagine, begin at the beginning and not here if you have not read any of the books before.

                Book Description

Odessa—founded by Catherine the Great, who insisted that her port on the Black Sea be named in the feminine—earned its reputation for vibrancy. Sophisticated yet untamed, lively but dangerous, Russia's warm water port for trade flirted coquettishly with the West. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the city had become a volatile modern metropolis with an ethnically diverse population and a growing middle class. Known as the "little Paris" of the tsarist empire, Odessa was distinctly un-Russian in manner and disposition and strikingly unlike other imperial cities.

Tales of Old Odessa reveals the inner life of this remarkable city in the years before World War I from the perspective of the people who lived there. How did Odessans understand the city and their place in it? What cultural influences flavored their sensibilities and shaped their communities? What did modernization mean in Odessa? To answer such questions, historian Roshanna Sylvester turns to popular periodicals and newspapers, which reported on everything from acid-throwing women to villainous "gentlemen-vampires" to a rampaging elephant whose "conviction" and eventual execution formed the basis of a civic epic.

Sylvester uses stories from the popular press not only to bring old Odessa to life but also to analyze broader issues, such as the relationships between self and society, the anxieties provoked by urbanization, the uses of public spaces, and the contests for social dominance in a multicultural environment. Readers interested in urban culture, social history, the Jewish experience, and modern Russia will gain valuable insights from this engaging account of a city that continues to fascinate.

                  Book Description

Need a tavern in a hurry? An inn? An alchemist? A conspiracy? How about a Thieves' Guild? How about an entire Thieves' Quarter? From The Game Mechanics (Artifacts of the Ages and the Modern Player's Companion) comes the first in a series of books detailing the people, places, and plots of the fantasy city of Liberty: the Thieves' Quarter, where life is cheap, and only the bravest-or most foolhardy-venture out alone at night. Modular in design, the Thieves' Quarter can be adapted wholesale to any city in any fantasy campaign, or Gamemasters can cherry-pick whatever they need, whenever they need it. With two dozen lushly-created maps by master cartographer Christopher West, dozens of fully-developed NPCs, and extensive encounter tables loaded with adventure hooks, the Thieves' Quarter is a ready-made mini-setting designed to be dropped into nearly any d20 fantasy campaign at a moment's notice. Future City Quarters volumes will include the Temple Quarter, the Arcane Quarter, the Nobles' Quarter, and the Mercenaries' Quarter.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars Simply excellent!.......2004-07-01

Adventure ideas are flying thick and furious now that I've got Thieves' Quarter. If you want to add a an entire quarter, a thieves' guild, or just a shop, this book is written from the top down to be inserted modularly into any campaign.

One touch that I'm particularly enjoying is the Allies and Enemies entry for each NPC. The web of relationships is quite complex and inspiring. Every time I introduce an NPC, there are instantly a couple other characters that are involved. Combined with the encounter hooks listed in the back, it's very easy to DM with this book.

                  Among the attractions are:
                  - The Chaos Pit, an underground gladiatorial arena
                  - Maegrin's Marvelous Menagerie, a fantastical zoo
                  - Kunarath Syndicate, crimelords moving in from another city
                  - ale & whores!
                  - The Thieves' Guild, their headquarters and officers
                  - A wererat pack that wants to do the regular wererat thing
                  - Soot Street, a tunnel network under the city
                  - LOTS more!

The maps are very nice, and the drawings are done in a fun, slightly cartoony style.

                  It's worth the admission price.

5 out of 5 stars A classic of the FF series and mythology. A must have!.......1999-09-26

This fifth title in the series, along with Warlock of Firetop Mountain(1), Forest of Doom(3) and Deathtrap Dungeon(6), helps form the bedrock of the Fighting Fantasy world of Allansia. The sense of being in a wild, dangerous, exotic city filled with adventure is very well described by Livingstone. One cool aspect is that many later books in the series refer to Port Blacksand and it's dark denizens in passing. It gives a nice sense of continuity and familiarity with the FF world to be able to say, 'Yeah, I know. I've been there.'

Anyway, this is a must-have if you really want to have a good sense of the world-building that Livingstone and Jackson were doing with this series. Plus it's just a crackling good adventure!

5 out of 5 stars Great book in a good series.......1998-10-28

I was about elleven when i read this book. It took me a while because I always had to look up words in the vocabulary! But that reading experience was awsome, up there with the Lord of the Rings. It is very hard and challenging too, not one of these walk-through Fighting Fantasy. Give it a try!

                            Book Description

John and Meg Bains are impressed by Toronto when they first arrive there in 1875: its long boardwalks, tall hotels, elegant shops and fancy restaurants. Not that they can afford to stay in a hotel or eat in a restaurant.

Canada is suffering from a Depression in the 1870s, and it hits the Bains hard. They try desperately to raise the money to get back to their mother and home in Ottawa, but work is hard to find. John and Meg get jobs selling the Globe newspaper on the streets, but the competition is fierce. Soon John starts hanging out with some very tough street kids and some equally unpleasant adults. He's pressured into a gang of burglars and is caught by the police. Things look very dark for the Bains, and their only chance for freedom is if John can recover the stolen loot from its hiding place on Toronto Island.

Set against the gritty background of a big, 19th century Canadian city, Harbour Thieves is the story of the great difficulties one family faces to stay together, and how they overcome them.

This is the fifth book in the Bains series of historical novels, well-researched, action-filled narratives following the travels of one family across Canada--from Newfoundland to Alberta-- in search of a better life during the hard times of the 1870s.

                            5 out of 5 stars Biased opinion.......2007-08-11

I am an unabashed fan of Frederick Buechner. His use of stories enforces my personal conviction that doctine preached is less effective than Christ lived...inside or outside the church. I love his style and he is one of "those" three or four that I wish I could share a meal with and literally watch him tell his stories.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets in the dark.......2007-07-03

Frederick Buechner is a warm, loving, witty, intellectual whom I greatly admire. After reading this book I have grown even fonder of him and I like to think grown in my faith a great deal too. It was my church service every morning. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, essential collection of sermons.......2007-03-28

Frederick Buechner is an extremely honest and emotional preacher and this is a book of over thirty of his best sermons. It is easy to identify with his readable, inspiring and imaginative sermons. Buechner is optimistic and never boring--he speaks of a gospel of love that invites to confront and continue to engage our doubts; he speaks of a gospel that isn't overly literal but speaks truth in stories and emotion. He finds ways to engage his audience and certainly these ways are not lost on the page. Surely, a book for every Christain to have, a guide for the path.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets in the Dark: A Life in Sermons.......2007-02-17

I believe that this collection of sermons by Fredrerick Buechner is profoundly rich in sensitivity and wisdom, proclaiming without a hint of judgment and with authentic humility and integrity, the good and reassuring news of God's mysterious and redeeming presence in this world, including to believers, non-believers, non-believers-who-wish-they-could believe, and the indifferent.

5 out of 5 stars An easy and inspiring read........2006-08-01

Frederick Buechner has great style, excellent writing and super content. I opened it and immediately became became engrossed.
