Book Description

When Larry McMurtry's classic novel of the post-World War II era was originally published in 1961, it created a sensation in Texas literary circles. Never before had a writer portrayed the contemporary West in conflict with the Old West in such stark, realistic, unsentimental ways.

Horseman, Pass By, on which the film Hud is based, tells the story of Homer Bannon, an old-time cattleman who epitomizes the frontier values of honesty and decency, and Hud, his unscrupulous stepson. Caught in the middle is the narrator, Homer's young grandson, Lonnie, who is as much drawn to his grandfather's strength of character as he is to Hud's hedonism and materialism. Memorable characters, powerful themes, and illuminating detail make Horseman, Pass By vintage McMurtry.

5 out of 5 stars How The West Was Lost.......2007-06-27

This great , first novel by Mr. McMurtry was the basis for the movie HUD. McMurtry captures the passing of the "Old West". The grandfather, Homer Bannon, is trying to hang on to a dying way of life. His stepson Hud is trying to force his will onto Homer. Lonnie, Homer's grandson, is caught in the middle. Mr. McMurtry paints the western landscape in manner that few writers can approach. If you have read Mr. McMurtry's later work, I encourage you to go back and pick up this slim gem of a book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first step.......2005-08-31

McMurtry's first novel, it's a tough, nostalgic look at a cattle ranching family in the panhandle of Texas in the early 1950s. Lonnie Bannon narrates the story mainly of his grandfather, a tough old coot who owns the ranch and Hud, his wild half-brother. A disease breaks out with their cattle that forces them to slaughter the herd; the results have a devastating effect on both characters. Written before McMurtry's style took on the broad Dickensian humor of his later work, he manages to capture the place and the people very well and truthfully. A great start to a most illustrious career. [The movie HUD came from this book.]

4 out of 5 stars Excellent First Novel.......2005-08-28

I read this book many years ago after seeing the movie version, Hud, with Paul Newman. As others have noted there are some major differences between the book and film. McMurtry's early books, like this one, are so beautiful and evocative of a time and place. When I try to read the more recent books they seem flat and contrived. It is almost like reading two different writers. The sad thing is that he seems to be getting worse rather than better. Horseman Pass By, Leaving Cheyenne, and The Last Picture Show are his best work. They are all beautifully done and well worth reading.

Review
Review =The book horseman it is about a kid, who is around 14 years old, that grew up in Texas. He ran in to some problems between some people and others he was really close to. I like this book because I find old western books interesting. I liked everything, and I did not dislike anything. It is a good book and you should read it. The book has some cool adventures. Good book.

5 out of 5 stars Not the movie, but equally good. . ........2004-05-18

This was Larry McMurtry's first novel, published in 1961, long before "Lonesome Dove." It's also his first of several books set in and around the small Texas town of Thalia. The story was quickly transformed into a Paul Newman film "Hud" in 1963, which is the version of the story most people know. In spirit, the two stories are similar - they are both anti-westerns, in which code of the West is subverted and corrupted by failure of moral character.

But McMurtry's novel tells a story with a darker vision. At the center is Lonnie, the teenager growing up on his grandfather's ranch, and it's through his eyes that we see the cold, self-serving indifference of his uncle Hud. Still a boy, unschooled in much of anything besides the dawn-to-dusk labor of ranch work, Lonnie is no moral center, following his grandfather's example. In many ways, he accepts Hud's violent behavior, his disrespect for the old man, and his ruthless use of women as a kind of norm. In the end, as he leaves the ranch, he takes the first steps toward a life that may well be no more rewarding or purposeful than that of the regretful hired hand Jesse, who gets too drunk to ride his cutting horse in the rodeo.

To streamline the story, the film has scaled back or eliminated interesting key characters like Jesse, another ranch hand Lonzo, a neighbor Hank, and a friend Hermy, who is badly injured trying to ride a bull. Also, by casting a white woman in the role of the black cook Halmea (Patricia Neal's Alma), the film sidesteps a racial dimension that the novel brings to the story.

So for readers who know and like the film, this is a very different telling of the story and well worth reading. As usual in McMurtry's early novels, there is a richly detailed capturing of character, speech, and setting. He knows these people inside and out, how they think, talk, and behave. He also totally deromanticizes ranch work, representing it as mercilessly hot, dusty, and exhausting. The small-town rodeo, with its drinking, womanizing cowboys, fares little better. I heartily recommend this novel for anyone interested in the rural West and ranching, along with McMurtry's more melancholy but less bleak "Leaving Cheyenne."

5 out of 5 stars A Homerun! Ten Stars! If You Read One Time Travel Book, READ This One!.......2006-04-22

I have read three of Tess Mallory's books and liked each of them to the extent I couldn't put them down. Highland Dream is hilarious and such a wonderful story of Jix saving Samantha from marrying a guy who is just after her money. Jix kidnaps Sam and takes her to Scotland where they meet Jamie, whom Jix thinks is the man Sam is to marry. Jix had dreams that have shown her the future.
They go back in time and the story spins into the most entertaining time travel book I have ever read. I laughed out loud several times as well as shed a tear or two for Jix.
Jix proves to be a brave, steadfast lady who wins the hearts and trust of her friend and the Scottish friends they make.
Every bookstore should have Tess Mallory's books on their shelves. She would be a big time seller. The best Time Travel writer in America!

2 out of 5 stars Jix spoils an otherwise good book...........2006-01-13

short and sweet-Jix's antics and dialog are ditzy and annoying to the point of headache forming. What started as cute quickly turned funky.
Jix is spunky-but not without sacrificing a good deal of common sense! For example-she "kidnaps" her best friend by getting her on a plane under false pretenses, so she'll miss her wedding, doesn't truly explain why-then is surprised when her friend is so mad at her?!?

I'll try another of this author's book, but I'd say skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars excellent writer.......2005-08-16

Tess Mallory really out-did herself on her trilogy on time-travel to the Scottish Highlands. From the very first page the stories grab your attention and never lets go. I got up very early in the mornings and read until I finished each book at night. If there was a rating higher than 5, I would rate the book at least a 10.

5 out of 5 stars Highland Romp Worth 10 stars!!!.......2001-11-28

Hysterical romp through time! I loved this story! I was laughing the entire time and wished it hadn't ended! I loved the characters of Jix and Jamie, they were funny and real. Definately one of my favorites this year!

~Jix Ferguson was determined to get her best friend Sam out of an impending wedding even if she had to kidnap her and take her to Scotland! After tricking her into the flight, Sam and Jix aren't getting along and end up stranded in Scotland in the rain after their rental car breaks down miles from the castle they were to stay for the weekend! If that isn't the worst part, Jix is convinced Sam's 'future love' is residing in Scotland they just met him standing in the doorway!

Jamie MacGregor opens the door to his uncle's castle estate that is well over 300 years old to find two bedraggled women standing in the doorway, and the redhead has fallen down on her face! When their eyes meet, sparks fly immediately. Jamie is not prepared for how he feels.
Another problem arises when Jamie shows the girls his ansestral sword and they begin to argue heatedly over it when they find themselves hurled back in time, about 300 years to seventeenth century Scotland where the MacGregor clan are outlawed by the King!

Now all Jix will have to do is marry the Clan's son Griffon and Jamie must save the clan, but all in all, it's not too hard, especially when she sings verses of 'I Will Survive' and they find themselves running for their lives! Oh yeah, and they need to find the sword and Sam before they can go home! Can they 'survive'? Will Jix be able to keep her hands off the gorgeous Scot long enough to convince Sam he was meant for her? Will Sam forgive her for kidnapping and throwing her back in time to a waring Scotland? Will Jamie fall for Jix or will he find his heart meant for Sam as in Jix's dream?

I was on the floor with this one! I loved it! Something to brighten anyone's day! A real laugh and well worth the money! And by the way, Jamie is hot ;)

3 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as I had hoped........2001-11-04

When I first read the back of this book I thought "wow this sounds like a great book." I even thought that in the beginning because it starts off with a lot of humor and I thought the heroine and hero were going to be great adversaries for a while and then finally admit thier love for each other. That didn't happen. I liked the Hero, Jamie, but I found Jix, who is the supposedly impish heroine, a bore most of the time. I actually found the secondary characters of Griffin and Sam were more interesting. It was a good book but it didn't live up to its potential.

                          Book Description

For most of his life, Robert Kennedy stood in the shadow cast by his older brother, John; only after President Kennedy's assassination did the public gain a complete sense of Robert ("Bobby," we called him) as a committed advocate for social justice and a savvy politician in his own right. In this comprehensive biography, James W. Hilty offers a detailed and nuanced account of how Robert was transformed from a seemingly unpromising youngster, unlikely to match the accomplishments of his older brothers, to the forceful man who ran "the family business," orchestrating the Kennedy quest for political power.

The centerpiece of this book is the remarkable political partnership that formed between Robert and John. As the manager of John's political campaigns, Robert proved himself "hard as nails" (in his father's admiring words), relentless in securing his brother's victory and unforgiving in overseeing his brother's presidency. Hilty marshals a great deal of evidence to show that while they did not always see eye to eye—Lyndon Johnson's selection as John's running mate being a notable disagreement—they discussed virtually every issue, gauging the likely political effects of every position. Robert was so close to the President that insiders called him "number one and a-half"; their consultations were so intimate that they spoke in a kind of code, barely intelligible to those around them. In Hilty's evocative but unsentimental recounting of the politcal crises of the Kennedy Administration, Robert and John prove to have been more calculating and astute leaders than today's pundits allow. Theirs was a partnership that was unprecedented and, thanks to an act signed into law by Lyndon Johnson, is never to be equaled.

I liked this book very much. It's not like a biography of RFK, but it is a biography of RFK's career in politics. This book is very detailed, so grab a pen and paper because its so indepth.

5 out of 5 stars Hilty brings to life force behind Kennedy legacy.......2001-07-25

Professor Hilty provides an excellent study and examination of Bobby Kennedy. Though this is an enormously hefty read. For those new to Bobby Kennedy, a more manageable introduction might be a rather recent book called Robert F. Kennedy: A Spiritual Biography by Konstantine Sidorenko. Though in contrast to Hilty's (brilliant but somewhat unwieldy) tome, this slim short form biography covers Kennedy and his life in great depth and the book's brevity will not disappoint serious biography readers. It is particularly an excellent book to take up before plunging in to Hilty's.

                          4 out of 5 stars A GOOD, OBJECTIVE OVERVIEW.......2000-08-04

It is impossible to write about Robert Kennedy in adult life without writing about his brother, John Kennedy. Hilty does a very thorough job of portraying Robert Kennedy, the dedicated, hard working, determined brother, warts in all in a fair and impartial way. Throughout this book, one sees the "metamorphosis" of Robert Kennedy. He is the man who works behind the scenes, protecting his brother's interests to his maximum extent. He is the man who pushes his brother forward while sublimating his own interests, needs and identity. It is only in the tragic aftermath of the President's death does Robert Kennedy, in full adult form emerge -- the man who immersed himself in classical literature, the man who became a personal crusader for civil rights related issues, the man who made it his business to know minorities and persons living in poverty. It is during the last nearly half-decade of his life that the full face of Robert Kennedy is shown to his constituents -- the man who doggedly pursued Teamsters and Mafiosi in the 1950s takes that same dogged persistence to the political arena where he runs on his own right. He is a voice for the disenfranchised, a voice for those who share his vision. He was a man who provided hope during a very turbulent period in history marked by war and national violence. It is the opinion of this reviewer that Robert Kennedy is certainly the more interesting of the brothers. His personal, political and personality development is very interesting to watch and track. He was certainly a man who came across as very sincere in his efforts and one cannot help wondering what the outcome today would be had this man lived.

This is a book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF A GOOD MAN.......2000-08-03

Robert Kennedy was better than a great man. He was a good man and his track record in minority work certainly underscores this point. I have always believed he was sincere in his efforts and that he truly cared about people. He was of an usual caliber and his loss was certainly one that was keenly felt. I can to this very day remember those two horrendous days in June when he was assassinated and later died. It was the first death that ever affected me personally. I was then a child and I remember saying that "I hate the man who shot Senator Kennedy! I hate him and I hope they throw him in jail forever and I wish Rosey Grier had broken his [the assassin's] head!" My mother gave me some sound advice that I remember today. Her exact words to me on June 6, 1968 were, "Senator Kennedy would not want you to hate anyone. Instead of hating the assassin, pray instead for an end to violence and pray for his family." It took me some time before I was able to do that, and I am glad to be able to say today that I can. Over the years, I have prayed for David, the son who watched his own father die on television and was so consumed with his own grief that he, too, became a casualty. One of my all time favorite stories about Robert Kennedy was his success in climbing Mt. Kennedy in Canada in March of 1965. He was a man whom many described as acrophobic, yet he was able to table his terror and climb that mountain out of love for his brother. (I think the mountain should have been named after ROBERT Kennedy -- he claimed it). He wisely gave credit where credit was due upon reaching the top of that mountain -- he made the Sign of the Cross. I just love this story so much that I have told it before the Toastmasters. I think it is very inspiring and just underscores the character, determination and hard work of a man who worked hard to meet personal goals. Robert Kennedy was in my eyes a success story. I was a history major and he was the subject of my senior project. It was one of the few writing assignments I ever enjoyed and I did well. Robert Kennedy was a man who not only marked sociopolitical milestones in his lifetime. He marked personal milestones in the lives of those who were interested in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Great American, great book........2000-01-22

Robert F. Kennedy was an extraordinary man: former investigator, campaign manager for his brother, Attorney General, United States Senator. His speech to the 1964 Democratic Convention was one the most eloquent speeches ever given. His campaign for the Presidency in 1968 ended with one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in American history when an assassin killed him after winning the California primary.

For myself, RFK represents the better part of politics- the noble spirit and the sense of purpose than the American way of life seems to have lost since his death. People can and should be better to one another, Bobby argued. Government should help the people, he said, but only if those people could help themselves. As a Democrat, I admire Bobby's argument for help, partnership and responsibility between the people and their government.

Professor Hilty has done an excellent job. There are things about Bobby that are difficult to reconcile- why he worked for McCarthy is a good question -and Professor Hilty does a wonderful job writing about them and explaining them. He should be congradulated. I, for one, cannot wait for his next volume about RFK's life.

                            Book Description

In Your God Is Too Small, J. B. Phillips explains that the trouble facing many of us today is that we have not found a God big enough for our modern needs. In a world where our experience of life has grown in myriad directions, and our mental horizons have been expanded to the point of bewilderment by world events and scientific discoveries, our ideas of God have remained largely static. It is nearly impossible, Phillips argues, for an adult to worship the conception of God that exists in the mind of a child of Sunday-school age, the "God-in-a-box" notion, limiting God to such inadequate conceptions as "Resident Policeman," "Grand Old Man," "Meek-and-Mild," and "Managing Director." As a result of these insufficient ideas of God, many people live with an inner dissatisfaction, without any faith at all.

Your God Is Too Small explores the ways in which we can find a truly meaningful and constructive God for ourselves, big enough to account for our current experience of life and big enough to command our highest admiration and respect.

This is one of those books that is worth reading and re-reading. What a difference it makes to see God as He really IS instead of the "micro" version of our own making.

I picked up this book (I confess, induced by a fire sale price), hoping to see some of the truly disturbing attitudes among contemporary Christian addressed. Too bad, it turned out to be a light-weight attack on simple, modest, I should say, "God reductions". It's OK, but it's hardly bold. All in all, it's plainly written, and it's feather light. It's also obnoxiously pretentious, as when affirming, without fear of ridicule, that (I am paraphrasing, but I'm not distorting) kind, good, compassionate behavior is only to be found among peoples of Christian tradition... Oh, me, oh my! Too bad that the same could be said (with a little stretch of the truth, but less than Phillips's) of barbaric, murderous, butchering intolerant behavior... (yes, horrendous massacres have been perpetrated by men from all religions and places, but let's keep the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Persecutions, the massacres of the natives in all colonial enterprises, as well as the pogroms, the Holocaust, and what not very, very firmly in fromt of us when daring to talk about "Chrisianity" and "human compassion" in the same sentence). Honestly, I was hoping for a lesson in humility, as in realizing that a "God" that takes sides in wars, or has (you put in your preferred blessed nationality or group) as "His" only trusts, or who is so small that it's easy for you to tell what "He wants" (??!!) is a concoction with dubious goals. Yes, even one who would have only white western people be decent and humane looks exceedingly minute.

Originally published in 1952, this book is as up to date as tomorrow. For many years, I have observed the truth of the statement that we create God in our own image, resulting in an anemic deity no more wise or powerful than we are, and certainly incapable of creation, maintenance, or salvation. Phillips clearly identifies the source of the powerless god that we humans produce when we make the mistake of beginning with ourselves as a paradigm for holiness.

This book was recommended to me by a couple of folks and once I began reading I understood why: it's simple, pithy and a thoughtful read. I read it slowly so I could ponder each point of interest. I can truly say my God got bigger by the time I finished reading this book. And that's a Good Thing.
