5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Achievement - T. Weck.......2007-06-08

I admire a spellbinding story where the characters are real, their choices and dilemmas have a grab that keeps you absorbed by their story. Then you add to this a complete understaning of the settings, the profession, the way people behave in the wilderness West, and it becomes an insight into a vanishing breed as an extra bonus beyond being a great story. The prose is as good as it gets - it often has a poetic quality. This book should be a best-seller: that is the bottom line, plain and simple.

4 out of 5 stars High Country.......2007-04-10

Great book, hard read, must find a place that has no noise, then you will get through, you will enjoy it. Sound like a prop from a college wrote it.
Over all I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars High Praise and A Higher Recommendation.......2007-01-28

Read this. It will stay with you. And it will probably lead you to check internet sites for pack trips into the mountains of western Montana and the Sierras of California so that you can experience what the novel describes and visit with the characters even more closely.

I loved this. One of my favorite reads of the last year. It communicates a life ethic that is 180 degrees from the culturally promoted one of contemporary American life. The persons you meet within its pages will awaken memories of folks from the margins of your life.

I can't say enough good things. It deserves to reach a wide audience. Make sure you've got plenty of time to give to this novel because you'll find you want to keep going and going till you've reached camp.

5 out of 5 stars High Country a winner.......2007-01-05

Great book if you love the mountains and enjoy escaping into a great story line with wonderful descriptions of the life of a packer in the mountains. I could not put the book down!

5 out of 5 stars a quiet strength.......2006-07-03

It's been 50 years since I last went on a packing trip (in the
Wyoming Bighorns) and Wyman's novel brings back many pleasant
memories. This is not an "action" novel, nor is it dramatic in
the usual sense of that word. It is a novel about a man who
coexits with nature--a kind of mutual respect rather than a
battle. Introspection and inner strength are the key words here.
Ty Hardin has relationships with people to be sure, and these are
important to him, but it is his relationship to the mountains and
the wilderness which is the crucial point. There are dramatic
moments--a lot of them--but in the high mountains of Montana and
California these are natural and expected (e.g. you are going
to have bad weather fronts moving in).

The writing is moving and very satisfying, and come from the
heart of someone who has lived the life that Ty Hardin does.
Packing is an unusual subject for a novel, but suddenly we have
two at the same time--High Country and Brumfield's Across the
High Lonesome--and both are excellent reading.

The unmarried Anne Todd, a wonderful secretary as well as a devoted bedside nurse to her decrepit mother, is an archetypal Thirkell heroine: plucky, determined, resourceful, but acutely aware that being safely married would be a better alternative. The current resurgence of interest of Thirkell, several of whose 40-odd novels of life in imaginary "Barsetshire" before World War II are being reissued, has awakened a nostalgia for the sharp glittering surfaces of her work. High Rising is Thirkell at her warm, easygoing best.

        Book Description

High Rising introduces one of Thirkell's most beloved characters, Laura Morland, novel-writing widow and mother of four. Laura receives a marriage proposal from her publisher, who really loves the daughter of Laura's neighbor.

The cozy world of England before, during, and after World War II is explored with a sure hand by Angela Thirkell. That interesting, amusing, and safe world makes the reader feel good about our turbulent world.
All's right with Thirkell's English world!!

5 out of 5 stars A light, high rising, amusing little English soufflé........2004-07-03

It is good to see Angela Thirkell's light novels once more receiving attention, especially in the USA. "High Rising" is one of her first novels, dating from 1933. There were many English novelists in the 1930s who mined the traditionally English vein of gentle parody, graceful writing, mild absurdity, and class distinction. Much handsomer than most of them, and exhibiting the influence of Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope, Angela Thirkell peopled her novels with descendants of characters found in the latter's Barsetshire novels.

If that gives an idea of the flavor and style that might be enjoyed in her books, I can add that this one chronicles the dizzy doings of Laura Morland, a novelists, who juggles the demands of four sons, her publisher, her secretary, her formidable maid Stoker, and a friend George Knox whom most think should be more than a friend to her. The custom of "coming to tea" sets them all interacting. Watch for the number of verbs Angela Thirkell can employ - from plunge, to insinuate - to describe how characters can enter a room.

        5 out of 5 stars A Long-forgotten Treasure Returns!.......2002-07-27

The divine Angela Thirkell, to my mind a latter-day Jane Austen, wrote her simply wonderful novels about upper-class village life in pre-war England, in a series of 40 or so novels that are simply irresistable. Her plots captured a time, a mind-set, and a way of life that is long gone, and in fact, her later novels, set just after the war, already reflected a desperate nostalgia for a never-to-return past.

Never mind, though, because "High Rising," one of the earliest of Thirkell's series, is a delight you won't soon forget. The plot centers, as always, on a blithering author whose high-piled hair is continually in disarray, often spewing hairpins at the most inappropriate of times. A widow, she has raised several strapping sons, and is now engaged in trying to educate her youngest, the irrepressible and impossibly boring 8-year-old, Tony. To do so, she must churn out novels, and to that end, she employs a secretary named Anne Todd. And so the plot begins.

Anne is a selfless creature who uncomplainingly cares for her ailing elderly mother, a task that is draining her almost to illness. But plucky pre-war Britishers of a certain class never complained, and neither does Anne. The plot thickens when a truly horrid gold-digger appears to become secretary to another author, and proceeds to wreak terrible havoc on this close-knit society. She is truly an "incubus," which becomes her secret nickname.

So. What will become of the incubus? Will she succeed in her nefarious plot to marry wealthy Geoffrey, a scholarly author who doesn't have a clue? If so, what of Geoffrey's teenaged daughter? Who will mind the dogs? Will High Rising (Tony's prep school) survive yet another class of noxious boys? Will the good village doctor, besotted by Anne, be successful in his gentlemanly courtship?

And most of all...can anyone resist this book??

5 out of 5 stars Chane and Zane.......2007-04-04

I stumbled across this series some time ago. It is a wonderful story about a blended family not just in ethnicity but by adoption as well. Linda Howard can tell a story as well as anyone but she keeps you interested where you simply can't put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story very well told by Howard.......2007-03-11

I was into this book right from the start of it. It begins with Zane Mackenzie on a mission to locate Barrie Lovejoy, the rich ambassador's daughter. It isn't long before he finds Barrie Lovejoy tied up, and having been abused by very cruel men. He rescues Barrie and pulls her into safety until they can escape. It was love at first sight, but later in this part of the story tragedy happens in transport on a rescue boat. Zane is hurt pretty badly and taken via helicopter to the closest hospital. Barry fights to go with him, but they won't let her. Instead she is taken back to her father who is very overprotective. Barrie discovers that she is pregnant and is very depressed when her father won't let go of her. Barrie finds a way to escape her father's mansion, but as she is getting ready to, Zane finds her and much to Barrie's father's protestations, she leaves with Zane to start a new life with the baby.

Chance, Zane's brother, is in law-enforcement and assigned to capture Hauer, a terrorist, and bring him into justice. He had to find Sonny, the daughter of this man, and use her as bait to reach the man. When Chance arrives at the airport, he spots Sonny, and offers her a ride on his small plane to deliver an important package on time as Sonny is a currier, and is entrusted by her company to deliver promptly. Chance knows immediately that he loves this woman, and as the story goes, the small plane crashes to the ground, and they are stuck in a canyon. Survival won't be easy, but they manage until Zane arrives in a chopper a few days later to rescue them. Sonny will be found by her father again as Chance has purposely arranged her as bait to capture this dangerous man. And when it is all over, their short romance will probably have to end.

A great story well told and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Romance Series.......2006-11-13

Along with Linda Howard's "Mackenzie's Legacy" (which includes "Mackenzie's Mission" and "Mackenzie's Mountain),
this is one of the best romance series I've read.

Game of Chance was good, Mackenzie's Pleasure was the best of the series. It's a shame her current her recent stuff sucks.

3 out of 5 stars Worth buying for Mackenzie's Pleasure.......2006-01-23

In December 2005, I stumbled across this book (MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE) in a Silhouette edition twofer combining books by two different authors. Mackenzie's Pleasure, my Buried Treasure find for 2005, is the story of Zane Mackenzie, the youngest son of Wolf Mackenzie and his wife Mary Elizabeth (hero and heroine of Mackenzie's Mountain); I would love to see a twofer combining Mackenzie's Mountain with Mackenzie's Pleasure. Unfortunately, I have to settle for this book, which combines an excellent book with a less successful one.

Zane Mackenzie is called upon to execute a mission to rescue an ambassador's kidnapped daughter Barrie Lovejoy out of Libya. The first third of the book is about how the rescue takes place and with what consequences. In the second third, Zane and Barrie are separated by circumstances until they manage to find each other. Since there is a mystery and a bit of romantic suspense to the plot, I will not go further with the plot summary. It is probably sufficient to say that Barrie's kidnapping and rescue is somewhat more complicated than either Zane or Barrie realized.

MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE is one of the few stories where I genuinely liked the hero and heroine from the outset, and where I also felt that they were right for each other. That this contributed to my liking the book is not in question. Linda Howard's writing style also helped, as did her characterizations. Zane is an alpha male but not an overbearing alpha, but a protector and leader. The other SEALS came alive as did the heroine and her Ambassador father. What didn't work so well for me was the villain and his motivation (especially as explained to Barrie at the end).

Unfortunately, A GAME OF CHANCE is a very different kind of story about Chance, the adoptive son. Putting Chance and Zane together in the same "twofer" makes some sense, given that they are about the same age and apparently fought together regularly. The problem is not that Chance is the adoptive son, but that he is a different person from Zane. Whereas Zane makes it a point to protect the woman he loves (whether he realizes it or not), Chance uses the woman he loves (the heroine) as a bait for a dangerous trap. Arguing that he is not in love with the heroine does not change this fact. Chance's story is thus a disappointment for those who love heroes in the mold of Wolf and Zane Mackenzie, men who would do almost anything (save betray their country) to protect their families and their mates. I keep wondering if Chance would again put his wife in the line of fire in the national interest; the trouble is that I cannot convince myself that he had changed by the end.

MIRA's reprints: Mackenzie's Mountain (Wolf) goes with Mackenzie's Mission (Joe) in one volume. While Mackenzie's Magic (a story in an anthology) is left out, Mackenzie's Pleasure (Zane) is combined with A Game of Chance (Chance) in another volume. Of course, we have no stories for Michael and Josh, but have to find out what happy ending was in store for them from the first and last chapter of Mackenzie's Pleasure. I wish MIRA would reprint just the strongest stories Mackenzie's Mountain and Mackenzie's Pleasure.

Book Two of "The Warhorse of Esdragon"
Faithful wife to a small landholder, Druyan had lived her life in other people's shadows. And if she could sometimes hold the clouds at bay or whistle up a wind, Druyan made sure to keep that talent to herself. Then war came, and Druyan found herself a widow, with no one to help during the harvest but Kellis, the wounded prisoner her husband had locked in the root cellar the day he marched away. But when Druyan freed Kellis from the cellar, she unlocked a Pandora's box, for Kellis had secrets and magic of his own . . .

5 out of 5 stars She Had the Power to Whistle Up the Wind..........2002-07-31

The Wind Witch is the second book in the Warhorse of Esdragon series, but the story stands independent from the first book. This is the story of one of Leith and Kess' (the hero and heroine of The Prince of Ill Luck) descendants, Druyan. Druyan is the youngest daughter of a large family and has always done what she is told: she married a much older man, repressed her magical abilities and has resigned herself to being childless. When her husband is killed by the sea raiders, she is suddenly faced with a choice: go back to her family (who will marry her off to someone else) or try and freehold her farm. If she can pay all of the tithes and keep the farm going for a year and a day, the farm is hers. However, all of the men are away fighting for the Duke against the sea raiders and she needs help to run the farm. So she bargains with Kellis, one of raiders captured and imprisoned in the attack on her farm. He agrees to help her in exchange for his freedom. It soon becomes apparent that Kellis has magicial abilities - including the ability to see the future and/or the past. The problem is, he never knows if he is seeing the future or the past and he cannot really control what or when he sees. When Druyan finds out about his abilities, she is skeptical at first. But then Kerris' vision about the attack on her farm comes true. She then urges Kerris to try and "see" when the raiders are coming so she can warn others and keep the sea raiders from conquering her homeland. The legendary Valadan, a wind-sired stallion who can communicate with his rider (if he chooses), whisks Druyan throughout Esdragon to warn the people of incoming danger and plays an integral part in saving the people of Esdragon.

I must agree with other reviewers that this title was not as good as The Prince of Ill Luck, the first book in the series. The plot is not especially original: normal person required to do extraordinary things to rescue their country and become a hero, but it is always kind of fun to read this type of story and think that normal people can make a difference. It has a pretty slow, methodical pace until the last 100 pages or so. Kerris and Druyan's relationship was also slow in developing, but love does not always happen at first sight. Still, the country of Esdragon is a fascinating place and it was interesting to see it through a "farmer's" point of view instead of from a Duke's daughter. This gives the reader the opportunity to learn about how to harvest barley, thatch a roof, or weave cloth as opposed to breeding horses, swordfighting and the like.

Dexter's strong female characters will please many readers - it is unfortunate that her male characters are not quite as strong and believable. Still, there was good character development and maturation throughout the story. The characters grew in maturity, strength and confidence through the story and seemed like real people. I also enjoyed the different magical abilities of the heroine: the ability to whistle up the wind and storms. The hero is a more traditional magician and can see the future/past and shape-shift. It was nice to see both characters get strong magical abilities instead of just one or the other.

If you can only buy one book by Susan Dexter, buy The Prince of Ill Luck, if you can buy this one also, go for it. Just remember that they are very different from one another.

          4 out of 5 stars Found: A New Favoriate.......2001-03-06

I'd never heard of Susan Dexter when I picked up a used copy of this book at a local store, and I let it sit around for awhile before I started reading it. Now I'm dying to get my hands on everything else she's written. Druyan is a great character, vividly written and very alive. The setting was already unusual enough to be memorable (a plain, ordinary old farm, home to all those _other_ people whom no one ever writes about but who must surely make up the majority of the population of any medievel-based fantasy world) and interesting before Kellis appeared to throw her life for a loop, and remained so throughout the book. Sure, she has the requisite perks of a fantasy heroine--mainly, noble relatives--but Druyan remains a freshly, believably normal woman throughout the book, even when she's doing the extraordinary. And speaking of the extraordinary (I'm not going to spoil the plot), Ms. Dexter writes that pretty well, too. That's what makes this book so pleasantly worthwhile.

I've read Ms Dexter since her first book came out and she hasn't lost her talent for quirky characters and wonderful, terrible worlds. I actually like this better than the other Warhorse books. (Incidently, you don't have to read any of the others in order to enjoy the rest of the "trilogy") This book is full of the reality of farm life before mechanism. More than any of her novels to date, this one reminded me a little of Andre Norton's Witch World series. I wish Ms Dexter would write some more.

3 out of 5 stars Impressive depth, but slow moving.......1999-05-26

This book wasn't as much fun as the Prince of Ill Luck, but it was still very enjoyable. The main tension in the story - about a woman struggling to become her own person in a very realistic medieval world - is intriguing. The characters are also well done, a mixture of ambiguious elements. The only problem with the story was that it needed to move faster, the same story could have been told in half the time.

Varner explores the use of magic, spells and curses among indigenous groups as well as state approved religions such as those observed in ancient Rome and Greece, and how even contemporary Christianity uses many of the same "magic" combinations. Also examined is the current "witch craze" in several countries where thousands are being killed as witches, the underlying reasons for this tragedy and the history of anti-witchcraft laws. The Dark Wind is a book for everyone interested in anthropology, archaeology, ancient history, religion and the occult. Illustrated with contemporary woodcuts and drawings. The author is a member of the American Folklore Society and the Foundation for Mythological Studies.

Letters and Papers from Prison is a collection of notes and correspondence covering the period from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's arrest in 1943 to his execution by the Gestapo in 1945. The book is probably most famous, and most important, for its idea of "religionless Christianity"--an idea Bonhoeffer did not live long enough fully to develop, but whose timeliness only increases as the lines between secular and ecclesial life blur. Bonhoeffer's first mention of "religionless Christianity" came in a letter in 1944:
What is bothering me incessantly is the question what Christianity really is, or indeed who Christ really is, for us today. The time when people could be told everything by means of words, whether theological or pious, is over, and so is the time of inwardness and conscience--and that means the time of religion in general. We are moving towards a completely religionless time; people as they are now simply cannot be religious any more. Even those who honestly describe themselves as "religious" do not in the least act up to it, and so they presumably mean something quite different by "religious."
The pleasures of Letters and Papers from Prison, however are not all so profound. Occasionally, Bonhoeffer's letters burst into song--sometimes with actual musical notations, other times with unforgettable phrases. Looking forward to seeing his best friend, Bonhoeffer writes, "To meet again is a God." --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and moving letters that transcend human created myth........2007-05-10

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters & Papers from Prison was a most edifying read, primarily because it stripped away the mystery and mythical aura that surrounded him, before and after his murder by the Nazis in 1945. The fact that his reputation is so universally well known is greatly due in part to his brother-in-law, the late Eberhard Bethge.

Having been raised in a very German household myself, I would hear occasional stories from my own father, who grew up in Germany at that time, about the German pastor who was a part of the plot to kill Hitler, the one who was the moral conscience who aided the conspirators while they tried to rid Germany of the diabolical dictator and his vile atrocities that were sweeping throughout the land, for nothing was sacrosanct.

Bonhoeffer, known throughout the Christian world for his books, The Cost of Discipleship and Ethics, among other treaties, pamphlets and sermons, was a great example in respects to how a man or woman can truly live an independent Christian life while working in the world and that heroism does not necessarily come from preaching the Gospel, but rather, living it or trying to. It also comes from incorporating nuances of those truths, big or small, into the daily activities of ones life and sharing that Christian goodness (in a healthy and practical manner) with people from all walks of life, irrelevant of class structure, education, ethnic background, et cetera.

In this book, Bonhoeffer's theological musings move from the act of suffering to the meaning of love, whether human, religious or even material, and the insights that he shares with some of his correspondents, especially Eberhard Bethge, is sometimes profoundly compelling, and one can endlessly cite the abundant source material to back that up. But while he was accepting his cross of suffering, knowing in a way that it was a gift, he had an agony for those whom he was separated from, specificially his fiance, Maria von Wedemeyer-Weller.

The overall profile of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as presented in this work, showcases an all too human man, sometimes short-tempered and impatient yet very religious, contemplative, moral, ethical and surprisingly creative. For an example of that, read his short fiction piece entitled: "Lance-Corporal Berg: A narrative" which is almost similarly reminiscent, style-wise, to that of the writer and author Erich Maria Remarque. His poems, however, were not that great, but it made him only more real.

Though I am Catholic and my interpretation of Scripture is slightly different, much of what Bonhoeffer wrote spoke volumes to me, especially in tackling the day-to-day challenges and experiences that life has to offer. I think he speaks to many people, and that is good, for what he has to say, by his life, writings, choices, down to his martyrdom can cross all ecumenical boundaries. And that is indeed a remarkable witness.

5 out of 5 stars An Example of Faith.......2007-02-06

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Letters and Papers from Prison" is the account of an extremely intelligent German theologian and pastor who was thrown into prison during WWII. The correspondence Bonhoeffer shared with his family members during the time he spent in prision (over a year and a half)reveals his character in a remarkably honest way. The love and concern he has for his family and his selflessness, even while sitting in prison, are a great testament to the Christian faith regardless of your theological position.

                            4 out of 5 stars Journal of a Christian.......2005-10-28

I bought the book looking to know more about Bonhoeffer's theology..and ended up learning more about my own. Though at times I didn't agree with his thoughts, I found myself agreeing with the man. These letters mix profound questions with small daily details of life. It is authentic and transparent in a way that typical straightforward "theology" books can't be. There is honest, articulate, and earnest faith in these unselfconscious and private thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Story of Resistance.......2005-06-20

I read this book several years ago at the behest of my Pastor when I was still a man of faith. And although I've essentially fallen out of that faith in the last few years, I still consider this one of the most inspiring true stories I have ever read. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German minister who openly spoke out against the Nazis-and allegedly even participated in the plot to kill Hitler-was imprisoned in 1943 and eventually hanged by the German government shortly before the end of the war. This is a collection of his correspondence with his family and friends during his two years of incarceration.

The strength of this book is that Bonhoeffer was not only a truly courageous man who refused to abandon his principles, but as a Christian, he actually practiced what he preached. This seems to be rare these days and I think the reason that so many people resent Christians and Christianity is that they see so many of them as hypocrites. They constantly talk about God and peace, and righteousness, yet they are so quick to drop a bomb or condemn those that disagree with them. Bonhoeffer represents a pure Christianity of love and justice. This is my take at least and others might disagree with my assessment. With that said, this was a man who truly believed in his God and accepted with dignity whatever fate that God had in store for him. His courage and joy in the face of such a harsh fate is evident in his writings. So, even though I don't share Bonhoeffer's religious beliefs or some of his "ethics," I don't hesitate to recommend this truly inspiring book to believers and non-believers alike. My only warning is that there is a lot of theological discussion and those with little or no knowledge of the religion might find these parts a bit over their head.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Tragic Historical Record.......2004-09-02

I bought this book not knowing what to expect. What I found was an odd mixture of thoughts of a man in a horrible position. The letters, poems, notes, and short stories run the gamut of emotions. In one letter Bonhoeffer is examining some theological principle and in another he is keeping up on family relations. If you read this book, you will get an idea of what it must have been like to be a Nazi prisoner and depend on others for your care. You will also learn how much Bonhoeffer cared for his fiancee and best friend. Three words of advice: 1) know a bit about Bonhoeffer's life before you pick up this book, 2) look into the new translation of this book that will be coming out soon from Ausburg Fortress Press and 3) be prepared for an emotional and moving look behind the closed doors of a Nazi prison.
