5 out of 5 stars Two Really Great Stories!!.......2006-10-05

First story is about a young woman who has secretly loved the hero for years. But as for the hero he is determined not to love her but deep down he really does. I cried along with the heroine at one point it was so sad. It is a bit bitersweet because of what the hero's sister assumes has happened between her boyfriend and the heroine. And you can just feel the hero's hear breaking when everything is revealed. Truly a terrific story.

Second story is about a secretary who falls in love with the hero's children and then falls for the hero who does not want to love again, does he change his mind? Of course! I really liked the part were the hero's brother is trying to make him admit his feelings for the heroine by giving her a kiss just when the hero is walking through the door, whew talk about tempers!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-03-20

I have to start out by saying that I loved this book. Both stories were great! I have re-read them a hundred times. I really loved the story of Mack and Natalie. I loved the fact that he was blind in one eye AND that Natalie was the only person that could get him through the rough times. Finally, we get a woman charcter that is just as strong, if not stronger than the male lead. The line, "Every woman's dream until he opens his mouth" was a great line. I think of that phrase when I think of this story. Although I can't believe she didn't punch him in the face when he was saying those horrible things to her in front of everybody on the street. The second story was great also. I loved the fact that it was a more buisness type story. When he was going through her refrences...I cracked up. There is a lot of sadness in "Circle of Gold". I kinda found it hard to believe that this woman had so much tragedy in her life, but that's what makes it a good book. (Escape from reality for a little while) I think the first story was more believeable than the second but I would recommend this book to anybody.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY - SOME GALS WHO DON'T SLEEP AROUND!.......2005-02-09

Both stories are about young women who find love in their innocence. And about men who refuse to completely compromise these young women's virginity. Yes, this is a very powerful emotional balance.

As these were billed as The Men of Medicine Ridge, I was waiting to see if they knew each other. Never did find out.

Mack Killian has been raising his siblings and Natalie Brock, an orphan taken in by the Killian family, have a very strong attraction. Mack has lost the sight of one eye from a bull goring and Natalie helped strengthen his will to pull through.

He can't see taking on a wife and saddling her with his responsibilities. But his two brothers and sister actually do love Natalie. Almost as much as he does. Which, of course he won't give into his love.

Yea! Natalie somehow wins in the end --- you will love these stories. Finally, the ladies are not tramps.

Gil Callister is in need of a secretary for his brother, John.
When he asks Kasie why she wants the job. [I love her answer] "Because John is a dish!"
He is also fascinated by her odd character references. "A Catholic priest, a nun, a Texas Ranger and a self-made millionaire with alleged mob ties."

And then he finds out that she and her brother were named for this mercenary - K.C. Kantor [what a story]
Kasie actually turns Gil's life upside-down. His secretary claims not to know how to use a computer. His nanny does not like baby-sitting. And Kasie just does not like doing taxes. And she has a fear of flying. Wait till you find out how the group resolves itself - especially when Gil sees his brother kiss Kasie.

D.P. has given us a couple of real men, although Mack was a bit of a tom-cat. And these two women are worthy of being definitely female [not a pair of alley-cats]

There is enough emotional tension without the bed hopping to make fantastic romance - this is what some of us dream of finding.
      Decent guys!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED with no reservations -- definitely a keeper for those of us with high ideals.

2 out of 5 stars A Die-Hard DP Fan, but Not of This!.......2004-11-18

I've read most of DP's books; some I've loved & read over & over again; some were so boring that I just had to skip-through.... I'm sorry to say that I had to skip-through the first 2/3 of the first story in this book -- Wedding in White. It was not as sensual or gripping as some of her better works. Only the last 1/3 of the story was gripping, and I would give about 2.5 stars for this story....
What was worse was the second story in this book -- Circle of Gold. It just didn't make any kind of sense! There were just so many contradictions in this story that made me believe that DP must have written this one while she was dozing-off, and I can't believe that anyone who has the least bit of analytical mind would give this story more than a 1 star!

5 out of 5 stars Both stories were very endearing!.......2004-11-12

This book is a combination of 2 previous books. They are "Wedding in White" and "Circle of Gold". They are both really good stories. It's a keeper for me. There is a good review of Circles of Gold under that book so I won't mention what it is about. Wedding in White is about Mack Killian and his 2 brothers and his sister. Their parents are dead and he has been responsible for them for a number of years. He is only in his 20's himself. There is an orphan (named Natalie) that came to live with her aunt, which was right next to the Killian Ranch. Natalie becomes a part of their family. When she is 17 her "boyfriend" is killed in an accident and Mack comes to comfort her. He has hidden his desire for her since then as he felt she was too young to shoulder all the responsibility he had and he felt that a wife was added responsibility for him. But now she is 23 and his desire is becoming more apparent. He is saying and doing things he has never done before. She is liking it because she has always loved him too. There is some tense moments and even betrayal but then Natalie moves away and is involved in an accident. Mack is called because she has no other family. What will happen?????? Guess you'll have to read and find out. I have gone back and re-read it several times already. I just thought they were great stories.

        Description:
There is evidence that depressive symptoms in men are often undiagnosed and untreated. It has been suggested that men may find it difficult to seek help because culturally dominant (or hegemonic) forms of masculinity are characterised by emotional control and a lack of vulnerability, while depression is often associated with powerlessness and the uncontrolled expression of emotion. However, very little research exists which examines men's experiences of depression. We analysed 16in-depth interviews with a wide range of men with depression in the UK Our analysis explored associations between depression and men's gender identities. We found that, as part of recovery from depression, it was important for men to reconstruct a valued sense of themselves and their own masculinity. The most common strategy was to incorporate values associated with hegemonic masculinity into narratives (being 'one of the boys', re-establishing control, and responsibility to others). While this strategy could aid recovery, there was also evidence that the pressures of conforming to the standards of hegemonic masculinity could contribute to suicidal behaviour. In contrast, a minority of men had found ways of being masculine which were outside hegemonic discourses. They emphasised their creativity, sensitivity and intelligence, explicitly reflected on different models of masculinity and redefined their 'difference' as a positive feature. Our research demonstrates that it is possible to locate men who can, and will, talk about depression and their feelings; thus generalisations about depressed men always being silent are misleading. While some men will have the resources to construct identities that resist culturally dominant definitions of masculinity, many others will find it more useful (and perhaps less threatening) to re-interpret potentially feminising experiences as 'masculine'. Health professionals need to be aware of the issues raised by men's narratives which emphasise control, strength and responsibility to others.

Despite the submarine cover art and the rather awkward title, this is no by-the-numbers military thriller: rather, it's a full-blooded, multidimensional adventure story set in the frozen wilds of Alaska, both atop the ice and underneath it. And it's one heck of a fun ride. Matthew Pike is a Fish and Game officer cataloging bear populations in the remote Brooks Range--but he's also an ex-Green Beret, which comes in handy when trouble drops out of the sky in the form of a crashed bush plane, a cryptic survivor, and some very nasty and well-equipped pursuers. Meanwhile, an American submarine stumbles on an abandoned research station buried under the Arctic ice cap, unleashing a race to conceal the horrors that took place there and to capture the priceless scientific secret still locked within.

James Rollins invokes the polar environment so vividly you can hear the wind shriek and feel the ice forming on your nose, and the scientific/medical puzzles at the story's heart may remind you of Michael Crichton's best. The characters, while mostly familiar hero or villain types, are crisply drawn and in some cases quite sympathetic, but it's the nonstop action that carries you along. During several climactic chase scenes, you may find yourself laughing in pure delight--or gasping for breath--as Rollins keeps finding ways to ratchet up the tension one more notch. Ice Hunt is an escapist's delight. --Nicholas H. Allison

        Book Description

Carved into a moving island of ice twice the size of the United States, Ice Station Grendel has been abandoned for more than seventy years. The twisted brainchild of the finest minds of the former Soviet Union, it was designed to be inaccessible and virtually invisible. But an American undersea research vessel has inadvertently pulled too close—and something has been sighted moving inside the allegedly deserted facility, something whose survival defies every natural law. And now, as scientists, soldiers, intelligence operatives, and unsuspecting civilians are drawn into Grendel's lethal vortex, the most extreme measures possible will be undertaken to protect its dark mysteries—because the terrible truths locked behind submerged walls of ice and steel could end human life on Earth.

        "

When an American deep-sea research team discovers something moving -- something alive -- inside an abandoned Russian ice station, two powerful nations scramble to hide the nightmarish truth, because once it is revealed, the future of all human life on Earth will be altered -- or destroyed.

Buried deep in the earth's polar ice cap -- carved into a moving island of ice twice the size of the United States -- is a secret place, the site of a remarkable abandoned experiment that could have frightening ramifications for the planet. The brain trust of the former Soviet Union who created the seventy-year-old Ice Station Grendel would like it simply to melt from human memory. But that becomes impossible when an American undersea research vessel, the Polar Sentinel, inadvertently pulls too close to the hollowed-out iceberg ... and one of the crew sees something alive inside. Something that never should have survived.

It is a discovery that sends shock waves through the intelligence communities of two powerful nations, as American and Russian scientists, soldiers, and unsuspecting civilians are pulled into Grendel's lethal vortex of secrets, violence, and betrayal. To preserve the silence -- to prevent others from uncovering the terrible mysteries locked behind submerged walls of ice and steel -- no measures will be too extreme. For within the station, experiments have blurred the line between life and death. It was a place never meant to be found. One man already knows too much: Matthew Pike, a former American Special Forces operative, living in seclusion in Alaska on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

        5 out of 5 stars Ice Hunt.......2007-09-30

This book reads fast, like the rest of the series. Rollins provides page-turner action with just enough terror and intrique to keep your attention. I would not recommend starting this book unless you have some time blocked out to allow total immersion in the story.

I got the book and everything is just fine with it no complaints here. Keep up the good work

5 out of 5 stars The Author's Books are Always Fast Moving.......2007-07-26

James Rollins was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1961. With his three brothers and three sisters, he was raised in the Midwest and rural Canada. He graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri and went on to establish his own veterinary practice in Sacramento, California. His sense of adventure often takes him either underground or underwater.

This is the another action packed adventure from the author, whose books for me anyway are consistently good and always an enjoyable read. Long may he continue to write them for his growing number of fans. Some writers have an immediate impact and then die away. James Rollins has slowly built his reputation over a period of years.

Buried deep in the earth's polar ice cap - carved into a moving island of ice twice the size of the United States - is a secret place, the site of a remarkable abandoned experiment that could have frightening ramifications for the planet . . .

5 out of 5 stars Good heavens, this is excellent!!!.......2007-07-15

First, I hope they've made this into a movie. If so, where is it? I'll be the first in line to buy the DVD. This nail-biting thriller sets the reader on edge from beginning to end. The plot is sprinkled with scientific fact to make it even more plausible (and more frightening.) Set in the arctic, it incorporates the outdoor adventure element I love along with the horror/drama that keeps me turning the pages. I'm unapologetic to my husband for keeping the reading light on late. He can get even with me when he reads it next! Mr. Rollins, please adapt this into a screenplay if you haven't already!

3 out of 5 stars Not even close to his best.......2007-07-02

Deep in the Artic Ocean researchers have found an ice station carved out of an inverted glacier that floats under sea level. It is further discovered that it is an abandoned Russian research station that once experimented on living subjects in an effort to perfect cryogenetics or preserving humans in a frozen state. But the Russians aren't the only ones interested in protecting this horrifying secret. The US is also espeically interested in the facility. But if their interest in protecting it is as deadly as the Russians, then what does the US believe it stands to lose? Or have exposed?

Matt is a fish and game ranger in Alaska and his ex-wife Jenny is a Sheriff. They find themselves thrown uncomfortably back together as they ferry a reporter out to the ice station and attempt to warn officials that someone is out to get them. But they quickly find out that they can trust no one and must rely on each other despite constant painful reminders of exactly what forced them apart in the first place.

Ice Hunt is action packed in a way that is typical of James Rollins' other novels. But the plot is not nearly as interesting as some of the others. The plot twists are fairly predictable and disappointing. The "scientific secret" is somewhat underwhelming and not enough of a shocker to support the urgency of the characters. Overall, Ice Hunt entertains, but does not hold up to the author's other novels and ends in a predictable disappointment.

        Book Description

January, 1951, while the country is in the grip of war in Korea, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and Senator Joe McCarthy, the residents of St. Adele, Michigan are more concerned with staying warm and shoveling snow, until a bizarre ice storm brings down a towering pine. Entangled in its roots is evidence that leads Constable John McIntire to the abandoned farmstead of a young couple who had supposedly left the community years before, part of an exodus of Finnish-Americans gone off to build a workers' Utopia in the Soviet republic of Karelia. McIntire's fears are realized when he discovers two bodies, buried sixteen years in an unused cistern.

In his zeal to uncover the truth, McIntire brings the scrutiny--and the suspicion--of a Red-hunting government agent upon his neighbors and himself. It is only the beginning of his mis-calculations. Each step in investigating the deaths seems only to bring more misery to the living. Old wounds are opened, old terrors rekindled, and old wrongs exposed. McIntire himself is not immune. He struggles to solve the two-decades old murders, while a part of the past he hoped to bury forever threatens to destroy his new life.

5 out of 5 stars Solid complex murder mystery.......2006-04-29

Author Kathleen Hills has a history with regions of the northern United States, and although the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is separate and distinct, from, say Montana or Northern Wisconsin, there are certainly similarities. In this third outing for the author's protagonist, the reluctant constable of St. Adele, John McIntire, comes across evidence that two former neighbors had not emigrated to the Soviet Union, as was supposed by pretty much everybody in the region.

In the early 1930's this country was in the grip of a serious depression and there was more than a little unrest. Some people organized a sort of mass emigration by mostly poor or disaffected people to a place in the Soviet Union called Karelia. Karelia was touted as the people's Eden, a place where everyone would be well-housed, properly fed and would find useful work, according to their needs. Karelia was advertised as sort of the penultimate socialist community. In reality, a lot of people who went, disappeared and were never heard from again. What was their fate in Stalinist Russia?

WITCH CRADLE, is set in the early fifties, a time when suspicion of that great evil, Communism, also known as the Soviet Union, was rampant in this country. It was the time of Roy Cohen and Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. It was a time of black listing and anxiety. And while the people of the Upper Peninsula were relatively isolated from most of the excesses of that time, there were those who would take advantage of the circumstances. Bringing those national concerns down to the individual and very personal concerns of the people of St. Adele is a feat worth reading about, especially in the careful and adept hands of author Kathleen Hills.

Many questions rise. What is the FBI doing hanging around this isolated area? What exactly was Constable McIntire doing during his time away from St. Adele, the time he refuses to talk about? What exactly did happen to the people who went to the Soviet Union? And if some of the former residents of the area never made it to Karelia, what happened to them and why? This is a moving, solid work about people we all can relate to, in one form or another.

VHS: On April 14, 1988 a debate was held in Dallas, Texas to discuss this very issue: Is Christian Reconstruction theology deviant - or heretical? Two of the participants, Dave Hunt and Tommy Ice contend that it is. The other two participants, Reconstructionists, Gary DeMar and Dr. Gary North say no. The controversy began with Dave Hunt's best-selling book THE SEDUCTION OF CHRISTIANITY, published in 1985. His book is a valiant attmept to expose the errors and heresies of the New Age movement. As most reconstructionists will agree, Hunt is correct in saying that these ideas have been infiltrating the Christian communities. This two hour video presentation addresses these and other key theological questions concerning Reconstruction theology as well as Dispensational theology.

Thanks so much to the Fortunes for writing such a helpful book - so clear and full of useful information. After reading and re-discovering my Gift, I am in awe of how easy it is to see His Gifts in others. Thank You!!!

4 out of 5 stars Theologically accurate; Practically insightful; Fantastic for teaching; but Excessive in application.......2005-10-12

The best resource I've found for spiritual gift study so far.

The theological foundation is very sound, making good sense of the main passages on spiritual gifts in a way very few others do. Gifts are broken into 1) Manifestation (sign gifts - 1 Cor 12-14; Acts 2) 2) Ministry (equipping gifts - Eph 4) & 3) Motivational (every-Christian-gifts - Rom 12).

Written in a style anyone can use.

Inventories are great and surprisingly accurate for the limited number of questions used.

Warnings regarding misuse of spiritual gift impulses are very helpful (e.g. a "teaching" gift can incline a person to feel they are always right).

Application into the arena of employment is a bit excessive and beyond the scope of biblical applications for spiritual gifts. Better to do a Myers-Briggs or some other personality profile for that endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars My choice for spiritual gifts work with churches.......2005-05-29

As a church consultant, I am often asked to recommend spiritual gift surveys and resources for churches. In fact, we routinely ask staff members to fill out gift surveys as part of the consulting process. This book--and the corresponding survey available separately--are the tools I have chosen to use in my work.

I realize, of course, that there is no such thing as a perfect spiritual gifts survey. Since Scripture does not give precise definitions to many of the gifts, and there is much disagreement about the nature of specific gifts, the best any gift survey can do is measure whether a person has abilities corresponding to the author's understanding of a particular gift.

The reason I have chosen this survey is because it distinguishes between what the authors call the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), the ministry gifts (Eph. 4), and the motivational gifts (Romans 12). The Fortune's survey measures only the motivational gifts. (I feel the title of "ministry" gifts for the Ephesians 4 gifts is unfortunate since that passage says that those 5 gifts are given to equip all believers for ministry. I prefer to call them "equipping gifts.")

I have found using this survey to be very helpful in our consulting work, especially in assessing church staff needs. The idea is that each of us is motivated to minister mostly through one or more of these seven gifts, and which of these motivates us largely determines how we respond to a given need.

I find it interesting that when Pentecostal/charismatic churches take the Natural Church Development survey (a widely used survey to assess church health), the most common Minimum Factor (low score area) is gift-oriented ministry. However, having consulting with charismatic churches, that result did not surprise me. Why? Because the primary gift emphasis in those churches is on the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), and few of the people in those churches were aware of motivational gifts or drew on that awareness to discern what shape their ministry should take. I say this not to discount the manifestation gifts, but to point out that for the purpose of determining ongoing ministry roles, the motivational gifts are far more useful. That is why I believe as a practical matter, a survey that measures the seven motivational gifts is most helpful.

Like any other authors of spiritual gift surveys, the Fortunes make assumptions in defining these gifts. While their assumptions seem to me to be reasonable, they still remain their opinions, not the teaching of Scripture, and so their gift definitions (just as anyone else's) need to be held lightly. When this tool is approached as giving us useful language for talking about and identifying motivational gifts, and not as "the right way" to talk about them, I have found it to be valuable.

2 out of 5 stars Built on a flawed foundation.......2004-04-20

I applaud the Fortunes for doing a great job of encouraging people to discover and develop their spiritual gifts. Many of their tidbits and applications are very helpful and motivating. However, I have a problem with some of their foundational assumptions.

First, the idea that the "motivational" gifts of Romans 12 are of a different nature than the "manifestational" gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 is, in my opinion, not defensible. While Paul uses a variety of terms, the key word "charisma" is present in both passages. Also, the Fortune theory requires that the gift of "prophecy" in 1 Cor 12 be given a different definition than the gift of "prophecy" in Rom 12 even though the word is the same in both passages and there is no compelling contextual reason for two different definitions. Is it my personal suspicion, based on my study, that at the root of the "motivational vs manifestational" dichotomy is (in part) the desire to avoid dealing with the more "phenominal" gifts of 1 Cor 12 (tongues, miracles, etc.). Please note that I do not adhere to charismatic or pentecostal theology. However, I also don't find any Biblical warrent to exclude the 1 Cor 12 gifts from today's church.

Second, the practical result of this dichotomy is that the Fortunes must find a way for every believer to have not only a spiriutal gift, but specifically a Rom 12 gift ... significantly narrowing the field of variety of gifts.

Third, the Fortunes don't seem to distinguish clearly enough between spiritual gifts - gifts given by the Holy Spirit when He enters your life; and given specifically for the building up of the Church - and natural talents (God-given abilities that can be used in all facets of life). Yes, spiritual gifts and natural talents will often correspond closely, since ultimately they both come from our Creator God. However, the clear Biblical purpose of spiritual gifts is not to find a job you like, but to advance God's Kingdom. I admit that not all "God's work" happens within the walls and programs of the organized church, but to link spiritual gifts to finding a job is, in my opinion, weak theology.

There are some good nuggets in the Fortunes' book. Unfortunately, the flawed foundation points the reader in a less-than-ideal direction. A better basic perspective on spiritual gifts is C. Peter Wagner's little book "Discover Your Spiritual Gifts".

5 out of 5 stars Every one needs to read this book-- pick it up now!.......2000-09-21

Don & Katie Fortune's book, "Discovering Your God-Given Gifts" is a tremendous asset in the library of every spiritual seeker, server and leader.

There are a lot of "gift" books out there and as a teacher, I probably have all of them in our library. This one is great because it presents a clear case for how different lists of gifts serve their unique purpose in corporate worship and life. It is easy to understand and share with others-- you'll want to go through it together in your Bible study group.

All of us wonder from time to time where we fit in when it comes to ministry gifts and service. The Fortunes have hit it on the head when it comes to helping us identify our motivational gifts.

This book is especially useful for ministry teams, small groups and any setting where a variety of people have to relate or serve together. The very first benefit of reading it, is the insight you'll gain to seeing how each of us in our gifts are needed to work together in balance.

Of course, the thing you will love about this are the surveys included that help you determine your primary and secondary motivational gifting. I also recommend that you order directly from the Fortunes several of the supplemental tests that can be used with children, secular audiences etc.

You'll love it. I give it my highest recommendation.
