Desirable Daughters, by the prolific writer Bharati Mukherjee, whose short story collection The Middleman won the 1998 National Book Critics Circle Award, is a masterful meditation on marriage and family ties. It begins on a fantastic note: on a winter night in an east Bengali village in 1879, the narrator's ancestor, 5-year-old Tara Lata, is married to a tree after her 13-year-old husband-to-be dies of a snakebite on their wedding day. The novel ends some 120 years later, when Tara, the 36-year-old narrator, returns to this same village in winter with her teenaged son. Like her ancestor, Tara Bhattacharjee is the youngest of three sisters of a Brahmin family. Although they grew up in Calcutta, Tara and the oldest sister now live in America while the middle sister lives in Bombay. Tara was married (in an arranged marriage) at age 19 to Bish Chatterjee, a genius who makes a fortune from a cutting-edge computer process. He and Tara are estranged when the novel opens, but when a stranger claiming kinship shows up at the house that Tara shares in San Francisco with her son and her boyfriend, she reconsiders her assumptions about her entire family. In the course of the novel, a sister's secret and a murder are uncovered, and a near-fatal bombing occurs. Mukherjee's Desirable Daughters is yet another of her magically written, compelling novels. --Susan Biskeborn

Book Description

"The highlight of her career to date . . . Mukherjee bursts out as a star" (Publishers Weekly [starred review]) in her stirring novel of three women, two continents, and a perilous journey from the old world to the new -- now available in paperback.

In the tradition of the Joy Luck Club, Bharati Mukherjee has written a remarkable novel that is both the portrait of a traditional Brahmin Indian family and a contemporary American story of a woman who has in many ways broken with tradition but still remains tied to her native country.

Mukherjee follows the diverging paths taken by three extraordinary Calcutta-born sisters as they come of age in a changing world. Moving effortlessly between generations, she weaves together fascinating stories of the sisters' ancestors, childhood memories, and dramatic scenes from India's history.

2 out of 5 stars An unworthy read.......2006-09-18

I picked up this novel in the bargain book section and Im EVER so happy that I only paid five dollars for it. The book started out intrestingly enough yet about 1/3 I just wanted it to be over! I kept reading because I was hoping the quality of writing would improve and by the end of the novel I was disappointed that I stuck it out and finished.

The plot left much to be desired, and was hard to follow at times. There seemed to be no clear resolution to any conflict and random ideas were thrown in haprazordly. However, the description of Bengali life and social status was portrayed accurately and some characters(such as Rabi, the narrators son, was three dimensional). All in all, I could have found a much better book to read on a lazy Sunday afternoon- Dont waste your time on this novel.

1 out of 5 stars Not very captivating at all.......2006-08-19

I tried to read this many times. Somehow, I got easily bored. Finally I gave up reading it. It was a waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Canon reformation fad.......2006-02-16

Mukherjee is one of the lucky few hand picked by the critics in attempting to reform the classic canon. In trying to provide a voice to an unrecognised minority - the literary critics have foisted this trash upon us - and the public say "pull the other one."

Rather than letting the quality of the writing do the talking Mukherjee infuses her tedious prose with cliched cultural references and overblown reinterpretation. Leaves the reader feeling quite angry at how an author could be so presumptuous.

5 out of 5 stars Desirable Daughters.......2005-08-16

I bought this book at Border's on Friday and it such a great book. I was looking for something unique and interesting, a book that would hold my attention. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially people interested in different cultures. I am certainly going to read the other books in this trilogy!

3 out of 5 stars Just can't get hooked.......2005-06-25

I am the kind of reader who likes to finish things I start and, while this book has enough of a plot to make it worth finishing to find the resolution, I've had a hard time getting sucked in by it. The characters aren't built deeply enough to really feel committed to them. I agree with the other reviewers that the plot has lots of interesting topics regarding immigration and culture but really should have focused on one or two to be much stronger.

I'm selling "Wintertide" to a used bookstore in perfect condition. I'm glad so many people have really enjoyed this novel, but the total lack of negative reviews bothered me -- I just don't think this is a five star book.

The plot was inconsistent. The leading lady appears to be incapable of making her own decisions. The oracle tells her, and she obeys -- unless her husband asks her to do something, in which case she immediately does the opposite. She treats her husband quite poorly -- gets married for mercenary reasons and seldom considers his feelings -- and then randomly acts in a affectionate manner. The villagers' extreme hostility towards her and her magic just didn't make sense, particularly since they are constantly asking her for magical assistence.

By the time she leaves home for good, the leading lady comes across as a selfish girl, who is incapable of respecting other people's customs. The entirely plot up to that point was all "poor me", which I personally abhor. Perhaps the last 3/4 of the book are better -- I cannot say.

Anyway, if you decide to buy this book, good for you! But don't build it up in your mind to be more than it is -- light entertainment, suitable to pass the time.

            5 out of 5 stars Unputdownable!.......2004-08-20

Khamsin "Kammi" of Cirrus Cove is a woman-child linked to the powerful Sorcerer, Rothal-Kiarr, by command of an Assignation spell at her birth. She is raised by Tanta Bron, the village Healer, and taught most of what she needed before Tanta died. When the Hill Raiders attacked Cirrus Cove, they killed everyone Khamsin cared for, including her husband. The only one left alive for her was her cat, Nixa, with whom Kammi can mind link to.

Khamsin and Nixa travel with Rylan the Tinker to the city of Noviiya. There, the mad wizard, Ciro, would complete her training and prepare her for the destiny that awaited her. Kammi must travel through dangerous lands and hazardous forests filled with raiders and demons to reach the Sorcerer's castle fortress, Traakhal-Armin. Once there, she must gain entry to a secret room in the East Tower and obtain the Orb of Knowledge.

Through it all, Melande the Witch, Lucial the Wizard, and Rothal-Kiarr the Sorcerer, battle each other as they have for centuries in their quests for power and conquests. Only Khamsin can stop the Infernal War. If she fails, all is lost.

***** It has been quite awhile since I have read such a wonderful fantasy novel such as this. It captured my attention on the very first page and never let go, as if an enchantment spell had been cast upon my imagination. UNPUTDOWNABLE! *****

Wintertide - A time of great change between the seasons as well as events in Khamsin's life. She has an assignation placed on her at birth and therefore it is her destiny to be claimed by the evil sorcerer before her eighteenth birthday. Instead her world is destroyed and she sets out on a path to avenge those who died and to seek out knowledge.

Khamsin has been raised in the small village of Cirrus Cove and taught the Healing Arts and the magic necessary to help her survive. While she dutifully married her husband, she doesn't know love. Then on her eighteenth birthday, the Hill Raiders attack her village. Rylan, the tinker rescues her after a horrible beating and saves her from getting hung as a witch. Traveling with her cat Nixa and Rylan, she falls in love.

Ms Sinclair became one of my favorite authors when I read AN ACCIDENTAL GODDESS (actually written as Megan Sybil Baker). While it is one of my favorite books WINTERTIDE is actually the prequel, so read this one first! They are stand-alone books, but so much of the history becomes clear reading them in order.

WINTERTIDE is a journey for Khamsin that tests everything she believes in from who the Hill-Raiders are to the Gods she prays too, as well as those she doesn't. Khamsin has so many bad things happen in her young life it is amazing! However rather than giving into defeat, she uses each tragedy to become stronger so she can free the country from the fighting demigods by destroying the Orb of Knowledge.

While it seems like Khamsin is alone most of the story, I was drawn to the visual images as well as emotions that Ms Sinclair has written. This applies to everything from the varying scenery to the eeriness portrayed by the crows.

I love Nixa, her cat. While most secondary characters are human - Nixa, I think fills this roll. She has a mental bond with Khamsin that adds joy to the story that alleviates tension. Also, her simple presence and single word thoughts made me laugh.

I thought WINTERTIDE was a very well written novel that invokes a wide range of emotions. I'm so glad Ms Sinclair's novels will get printed mainstream because she is an exceptional author and one I think everyone should know about. You can't miss this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Magical Fantasy Read You Won't Want To Miss!!.......2004-07-31

Wintertide is a wonder fantasy romance which is well written and fast paced. I'm not really a fan of the fantasy genre but this book was truly the exception!

For centuries there has been an on going war for control of the Orb of Knowledge. The person who holds the orb controls everything. During a storm at Wintertide a child is born who will have the power to do just that.

When Khamsin turns eighteen her quite peaceful life comes to an end with the death of her husband and family during a raid. The remaining villagers accuse her of being a witch and the reason why this tragedy befell them. As a result Khamsin is badly injured but is saved by Rylan the Tinker. Khamsin does not know what to make of this stranger who accepts her just as she is.

Rylan does more then save Khamsin's life he awakens her passion something that her good husband was unable to do. The attraction is shared but before they can be together they both have something that they must do. Reluctantly they part ways promising that they will come back to each other as soon as they can. But will they be able to keep their promises to each other?

This book was great. It's almost like an adult "Harry Potter" story. This story is full of witches, sorcerers, demons, and magic. Ms. Sinclair has created a very magical world which was a pleasure to step into. Great characters, a well fleshed out storyline combined for a fast-paced read. I highly recommend this book you won't be sorry!

            3 out of 5 stars Predictable romantic.......2005-08-06

I suppose I should start this review by saying that the main thing that keeps me reading a book is its romantic subplot. Along this vein, I give twenty thumbs up for "Wintertide" since the heroine ends up with the right guy. One-fourth of the book through, and you know who ___ is and that she's going to end up with him. I like this kind of predictability in my light reading, thank you. (Who doesn't?)

Of course, predictability has its downside in mediocrity. The secondary characters are ho-hum. The world seems to consist of only four areas: the village, the City, the wild wilderness hills place, and the Sorcerer's stronghold place. Last, but definitely not the least, the dramatic action simply does not work for me. Several things (the heroine's real father, for example) were unloaded just around the end, so you had no opportunity to feel the tension. The climax whizzes past, with little substance and power.

In a nutshell, I'd say this is a book made for people who don't want to have their emotions overturned by betrayals, misunderstandings, and drama among fictional characters. It's mushy, light reading. Perfect for those relaxing sessions...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Classic Fantasy!.......2003-08-12

Khamsin "Kammi" was born when Drucilla, the Captain's daughter, was brutally raped by the nomadic Hill People when they attacked the small town of Cirrus Cove. The Captain refused to let his daughter keep the baby and so it was probably just as well that the healer, Bronya, claimed the babe. Everyone knew that Bronya had some Raheiran, or witch, blood in her and feared as well as respected her for her healing powers. Bronya was careful to bring Kammi up in the old ways, worshipping the three gods and carefully training Kammi in magical arts. Bronya knew that she would have little time to prepare Kammi for the role that she would soon play. For Kammi had been claimed by Tarkir, God of the Land and the Underworld, for his first born son, the Sorcerer of Traakhal-Armin. Bronya held the god off for as long as she could, but eventually knew that her time had come to leave the earth. She placed Kammi in the care of Tavis, the blacksmith who had loved Kammi since she was small. Kammi cared for Tavis, but didn't love him. When Bronya insisted, Kammi reluctantly married Tavis and tried to live like the other villagers.

Kammi was careful to keep her magical implements locked up and to perform the ancient rites when Tavis was safely occupied with his work at the forge. But when an assignation or meeting was issued to her from the Sorcerer just before her eighteenth birthday, Kammi knew that she could no longer pretend to be ordinary. Although Tavis fought bitterly against her continuing her training, Kammi snuck out anyway. On her way home from practice, Kammi ran into Rylan the Tinker on the road, one of her favorite visitors who came infrequently to the village. She found herself watching him and wondering what it would be like to be his wife, but, of course, she was already wed. Kammi breathed a sigh of relief when she reached the eve of her eighteenth birthday without meeting the dreaded sorcerer, but returned home to find her world destroyed. The Hill People had descended upon Cirrus Cove in her absence and killed all the people she held dear - including her husband.

Kammi almost died trying to escape, and would have died if Rylan the Tinker had not come for her, bound up her wounds and persuaded her to live. As Kammi and Rylan traveled toward the great city of Noviiya where she would receive more training for her powers, Kammi became more and more attracted to Rylan. But Rylan never forced anything on her, saying instead that he would take only what she would give. Eventually, Rylan and Kammi become involved, but Rylan must reluctantly depart to take care of some business. He promises to return, but Kammi, despite being involved in intense training, slowly counts the weeks and Rylan still is not there. She knows that she must seek out the Sorcerer's city of Traakhal-Armin on her own and destroy the Orb of Knowledge before more people are killed. But her mentor reminds her before she leaves that she can share the Orb of Knowledge with someone or destroy it if she chooses. Why would she want to share its power - the Sorcerer is evil, isn't he?

Megan Sybil Baker has once again written an enchanting adventure that is well worth the price that you will pay (but is available in ebook format for much cheaper). Kammi was a wonderful character, both vulnerable and strong and it was fun to watch her grow and mature and to realize that everything is not what it seems. Rylan the Tinker is a rather shadowy figure, at first, but readers will quickly realize that he is much more than he seems. As with all of Baker's books, there are a host of other characters that are equally fascinating and fun to get to know, including Nixa, Kammi's cat who definitely had a personality of her own. I loved the in depth treatment of the history and culture of the world where Kammi lived. Their religion was fascinating and the gods get involved in human affairs much like the ancient Greek and Roman gods did. Baker has once again created a well-developed world with plenty of depth for readers to enjoy. And if you liked this book, check out An Accidental Goddess, which is the far-future sequel to Wintertide and continues the battle between the Kiasidira/Sorcerer and his siblings.

            5 out of 5 stars A Magical Fantasy.......2003-05-30

Wintertide won the EPPIE Award for Best Fantasy, and it's easy to see why! This is a great fantasy tale that includes magic, romance, and adventure. There's a great twist that surprised and delighted this reader. Definitely recommended if you like fantasy or even paranormal romance. The far-future sequel, An Accidental Goddess (a sci fi) is great too, and adds on to an already fascinating world of magic and mystery.

            5 out of 5 stars A magical fantasy journey!.......2002-11-10

WINTERTIDE is a highly imaginative, complex tale combining Science Fiction, Fantasy and Romance - although the hero and heroine are separated throughout most of the book, when they do finally come together it is a satisfying joining of two hearts and souls that belong together. I highly recommend WINTERTIDE to readers looking for a fast-paced, unusual, dark and dangerous story about sorcerers, wizards, demons, and the power of love to conquer all.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous epic fantasy.......2002-03-27

Brona the healer claims the unborn child, conceived of violence, as hers. The child Khamsin is born during a storm of the century. Bronya raises the child teaching her the magic until Khamsin turns seventeen. The healer reads the runes interpreting them to mean that Khamsin must immediately marry. Though she does not want a man in her life as she is used to no one except Bronya, Khamsin makes a deathbed promise to her mentor to do so.

Khamsin marries, but her husband and his villagers do not trust her or her power. She is allowed to only heal the sick. As happened when she was conceived, raiders killed most of the villagers. Khamsin escapes, but now knows she must obtain the Orb from a powerful sorcerer and determine what will become of this magical artifact that has led to so many deaths by those who desire to misuse its power.

Fans of epic fantasy adventures will quickly understand why WINTERTIDE is a multiple award-winning novel. The key to the richly textured story line is the depth of the characters and the world that enables the audience to believe in magic especially in a young girl's heart. The plot never loses focus as master magician Megan Sybil Baker casts an enchanting spell that force a one sitting read and a geas to seek other works from this enchantress.

              Book Description

As the U.S.S. Titan ventures beyond the outermost reaches of known space, the telepaths in her crew -- including Diplomatic Officer Deanna Troi -- are overwhelmed by an alien cryof distress, leading the ship to the scene of a shocking act of carnage: a civilization of interstellar "whalers" preying upon and exploiting a familiar species of sentient spaceborne giants.

Appalled but reluctant to rush to judgment, Captain William Riker and his crew investigate, discovering a cosmic spawning ground in a region of active star formation -- the ecosystem for a bewildering array of diverse but similarly vast life-forms. While attempting to negotiate an end to the victimization of these creatures, Riker's crew inadvertently grants them the means to defeat their hunters' purpose...only to learn that things are not exactly as they seem.

              Book Description

In the same way that "The Indigo Children" was a phenomenon that was much talked-about, before the book came out and explained it, "Earth Angels" is a topic of much discussion among spiritually minded people world-wide. Four years ago, Doreen Virtue wrote an article on the topic, and then a chapter in her book, "Healing with the Angels," and then more information in "Healing with the Fairies." Since that time, Doreen has been flooded with letters from people who resonate with the idea, requesting more information.

"Earth Angels" will be the first book devoted to the topic. Doreen will describe the five different types of lightworkers: Incarnated Angels (those who had previous lives as angels, but who are now here as humans); Incarnated Elementals (those whose previous lives were in the elemental kingdom, as fairies, elves, etc.); Starpeople (those who have lived the majority of their past lives on other planets); Walk-In's (those who came from a high spiritual realm and walked-in to another person's life, as that soul gladly exited their body); and Reincarnated Sorcerers, Sorceresses, and Wizards (those whose most recent past life was during Arthurian or Atlantian times, when they practiced high magic).

The book will include dozens of case studies; a fascinating analysis of an extensive survey that Doreen has conducted among people who identify with the five types of Earth Angels; and guidance to help readers to feel happier about their lives, their own idiosyncrasies, and their missions.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing author.......2007-07-26

It is great to finally find someone who writes about all the subjects that I have know about and have experienced first hand. All of her books are very uplifting and informative. We often tend to believe that there is nothing more than meets the eye and nothing is further from the truth. I have since purchased another three of her books.

              5 out of 5 stars Wake up!.......2007-03-09

I was thirteen when I first realised something "weird" about myself. One Sunday morning my grandfather thought it would be a great idea for me to go to church with him, so he had me get dressed and gave me some change for the collection plate. The people at the curch were nice and all, but there was something missing from the experience. After almost an hour of being called a sinner and being reminded over and over again that Jesus was dead, I decided that I had heard enough and ran out of the church! For some reason I knew that I was not a sinner and that the Lord Jesus is not dead. Most importantly, I understood that the life of Jesus is a blueprint: the lord didn't come to show off, but to show us. His teachings should especially resonate with those of us who "know better". This book helps YOU to accept who you are and encourages you to actively seek the Christ within YOURSELF and to assist mother earth and our human brethen at this most crucial time in Gaia's history. Wake up!

5 out of 5 stars Quite an interesting read.......2007-01-13

First, I'd like to say that people who have closed minds should not read and review books of this nature. If you believe in angels, the spiritual world and another realm, then you will find this book as interesting as I did. With God, all things are possible, and I personally believe angels walk among us. I've had at least 3 experiences where an "angel" appeared from nowhere to help me.

For those who think Doreen Virtue is nuts, why do you even read her books then??

2 out of 5 stars Earth Angels... ?.......2007-01-08

I read this book about four years ago and boy, what a trip now looking at it again. It is nice to think about but I wouldn't take it too seriously. Some nice ideas but read it to make up your own mind. Don't bother buying brand new.

5 out of 5 stars Who, Me? You Godda Be Kiddin'!.......2007-01-05

This is an approximate 157-page pocket-sized book, the size of a 4" x 6" photo, great to carry around or place anywhere. The subject matter is incarnated angels and elementals, starpeople, walk-ins, and the wise ones (wizards, shamans, etc.) The concept is that if you feel differently than others and have certain characteristics, you may be one of the above. A 30-item checklist helps you to self-identify based on characteristics and feelings. Further chapter descriptions provide additional details, suggestions, your possible needs, and so on. I would guess that if you're looking at this review, you already suspect you may be different, and may be one of the above beings. Whether you believe in the possibility or not, this is interesting and fun reading.

A further example would be: "...it's very common for Incarnated Angels to carry extra weight on their bodies...not due to overeating, but because they're energetically shielding themselves from fat. They have difficulty losing weight, even with stringent dieting or exercise...they absorb their client's toxic emotions, and their bodies blow up like sponges absorbing water..." (The term "client" is generally referring to a personal or business sense because they often try to help people by listening to everybody's problems.)

The writer, Doreen, is a metaphysical doctor of psychology. She works in the angelic realm and has extensive writing and teaching experience, and clinical practice.
