In Deception on His Mind Sergeant Barbara Havers places herself at the center of an investigation in Essex concerning the mysterious death of a recently arrived immigrant from Pakistan. Although still recovering from the broken ribs and nose (received at the end of In the Presence of the Enemy), Havers convinces herself that she needs to stay on the job in order to help her neighbor Taymullah Azhar and his elfin daughter Hadiyyah who have a familial connection to the dead man. As is typical with Elizabeth George's novels (this is the 10th in a popular and powerful series), the murder and its investigation are the central feature of the story. But in this case they are also the means by which she explores the Pakistani experience in a foreign and not always friendly culture. As Havers herself notes, the food may well have improved in Britain with an increasingly diverse population, but that same population has "engendered a score of polyglot problems." Whether or not the dead man is a victim of a racially motivated crime is only one of the questions Havers tries to sort out. The result, with George's typically complex characterizations and deft plot turns, is a deeply satisfying novel. Fans of Havers's superior officer, Thomas Lynley, and his lady love Helen Clyde will be disappointed as the two are off on their honeymoon. But with Lynley out of the picture, Havers, with her prickly personality, caustic tongue, and sound investigative skills, comes well and truly into her own. Nitpickers might question one aspect of the final denouement--motive and opportunity are securely in place but the means are on the outskirts of unbelievable. Still, the book is a rich and enjoyable one that continues to tickle the imagination well after it has been shelved amidst other favorites. --K.A. Crouch

2 out of 5 stars Exhausting.......2007-09-24

I plowed through this with my boots on. By the middle of the book it was interesting but not an easy read. That would have been ok, except by the time I waded through 600+ pages, I find she just zips up the book. There should have been even more pages! After all this, we are left with unanswered questions. If there is a sequel, I won't bother.

4 out of 5 stars Great Writing.......2007-09-18

Ths is my first Elizabeth George novel and won't be my last. The author is a very talented author and there was great character development. I will admit that I was somewhat disappointed in the ending as there were a lot of loose ends which were not tied up. I am HOPING there will be a sequel to this nvel so I can find out how everything turned out with her wonderful characters.

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-09-11

I love Elizabeth George and her characters never cease to amaze me. The plot can be quite macabre and a lot of the scenes seem so real, it's scary. Great stuff to read!

3 out of 5 stars A Slow 750 Page Mega Novel and Then a Bad Ending, or Essentially No Ending, Yikes!!!.......2007-03-17

This is my first Elizabeth George novel and it was a great disappointment. What was the author thinking? She is a good writer but the structure and length is simply awful here. I think she got caught up with her writing experience and lost sight of what makes a good novel. Somehow a simple police novel became longer than Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, 300 pages longer than Dostoevsky, believe it or not.

The novel opens strongly with a good hook: a murder on a beach on the English east coast. But, then that incident is followed by the long introduction of character after character, each with a detailed introduction. By page 100, the reader starts to think about terminating the read. By page 250 the plot has become clear and the motivation to read the whole 750 page novel has evaporated. Why read another 500 pages when we know who are the bad guys? After that I could not read each and every page. It was a mindless read that would take two or three days, and I skipped forward to page 600 or so where I picked up the story - without missing a heartbeat - and continued to read each and every word. It appeared that I had missed nothing of consequence in my jump over hundreds of pages. The novel ended inconclusively about 150 pages later and my hunch about the outcome was 75% correct. Overall, this was a bad reading experience.

There are many fundamental problems here. The two protagonists are two female police officers but they do not act like police officers. There seems to be no crime scene investigation, and for example, one of them walks around the hotel room of the victim picking up and examining objects at random. Was that room ever investigated properly? There are no police procedures in what is supposed to be a police story. So, that element lacks realism.

Secondly, the level of conversation is at a banal level, where the women use words such as "snigger" and other slang. They have a lot of mindless talk and not much action. Every 50 pages or so there is a sex related incident which I presume that is supposed to keep the reader interested.

There are lots of characters living in the seaside community in the UK, including a large group of Pakistani immigrants. The victim is a Pakistani male so a question is whether or not this is a hate crime. That is a main plot element here. The author handles this well, but again, these sections are far too long and inconclusive.

So, the problem is length, far too long. This is not War and Peace, it is a detective story: 750 pages! And, the primary character, Barbara, a police woman from Scotland Yard is not that sympathetic a character. George's famous Inspector Lynley plays no important role here.

This is a novel that should be 350 pages but somehow survived the edit and was published as a 750 page mega-novel. It is a novel to avoid: 3 stars.

2 out of 5 stars unbelievable ending ruins a decent book.......2006-12-17

*be warned, spoilers ahead* There are plenty of reviews here so mine will be superfluous, but I can't pass up the opportunity to vent about this book. There are lots of good things in her little snapshot of British race relations, small town politics, etc. But as a mystery, the book falls flat with a completely stupid ending. There is no possible way that the murderer could have done the murder as it is described in the book. George has spent considerable (!) time building up a picture of the cloistered existence of these Pakistani women: they rarely leave the house, they are never seen by strange men, etc. etc. etc. and suddenly we're supposed to believe this woman sneaks out of the house to trail a guy around long enough to figure out his habits and routines, then she steals a jet-ski, races across the sea to set up an elaborate trap to murder him while making it appear as an accident (not noticing the other person lurking around watching), and jet-skis home, all unnoticed by her ever-present family members? Give me a break. It's lazy writing and it's insulting to readers to give them a crap ending like that after ALL that build-up.

                    2 out of 5 stars A surprisingly weak effort.......2007-08-30

If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be contrived. The plot is ludicrous, the characters unappealing and the dialogue juvenile (I refer specifically to the scenes of seduction, one involving a pedestal, which I found pathetic and not the least sensual). I was surprised, because I've read other of Ms. Jeffries' books and liked them.

But she gave her lead characters short shrift here....especially the "heroine", who supposedly had matured and grown up in the two years between her abduction and finally coming to confront her abductor, but I saw no evidence of any growth. And nothing about Sebastian (or Morgan) to warrant the interest.

I kept asking myself, as I pushed on through the book, "why did she write this?". Finally I asked a better question..."why am I wasting my time reading this?".

Like others in the many forums here, my tendency over the years has been to avoid posting reviews of books I didn't like, for whatever reason. But I've changed my thinking in that regard.

Unfortunately, this was the book I was attempting to wade through when I made that decision.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and fun.......2007-08-08

Swanlea Spinster #3, the impetuous Julia, comes of age. I absolutely can't give too much of the plot away here, so suffice to say the eloping couple (Julia and Morgan Pryce) that Helena and Danny were pursuing in A Notorious Love did not complete any nuptials. Two years later, Julia is suffering society's backlash against the newly revealed elopement scandal. Breathing ire, she travels to Morgan's home, along with her sister Rosalind and Rosalind's incensed husband Griff Knighton, who is delicious as he stomps and snorts around (A Dangerous Love). She doesn't find Morgan but she finds his twin brother Sebastian, Lord Templemore. He lives a monkish life buried in the countryside, building and finely honing the guns he makes in his devilish forge. (Picture the sheltered Julia walking into `hell' - the forge - and finding Sebastian without his shirt on!) Predictably, sparks fly. Sebastian's hiding a lot of secrets, including Morgan's whereabouts. Devil take her, Julia upsets the delicate balance he's created to deal with everything. I loved watching Julia `upset' Sebastian and make him jump. For that matter, I loved watching him make her squirm, and gasp, and ... well, you'll have to read it. Great reading.

Check out the whole Swanlea Spinster series; Book 1: A Dangerous Love, Book 2: A Notorious Love, Book 3: After the Abduction, Book 4: Dance of Seduction and Book 5: Married to the Viscount.

                    2 out of 5 stars weak.......2006-12-24

I read most of this author's books and in my opinion this one lacked depth or inspiration. I wonder if Ms. Jeffries herself derived any pleasure from writing it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful end to the trilogy.......2006-12-12

This is the third in the Swanlea Spinsters story. Its been two years since baby sister Juliet was kidnapped and held for ransom by the handsome rouge Morgan Pryce whom she believed she was eloping. Until recently it has been kept secret from society about her abduction, now rumors are going round that she was ruined because of a secret elopment that didn't happen. Juliet's chances at a happy marriage are slim as long as people believe the rumors. She has turned down several suitors being unable to forget the man she loved who betrayed her. When her brother in law Griff hires someone to find Morgan Pryce they find out he was the ward of a wealthy nobleman, Sebastian. When the trio arrives at Sebastian's estate Juliet is shocked to find out Sebastian and Morgan are one and the same. Sebastian quickly explains that he is not her former abductor but his twin brother. The truth is Sebastian posed as his brother and did kidnap Juliet, but only because he believed his brother Morgan was being held by Crouch(the same man who had him kidnap Juliet.) Sebastian knows that nothing bad happened to Juliet during her abduction because he kept her safe and protected her from harm and scandal. He would like to marry Juliet, he never forgot her during the last two years, but will protect his brother Morgan at all costs. Morgan is still missing and Sebastian has made deals to get him safely home. If he admits he was Juliet's kidnapper, he will no longer be able to help Morgan.

Even though her brother in law believes Sebastian's story, Juliet knows in her heart that Sebastian was her true kidnapper. She sets a trap to get him to admit it, but he sidesteps all the way. Juliet still loves him but she needs answers, why did he kidnap her and why did he leave her behind. With the help of Rosalind, the two sisters find ways to delay their trip home. Juliet is falling for the rogue all over again, but she will not have a relationship based on lies. Sebastian is terrified of love, but still wants Juliet all the same. Can he trust her with his family secrets and his heart?

This book sizzled with sensuality. I like how Sebastian is not one of these worldly, I'm a gift to women type males who keeps mistresses all over. He is practically a monk, but with Juliet everything is different, he wants her for her, not what she can bring his title, or money. He has plenty. Juliet also could care less for his fortune, she wants love and trust and will settle for nothing less. Together they fit like a hand to a glove, its just good characters and a intriguing, but believable story.

                              Book Description

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery–only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend . . . and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable–and doomed–Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C’baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, twelve Jedi Knights, and fifty thousand men, women, and children will embark–aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel–on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start–until Master C’baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, the successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward . . . and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission’s most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as “Thrawn.” Even Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all-out war for survival against staggering odds–and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn’s unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Star War book tie-in's suffer from the need to absolutely bring in the movie characters, whether needed or not, and this book is a perfect example of it. The plot of the novel has been outlined elsewhere, so I'll just provide my take on this type of novel.

The story itself is mildly interesting and Zahn does the usual pedestrian effort that any author does when they are writing a tie-in novel according to the specifications provided to him or her. Obi-Wan and Anikan are dragged in, as he and the others always are, they do a couple of things that really don't matter, and then leave. Their affect on the story is nill. The rest of the story and the introduction of the Chiss is, as I mentioned before, mildly interesting, but hardly original.

My objection to these stories is the deus ex machine requirement to bring in the main characters - Luke, Leia, Han, et al into every book regardless of whether it makes logical sense. This limits the books because they (the characters) must be shoehorned in no matter what. This makes for awkward story telling at best. Most of the time all you really get is a mediocre, pre-digested book, written by authors who have sold their writing abilities and given up their creativity.

Overall, the genre is hurt by this pabulum that faceless corporate executives think is SF. Get your self-respect back. Read good SF. Start with Iain M. Banks and discover intelligent SF

5 out of 5 stars Insight into historic Star Wars Universe...........2007-09-30

Many writers are part of the Star Wars legacy, but none of them equal the man who first brought Star Wars back to fans everywhere in 1992 with "Heir to the Empire", Timothy Zahn. Zahn returns to the Star Wars universe with his New York Times Bestseller "Outbound Flight", finally telling a story steeped in Star Wars lore.

This is the story of the doomed "Outbound Flight", a project sponsored by Jedi Master C'boath to chart the Unknown Regions for new life or potential threats. Also at stake is the relocation of Jedi from the ravages of the Separatist Wars to rejuvenate a weary, stagnant Jedi Order with flesh blood and new ideology.

However, a shadowy threat lurks in the Unknown Regions, an alien species called the Chiss. Among them is a highly skilled commander known as "Thrawn", who's willing to do what he must in order to protect his people. Dark machinations reach into the Unknown Regions, aimed at destroying the Jedi, and they draw a reluctant Thrawn into a conflict with Outbound Flight that he has no intention of losing.

Zahn's in top form with "Outbound Flight", showing why he's easily one of the best Star Wars writers in the game. His knowledge of George Lucas' creation is impressive, and "Outbound Flight" fits easily into the established "canon", as if it was drawn from Lucas's scripts. Zahn handles these legendary characters and situations with reverence and respect, while making an adventure that's far more than just paying homage.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful - Zahn outdoes himself!.......2007-09-05

This book is probably my new favorite work of Zahn. He is truly a Master. The Thrawn trilogy was my first foray into Star Wars EU novels, and the Hand of Thrawn duology was next. What amazed me was the ability of Mr. Zahn to tie together the threads of those stories, along with Survivor's Quest and Allegiance (connected only after careful perusal)in this one book. The irony of the smuggler's alliance in this, the trilogy, and the later duology was masterful. I liked Card'as as a charachter in the duology, very happy to see him here. I cannot get enough Thrawn either! I really would have like to have seen his character incorporated into the NJO series, but I guess that would have made the battles too short, the war too easy. I can only hope that the character is somehow brought back, or that there is more fiction about him...maybe his rise to power after becoming an imperial? Maybe about his voyages in the unknown regions? This book is wonderful. One word of caution, though. You should probably read the books in order of their release to fully enjoy them to the maximum level, to see what magnificent tapestry that Mr. Zahn has woven for us. This helps you see the characters later, including the some of the races included in the other novel. You also are allowed to see how characters portrayed one way in a later novel came to that way of thinking. Thanks for reading my review, please read this book. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Outbound Flight launches from the pages.......2007-08-17

Timothy Zahn, often considered the Father of Star Wars Expanded Universe, returns to the Galaxy Far, Far Away to detail the story behind Outbound Flight, Jorus C'baoth, and, most importantly, Thrawn. Since he is my favorite author, I definitely couldn't miss this one.

                              Plot:
Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth has come up with the ultimate mission: to send a group of beings out beyond the Republic, to the Unknown Regions to colonize and perhaps penetrate to the next galaxy. After winning approval from the Senate, he begins his mission. Unbeknownst to him, Darth Sidious fears this mission will flush out hidden enemies that the fragmented Republic is not prepared to fight so he sends team to destroy Outbound Flight.
Meanwhile, Jorj Cardas, Maris Ferasi, and Dubrak Quennto flee a Hutt's wrath and end up smack dab in the Unknown Regions at the mercy of the Chiss Defense Fleet, commanded by the mysterious Thrawn who has many schemes up his sleeve.

                              Good:
One word: Thrawn. He is a brilliant military mastermind, able to penetrate people's thoughts and desires and determine rather accurately how they will react to a certain set of circumstances. In my opinion, he is the best part of the book.
Some people aren't fond of how Obi-Wan and Anakin appear in this book, and while they are trivial, I was very impressed with how Timothy Zahn was about to translate Obi-Wan to the written word. Anakin is flat, but what do you expect for a fifteen year old Padawan?
Jorj Cardas is another good character. He is a rather real guy, someone you can sympathize with and relate to. I found his parts more enjoyable in many aspects than any of the others (but part of that was because it was through his parts I learned more about Thrawn).
I enjoyed reading how Maris admired Thrawn. It would have been cool had Zahn spent more time on a perhaps romance between the two (although that would probably have disrupted the storyline and dragged it down some).
Zahn also did a grand job with the plot (minus a few hiccups at the beginning). He weaves the story between the Jedi (Lorana and Obi-Wan), Jorj, and Doriana, Palpatine's duplicitous aide. Through their eyes, we get to see how they all intertwine and the fate of the Outbound Flight. The ending is powerful, bittersweet and reminiscent of Revenge of the Sith (I half wanted to cry at the end!). Although I discovered partially how the tragedy unfolded (but then, everyone had a vague idea), I read on intrigued and hoping that it wouldn't yield the grim results I speculated.
Lastly, Zahn does a great job with the dialogue, the pacing, and other narration. Obi-Wan talked like Obi-Wan. Palpatine was Palpatine. His own characters (Jorj, Jorus, Thrawn, etc.) are more "malleable" in the sense that his books are the ones in which they primarily turn up, but their characters are pretty much the same as in other materials. Zahn knows how to evenly pace his story, not jolting you through many, many years over 5 pages and slowing to a halt to cover a few days in 200+ pages. Further, his narration is delightful to read.

                              Bad:
I hadn't thought that Jorus C'baoth would have been a jerk. I understand why his clone was crazy, and I guess I knew that he was likely crazy, but somehow, I expected Jorus to be different than in this portrayal.
Also, I found Lorana a little difficult as a character. Here, she has been C'baoth's Padawan for 10+ years, putting up with his arrogance, self-importance, and rudeness, and she becomes a mediocre Jedi? I would have thought she would have been as arrogant, self-important, and rude as her Master, not a wimpy doormat!
Lastly, although it is important that Thrawn learn Basic, the whole concept of the language lessons at the beginning is a little corny.

                              Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence:
Typical Star Wars made-up "colorful language" or alluded to. Maris and Quennto are said to share a room. Violence is typical Star Wars fare (although aliens are told to have been cut nearly in half by laser fire and are used as human shields).

                              Overall:
Zahn, pat yourself on the back. Another job well done! My only complaint? Where's the story about Thrawn's rise to power?

4 out of 5 stars Some parts good Some parts that could have been better.......2007-08-07

In Survivor's Quest Luke and Mara find the remains of the Outbound Flight. This is of course what this book is about. Jedi Master C'Baoth wants to take a ship off for colonization and answers questions raised on in Survivor's Quest. After years of debating the Jedi Council have finally agreed to it but they want Obi Wan to accompany C'Baoth because they are concerned about C'Baoth. After reading the book the Jedi were right to be concerned. C'Baoth was as crazy in live as he was as a Clone in his "afterlife". The people chosen for this colonization is all have children who are strong in the Force and C'Baoth wants to take them from their parents and train them personally whether their parents want to give them up or not. The book puts an interesting light on how Jedi are brought into the Jedi Order and separated from their families without ever knowing them that has never been explored I had hoped it would be even more explored in this one. The Jedi except for Anakin are brought into the the Jedi order as babies their for they never actually get to make the decision for themselves if the Jedi was really where they wanted to be. I really though this was where the story was going to go because we have one Jedi Lorana who's been sensing someone in the Force following her only to learn its her brother Dean who has always resented his sister because of the way his parents placed Lorana in an exalted place and always above Dean. I had hoped this would be explored a little more on both sides like how Lorana felt about meeting a brother she never knew or ponder things a bit but there's none of that which disappointed me. Sure the book was still really good but I think it would have been even better to have explored this gray area in the Jedi. She could have had a little bit of a struggle about learning about a brother the way we've seen Anakin struggle with his own mother and would have made for an interesting conversation at least to the two discuss it before Anakin got off the ship.

In this new, general introduction to the Enneagram, Rohr and Ebert show that the Enneagram was developed in Egypt by the Desert Fathers and rediscoverd by a Francisican missionary to the Moslems at the turn of the 14th century.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing book.......2007-02-21

This was a wonderfully well written and insightful book...explores the depths of the enneagram in relation to one's Christian life.

5 out of 5 stars Enneagram hit the spot for me!.......2007-01-05

This book hit my personality type totally! With jaw-dropping accuracy, it brought my natural inclinations to light as a typical personality type. All of a sudden, I was not alone and there was reason for my tendencies. This book was great because it bridges the gap between your natural inclinations and where you should go as a Christian. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Enneagram book written from a Christian perspective.......2007-01-01

This updated version of DISCOVERING THE ENEAGRAM is truly a gem. It does a good job of explaining Enneagram theory and an excellent scholarly job of looking at the history of the Enneagram. In addition, its descriptions of the 9 Enneagram types are well done and insightful. Each of these sections also contains many interesting historical references to important figures and event in Christian history.

I have read a lot of Enneagram books including some that were written from a Christian perspective. Within the Christian subset of books, I feel this one is "hands down" the very best. It is also in general agreement with Riso and Hudson, Helen Palmer and Sandra Maitri on the characteristics of the types. These are three of the biggest names in Enneagram study and each has a useful perspective to offer.

Rohr sees the Enneagram as both a useful psychological and spiritual tool for self growth. Psychologists and spiritual directors will really appreciate his rigor and depth. Another Christian author who uses the Enneagram for spiritual direction is James Empereur. His book THE ENNEAGRAM AND SPIRITUAL DIRECTION is also quite good.

If you are a psychologist you may also want a copy of PERSONALITY TYPES by Riso and Hudson. This book covers the 9 developmental levels of each type in detail and the associated psychological pathologies. For a general audience, THE WISDOM OF THE ENNEAGRAM by the same authors may be better because it has a more broad focus on theory and keeps the detail on each developmental level to a minimum.

Another point worth mentioning is that this updating version of Rohr's DISCOVERING THE ENNEAGRAM (retitled) covers new discoveries about the history of the Enneagram. This includes its use and possible origins in Early Christianity. This section is well-researched and you can find a lot of good references here on the history of the Enneagram.

                                    5 out of 5 stars The Enneagram - A great life-tool.......2006-03-04

I first discovered the Enneagram from Richard Rohr's earlier work, both the first edition of this book and some tapes. It has been life changing for me and I highly recommend it.

This book takes a very clear stand as spiritual approach, so if psychology alone is your goal, you may not like this.

Even with its religous tone, I find this a great life tool. Not only has it been so helpful to me in self healing and discovery, it has helped me so much in the workplace and social arenas.

Richard Rohr is a singular person and I recommend almost all of his works!

The Enneagram is a beautiful book that explores the depths of our original sin and Jesus' redemptive work in that.
