4 out of 5 stars Candlemaking and Murder.......2006-10-24

Harrison Black, owner of At Wick's End, decides to have a table at the Founder's Day celebration in New Conover, NC, to try to increase his business in the face of possibly being run out of business. Gretel Barnett has recently opened Flickering Lights and had vowed to put At Wick's End out of business.

At the Founder's Day celebration, Harrison doesn't hear the shot that kills Gretel, but he is soon the prime suspect of the shooting.

Although Harrison would rather leave the investigating to the police, he is soon pulled in to help clear his name. In the process he gets pulled in deeper and deeper. Can he uncover the killer and save At Wick's End?

I thought was a great installment in the candlemaking series. I really like Harrison Black. I don't know anything about candlemaking, so I always feel like I learn something when I read the books in this series.

This cozy series is wonderfully set in a small town. The author has captured the feel of a southern small town. The interaction between Harrison and Eve, his employee who was thrust upon him when he inherited At Wick's End, is progressing at a very believable pace.

I look forward to reading more in this series. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very cozy.......2006-08-04

I recently stumbled upon this series, and I have really enjoyed it. The characters are sympathetic, and it has been enjoyable getting to know them. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading cozies.

5 out of 5 stars Burning brightly . . . .......2006-02-16

As many times as I tried (honest!) I just couldn't quite warm up to the author's much-appreciated previous series-The Lighthouse Inn mysteries-set in the mountains of North Carolina.

The premise of a candle making shop sounded interesting, though, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did. This third book in the series is a winner, hands down. It's still in North Carolina, but in Micah's Ridge, a small town on the Gunpowder River.

Harrison Black has inherited not only a small shopping center from his aunt, but also her dearly-loved candle-making shop, At Wick's End. As he gets his feet wet in learning the business and trying to keep the books for River's Edge in the black. As always, there are the other shop owners and their personal problems to deal with, along with a somewhat contentious customer and-good grief! Competition rears its ugly head when another candle shop opens just a couple of miles away.

Gretel Barnett seems to want to run Harrison out of business, so although he'd not planned to have a booth at the New Conover Founder's Day Celebration, he can hardly leave the field to his competitor, now can he? Unfortunately, Gretel ends up dead, and Harrison is named as the killer!

What follows is an intriguing look at life in a small town, with its rampant gossip mills. Ups and downs-including a former lady friend of Harrison's-and other complications ensue before finally, with the help of several of his tenants, Harrison traps the guilty party.

I'm looking forward to the next episode in this delightful series. Hope it's soon!

4 out of 5 stars Who Extinguished the Competition?.......2005-11-10

There's competition moving into Micah's Ridge, North Carolina. Gretel Barnett has moved into town and is opening Flickering Lights not even two miles from Harrison Black's store. In an effort to increase traffic, he decides to set up a booth at the annual Founder's Day festival in nearby New Conover.

On the day of the festival, he is surprised to see Gretel setting up a table not too far from his own. The two get into a loud argument, but Harrison tries to think nothing of it. Until Gretel is shot, however. Naturally, he finds himself the chief suspect, especially when an eyewitness says she saw him throw away the gun. Too make matters worse, the witness is the wife of the editor of the local paper, so naturally the paper proceeds to paint Harrison in the worst light possible.

With the customers fleeing At Wick's End because of the notoriety, Harrison reluctantly begins to investigate. One of the first suspects he turns up is Mrs. Jorgenson. Even worse, when he tries to talk to his best customer about the case, she gets mad and storms off. Has he just made a bad situation worse?

As if all this weren't enough, Harrison's ex-girlfriend Becka is back in his life, turning to him when someone starts stalking her. Is there really someone after her? Who? Is this one case too many for Harrison to solve?

After the disappointing second book in the series, I'm happy to report the series is back on track. The plot in this novel is strong and once again has the forefront. The killer is a little obvious with several major clues pointing to the villain, but the story is strong enough to keep the reader engaged even once they've figure it out.

Harrison continues to be a wonderful main character. His quick temper and bluntness are easy to identify with and create some nice complications as he tries to get information out of suspects who have no desire to cooperate. Unfortunately, several series characters only make brief appearances in this volume, especially potential love interest Erin. Those who do appear continue to be likable, and the suspects are interesting if not quite as well defined as they might have been.

As always, Tim Myers provides a quick, easy read. My biggest complaint is that the book felt like it needed one more edit. A few things fell through the cracks in the race to resolve things for the climax. The season also seemed to change from fall to winter over a couple days, but that could just be me. One more pass through the book would have smoothed out these minor but annoying problems.

This book is a light, quick reads. Nothing too deep, but perfect if you want a couple hour's escape.

Book Description

Dear Jack,

I may be a rough, tough solider of fortune but I've me my match!

I'm in Central America on a no-win job and regretting every minute. A woman named Letty Madden hired me to find her missing brother. I'd figured this prim and proper Texas postmistress would run and hide when I named my price: one night. I was wrong.

I swear the woman is my punishment for never giving a damn about anyone. She's as stubborn as a mule and soft and sweet . . . and hell, buddy, I'm in big trouble. Getting out alive is the least of my problems.

2 out of 5 stars Sooner or Later.......2007-09-01

This was not the usual Debbie MaComber book. I read her books because I am sick of reading "sex" novels and this one was just a tad too graphic for me. She could have handled the first chapter or two much better than what she did.

2 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure-romance.......2005-08-22

This is second book in the Deliverance Company mercenary series, between Someday Soon (Cain's story) and Moon Over Water (Jack's Story), about unscrupulous but likable heros who rescue victims of third world terrorists. I wish I had realized that this was a series so I could have avoided reading the books out of order!

Adventure romances are a refreshing change of pace for me, and I really found myself on the edge of my seat while reading. The torture of victims and killings were told in rather gruesome detail, but all-in-all, an interesting and exciting story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent as usual.......2004-06-18

I found this book to be almost spell binding could hardly put it down. I would also love to read Jack's story and am curious about when it will be out. Ms Macombers books are just great love them all.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, exciting, I 'm ready for the next one on Jack........1999-07-20

I love to read a book you can get involved in along with the characters. Someday Soon and Sooner or Later are those type of books, but I am left to wander what will happen to Jack? Is there a woman out there for him? Please write him a happy ever after he deserves one. Better Late Than Never?

3 out of 5 stars it's classic macomber.......1999-02-08

the plot is the usual, but i really find the ending amirable, just that i wish i knew what exactly happened to Jack... it's so irritating to have loose ends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2006-07-17

I love this book so much!!! Heartland books rock! It's awesome and very cool how they use all those herbs to cure the horses! I would love to do something like that for a job. It's amazing!!! I love her book and recommend them to everyone. Not just 9-12 year olds. I know someone who is 17 and she loves them! Of course, she goes through them really quickly, but she really likes them, and I do too!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Yet!.......2003-08-18

Amy is working hard, getting up early in the morning and sleeping late at night. This has been going on ever since Tim, Amy's father bought her and Lou Storm. Storm is a beautiful Trakehner x Thoroughbred, and was bred for competition. He is completely unsuited to a place like Heartland. With so many horses to help at Heartland, Amy starts stressing out to the point of where she almost hit a horse. In the meantime, she was slowly working with Willow, a 14hh pony who was beaten since she was weaned. Amy is the only one she truly trusts. While at a show, Willow gets an injury and won't let anyone near her. Amy realizes then that she can't keep going on like this with Storm and Heartland. The rest is up to you to find out, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

She saw him in the shadows.  She felt him watching her.  She knew he was going to get her...

The killer always left a signature on his victims...an X carved in their flesh.  But he'd spent the last twenty years in a mental hospital.  Long enough for the world to forget him.  But not long enough for him to forget the rich old woman who had him committed--or her pretty granddaughter.

    Now he's been set free.

Ellie Duveen was busy running her own restaurant and tenderly watching over her fragile grandmother.  Then she met former cop Dan Cassidy, the owner of a local vineyard, and Ellie's hectic life slowed just enough to let her fall in love.

So Ellie didn't notice when police found a dead body marked with a grisly X.  She only felt someone watching her.  Following her.  And as a terrifying secret came back from the past to haunt her, Ellie needed an ex-cop's instincts and more.  She needed her own unshakable courage to outsmart a killer's deadly, twisted plan.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "Sooner or later" is a step back from her previous........2005-11-09

I wanted to enjoy this one, especially since it came just after "Now or Never", which was a good novel(One of Adler's few). The mistakes in this one though are what ultimately brings it down. One of the previous reviewers pointed out a big plot hole, but that wasn't the most egregious blunder. Adler has Lottie(who supposedly knows how to use a computer) confusing URLs with an e-mail address. The romance between Dan and Ellie is OK, but the scenes with Buck are painfully badly written, and I was hoping to it would be over soon. The whole Buck as a werewolf metaphor was also strained and was needless. Overall, A painful step back for Adler, but not as bad as say...Fortune is a Woman or Property of Lady.

5 out of 5 stars Nail-Biting Suspense Mixes With Sensuous Romance .......2005-02-23

Elizabeth Adler is one of those wonderful authors whose books always satisfy me. SOONER OR LATER falls into her group of romantic suspense novels that feature a strong female lead, a dashing cop (in this case, newly retired and having purchased a California vineyard) and a psychopathic killer obsessed with the female. What could be trite in the hands of a lesser writer becomes engrossing and spellbinding with Adler thanks to clever plotting, interesting back story on the characters, and likeable supporting characters.

Ellie Duveen is a chef, trained in France, and owner of a charming French cafe where she cooks, waits tables, keeps the books, does whatever needed to become highly successful. When our fiercely independent heroine crosses paths with the retired New York cop who has moved to California to start a wine-making business, the sparks are electric. But can two people from such different worlds connect? Will the city girl be able to find happiness with a man who has had enough of city life and only wants the quiet and solitude of his vineyard? You bet, and the predictable path to romance makes for a highly enjoyable read.

A psycho from the past, grisly murders, long-buried memories, a doting grandmother, and exquisite French cooking make this a most enjoyable novel that will not only have you on the edge of your seat with suspense but reveling in the romance as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of Elizabeth.......2003-10-07

The story of Ellie Duveen will keep you reading all the time, but the books goes out of the story so many times that has parts really boring, it has two mistakes that could be written in other way, for example if a man is a pervert, completely insane, dangerous, and the family doesn't have money to keep him at the mental hospital, the hospital just let him free even if he attacked one guard?
Take this book to your next flight and maybe you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars This book reads slowly.......2003-07-03

I felt as though I were constantly saying "get on with it", yet by the end of the book I did realize it is a good story. Ellie Duveen was too young to remember the night someone tried to hurt her Miss Lottie. Her parents dead, Ellie is raised by "Miss Lottie", which is how she refers to her grandmother, and loves her grandmother with a protective and respectable love. But some things are better left unremembered in this story. Ellie runs a cafe of her own in town, where she is sometimes cook, waiter and server all at once, but she loves it. Her life is simple and, she feels, complete. Then she meets Dan, an old school chum, and there is romance in the air. There is also something else in the air that the reader is totally unprepared for. With this mystery thriller, the author has a real flair for surprise.

4 out of 5 stars My first Adler Book........2003-06-22

This was my first Adler book. And although I am a huge Nora Roberts fan and have been for years, I must say that I truly enjoyed reading this book. Sooner or Later has a lot of story behind the story if that makes sense. Ellie's character is strong and bold. And I really liked Dan, the ex-New York cop. I loved the description and detail Adler gives to everything to make it come to life on each page. The only thing I didn't like about this book was it seems to go back and forth a lot, which is not bad at all but just something I am not used to reading. It was a very fast read. I read this book in two days and I was a little left with wanting more! I would highly recommend this book and River's End by Nora Roberts.

      1 out of 5 stars A little creepy.......2006-08-01

I found this book and its sequel slightly disturbing even as a kid. It seemed to be encouraging really adult behavior from its 13-year old character. Even though I was close to her age, sex with a 17-year old was something I knew was not a good choice! The movie is slightly less disturbing as it ends with a kiss, but it seemed anything but innocent and sweet to me. It seemed like a reflection of 1970s attitude on casual sex and dating. It may seem kitchsy and cute in retrospect, but I don't think I'd want a child that age watching it these days.

5 out of 5 stars This is what puppy love is all about........2006-04-30

Summary: Jessie Walters deceives a 17 year old boy when he meets her for the first time. The deception is compounded by her mature appearance, and the lies 13 year old Jessie tells. Jessie must reveal her deception to Michael, but will he ever forgive her?

Critique: Oh wow! This book really was awesome. The voice the authors used is so sincere and genuine. Feelings come alive with vibrant details and fervent accuracy. It's hard not to fall in love with Jessie and Michael.

The author takes me back to the time I was a teenager and blue jeans were sky blue. Hair was teased and feathered, and bright colors popped out of clothes like rainbows pop out in a misty sky.

The authors write with a dream-like quality that captures the reader's imagination. Jessie is a typical girl, blundering through adolescence as she faces the reality of her place in the world. Her innocent crush is breathtaking and realistic. Teens will understand her feelings and realize the importance of honesty.
      Great, clean fun.

Activity: This is a great choice for a teen book talk or discussion group. Topics would include dating practices, appearances, maturity, parental roles, intimacy, and even age of consent. Character development, sensory details, and narrative voice are all aspects of this novel worth analyzing with a literary group. While this story takes place in the 80's and early 90's, the experience is universal. Teens will enjoy sharing their own experiences with honesty and deception in the name of affection. Adults will reminesce.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for any age.......2006-02-27

This book was awesome to read as a youth growing up. Growing up in Yonkers, NY where the movie was filmed, it was even more exciting. The story line was true to life and discusses many issues of young adulthood. Every pre -teen should read their work, it makes learning life lessons a little easier. Rent the movie, Rex Smith is very handsome!

      5 out of 5 stars I remember every detail.......2005-02-18

I must have read this 15 times. It is the perfect young adult book and you are missing out if you don't read it. And your daughter will be missing out if you don't get it for her.

5 out of 5 stars Wow What a book and movie.......2004-01-05

              Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This title is very thorough in expounding upon the different names of both angels and demons. However, it has a major flaw in that it relies heavily on fictional accounts, such as Milton, to collaborate its data. Therefore, I cannot recommend it for serious study. Additionally, following the tradition of most dictionaries, the descriptions are rather terse.

For mere entertainment it is adequate, but that's all.

Has probably most of the angels known to man throughout history and from all cultures and beliefs. Some more information about some of the main ones would have been helpful. A good reference if you are into angels.

5 out of 5 stars A Hefty Appetizer For The Budding Theologian.......2007-04-30

If you're like me and are curious about the oddities of religion this book delivers plenty for the price. It is very expansive, especially in the eyes of a theological novice. But while others who have more experience may know its limitations, for me the book is a joy! I've become more acquainted (than I had previously thought possible) with the mysterious beings that dwell in the background of most religions. I found myself not only checking the familiar names but being drawn almost immediately to the lesser known beings. One of my favorites is Nisroc: An Assyrian god, then a ruling angel in Milton's Paradise Lost, and finally the chief of cuisine of Hell! There are many cases of deities changing to angels, angels to deities, and both into devils. All of this and full page page illustrations from old masters like of Durer, Blake, and Dore. It really doesn't matter if you're a skeptic, scholar, beginning theologian, or occultist - I would recommend this wonderfully easy-to-use work to any of these! Bravo Mr. Davidson!

I first discovered, Dictionary of Angels when I owned a small angel emporium. This is an actual dictionary with incredibly detailed descriptions of every angel imaginable. It is also an incredible book to read and learn about the angels throughout history. I still go to this book as a reference when I write about the angels, have questions about which angel is in charge of what ever I am curious about. Great book. I usually do not leave reviews unless the book is really moving or has some above standard substance. This is no exception. This book is top shelf in my library, and that's high praise! Blessings in the Mire

5 out of 5 stars If you don't have it, get it.......2007-03-20

When I first became interested in fallen angels I had a hard time finding information about them, especially online where a lot of information was on badly-designed black background/red text sites or part of a game verse.

The Dictionary of Angels is the most helpful at-a-glance angel books I've ever come across - most of what armchair demonoligists or hobbyists could want to know is contained within its pages. It doesn't have everything, but it's an excellent place for anyone to start their research. Highly recommend.
