Anne Bishop's debut novel, Daughter of the Blood, is like black coffee--strong, dark, and hard on delicate stomachs. Within the Blood (a race of magic-users), women rule and men serve, but tradition has been corrupted so that women enslave men, who seek to destroy their oppressors. Female children are violated before they can reach maturity; men are tortured and forced to satisfy witches' sexual appetites.

Bishop's child heroine, Jaenelle, is destined to rule the Blood, if she can reach adulthood. Her power is hidden; her family believes her mad. Saetan, High Lord of Hell and most powerful of the Blood males, becomes Jaenelle's surrogate father and teacher. He cannot protect her outside Hell, where he rules. She refuses to leave Terreille, risking herself to protect or heal other victims of violence. Can Daemon, Saetan's estranged son, keep her safe from the machinations of the evil High Priestess? Or will he lose his battle to control his destructive urges and endanger her?

Readers may find some aspects of Bishop's world confusing; not least that most of the good guys live in Hell. But her protagonists are compelling, sympathetic characters who overcome terrible adversity. If you like Anne Rice or Laurell K. Hamilton, try this one. --Nona Vero

Book Description

Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her web of dreams and visions. Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence-and corruption.

Whoever controls the Queen controls the darkness. Three men-sworn enemies-know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love-and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining...

Dodgy in the same way that the Gor books are, just from the viewpoint of the other sex, presumably. Although if they are supposed to be soft porn, that may be the point? This, however, is probably why a lot of the presumably pretty close to exclusively female audience likes this book. Only get it, if that is what you want.

*MATURE CONTENT*

A witch on the edge of madness has a vision that the witch of all witches shall finally enter the world. A daughter of the Jeweled Blood who will call to account the many perversions that have been perpetuated by her people. That was seven centuries ago.

After all that time, a mysterious child wanders the world, treading paths that even the most experienced of the Blood find hard to imagine. She is innocent, yet wary. Known only as "Jaenelle," her power is remarkable but dangerously untamed. Her hunger for knowledge and friendship overwhelm young and ancient alike. Just being in the room with her makes most people want to dedicate their lives to her.

With all the support offered to Jaenelle, it is the people to matter most that may destroy her. It is a matter of time before her future is influenced by the people in her life. The staggering question is whether it will be those with pure intent, or will she be shattered by evil?

Anne Bishop's worlds are intricately amazing. She weaves her dark imagination in unexpected ways, leading readers through completely original fantasy tales.

In this novel, the first of "The Black Jewels Trilogy," the roles of her characters are well defined, and the plot moves forward at a brisk pace, only slowing when the reader needs to catch a breath. There is, however, a strong element of perversion that may upset sensitive--even some less sensitive--readers. Various, sometimes graphic, forms of rape and mutilation to both males and females occur throughout the book. It is not celebrated by the "good guys" at all, but it is ingrained in their current culture. These are the "perversions" brought about by the Blood, and which the prophesied Queen of Witches, known as Witch, is supposed to heal.

This is a difficult novel to review, as the storytelling is excellent, but the story being told is so vicious that many readers will be disturbed. Bishop paints a violated world in need of rescue, but one wonders if this is a world too far gone for hope.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, exotic....and brilliant.......2007-07-28

What I love about fantasy and sci fi is that it doesn't have any limits. However despite that, fantasy novels often fall victim to a proscribed universe populated by stereotypical heroes and villians, races and monster, magic and myth. Daughter of the Blood is so different from fantasy orthodoxy that it is hard to believe that this was all created in Anne Bishop's head.

Daughter of the Blood doesn't waste any time letting you test the waters and acclimating to the temperature, you are immersed from the beginning in a dark, fantastical reality filled with cruel and spiteful Blood Witches, who rule over equally sadistic, yet broken blood males. Society is in decay under the grip of the corrupting influence of the Witch Queen, who seeks to extend her rule over the whole of the realm. Proud and unbroken, Daemon Sadi, known as the Sadist refuses to bow to the Queens who have bound him with a ring of obedience and forced him to be little more than a man whore for the Queen's favored. His half brother, Lusivar yaslana, is similary bound, yet lives in even more torturous conditions.
Both of them yearn for the hope of the one witch prophesized to free them and end the evil tyranny of the blooded witch queens. There is hope. A young girl with the power to leap from realm to realm appears. Unschooled and raw, Jaenelle could be the one that can save them.

The world that is spun from Bishop's intricate web is richly detailed. Dark and exotic, tinged with brutal sensuality. It is not for the weak hearted, there is very real brutality here, but also there is a sweetness, a purity that radiates from the heart of the tragic protagonists. The characters heartbreakingly true and engrossing and instantly attractive.

I must say that I didn't think that I would like this book by the premise, but with such high praise I gave it a shot, and I am so very, very glad that I did. Bishop does just about everything just right. The world IS fantastical, and the caste system of magic it is built on is distinctive. She strikes just the right balance between story and characterization, and her characters are singular and defined.

This is a brilliant work of fantasy, and I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter of the Blood: The Black Jewels Trilogy.......2007-07-12

This Trilogy - how can I separate one from the other - is one of the best works of fiction I have read. Ms Bishop has her hand on the pulse of problems on our planet and she weaves a tale that subtlely deals with those problems. For the first time in years, I've stayed awake all night to finish a book.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Violent Fantasy with Love and Humour.......2007-05-05

True, the Black Jewels Trilogy is a very dark fantasy trilogy with a hint of bondage. Especially the first book has a violent theme. People are being hurt, abused, whipped and even raped. But somehow this magnificent writer succeeds despite these scenes of horror to make it a story about hope, of doing the right thing, and most of all about love. Fatherly love, brotherly love and the love between a man and a woman. It is just wonderful.

The characters are fun, warm, scary and lovable all at the same time and impossible to forget once you get to know them. The trilogy as a whole gives you an equal amount of tragedy, love, hurt and laughter. A painful but pleasurable read. It is not a book for children and neither for the squeamish readers. But I will recommend them to any one else.

In my opinion. this trilogy as well as the sequel "Dreams Made Flesh" are the best fantasy books I have ever read and I look thoroughly forward to reading the next book in the series which is scheduled for release in 2008.

And a note about the names of the characters: Saetan, Daemon, Lucivar. Do not be fooled or scared. Remember there is also a Lady Angelline - in other words, these books are not, I repeat NOT about worshipping the devil. The names just give it all a twist.

Read the books - and make sure to buy them as well as they are the sort of books that you will want to reread every once in a while.

Yeah, the storyline is stale (Sherrilyn Kenyon did it a bit better) but Ms. Showalter did an amazing job of making me forget once I had the book in my hands that this was not an original. Some moments were true laugh-out-loud funny. I dub this book extended foreplay. Read it and you'll be fanning yourself in no time.

3 out of 5 stars Had possibilities but would be better as a short story.......2007-02-05

Gena Showalter's book is one of those books you read where you think "this is an opportunity missed". The basic premise, that a warrior has been trapped in a box and has to obey the commands of the woman that owns the box, which ends up being passed to many different people over more than a millennium, has quite a lot of possibilities. What might this warrior Tristan have learned from different cultures over this time, especially when we discover that he's actually from another planet? What does he think when ending up in the possession of the owner of an antiques shop in small-town America? How does he cope with shopping in the mall, working in the shop, communicating with other 20th century Americans?

Sadly all these opportunities for interest weren't realised. Instead most of the interaction between Julia Anderson, the rather average woman, and the amazingly dishy Tristan, were about love and seduction. Now his job is technically a pleasure slave so we know that he's probably reasonably good at this, but I felt that the book was hinting that Julia saw him differently and was trying to treat him as a human being rather than a slave. This didn't really come across very well to me, though. And he fell in love with her surprisingly quickly. There was also the incongruity of him supposedly having to agree to her every wish but he actually stood his ground against her a number of times - I wasn't entirely sure how this worked with the Curse he was under to obey the owner of the box.

There are some amusing moments (he seemed to like conquering telephones) and I liked the heroine's ordinariness but somehow there wasn't enough meat to this story and I felt myself wanting to skim some passages to get to more action. The plot was pretty thin and the characterisation rather wooden. This would have made a pretty decent short story but it didn't have enough oomph in it to keep me glued for a full length novel.

This was definietly one of those books that I couldn't put down. Funny and surprising! I read this book in about 2 days and that was only because I couldn't read it while working, but boy every spare chance I got I read it. Definitely a keeper!

      5 out of 5 stars Pleasure Slave.......2006-08-10

Pleasure Slave takes place in Sante Fe, New Mexico. It involves Tristan, a warrior from another planet, and Julia Anderson, an antique dealer. Tristan is cursed to become a love slave for refusing to love a witch. Julia buys the box wherein Tristan now resides. The results are some fun, sexy, exciting events while they fall in love.
A great read with a little tie in to the Stone Prince, an earlier novel.

PLEASURE ON THE RUN is six sensational stories where twists and turns and the innate irony of life take on new meaning. It soars from the explosive twisting "Bloody Thighs" to the loving beauty of "Fine Love Garments", through the emotional uproar of "The Latest Deadlines" and "Fable of a Universe" to the stinging reversals of "Ready Now" and the prophetic "Personal Slave".

Very easy reading. Thoughts flow and amazing descriptions. I couldn't put the book down because you just wanted to know what will happen in the story.

The characters are people I can relate too, with all of their odd emotions and fears. But the twists in the plots are really unexpected like in "Bloody Thighs" ...which is one of my favorite stories. Personal Slave is funny , but defintely makes a statement. I definitely recommend this book. It was so good now my pals want to borrow the book.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-06-15

I was given this book of short stories as a gift and took it along on a business trip with me. From the moment I opened the book, I could not put it down. It is written with such imagination that I was very sorry when it was over. The author needs to be applauded for what I consider to be an fantastic work. Thank you for writing it.

4 out of 5 stars Try Giving It a Title.......2005-05-12

What title would you give to this book of short stories (after you've read them, of course)? Here are two hints:(1)The stories are written in a sparkling style that will tickle your reading palate. (Try "Pleasure.") (2)The stories are short, varying in length from bite-size snacks to gourmet meals. In either case, you'll get a kick out the clever surprise endings that'll give you repeated satisfaction without endless page turning. (Try: "On the Run.")

        5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure To Read.......2005-05-03

The enjoyment of this book is derived from the irony of the plot lines and characterizations. I was compelled to finish each story to see how the protaganist solved a dilemma. Each character has a flaw and the author succinctly exposes the weakness and then allows the reader to discover how this person will rise above or be consumed by the flaw.
I especially loved the simplicity of the short story, "The Latest Deadlines." The heroine, Mary, frustrated by her limitations learns she does have an attribute that can allow her to succeed. It is a story that starts with anger and ends with warmth and charm.
This is the kind of book that is great to read on the beach, on a plane or just for plain fun.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Simple reading.......2005-04-23

If you are traveling by airplane, train, subway , bus ,waiting at a gate in an airport, and you want to get to the end of the short story before you arrive at your destination. This is a great book to devoured in the shortest amount of time. I highly reccomend it .

A New York Times Bestselling Author

At first glance, Flint McClelland looks just like any other scruffy street performer. But the clear notes coming from his gleaming flute evoke emotions and memories in his audience like nothing else can. If his listeners didn't know any better -- they would swear it's magic. If Flint heard this, he would just smile and nod, because it is magic. And as he wanders the nation, searching for something that America lost a long time ago, he gathers a group of special people, who are drawn into his quest to restore a lost spirit of America.

Aging hippie street performer, Flint McLelland misses 1963 and desperately wants to see a return to the sixties. As he plays baby boomer golden oldies on his flute to earn loose change, Flint wanders the United States in search of sacred icons that represent the "Age of Aquarius".

Soon Flint gathers followers, mostly renegades, lost since the counterculture collapsed when the summer of love turned into the summer of riots that ended his cherished decade. He informs his aging flower horde that once he accumulates all the artifacts, the sixties will re-blossom stronger than ever. The evil scientist the Logician known in psychiatric wards as Dr. Lojia captures the hero. Logician insists that the flutist is patient Gerrard Hammond struggling to come back from a delusional trip into the past of his mind.

WINDOWPANE is an intriguing drama that leaves the audience to wonder if Flint is a mental case never recovered from drugs or a Pied Piper locked away to abort his tune. The tale provides a nostalgic look at the sixties, but not through rose colored glasses as some bad karma such as overdoses, riots, Nam, and bombings haunt the followers. Though well written and engaging especially for boomers, the tale never quite lights the reader's fire to let their hair down along with Mary down Penny Lane, but his is still a haunting fantasy trip

                              Description:
When evaluating the instantaneous rate of solar heat gain through a window, it is essential to know the shaded area, if any, of the glazing. This is a typical standard drill, which is frequently carried out for conventional windows, which have the glass panes parallel to the building exterior wall. Sometimes, and for architectural or other reasons, the glass may be fixed in a vertical but horizontally rotated position; i.e. non-parallel to the wall. This may help to rationalize the energy requirements for air conditioning. The objective of this paper is to establish a systematic method to calculate the sunlit, and hence the shaded, fraction of slant-glass area. The presented analysis takes into account all of the numerous variables involved in the problem; namely, location, date, time of the day, wall orientation, rotation of glass relative to the wall, and geometrical characteristics of the window. The calculation procedure is casted in a general computer program which can be readily and unlimitedly used for any set of conditions. Some sample results are presented.

Reading a Max Lucado book is as comfortable as having coffee and conversation with a close friend. He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart is signature Lucado: warm, conversational storytelling blended with scripture, humor, and vulnerability.

Lucado invites us to understand the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion and celebrate the significance of the promises they offer. From the sign in different languages tacked to the cross ("I will speak to you in your language") to the burial clothing ("I can turn your tragedy into triumph"), he speaks of each symbol as a "gift of grace" that reveals God's love for mankind.

Lucado takes us to Calvary and shows us our sins nailed between the hand of Jesus and the cross. "You've made some bad choices in life, haven't you," writes Lucado. "You've chosen the wrong friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong spouse. You look back over your life and say, 'If only I could make up for those bad choices.' You can. One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth. The choice is yours."

Whether he's bantering around phrases like "the hall monitors of holiness" or crafting a deeper expository on the crown of thorns, Lucado neatly balances the task of making his words accessible to a broad audience while delivering a meaty message on God's greatest sacrifice. Pick up this insightful read, and you'll be glad you made the choice. --Cindy Crosby

                                  Book Description

The wood. The thorns. The nails. Christ's sacrifice has defined the very essence of mankind's faith for the past 2000 years. And now, Max Lucado invites you to examine the cross, contemplate its purpose, and celebrate its significance with He Chose the Nails. With his warm, caring style, Max examines the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion, revealing the claims of the cross and asserting that if they are true, then Christianity itself is true. The supporting evidence either makes the cross the single biggest hoax of all time, or the hope of all humanity. More than a book, the campaign includes the first stand-alone workbook, leaders guide, and video package from Max, as well as a praise & worship CD from Here to Him music featuring several of today's favorite Christian artists.

I have read many of Max Lucado books, and this one is one of his best. It brings us even closer to our Lord and Savior, and the sacrifice He went through for you and me.

Max draws you into the cross of Christ, as he attempts to capture your mind with reference to things you would not even consider. The Via Dolorosa is our journey too. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Good Lenten Reading!.......2007-04-02

We are doing a Lenten study using this book. The short chapters are easy to read and very thought provoking. I was especially glad it came in large print for a friend of mine who has trouble with her eyes. We have enjoyed it very much. The questions are better for those who have not really studied their faith in depth. I like the scripture study and references the best. Thanks Max!

We used this book as the basis for the Lenten series at our church. It was very powerful and amazing how God used it to change lives. Max Lucado has a God-given gift with words - he makes you laugh, think deeply, and desire more of God.
