Emma Graham is quizzical and persuasive, imaginative and pragmatic, shy and belligerent. And curious--oh, so curious. The cat hasn't been born that could challenge Emma in that department.
I can't let go of a thing--a puzzle, a person, a place. Once it gets my attention, I have to keep worrying it until it comes clear. I have to hang on, and it makes life really tiring. I work on these questions down in the Pink Elephant, a small chilly room which was once used for cocktail parties underneath the hotel dining room. The room's cold stone walls are painted pink, and there's a long wooden picnic bench and hurricane lamps. The candles give the room atmosphere. Cobwebs and dust and ghosts help too.
Wrestling with quandaries small and large--there's nothing like it to lift a 12-year-old girl from the humdrum vagaries of life in La Porte, a small resort town whose crown jewel, the Hotel Paradise, is drifting into threadbare but dignified obscurity. Emma, who has lived at the hotel all her life (her mother is the hotel's cook), is a charming mix of David Copperfield, Scout Finch, Harriet the Spy, and Rudyard Kipling's mongoose, whose motto is "Go and Find Out." In Hotel Paradise, Emma tried to unravel the mystery surrounding the 40-year-old drowning death of young Mary- Evelyn Devereau. In Cold Flat Junction, that death takes on new resonance with the murder of Fern Queen. Fern was the daughter of Ben Queen and his wife Rose Devereau, Mary-Evelyn's aunt. Ben spent 20 years in prison for Rose's murder, and Fern's body is found just days after Ben is paroled.
Convinced of Ben's innocence, Emma sets out to track down the real killer. Her investigations mirror a delicate web of small-town relationships, expectations, and preconceptions. She slips through diners, garages, abandoned houses, and train stations, befriending taxi drivers, schoolteachers, and poachers: "You have to sneak up on what you want to know; you have to peek through windows at the facts so they won't run off and hide. You cannot go smashing through doors." When Emma looks through windows, she sees not only facts, but dreams, questions, and possibilities. Her quest is for answers, certainly, but also for her place in the world she interrogates so persistently.
Hotel Paradise was compared by certain readers to To Kill a Mockingbird and was in turn found wanting by some. Although both novels have powerfully personable preadolescent girls as protagonists, the comparison is perhaps less than just. Harper Lee's novel is rooted in the dust and grit of a particular time and place, and at least part of its power comes from its evocation of participation in or responsibility for that particularity. The Emma novels, however, are narrative tapestries with threads tantalizingly resistant to such grime. Their strength lies in the author's ability to slip the bonds of context; she has fashioned a shimmeringly lovely world that resists our impulse to categorize, to locate, to fix. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
In a sequel to Hotel Paradise, its "utterly engaging" (Washington Post Book World) young heroine continues her quest for the truth-about two mysterious deaths and her own life.
Hotel Paradise and its twelve-year-old heroine, Emma Graham, were hailed by Booklist as "superb...beyond genre...one of the year's best!" Emma's quirky, mysterious, laugh-out-loud story, and her pursuit of old secrets in the cobwebbed corners of a once-fashionable resort hotel, added up to a novel that enchanted readers and drew comparisons with the work of both Barbara Vine and Henry James.
In Cold Flat Junction, the irrepressible and intuitive Emma is still obsessed with the "accidental"drowning of an adolescent girl, forty years ago. She seeks to unravel the mystery of the drowning and the unsolved murders that wind back to it. Extraordinary range and depth, singular characters, and intricate suspense make this yet another book that only the magnificent Martha Grimes could have written.

I love Emma even more in this second novel..........2003-12-31
First thing you need to do is throw out any ideas of this being like a Jury novel. Then get Hotel Paradise so you can read it and understand what is going on in this book.
Emma is simply a wonderful character and she jumps out of the book and comes to life. It's almost hard to imagine she is 12. The mystery still isn't quite over I wonder if Martha Grimes will tell us more in another installment.
Wonder.......2003-10-19
This is an wonderful book but the mystery is -confusing- and never ends. However, it's an wonderful story of trouble making, Emma, who make drinks to get infomation from the old lady, and she steals it from the snotty waitress' stash!
Hilorous!
answers?.......2003-09-27
I really enjoyed this book, but it helps if you read Hotel Paradise first. I am still waiting for answers and hope Martha has a sequel up her sleeve...there were just too many loose ends at the end! I just love the way Martha writes and its always such a pleasure to read her...but who was Rose and Mary-Evelyn's Mother?
very disappointing.......2003-05-30
Having grown the love the Richard Jury mysteries, I was bitterly disappointed by this novel. I tried to wade through it but it was so gawd-awful boring that I just gave up.
Absolutely five stars.......2002-10-25
What a wonderful book and audio-book! This is an extraordinary coming-of-age novel, with characters that you really care about and a haunting, ambiguous story. Bernadette Dunn is a wonderful narrator for this story as well. I bought a copy of the book after listening to it on tape first, and her voice echoes through my reading.
Emma Graham is a wonderful, rare, twelve year old narrator, perched right on the verge of adulthood. Her imaginative child self and her growing intuition about the interesting adults in her life sometimes work together here and sometimes battle each other in a fascinating mix.
This is also a beautifully lyrical novel that takes place in a world that seems quite timeless. We are in a recognizable world but not necessarily a specific time.
Definitely worth it! It's a gem!

Before Sigimor's Story.......2007-08-14
There is an order to this set. It's on the author's website.
This is Ilsa's (Sigimors sisters) story.
Handfasted to Diarmot a year ago, she had his twins. He was supposed to go home and clean up some trouble and get back to her.
Since Handfasting only lasts 1 year and the end of the year was approaching, Ilsa's brothers (all of them) take her and the baby twins to Dairmot demanding that he marry Ilsa.
They arrive at Diarmot's castle in time for a wedding...his.
This was a good story. The trust issue was beat to death, I think.
Highland Groom.......2006-08-03
I enjoyed this book alot. The surprise at finding out that he already has a wife and twins just as he's about to wed another. The hardtimes have just begun. At times you want to knock his block off and at others kiss him. A very good summer read.
Funny and Heartwarming .......2006-06-25
This is my second time reading this book. Sir Diarmot MacEnroy was ambushed and left for dead over a year ago. He was returned to his keep but doesn't have much memory of what happened to him. He has several illegitimate children and decides to marry. During the ceremony he is stunned when a very angry red-headed woman and kinsmen show up with two babies claiming he is their father and handfasted (engaged) to the woman. Ilsa Campbell MacEnroy and Diarmot met right before the ambush but Diarmot doesn't remember her at all. Her kinsmen are fiery and amusing. Diarmot fights his growing attraction to Ilsa and his memory slowly returns. The precious children love Ilsa and want her to be their mother but she is fighting Diarmot's mistrust as Diarmot's heart was broken by an evil ex several years ago. Eventually Ilsa decides to return to her kinsman because she loves Diarmot but can not live with his mistrust. After several weeks apart Diarmot realizes he loves Ilsa, finds her and tells her of his love. A funny, heartwarming story that makes you believe if you have enough love, maybe everything will turn out right.
Witty and entertaining - 3.5 stars.......2006-05-24
Plagued with recurring dreams about a scarlet elf and a troop of fiery demons, Diarmot MacEnroy wakes up on the day of his wedding thinking that all will be well. But before the priest even begins the ceremony, an angry redhead walks in with a half dozen murderous brothers in tow. To make matters worse, she claims to be his wife, and the twins she carries in her arms his children.
After waiting a year for Diarmot to come back to them, Ilsa Campbell has decided to confront the man who seemed to have deserted her and their twins. Never in her wildest imagination did she expect to find him at the altar ready to exchange vows with another woman. Stunned, Ilsa is initially uncertain whether she should believe his claim of not knowing who she is. But after bitter words were said, and a few punches exchanged, Ilsa knows that Diarmot is telling the truth. And there begins her battle to win his love once again...
After finding out what happened to Diarmot after he left their village, Ilsa realizes that it will take a lot of patience to get through Diarmot. She knows that honesty is the only way to gain his affection, but how can she gain it from a man who is so consumed with suspicions? As for Diarmot, when he was left for dead a year ago by an unexpected and unknown attack, he has been suspicious of almost everyone around him. He wants to let go of his doubts, but he is afraid that trusting another woman once again after his abysmal first marriage with an unfaithful wife will not only hurt his pride, but also cause him his life.
HIGHLAND GROOM is another entertaining addition to Hannah Howell's delightful Highland series. Featuring the wit and passion that I have come to like from the other books in the series, it features delightful characters that you cannot help but like. Ilsa is a courageous tiny bundle of joy and the perfect match for Diarmot, who happens to be the brother of the hero from HIGHLAND BRIDE. Though the plot is nothing new, I still enjoyed reading this book.
Excellent book!!!.......2004-04-13

The MacLean Groom is Magnificent.......2005-06-27
The first book in the Highland Lairds (not that I've ever found the remaining two) is a different read for the historical romance (Scottish) genre. This book takes you from the introduction, to the courtship, marriage, struggles, reunion, and family of the couple (Rory and Joanne). From reading their story, we find that love does not always instantly conquer all, as we witness Rory and Joanne overcome both internal and external obstacles to their happiness as a couple.
Although, it is bit difficult to read at first, (due in part to the beginning--which is a bit slow--in retrospect establishes a solid foundation for the ensuing story) the book really picks up after Rory (by order of the King) arrives at the MacDonald holding to marry the heir of his family's greatest enemy (the granddaughter of the man that killed his surrogate father). Dreading his marriage, Rory arrives to find his bride, Joanna, has "disappeared." But, Joanna, is just in arms reach disguised as a poor serving boy name Joey. The entire clan then endeavors to fool Rory into marrying the wrong woman or being stood up at the altar. However, Rory and the MacLean's are wiser than the MacDonald's expect. The result is a love story that becomes entangled in family loyalties & feuds, betrayal, treason, murderous plots, personal conflicts, and desire.
Ms. Harrington really engages the reader through an original take on the Highland Clan rivalries, her prose, character development, a well-written story with plenty of supporting characters and stories that in the end come together in a way that is pleasing to the reader. While it's difficult to watch as some of the developments and transformations take place (particulary with Joanna and the MacDonald clan), in the end, you are rewarded w/ more than a profession of love and the words "the end." We gain a peak into Rory and Joanna's life after they come together for good. The end is a very satisfying one that leaves the reader with closure and joy.
My very first historical romance.......2005-03-08
I would give this book ten stars if I could, just because it was the first historical romance novel that I was able to like. I had tried to read all sorts of Historical romance, but just couldn't seem to get past the first two pages. I picked this book up at a bookstore, along with ten contemporary romance, and after reading this I took everyone of the contemporaries back and traded them in for historicals. Four years later I still can't get enough historicals. I read at least six a week.
Aside from being my very first, this really is an entrancing read. I don't remember very much about it but I do remember that I stayed up all night reading this.
where are the other two books?????.......2004-05-11
Well, a great book!
But we write the Year 2004 of our Lord and I'm still waiting for the next books.

Worth reading............2002-09-21
It took me quite awhile to warm up to "The MacLean Groom" ....Infact, I felt that the beginning dragged horribly and I almost set it aside...I am however, very glad that I gave it a chance...Inevitably the story grew on me...the strongest point of the book would definitely be the character Rory..I adored him...He was so loving and patient.....I felt that he was way too good for Joanna...It bothered me that she was so inconsistent with him throughout the beginning of the story, but eventually she pulls it together and I ended up liking her regardless....I would like to see Lachlan and Raine paired up..I don't know if they will...but I'm hoping! Anyways..this book is worth reading..if you find yourself struggling through its start, give it a chance..I think youll be glad that you did.

Book Description
A perfect blend of humor and drama, Y: THE LAST MAN - ONE SMALL STEP is a fascinating tale of catastrophe and consequences. After a mysterious occurrence instantaneously killed every male human on Earth, twenty-something escape artist Yorick Brown suddenly found himself as the last man alive on a planet inhabited solely by females. But when Yorick and his secret service bodyguard learn of a Russian spaceship with two healthy males on board, they quickly journey to its projected landing site in Kansas to see if the rumor is true. Now as Yorick and Agent 355 wait to see if the cosmonauts will survive their return to Earth's atmosphere, a zealous faction of the Israeli military attempt to kidnap the last man for their own nefarious purposes.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A few people have realised that Yorick is not the only man left alive, even if he is the only man on Earth, as there are still people in space.
Yorick's sister has gone completely nuts, and her and her band of fellow mammary removing armed maniacs are still after Yorick. So is a hardcase Israeli military officer and her team.
Astronauts and Thespians.......2006-10-21
This is really two separate stories. In the first story we have the conclusion of the quest for the Russian space capsule. In the second story, and injured Ampersand is taken in by a group of traveling actors. There is no real transition between the two tales. Ampersand is healthy at the end of the astronaut arc. In a later tale we learn a little about the transition in a short comment from Yorrick.
The Russian space capsule is going to land in the American heartland. It happens to be near a research facility that should be able to keep the male astronauts isolated from whatever killed all of the males actually on the planet (Yorrick and Ampersand excepted). But of course nothing is simple in this new world and the Israeli army unit makes their play as they learn the truth about the space capsule.
Suddenly we meet a troupe of actors who find the injured Ampersand. They quickly discover he is male and decide to do a play about the last man on Earth. A mysterious sword-wielding figure keeps an eye on the action from the shadows. When the big performance finally arrives there is some chaos and Yorrick arrives to reclaim Ampersand. The story ends with a quick joke after we learn what some feel is necessary to save the world.
Two very different stories. The first is full of action and brings together a number of continuing characters and advances the plot significantly. The second story is more of a pause with almost no action and none of the continuing characters. It is hard to rate a book made up of two such different parts but I felt each story had something to offer even if the second story seems very unlike the rest of the series. Check it out.
BATTLE OF THE SEXES-how the world falls apart once it's entrusted to women.......2006-09-28
You all like misogynist comics?
Good stuff.......2006-07-14
Each TPB I read leaves me wanting more. I can't wait for the next one. Interesting story, good art, funny and my girlfriend likes reading them too!
Longer Book For The Same Price, But Series Slows.......2006-06-13
This book collects issues 11 to 17 of the series, offering seven issues for the same price as the first two five-issue volumes. Unfortunately, the plot moves slower than before, including a guest-penciled two-issue 'Comedy and Tragedy' sidebar about a traveling theater troupe in a small Nebraska town. I'll hope for an improvement in the simulaneously purchased Book 4 before continuing with Book 5.

Customer Reviews:
St. Benedict For Today.......2007-05-13
An excellent resource for anyone who wants to apply the Rule of St. Benedict, written in the 6th century, to today.
INSIGHTFUL TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION BY ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST PROLIFIC BENEDICTINE WRITERS.......2007-03-24
I am grateful this gentle text includes the traditional calendar of readings by which Benedictine houses around the world read our Rule through three times a year.
I am grateful Sister Joan presents so graciously her interpretation of each reading based upon her personal living and study of the rule for so long, an experience and wisdom which fills so much of her many courageous and brilliant Benedictine writings.
I am grateful for the great English translation of the immortal and ancient Rule which is included here, a translation which renders this simple rule comprehensible to us in our present situation of an alienated, individualized, selfish and secular nation where this holy and devoted and committed and avowed way of life seems so alien.
I am grateful each day to pray in this way with the strength and wisdom which ever flows from Sister Joan. For instance, this Sunday's reading of Chapter 45 included this commentary:
"Those who pray without knowing what they pray," Maimon Ben Joseph wrote, "do not pray." If anything, this chapter requires us to ask even to this day how it is that we can hear the Scripture but never study it, pray prayers but never contemplate the universal implications of them, go through rituals but never immerse ourselves in their meaning. How is it that we too pray without thinking, pray carelessly, pray poorly, or pray without thought? (p. 129)
Please join us in prayer in peace, that we may all together come home to the Kingdom, as Our Holy Father Saint Benedict writes in his Rule and desires for us all.
This Rule is welcome in any household. Read it at dinner with your own community this night, and each evening as the readings are ordered. We have so much to learn from this healing and holy Rule, of humility, holiness, submission, reading, work and prayer.
Rule of Benedict: Insights for the Ages.......2007-01-14
This an excellent book that has gem after gem of reflections about living a holy life. St. Benedict's words are quoted in original text (written more than a thousand years ago), and Joan Chittister's reflections give this text new insights and meaning relevant for today's world. We used it as a study book for a Christian Women's group. We started out highlighting words or phrases that "spoke" to us and ended up highlighting most of the Ms. Chittister's text!
The Best.......2005-10-12
By far one of the best and most honest writers we have today in the Catholic Church. If you are interested in becoming enlightened this is a writer to follow. Along with her books she also writes weekly for the Catholic Reporter.
A great book for...everyone.......2005-08-31
I was a sceptic of this book when a book store employee said he took issue with the authors translation. But after reading it and comparing with another translation of the rule, I found that Chittister is right on. She explains the rule as a relevent work and uses examples from other cultures to display the rule's universal appeal. I strongly recommend this book for everyone who wishes for direction and perspective in life.
