Book Description
In this exhilarating new novel of romance and intrigue, New York Times bestselling author Jane Feather tells the tale of an adventurous young woman and the hardened spy who is unexpectedly–and most inconveniently–captivated by her....
Independent and inquisitive, Meg Barratt wants nothing to do with any stifling society marriage. Meg yearns for the kind of passion that exists only in books–until a violent storm lands her on the high seas with the most dangerous and seductive man she’s ever encountered…or imagined.
For Cosimo, women are objects, to be manipulated for business or pleasure…sometimes both. But when the seafaring assassin accidentally kidnaps Meg on his latest mission, he must reconsider his position. Recruiting his unsuspecting captive for the danger ahead is far more challenging than he expected–and far more seductive.

Just Don't Do It.......2007-07-19
I can't believe the Jane Feather I know and love - mostly - wrote this waste of time. I felt like Meg's character had soooooo much more potential from Almost a Bride, and her story is a supreme disappointment to me. It was just boring! And for Ana to never physically be present in the story, she was a large presence. And what happened to Ana, anyway? Who betrayed the spies?
The ending seemed rushed, implausible and unfinished. How were their many issues resolved? Did he continue to be an assasin? How did Meg explain herself to her family and friends? Who in the world is Cosimo, really? We know he has family, but obviously they are somewhat refined. Is he a gentleman? And what happened to Ana? And why was David sailing with Cosimo? These are the kind of questions that I was left with. All in all, sorely disappointed. Glad I bought it second-hand, but still mad I paid any money for it!
Truly Enjoyable!.......2006-11-01
Almost a Lady is a spirited tale of adventure, intrigue, lust and love on the high seas. Jane Feather captures the escapades and caprices of a handsome, mysterious privateer, a lady of the English nobility, and Napolean. A quick, fun read!
Gave up after page 94.......2006-04-16
As in my other reviews, I have always found Jane Feather an auto buy and purchased this after being quite pleased with Almost a Bride. But as most the other reviews state, I have to agree this is a sleeper and a dud. I usually can't put her books down but this one I kept down and up for 3 days and still only got to page 94 before finally giving up and tossing it in my give away pile. I just have too many other books to read without spending days trying to find out why I just can't get into this one.
Intriguing.......2006-04-04
I don't understand why all of the comments written about this book are so negative. I was fascinated from the first and felt that Cosimo evolved into a sensative and loving hero. If you love the writing of Jane Feather, as I do, you will enjoy this story.
the worst jane feather book ever!.......2006-02-17
this was the worst jane feather book ever, and i have read most of her books. i've been slightly disappointed here and there but never like this! this book was terrible!. it was boring, it went on for days with nothing happening. by chapter 3 i was thinking "when is something going to happen?" by chapter 10 i was thinking "this is crap! and i want my money back!"
save yourself some money. i think i'm so disappointed because i bought and enjoyed "almost a bride". it was good! so i was looking forward to this one. what a waste of money!

Customer Reviews:
Wasn't much of a story.......2005-02-27
When it comes to romances I tend to be really critical. Overall, I did not like this book. But I did enjoy it enough to finish (and only saying "whatever" a few times). I thought that both of the characters were rather immature. Yes it's a romance. But the constant rambling about how much Brandt lusted for Willow was a little overloaded. We have a murder to solve...but romping in the sack is much more important. And the murder...oh yeah...that was obvious...maybe I would've liked this book better if it had a little mystery to it.
Pinkerton Women.......2004-06-28
This was a good book for a fast escape read. The mystery was well executed and the characters were realistic -- and the history of the Pinkerton Women a a good piece of historic "trivia" with which to base a novel. Personally, I think Willow gave in too soon and too often. With the mystery involved, the sex scenes actually detracted from the book. But I give it 4 stars for a fast escape read.
3.5 stars for this Pinkerton Woman.......2004-02-11
Very strong characters in this book. I really enjoyed the fact the woman was an agent for Pinkertons but I did think she "gave in" a bit too quickly for my standards. But overall a good fun read.
Lovely.......2001-05-12
Love Willow and Brandt. Neither is wimpy. I dislike heroines who can't stand up to the hero. Makes me wonder what the guys see in these spineless females. Also, the treatment of her brother is so sweet. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Betts.
Heidi Betts Shines.......2001-01-22
Willow Hastings is a Pinkerton agent out to find the murderer of a fellow employee. In order to get the case she makes a deal with her boss, and finds herself playing wife to the irritating Brandt Donovan. When Brandt's not aggravating her, he's driving her to distraction in a totally carnal way. These two headstrong people have a murder to find, but as they're searching they find something else. Could it be love?
Heidi Betts combines a heart-thumping historical romance with a heart-pounding mystery in this delightful story!

You won't be able to put this book down........1999-03-30
Barbara's characters are so real you'll feel like you're reading about your closest friends. The women in her books are strong, determined and passionate about life. The men are just as intense and genuine. And the situations they find themselves in are immediately captivating; everything in these character's live is at stake right from the start -- including falling in love with the one person who will make their lives even more difficult. Barbara is a great writer: you won't be able to put this book down.
Unique story line.....Excellently written...........1999-02-06
The pages of this book keep turning practically of their own accord. You will never want to put it down! The characters are extraordinary. Five stars: Just the right amount of heroism and excitement. If you like to feel every emotion this is the book for you. You'll love it! Plus the author has added a little "City of Angels" outlook on life and our roles on earth.

Customer Reviews:
One of my Favorite Lisa Kleypas books.......2007-08-29
This Novel lived up to all my expectations! It was very interesting to watch the hand of fate at work with the bringing together of Julia and Damon after they had been married for such a long time but never lived together as husband and wife, as Damon leaves the morning after their forced marriage. Both are strong-willed, with Julia fighting to maintain her independence.
Unexpectedly Julia finally meets her husband and finds herself being drawn to him. Yet as her parents have given her a dismal view as marriage and he is concerned about her career and her ability to fit in his world, she resists her attraction to him. On the other hand, Damon, as a nobleman, feels that Julia does not possess the qualities that a society wife should have. However, he becomes captivated by Julia on his first sight her and is unable to fight his attraction. Eventually the two realised that love means compromise and excepting each other for who you are.
I first read "Suddenly You" by Ms. Kleypas in the summer of 2001 and since then I have become an avid fan, purchasing several of her books and never being disappointed. If there was a down side to this book, it was that you wanted to see a happy ending for Logan, the star actor in the company, I wanted him to find love. Let us hope that Ms. Kleypas devotes some more attention to him in another book.
The book is fast-paced and one that you must read!
Enjoy this author.......2007-05-18
I really enjoy this author. Hew books are very creative and descriptive. She ranks up with other romance authors as one of my favorites.
Never disappointed in Lisa K........2007-04-12
This was one of the few books I have owned by LK that I had not read yet. I kept reading the 3 to 3 and 1/2 star reviews and thought if it wasn't as good as her others then I'll put off reading it and read some others I have. Well once again I thoroughly enjoyed yet another of this wonderful author's books. Maybe this book wasn't "quite" as polished as some of her later books but I enjoyed it, was enthralled with it, loved it every bit as much and just barely noticed a difference. By now everyone knows the story so I won't even go into that here.I felt the story was fleshed out very well, I cared about the characters very much as they were well developed, and the love scenes were touching and marvelous as ever. Devil in Winter is still my favorite book by Lisa Kleypas so far, but, this one was quite enjoyable and touching for me. I have yet to be disappointed in any book by this fine author and I certainly was not in this one. Yes it's another Kleypas Keeper for me! Bravo Lisa K. once again.
First romance book.......2006-08-15
I really enjoyed this book! It is my first romance book, it's romantic, dramatic, and just a good book in general. It's kinda like reading a soap opera! I can't wait to read other great romance books by Lisa Kleypas.
Kleypas's worst.......2006-07-25
I usually like Lisa Kleypas; I love her Wallflowers Quartet. This book is the worst of her offerings I've read so far, however. The characters left me cold, and I had to force myself to continue reading -- it went on way too long, and I just skipped the last few pages.
One thing that just bugged me were mistakes in the writing and proofing. The heroine, Julia, has a dual identity, Jessica, and at times, Kleypas had characters who only knew her as Jessica call her Julia. It's just sloppy.
By far the biggest problem happens towards the end of the book. I'm normally willing to buy a romance novel hero's insane jealousy, but the "hero" of this novel, Damon, goes so far as to abduct Julia painfully. At that point, I seriously expected her to turn from him and toward her friend and boss, whom Kleypas hinted from beginning to end felt more for Julia than he was letting on. After being abducted, and dealing with Damon's new and scary demeanor, Julia, unbelievably, melts towards him. She's supposed to be an independent woman, and all of her qualms about leaving her life, independence and acting behind just disappear...and why -- because he practically abuses her? She finds that endearing enough to completely submit to him?
Normally, I wouldn't get so worked up over a throwaway romance novel, but this one offended and disturbed me. Yech. I literally threw it away when I was done. Get back to humor-filled stories, Lisa Kleypas, please.

Book Description
On the Blue Shore of Silence celebrates the centenary of the birth of Pablo Neruda, one of the most widely read and best-loved poets of the twentieth century.
Although anthologies of Neruda's works abound, On the Blue Shore of Silence is the first to collect some of his poems on the sea. At times passionate and at other times peaceful, the poems chosen for this collection -- presented in bilingual format -- are meant to offer readers the experience of what it would have been like to sit with Neruda at Isla Negra, the view of the sea endless, the pulse of the waves, eternal.
With English translations by his favored translator, Alastair Reid, and stunning paintings from the artist Mary Heebner, On the Blue Shore of Silence is a new cornerstone in Neruda's body of work, expertly weaving together poet, artist, and reader.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Poetry, Beautiful Art!.......2007-09-19
I love Pablo's poetry. I didn't think it was possible for the art to be as beautiful as the poetry. But it is.
Pablo Neruda.......2007-01-22
The poetry in this book is exquisite. The presentation is excellant. I own a copy of it, myself, and bought three more to give as gifts.
An Amazing Compilation.......2004-09-06
Of all the Neruda anthologies that I have read, this is by far the most eloquent tribute to his love of the sea and his home on Isla Negra in Chile.
The English translations are done by Alastair Reid, Mr. Neruda's favored translator and it flows as naturally as does the Spanish original. I speak both languages and it is always such a pleasure to see a translation so elegantly done.
The artwork by Mary Heebner is as sumptuous as Pablo Neruda's poetry and truly reflects the feel of the ocean. Her paintings capture the mood of each poem perfectly and add to the emotion of his words.
It is I believe the only anthology that has focused solely on his poems of the sea.
The book is bilingual with the text in Spanish on one page and English on the other. It contains my favorite of Neruda's poems, The Soliloquy of the Waves.
Even the typeset and Neruda's name on the dust jacket painted in a blurry sea blue reflect the ocean that the poems are about.
Pablo Neruda has been a favorite poet of mine for many, many years and this stunning book is a wonderful addition to my collection of his anthologies. It is a beautiful piece to celebrate his centenary.
A beautiful compilation and excellent gift........2004-05-01
The choices are fine works by Neruda. While many collections of Neruda's work exist, most lack beauty in their presentation. This release is both a feast for the eye (thanks to the lovely yet appropriate art)as well as a treat for the soul (particularly if you are in love).

Customer Reviews:
Subtle and excellent.......2007-08-10
"Mais c'est la dernière! Nous ne nous batterons plus: nous nous marierons!"
But it's the last [war]. We will no longer fight each other; We will marry each other!
So says Werner von Ebrennac in this subtly moving novel. Werner is a Nazi soldier living with a Frenchman and his niece who voice their resistance to the occupation with silence. Werner loves France and all things French and harbors the belief that Germany has not come to harm France, but to "marry her." This was by far my favorite piece of literature I ever had to read in college. I have read it several times since, and each time I appreciate more and more the elegance and economy of the words, that beautiful sublety for which the French language is so famous. This book puts a human face on the Nazis and one ends up feeling very sorry for the francophile Werner. In comparing France and Germany (and perhaps himself and the niece) to Beauty and the Beast he says, "J'aimais surtout la Bête parce que je comprenais sa peine." I loved especially the Beast because I understood his pain." Every time I read it, I feel differently at the end. That's the beauty of this work, the silence that hides something, like the silence of the sea.
I recommend this version, especially if you are not confident in your French because the English translation is right there. Also, obscure words are translated at the bottom, words. Try it in French though because that language is so suited to a story such as this.
I love this book.......2005-12-09
I read this book in French in my French class; therefore, I cannot comment on the English version. The French version is poetic and inspiring. It deals with the interactions of individuals that all people can relate to. It is not a book of action--I would parallel Le Silence de la Mer to Tuesdays With Morrie--but it is full of ideas to reflect on. Not only is it a great book to reflect on philisophically, it is also a great book to put into the cultural perspective. It was one of the first books published after WWII, and, if I can remember correctly, it was first published as a midnight edition and circulated underground. If you are wanting to learn about the war from a French perspective as well as a German perspective, it is the right book to choose.
le silence de la rubbish book.......2004-02-23
i too am studying this school at french so basically what would i know. as well as not being very good at french im also not much of a book reader. in my opinion the only good part of the book is when it prevails that werner is sending himself to the frontline, he would rather die than destroy france and its people. thats quite touching. i wouldnt recommend reading this book for pleasure. thats strange i can smell gravy...
This book is neither good nor bad...........2000-08-14
I've read this books versions both in English and in French, and to suggest that it is a terrible book in either is to miss the point entirely. Yes, it is a bit dry at times (especially if your French is bad.... cause you'd miss a lot of the subtlety...) Yes, in English it seems rough and not that well done. Yes, perhaps if you have a limited amount of time to read books regarding this subject matter, etc. this should not be the first book you read....
But it is a good story with a different viewpoint. Does one accept a common humanity and collaborate with the German-- who after all does not seem that evil.... or does one forgo that for the pride of being French.... and being the conquored....
Honestly, everything having to do with WWII is biased.... or most everything.... this portrait is at least honest about it.... and fairly nonpoliticized... though that is another topic entirely....

A learning experience.......2007-08-01
This book is definitely a work out. The book really shows the impact the church has had on the world. The book does focus exclusively on the catholic church. The book is very well documented. He goes through several stories about various catholic clergy's impact in various sciences. The book does focus on the churches impact in the middle ages. The book does show a different perspective on the middle ages. I think any reader will learn something new. A reader will see the positive impact of the church. The book rambles at times with the various stories. A reader will get lost in the details. The book focuses to much on the science stories. The author does have good points about how the church's impact on culture in general. The author has a good conclusion in how he points out the impact on society on the decline of the church.
Catholic Contributions to Building Civilization.......2007-07-26
This book presents indeas on how the Catholic Church has helped in forming Western Civilization.
Excellent!.......2007-06-10
An amazing piece of research work! Professor Woods did a great job in compiling and transforming into a time line oriented text all the great myths taught on world schools about the Catholic Church, and demystifies them with pure true history. The historical facts break all those mainstream thoughts about the relations with the Knowledge, with the Science, with the Economy, Art, Morality, International Law, Medicine, Humanitary Help (!)... It's just a question of reading, and the historical facts can all be confirmed.
After this book you'll at least reflect on the position that the Church was the great evil and brake of the world in the Middle Ages, and probably abandon it. Just give it a chance to read the "other side" of the history, and not what the 20th century historiography wants you to believe.
Source of Catholic Pride in an Age of Persecution.......2007-06-03
In a time when the Catholic Church is enduring persecution on a scale to rival the Klan attacks of the 1920s, here is an objective, historical account of what good the church did throughout the ages.
Mention the Catholic Church from the Middle Ages and you'll hear tales of the inquisitions and resistence to enlightened thinking. This text highlights the achievements mankind takes for granted and has forgotten are the product of a Christian continent. The university system, the sciences, libraries... Woods' lists and examples are as surprising as they are awe-inspiring sources of Catholic pride.
Like any history book, the text is long, intricate and not celebrated as a 'page-turner'. That being said, its a great one to delve into on a long flight or retreat weekend.
Apolologist for this generation.......2007-05-15
It is, perhaps, a generalization to see a misrepresentation of Christianity in general and Roman Catholicism in particular in the popular notions of history today. But such misrepresentations are not new nor should they be unexpected in light of the warnings from Jesus in the gospels. With each generation apologists have attempted to counter the tendency of the world to misunderstand or misrepresent the faith. We like to believe that our high sense of right and wrong today with our distaste for racial bigotry and environmental sensitivities all came about on our own accord and that our righteousness surpasses the righteousness of our fathers. Yet we are but standing on the shoulders of the giants of past generations who laid the foundations for today's morality. The western world did choose to right the wrongs of the past despite the church, but it was the teachings of the church that instigated the desire to right those wrongs in the first place. Prof. Woods has given us just a few of many examples to challenge the notions of skeptics who see only a hinderance to progress in the church. It is a salve to the faithful and a solid scholarly response to the skeptic.

Product Description
Ask a college student today what he knows about the Catholic Church and his answer might come down to one word: corruption. But that one word should be civilization.
Western civilization has given us modern science, the wealth of free-market economics, the security of law, a sense of human rights and freedom, charity as a virtue, splendid art and music, philosophy grounded in reason, and innumerable other gifts we take for granted. But what is the ultimate source of these gifts? Best-selling author and professor Thomas E. Woods, Jr., provides the answer: the Catholic Church.
No institution has done more to shape Western civilization than the two-thousand-year-old Catholic Church and in ways that many of us have forgotten or never known. Woodss book is essential reading for recovering this lost truth.
