Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
I could call this book 3.75, perhaps, if that facility was available. It started a little slow, then he started piling on the 'wow' factor pieces and ideas, and then he'd throw in another one. The only criticism it that it might seem a little disjointed at times jumping back and forth, as though perhaps too much was edited out, or taken out, although by the end of it it was perhaps more obvious why this was done. Amusing to see that the 'human' POV character in this novel is a pig, too. I still do not want to ever have one of Alastair Reynolds nightmares. I woke up several times during the night after reading it, as it is.
Mr Reynolds, please give us more.
strange but purposefully and beautifully build.......2007-08-23
While others described the Revelation Space series as being "gothic," I never subscribed to that mindset and saw the universe created by Reynolds as being gritty, far from utopic. Absolution Gap, however, is a novel I few as "gothic" - cathedrals, creepy religion, a torture loving queen and a creepy guy who never blinks. Yea, that'll fit the word "gothic" as far as a sci-fi novel goes.
I understand why many don't like this part of the series - it's not spacey enough, techy enough or even sci-fi enough. The main action happens on a remote moon of a remote planet, where technology isn't impressive, impossing or infinite.
The entire plot seemed disconnected at first, but into the reading (and nearly towards the end) we begin to understand why we've led so far into the book of strange moons and planets... there is an end to his means. This ending, which some scratch their head at, only ferments in my head everyday trying to brew up a logical follow-up in the Revelation Space series. Seperatly (if you wanted to seperate the books), this book would score lowly but I can see it as a great connection... a quantum leap into a stunning follow-up. Pray there be one soon.
Superb Until Last 6 Pages.......2007-07-11
All the reviews are spot on: the book, the series, the stories, the characters - absolutely wonderful; completely on par with some of the best of Asimov, Heinlen and Meiville.
And then, the last 6 pages where everything is either forgotten about (i.e., the conjoiners, our characters, etc.) or magically "poof!" resolved.
In reality, while the epilogue is a good clarification of the series end, there seems to be at least 14 chapters, if not another book, missing in between the end of this book and the series epilogue.
And that's the main, and really only, disappointment of this book and the entire series.
Absolution? That's what I need after sitting through this book!!.......2007-03-25
Listen, I love a good hard Sci-Fi book. I grew up on Arthur C. Clarke and the likes. These can be good stories, putting the whole myth of the "Star Wars" universe to rest and showing what space travel and living in space may really be like one day. Alistair Reynolds, though, just isn't cutting it. I sincerely believe that he, too, grew up on Clarke and is trying his best to emulate the master in these stories. Absolution Gap is the last book in this series set in a human universe beseiged by an overwhelming technology bent on exterminating starfaring life. Great idea, right? Well, it is, but the actual plot never really comes to life in this one.
Reynolds makes a mistake of dividing his story into two parts. One is rather interesting. The other is rather not. While these two parts come together towards the end in a predictable way (the plot twist connecting them is rather obvious and I don't think Reynolds meant it as a surprise), the weaker of the two stories only tends to drag the more interesting one down. Then, there's a battle aboard a starship that made absolutely no sense, an ending that destroys the whole premise of a good hard sci-fi book and the reader is left feeling rather let down.
This one only gets three stars due to the parts of the book that were interesting and I warn anyone reading it that you really have to struggle through half this book. Like "Redemption Ark", the book starts slow and moves nowhere fast. It picks up at the end, again like "Redemption Ark", but by then you just want it to be over. I hope Reynolds learns to pace his future novels a bit better, but he really has the imagination and the scientific background to do justice to his more famous British predecessor.
Excelent.......2007-02-07
I'm always pleased with Alastair Reynolds. This last book in the opera was just as good as the others. Definitely worth the read.

Best of the series thus far.......2005-01-20
I was drawn to this volume after becoming a new member of the legion of MaryJanice Davidson fans. I am happy to report I was not disappointed. This volume pays for itself each time I read it, and believe me, I read it often! As is her form, MaryJanice Davidson has written an erotic tale consistent with the quality I have come to expect of her. The other stories in this volume vary greatly in subject and writing style, but all of them are EXCELLENT. Folks, this is erotic fiction at its finest--do add this one to your library! You won't be disappointed!
Taming Kate is the best story!.......2004-08-03
I've never been a big cowboy fan but I want to read what happens to all the boys in Love, Nevada! This story was hot, hot, hot and fun, fun, fun!!!!!
Get this -- if only for Mary Janice Davidson's novella!.......2004-06-20
I have read and loved several of these Secrets anthologies. Again, I skipped a few volumes because Mary Janice Davidson, one of my favorite new erotic romance authors, is featured in this one. She also wrote a novella on Volume 6, but I was unable to get a copy of that book. I loved her novella! It is full of Davidson's signature wit and crisp dialogue. Jared's Wolf is the follow-up to Love's Prisoner -- the novella featured on Volume 6. Jared Rocke wants to find and destroy the werewolf who murdered his sister. He hates werewolves and is determined to find Michael Wyndham, the leader of the pack. However, he stumbles upon Moira, a beautiful accountant who works for Wyndham -- or so he thinks. Moira decides to spend time with him and get information about his intentions. Intense attraction and mind-blowing sex ensue between the two. But how will Jared feel when he finds out that Moira is a she-wolf? He'll be shocked; after all, he thinks only men are werewolves...
Again, Mary Janice Davidson entertains the reader with the bantering between the characters. Her stories make me laugh all the time. This is the best novella in this anthology. I also like Alice Gaines's historical tour de force My Champion, My Love. I love the old New York setting and the wonderful erotic scenes. And Jeanie Cesarini's Western erotica Taming Kate is a wild ride! It has the no-holds-barred D/s elements that I love in erotic romance. I didn't like Liz Maverick's futuristic story Kiss or Kill. The story of a female soldier who falls for a robot that resembles a human being left me cold. All in all, Secrets Volume 8 is smoldering erotica at its best (save for Liz Maverick's story). I recommend it, if only for Ms. Davidson's novella.
Passionate Stories.......2003-05-16
Red Sage Publishings Secrets lives up its advertisement of being "The Best in Women's Sensual Fiction". These stories are hot and well written. They will have you wishing that these determined Alpha males were in your life.
MaryJane Davidson returns with her werewolf series in Jared's Wolf. Jared's sister was killed by a werewolf and he is determined to kill the man that did it. He knows that only men can be werewolves (so much for reliable information) so when he sees a beautiful young woman roaming the werewolf compound he kidnaps her to keep her safe. Moira is more than capable of taking care of herself, but she is strongly attracted to Jared. She is convinced that he is an arrogrant and overbearing male that has a lot of wrong and potentially harmful information. She is determined to protect her pack and he is determine to avenge his sister.
Taming Kate is about a young women who inherits a botheral in Nevada. The botheral has been in her family for generations. The problem is that she didn't realize that she had a family. Having been raised to be prim and proper the passionate Kate can't bring herself to be a Madame of a brothel, especially when she is following the career her mother wanted for her. Trey Holliday is going to change Kate's mind and prove to her that passionate is not a bad thing.
My Champion, My Love is set in the Vistorian era when proper women were not suppose think that sex was wonderful. Celeste is committed to an asylum for her seual appetites by her stepchildren. Celeste's friend convinces the mayor, Robert Albright, to help Celeste. After an afternoon of passion they are torn apart by betrayal. Robert most not only face the betrayal but come to terms with his love for Celeste. Can he believe that she loves him.
This is a great collection of stories and worth adding to your collection of keepers.
What a hoot!.......2003-05-08
If you want to laugh out loud while you read a hot romance, get this book and go directly to JARED's WOLF by MaryJanice Davidson. It is worth it for that story alone! The exceptional dialogue and banter between the characters will make you chuckle. I hope to see more from Ms. Davidson...and SOON!

From the opening line of his breakthrough cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson plunges the reader into a not-too-distant future. It is a world where the Mafia controls pizza delivery, the United States exists as a patchwork of corporate-franchise city-states, and the Internet--incarnate as the Metaverse--looks something like last year's hype would lead you to believe it should. Enter Hiro Protagonist--hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver. When his best friend fries his brain on a new designer drug called Snow Crash and his beautiful, brainy ex-girlfriend asks for his help, what's a guy with a name like that to do? He rushes to the rescue. A breakneck-paced 21st-century novel, Snow Crash interweaves everything from Sumerian myth to visions of a postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse. Faster than the speed of television and a whole lot more fun, Snow Crash is the portrayal of a future that is bizarre enough to be plausible.

A Great Intro to Neal Stephenson.......2007-10-06
Snow Crash was the first NS book I read - but certainly not the last. He's simply the most intriguing, creative writer I've come across and one of my first recommendations for anyone who wants to read intelligent commentary on the human condition through fiction. My only critique of Neal's work is that he doesn't always seem to know how to end a book. But maybe that's because he's such a fine writer, I just don't want it to end. Start with Snow Crash, read The Diamond Age, then if you're hooked, take a shot at reading Cryptonomicon and the Baroque Cycle.
No-Holds-Barred Cyberpunk.......2007-09-16
Years ago, this book was all the rage with a group of my friends, and after hearing them talk so much about it, I had to check it out for myself. I wasn't disappointed; Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash is a superb cyberpunk novel with fun characters thrown in.
Hiro Protagonist (no, really...that's his name) is a sometime pizza boy in an America that has become fractured and conglomerated by corporations. However, his real a/vocation is his life on the net, wherein he is a sword-swing agent. When his net mogul friend, Da5id, is rendered brainless by a strange computer virus called Snow Crash, Hiro is thrown into an adventure with Mesopotamian mythology, mad mafia pizza moguls, a criminal whose weapon of choice is plate-glass spears, a massive floating island of refugees, and a cynical teenage skateboard courier. Stephenson has an eye for both satire and for enthralling description. Highly recommended for any fan of William Gibson.
Cyberpunk is my new love..........2007-09-16
This book had my heart after the first paragraph. I love the way Stephenson is so descriptive, using so many metaphors that your head spins. It was seriously like watching "The Matrix" for the first time. You remember how with just about every action scene you were able to mutter at least one "That was freakin' awesome!"? Well that's how "Snow Crash" is going to be for you. There's not one chapter that goes by where you aren't interested.
Even the less action-packed chapters are just as captivating, not only because Neal Stephenson can write a sentence so full of satire and humor that only weeks later while standing in line at the DMV will you break out in laughter at finally understanding it completely, but because the content is just so intriguing. I also must confess to loving the parts of the book that dealt with Sumerian mythology, as well as the Raft.
Anyway, without giving any more details, I definitely stand by this book as one of the best novels ever written. Even Time Magazine seems to agree, having put it on a list of "All-Time 100 Novels"(http://www.time.com/time/2005/100books/the_complete_list.html). So especially if you've been out of touch with a good book for a while, consider reading "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. It'll make you fall in love with literature all over again, even if you don't know for sure what Cyberpunk means.
Stunning.......2007-09-13
The combination of technology and cutting edge concepts make this a watershed novel. A pleasure to read was actually sad when I realized only twenty pages were left. Think of that...

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A fabulous book, right from the very first life or death pizza delivery incident, and the adventure that flows from there.
Our recursive main character, Hiro Protagonist, must help out a girl, solve a conspiracy, and find out where he comes from, all with a little help and a lot of danger. An intelligent, clever and very funny romp from start to finish, although the humour is more prevalent in the beginning, before the Sumerian encounter.

The Tower of Babel.......2006-08-11
Only Neal Stephenson can bring out a relationship between Ancient Sumerian and binary, and that connection causes knowing either one well to make a person susceptible to control by others. Only he could get away with giving the main character a name like Hero Protagonist. This Book is full of absurdities, yet Neal Stephenson manages to pull them off with grace and beauty. In a future vaguely similar William Gibson's, Hero try's to find out why an old colleague has gone catatonic and who caused it, and also hopes to renew a romantic relationship in the process, not to mention make a few bucks on the way.

Book Description
John Hagee says, "The world as we know it will end, neither with a bang nor a whimper, but in stages clearly set forth in God's Word." His latest and most provocative book takes a cue from a cultural icon, the ticking clock. Hagee presents a prophetic "Doomsday Clock" and counts down the minutes-through prophetic events-which must occur before that fateful moment when every unredeemed individual must face God on Judgment Day. Citing examples from national and international media and using Scripture to confirm his insights, he presents a compelling argument to prove that time is indeed running out.
Customer Reviews:
Daniel's understanding.......2006-12-01
Hagee reveals through this book the special visions that Daniel had in regards to end time prophecy. It's a compelling book that covers the thousand year prophecies and the antichrist. This book is similar to Apocalyptic Secrets of the Hebrew Sanctuary, a book that also covers Daniel.
Where does the word Rapture appear in the bible? Oh yeah it doesn't!.......2006-11-15
If you could do one thing better than GOD, would you still believe?...............
I would like you to imagine for a moment, a mother's love. I think we can all agree, the bond between a mother and child is one of the strongest bonds known to mankind, in any time or culture. Now imagine you are the mother of two children. One boy and one girl, their ages are unimportant.
Got the image in your head? Great, now imagine one child is always a troublemaker, quite a little heathen if you will. The child never listens to anything you say, gets in trouble at school, and even sometimes says they hate you. Child number two, is a perfect little angel, always does what they are told, hugs you and kisses you often and whispers their love for you every night before they fall asleep.
Of course you may discipline the naughty child, but do you still have unconditional love for both children mommies and daddies of the world?
Of course you say?
Well let's see..........
Late one summer night you decide to go to the corner store to buy some milk after the children have fallen asleep, upon returning only ten minutes later you are horrified to see that your house is engulfed in flames. Knowing both children are inside, and could be burning alive at this very moment, you know you need to make a quick judgement.
Which child will you save??????
What ??
Both you say?
Why would you save both children?????
What?? Because you love both of them??? Why?
One child is a complete terror, and doesn't even love you!!! Why would you do such a thing???
The Christian God wouldn't!!
What you say??? God has unconditional love, even more than a mere human mother?
Really????
Well, let's take a look at the GOD of love for just a moment...
God has many children in this world yet he punishes those who do not love or "believe" in him, with fire for ALL ETERNITY does that sound like unconditional love to you???
If I, as a mere human mother, can love my children with the unconditional love that GOD cannot, does he truly love and forgive better than us "silly" humans that he supposedly created?
Or are we all just ignorant children, hoping that our "father's" approval (with strict unrealistic conditions), equals love?
You decide... Can you do something better than God?
What you say, if he didn't love us he wouldn't have sent Jesus to "save" us and forgive our sins?
We'll believing in Jesus is still a condition isn't it?
Something to think about.
Ps.
The sins of god include: murder (of the whole world except the ark), impregnating a virgin, rewarding lot after he tried to give away his virgin daughters to the town, acceptance of polygamous marriages in the old testament, etc. etc. etc. If a human were on trial for the same things we would put them away forever. Yet we excuse God by saying he knows what's best for us and he can do whatever he wants because he is GOD. Our American laws are based on the ten commandments yet we follow the laws of GOD who cannot keep his own commandments. If God was truly a perfect being he would have known in his "all time seeing vision" that we would mess up, and he wouldn't have tested eve with the apple. If God never made mistakes why did he wipe out the entire planet with a flood after the first batch of people did work out? If God didn't make mistakes why bother with the ten commandments if he knew nobody could follow them and he would have to send Jesus to get crucified on a cross to make up for it? I thought God knew everything. Frankly I've seen better administrative work during the Clinton administration, and that's saying something.
When will the (educated) wealthy countries learn to spread hope through actual tangible help to third world nations instead of "helping" them with false promises of heaven while we steal their oil, diamonds, and hope?
We have battered those weaker than us with our "religion" for far too long
Somebody stop the planet, this "saved" Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist turned Evangelical Atheist wants to get off.
Angela (San Antonio, Texas)
These are all the same.......2006-02-15
Whether it's the 'Left Behind' series, (such a charming title), or 'Countdown to Doomsday' or any of the other blood and thunder books, you can count on one thing: God is mad as hell at all of us, (except the 'chosen') and is going to unleash a fury against his archenemy Satan. The great cosmic battle will be played out at Armeggedon where Satan and God will will duke it out in front of the whole world. Well, most of the world. The elect will be taken by rapture into Heaven safely ensconced away from the raging, bloody battle.
Eventually, most of the world will be tossed into a flaming, eternal pit of torture for an eternity, while the saved get to look down on the agony of the unsaved and stick their tongues out: nyah-nyah! I just wonder if when Hagee sees Christ he will yell JJJJEEEEEEZSZZZZUUUUUUUSSS like he does on television.
And all this mind you, in the name of the Prince of Peace.
BOOK FAILS TO ADDRESS JESUS' PROPHECY OF "THE LAST DAY.".......2006-01-09
This book fails to address the words of Jesus Christ concerning "the last day" in John 6:39-40; John 12:48 and John 5:28-29 which are the basis for the historical view on this subject.
We interpret the unclear verses of the Bible by the clear ones.
Jesus says: "Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:40).
"At the last day" - not 7 or 1007 years before the last day as this author believes.
Jesus says: "There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words. That very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day." (John 12:48)
This author needs to accept the very words of Jesus Christ when He says "at the last day."
Jesus says: "The hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear my voice and come out. Those who have done good will rise to live and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned." (John 5:28-29)
This author changes the words of Jesus and tries to insert 1000 or 1007 years between Jesus' call and ignores the word "all". (See also John 11:24)
See 2 Peter 3:10-13 for a description of the last day. The rest of the Bible agrees with Jesus Christ not this author.

I Admire Hagee's Courage!!.......2003-09-02
I didn't read this book until recently but I do admire John Hagee for writing it. It shows a fearless respect for informing the people of God about what has already gone on and letting us know what to expect in times like these and also the very importance of reading our Bibles and not only reading them but, allowing the Word of God to penetrate into our minds, hearts and souls. For therein lies all the answers to what's going on all around us today.
