Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another good title in this series.......2006-06-19

I must applaud Ayelet Waldman for writing her mommy track series. Having recently moved, I found myself in a terrible case of reader's block. Nothing I picked up from bestsellers to old favorite authors seemed to interest me. But then I read an article abotu Wladman and her husband Michael Chabon, an author, and decided to try the first book in this series Nursery Crimes. And within the first five pages of that title, it was as if the character of Juliet Applabaum, her family and the murder of a nusery school headmisterss, reeled me in. Not with the completion of the third book in this series, A Playdate with Death, I can't wait to gobble down the rest of the titles in this series hoping it never ends.

Rachel is now the mother of a 2 year old son who is obsessed with guns and an almost 5 year olddaughter who would rather play games with mommy than play with her brother. Naturally the two of them are just about driving Juliet, a Harvard educated lawyer turned full time mother, up the walls.

As a diversion to being at home and losing some of those unwanted pregnancy pounds, Juliet has hired a personal trainer. Little does she know that doing sit ups and scissor kicks will lead her to investigating another murder and the world of genetic diseases. She never expected to show up for her session one day and find out that the young man who is supposed to whip her into shape committed suicide. With no obvious clues that this man was on the brink of emotional disaster and as Juliet thinks about this young man, she knows she won't rest easy till she determines this was a suicide and not a homicide. Now Juliet is off to discover what really happened.

From this point on the plot becomes a roller coaster ride focusing on the parents and family of this young man who was adopted, but never knew it. When Juliet learns that the young man recently found out he carrried Tay Sachs, a genetic disorder prevalent among Eastern European Jews, it is apparent that more than one person found out about this and felt threatened. But who this was and why they felt it necessary to mruder him and make it look like a suicide is what confounds Juliet and readers alike. The book had me hloding my breath till the end which foudn all of the pieces fitting and I closed the book with a satisfied sigh.

3 out of 5 stars Another twisty mommy-track mystery.......2005-04-01

This third outing in the Juliet Applebaum mysteries finds the sleauth seeking the truth about the apparent suicide of her fitness trainer.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2004-10-16

As if the annoying Ruby wasn't bad enough in previous installments of this series, now we have Isaac who, at 2 1/2, is still nursing and seems to have the vocabulary of a college professor. And while less Ruby is a good thing, too much Isaac is a bad thing.

Another silly pretense of Juliet sticking her nose into something that doesn't concern her, and people telling her everything she wants to know for absolutely no reason at all. Nothing makes a novel less enjoyable than having no clue at all why the main character is involved or why people are opening up to her.

I'll give this series one more shot, but if the annoying brats continue to overshadow the actual story, I'm done with it.

3 out of 5 stars Questionable Paternity, Tay-Sachs, and Death.......2004-04-27

I picked up A Playdate with Death because I was intrigued by its title and cover artwork. It is a well-written, fast-moving book. Author Ayelet Waldman seems to put a lot of her personal experiences into her books. Just like the book's heroine Juliet Applebaum, Waldman is a former public defender turned stay-at-home-mom. Applebaum often wavers from loving her two young children and movie-making husband and homelife to borderline resenting her family from keeping her from pursuing her career aspirations. In a very un-Dr. Laura way, Applebaum reflects: "Since I'd quit work, I'd found myself increasingly bored and frustrated with staying home. I'd left my job because I thought raising my kids myself was more important than working, but sometimes it was difficult to imagine my sighing, listless presence around the house was really doing Ruby and Isaac any good" (pg. 73). At this point, she must juggle her strong-minded daughter's schedule and drag around her 2 ½ year old son who still demands to be nursed (at one disturbing point, the child announces "bring me my breasts"!) as she investigates the sudden and suspicious death of her physical trainer. His death is deemed a suicide, but Applebaum is not so sure.

Waldman obviously conducted a lot of research in writing this book, especially on the Tay-Sachs disease which plays a large role in the story. Some parts of the book seemed a little unrealistic, especially the ease with which Applebaum was able to get numerous strangers to open up about extremely sensitive issues. Applebaum seems to do no wrong in this book, getting answers she needs from people in only a few visits, having a cop turned private investigator beg her to work with him because of her legal skills, even succeeding in firing some rounds at a rifle range for the first time. Her distaste for firearms is also substantiated. The book is fast-moving enough to hold one's attention, but, to me, the circumstances surrounding the death were more intriguing than the whodunnit. One fun sidenote: when searching her trainer's laptop, Applebaum runs across a review the suicide/murder victim wrote on Amazon for a John Grisham book which "he liked...okay but he wasn't thrilled" (pg. 52). He probably gave it 3-stars like I am giving A Playdate with Death.

As a stay at home Mom of 2 I loved this book. It was perfect for the short spans I can find in my day to read. The story was involving and fun. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. Written for Moms as only a real Mom could. Thanks Ayelet!!

    Book Description

If you're a single parent and your daughters decide you should get married again, give up now! Especially if they appoint themselves your matchmakers . . .

    Yours and Mine

Joanna Parsons is a single mother who insists that marriage is an experience she doesn't plan to repeat. But her eleven-year-old daughter, Kristen, has a different scenario in mind -- and it involves Tanner Lund, her best friend's dad. Both Tanner and Joanna are determined to resist marriage, but they've reckoned without their daughters . . .

    Lone Star Lovin'

He's a hardworking, good-looking rancher, but single father Cody Bailman has neither the time nor the patience for "courtin' a woman." His twelve-year-old daughter, Heather, is determined to teach him about romance. She's got her eye on nurse Sherry Waterman, who's "just perfect for Dad"!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Two light-hearted, easy-reading stories!.......2005-07-04

Yours and Mine is a heartwarming story of two single parents coming together and finding both romantic love, and family-love, through their daughters who are best friends. I loved how the friendship between the children, and the relationship between the adults and children, were as important to this story as the blossoming romance between Joanna and Tanner. What made this story standout is that conflict was realistically handled with humor, wit and good-natured teasing, rather than the unnatural and annoying hostile bickering that seems to dominate other romance novels.

Lone Star Lovin' was also a very natural flowing and believable story, emphasizing platonic friendships and adult-child relationship as much as the romance. I did find the small-town gossiping of the supporting characters to be rather stifling, and made me feel embarrassed for Cody and Sherry who weren't given a reasonable amount space and privacy. All-in-all, a very nice sweet story.

4 out of 5 stars Darling Daughters review.......2003-01-20

I really enjoyed this book. It was hard to put down. I read all 378 pages in 5 days. The first story is about Joanna Parsons, a single mother who does not want to remarry. But her 11 yr old daughter Kirsten, is determined to have her mom marry Tanner Lund, her best friend's dad. The second story is about Cody Bailman, a hard-working, single rancher with a 12 yr old daughter named Heather. She is bound and determined that she is gonna teach dad about romance. She is really hoping he will get together with nurse Sherry Waterman. Both stories are just heartwarming

    5 out of 5 stars Very Sad Story-But Good.......2003-07-24

Dearest Vicky Darling Fritz was a very interesting book and also very informative. When reading it I felt very sad for Vicky and Fritz for all the things they had to go threw, such as children who made trouble for them, a minister who did not like them, Fritz's father who would not give them the respect they diserved, and to top it off Fritz's death of cancer four months after becoming Kaiser Fredrick III.

3 out of 5 stars There are better books out there........2002-06-01

This was fairly interesting and well written, but for a good, thorough biography of Princess Vicky, "An Uncommon Woman" is a far better choice. On the other hand, if you are looking for a fairly brief overview of her life and loves, this book will spare you the extreme detail found in "Uncommon Woman."

    4 out of 5 stars Poor Vicky.......2002-01-25

It was a rarity indeed that a royal marriage would be a happy one; that was never the idea of alliances such as the one between Victoria, Princess Royal, and Crown Prince Frederich of Prussia--but a happy marriage is exactly what they had. A partnership between a good man and an exceptionally intelligent, perceptive, loving woman. Vicky was maligned in her adopted country, gossiped about, belittled, and ultimately emotionally abused by her two eldest children, but she remained a remarkable woman nonetheless. This is a fascinating book about a devoted couple.

4 out of 5 stars Intimate look into the private lives of royal women.......2002-01-06

After Queen Victoria's death, her youngest daughter Beatrice (at Victoria's own request) edited all her journals and destroyed the originals. However, the letters between Victoria and her eldest daughter, Empress Frederick of Germany, were kept elsewhere and remained intact.

This series provides an invaluable, candid look at Victoria's intimate feelings and private opinions. Forget the dour old monarch intoning "We are not amused"; here you encounter a mother sharing her thoughts, hopes, fears and opinions with her daughter.

This book is a follow-up to the multi-volume series by Roger Fulford (Your Dear Letter, Dearest Mama, Dearest Child, etc). Fulford's work as an editor was superior in my opinion. If you are seriously interested in finding out what Queen Victoria and Vicky (Empress Frederick) were like as people, I'd recommend looking for the Roger Fulford series in a good library or through used booksellers.

This book is still very enjoyable, and definitely worth reading for Victoriana buffs. But some may have difficulty keeping track of historical events and figures.

4 out of 5 stars Dear Mom, I mean Your Majesty:.......2000-07-09

This is an excellent book, but not for the beginner. If you know very little about German or English history, this book might be confusing at times. For those with some background it is an absolutely delightful glimpse into the lives of two outstanding characters. A "must have" for fans of Queen Victoria or the Kaiserin Friedrich!

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into Victoria and Vicky's minds.......2000-05-01

I loved reading these letters! Behind the cold royal facade are two very likeable women who truly understand each other. It is fun to see these two (a Queen and Crown Princess) relate to each other in the same way most mothers and daughters do. "Keep your back straight, brush your teeth, don't eat too much or laugh too loud"

their desolation over the deaths of Albert, Victoria's beloved husband and Vicky's dad and of Alice, Vicky's sister, is so real and palpable.

there are other books in this series, I've read them as well and they're delightful.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting subject, mediocre editing.......2000-03-15

This last collection of the letters between Queen Victoria and her oldest daughter, the Empress Frederick, cannot help but be fascinating. Unfortunately, the editing and annotation cannot in any way compare to Roger Fulford's work on the previous volumes. The annotations are either in brackets (interrupting the flow of the page-- the Queen and her daughter were fond of nicknames and abbreviations, so a great deal of annotation is needed) or at the end of the book (necessitating flipping to the back of the book and figuring out the footnote number to read the clarifying information). While this book is not as easily readable as the previous volumes, the information it contains is just as interesting.

Gert Hardcastle and her twin, Frank, can read each other's minds. She knows when he is plotting fiery ordeals for her dolls, and he knows when she is being attacked by river swans. When Frank returns from his sadistic boys school and moves into the ghost-infested attic bedroom that Gert has just fled, she is the sole family member to see the aura of madness collecting around him. But there are limits to their empathy. In adulthood, only she receives begging letters from their indigent mother, and only she is wracked by hopeless love for Eva, the coffee girl at the museum where she works as a curator. Frank remains strangely removed from human concerns, despite his telepathic link to his sister.

Well received by English critics, Crocodile Soup will call to mind Jeanette Winterson's early work, especially Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, yet this fragmented but appealing comic novel is entirely fresh. Julia Darling has the gift of writing from a child's perspective: an ability to see at close range, and without context, making plain the strangeness and wonder of the world. The best chapter in the book is a brief description of the twins' first day of nursery school. Surveying the chubby boys racing wild-eyed around the room, Gert promptly wets her pants, while Frank begins to count maniacally. For the rest of the morning, she is ostracized, and sits in humiliation near the fuzzy felt while her brother, "still counting, drew a picture of an abattoir, upsetting some of the other children."

He had reached two thousand and eighty-three when Miss Lute rang a heavy brass bell, and we were instructed to eat rusks, which tasted of recently ironed tablecloths. We were told to chew them thoroughly. Then we had weak juice, that must have been drugged, because afterwards we all lay down on straw mats and fell asleep, while Miss Lute sang "The Farmer Wants a Wife" in a low monotone.
None of Darling's other characters come to life in the way that Gert and Frank do, not even Gert as an adult, with her inexplicable passion for Eva. Narrative, too, isn't the driving force behind Crocodile Soup, which ambles along with an internal logic that may frustrate a plot-loving reader. Nevertheless, the childhood scenes and Darling's comic talents make this a more-than-worthy debut from a quirky new voice in British fiction. --Regina Marler

      Book Description

      Dear Gert,
If you won't write to me, then could you send me some money?
I believe you have a good job. A few hundred pounds would be helpful.
Don't send cash, as the post often gets stolen. Send a cheque.
      I am your mother.
      Jean

Gert Hardcastle is thirty-something and unlucky in love. She is also estranged from her mother, Jean. As Crocodile Soup opens, she thinks she has found "the One"--the enigmatic Eva, who serves coffee in the cafeteria in the museum where Gert works as a curator cataloging Egyptian artifacts. As Gert embarks on her hilarious and poignant pursuit of Eva, she looks back on her eccentric childhood and her relationship with Jean through a series of vivid and surreal flashbacks.

As she revisits her past, Gert brings to life the bizarre and endearing members of her family: her obsessive twin, Frank, with whom she communicates telepathically; her father, George, who vanishes to Africa to salvage the family crocodile farm; her vain, neglectful mother, Jean; and the family ghost--a Victorian poet who haunts the attic. Gert's story is punctuated by terse, intriguing letters from jean to which she does not respond, and ambiguous encounters with Eva.

In her struggle to come to terms with her mother, Gert opens up to Eva, and begins to understand more about her past. Is Gert destined to remain the scaffolding for those around her or will she find her savior? In a lyrical narrative studded with relentless humor and giddy self-deprecation, Julia Darling introduces an irresistible cast of characters whose shared story is unforgettable.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderfully inventive interesting book!.......2004-11-25

This work is utterly unique and unlike anything I have ever read. Mixing surrealism and magic realism with the stark confronting realities of heartbreak and hardship, 'Crocodile Soup' is a magnificant and addictive little read and a individual find amongst lesbian centred fiction. It is particularly important to note that it is set in England, which gives it a unique and humourous voice amongst the predominantly American lesbian canon of literature.

The writing is quite poetically beautiful and somewhat reminscient of Lia Block's 'Dangerous Angels' series, though generally more pointed and less whimsical. I adored the short little chapters, which made this work quite a fast and enticingly simple but important read.

Additionally, the characters are utterly charming, whether they are likable or not. All the characters border on insanity (and some become so) and this lends the work an air of wonderful chaos and discord. They really are exceptional characterisations, and it is perhaps for this reason Darling's work is so successful.

Overall, a magical, wonderfully addictive and beautiful book which I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book.......2001-07-07

If you are interested in lesbian coming of age stories this one is of a higher quality than most others. It's funny and moving but also satisfyingly complex. You'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars glad you made it, Gert!.......2000-09-23

A great story interspersed with the Gert of now, who works hard at being invisible at a museum, with the Gert of her childhood. As a little girl she was frowned upon as an odd child and was relegated to sleep in the attic which she believed housed a ghost.

I am surprised poor Gert made it through her childhood! What a funny story it was! A distant mother, an odd twin, Frank, who she can telepathise with and a father who spends his time building a boat, and then sails off, never to return!

Life isn't easy for the adult Gert, but through friends in unlikely places she begins to come out of her shy self.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty and good for you...........2000-07-24

In this, her first novel, Julia Darling tells the story of Gert Hardcastle's pursuit of happiness. Gert is a lonely museum curator who has, as she always expected, managed to 'end up working in a quiet place, trying to be invisible. Afraid of everything'. Her early family life marked her out from the begining as one different from the others, a lost cause, but the arrival of the lovely Eva to work in the museum canteen promises to change all that.

The two narratives intertwine with each other. The tragic story of Gert's formative years is hilariously told and will strike many satisfying chords with anyone who's ever felt 'a bit different', invisible or even 'the devil incarnate'. In the present, Gert's tentative pursuit of Eva is punctuated by letters from her estranged mother and weird telepathic messages from twin brother Frank.

This book is very moving and terribly funny. The reader is never quite clear what is real and what is not, comedy and tragedy are so firmly entwined you don't even notice them strangling each other. Yes, everything about this book was brilliant - the humour, the narrative, the characters and even that rare thing - a satisfying plot structure.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing but entertaining crocodile soup.......2000-07-17

I'm still slightly unsure of why this book was entitled Crocodile Soup in the first place, and I guess I felt some confusion throughout the whole book. Though the author's voice is definitely quirky, and humorous, I found her style a bit difficult to follow at times. I did not tear through this book, but rather found myself wanting to finish it but having a tough time doing so. It was thought-provoking in that I felt like I had to concentrate to keep the plot and characters straight (is that a pun?) in my mind, which in a way seemed to be what Gert was doing. I did like the characters, particularly Harry, George, and Gert, and enjoyed the manner in which Julia Darling described scenarios in such a unique manner. I would only recommend this book to people who are looking for something "different" to read this summer!

We got this cookbook as a wedding present in 1959. Since then it's been the standard cookbook by which all others are judged - Irma Rombauer, James Beard, Julia Child, Graham Kerr, Mark Bittman and the rest. Each recipe is simply written and easily executed. Most important her taste is our taste. Her seasonings seem just right. One caveat - she likes her chicken on the "rare side" where we prefer it cooked to medium [no pink]. This is our only cookbook out of some 70 whose cover has come off (and not because Alfred Knopf skimped on the binding). If any cookbook is worth the money for the 'ONE GOOD RECIPE' you find in it, then this is worth the money 20 times over

                Book Description

If you were to join us in either of our homes at the end of almost any evening, or if you were to attend one of our retreats, we would invite you to do with us the process described in these pages. This book is about asking ourselves two questions: For what am I most grateful? For what am I least grateful? These questions help us identify moments of consolation and desolation. We call this process the examen.

"We have given retreats in over forty countries, and we find that regardless of culture or age group, this simple process is the most helpful way for people to hear the voice of God guiding them from within. For example, should people bring us many questions ranging from, 'Should I change my job?' to What can help me with my depression?' We usually suggest they spend the next month focusing each day on the examen questions. Such people often return a month later having discovered from their own experience of consolation and desolation exactly what they should do more of and less of in order to resolve their problem.

"For centuries, prayerful people have found direction for their days and for their lives by identifying these moments. Since even small children can do this, we have tried here to present the examen in a format that families, friends and communities can share and that will be easily accessible to anyone. We hope the examen will enrich your lives and your relationships as much as it has ours."

                5 out of 5 stars A Fine Book.......2007-04-06

I love this book, and have given it to several friends and family. My one suggestion is that the cover be revised, because it looks like a kid's book, and if ever you need to "sleep with bread" it's when you are an adult and have your own kids. The suggestions are helpful, and the stories are engaging.

                4 out of 5 stars Not a children's book..........2007-02-25

The cover of this book and its production format fooled me. (I want a hardback and one that looks like it is for adults.) While the beginning story is ABOUT children, the examen is for grownups. This examen process, however, is about as simple as it can get and one that speaks to just about everyone. Not only does this process work for a spiritual review of the day, but it can even frame a good business meeting! Asking the questions "What gives life the most?" and "What gives life the least?" are easily translatable to "What was viable in that process?" and "What was not viable in that process?" I found that my reviews of business processes were infused with Spirit after having read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and sound advice for everyday spirituality.......2007-01-14

For those who see themselves wanting to attain higher peace or spirituality in their daily routine, the authors have provided a simple yet abundant model. This is a wonderful gift for the new year, as people are shifting gears and looking to find a fresh routine that will yield them more satisfaction and happiness--and better decision making! The only reason I give this 4 stars and not 5 is I found myself wanting more! This is a great book for book clubs or prayer groups: a quick read which leads to some wonderful conversation.

5 out of 5 stars A Book To Be Read By All.......2007-01-03

This book was quoted by our pastor and I purchased it for our church library. I find it to be a wonderful, well written book with a message for our world.

5 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT PRAYER MADE SIMPLE FOR ALL.......2006-10-06

Timothy Gallagher recently published a book on the form of prayer called the Examination of Consciousness, a prayer of daily discernment of God's presence and activity in our lives. The value of that book is the extensive detail with which he examines each of the elements and aspects of that prayer. This book, on the other hand, is particularly valuable because of its simplicity. It summarizes the Examen in two simply questions, which may be posed in a wide variety of ways: what most and what least gave you life today. By holding on to what gives us life (in the words of the subtitle) we progress more and more into God's will for us and away from the things that God does not wish for us. It puts the moral life into a positive mode much wider than the commandments, and situates its essential nature in God's desire that we have life in abundance. The one fault of the book is that it looks too much like a kid's book and many adults may not get beyond the cover. But the book is designed and the prayer is presented in such a way that both book and prayer can be easily used by children, couples and families. This adds a wonderful communal and educative dimension that the prayer usually does not have; its suggestions can draw couples and families closer, and train children in on-going daily discernment. And of course it is usable by individuals as well. Do look beyond the cover, it is a book for all.
