This is my 2nd book by Omar and I was not impressed at all. I read "Leslie" sometime last year and didn't like it but I thought that I would try another one of his book. This story was very slow moving, to many details regarding "Radio". Did not like.

4 out of 5 stars Good for leisure reading, to unwind a bit.......2006-09-18

I thought this book was not as bad as some of these reviews suggest. I didn't think there needed to be a "point" Tyree needed to prove but that it was interesting enough just following this man's life story.

I bought it at an airport and read most of it on my roundtrip flights. It kept my attention, except toward the last 1/4 of the book.

It is nice to see a book about black people just dealing with relationships, life, and managing themselves. Much better than having to use graphic sexuality to maintain reader's interest as I've noticed a lot of authors doing.

4 out of 5 stars Overall Good Book.......2006-08-10

I got this book on audio and i must say it was a great listen. I didn't feel like having to read through the whole thing i figure that would take about a week, but i finished the audio tapes in 1 day. It was like you could see everything that was happening unfold right in front of your eyes by listening to it. THis is a great portrayal of the dating scene at times i found some of the situations he went through were some of the same as the ones i went through.

2 out of 5 stars More Like "A Typical Man".......2006-06-08

Why is the title "A Do Right Man"? I didn't get it. What was so do right about Bobby Dallas? He was the typical black man IMO. He ended up with a great job and salary and only THEN did he decide that HE was ready to settle down and Faye was supposed to be with it. NOT!

He played a couple of different women, was dishonest, and less than "right".

I only finished the book because I spent my hard owned money on it. This book was ENTIRELY too slow. It's like, please get to the point Omar Tyree. After this, I believe I am finished supporting him and his less than stellar novels. I only wish that I hadn't spent money on a black man writing about how hard it is for another black man out there in the dating and professional world when I can get that same sob story at any local hangout. SAVE IT and SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Genre: Fiction

This book A Do Right Man is about a brother from North Carolina that is educated and handsome. His name is Bobby Dallas. Bobby graduates from college in he profession of radio talk show. Bobby has everything a good man could ever want except a good woman by his side. After the heart-shattering breakup with his first love he is running in between jobs and woman for along while. As Bobby becomes more successful in his career he starts to make a lot of plans for his future in his professional, as well as his personal life. With those intentions he tries to mend broken relationships but he finds out that being a man that does right is not at all easy.
I like this book and I would strongly recommend people to read it. This book is well written and even though its fiction the kind of situations that the character in this novel runs into is things that we can experience in everyday life. Once you pick this book up it will be hard to put it down.

Book Description

From the author of There Goes the Bride, here is book that talks to women about a new approach to life—being single and thoroughly enjoy it! Rather than focusing on Mr. Right, women should use their dating experiences as a developmental process, a learning experience, a way of growing and maturing and deciding what you really want. Women can learn from Mr. Puppy Love, Mr. First Boyfriend, Mr. Swashbuckling Adventure, Mr. Sex, Mr. Serious Intellectual, Mr. Money, Mr. Best Friend, and others. Each chapter concludes with a section called "Been There, Learned This" which lists the specific learning experiences and lessons accomplished from each dating and relationship experience. The book is sharp, energetic, often humorous, and always on the mark.

4 out of 5 stars A new perspective on dating.......2004-06-21

I enjoyed Rachel's newest book a lot. Once again, she is able to point out the key lessons from life experience. What is interesting is she claims that dating should be something we learn from and approach it that way, not as something to be dreaded or that we HAVE to do. Maybe she is suggesting to make it a little less serious and take it for what it is, not as a means to an end. In a society where marital status still plays heavily into how we fit in, this book encourages us to date and learn about ourselves. It's not all about husband-hunting and that is okay. Take the pressure off. Embrace this time in your life.
Rachel does a good job of taking real life examples and making them pertinent to your own. You can see examples of atleast one man you have dated in this book. It's a refreshing new outlook. I really enjoyed it because it made me laugh.

The three titles edited, revised and combined in this volume, How To Do Things Right, How to Retire at 41, and How to Be Good, will have you laughing out loud, thinking hard, and at least temporarily rearranging your frazzled life. Hills is wise, witty, and very, very funny. His mission is to create order out of chaos; to make the arcane methodology of fussiness respectable; to elevate, and even ennoble, those fleeting instincts we all harbor to get our lives in order. All aspects of life are examined here: from how to eat an ice-cream cone to how to develop "principles" when you have none. But behind the frivolous facade, Hills remains a deeply sage and serious writer, a modern combination of Robert Benchley, Henry David Thoreau, and Michel de Montaigne. This is his best advice, served up from the heart of one of the most charming humorists to grace the American scene.

2 out of 5 stars The Revelations of a Silly Man.......2006-01-08

If you're from an upper middle class background and are concerned about issues like how to retire young on a limited income, this book may be of interest to you. Mr. Hills, former fiction editor at Esquire magazine, comes from that privileged background and discusses it at length. Unfortunately, it began to disappear in the 1960s and is pretty much gone as an option for today's bright Ivy League English major.

The publisher, David R. Godine, suffers from the hubris common to quality presses -- the idea that they have discovered literary gems that only need be published to be fully appreciated. Godine accomplished this with its publication of several volumes of Orwell's overlooked essays, but the rest of its output is undistinguished.

If you do decide to read it, read the third book (How to Be Good) first, particularly "Professional Ethics, as Against the Morality of an Occupation" which appears on pages 198-200. It is especially apposite in the current Bush era.

The one thing that one does expect from a small press of this type is quality bindings and covers (witness the now defunct, and much missed, North Point Press). While that is true of many of Godine's other products, this offering disappoints in that regard.

4 out of 5 stars A deserving classic.......2005-01-04

I first read L. Rust Hills when a friend loaned me his original little book (which is the first of this trilogy). His essays on such subjects as how to conduct a perfect dinner party, how to eat an ice cream cone, and so on are classics. This is not a book to be studied or pored through, but rather one to be picked up and enjoyed in small chunks.
But what about the other two books in the trilogy, here bound together? How To Be Good is not a book of humor, although it is written with humorous charm. It's a serious book about how to have morality in an immoral, or at least amoral, world. How To Retire At 41 starts out as a humorous look at how to adjust to retirement, and turns into a self-revelatory autobiography. Useful to start with and then affecting.
It's a surprise to have the trilogy together, but if you take each part in its own way (humor, morality, essay on life adjustment) it's really a gem.
Incidentally, I have several times lent my copy of How To Retire At 41 to friends contemplating retirement (or struggling with it) because it's very good in that regard. And I love the way it deals with, and dismisses, the question of finances in just a few sentences at the beginning!
For my vote, an excellent book to enjoy and to lend out. (Darn, who did I last lend my copy to???)

3 out of 5 stars Re-read recently.......2001-09-03

I read this book again recently after finding a copy at the library. I still am not overly fond of this book, but I don't dislike it as much as I used to. A lot of Mr. Hill's oppinions on life in general are very witty and reasonably funny. However, I still think that he dwells to much on the (un-funny) day-to-day routines of his life. Perhaps if he had sped things along a little I could have given his book four stars instead of three.

2 out of 5 stars Rambling old man.......2001-03-17

This guy really knows how to put people to sleep. I attempted to read this book on a flight from Dallas to Cincinatti. Thirty minutes after take-off (and when I began reading) I was fast asleep. As I never can sleep on planes, this can give you some idea how dull this book is. The first chapters were sort of funny, but the latter half seemed to be just a reproduction of his Day Runner ("6 pm January 17. Drool on self ") I think it could have been far better if the author had stuck to the actual title of the book (namely- How to do things right) instead of Ramblings of an old man.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Serious Philosophy.......2000-12-26

These highly comic essays start with simple instruction--how to eat an ice cream cone, how to fold a map--and move swiftly to more complex issues. In "How Not to Drink and Smoke So Much," for example, you can commiserate with Hills about the beloved 'tuddy' and learn from his early experiments in cutting down. Hills' aptitude for ingenious acronyms is displayed throughout the book. The essays become progressively more revealing--as when he describes a midlife breakdown in all its schizophrenic absurdity--and more seriously philosophical. His ideas about "undoing America," Montaigne, and about the desirability of eccentric traits are humorous, but they have a distinctly profound underside. I give this book to all my coolest friends.

Ladies, do you want to hold the key to a man's heart? Do you yearn to be a master of love who dates out of anticipation, not desperation? Of course, finding a Do Right man requires a strategy. If followed correctly, you can bet your new tube of lipstick you'll be married sooner than you can blink an eyelash. As young girls, we romanticized about the flowery trail of passion we would someday take to finally chant, "I do." Never did we envision such a short supply of Do Right men. But the problem is not a lack of men; rather it is the lack of skill on the woman's part. Read How to Find a Do Right Man so you won't be a spinster before your time!

A plain spoken writer must have been an amazing speaker and bold. Speaking in the south he said the war (For Southern Independence) was a good thing as our (southern) young men were becoming lazy as a result of slavery, thinking manule labor was beneath them, slaves work as it was, one lazy man would buy one slave then spend the day supervising him. Now (after the slaves where free) our young men could now do honest work and make something of themselves and the south. Thats tough to say especialy in the 1870s. A book of plain Gospel truths worth having. I gave my copy to a good friend and have looked for another copy since. No regrets about giving the copy away, hope I can find another though. Your's in Christ.

At last, USA Today bestselling author Lynn Kurland delivers her newest time travel romance. In the 1200s, Amanda of Artane has one summer to choose from her suitors--and find love forever.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More of a story of determination than romance..........2006-10-21

I won't re-tell the story, as so many other reviewers have already taken care of that. It's true that the romance between Jake and Amanda isn't as well developed as most of Lynn Kurland's stories. They don't spend all that much time together... they fall in love more with the character traits that they observe from a distance.

That said, it's still a wonderful, well-written book that tells the story of Jake's finding a family in the 13th century. He really becomes a part of the de Piaget family. This book is much better as part of the family series, than it is a stand-alone book. Read it... but read Another Chance To Dream and If I Had You first.

4 out of 5 stars A fun and fast paced read.......2006-08-02

This is another witty time-travel love story by Lynn Kurland. Jake Kilchurn is a wealthy and very successful jewelry designer. He is almost estranged from his father, runs his own business, and seems happy with where his life is going, until a visit to Artane and a car accident lands him right in the middle of medieval England.

Amanda de Piaget has been on the marriage block for two years now and is losing hope that there is someone out there who will marry her for who she is and not her impressive dowry. Her famed beauty is renowned throughout England and is debated even over 800 years later by those fortunate enough to have seen her. Amanda is considering the option of becoming a nun when Jake literally pops up in her world.

When they first meet, there is an instant connection, a chill that is enough to let them know that they were fated for each other. The problem, however, is that Jake's profession and lack of title and lands, in medieval times, are considered far beneath Amanda's station, and so they cannot marry. Jake has to find a way to get back to 2005, convert all his wealth to medieval gold coins, and try to make it back to 1227 before Amanda is married to another suitor.

Dreams of Stardust is an entertaining read, not much action, but enough plots to keep you interested. The characters are, of course, vibrant and lively, with plenty of background material to add richness to the storyline. All in all, it isn't as compelling or earth-shattering as, say, This Is All I Ask, but still an enchanting tale.

4 out of 5 stars Off to another vivid and entertaining adventure!.......2006-07-24

This tale was wonderfully funny, nail biting and full of old friends, rich characters who have become family, and it was lovely to be reunited with them!
Alas, I did not like the heroine very much. She was rather stupid. I dislike stupidity in my lead female characters. She took chances with her safety that just didn't make sense, unless one was seriously deficient in the brain box. But Lynn Kurland makes me happy and takes me away...important attributes in today's world. She must never stop writing!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dreams of Stardust.......2006-03-10

Dreams of Stardust failed to adequately develop the romance between the two main characters. Family relationships were developed and explored more than the romance. Not the best Kurland novel, but certainly not a terrible one, either. Just sort of lackluster.

              4 out of 5 stars A calmer romance.......2006-02-23

There isn't nearly as much danger or adventure in this one as many of her others, but she does go into the characters lives enough to still make it an engaging read (I was up 'til 3am). I loved being able to catch up with the lead couples from several of her other books, too. I've wondered how long it would take to get the De Piaget branches to meet, and the results are pretty amusing. This may not be the best introduction to Kurland's families, but it won't give anything crucial away to first-timers. All around, it's a fun, light read.

3 out of 5 stars The usual mediocre fair.......1999-10-14

Like so many books in the furturistic romance genere this book contains many nicely done originial concepts along with the usual plot holes big enough to fit a mac truck through. The romance was rather dull and although non-stop sex was alluded to most of the romance scenes consisted of a brief description to the effect of 'and when hours later they were finly sated they cuddled'. Not my idea of steamy, that's for sure. All in all, about average for this kind of book which is really not much of a recommendation.

              5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......1999-04-08

I had just finished reading Dara Joy's Matrix series when this book was recommended. It was really a treasure to find.

5 out of 5 stars I thought this book was a fun break from everyday romance........1999-01-26

I really enjoyed this book for the most part. There were things that I thought could be explained better about the whole "plot by the evil race." But overall this book was very enjoyable for people who like futuristic books. The woman is not totally a "slave" to the man and can defend herself both physically and with her mind, which is unusual to most romance books. I think that is what made me keep reading this one. I could not put it down.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Hot & Steamy.......1998-06-23

This is the type of book that I love to find. I can re-read it many times and never get bored and still be turned on by the love scenes. Definitely a keeper.

                      Book Description

“Here is one of the most faithful and insightful pastors of our time, addressing the most crucial issues of church life. Mark Dever refuses to separate theology and congregational life, combining pastoral insight with clear biblical teaching. This book is a powerful antidote to the merely pragmatic approaches of our day—and a refutation to those who argue that theology just isn’t practical.”
                      R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“This book is the perfect example of what a truly practical book on church health and growth should be—it gives concrete guidance for and examples of biblical principles being put into practice in the life and ministry of the local congregation.”
                      J. Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi

“Rare indeed are books on the church that begin with the Gospel. Rarer still are books that derive methodology for building the church from the Gospel. This excellent book does both.”
                      C. J. Mahaney, Sovereign Grace Ministries

The Deliberate Church shares many of the ministry lessons that Dr. Dever and his colleagues have learned from Scripture and sought to implement in the life of their church community. This book is for anyone who wants to get serious about following the biblical pattern for the church and is looking for down-to-earth practical help.”
Philip Graham Ryken, Senior Minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia

“Here is a novel idea: use the Bible as a handbook to gather and guide the church! And The Deliberate Church is a novel volume indeed, standing amid the spate of ‘church-as-corporation, pastor-as-CEO’ manuals that glut church life. Here is a book that wafts a radical, refreshing breeze from the pages of Scripture that will breathe life into the church. A crucial read.”
                      R. Kent Hughes, Senior Pastor, College Church in Wheaton (Illinois)

                      5 out of 5 stars Not you're CEO Pastor!.......2007-07-14

We live in a day and age where biblical preaching and good old theological teaching has taken a back seat and the CEO Pastor is in the front! This is not the case with Mark Dever. I read this book right before I became an elder, which helped me greatly.

Once I finished the book, I thought, is this really, how this church functions? I had to find out, so I took a trip to Capital Hill Baptist to see for myself. It was nice to see that Capital Hill Baptist operated in the exact way described in Devers' book. Not only that, but I "interrogated" one of the interns, and he described their elder's meetings exactly the way the book did.

If you are a church leader, I would highly recommend that you read this book. This book was intended to be the sequel to Devers' previous book, 9 marks of a healthy church, which is also fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Read The Deliberate Church!!!.......2007-06-21

The Deliberate Church (TDC) is a self-conscious attempt to make some headway into the overblown "The ___________ Church" genre by teaching pastors how to build "the church on and around the Gospel of Christ" (21) with the goal of liberating "both leaders and members from the tyranny of popular growth models and church fads" (202).

A deliberate church intentionally infuses absolutely everything it does with the Gospel! My goal here is to overview the book, and give some highlights.

On the first page of the introduction the authors write their thesis: "Ignoring God's plan for the church and replacing it with your own will ensure the eternal futility of your work" (25). Let that sink in! Along those same lines they write: "Our power is not in having small groups, or meeting the felt needs of our target audience, or using the right evangelism program, or having funny skits, or providing plenteous parking, or targeting our ministries to postmoderns. Our power is in our unique message--the Gospel (27).

The introduction and conclusion alone are worth the retail price. Overall, the book is divided into four sections that help the reader deliberately apply the gospel to the growing of a church, the gathering of a church on Sunday, the choice of elders and the elders meetings.

The first section was a 75-page summary of Dever's 9 Marks of a Healthy Church; however, it was geared towards practically doing what was written as theory in 9 Marks.

My favorite parts were his understanding of the pastor's job--the 4 P's = expository Preaching, Praying, developing Personal discipling relationships, and being Patient (ch. 1)--his explanation and application of the gospel (43-5), what to avoid in evangelism (54-56) and his biblical case for and application of church membership (60-5). Remember, "God is happiest to entrust His flock to those shepherds who do things His way" (40) and "God's purposes for all of human history revolve around the local church as the visible, corporate manifestation of His Son" (72).

Section 2 (the longest in TCD) helps the corporate gathering of the church become Gospel-centered. They begin by arguing that God cares about how we worship (ch. 6); therefore, our Sundays should revolve around Reading, Preaching, Praying, Singing and Seeing (in baptism & the Lord's Supper) the Bible (81-6). In ch. 8 they argue the role of the pastor flows from a biblical understanding of what a church is to be and do, meaning the "most important and fundamental role of the pastor is to preaching the Gospel clearly" (89). There is also a lot of practical help here on staff meetings, the purpose of the weekly church services (ch. 9), baptism & communion (ch. 10), cultivating love in your church (ch. 11) and music (ch. 12).

My favorite part is his summary of pastoral ministry: The 3 G's = Graze (feed the people God's Word), Guide (lead God's people), Guard (protect God's people) (94-5) and their conclusion: "every element of the main weekly gathering should have positive warrant from Scripture.... This may seem constrictive...[but] it will actually liberate you from the tyranny of the latest innovation or the most popular fad" (126).

Section 3 is about choosing elders. He argues that the words elder, pastor, bishop, overseer all refer to the same office (cf. Acts 20:17-38, 1 Peter 5:1-2) and that there are only two church offices in the NT, elder and deacon (cf. Phil 1:1, 1 Tim 3:1-13). He argues persuasively for a plurality of elders (over against the Moses, single, solitary pastor model) (ch. 13). The rest of the section gives practical advice on how to choose elders biblically (character recognition before training), how to assess their ability and character (chs. 15-16), how to patiently transition a church into an elder-led model (ch. 17) and choose church staff (ch. 18).

Section 4 is a very practical section on structuring the Bible and prayer (ch. 19), the agenda (ch. 20), the decision-making process (ch. 21) and attitudes of elders meetings around the gospel. He gives good advice here on how to fill the time at a meeting (chs. 19-20), the senior pastor's role as a model of the Gospel in these meetings (185-6, 189-92), delegation of responsibilities, equipping the other elders (173-5), and determining the annual budget (186-7).

The book ends with summarizing a deliberate church as one that is Godward-looking (195-7) for growth and Outward-looking (197-202) to serve other people, other churches and other countries with the Gospel.

In conclusion, I loved The Deliberate Church! It was a little slow in places, but overall it is the most practical book on what a church and it's leadership is supposed to be and do that I've ever read! Though it's a bit repetitive if you've read 9 Marks and I do not agree with all it advocates, I highly recommend it and agree with R. Kent Hughes that this book "wafts a radical, refreshing breeze from the pages of Scripture that will breathe life into the church" (back cover).

5 out of 5 stars Emerging from the Chaos.......2007-02-25

Mark Dever's latest book, a companion to "Nine Marks," offers the novel idea that church leaders should build church ministry on the Bible. In "The Deliberate Church," Dever demonstrates that a thorough study of the Gospel offers everything needed for church life and church godliness.

In a day when we tend toward a modernistic approach to church (the pastor as the CEO) and a post-modern approach to the church (the people and their opinions as CEO), it is refreshing to hear a voice crying in the wilderness. Dever reminds us of what we should not have forgotten: the Bible is relevant--eternally so and actually so day-by-day.

Dever outlines four broad areas of Gospel ministry and in so doing provides a practical ecclesiology: a theology of church life and church leadership. Because no one book can say everything, readers desiring more insight into body life ("one anothering" and spiritual friendships) and personal/corporate spiritual formation (the spiritual disciplines) may want to supplement "The Deliberate Church" with other pertinent reading. However, start here with a foundation for building ministry on the Gospel.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Spiritual Friends, Soul Physicians, Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction, "Biblical Psychology," and "Martin Luther's Pastoral Counseling."

Cover to cover, this book outlines a gospel-centered plan of action for the local church pastor. Dever and Alexander pleasingly blend theology and methodoloy in this practical book. I strongly recommend it for those involved in church leadership - particularly seminary students or young pastors.

This is one of the best books on growing a church that I have ever read. It is rooted in Scripture and comes from the pen of a working pastor who cares deeply about the local church.
