Book Description

The world's most powerful leaders are gathering in Los Angeles for the G-8 summit, unaware that they have been targeted by two separate terrorist groups, each with its own lethal agenda. Uncovering and disarming one bomb would be difficult enough; eliminating both will be nearly impossible.

On the trail of a rabid Islamic assassin, rogue CTU agent Jack Bauer doesn't know that another conspiracy is brewing around him—a poisonous plot to violently dictate the future of the free world. If Bauer does nothing, in twenty-four hours the entire planet may be plunged into chaos, its primary heads of state ruthlessly destroyed. But if he acts, his daughter Kim will die instead.

Typical 24 fashion, lots of action, had to keep reading.. enjoyed the book immensely.. looking forward to reading the other Declassified books!

1 out of 5 stars Willing to Suspend Disbelief, BUT.............2007-05-14

Its a little hard to swallow when, after six years of black SUV's used in the pursuit of terrorists, that Jack Bauer would borrow a Prius. But I guess this is eco-friendly-universe Jack. Yikes.....

4 out of 5 stars Jack takes a day off and relaxes... psych!.......2007-04-04

Overall, it's a pretty good book. Very well paced, and as it is for all of these novels, it is fun to see how Jack interacted with many of the characters how are now dead on the show (Tony, Terri, Nina, Chappelle, etc.). Obviously this is never as deep and rich as the television show, in fact, most of what happens in the book could have been covered in 3-5 episodes, but as a book, it does keep up the pace we expect on 24.

My biggest complaint is John Whitman's lack of continuity. For example, in the first sentence of the book, Detective Mercy Bennett is driving an Audi A4, but on page 25 she was driving a white Crown Victoria (probably her police cruiser, but never explained). He later describes someone else driving a Toyota Sentra (no such car exists-it is actually Nissan that makes the Sentra). His descriptions of the Federal building were accurate and it was obvious that he'd spent a little time there.

I think books like this are a great addition to the 24 world. I love that they are including characters like Henderson and some of Jack's other bosses... now that I think about it, I think being jack's boss is a lethal position. Eventually he'll have something to do with your death! Lol

Anyway back to the book. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the show. I just wish they'd come out with these books during the off season of 24 so that they'd fill in the dead time for us 24 addicts.

4 out of 5 stars SOLID BOOK!!! ADDS TO AN ALREADY GREAT SERIES!!!!.......2007-03-23

This book from start to finish was fluidly written. It keeps your interest with something that might make people put down the book (eco-terrorism). The author spins that aspect of the book to make it compelling to read about. I always loved in the TV show and books when they tie in more of Jack's personal life and this book really does that. Overall, I gave this book four stars because it wasn't a gripping as some of the previous books in the series, but it's still a fun read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cats Claw.......2007-03-17

This book along with the others is a great book to read about Jack Bauer before and durring seasons of 24.

I LOVE IRIS JOHANSEN!!!! ALL OF THE BOOKS I HAVE READ OF HERS ARE GREAT!!!!! READ THEM, YOU WON'T BE DISAPOINTED!

4 out of 5 stars Exciting plot, memorable characters.......2006-02-05

This was a great love story. Set during the Crusades, the story was fast-paced, the characters were well-developed, and the plot was engaging. I could relate to the main characters: Ware with his compulsive desire to protect everyone around him and Thea with her often stubborn insistence on freedom. Kadar, Ware's half Frankish-half Armenian best friend, was an intriguing character. The secondary friendship/romance between Thea's little sister, Selene, and Kadar was poignant--they were both such isolated, self-reliant people, who found in each other a reason to be less so. Ware's secret, when it was revealed, was surprising and thought-provoking. Considering the story's setting during the Third Crusade and the condition of women in the 12th century, I believe that the Knight Templars' secret was potentially catastrophic, and the danger to Ware and everyone close to him, real. In a perfect world, their secret needn't have been so. But then, the "best of all possible worlds" doesn't exist.

5 out of 5 stars Lion Bride- OUSTANDING READ- I NEED A SEQUEL with KADAR and SELENE!.......2005-07-27

This book is wonderful. READ IT, you will be glad you did.
I, like many other reviewers here, humbly beg this outstanding author to write a sequel -with Kadar and Selene. PLEASE I NEED the sequel !!
This book was probably one of my favorites ever. I read the Tiger Prince A LONG time ago and happened across this at a book store. SO GLAD i picked it up. I have printed a list of ALL of her other books so I can read them.
I think this was a true epic. It is not all flowers and roses (maybe mulberry trees) but it is perfect, AND historically correct as it is. And I disagree with the other reviewer about Vaden and Ware's ending. I think their ending was perfect. I really do hope the ending is leading up to a sequel with Kadar and Selend...have I mentioned that ??
Thanks for an outstanding book !

3 out of 5 stars good but not best.......2003-05-01

Overall, I enjoyed the book. In the beginning, the hero is totally crass and I did have to wonder where his redeeming graces were. The heroine was well drawn and feisty.

But the people who REALLY intrigued me were the side characters of Selene and Kadar. I literally have dog-eared their pages and reread them. I would sit through this book if only to get to sequel with them.

Setting was great, there was lots of action (and mulberry trees). Good knights. Bad knights. Knights that you think are bad but maybe are not so bad. Evil assasins. Silk.

But Jo, if you ever read this...give us Kadar and Selene. Their ending left me unsatisfied. I wanted to follow them and then you stopped!!

5 out of 5 stars Lion's Bride = Superb.......2003-02-10

Once you read this book, you can never put it down. The characters and storyline are written very well. The romance in the story is powerful. This book is definately worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Okay Read.......2007-08-15

I did not care for either main character in this book.

Lyon was told to marry Ariana by the King. He does so begrudgingly and then sends her off to a convent for 5 YEARS.

Then, when he is pressured by the King to produce an heir (legitimate), he goes to the convent to get her.

I guess, for this era, it was fine. Frustrated me, though.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Bodice Ripper.......2006-06-19

It's like your basic plot for any bodice ripper trying to pretend at "historical fiction". Hero and heroine on opposite sides, can't stand each other but attracted none the less. Fall madly in love, evil people break them up, the hero comes to the rescue and happy ever after. Ho hum.

If you really want a good story based on the Conquest of 1066 with WELL WRITTEN, believable characters, storyline and REAL HISTORY, try Elizabeth Chadwick's The Conquest.

2 out of 5 stars Hero is the king of the double standard.......2006-05-05

Well, I know that my complaints are actually in keeping with the time period the story is set in, but these things still bothered me. Lyon, the hero, should have been called "Mr. Double Standard".

Why? Well, here's some examples: he's horrifed when he walks in on Ariana being beaten by the abbess. Yet he says that a man can have cause to beat his wife to keep her in line. Nice--not!

He demands that Ariana be faithful to him, yet he has a mistress. He is prepared to send her back to the abbey (and be beaten numerous times for the rest of her life) if she has betrayed him. Yet he's betrayed his wedding vows by keeping a mistress, and this is okay. Again, I know that this is in keeping with the time period, but not something that I like.

Also, I felt that he was ruled by his sex organs, which is not something I find very heroic. Having a healthy sex drive? I have no problem with that. But not being able to think about anything else by getting laid? Yuck.

This is the second story that I tried by Mason, and both times have been turned off by unlikeable characters. There will not be a third.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE to start your collection.............2006-01-11

I THOUGHT Lyon and Ariana were great together in this book, well written and great sex and her love scenes are really good. I thought she made Lyon a wonderful hero and i like the way she made Lyon committed to Ariana, now Ariana is a little strong will at first but the way Connie Mason brought them together was Wonderful...

I suggest you get this book because Connie Mason did a great job when she was writting this book, if your a Connie Mason fan you know she is a great author, if this is your first time reading this author make this your first book...

5 out of 5 stars This book sizzles!.......2005-03-29

The year is 1067 and William the Conqueror is the new King of England. Along the borderlands of Northumbria, Ariana of Cragmere grieves at the news of her father and three brothers' death at the Battle of Hastings. At the age of fourteen and with merely a handful of knights left to protect her, she awaits her fate at the hands of the Norman invaders.

Lyon of Normandy is a staunch defender of the Norman King. A landless knight, he is a fierce and hardened warrior who bears the taint of his bastardy. Having saved William's life before, he finds himself rewarded greatly as the new Lord of Cragmere. But he also reluctantly finds himself with a new bride in the form of Lady Ariana.

When Lyon meets Ariana for the first time, he is surprised to find that his bride to be has not even ripened into womanhood. Yet he sees the promise of great beauty in the years to come and finds himself looking forward to that day. In the meantime, he leaves her under the care of the nuns at St. Claire Abbey hoping to tame her, which only added to Ariana's hate and fury.

Five years later and the King orders Lyon to finally take his place as Lord of Cragmere and fetch Ariana from the abbey. And so he goes and is surprised to find that his child bride's fiery disposition hasn't been subdued and her hate much worse. But was she a sight to behold! Lyon finds himself desiring her like he had no other woman. Ariana on the other hand is deeply unsettled by his effect on her but still vows to never surrender to this Norman knight.

THE LION'S BRIDE is a novel about two born enemies brought together by the manipulation of an ambitious king. It is a wonderfully told novel oozing with sensuality and passion. The way the story unfolds is such a good read. The way this fierce knight helplessly falls for the sharp-tongued vixen, loving her against all logic to the point that she becomes indispensable to him is so exciting to read. And when he sacrifice his pride and honor and denounce his king for her, it made my heart melt.

This is a sizzling story that is guaranteed to keep you glued. I look forward to reading more of Connie Mason's books.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot get enough............2006-08-24

Another great book by Ms St John.
Another fast moving , heart warming, brilliant tale of an alpha male in need of adventure only to find true love, with a unique twist as expected in a book penned by Ms St. John. (Please read synopsis on Product review page)
It is filled with a great amount of necessary history of the genre to bring the story along.
Every description of each person, building, street etc jumps out at you as you read the book, the images vivid in your head just like it was meant to be.
I love the cultural differences between the Hero/Heroine and their willingness to adjust to each other even in the end when it would have been unnecessary.
I wanted to see more of the Heroine's Fidai skills though. She was portrayed as the only female worthy to be called a Fidai, but we didn't get to see much of what she was capable of doing. I also enjoyed the pre-story to Garreth of Fallonmour and seeing a cameo appeareance by Calab "Blackheart" and Emma, Isabel and Griffin and their "TWINS"!!!!!

MY ONLY PROBLEM: Was at the end of the book, when they all returned back to England, and in two-three months the Heroine was decribed to have "almost lost" her arabic accent when speaking English"
This is VERY impossible, (SPOILER WARNING)---> if she was abducted at the age of two and spoke Arabic and the Lingua Franca literally all her life , how could she have lost her accent in a mere two months????? Even if she tried very hard to fake it, there is no way she would have been able to dislodge her accent.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Medieval Romance.......2005-04-18

This is one of my favorite romance books because it is wonderfully different from the typical medieval romance tale. It has depth, tension (not just romantic tension), and uniqueness. One of the major things I've been annoyed by in romance books (esp. those by Johanna Lindsey) is that they either make you really pity the main characters or make the heroine unbelievably headstrong..to a point where you just want to slap some sense into them when they are in their defiance mode. This book doesn't appear to use either of those techniques and I am truly grateful for not having to roll my eyes after every page.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, until the author cops-out........2004-06-26

I did enjoy this book but I had to give it 3 stars because I was totally disappointed and felt the author really copped out when 1/2 way through the book it's revealed ------ Don't read further if you don't want to know -- our heroine, Zahirah is not really Arab at all, but English! Not even 1/2 Arab. Not even a speck of Arab. In fact Sebastian doesn't even really declare his love to Zahirah until he suspects it...although I think it's clear he would have loved her regardless. I don't know why the author felt it necessary to do this. But it sort of wrecks the main premise and conflict of the book, that Sebastian and Zahirah can't help themselves and love each other despite their vast ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. The result: it just doesn't deliver the same punch (even though Zahirah doesn't know this about herself until near the end).

5 out of 5 stars Unique story line, Beautiful romance.......2003-12-11

Sebastian and Zahirah are a refreshingly sweet couple. For once, the hero of the story does not spend most of the book denying his feelings. Sebastian falls true and hard for Zahirah, proclaiming:

"I love you. I don't care if you're brown or white. I don't care if you're English, Arab, half of each, or not of this world at all. I love you."

The entire book is filled with beauty like this. Tina St. John makes your heart do flip- flops with pure romance and steamy love scenes that never disappoint, nor do they get too repetative.

Both the hero and heroine are devoted to one another, enough so to turn away from their own people, and risk their own lives to protect one another.

When you sit down with this book, be prepared to stay in your seat. You won't be able to put the book down. You'll enjoy exciting sword battles, steamy love scenes, sweet romance, and a great base- story that keeps the book moving.

5 out of 5 stars Will leave you smiling and wanting more!.......2003-05-18

I am on a great reading roll lately with excellent books, most recently this wonderful follow on title to Tina St. John's WHITE LION'S LADY. The romance in BLACK LION'S BRIDE was even more than I hoped for! How can you top a story that has a great, dark and dangerous warrior hero and an elusive, deadly assassin (femme fatale) for a heroine? I don't think you can! It's a story filled with emotion, action, and lots of passion that we romance readers all love. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars King Henry would be so proud of how he was portrayed in this Historical Romance Medieval novel.......2006-09-02

I have not been reading medieval novels long but I can say of all the ones I've read so far this is the best!
You know how you read some novels and either one of the protagonist is told something by a Villain just to drive a wedge between the Hero/Heroine and that becomes the basis of the book. You know those kind of matters that could be solved in just a few sentences?....well there were SEVERAL in this book and because I'm so used to the "big misunderstanding" I was so sure that this was where the plot of this book was headed. But boy was I wrong, and I'm so grateful that Ms Stuart has such an imaginative mind as to keep the syntax of this book moving without the major stupid factor as the plot.
I loved this very resourceful, intelligent and amazing heroine. I was cheering for her the entire way. I did start to get annoyed at her patience with her ever swooning older sister.
The hero to me was my type of Hero, strong alpha male with so much power. The loyalty of his men was another touching thing for me and he was a great leader in that essence.
Of course based on history we knew Henry would eventually be King and the way the book was written to bring the conflict between the Hero and the future King to peace was brilliantly written. I love when history is interwoven with romance.
(SPOILER) I even had a tear jerker moment when we all thought our Hero had died, and his men one by one fell on their knees in honor of their lady.....
I could go on and on, this book awesome!!!!!!!!!! 10 BRILLIANT STARS!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Love the history, very good book........2006-03-13

It started out a little slow, but picked up once the King arrived at the castle. I love the strong heroine. I also love the description of history during that period of time. I got quite worried about how the H/H were able to survive because the hero was so royal to the wrong king. I am so glad it all worked out in the end.

I would have given 5 stars if not for the adultry the hero commited. What a senseless act, especially he's been so good to the heroine and he was falling in love with her. I never understand why he thought sleeping with another would help him stop loving his wife. I was pretty angry with him and her through the rest of the book. He never recovered in my eyes, such petty excuse. I also hate to see she ran into his arms after what he did to her. I would love to see her slap him a few times instead of cut the serving girl's hair. I would love to see him on the knees instead of her. He deserved some kind of punishment not the serving girl. He got off way too easy. Ok, that's my only regret. I am still fuming about it you can see.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2002-09-30

Jocelyn Montagne was always treated as more of the black sheep in her family, especially when compared to the silvery blonde beauty of her step-sister. She was the product of a politically arranged marriage that her father was forced into. Jocelyn was capable and worked beside the servants, therefore when her father and step-brother were called away, she could assume the duties of chatelane.

Arrogant, dangerous and blessedly handsome, Robert de Langley waited for the right moment and choose that time to re-claim the de Langley castle that the Montagnes had stolen from his family thru treachery. Robert reclaimed the castle and faced the daughter of his enemy, Jocelyn.

Armed with a small dirk, Jocelyn, stood up to Robert with strength and determination and negotiated her and her sisters imprisonment. She may have appeared strong, but underneath she was not immune to the handsome warrior, Robert de Langley. They developed a friendship based on respect for each other that soon blazed into a most compelling and sensual love story.

This was my first book by this author and certainly not to be my last if this is an indication of her taleny. The Historical details added so mych flavor to this stunningly beautiful tale. Definitely a keeper and not to be missed. The love scenes are wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars a very good touching story.......2000-11-06

Bride of the lion by elizabeth stuart is about Jocelyn montagne who is left to guard her fathers fortress when Robert DELangley the original owner comes to take back what is rightfully his. Robert is known as the fabled lion of normandy and decides to hold his enemy's daughters hostage for his lands. This book was so well written I felt jocelyns pain, her father not loving her as much as her sister and brother who was also very mean. They would tell her she was ugly and abuse her until Robert showed up and admired her spirt when she did not swoon at the slightest threat. He also showed her she was not ugly but beautiful! Even in though he did not want to fall in love with her. this is one of the best books I have ever read!

4 out of 5 stars Bride of the Lion.......2000-08-17

This is the first of her books that I have read. I highly recommend it. The first couple of chapters are not up to the writing skill portrayed in the rest of the book. I was not able to put it down, once I got into the story. Strong characterizion and plot according to historical time frame. Good reading.

              Book Description

Packed with hard-core action written by battle-savvy combat veterans, the explosive Starfist series has become hugely popular across America. Now the saga of the courageous Marines continues in Flashfire, as the 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST) ventures to the edge of Human Space to fight a number of enemies . . . some on their own side.

Tensions erupt between the Confederation and several frontier worlds when civilians are shot dead at an army base on the planet Ravenette. Enraged, the Ravenette government and nine neighboring planets form a coalition, and their first act of secession is to overrun Ravenette’s Confederation garrison. With the armed forces of ten worlds seizing the brutal upper hand, the embattled troops need help–now–and they need it bad.

Enter the Marines of the 34th FIST. As the nearest ready-to-deploy unit, the team is sent to Ravenette with orders to hold the line until reinforcements arrive. The upcoming operation promises to be no picnic, for while sophisticates may ridicule the backward ways of the uncouth frontier folk, no one scoffs at their fighting ability.

Charlie Bass doesn’t mince words for his men in Company L’s third platoon. Two army divisions–perhaps thirty thousand soldiers–are being overwhelmed, and somebody expects a thousand Marines to save the day. As pompous Confederation generals wreak even more havoc than the enemy, there are those who call the mission suicide . . . but not the Marines.

Of course it sounds hopeless, but for Marines like Charlie Bass and the rest of the 34th FIST, accomplishing the impossible comes with the territory.

              5 out of 5 stars Flashfire .......2007-09-07

It's an extremely well written book. I love the storyline it fits perfectly into the way the modern day military is controlled by political robots who know nothing about fighting a war. I look forward to the next book and hope to enjoy the adventures of the 34th fist last a long time.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't make it past page 130.......2007-07-27

I felt nothing from this book, I didn't even hate it enough to give one star. This story is mediocre.

As far a military science fiction goes, Starfist: Flashfire had the worst plot shortcuts jammed together in one volume. It's the future, say at least one thousand years, mankind is all over our galaxy. The all male (both sides, apparently) military still frequents whorehouses named 'Big Barb's', doesn't have anything like a force screen to stop flying debris that incite a lethal riot, and still uses weapons from the 1980's. Nothing like a knock-out field, but lots of planes, tanks, guns, and sidearms. I expected science fiction. I didn't get it.

This is military fiction as it's most indifferent, as the 'leaders' on both sides lament how they knew disaster inevitable, but they were powerless to stop the consensus bureaucracy. I like to think in the far future humanity might stop making the same stupid mistakes. I didn't care about the characters -- typical politicians re-enacting incidents ripped off from American history (example: galactic congressman with a Southern accent who re-enacts the historical metal tipped cane beating of the 1800's by Senator Brooks of Senator Sumner) and standard enlisted men.

Don't buy or read this book. If you want military fiction read Bujold's ten volumes of Miles Vorkosigan, Scalzi's "Old Man's War," S.M. Stirling, Heinlein, David Weber, or John Ringo.

Wait for Firestorm to be available. This is only the first half (I hope it's half and not 1/3!) of the story.
Not the best of the Starfist books, perhaps that will change when the next part comes out. Of course, that could be a year or more and who will remember the details and characters by then? I'm very disappointed. Still, it was fun while it lasted. I won't go over the story, that's already been covered in other reviews; just let me warn you that you won't be satisfied with how it ends.

3 out of 5 stars More story than action.......2007-05-08

I've been reading and enjoying all the Starfist and Force Recon books and this book was very annoying for two reasons:

First there is a lot of "filler" which has nothing to do with the main story plot to relieve confederation army troops. It appears the "filler" was inserted to increase the size of the book, not add anything useful in developing the plot.

And, second, taking up 350 pages without concluding the plot is extremely annoying. I don't have to be left "hanging" so I'll buy the next book in the series - it's a cheap trick unworthy of real authors (or, perhaps, publishers.)

All this aside, and overlooking so much trivia, this is a good story, a good plot, and the familiar characters of the 34th FIST are always interesting. So I'll be waiting next year when Firestorm appears in paperback.

3 out of 5 stars The end of creativity.......2007-05-03

Like some of the other reviewers I've been disappointed that this story was broken up into two parts. Since I'm not dying to know what happens, I may not buy the second book. When I started reading this book, I recognized the storyline, even though its set in the 25th century. Its the American Civil War! I was hoping for a little more creativity in the story development but I guess all the stories have been told. I would have given this story 2 stars for its lack of creativity and ending in the middle, but the story was a well written knock off of American history so I gave it an extra star.

                    Book Description

Culture Shift, written for church leaders, ministers, pastors, ministry teams, and lay leaders, leads you through the process of identifying your church’s distinctive culture, gives you practical tools to change it from the inside-out, and provides steps to keep your new culture aligned with your church’s mission. Real transformation is not about working harder at what you’re already doing or even copying another church’s approach but about changing church culture at a foundational level.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fresh Outlook.......2006-11-11

This book was eye-opening for me, and gave me a fresh new prespective on the life of a church. We need to focus less on self and on the future of the church to bring life and vitality to the church.

4 out of 5 stars Culture changes everything, including the future!.......2006-11-11

This book is about how to think, not what to think. It is a great book that helps pastors and leaders see the importance of setting the culture rather than trying to do patchwork quick-fixes on the church. Because culture has a way of communicating itself, if culture is not changed, things would slide back to what they were, and may continue to deteriorate.

Your culture is the lens through which you view your life. If you change the lens, you change your outlook. Change the culture, and everything else changes, including the future. Changing a culture is an inside-out approach that transforms the place. Transformation can never be brought in from the outside. Transformation is inside work, and every church already possess the elements that can bring it about.

Because culture shapes the church, and leaders make the culture, this book helps leaders work through cultural issues in their church, and to find ways to change and incarnate the godly culture that they would want. In this book are also questions and suggesstions that guide the reader into looking at how things are, working out where you want to go, and areas to focus on to take you there. In general, a church that goes through a culture shift would likely go through the following (pg. 183-4):

                    1. Identify and believe God's promises about your church's potential.
                    2. Model kingdom culture personally.
                    3. Enlist allies to champion the culture shift.
                    4. Focus on "what we're becoming."
                    5. Compare the vision of the future to present reality.
                    6. Outline a specific, doable pathway.
                    7. Help it filter through the church, and learn from feedback you receive.
                    8. Stay focused on transformed people, and on those receptive to change.
                    9. Make heroes of people who best represent the kingdom values.
                    10. Celebrate every success, and give God the glory.
