Not her best series.......2006-01-30
This series is too simplisitic and not as in depth as her other series. It is enjoyable to read once for a light afternoon break, but not worth a second read.
When Dreams Cross.......2005-07-20
After the first book, Never Again Say Good-bye, this book followed Blackstocks style perfectly. I was more able to identify with these characters than the first books, so it drew me in a little more. This was another good one from Terri Blackstock.
Timely.......2002-06-26
Terry Blackstock's "When Dreams Cross" is a well written story about the distructiveness and havoc that too much pride can have on a relationship. Without preaching, this talented author gives readers insight into the struggle we all face to let GOD be first in our lives and to learn to bend to his will. This is my first Blackstock book and I am now a fan with the intent to read more from this great author.

A Great Battle of His & Her Wills!.......2000-10-03
This well done romance begins strong in first chapter with development of two strong-willed, prideful people who need each other to accomplish their dreams. Could feel the torrents of clashes between Justin and Andi keenly, inside and out, and enjoyed the challenging roller coaster of circumstances that finally grounds their mutual faith and drives them to work together. Marked my book throughout with checks where the author delivers memorable descriptive phrases, such as, "Just Justin. The words didn't go together. It was like saying, 'Just napalm.'"
Suspense and mystery entwined with romance.......2000-05-30
This is the first of Blackstock's novels that I ever read, and have since read all of Second Chances, Suncoast Chronicles, and Newpointe 911. The romance part of When Dreams Cross was not very creative and it was easy for me to figure out that Justin and Andi would eventually find each other in the end. However, what made this book great was the suspense and mystery throughout the story and the apparent sabotage of Promised Land. This thread of trying to figure out "whodunnit" kept me reading until the outcome and was the first inkling that I got that Blackstock is a much stronger suspense writer than she is romance writer. Apparently, she now realizes that too, because her later two series bring her skill of mystery writing to the forefront and put the romance angle as pleasant secondary plotlines. When Dreams Cross was a great mystery and only a fair romance (which is why I deducted one star), but worth reading by any Blackstock fan, any Christian who has ever questioned God's plan for the future, or anyone who has ever failed at romance and gun-shy to try again.

Book Description
Only her love could gentle his savage soul—
He was born to a clan of warriors of supernatural strength, but Gavrael McIllioch abandoned his name and his Highland castle, determined to escape the dark fate of his ancestors. Hiding his identity from the relentless rival clan that hunted him, he called himself Grimm to protect the people he cared for, vowing never to acknowledge his love for ravishing Jillian St. Clair. Yet even from afar he watched over her, and when her father sent an urgent summons, "Come for Jillian," he raced to her side—into a competition to win her hand in marriage.
Why had he run from her so many years before? And why return now to see her offered as a prize in her father's manipulative game? Furious, Jillian vowed never to wed. But Grimm was the man she loved, the one who urged her to marry another. He tried to pretend indifference as she tempted him, but he could not deny the fierce desires that compelled him to abduct her from the altar. She was the only woman who could tame the beast that raged within him—even as deadly enemies plotted to destroy them both....

Flying Kilts oh MY!!!.......2007-02-17
Tis a Scotland trip of love and saddness and more excitement than any Bray Wee Lass could handle.
Compelling and mythical romance.......2006-07-28
This is the second book in the Highlander series. It will definitely go in my special pile of keeper books to be re-read. Karen Marie Moning writes stories that cativate the reader and it is difficult to put the book down.
I enjoyed reading about Grimm, a berserker (this supernatural entity is explained in the book - I didn't know what it was before). He is tortured from his past and becomes a loner until he meets Jillian. She is his perfect soul mate and willing to help him accept who he is and who he can become. Great ending and delicious romance story!
Slow start - predictable ending.......2006-05-22
The story of Grimm and Jillian. Grimm we first meet in Beyond the Highland Mist, where he has a minor roll. Here we learn Grimm's story. Grimm is a Berserker, a race of legenday Scottish warriors. Not understanding what he is, and believing it will lead him to madness and possibly murder Grimm spends years running from himself and a clan, the McKanes, that has vowed to hunt and destroy the line of warriors. Enter Jillian, Grimm's true mate. He however is afraid he will bring her nothing but pain and death and pushes her away at every opportunity. The first half of the book is simply Grimm's struggle with accepting who he is and Jillian's love. I really feared this would be the whole book as it was somewhat boring and predictable. You know she will eventually win.
The book really didn't get interesting until about half way through. At this point, Grimm and Jillian ride off to face their real threat, the McKanes. After wasting half the book on the struggle between Jillian and Grimm, Moning glosses over the fight between the McKanes and the Berserkers. There are a number of questions left unanswered, several sections I felt could have been expanded on and the ending was a let down. Not that they don't win, but all you have is a Grimm saves Jillian, then they beat the McKanes, literally that is pretty much what she wrote. While I am not wanting bloody details, I would have like the climax to have been a little more climactic.
While this book is not directly related to the Dark Highlander's series, references to Adam Black are made. I do not know if Moning plans to tie the Berserkers into the final battle she seems to be building to in the Dark Highlander series, but it could be an interesting addition.
To tame a highland warrior.......2006-03-16
In this sequel to Beyond the highland mist, we follow Grimm. The tales of Berzerkers is novel and compelling. I look forward to another novel by Karen Marie Moning
Not her best,but still a treat.......2006-03-10
Of all the books that I have read by K. Moning this is the least exciting. I enjoy her dark and torn characters and the way they are brought to life with detail. This book did not seem to come to life for me. Overall, it is a great read but, not as edgy as her other books

Great Characters, Steamy Romance, & Magic.......2007-01-18
I just finished Beyond the Highland Mist. Wow! I almost gave it up at first with the fairy scenes and the hunky highlander (Hawk), but the book revs up with Adrienne's arrival. She adapts quite well to traveling back four centuries and being forced into marriage in Scotland in 1510.
The pair spar their way through a good part of the book, but finally get past that. Unfortunately the fairy interference keeps their romance from running smoothly. There are some steamy seduction scenes along the way and Adrienne gets yanked back and forth between centuries, but it all works out in the long run.
The second book takes Grimm as the hero. He was Hawk's best friend in Beyond the Highland Mist.

An enjoyable take on the genre.......2005-09-19
Like Joel Rosenberg, Jack L. Chalker's work belongs to the often-ignored subgenre of gritty fantasy, the kind in which good guys die, bad guys aren't always evil, and even heroes are, in the end, only human. While readers often decry high fantasy for being 'unrealistic', many of them are disappointed when they open a gritty book and discover that it has left them unsatisfied. Most of us, after all, are seeking escape from reality - we'd rather see heartwarming tales of victory against all the odds rather than read about our hero losing everything he holds dear.
If you're in this group, you might just like this early offering from Jack L. Chalker. Readers familiar with this author will notice the same trend, but it has not yet fully developed into grittiness. Instead, we are presented with a relatively quirky fantasy, using a storyline that always manages to sucker me in: someone from our world enters a fantasy world. (If you like that theme, I recommend 'In the Net of Dreams' by Wm. Mark Simmons)
Chalker's take on this theme is surprisingly original, with a world that was inadvertinely created as a reaction to God's creation of our own world. Leaving this secondary world to His angels to finish, this new world ended up with many loopholes in its natural laws - loopholes that can be exploited by people who know how: wizards and witches, in a nutshell. Over time, the most powerful formed councils to plug these loopholes - and ended up creating reams of new laws instead, like any bureaucracy, some of which tend towards the ridiculous. "All barbarians must be exotic, but be of no particular nationality." Each chapter is headed by one of these laws, which gently poke fun at the entire genre of fantasy - but are very much real in this world. Christianity plays a large role in 'River of the Dancing Gods', but don't mistake it for a religious book - there are several themes in it that might prove surprising.
As a childhood favorite, I picked up this book again in a used bookstore one afternoon when I had several hours to spare. It made for a pleasant way to while away the time, but as I read it again, I noticed more gratuitious titilation than I'd recalled from memory. The whole series seems torn between the adult (themes of life - divorce, custody of children, mortgages) and the gleeful adolescent (a world in which the Law requires beautiful women to be scantily clothed, and nymphs grow in power the more often they...er...well, you know). Fans of Piers Anthony's work will probably find it similar, if more realistic. However, I ended up feeling hesitant to recommend it to my wife. It's certainly not erotica, but it's got enough 'tease' in it that some people will be offended.
Like my experiences with Piers Anthony's novels, I found re-reading them to be less enjoyable the older I get - but they continue to be well-written books that fans will enjoy, especially if they happen to be young men. Luckily for fans new to the series, they are all commonly available in used bookstores, giving you plenty of new reading for a nice price.
May be my favorite Chalker........2005-04-10
River of the Dancing Gods is a quirky intelligent fantasy novel that manages to be a compelling read while holding up the entire genre for gentle parody.
Marge and Joe are not your typical fantasy heroes, but are probably all the better for not being typical. Marge is a down-at-the-heels 30-something waitress/housewife. Joe is a trucker who somehow lost the plot along the way. Together they meet a strange character called Ruddigore, and the adventure begins.
This was a re-read for me, and as I recall the rest of the series does not live up to the promise of this one. Still, a decent place to begin with Chalker. There is significantly less of the sniggering 12-year-old boy humor that can make Chalker so irritating at times. Should appeal to readers who like fantasy of the Xanth and Spellsinger variety.
Amusing fantasy.......2002-01-23
This is a lightweight but nevertheless entertaining fantasy novel. What makes this book stand out is Chalker's taking on the cliches of fantasy. If this wasn't clearly a parody, it would be nothing more than a routine novel. Certainly, the plot involving two "real world" individuals who must go to a fantasy land to save it is nothing original; it's how Chalker plays with the standard conventions that makes this an above average story.
There are flaws, admittedly. The characters are rather bland and often fit into the cliches that Chalker is trying to ridicule. Also, too much time is spent on the set-up (around 60% of the book) and too little time on the actual adventure (and the final battle is somewhat anticlimactic). However, if this viewed as only volume one in a larger four volume story, perhaps the setup isn't too long; after all, Tolkien took a couple hundred pages to get his fellowship moving.
This book is a fun, quick read. I recommend it especially to people familiar with fantasy as they'll understand the humor more readily.
A wonderful introduction to a whole new world.......1998-06-10
This was the first true series of medieval fantasy books I had ever read and it was fantastic. Jack Chalker starts us here in our own time and then spins us into another world with our heroes Joe and Marge, two loners who are picked up off a lonely road and brought to the new world, by the sorcerer Ruddygore.
Chalker does a great job with character development, allowing us to follow both Joe and Marge through their transformations into legends. He keeps the action moving along and even gives the readers some humor as well. Ruddygore's importance to the story is noted in almost every situation, since he seems to have affected everybody and everything around him.
What I like about this book (and the Dancing Gods series in general) is that Chalker shows us real imagination in every situation he throws his characters in. Joe the barabarian isn't your typical barbarian hero so it makes sense that he shouldn't be in typical situations. Joe's problems are recognizable to the reader which helps us get into the character, and yet only Joe could solve them. Marge isn't your average changeling magic-user either, although we don't follow her nearly as closely as we do Joe the barabarian.
Chalker's style of writing is also very easy to follow. It flows well and isn't cluttered with lots of words you would need a dictionary to look up. I'm not saying that his writing is simple, it isn't, but it's not written above the reader, either. It is a very enjoyable book and Chalker does us the favor of wrapping up the story as well. You can follow Joe and Marge in their next adventure or, if you don't like it, you can stop here and be content in finishing the book.

In today's era of high-technology medicine, Suzanne Gordon, editor of books such as Caregiving: Readings in Knowledge, Practice, Ethics, and Politics, brings us the story of three nurses who work to humanize the experience of receiving medical care. We meet Nancy Rumplik, an outpatient nurse in an ambulatory clinic, as she prevents a nearly fatal allergic reaction to a course of chemotherapy. We meet nurse practitioner Ellen Kitchen, who provides home care to an 88-year-old man who does not want surgery for his prostate cancer. And we meet Jeannie Chaisson, a medical clinical nurse specialist, whose work continues after her shift ends as she helps a husband and daughter come to terms with a loved one's desire to stop treatment and succumb to death. Through their accounts Gordon tells us much about the health care system and about the nursing attention that allows people to tolerate the painful treatments and difficult choices that accompany high-technology medicine.
While Life Support draws attention to the often invisible work of nurses, it also highlights their plight in a health care system that increasingly focuses on the bottom line. Gordon painstakingly makes the point that it is not just surgery, ventilators, and dialysis machines that offer life support in the health care system. She shows how these nurses create an environment in which high-technology medicine can thrive, but that is not devoid of human care and concern. We learn how experienced nurses teach their colleagues, smooth over insensitive treatment by doctors, tend to illness, and bring dignity to death when treatment no longer works--all of which are roles that could not necessarily be filled by lower-paid, less-experienced personnel. In chronicling the work of Rumplik, Kitchen, and Chaisson, Gordon brings a story of the soul of America's health care system. --Amy Sessler
Book Description
Health care systems often seem hobbled by rules and scrubbed clean of personality. Life Support displays their warmer, messier human side by trailing three outspoken nurses on their rounds. One works with cancer patients, another with homebound elderly, while a third mediates between patients and families, doctors and nurses. Between glimpses of large and small life dramas, author Suzanne Gordon (Prisoners of Men's Dreams) considers prejudice and ignorance about nursing. Does lack of ambition or intelligence bar nurses from medical school? Why is their care denigrated, while doctors are elevated? How will sweeping changes in health care affect them and, ultimately, us? Her responses are provocative and far-ranging.

Great Book.......2006-08-21
As a nursing student I loved this book. It gave a great perspective on some areas of nursing that nursing students may not be exposed to during clinicals. Toward the end of the book it did get into nursing/hospital politics and policy, which slowed things down. I wish that the author had ended with something better and more inspiring.
Powerful.......2005-08-03
It's often said that in today's society we have no heroes. If you read this book, you will soon learn otherwise.
Great Nursing Book- could do w/o political commentary.......2005-07-05
I really liked the aspects of this books that dealt with the three nurses performing their jobs in their perspective fields. That was great- but all the talk about nursing jobs getting cut really gets boring after a while. So much so I've been dreading reading the last chapter. Great book, just has some boring parts.
Summarizes nursing's role in the current health care arena........1998-05-09
A must read for all those working IN or WITH the profession of nursing. Gordon discusses how the changes in our health care system have affected both the nurses role and quality patient care issues. The essential need for collaboration of all health care personnel is woven throughout the content. I required this book for a senior nursing course I just taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and the students were most impressed with the book and its approach to nursing, medicine and health care. A must read for nurses, physicians, hospital administration, potential students and the general public. Afterall, we are all potential patients and we should be aware of what is happening to the largest population of health care providers, the nurses!
Essential reading for all health care consumers ........1997-10-03
The most under rated people in our society are nurses, this is an introduction to the ever present caregivers in healthcare today. The most varied role and most significant in all aspects of health care is the nurse. This was a wonderful read for all of those who may ever be the receiver of any aspect of their care from nurses in our country, basically everyone,a must have. For those considering the profession as a career, and the family members who would like an overview of "all in a days work", this will invoke serious thought.Yes, I am a nurse and for me to recommend a book written on nursing....kudos to all involved in the creation.

From the supplier: Suzanne Gordon's 'Life Support: Three Nurses on the Front Lines' is the first book to thoroughly explore how and why nursing practice is at a critical juncture. Restructuring medical services can make nurses angry and resentful because their work is being devalued. Patients and families need to know how health care is changing, and 'Life Support' helps articulate nurses' responses to radical change.
