Book Description

As England descends into civil war, John Tradescant the Younger, gardener to King Charles I, finds his loyalties in question, his status an ever-growing danger to his family. Fearing royal defeat and determined to avoid serving the rebels, John escapes to the royalist colony of Virginia, a land bursting with fertility that stirs his passion for botany. Only the native American peoples understand the forest, and John is drawn to their way of life just as they come into fatal conflict with the colonial settlers. Torn between his loyalty to his country and family and his love for a Powhatan girl who embodies the freedom he seeks, John has to find himself before he is prepared to choose his direction in the virgin land.

In this enthralling, freestanding sequel to Earthly Joys, Gregory combines a wealth of gardening knowledge with a haunting love story that spans two continents and two cultures, making Virgin Earth a tour de force of revolutionary politics and passionate characters.

3 out of 5 stars "Virgin Earth".......2007-09-30

This book is very long and at times tedious. Gregory has vivid descriptions of EVERYthing. Her characters were good. We reviewed this in book club and after discussion, I found out I remembered and enjoyed more than I realized!

2 out of 5 stars Annoying Main Character.......2007-09-28

I usually love Philippa Gregory's books. But this one, for me, was lacking. The main character was frankly annoying--from the beginning of the book to its VERY disappointing ending. I agree with another poster who had a hard time understand how three intelligent women could love this guy. The reason I gave it two stars (instead of one or none) was because the book did have its moments. The time spent in early Virgina and the look into the lives of King Charles I and the story behind the English civil war were interesting. I just wish the story could have been told from another main character's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Virgin Earth.......2007-09-05

I love the writings of Phillipa Gregory. Most of them are historic and based on true happenings. I find that she has researched her material well. I have read most of her writings. I only recently found out that she wrote a few children's books.

3 out of 5 stars 2ND GENERATIION GARDENER TO KINGS.......2007-08-15

NOT A VERY LIKEABLE CHARACTER BUT THE STORY IS AN INTERSTING PERSPECTIVE OF EARLY ENGLISH AND AMERICAN HISTORY FROM A GARDENER'S PERSPECTIVE.

3 out of 5 stars Philippa, what is happening?.......2007-07-26

Phillipa became one of my most sought after authors after reading the juicy and wnderful Other Boleyn Girl. Followed by Queen's Fool, I was hooked, chasing bookstores for her next delivery of her next book. Since then, I have read The Constant Princess, Virgin's Lover, Earthly Joys, Wise Woman, and Virgin Earth. All these are 3 stars at best.

The writing is no longer rich with descriptives. Plots become unbelievable and basic. There is no longer much historical reference in these, making them feel like 'supermarket novels'.

Very dissappointing, since after Anya Seton (Katherine may be the best England/Historical novel yet), she was my favorite historical writer.

It feels like her publisher is pushing her to cough up a new book every year and the writing feels strained and rushed. She needs to stop and smell the flowers and let the historical imagination flow again.

Dark Melody (The Carpathians (Dark) Series, Book 10)

I was given one of the later Dark Series books back in April of this year and got sucked in immediately -- no pun intended. I have enjoyed reading every book in the series but I must admit, some of the events in this one brought tears to my eyes. An awesome example of how loved ones will do anything for those they care about.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Melody.......2007-07-19

Dark Melody is love personified.

When Dayan, a carpathian and lead guitarist, finds his lifemate, he finds the worst kind of hell imaginable. She is dying and carrying a precious little girl who will not be born if Dayan can't get help.

Corinne knows she is dying and is afraid Dayan will fall in love with her and be hurt. On top of that, she and her sister-in-law are marked for death by a fanical group who think they are the dreaded vampire.

It is an all round great read.

I sat on the edge of my chair, not wanting to put the book down.

4 out of 5 stars Good but.......2007-06-17

This feehan book was good but most certnly not her best but it is still worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Read.......2007-04-23

Well I was just blown away by this book. I agree with another review that the love scenes can be a bit long and very similar so I tend to skip the pages but this story was a refreshing change. I also get quite attached to the characters so I get annoyed when the Prince is meant to be the strongest and then the next story states Georgi is the strongest and then Gabrielle, Lucian not to mention Darius is unrivalled. I have a soft spot for the Prince and the twins so protest everytime a male is stronger than them. This book wasn't about Dayan's ability as a hunter at all the story line was completely different. I also like that for a fleeting moment Corinne spoke to Lisa as girlfriends do and talked about the sex appeal of Dayan and how attractive he was prior to her actually meeting him. In most of the books the interaction by the female is soley with the male and you don't get the giggly girly convesations with their friends. If you are getting the feeling that the story lines have been similar and the character names are just changing from book to book I would highly recommend this one as a welcome change. I couldn't believe how quickly the time flew by and I was at the end before I knew it.

4 out of 5 stars Like it..........2007-04-05

It is a good book. It follows the series well, the plot stays with the ones that come before it.
The sex scenes are too drawn out, the story line is good though. I have become accustom to skipping the 3-4 page long sex and then starting to read again.
I'll continure to buy the dark series, just because I like the stories.

Book Description

Brutally ditched by her best friend, Kara feels totally abandoned until she discovers these dark blue days contain a life-changing secret.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book for all teens.......2007-05-09

Kara Hendricks and Jordan Ferguson have been best friends since kindergarten, but that all changes during sophomore year when Jordan becomes a cheerleader and dumps Kara for more popular friends. Feeling betrayed, all Kara can do is sulk, hoping Jordan will take her back, but after a few weeks Kara realizes that this will not be the case. Kara starts eating lunch with an outcast, a goody-two-shoe, and a goth, all who are art geeks, but still feels the pain of losing Jordan. Then, through this unlikely bunch, Kara is introduced to the one true friend who can fill the hole in her heart, God. Dark Blue: Color Me Lonely, by Melody Carlson, was an awesome book that I would recommend to all Christian teen girls.
This wonderful page turner was enticing and a fast read. Because it was filled with so much drama, this book was never boring. Also, this book is made up of many short chapters, so each chapter leaves the reader at a place where they just can't stop reading. For example, towards the middle of the book, a chapter ends with Kara running into her room, sobbing, and wishing everything could just end. The beginning of the next chapter explains why she was crying in order to keep the reader hooked.
Reading this book taught me a lot about my relationships with other people, as well as my relationship with God. I have learned to value my friendships more and make the most of everyday. Also, although Kara, the main character, only represents one way to live for Christ, I think she sets a good example. From her, I realized that I should pray all the time, not only when something's wrong. I think anyone who reads this book could learn something about relationships or God.
I found the characters in this book easy to relate with. I think anyone who has lost a friend or felt lonely or betrayed can relate to Kara. Others, who have lost parents, may be able to relate to another character named Edgar. There are other characters too who have assorted issues, so no matter who the reader is, he or she will be able to relate to some character in someway. I think this make the book more meaningful, enjoyable, and interesting.
Dark Blue, by Melody Carlson, is a five star book filled with life lessons. Also, it is a fast read and easy to relate to. Dark Blue is the first book in the Truecolor series, which now has eleven books. Each book in the series is about a different girl and touches on a different issue faced by teens today. I recommend that any teen girl read Dark Blue, as well as the other Truecolor books to learn how to deal with any problems they might have.

2 out of 5 stars Dark Blue? Color me apathetic...........2007-04-06

In this tepid novel two teen girls, Kara and Jordan, go from best friends to opposite ends of the pecking order at their high school. We get to hear Kara's side of the story as she drones on and on about how she has no life, no friends, no personality, etc. The book consists of an inordinate about of filler consisting of such sentences as "I took my shower. Then I brushed my teeth. Then I ate a sandwich. I thought about how great my life used to be when I had Jordan. But now she's popular. Then I watched T.V. Then I...." Unfortunately, I am not exaggerating. The many times Kara mentioned that she might as well jump off a bridge or get hit by a bus, I wanted to tell her to go for it. Never, in all the hundreds of books I've read, have I met a character who I so desperately could not bring myself to care about even one iota.

The author, Melody Carlson, tried early on to connect with the teens presumably reading this book by using words like "crap" and "lesbian" and other such utterances that are sure to make your fine Christian parents gasp. I think this was her idea: Use borderline words and concepts such as these at first to draw the kids in and make them think they're reading something "cool" and "exciting" and "edgy."

Unlike some of the other reviewers who spoke badly about this book because of its Christian aspect, that is not where I find fault. The problems with this book are as follows: average writing, atrocious character development (see above), and a terrible plot execution.

Let me explain about the plot. It was a good idea. It is a plot that nearly 100 percent of teen girls have experienced first hand at some point in their lives. But Kara was such a bloody boring character that by the time she developed half a personality, I didn't care. I spent the first half of the book wanting to smack her upside the head, and the other half rolling my eyes at how absurd the climax and conclusion were.

Kara of course, in pure Christian fashion, discovers that Jesus Christ is her one true best friend and her life turns around. She starts eating better, exercising regularly, going to church, standing up for herself, being friendly, having a personality and having self-confidence. Oh, and of course all of a sudden her now popular former best friend wants to be friends again. Hurrah! And this all happens in the course of a week.

Now, I'm not saying God can't do all of that. Because I know from personal experience He can. My problem lies in the fact that the book seemed to imply that every single aspect in your life will improve IMMEDIATELY if you just say the magic words "Jesus I want you in my life." I'm sorry, maybe it works that way for some people. But for those poor teen girls reading this book and expecting some miraculous life altering experience to happen overnight for them just like it did for Kara, they are in for a rude awakening.

2 out of 5 stars ...Color me bored.......2007-03-31

This book is not exactly my favorite book. I got this book from my twenty-year-old super christian sister. Now, hold on! I've got nothing against religion but this book is too religion-ish (not even a word). Actually I love religion but this book seems too corny and sappy. This COULD be a book that you'd enjoy but if you're like me and aren't into that stuff then you may not want to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Great Book.......2007-03-02

I read a book called Dark Blue: from the True Color series. It starts with a girl named Kara. Her best friend named Jordan joins the cheer team and doesn't hang out with Kara. Kara feels so lonely. Kids from her art class invite her to have lunch with them in the art room. She makes a bond with them and Jesus. At the end, Jesus becomes her best friend.

I liked how Jesus becomes Kara's best friend. I also liked it when Kara defended her friend when some cheer leaders were being mean to Kara's friend. Some of the cheer leaders were Jordan's friends. I liked the part when Kara was telling Jordan she was best friends with Jesus, but Jordan didn't care. Kara was really strong when Jordan left her.

I thought it was a really good book. It was more of a Christian book. The other True color books are Christian books. If you like books about God and Jesus,I think you should read this book.

2 out of 5 stars Dark Blue: Color Me Lonely.......2006-10-17

This book is about a girl named Kara, a somphmore in high school, who has just lost her best friend since kindergarten to the "popular" crowd. Devastated and lonely, Kara lets herself go almost completely, hardly talking and crying everyday after school. But then she is invited to stay in at lunch with three students in her art class, Amy, Edgar and Felicia. Although they aren't what Kara would have looked for in friends in the beginning, she actually starts becoming close with Edgar when he introduces her to faith. Kara lets God into her heart and finds she has a new best friend.

I found this book to be quite depressing throughout the first half, and almost unbearable through the second. Seeing as this was my first Melody Carlson book, I had no clue how faith-filled and religous her books were. After reading this first one, I'm not so sure if I'm going to be so willing to read the rest of the True Colors series. I am not a true Christian, and though I don't mind a little religous spirit every once in a while from friends and family, this book was just too jam-packed with it for me. Having been through a similar situation as Kara's, I thought I'd enjoy the book because I would understand her feelings, but I was quite disappointed. The book was repetitive (there was just too much of Kara's moping in the beginning and too much of her "I am so glad I've let God into my heart" towards the end) and preachy, which I did not enjoy in the least.

However, if you'd like to read about a teenage girl going through the motions, and don't mind a lot of religous talk, I'd reccomend it. If you are like me, though, I wouldn't.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating characters!.......2005-08-06

Melody Taylor really knows how to draw you into her story. The people really seem real, even if they are mostly vampires. This isn't concerned with drinking blood as much as it is about the characters, you will really feel for them.

The main character, Ian, is a four year old vampire. Before she became a vampire she was a young woman trying to get over a failed love affair. Now her best friend, Kent, the one who made her into a vampire has been murdered and she realizes just how little she knows about being a vampire. She also discovers that the person, or persons, who killed Kent want to kill her too.

Lucky for her she meets another vampire as she is running from the murder scene who offers to help her.

You will enjoy this vampire murder mystery!

5 out of 5 stars A Masonic Book For The Contemplative Mason!.......2007-06-15

This is a great book for the Analytical Masonic Student. Written in a rather technical stlye, it conveys the thought processes the author used to arrive at his conclusions and invites the reader to develop his own along similar or more challenging lines. Subjects include Masonic Travel, Symbolism, Masonic History, Religious Concepts, Biblical truth and lies, Early Church History, King Solomon's True Name, The nature and purpose of Solomon's Temple, etc... Very encompassing in subject matter and well researched, it is purposely written to challenge preconceived notions about Freemasonry held by Masons and Non-Masons alike. A very good read!

When you pick up a book by author Peter Lourie, you'll realize two things right away. First, he loves history, and his love for the subject comes through in his writing. Secondly, Mr. Lourie doesn't just write about the past. He's a hands-on type of person, and that's clearly evident in HIDDEN WORLD OF THE AZTEC.

In 1512, the two-hundred year history of the Aztecs was brought to a close when Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes captured the capital city of Tenochtitlan. That ancient city, the hub of the Aztec culture, now lies buried beneath a larger, much more modern city--that of downtown Mexico City.

Mr. Lourie followed a team of archaeologists, led by Leonardo Lopez Lujan, as they conducted new excavations at both the Great Temple and the Pyramid of the Moon. The work done at the Great Temple was the first attempted in seven years. At the more ancient Pyramid of the Moon, located thirty miles north of Mexico City, a new opening was made at the top of the pyramid, and Mr. Lourie followed a team down into never-before explored tunnels.

HIDDEN WORLD OF THE AZTEC is filled with beautiful full-color photographs, maps of the ancient Aztec world, and photos of actual archaeological finds discovered during their time in Mexico City. This first-hand account of what the ancient Aztec culture was like is not to be missed, especially by those with a love of history.

I love Peter Lourie's books because they help students see that real adventure is still taking place in a real world. He visited my daughter's school a year ago. I sat in and was blown away by his passion and enthusiasm and his love for history and travel and adventure. He brings that passion to his new title, Aztec. We follow Lourie into the heart of an ancient temple at Teotihuacan, the Pyramid of the Moon. With the same archaeologist from Mexico, Leonardo Lujan, we accompany scientists opening up a new excavation at the Great Temple, the center of the Aztec capital city, which now lies under Mexico City. Fascinating stuff. And not, I might add, without a lively and informative discussion of the significance of human sacrifice to that ancient culture.

The photographs bring the subject alive and will make the Aztecs really accessible to middle graders. Our school has Lourie's other books, Maya, Inca, and Anasazi in their library. Lourie has hit a home run with this new one, the best in his New World Civilization series. I hardily recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars An splendid description of emmense temple structure.......2004-05-20

The author of the temple scroll transcribed text in the first person, as if, he was the teacher of righteousness dictating the details of the temple architectural. The author speaks as the Lord in the first person replacing "I" for "Lord", a seemly new Mose. The temple scroll appears very authorative on the surface because of the first person tense.

The author's description of the architectural types and dimensions found in the temple scroll neither match the Solomon temple architecture pattern nor the Ezekiel temple dimensions descriptions. Some scholars think the temple must be describing the temple of new jerusalem to be built during the Millenium. One interesting fact about the dimensions is if build to scale parts of the Kidron valley would need too be filled with millions of tons of rumble extending the range for the outer court because the property where the temple and court would reside overlap the terrain of Jerusalem, significantly. Its very doubtful the architecture could have ever been implemented in the past, in Israel.

Unique to the temple architecture are three courts: a inner court, a middle court, and a outer court. The author describe strict laws many punishable by death for trespassing. For example, a priest can not leave the inner court dressed in his priestly garments nor can a woman enter the middle court. The inner court is 120 cubits from the innermost portion of the temple, the wall length is 100 cubits; the middle court wall length is 408 cubits; and the outer court is 500 cubits away and 1000 cubits in length. The inner court has a gate on each wall; the middle court has three gates on each wall names after the 12 tribes of Israel; and the outer court has four gates per wall. The cubit width between between the gates on the outer wall is 360 cubits and each middle court gate.

An outer court gate is forty cubit deep, 28 cubits wide, and 70 cubit high. The gate would make the person entering feel extremely insignificant and the an atmosphere of splendor prominent; also, onlooker could view incomers from three level lookouts.

On the northeast side of the temple was a staircase structure with a square column running up the center with stair case winding around to the top. The Romans built similar square column watch towers. At the top is a bridge extended from the staircase house too the top of the temple. It is thought the priest study astronomy from the top of the temple and used the roof lookout to examine different constellations; while a more useful reason is one of utility, since only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, it was necessary for the other priests too clean the holy room from the top of the temple.

A brass laver house provided a basin for washing the garments of the priest. The water was consider holy and penalities for touching the water were in force. The water was drained onto the ground through conduit leading too a deep pit. The washing and draining of the water were closely guard against offense.

The architectures were : a slaughter house, stair house, laver house, utensil house, alter, cooking area, sitting area, and the temple. The temple had two chambers. These array of architecture seems grandeur than the architecture of Solomon.

The author describes the day of atonement requiring two bulls, 7 male lambs, 2 male goats. One bull of the priest and family and the other for the people. A lot cast to determine the scapegoat. This is consistent with my understanding of the day of atonement. The high priest entered in to the Holy of Holies and sprinkled on the seat and foot of the ark. The author seems accurate in this instance. The usage of the numbers 7 and 12 are consistent.

The Festival of First Fruits was also described in detail. The temple brought people constantly near too celebrate various festivals. The festival of the first fruits being one of the most important according to the details of the author.

Lets look at some facts. The fact Solomon's temple was not built too exact specifications described by the temple scroll means nothing. The Lord accepted Solomon's architecture. Solomon offerred 10,000 bulls and the spirit of the Lord filled the house as a cloud. The people could both see the power of God and feel his presence. They could not see his face. Solomon dedicated the house of the Lord to the Lord of Holiness. The Ark and covenant were placed in the temple.

Living with this disease is painful. This book gave me more insight than I had before. Each chapter was helpful.

I've done a lot of research on Endo, and this book condensed it to make it easier for one to understand it easier. It helped mentally and physically.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough to "cope" if disease is severe and chronic.......2005-03-20

I was diagnosed with endometriosis over 10 years ago and have since had 7 major surgeries and countless minor ones. I picked this book up after major surgery #5, desperate for help. This book didn't cut it. Granted, by the time I read this book, my knowledge of endo (from medical and general literature) was better than most gyns (by their own admissions). I bought this book anyway, hoping the "coping" advice would be helpful. I ended up skimming it, finding little of value, and setting it on a bookshelf to gather dust.

Endometriosis left me permanently disabled and in chronic pain, despite "the best" care available at one of the top medical establishments in the world. With especially severe stage IV disease, that sometimes happens despite the type(s) of surgery and treatments tried. I eventually went beyond the endometriosis literature and found what I was looking for in general literature on chronic illness. If that's where you're at, I highly recommend "Celebrate Life: New Attitudes for Living with Chronic Illness," Hartwell's "Chronically Happy: Joyful Living in Spite of Chronic Illness," Wells, "A Delicate Balance: Living Successfully with Chronic Illness, and Cheri Register, "The Chronic Illness Experience: Embracing the Imperfect Life."

These books helped immensely. I learned to live with somewhat of a pardox: acceptance of my condition (as opposed to continuing to fight it) without ever giving up hope of a better future. And, I learned how to make the most out of my life and find value in what I could do, instead of focusing on what I couldn't do. These books helped me grieve my losses and move forward. If you're where I was, I hope this review helps you find these books sooner than I did!

I was diagnosed with Endometriosis in 2001 & had my first surgery that year. Toward the latter part of 2002, I started to be in chronic pain for this disease. I'll make a long story short. (If you want to see the long story, go to my review about Jennifer Lewis' book that I think is medically inaccurate). This book is compelling, thorough and most of all, helpful. It was a book I *SHOULD* have had in 2001. Since dealing with my pain, this book has opened my eyes to therapies I can use, how I can deal with ALL the aspects of this disease, and how it affects my loved ones. This is a great book because it talks to you through a whole person concept--- not just dealing with the reproductive Endometriosis, but it deals with all of the areas surrounding it, too, like emotions, finances, and so on. It doesn't talk down to you, and won't make you feel like you're in a pity party, but gives you tools to try to cope and even recover. Check this book out. You'll be glad you did.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis when I was 15. At this age I did not even come close to understanding what this disease was, or how it was going to effect my future. After reading this book, not only did I understand the health aspect of this disease, but I also learned how to cope with the emotional part of it as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to understand this disease.

After being diagnosed and in denial for awhile about the disease, this was the 3rd book i began reading to help myself understand my body and what was happening to it. This book put a lot of things into perspective and began to shed some light on the disease and what I needed to do get control of it. This is the book that my friends need to read so that they can also understand what I am going thru.
