"I had been making the rounds of the Sacrifice Poles the day we heard my brother had escaped. I already knew something was going to happen; the Factory told me."
Those lines begin one of the most infamous of contemporary Scottish novels. The narrator, Frank Cauldhame, is a weird teenager who lives on a tiny island connected to mainland Scotland by a bridge. He maintains grisly Sacrifice Poles to serve as his early warning system and deterrent against anyone who might invade his territory.
Few novelists have ever burst onto the literary scene with as much controversy as Iain Banks in 1984. The Wasp Factory was reviled by many reviewers on account of its violence and sadism, but applauded by others as a new and Scottish voice--that is, a departure from the English literary tradition. The controversy is a bit puzzling in retrospect, because there is little to object to in this novel, if you're familiar with genre horror.
The Wasp Factory is distinguished by an authentically felt and deftly written first-person style, delicious dark humor, a sense of the surreal, and a serious examination of the psyche of a childhood psychopath. Most readers will find that they sympathize with and even like Frank, despite his three murders (each of which is hilarious in an Edward Gorey fashion). It's a classic of contemporary horror. --Fiona Webster
Book Description
Meet Frank Cauldhame. Just sixteen, and unconventional to say the least:
Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different and more fundamental reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim.
That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again.
It was just a stage I was going through.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping story of teenage angst, cruelty, and self-delusion.......2007-06-23
"The Wasp Factory" is a story self-narrated by Frank, an angry and confused teenager who only finds solace through elaborate rituals involving cruelty to animals.
Frank's story takes us through several days of his life where he wanders the island he lives on and the town he lives by. As an indifferent aside, he also tells us, in dark, cold, and unsettling humorous detail, the three murders he has committed--some of them family members. If you are in the mood for a dark psychological study narrated by a unreliable sociopath, then this is the book for you.
Banks creates a very dark and twisted world with this book. His attention to detail when he describes Frank's inner thoughts is flawless. With ease he describes the quick, sometimes random, feelings that we all have and that we all forget. He also describes Frank's cruel rituals in fascinating specifics.
Unfortunately, I give it four stars only because the ending was a bit over the top and, IMHO, it didn't fit well into the main vein of the story.
An unlikeable main character.......2007-05-01
I think that this is another book that you either love or hate. I loved it, it has a very black humour throughout the book, and there are some disturbing aspects to our main character.
I have leant this book to a few people, and of these, a couple have loved it, one absolutely hated it.
It is true that it is hard to empathise with a main character that is violent and malicious, but in this respect, this book reminds me a little of A Clockwork Orange only in as much that the main character in this book has no redeeming qualities either.
If you like twists, this one has a good one at the end.
You are cooking them, aren't you ?.......2007-05-01
Iain Banks was born in Scotland in 1954 and published his first book - "The Wasp Factory" - in 1984. In the years since, he's won critical acclaim, topped best-seller lists and has even written Science Fiction books under the cunning nom-de-plume 'Iain M. Banks'.
Frank Cauldhame is sixteen years old and hasn't quite had what you'd call a typical upbringing. In fact, he doesn't officially exist : Frank was never registered, has no birth certificate, no passport and no national insurance number. The upside is that, as a result, he's never had to attend school - though he was educated at home by his father. (Angus, Frank's father, did occasionally embellish parts of the curriculum - for example, Frank believed for a time that there was a character called Fellatio in "Hamlet"). Angus is a scientist : the discipline is never clearly identified, though he does appear to be involved in the biomedical sector. These connections have also apparently allowed Angus to provide for Frank's medical needs - despite his son's official non-existence. (These needs were increased at an early age, following a devastating encounter with a dog). Angus' study is strictly off-limits to Frank and is permanently locked - though Frank is determined to make it inside someday.
The pair are pretty comfortable, whatever it is Angus does for a living. They live on a small island, just off the coast of Portneil in Scotland. Frank never knew his mother, Angus' second wife, as she left shortly after he was born. (Apparently, she didn't care much for children). It's probably lucky for her that she didn't stick around : Frank has turned into a very strange kid whose values and beliefs don't really overlap with those held by 'normal' society. He's very fond of general destruction and killing - so far, he's dispatched two cousins, one brother and various animals. (He's yet to be caught out). He is also very inventive and has essentially created his own belief system - involving a Wasp Factory, some Sacrifice Poles and the Bunker (a pillbox on the beach, a relic from the Second World War). He also has his own name for various parts of the island, depending on what he's done there - for example, the Snake Park, Black Destroyer Hill and the Bomb Circle.
The events of "The Wasp Factory" take place over a couple of days - beginning with the news that Eric, Frank's half-brother, has escaped form hospital. (Eric was committed several years earlier, for setting dogs on fire). The book sees Frank looking back over his life, in the build-up to Eric's expected return. This isn't something that causes Frank any great amount of stress, despite the fact that Eric clearly still isn't firing on all thrusters. (Frank's is more than a match for his brother : the worrying this is that he sees himself as being the "somebody sane who still likes" Eric.) Unsurprisingly, the book can be a little gruesome at times and it isn't one I'd recommend if you're feeling a little queasy. However, if you're feeling up to a challenge, it's certainly well worth reading !
If only it had a different ending.......2006-12-18
I would have given this book 4 stars if it had an ending that wasn't absolutly terrible and ruined every page that came before it.
Brilliant Book.......2006-09-08
A friend suggested this book to me, so I decided to give it a try. I found it compelling plot and liked the twist at the end. Iain Banks knows how to write excellent characters that you can sympathize with, even though the character is murderer. This is one of the best books I've read in recent years. I highly recommend it.

Good book!.......2007-08-02
I was surprised to see the negative reviews of the book!
I thought it was a great read, definitely a keeper. I liked how Clarice is a strong, independent woman and Jack doesn't want to change that about her. I think the book had the right amount of romance, the right amount of intrigue...and a hint of this elusive Dalziel, who I can't wait to learn more about.
Stephanie Laurens, as always, delivered!
A Fine Read!.......2007-04-09
This novel is a part of Stephanie Laurens' Bastion Club series. I have not been able to read the other titles, but this one is a stellar read - well worth the time, effort, and expense.
Jack Warnefleet - Baron Warnefleet - is a semi-retired military spy. He is returning home to Avening Manor after an extended absence of seven years - thirteen total. He had decided to be married, and was seeking a wife in Town. He was hunted by the matrons and their daughters until he decided to never marry and exercise succession upon a distant relative.
Clarice Altwood - Lady Clarice - is twenty-nine years old, and lives with her cousin, Sir James Altwood, in Avening proper. She was sent there after being banished by her father for refusing to marry a bad man just under seven years from the start of the story.
This is an incredible story of love and passion. Clarice is a strong, intelligent woman. Jack is such a strong and intelligent man that he glories in her strengths (after being a bit miffed at the same), and allows her to be who she is.
As originally noted, this book is well worth your time, effort, and money to read. It is on my to-be-kept list, and ever will be. I never tire of re-reading this story, and hope you enjoy it as much as I.
Jack and Clarice-SPOILERS.......2007-03-07
Favorite scene with Clarice-
Telling off her ex by letting him have it in the balls. Classic. She sure knows how to take care of herself, despite the fact that she needs, and wants, a little help from Jack.
Favorite scene with Jack-
Trying to discover the identity of a certain man, first at the tavern, and then with urchins. This scene made me think that Jack wanted kids after this. He was so wonderful with the urchins. Jack is a people person. Always calm and gentle, never demanding. He got what he wanted out of them because of this.
Together-
Finally confessing their love for each other, both wanting each other and kids and to return to the countryside.
What did you like about Clarice-
Her strength, her stubborness, her bossiness. Changing. She was so stuck in her ways, but then changed for the better because of Jack. Everyone, almost everyone, loved her, and wanted and needed her help. She would do anything for anyone, especially her family. She never put herself first. Allowing, and wanting, Jack to save her. I love how she tries, even does so, puts the fear of God into people. She doesn't let gossip get to her. She holds her head up high and knows how to put people in their place without resorting to threats.
What didn't you like about Clarice-
There wasn't anything I didn't like about Clarice.
What did you like about Jack-
This was one tough warrior dude. It was so funny that the only thing that he was afraid of was matchmaking mamas and their daughters. Although he vowed never to marry and have kids, he wanted to marry Clarice and have kids with her. I love how at first, he was jealous that everyone wanted Clarice's help, and not his.
What didn't you like about Jack-
There wasn't anything I didn't like about Jack. Well, one thing, but it's not a dislike. It's more that he didn't want to marry and have kids. Although I'm a loner, and like being single right now, I do want to get married and have kids. I don't want to be alone the rest of my life.
Casting Jack, I'd cast Hugh Jackman.
Casting Clarice, I'd cast Kate Winslet.
Just Delightful!.......2007-01-09
Oh this book was wonderful! My favorite so far. I particularly liked the hero - a gentleman of tremendous wisdom and integrity who has given up finding a suitable bride and gladly retires to his beloved home in the country. There he encounters a "warrior-queen" who ends up being the perfect match for him. He decides to win her by treating her as an equal and lending her unfailing support, even though that means curbing his natural dominance. What unfolds is a wonderful love story between two independent and mature people - two people who refuse to be manipulated by society's rules.
It was so good I read it twice.
A Fine Passion.......2006-09-22
This had been my first of the Bastion Club, and I'm hooked. The characters are smart, witty, sexy and the story is very engrossing. I just ordered the others in the series!

Kitchen Passion.......2000-05-16
This book was a delight. It nearly read like a novel and I couldn't put it down. I like referring to it prior to cooking for the inspiration and the reminder to approach my cooking in the right frame of mind. No matter what I prepare, the flavors are so much more intense and complex when I am consciously cooking with a open, giving heart. Cooking should be a heartfelt gift and a way to nurture the ones we love. This book shows you how to cook with passion. Wait until you taste the difference!

world class, NY chessplayer, Reshevsky rival, quit in his 20's, gave up world title chance due to Soviet cheating.......2005-09-03
Yes, before Fischer, Reuben Fine in 1948 gave up chess claiming Soviet match fixing (more truthful he had to make a living --even Reshevsky worked full-time as a CPA). In the 1930's Fine left NY for the European chess circut and was reckoned to be world number 1 or 2 in 1940. His book is a pleasure to read; 50 annotated games against world class GM's and solid masters. The notes are easy to follow (except they are in descriptive). Every game starts with a well written description of the opponent/the tournament/life on the chess circut/background stuff. Game notes are adequate, in the style of the era.
Fine was considered to be a technician - skilled at highly accurate play, a good eye for opponents weaknesses an efficient ability to hold a long-term positional intiative, adept at king attacks, an endgame specialist (he wrote Basic Chess Endings - the all-time endgame encyclopedic classic over one summer!) knowledgable openings (he wrote Modern Chess Openings over another summer!!) and a good calculater of variations. Given the chance (meaning no WWII) he might have become world champion. My only complaint about this book is that it was written 10 years after his retirement and the notes to this book do not have the depth found in Great Moments in Modern Chess (his best book - where he really gets into detail how players think during the game, opening theory, deep analysis from 1848).
Lessons from My Games is one of the best chess biographies, the game collection is good (excellent price) and a good study book for learning technique if you are 1600 or above.
They played chess before 1985!.......2004-01-28
This collection of 50 of Reuben Fine's games was among the earliest ones that I read. It is also among the few titles that I have read from cover to cover.
For those who don't know, Fine was one of the world's best in his day and a serious championship contender. His record includes a tie for 3rd at Nottingham 1936 and for first at Avro 1938. He has wins against many of the greats.
Fine's annotations are the type that I prefer; no long paragraphs of dense variations. Instead, he nicely mixes moves and text to illustrate his points. As well, each game is introduced by a short anecdote or a description of the circumstances. It adds a human touch missing from many other best game collections.
Along with battles featuring his American contemparies, Fine also shows his talents versus the likes of Alekhine, Capablance, Flohr, Botvinnik and Lasker.
I would heartily recommend this book for players rated from 1200 to 2000.

Book Description
'The romantic and even bizarre circumstances surrounding the appropriation of the Elgin Marbles, down to the unfortunate fates of the principal actors, are thoroughly and fascinatingly set forth by Theodore Vrettos in this melancholy saga of imperial connoisseurship, a tale that belies the end result:the beautiful room in the British Museum.' -John Updike'The Elgin Affair is a vividly told story of greed, deceit, cunning, thievery, obsession, and astonishing cultural arrogance.Theodore Vrettos deserves great credit for this meticulous and dramatic historical reconstruction. It is a book we should all read.' -Tim O'Brien Author of The Things They CarriedA New York Times Notable Book of 1998.
Customer Reviews:
Vrettos sheds light on an interesting topic.......1998-07-21
It is obvious from even a cursory read of this book that Theodore Vrettos did an incredible amount of research. Fortunately for the reader, the story does not suffer from overindulgence in mere historical fact, as there are plenty of extremely personal anecdotes which keep the story moving at an even pace.
It is amazing that Elgin (barely) made it through this escapade alive, and more so that he didn't make a dime from "acquiring" antiquities from ancient cultures which, in his opinion, could neither appreciate nor adequately tend to these treasures. That the battle to possess the marbles continues to this day is testament to the passions of the people involved.
My one complaint with the book as a whole was the last chapter, entitled "The Trial." Don't let it fool you, Elgin wasn't brought to trial for theft, as he should have been. The trial in question is that of his wife's lover, on trial for adultery. I found the inclusion of this rather! lengthy chapter not pertinent to the story of the marbles; it would've ended the book just as well to merely point out the financial losses Elgin suffered without the detail of the trial. Otherwise, this is well written and an educational read.
An amazing story of greed, lust and devine retribution........1998-06-13
This historically accurate book does not need any pondering of motives, but the facts themselves are so bizarre and amazing, you are free to draw your own conclusion. Imagine being a nemesis of Napolean Bonaparte. Even though the gods deigned to punish Elgin from day one, he was single-minded in his pursuit to obtain the equities he alone decided should be taken from their origins. Enjoy the ride of greed, lust and devine retribution. It's thought provoking and certainly envokes a passionate response.

A tour de force, even better than his first!.......2004-11-03
In the first book in the Dark Angel Chronicles, Brian K. Stoner introduced us to his marvelous world and the people who inhabit it. This is a world of magic and beauty besieged by dark forces: A horde of Daemons lead by great and terrible Daemon Lords threatens consume the world. The other races of this world are slowly joining together to defend the great stronghold that has held the Daemons at bay for long centuries, but will their power be enough, or will it be too little and too late?
Their greatest champion, the Serian of Music, the last surviving representative of the nine mysterious beings that created this world, is mired by his own inner turmoil, and held back from despair and death only by a promise made to his long-dead love. He holds the key to an absolute victory, but cannot bear to use it for fear of betraying the memory of his beloved.
Serana, the last Sorceress (by all accounts a prodigy even for that mystic race) and a motley group of elementals and guardsman have been sent on a desperate mission to find the ancient Armor of the Elements, a magical weapon of enormous power created in ancient times by the elemental races, which might be enough to tip the balance of power in the fight against the Daemons in their direction. Unfortunately, a wildcard appears in the mysterious and paradoxical Lady Firehair, for she possesses the power to decide the failure or success of the quest, and perhaps the war itself, all depending on where she lends her support.
Mr. Stoner tells the story with a deft hand and attention to detail, and his writing skills have only increased since the publication of his first book. This is a magnificent story full of action and beauty, unexpected plot twists and unforeseen romance. Mr. Stoner seems to have a limitless imagination for creating characters that are likeable and realistic. This book kept me turning pages late into the night (several of them, in fact), and a truly mind-bending cliffhanger ending left me waiting eagerly for the next book in the series.
