A lavish summer wedding is being planned at Bitter Creek ranch. In one month, Clay Blackthorne will wed socialite Jocelyn Montrose. But when she hears stirrings of a corporate takeover by the family's archrival, North Grayhawk, Jocelyn covertly heads to North's ranch to offer a valuable commodity -- herself -- if North will call off his plans. Striking a deal to spend the summer with the steely, seductive North, Jocelyn fails to see that her sacrifice to protect the man she loves may have dire consequences.

Stunned by his fiancee's rejection, Clay, a newly appointed federal judge, begins presiding over an incendiary terrorism trial, which brings him face to face with his first love, Libby Grayhawk. As tensions mount, forces beyond Clay's control threaten the women most precious to him in the past and the present. And only in a daring act of sacrifice will he know which woman will become the next Mrs. Blackthorne.

3 out of 5 stars 6th In The BitterCreek Series...A Blackthorne/Grayhawk Story.......2007-01-13

"The Next Mrs. Blackthorne" by Joan Johnston" is 6th in the Bittercreek series. It follows:The Cowboy - The Texan - The Loner - The Price - and The Rivals. This series is modern day romance/western adventures that revolve around feuding families. The Blackthornes, The Creeds(descendants of the "Sisters of the Lone Star" Trilogy) and most recently The Grayhawks, who in this series were introduced in "The Rivals". The Blackthornes and Creeds had pretty much laid their feud to rest, but the Blackthornes and Grayhawks have another long standing hatred for each other, which escalated 20 years earlier by the affair of son Clay Blacthorne and daughter Libby Grayhawk, which produced grandaughter Kate, who being a Blackthorne-Grayhawk is caught in the middle.

So in the last book "The Rivals", teenaged Kate had been kidnapped and Libby and Clay had to work together to save their daughter. You knew that sparks still flew between them and hoped someday they would put aside their differences and marry and bring together these two feuding families. But alas, Clay is engaged to another and neither admit their true feelings. Now in "The Next Mrs. Blackthorne", Kate is once again in serious trouble as a result of trying to trick her parents into reuniting. She announces her engagement to an older mysterious fellow who's reputation is not exactly pristine, in hopes her parents will unite in order to stop the relationship. Clay now a federal Judge, is trying a high-profile case of a "bomber" and Kate has also befriended the son of the defendant. Now she has turned up missing and the hunt for Kate, her kidnapper and a bomb makes for an exciting and suspenseful adventure.

I enjoyed the mystery/adventure aspect of the story and found that quite intriguing, and also following the family saga, but the rest didn't seem up to par with the earlier romance stories. Libby who we want all the time to be The Next Mrs. Blackthorne, and make some of those sparks fly with Clay, doesn't even enter the picture until chapter 6 about 125 pages in. Clay's fiance, Jocelyn and Libby's brother North, are the focus at first, and although their story eventually becomes pretty hot(romantically speaking), it begins with an unrealistic ploy by Jocelyn as she offers her body to North, in exchange for some property the Blackthornes do not want to lose to him. Also, Kate, now a college student seems as mischievous and naive as a grade school girl, especially taking into consideration the life-threatening situation she had already had in the last story.

This is also the one book in this series, that I would say does not stand on it's own. You really need to read, at least "The Rivals" to get a full understanding of the characters. If you have already been following this series, you probably want to read it for the adventure and to catch up with the families. At the end of the book, Ms Johnston lets you know that the next story will continue to tell Kate's story(but doesn't give the title, so I am not sure if it is even out yet). I am hoping the "older/mysterious" guy(Jack) she pretended to love, will be back in the next story. He was the most interesting character in the story.

All in all, a good story to take you away for a while, just not quite up their with some of the others in the series. Enjoy the read....Laurie

2 out of 5 stars Silly and boring........2005-11-10

I read the other reviews and felt kind of bad giving this book only 2 stars but I just didn't think it was very good. I found the characters to be shallow and uninteresting, the dialogue choppy and boring. The only reason I kept reading it was to see if Jack and Kate would wind up together but apparently this book is one in a series and this was not their story. I first rolled my eyes when Joss left Clay's home and went to North's just as easy as that and then Clay came begging her to come home. What made him even more of a flop for a hero was when he told her he'd wait for her while North used her. I think it would have been much better reading had the author spent a little more time developing the characters and their feelings, maybe given us a little more detail about their lives and how they felt about the people they were involved with. There were three storylines in this book and not near enough time was spent on any of them. I never connected with any of the characters and frankly, I don't know how they connected with each other. It just didn't seem like there was much thought put into the writing of this book.

4 out of 5 stars satisfying.......2005-10-28

This was an easy to read romance that was very predictable, but it was still satisfying. The characters were interesting. The author writes with a style that is easy to read, as well as enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2005-10-19

Joan Johnston has done it again - drawn us into the bitter feud between the Grayhawks and Blackthornes and wrapped us in the not-to-be-denied emotional bond between Libby Grayhawk and Clay Blackthorne.

At eighteen, Kate Grayhawk is still waging a campaign to get her parents together and married. One big stumbling block - Jocelyn Montrose, sister to Clay's late wife and now his fiancee. When she appeals to her Uncle North Grayhawk for help, he takes a step that will have a far-reaching effect on everyone - especially him. A man whose view of women is colored by his father's multiple marriages and lost love, he has held himself apart from emotional entanglement. Until Joss, trying to help Clay, offers him a bargain that turns out to be almost more than he can handle.

Clay and Libby, meanwhile, are thrown together through the plottings of their daughter. History has made them both stubborn and wary of each other, but circumstances will teach them, too, the meaning of real love.

As Joan Johnston takes the reader through the emotional turmoil of these four people, as she skillfully involves us in their conflicts and battles, we see the depth of character in each of them that directs their course for the future. The decisions they will ultimately make will effect everyone, and have a major impact on the Grayhawk-Blackthorn feud.

Who will be the next Mrs. Blackthorne? You'll have to read the book and see, but it is a most staisfying read, and will leave you waiting at the bookstore for the next Bitter Creek novel.

4 out of 5 stars strong entry in the long running feuding Grayhawk- Blackthorne dispute.......2005-09-07

Nineteen years old Kate Grayhawk thought that her rescue from a kidnapping would be the catalyst to bring her biological parents together, but one year since her harrowing experience, Libby Grayhawk and Clay Blackthorne remain apart. Though she knows the families feud, she still has hopes until her prayers seem to be forever unanswered when her father announces his engagement to Jocelyn Montrose.

With the gene pool she carries Kate is not a quitter so continues her efforts to bring her parents together. Surprisingly and serendipitously her Uncle North Grayhawk assists her by buying shares of stock in the Blackthorne Bitter Creek Cattle Company. Meanwhile Jocelyn who always wanted Clay even when he was married to her late sister meets North and is stunned as he sets her heart ablaze like no one else including her fiancé has ever done before. Feeling a need to make things right for Clay and his family she offers herself to North in exchange for the stock not realizing the inferno she and Kate, acting separately, set between the two of them and the fighting families.

This is a strong entry in the long running feuding Grayhawk- Blackthorne dispute. Fans will appreciate the internal battles of the obstinate cast as no one wants to take the first step for fear of rejection by the significant other they love and the consequent scorn by their family. Though Police Officer Jack hits it on the head that Kate is too spoiled and has pitied herself over the years due to the lack of a two parent home, readers will enjoy the latest in Joan Johnston's long running saga.

5 out of 5 stars Its better on the dark side.......2007-10-09

This book is the first in an excellent series. It is technically in the romance aisle (and let me tell you it is VERY explicit) but it leads with the vampire fantasy world and doesn't deviate an inch the whole way through. You will get sucked into the world of the brotherhood and wont be able to turn it down. I read the book straight through in a day and a half and then immediately went out and bought the rest. There is a solid story line and graphic-no-holds-barred sex that could be a cameo in basic instinct. I loved this book and I know you will too. J. R . Ward has the skills to draw you in with well defined characters that make you care about them, then blows your mind and makes you tingly with what goes on behind closed doors!

I have three words for you.....OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!I could not turn the pages fast enough. What an amazing series...amazing story....amazing book! I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Kenyon or Knight the writing and character development in this is a step above. If your thinking twice about buying this series, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-16

This is one of my all time favorite romance novels. Before meeting the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I had absolutely no interest in paranormal romance. I'd always seen the characters in other books of this genre as being creepy, to say the least. My sister forced me to read this book while on vacation.
WoW!! J D Ward's protagonists are so well-written, so engaging and have such gut-wrenching appeal, I was hooked after chapter 2. She has created a completely unique vampire culture - complete with language (each book has a "glossary of terms"), social traditions and even anatomical/biochemical details unique to her brand of vampire.
If you have never been a fan of this genre...please give this book and the others in the series a try. You will NOT regret it!!

5 out of 5 stars BEST in paranormal romance.......2007-09-13

J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series knocks everything else in the paranormal romance subgenre out of the water. Her characters are, hands down, the most rounded, most complex, most magnetic out there. Ward is concise and well-written where Sherrilyn Kenyon rambles and falters. Her plotline is amazingly intricate, original, and well-executed. Tales of the brothers are always fun and funny, easy to fall into. Where Angela Knight's style can be too technical and too slow, not quite self-confident enough, J.R. Ward's books are easy to read and fast-paced, giving you plenty without giving you too much. Even Kresley Cole, my second-favorite author, doesn't do the world-building and character exploration J.R. Ward does. The one down spot, for me anyway, is the lessers. I have trouble making myself read those parts, but then again, I can at times be a lazyish reader who won't deviate from the main characters' storyline. Overall, I'd give this an A+.

        Book Description

This bold reworking of part of the Arthurian cycle is set in a historically accurate 5th century Britain and includes Lancelot's trial at arms and the little known False Guinevere legend. Told from Lancelot's point of view, Queen's Champion depicts Lancel

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic.......2007-08-16

I read the reviews and agree that this is not the "Camelot" of legend. Given the historic period, this is probably a truer Arthur and a truer Britain. The magic is still there, Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, but so is the reality of what it would have been like to live in 5th century England. Lancelot is a true hero, who while keeping his secret and fulfilling his destiny to protect his Queen at all costs, manages to make the reader a commrade, a friend even, as the story progresses. At times I forgot I was reading, the story playing like a film vividly in my mind. My only complaint, it could have been 300 pages longer, with more detail about the land and the culture and the history of their society at the time. It was a story that I just did not want to end.

If you like this one, try "Roses & Thorns : Beauty and the Beast Retold (Classic Tales Retold)", if you can find a copy. Another very good retelling.

4 out of 5 stars Poetry in Motion.......2006-05-11

There is a moment, at the beginning of chapter four, when Lancelot is heading north into a battle and pauses at Hadrian's wall as the rest of the troops surge around him. I realized at that moment that I wasn't reading, but watching. The imagery in this book is so clear that I could see the wind whipping his cloak, and his horse stamping with impatience to follow the others. Such concrete imagery delights the reader of this book at every turn, enough to feel as if the book is so solid it can be chewed rather than read.

Much praise goes to the author for two reasons: one, the research that must have gone into both the time and the legends; and two, knowing how much to tell, and when to stop and let the story go on. Not knowing much of the Arthurian legends beyond Tennyson and White, I was charmed with Lancelot's magical adventures at Doloros Gard. I don't know what the author imagined and what is the stuff of recorded legend, but whatever she drew from each fit together seamlessly and made it all believable. If DiMarco made up what happened during Lancelot's youth, I'm buying it.

The tension of the unrequited love of Lancelot and Guinevere is delicious. This is a modern take on an ancient story, and it is wonderful.

Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression. Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD. This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television. Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts. Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style. The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage. Another SUPER COOL and USEFUL music book by Larry McCabe.

Okay, first of all, the original "legend of King Arthur" is more like this book than the one everyone is accustomed to hearing.
In the eleventh century Eleanor d'Aquitaine, an English queen, had the story of King Arthur (who was actually, historically speaking, probably not even a king), "remade" into something that sounded better and that introduced chivalry, courage, etc: the traditional knight's story. But that oh so beautiful story that everyone loves oh so much is a nonexistent fairy tale. Whoever is saying that this book ruins their beautiful story obviously doesn't know much in the way of history. This story is one of the first that has enough courage to gainsay the "traditional" Arthurian legend and portray the characters as actually human. If you're looking for a realistic, honestly good, and not hopelessly sappy book, I recommend this one.

                        1 out of 5 stars what?????.......2001-08-28

I love stories of King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelet. It's the most beautiful, romantic love triangle ever told. I am so disappointed in this book. This author just butchered all the historical characters I have come to love. What's left is a mean, grumpy King Arthur, a very dull queen, and a sappy knight. And the ending??? I am very open minded, and love a good twist on a story, but frankly, this book just left me with a bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended. If you're looking for a new perspective of this classic tale, read Bradley's The Mists of Avalon.

5 out of 5 stars Rich. Powerful. A little bit stunning.......2001-03-30

Be warned right now: This book is not for the "lazy" reader. You will be fully transported into this other world of knights, quests and all-consuming love affairs. This is by far one of the most detailed, rich and historically accurate tales of this time period I have ever read -- and as a history major I've read a lot. The story draws on some of the most rare of the stories involving Lance, Gwen and the King. It is a must-read for anyone who loves this myth. HOWEVER, don't be caught off guard: This is a retelling for GLBT readers and other open-minded folks. If you don't know what I mean then here's another hint: There's a "Crying Game" type of secret about that handsome young Lance... and a heck of a lot more to "his" relationship with the Queen than most might think. A GREAT read. Well worth it.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've ever read.......2000-11-04

I opened this book expecting a retelling of the King Arthur story from Lancelot's point of view. I got a story that had almost nothing to do with the King Arthur legends except in the names of the characters.

I got a story where Arthur and Lancelot were not, nor were they ever friends, and Guinivere and Arthur were not in love. I have read a great many of the King Arthur legends and was shocked to read this one. One of the items that makes the story of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot so intriguing is that it is a love triangle. All involved are supposed to love each other thereby making it a tragedy. In this book, instead of the legendary tragedy, it was portrayed as someone who loves a woman who is married to a heartless man.

I found neither the depth nor the content that I expected. I wanted to know what Lancelot thought about Morgan and Mordred, about his comradarie for his king, his quest for the Holy Grail, his son Galahad. Morgan and Mordred were mentioned once or twice, King Arthur and Lancelot barely spoke, Lancelot never sired a child, and the Holy Grail was never mentioned.

In addition to what the book was about, I found the sentences and phrases mundane and hard to follow. I thought it was a book by a teenager because of some of the phrases and the many descriptions and references to sex, none of which were exciting in any capacity.

In short, I would not recommend this book to anyone. If you are looking for a telling of the King Arthur legends from different perspectives, I would read at Bradley's book, "The Mists of Avalon." I have never found another book about Arthur which comes close to the depth and amazing cadence of The Mists of Avalon.

                        5 out of 5 stars Finally, a new perspective.......2000-08-16

All my life I've dreamed of living in the *real* Arthur's court and wondered what it was like. Not the medieval version so many writers fall back on, but the post-Roman Britain when the Warlord Arthur and his clan really lived. This book made me feel like I was there. The detail is amazing; the story so moving and real I even dreamed about the book at night! If you think you've read all there is to read about Arthur and Guinevere and Lancelot, you haven't. READ THIS!

                        Book Description

The facts of life have never been more complicated for gay men. While the threat of AIDS has been diminished by new treatments and longer life expectancy, HIV remains a serious and intractable foe. In this affirming guide, therapist Michael Mancilla, himself HIV-positive, helps fellow gay men, both single and partnered, pursue the happy and fulfilling love life they deserve. Readers will find advice on everything from meeting Mr. Right and talking about HIV status to building the long-term relationships that many never expected to have. Candid first-hand accounts reveal how others in the community are negotiating safer sex, overcoming legal and financial hurdles to plan for the future, learning to accept care as well as give it, and crafting the kinds of intimate relationships they want, whether that means casual sex, dating, or permanent commitment. Smart, honest, and insightful, this book is written from the heart.

In a recent visit to a clinic for a vaccine study I managed to discuss the state of treatment with the last of the three most well-known experts in HIV and Aids here in Austin, TX. In appraising the situation he said one third of his patients were older gentlemen who had been living with HIV and Aids for over 20 years, and who had experienced bad side effects, resistance, and serious health issues. He said the other thrid were younger and on medications, who have limited side effects and who have great success with the medicines. He said the last third was newly diagnosed even younger men who currently show no viral load although testing as Positive for antibodies, and who are not yet on treatment...

This book would have been better if it addressed the second two thirds of the men my doctor mentioned - those living with HIV currently who do not fit the picture of devastation that the Right-dominated medical PR machine would rather talk about. This book seems to focus on only men for whom HIV and Aids is an extremely difficult health challenge, and I found myself wondering what era it was written in...? Though much of the intent and advice is great and very needed - it needs to be updated and brought into the current times.

5 out of 5 stars Washington Blade Review.......2004-02-06

Michael Mancilla and Lisa Troshinsky provide a thorough roadmap through the often rough and complicated terrain of finding romance and relationships in the face of HIV.

Mancilla, an HIV-positive psychotherapist, feels passionately about helping HIV-positive gay men find and embrace loving relationships.

The authors address this topic by using a variety of techniques to engage readers, including personal anecdotes, highlighted text boxes, practical tips, quizzes, and numerous references to additional resources.

"Love in the Time of HIV" describes a new era in the history of HIV, one where the authors say HIV-positive men have the luxury of worrying about how to date against the backdrop of HIV, instead of just coping with short-term survival.
