The Mummy Anne Rice weaves the same magic for the world and history of mummies that she previously did for the worlds and mythologies of vampires and witches. Ramses the Great lives, but having drunk the elixir of life, he is now Ramses the Damned, doomed forever to wander the earth, desperate to quell certain mummy hungers that can never be satisfied!
Book Description
"The reader is held captive, and, ultimately, seduced."
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
Ramses the Great has awakened in Edwardian London. Having drunk the elixir of life, he is now Ramses the Damned, doomed forever to wander the earth, desperate to quell hungers that can never be satisfied. Although he pursues voluptuous aristocrat Julie Stratford, the woman for whom he desperately longs is Cleopatra. And his intense longing for her, undiminished over the centuries, will force him to commit an act that will place everyone around him in the gravest danger....

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Rice takes a break from the bloodsuckers and heads for bandages. Of course, being a romance type writer, not a lot of rotting smelly staggering corpse mummies to be found here, just a charismatic, charming, dangerous version, instead.
Other than that, the usual setting, noble Egyptian awakened, hangs out with a woman who can't resist him, and has a horrible secret. These mummy guys crave sun, sex and all that sort of thing.
A secret potion gives the mummy his immortality and superhuman powers, and he seeks out Cleopatra, intending to revive her, but ends up creating a monster instead.
Beautifully dark and seductive.......2007-08-22
I love this novel! it feels so different from any of Anne's other works, but it doesnt lose her signature descriptive writing style. Its sometimes dark and pretty sexy at times. The characters are all perfectly described. I loved Ramses in this. I could literally visualise every scene and location. This is one of my favorite Anne Rice novels. It really has it all. I could barely put it down and have re-read it 3 times now. The way she writes, it makes it almost believable.
Strangely erotic.......2007-07-30
This has to be the BEST Anne Rice book, besides Interview with the Vampire.
The story takes place in both Edwardian London and Cario, Egypt. Archaeologist Lawrence Startford uncovers a long, lost tomb in Cario, Egypt that holds a strangely wrapped mummy. All goes terribly wrong when his dimwit nephew, Henry Stratford kills him. The mummy is then bundled up and shipped to England where it makes its way to his friend, Lord Rutherford's home.
Once at Lord Rutherford's home, the mummy's curse is broken, and it comes back to life. We found out that thousands of years ago Ramses found an old woman who claims that she had a potion that can make a person live forever. Ramses drinks the potion against the old womans warning, and is cursed to wander the world forever.
The books gets strangely erotic when Lord Rutherford's daughter, Julie begins to fall in love with Ramses, but he has other women on his mind. When the trio (Ramses, Julie, Lord Rutherford) land in Cario, Egypt Ramses finds the decomposed body of his long-lost love, Cleopatra. He makes a batch of the potion up and smears it on her bones. You can guess what happens next.
I'm not going to give away anymore spoilers, but I will say Anne Rice has done another wonderful job. The characters are well written, very erotic (even Lord Rutherford has a few secrets in his head), and this book leaves you in a cliffhanger which begs Anne Rice to write a sequal.
A must have in everyone's bookshelf.

One of the best books I've ever read!!.......2006-12-01
I've read the book three times and it's still as great as the first read... It's thrilling and suspenseful... It just fantastic! Anne Rice is one of the most experienced writers ever!
Also, you should read (if you haven't already) "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Queen of the Damned"...
"To love and to hate so fiercely...was the essence of life itself.".......2006-08-05
Several love stories, numerous murders, the discovery of an undead mummy, the bringing to life of Cleopatra, and an ending which is not an ending keep the reader occupied and amused from beginning to end--enjoyable escape reading. Famed archaeologist Lawrence Stratford has discovered a mysterious tomb belonging to Ramses, while excavating in Egypt in 1914. Ancient hieroglyphs and Greek and Roman inscriptions warn potential discoverers of the tomb that Ramses had been alive for a thousand years when he entered the tomb--that he is immortal, forced to live as Ramses the Damned. Inside the tomb are jars filled with liquids, one of which is thought to ensure immortality.
Brought back to London in his mummy case, Ramses is eventually awakened by the sun, which was worshipped by the Egyptians. Bursting his bandages, he escapes into twentieth century England, where he becomes known as Reginald Ramsey. His love for Julie Stratford, daughter of the now-deceased archaeologist, becomes more complicated, however, when he and Julie return to Egypt and he discovers and brings to life the mummified body of Cleopatra, his former lover.
The triangle of Ramses, Cleopatra, and Mark Antony underlies and adds tension to the modern romances of Ramsey and Julie, and of Cleopatra and Alex, Julie's former fiance. Subplots involving the murderous Henry Stratford (Julie's cousin), the vengeful Cleopatra, and the "helpful" Eliot, Lord Rutherford (Alex's father), add over-the-top drama to the romances and keep the action moving at breakneck speed.
Rice's descriptions of the England of the day, through the astonished responses of Ramses and Cleopatra to the modern world, provide insights into the period with its passion for Egyptology. Ironies, especially one associated with a modern death, compete with Rice's delightfully gruesome descriptions to keep the reader repulsed and amused, simultaneously. Deliberate parallels with the opera "Aida," which figures prominently near the end of the novel, cleverly set up Rice's conclusion--at least as far as it goes here.
Readers familiar with Rice expect characters who never die, bloody confrontations, and unlimited gore--pure escape reading. But they also expect some sort of conclusion, or, in the case of her series, follow-up novels which eventually resolve the story. This novel, though written as if it were the introduction to a new series, remains a stand-alone, with a "conclusion" which does not resolve the major issues. Rice may have written herself into a corner here--it is difficult to imagine any conclusion that could work, given the way this one ends. Still, Ramses/Ramsey's story is great fun--a light entertainment that never pretends to be anything else. n Mary Whipple

You don't have to be a cat lover..........2007-04-16
I have enjoyed several titles by this author. They are always a quick and easy read - very enjoyable!
Here Kitty,Kitty.......2007-01-29
This is a short wet your appetite journal, begs for more stories, it's a good old fashion detective story that makes you think, and make you feel you are part of the plots, if you like cats and you like good clean story lines Lilian Jackson Braun books are for you.
A Rare Foul Ball from Mrs. Braun.......2005-09-19
Being a great fan of Koko and Yum Yum I was absolutely delighted when I saw this book. I figured that this would be a compendium of cute cat stories that were never mentioned in the actual mystery series but alas, I was wrong. Most all of the anecdotes related in this book come directly from the pages of previously published books and what little new material there is, is not very well thought out or written. I really can't imagine that Mrs. Braun actually wrote this book because it is really not up to her talent level.
Worse yet, several of the little stories give away the ending of the other books and if I had not already read most of the ones mentioned I would be quite upset. The worst thing about this book is that the idea behind it had so much promise. The lives of these two lovable cats are obviously not completely covered in the series proper for there are times when James Qwilleran, the cat's human companion, is not solving mysteries. A look at what these two felines are up to during these down times would be great fun and with a little effort and imagination this could have been a delightful book. Unfortunately, there appears to have been far to little effort and absolutely no imagination applied to this project and whoever came up with this mess should be ashamed of themselves.
The only redeeming qualities of this book are the adorable picture of the two Siamese cats on the back cover and the frequent references to T.S. Eliot's cat Rum Tum Tugger. A little class never hurts.
Blank Pages and Redundant Material.......2004-10-20
I received this book as a gift, and I am so glad I did not buy it. It is a 137 page book, of which over 50 pages (FIFTY PAGES) are blank, or have bad line-art of a siamese cat. The remaining pages are large type, double spaced, half of which are just rehashes of previous books. I figure there are probably 30 pages of original material. It's obvious that Ms. Braun (or the publishers using a ghostwriter) are just trying to milk the fan base for more money. Avoid this book, even if you are a Cat Who completist.
Astounding Performance That Brings us Into the Cats' Lives.......2004-03-14
"The Private Life of the Cat Who..." is a light, fun read that brings us a bit closer to our favorite mystery cats. With this audiobook performance, George Guidall brings us even closer. Guidall is a master at narrating Qwilleran's style, adopting the many voices of the series and providing the sound for the many noises made by Koko and Yum Yum. Read the book and then delight in Guidall's narration of each entry, bringing the story to life. Thrill to sayings of "Kool Koko," delight in the tale of Yum Yum's thimble and just have a good time.
Note: This audiobook can be found in both cassette form and on a CD.

Customer Reviews:
A Complete Waste of Time and Space.......2007-05-31
Who wrote this book and why? I have read and loved all the Cat Who books, but this one didn't seem to make any sense. It rambled on and on about 100 different subjects - disjointed and with no rhyme nor reason. (in spite of all the little rhymes Braun included) Some reviewers find it a delightful compilation of snips from previous books, but I find it boring and meaningless. It read like the notes for a REAL book. Don't bother.
Koko and Yum Yum Ho Ho!.......2007-01-04
Snippets of feline life from a favorite author provide light reading and an evening's worth of amusement. Find tales from the past and little insights to the duo's delightful designs on Qwilleran's definition of normal as well as bits recalling characters from the past. This is a good "popcorn" book for a long and blustery winter's night.
If you have read the books you have already read THIS!.......2004-02-27
If you are looking for something new from Moose County read The Cat Who talked Turkey,if you have read all the others. If you are new to the series start at the beginning. But this book is nothing but excerpts and if you are a die hard fan you have already read all this. Avoid it!
Too short.......2004-01-06
An avid fan of the Cat Who series, I was dissappointed in "The Private Life of the Cat Who..." book. I had expected (and hoped) for detailed insight & feelings from Qwill's observations and day to day interaction with his feline companions. Instead, I got just a few brief notes on events I had already read about. If you're looking to get into the Cat Who series, pick up any of Lilian Jackson Brauns' books, just dont start with this one.
An Adorable Little Gift Book!.......2003-11-25
I agree that in order to really enjoy this book the reader must be an avid cat fancier and/or a fan of Ms. Braun's Cat Who series. Someone without one of these traits would just look at this book in astonishment and wonder why it was written, and they probably wouldn't take the time to read it. But for those of us who love Koko and Yum Yum, this book is a real treasure. It's heartwarming and wonderful! Ms. Braun is the piece de resistance in the cozy genre and she proves it with this little anthology of rhymes, stories and anecdotes about those fabulous felines of Qwill's. The book is very short and only takes a little time to read, so I recommend that you do so.

Customer Reviews:
GOTTA LOVE LADY ASSASSINS.......2005-07-27
Despite the maturity warning, this series has some cool characters. From a woman who can turn into a cheetah, to a woman with a sword, and a woman who simply strangles people with her hair. And it just so happens they are a pop idle group by day and assasins by night. However all these girls have a past behind them which carries good plot development.
Like a lot of fantasy stuff, you can't take the plot too seriously, but the light-hearted tone that the characters' personalities exhibit keep the otherwise morbid storyline moving quickly, which more than makes up for any logical gaps. Plus, there are quite a few comedic moments (that I won't spoil for you)!
Ultimately, the artwork is really the star in this volume, and Ms. Asagiri's renderings of the women are quietly haunting. If you enjoyed the anime, give the book a try.

A FANTASTIC GUIDE TO TCM.......2003-05-10
This book pulled me in the moment I opened it. It is incredibly easy to read and is a very good introductory guide to Traditional Chinese Medicine. I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about TCM but does not want to read large books on the topic. This book is written without lots jargon or unnecessary details. It is easy to follow and understand.
Read it, you won't regret it, especially if you are a beginner such as myself.
An abundance of information for such a slim book.......2001-03-23
This book is a little gem. It sets out the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the theoretical framework and types of treatment (acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, cupping, herbal medicine and Qi gong) in an amazingly easy to understand way. It also includes additional information on the history of TCM, accreditation in the US, and safety aspects. If you want to get to grips with what TCM is all about, but don't want to be bogged down with a tome, this is the book for you.
An excellent quick reference for any busy professional........1999-08-07
Voices of Qi is a pleasant way to obtain a great deal of TCM information in a short amount of time. Mr. Holland has the skills and talent to present some very new ways of thinking in some very familiar ways of thought. The book bridges the Eastern concepts with the Western mindset and does so with ease. With the rise in public and private interest of acupuncture this book should be read by all. It is one of those books that makes one say, "I wish I could write like that". Also, the book has very beautiful illustrations and design from cover to cover. I highly recommend and suggest this book for everyone, from M.D.s to massage students.
