Customer Reviews:
A great "prequel" for the TV series.......2003-07-06
If you're expecting to "see" Archie, Golly, Duncan, et al, they're not around...yet...in this audio version of MacKenzie's novel, which takes place between the two world wars.
Despite a bit of a slow start, the book is a hoot and will definitely get you through a long car trip, or many long commutes! David Rintoul's reading is excellent and never monotonous. You'll get a good flavour of Highland life and traditions and have more than a few laughs.
Highland Tale.......2002-11-22
For anyone familiar with the very popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen, much in this audio book will ring familiar. And, for those unfortunate not to be familiar with the series, the book will be an entree into the world of a Scottish Highland Chieftan of the 20th Century.
The tale takes place in Scotland in the early 1940's at the castle Glenbogle, the ancestral estate of the Clan MacDonald. The patriarch is a stodgy old Highlander trying to make the best of the 20th century, but with his values firmly planted 400 years earlier. There's a bit of everything in here, a love story, a battle, some history as to kilts and clans and highland lore. Quite of lot of Gaelic is spoken and by the end of the story some of it actually starts to sound familiar.
The narrator does an excellent job with the wide cast of characters ranging from Americans, to Brits and Scots. I found myself laughing out loud many times. It was a great "read" on my way to and from work.
A note of caution though for those who have seen the series: There is only a hint of similarity to the series, but don't let the name changes etc turn you off, the story in total could easily have taken place in the Glenbogle we've seen on film.

The Target
Lily Noretski is as dangerous as she is beautiful. She's also a sleeper in possession of a devastating weapon.
The Agent
As a sharpshooter, Navy SEAL Reed Vincenzio is as emotionless as they come. Armed with a file on his target, Reed knows what he has to do.
The Mission
Reed must win Lily's confidence, find the weapon . . . and eliminate her if necessary. Yet his files don't even begin to hint at this extraordinary woman's fire and courage, making this assignment harder than any Reed has ever undertaken.
Lily knows that someone is pulling her strings, but if she is to survive, she must put her life in the hands of this charming, magnetic man who appeared out of nowhere. Her head tells her she's in grave peril, but her heart dares her to put everything on the line. Will the price of her passion prove to be more than she bargained for?
Customer Reviews:
What's with Lily? .......2006-12-09
In "The Hunter" Lily was quick, independent & didn't let anyone interfere with her goals. In "Sleeping With the Agent" she became clingy, wimpy & allowed Reed to lead her around and make decisions for her. To me this character was ruined & a book I was looking forward to a disappointment.
I gave it a four because of the inclusion of other characters that were more interesting than the leads. Lily never seemed to catch on to the fact that Reed came into this assignment with every intention of killing her. Color me crazy but that would be a relationship breaker to me.
only for Gennita's fans.......2006-02-16
Gennita's latest SEAL hero, Reed, is yummy but that's the only thing that got me in Sleeping With the Agent. I did not care for Lily in the previous book and though her this is *her* book, I still did not take to her.
Overall, I found this book just average and I consider myself a huge Gennita Low fan. It lacked the complexity and substance I found in her earlier books and this one felt rushed and overly simple - as if Gennita sat down one morning and wrote it in one day. I am disappointed because I expected a lot more depth in the interactions between the characters, certainly between Reed and Lily. I found it hard to buy into the romance. Unlike some fans, I loved the Protector and thought it was Gennita's best while I found The Hunter (which many liked) rather bland. After 'Sleeping', I find The Hunter was a better book. Nevertheless, it makes me want to read ALL Gennita's books again just to see why I liked one more than the other. Though I found Sleeping With the Agent disappointing, Gennita is still an auto-buy for me and will remain so for a long time to come.
Like all her fans, I am waiting for T and Alex's story. It was a nice surprise to see them pop at the end of this book, which leads me to believe theirs will be the next book?
good but not her best..........2006-01-28
I'm not going to be redundant and tell you the plot - others do that well here and we all have things to do. I sometimes wonder if we're all reading the same books, however. I am definitely a big fan of Ms. Low and I would rate all of her books as solid 4 1/2s or 5s - The Hunter was amazing! I disagree that the love scenes were tepid - they weren't. And there was great depth of character that she revealed in Amber and Hawk while not inundating us with boring minutiae. Instead, it was all go go go with a good laugh thrown in (I loved his burger order). With this book, however, I found myself to be disappointed somewhat. It's still good (hence the 4*) but I think that it's missing the depth of plot and characterization that Ms. Low has revealed in her other work. She has spoiled us to expect the best in this type of novel and hasn't been afraid to explore darker parts of her characters. I thought the idea of having Lily as the main character was a good one, especially since we're all waiting for Jed (and I bet the next one will be Brad Sun). I just got the feeling that Ms. Low ran out of things to say about Lily, as if she, herself, wasn't sure what to do with the character or how to portray her to make her both sympathetic and complex. And Reed was fairly shallowly drawn, I thought. Others clearly disagree. If I hadn't read the other novels and enjoyed them so much I may not be disappointed now; unfortunately, this seemed a little too churned out for my tastes with not enough thought behind it (and the editing could have been tighter). I look forward to her next novel, though, and am sure that it will be as enjoyable as most of Ms. Low's work remains.
Sleeping With The Agent is another wild ride........2006-01-19
Llallana "Lily" Noretski is on the run, she has no one to trust. She is afraid that whatever the CIA did to her will now make her turn on those she holds dear. All Lily cares about now is getting those abused young girls to a better life. When Lily is unable to obtain all the necessary passports for travel she makes an uneasy alliance with a gun smuggling handsome stranger.
Navy Seal Reed Vincenzio is brought in on a joint mission to bring Lily in or to eliminate her. Lily was activated from a sleep cell months ago and has a dangerous device in her possession. Reed is a highly skilled sharpshooter and normally a job like this would be a snap for him. But getting to know Lily has made Reed unsure about his Intel on this mission. Reed tries to keep a tight rein on Lily but Lily isn't used to depending on anyone.
As these two form an alliance the danger to Lily intensifies. Reed has fallen for this exotic beauty and will risk all to save her.
Sleeping With The Agent is a trill a minute read. It's enthralling both in the intrigue, passion and deep friendships. Ms. Low really made Lily a likeable character, you can feel her anguish about her past deeds. Reed and Lily's growth in trust and as lovers is exceptional.
Looking forward to the next book for this author. Hoping someday to read T and Alex's story..
Thrilling Intrigue and Sensually Stimulating - Oh Yeah!.......2006-01-17
Lily Noretski is beautiful and dangerous. She'd been betrayed by the CIA - people who were supposed to be helping her - and turned into a `sleeper cell'. While under another's control, Lily had betrayed the only friend she'd ever known. Now on the run, Lily was in possession of a destructive weapon that had to be recovered before an enemy handler could contact her and use it to upset world power.
After a Special US Ops team (GEM) located Lily, Navy SEAL sharpshooter Reed Vicenzio was assigned the task of getting close, winning Lily's trust, finding the weapon, and if need be, `taking her out'. Reeds normally dispassionate nature was aroused not only by Lily's courageous strength, but her beauty. The closer he got, Reed recognized her compassion and courage as she worked to get `her girls' - sex slave victims, like she had once been, to safety.
It was a supreme effort for Lily to trust, but she was discovering that the enigmatic man who kept saving her life seemed more than able to fit the bill. Knowing that someone was trying to manipulate her head, Lily fought her way out of the fog trying to complete her own self-appointed mission. Though danger appeared at every corner, Lily only began to feel safe when enclosed in Reed's arms. For both, the price they would pay for their passion could come at a deadly cost.
-- Discovering Low's Crossfire trilogy in this, the final book, I can certainly understand the praise this writers generating of her exciting and intensely suspenseful thrillers! This was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end starring two captivating protagonists. Reed is that totally alpha male - an awesome and yummy hero! While it did take me a bit of time to come up to speed with the numerous characters and incidents mentioned from the previous books in the Crossfire trilogy, I was quickly immersed in the adventure and thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of the rollercoaster, which I recommend lovers of suspenseful intrigue to hop on board for the ride!

Characters come to life.......2007-03-22
Young Kleopatra, the third youngest daughter of King Auletes Ptolemy, studies in the Great Library with Sosogines of Heliopolis, as well as in the Gymnasion, throwing lances and running, under the guidance of her loyal Sword-Bearer, Timoxenos. She is a well-rounded princess who learns to speak Egyptian in order to understand her father's people. One to help the poor and save the oppressed, she is destined for greatness.
Her training does her well when at age 15 she is forced to leave the palace in Alexandria as her father is forced from the throne. She is safely ensconced for a while, under the care of Memnes, the high priest of Heliopolis, as her father travels to Rome in hopes of raising an army. What evil has overthrown the King? None other than Kleopatra's sister, Berenike.
As Kleopatra escapes from hiding place to hiding place, her sister's army searching for her, she develops her skills and is blessed by the Gods and Goddesses with talents and powers beyond her imagining. With Timoxenos ever by her side, she faces daimons, evils and days of war. As an initiate in Hermetic Magic, Kleopatra learns that the great evil in Egypt is not just her sister but also the Lord of Chaos, Seth-Typhon. Will the great Phoenix, Hermes, and Wedjoyet be able to help her? Even they realize that only the Goddess of Ten Thousand Names can save Egypt.
In an epic tale of Gods and Goddesses, Kings and Princesses, author Dharma Windham has created a novel of excitement, romance, magic, and morals. It is an in-depth look at Egypt and royalty wrapped up in an entrancing story of heroism, justice and bravery. The characters come to life complete with natural urges, rude behaviors, human flaws and deep desires. The plot twists and expands like an ever-changing force of war.
Not your usual work of fiction in these days and I was truly satisfied reading the tale of the "Reluctant Goddess."
Swiftly carries readers through countless twists and turns of fortune .......2006-06-10
Reluctant Goddess: Kleopatra And The Stolen Throne by Dharma Windham is a novel of Kleopatra who was in her youth when her father's throne was stolen by her brother and a group of hostile Egyptian priests and court counselor. Kleopatra's narrow escape provides an experience giving her a passion for saving her deteriorating country from its inept and exploitative overlords. Deftly intertwining real places, people, and occurrences of the era, Reluctant Goddess swiftly carries readers through countless twists and turns of fortune as the aspiring young queen must escape from hired assassins and survive the relentless efforts toward her demise with only the faith of the Gods to provide her with inspiration to reclaim her birth-right name as Queen of Egypt. Skillfully written, Reluctant Goddess is very strongly recommended as a romanticized story of one of the last of the Greek Pharaohs of Egypt -- the young queen Kleopatra.
So far, the best read of 2006!!!.......2006-05-25
Reluctant Goddess: Kleopatra And The Stolen Throne is not only a great read but it offers the reader a vibrant new look at the legendary Egyptian Queen, Kleopatra-considered to be one of the most powerful and beautiful women who ever lived. Windham's Kleopatra leaves behind the Hollywood version of this renown queen and gives a more accurate portrayal of the adventurous young woman behind the myth. The author accomplishes that rare feat of using historical research and weaving it with nonstop panoramic action. His characters are shockingly real and vibrant with all their human foibles and accomplishments, and the family dynamics are better than anything you could find on Desperate Housewives. Reluctant Goddess, while Windham's first book, foretells of many adventures yet to come.
A sumptuous and enchanting tale!!!.......2006-05-09
Ancient Egypt has always exerted a powerful influence over the minds of modern readers, no more so than during the last flowering of its independent existence under the rule of the Greek pharaohs of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The last in that notable line is perhaps the best known. Alas, Kleopatra has, courtesy of Hollywood, become the embodiment of romantic tragedy. Dharma Windham has shown us the other, more personal side of the young princess of Egypt during her formative years, before events conspired to thrust her upon the stage of world history. In this challenging task she has succeeded admirably, brilliantly combining historical fact with a sympathetic understanding of the personalities caught up in this mighty drama of Egypt's final decades of independence. For this she is to be congratulated, as readers will now have the opportunity to gain a more balanced view of a truly remarkable woman the modern perception of which has been grossly distorted by the hostile (male) propaganda of a later age. In this glorious historical novel Dharma Windham offers a lavish, lushly detailed retelling of the fabled Kleopatra with a dose of sensuality thrown in for good measure. If you like early Anne Rice, this is the book for you! It left me gasping for more! More! A real page turner from beginning to end! My toes are still curling!!!
Rad book.......2006-05-06
If you liked Mists of Avalon, and/or are enthralled by Egypt, strong women, and ancient history this is the right book for you. It's magickal and mystical--with Gods and Goddesses, and rich in historical detail thaty is livley and entertaining--and accurate. In the past the story of young Kleopatra's rise to queenship has been limited to "she sexy, she wrapped herself in a rug and was delivered to Caesar, married him and had a kid and then after his death married Marc Anthony" you know the Liz Taylor movie version. This book gives a far deeper picture, going into the manipulations of the court and Kleo's family, her escape from alexandria and the battles she fought. It's NOT bring! And it's got some pretty sexy scenes, too! A GREAT READ!!!

Morphing the Myths.......2003-09-21
At last Richard Purtill's Kaphtu Trilogy has returned to print. These new large size paperback collector editions feature acid-free paper, an interior illustration, and full color fantasy cover art (see the author's website at alivingdog.com for a comparison of the covers). The cover of The Golden Gryphon Feather (Book One) is by George Barr, who also did the late '70s DAW books edition cover. Don Maitz, whose art adorned the DAW cover of Purtill's The Mirror of Helen, provided original paintings for the covers of both The Mirror of Helen and The Stolen Goddess in these new editions.
While this second story continues the adventures of book one, it also stands on its own, and it's not necessary to read the earlier books to follow the trilogy's story line. Purtill sketched the book's setting in ancient Athens and Crete from his many visits to Greece, and fleshed out characters drawn from mythology. Beyond that, his novelization weaves between history and imagination to tell the story of Ducalion, a young seafarer who braves the Hounds of Hades in search of a kidnapped goddess. On the way he encounters Dionysius and Artemis, and finds himself in the midst of a feud between Olympians. The volatile tempers of the Titans alternately swerve between great generosity and cold vengeance, lending an aura of suspense, and the ones Ducalion encounters don't seem to like mortals.
You don't need any background in Homeric legends to read the trilogy, but those familiar with ancient tales will find echoes everywhere. Like Homer, Purtill feels at liberty to morph the myths, with gods and half-gods forever emerging from their ancient haunts. While they can be read separately, all three books of the trilogy interact, and a Return to Kaphtu trilogy is in the works, with a new fantasy, The Athenian Owl Enchantment, due out next year.

Book Description
Prior to publication of this resource guide, no book on the market targeted the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor's need for understandable information. While there are medical texts on the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas as well as inspirational first-person accounts from survivors of related cancers such as leukemia, between these two sources of information existed a considerable information gap. In straightforward language and in a format that anticipates the reader's questions, this book addresses diagnosis and its emotional tumult, finding a good oncologist, the theories and practical aspects of treatment, characteristics of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, side effects and long-term effects of treatment, medical tests and procedures, and prognoses. Other topics of interest examined are coping with hospitalization, stress and its effects on the immune system, sexuality and fertility after treatment, how to interact successfully with medical personnel, and getting support from family, friends, employers and the broader community. The end of successful treatment and its sometimes surprising effects on one's emotions are covered in a separate chapter, as is the experience of relapse and how to select second-line treatment to regain remission. Clinical trials of promising new therapies grounded in Western medicine are covered in depth. The theories and experiences of marrow transplantation and stem cell support are surveyed. Two frank chapters on recordkeeping, finances, insurance, employment issues, traveling for care, and finding free treatment are included. Throughout the text and in several appendices, the reader is referred to other books, Web sites, and organizations that can provide more detail on a given topic. This book is intended for both newly diagnosed and long-term survivors of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, their caregivers and loved ones, and for medical personnel who interact with survivors of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.
Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment!.......2007-06-11
Do not buy this book. It is written in a cold, uncaring manner, completely inappropriate for anyone touched by the disease. Sure it contains facts, but nothing else. It gives a depressing, negative portrayal of the disease. You'd be better off reading nothing at all. On the other hand, "Living With Lymphoma: A Patient's Guide" is the best resource out there. It is truly a must-have. Sorry I wasted my money.
Not Very Helpful.......2007-01-01
I bought this book hoping to learn more about a disease I was diagnosed with, but it was written from a medical doctors point of view and was not very good reading for someone who wanted and needed hope than than something else.
A Must Read For The Newly Diagnosed.......2006-03-20
When I was diagnosed with NH Lymphoma in October 2005, I promptly bought this book. What a lifesaver! This book covers everything a newly diagnosed patient could want. From initial diagnosis, this book takes the patient through all of the different kinds of Non Hodgkins Lymphomas. It tells the patient in detail the kinds of tests that your doctor will most likely order and even give you information on how painful the tests will be. Then it goes into detail on all of the different types of chemotherapy you might undergo as well as radiation therapy, surgeries and biopsies. It takes a tremendous amount of the fear away that a patient has. When I started chemotherapy, the book was right there at my side answering every question that I had. If I had a strange reaction, I reached for the book and sure enough, there was an explanation.
Remember, forewarned is forearmed! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is touched by Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma whether it is a patient or a caregiver.
For every NHL Patient and Caregiver.......2000-03-06
This book can be recommended to anyone whose life has been changed forever by a diagnosis of NHL. If one is filled with trepidation, not wanting to read the cold, hard facts, he/she can be reassured that reading this particular book will only help one understand and cope with the disease, not scare them to death.
Had it been available when I was first diagnosed, I would have found in one place all the information it took me over two years to gather on my own. It sits by my computer, as necessary as my dictionary for reference. Thank you, Lorraine Johnston, for writing this!
fantastic!.......1999-11-09
This is a wonderful, must-have book for any NHL patient. It reads like almost like novel, giving accurate, easy to understand information. I especially like the quotes and antecdotes from the patients themselves; people who have been through it, who "get it"...in their own words. A fantastic resource.
