Book Description
A few years after its liberation from the brutality of French colonial rule in 1803, Haiti endured a period of even greater brutality under the reign of King Henri-Christophe, who was born a slave in Grenada but rose to become the first black king in the Western Hemisphere. In prose of often dreamlike coloration and intensity, Alejo Carpentier records the destruction of the black regime—built on the same corruption and contempt for human life that brought down the French while embodying the same hollow grandeur of false elegance, attained only through slave labor—in an orgy of voodoo, race hatred, madness, and erotomania.

Liberty mocked.......2006-07-21
The crux of the novel is the traumatic and brutal evolution of Haiti's history after liberation from the colonial French rule, when the black regime of King Henri Christophe, at first so promising, sinks into the same morass of social injustice as the former rulers. For years the blacks suffer the yoke of white oppression, clinging to their African gods, ritual superstitions the only balm to a tortured existence: "Oh father, my father, how long is the suffering?" The social order is built upon exploitation of the many for the comfort of the few, the servant class treated as beasts of burden, beaten, beheaded and used to slake the intemperate urges of white masters. A verdant jungle of natural beauty, Haiti has the appearance of paradise and, for the blacks, the reality of hell, the indulgence and decadence of the plantation owners in counterpoint to the misery of the enslaved.
History is revealed through the eyes of a slave, Ti Noel, and through him the social duplicity is exposed. Drawn to the tribal wisdom and ancestral stories of Macandal, Ti Noel reflects the yearning of the slave population for a release from long injustice. Resorting to folk wisdom, voodoo ceremonies and ancestral worship of ancient animus, Macandal whips his followers into a revolt that comes to fruition one fateful night, the drums of bloody opportunity beating across the island as machete-bearing slaves overrun the sleeping plantations, slaughtering all in their path, masters, livestock, women and children. Once the uprising is put down, the search for Macandal proves fruitless, although he is eventually discovered, captured and burned before the downcast eyes of the slaves. The believers see only Macandal's spirit rise from the flames, knowing he will return in other forms to guide them.
Having survived the treachery, Ti Noel's master escapes with him to Santiago de Cuba, where the he embarks on a life of decadence, the slave finally lost in a card game. Years later, returning to Haiti a free man, Ti Noel is confronted with a changed island, now ruled by King Henri Christophe, a black kingdom, the black royalty inflicting the same pain as the white masters, the natural enslavement of the powerless, Christophe's every achievement purchased on the backs of the oppressed. Ti Noel despairs this "endless cycle of chains", convinced that freedom is but an idea, a despot forever hovering in the wings of history. In brilliant imagery and bloody prose, Haiti's drama unfolds, the pomp and grandeur of the new regime constructed from the same contempt for human life as the French and destined fro the same destruction: insurrection fueled by madness and the slaughter of the oppressor. pp Luan Gaines/ 2006.

The Kingdom of This World.......2004-07-29
The Kingdom of This World loosely traces the life of Ti Noel, a solitary Negro who is a slave first under the yoke of a heartless white man, then under the infinitely more brutal reign of a former Negro slave, and finally, upon attaining old age and discovering the voodoo magic that is inherent in all Haiti men, he becomes a slave to his own flesh, to the ideals of humanity, and to the artificial thoughts and designs of man.
Carpentier's writing evokes an older time, we can practically feel the sun-drenched lakes and the harsh yellow earth of Noel's homeland. The French are the masters here, they herd Negroes about as cattle, using them to build, to tend, to feed, to nurture. Unmarried French men have no problem with using a Negro woman for a 'bed-warmer', and even less with throwing her to the meanest and darkest jobs available once their marriage is secured. Uprisings are common, and carry the hint of the magical about them, but eventually, the French always seem to prevail. Until the one armed insurgent, Macandal. Using ancient magic, he poisons the French, killing hundreds in an unseen storm of death that spares no-one, not the women, not the children. When he is finally apprehended, he uses magic to escape and the Negroes laugh at the hopeless French, while the white men look on, puzzled, at the 'callous black men' laughing as their leader dies.
Noel manages to secure freedom from slavery when he is an old man, and he returns to the place where he was first a slave, where he first met Macandal, to see what has become of this place. There, King Henri Christophe, a self-proclaimed Negro king who does little more than imitate court-life of the Europeans, is building a towering citadel with the blood of other Negroes. Noel is horrified that a black man would enslave another black man, and what is worse is that the King's dealings with the slaves are much more severe and unforgiving than the white men ever were. It is here that a mirror is placed up to the Negroes, Noel does not like what he sees.
The writing is very illustrative; scenes and times are painted in our mind's eyes with ease. The narrator manages to place himself very far away from the narration, unwilling to pass judgment on either the black men or the white, instead reserving this to the reader. Noel himself is never used as a mere mouthpiece for the author's ideas, instead he is the observer, from youth to old age, from sadness to sadness. When he discovers magic and tries to introduce himself into the animal's way of life, he does not succeed, and is instead forced to learn how to be a human living amongst humans, no matter how unfair, how violent, how short-sighted they may be.
But this distance hurts the novel, too. Since the narrator never really enters the minds and hearts of the characters, we are left with largely ambiguous motives. Also, the voodoo of the Negroes is something that was lost on me, and I was unable to ascertain whether this extensive witchcraft was used as a writing tool to display good, evil, or neither. The shortness of the novel is actually a hindrance, as too little time is spent fleshing out scenes that might benefit from it. However, in the end, this novel serves as a wonderful fable of what it is to be a man living in a world that he may not agree with, as well as illuminating some of the darker periods of history that we have experienced.
The Kingdom of this World.......2000-06-08
Not long after Haiti's liberation from French colonial rule, King Henri-Christophe reigned through an era of chaos, violence, superstition and socio-political upheaval.
Carpentier details the story of this era, and the eventual overthrowing of Henri-Christophe's black regime, through the narrative of slave Ti-Noel.
For me, the interesting thing about this book was the way in which Carpentier shows how the black regime failed on the same sort of grounds that caused the French regime to become corrupt, outwardly oppulent and inwardly self-destructive. I find it very reminiscent of the sort of dialogue popularized by Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" where he explains how, in an effort to overthrow an oppressive system of education (but this has to work, to some extent, for politics, culture, etc) the rebels end up instituting essentially the same sort of system---only with themselves at the top instead of bottom.
The novel also deals convincingly with issues of cultural patrimony, the occult, and obviously with historical and political scenario. As with many of his books, Carpentier combines a strong dedication to the factual or realistic history with allegory, metaphor and allusion.
The writing style is fairly dense and I did find it difficult to read the novel straight through. However, I found the read very rewarding and also enlightening.
Book Description
Rosalind Rutherford knows full well the scandal she courts when she attempts to seduce the notorious Armond Wulf—in fact, she’s counting on it as a means to escape her sadistic stepbrother’s control. Unfortunately, Lord Wulf’s better instincts prevail...although not before he gives Rosalind a tantalizing taste of what she’s missing. And when the opportunity arises to rescue Armond from a grim fate while changing her own, Rosalind knows she must seize it...
Armond can no more ignore the Rutherford woman than his ancestor could resist the temptress who cursed the Wulf men with a terrifying transformation that occurs at the appearance of the full moon—and is set in motion by love. Now, to save her reputation and his freedom, Armond must marry Rosalind. But he vows that while they may share the pleasures of the marriage bed, she will never have his heart...
Yet as strange and mysterious events bring them closer in body and soul, Armond finds it increasingly difficult to keep his feelings for his new wife locked away. Especially when the reality of unquenchable desire—and certain danger—burn stronger than ever by the light of a full moon...

Kudos to a Master of Paranormal Romance.......2007-07-15
Ronda,
You were always one of the best, one of the first to teach me the joys of paranormal and werewolves. I shall always remember you for that, and for your kindness when we met online. Your work is flawless, and original in ways that other authors envy. You will definitely be missed! Condolences to your family, should they read this, and I hope you are looking down on us from above, and enjoying all the great memorials being posted out there for you, because you deserve it!
a little to howl about...........2007-06-13
as other reviewers mentioned this is a fairly good paranormal romance set in a historical time period. As someone who reads primarily historical romances I really liked that it was set in regency times as most paranormals are set in modern day-which I'm not that interested in.
The book does have some problems-my main problem being the situation between Rosalind and her lady's maid Lydia. Lydia was raped and brutalized by Rosalind's stepbrother (Rosalind was also being beaten by him), was begged not to confront him, but Rosalind does anyway, causing Lydia's death. I don't understand why female authors have to make female characters act so stupidly like this-doing something that would obviously cause pain to the person who took them into their confidence.
Besides the above stupid action-the book was exciting and I enjoyed the fact that the villains were truly villainous-very cruel and sadistic-but that makes their overthrow all the better:). I found Rosalind to be a strong heroine-she behaves a bit stupidly a couple of times-but redeems herself in the end by literally standing by her man. Armand is everything a paranormal or Gothic hero should be-dark and brooding that hides a wounded facade that the heroine must uncover. The love scenes are highly sensual but interspersed with enough romance to take the "edge" off.
The storyline is interesting done as the 4 brothers are not werewolves in the traditional sense but under a curse. The secondary characters are what make the story and have interested me enough that I want to read the others in the series.
All in all-not the best paranormal I've read but exciting enough that I would recommend it to Historical Romance fans and Paranormal fans looking for something a bit different.
3.5 stars.

Ronda Thompson has always been a master at the paranormal, but she's taken it to a new level with her new "The Wild Wulfs of London" series. Beginning with THE DARK ONE, we're immersed into a paranormal regency world where nothing is what it seems, and where the choices you make might not have the outcome that you had proposed.
For Lady Rosalind Rutherford, things have gone from bad to worse. Her stepbrother, Franklin Chapman, has incurred large gambling debts that he cannot pay off. He's unable to sell the estate he's been living in, since it was a gift to his late mother from her late husband, the Duke of Montrose. Even if he'd been able to find a way to get around the fact that the estate wasn't his own, now that his stepsister Rosalind has come to live in the home, there's no discernible way to erase his debt. So Franklin, in typical evil-rogue style, decides to marry his dear stepsister off to the highest bidder, and use the acquired funds to clear his gambling debts.
The Chapman estate sits next to that of the Wulf's, a family of brothers cursed by an ancient witch many years ago. Love was their downfall, and now, whenever there's a full moon, the Wulf's turn into something much more dangerous than mere men. But when Lord Armond Wulf is introduced to Lady Rosalind at the first ball of the season, he's immediately smitten-or, more accurately, immediately filled with lust for the raven-haired beauty. Armond, however, knows that he's doomed to live a life of solitude, a life without the warmth and love of a woman. A woman caused their family's downfall, and he's determined to now allow the same to happen to him.
However, Lady Rosalind has other ideas. She has no plans to sit idly by while her stepbrother sells her off like cattle, so she sets out to do the one thing that might foil his plan-ruin her reputation so far beyond repair that no one will want to marry her. And she's found the perfect way towards this sinful fall from grace-Armond Wulf, a man who already has the type of reputation she wishes for herself.
Unfortunately, even though Armond has no desire to marry, he does desire Rosalind, and now that scandal threatens them both he has no choice but to offer her marriage. But what will happen when the full moon rises over London, and Rosalind discovers exactly what type of man she's fallen in love with? And as for Lord Wulf, what happens when a man destined by a curse to never love fully finds himself heading in that direction-even though he's vowed to never allow his heart to rule his emotions? As mysterious happenings surround Armond and Rosalind, as their hearts move ever closer to a full unity, and as the full moon approaches, you'll never guess of the surprises that are in store for you.
Ronda Thompson has created a delightful new series with her Wulf family, and I for one can't wait to see which brother will be featured next. Set in 1800's London, THE DARK ONE is a romantic paranormal romp that's sure to delight readers of the genre. Kudos to Ms. Thompson for this unique and exciting new series!

This the way the world ends..........2007-07-21
... not with a bang, but a great sucking sound. This is the last volume in the 13 clan series set in the World of Darkness, home to the Vampire the Masquerade role playing system. Stewart Wieck is a great author who is intimately involved with the VTM system. This last novel answers many questions, but raises many more, tying together many storylines, and leaving plenty of room for creative/malevolent storytellers to draw their own conclusions on the fate of the bloodsuckers.
If you are just beginning this series, don't read this one first, but it is possible to read it out of order.
Looking through the eyes of a Prophet ..........2003-05-12
Knowing this book was about a clan known for their mental instability, I approached it with more of an open mind and with a larger reserve of tolerance and patience. Unlike the book 'Catcher in the Rye', I made it through to the conclusion of this story. The entire story follows the disjointed musings of the Prophet of Gehenna as he goes from one place to another in search of something even he doesn't truly know. Often times the same scene will be replayed from a different perspective to lend a more understandable vision of what has transpired within the story. If these weren't included, I doubt I would've had the literary fortitude to complete the book. If it were the author's intent to illustrate the World of Darkness through the stereotypical perception of a Malkavian who is also held captive by his own prophetic visions, then it was a well articulated piece of work. There's really no other way to come away from this book with anything less than a feeling of total confusion.
If anything, reading this book will challenge your ability to decipher prophecy and translate that which is not communicated with a commonly expected level of elucidation.
If you are looking for a straight-forward ...the commonly expected plot, action, and demonstration of WoD mechanics, et cetera - than you might want to take a look at Clanbook:Malkavian FIRST before reading Clan Novel:Malkavian.
If you understand, accept, and actually favour the inner workings of the Malkavian mind - get this book.
Malkavian- a clan that should be admired only for this..........2002-02-13
Some would say that the book was hard to follow, hard to understand, page after page o nothing but jibberish. The takes of a Malk in the eyes of a Malk is not something that most people can follow. It is a bit hard to understand the point of an entire series, each clan book was seperated so greatly by the first persons ideals and prioroties, and while it is widely known to any one who has taken any research into this series of clans that the Malkavian clan is the most misunderstood. Why would the author protray them as anything else. I personally found the ideas and stream of consiousness intriguing and sometimes find myself with the same thoughts and ideation. The character telling the story never really seems to be the main character, just someone who understands the main character and the greatness of Anatole. If the story were told by Anatole it would be a waste of time completely, though i like the author using someone else, who is never really an active participant, just someone who is there to experience the events and can translate them into somewhat more thought out terms, than perhaps someone at Anatoles point of veiw could express. This content of this book is very metaphorical, so just try to think in terms of symbolism if you don't already know the whole background. This is a book that you either think about or ignore. But if you really have no understanding of the clan Malkavian it would probably just be a waste of time to read this book so don't even bother to buy the book. But if you want to hear a delusional person's explanation of a schizophrenic, go ahead and keep reading.
I was really looking forward to this book.......2001-08-11
but after only 18 pages, I had to give up. I love clan Malkavian, mostly because it is a rare person who can truly play one. A subtle clan to comprehend. I saw only one great Malk character in the novels so far, and he got killed in the first book (which tells me it's a rare author who can truly write a Malkavian). But this story is told in first person, which breaks the entire feel of the series, and of course, the teller is a mad man. I couldn't understand what he was talking about, or even how one sentence related to the next. Such an incomprehendable waste.
Sadness... not Madness.......2001-05-08
As I feared after finishing the Horribly written First Novel in this lamentable series, Clan Novel Malkavian is even WORSE than Wieck's first foray (Clan Novel Toreador). This book is completely incomprehendable. The style is neither clever, nor insightful... it's just BAD. This may very well be the single worst book I have ever had the displeasure to read.
The saddest part of this is that, in general, I had begun to enjoy this series. Parts 4 and 8 by Kathleen Ryan rose to such heights of excellence that I had hoped (vainly) that there was finally some plot to this plodding embarrassment of a series... Alas... it seems I was wrong.

Customer Reviews:
An interesting book about a poorly understood subject.......2004-12-09
Thias book speaks to people who rely on achievements to make them feel good and explains why they experience anxiety. It comes down to a poor sense of "self." I have read a lot of this information in other books, but I believe the author makes his points clearly and adds value on this topic.
Extremely Worthwhile and Helpful Book.......2004-10-31
This book is very helpful, and many chapters are exceptional, particularly Image Love and Relationships, Exceptional Mediocrity, Meaning and Joy, and Balancing Work and Life. The way each chapter is introduced, the use of specific human examples, the questions provided to enable the reader to explore the depth of his or her own problem, and the suggestions offered for conquering performance addiction are superb. The realistic tools provided at the end of the book to enable the reader to assess progress in conquering this addiction are most useful.
Hope and insight for many who are driven to perform.......2004-10-07
Dr Ciaramicoli speaks with clarity and compassion and makes the 'syndrome' very understandable. Using the subjects in his practice as examples, I could easily identify with aspects of their driven nature. He makes a strong statement about why we feel compelled to maintain this compulsive lifestyle. Still, it was written not to sound like some dreaded character flaw but a general trend in our society that is creeping into the fabric of our cultural belief system. He offers us hope and insight into how we can better slow down and enjoy our lives and ourselves.
Life with Balance.......2004-10-06
For a long time now I have been looking for a way to balance my life. With the constant demands I place on myself to have more, be more and to be perfct I thought I would burst. I have felt this way pretty much all my life, but have never been able to pinpoint the reason. I saw Dr. Ciaramicoli on Good Morning America and everything became clear. I ordered the book and really felt it put my life in perspective. I sincerely thank Dr. Ciaramicoli for helping me to finally live my life with balance.
A Model Under Pressure.......2004-10-06
I have been working as a model for 6 years. My life is extremely pressured, I am always trying to perfect my work, my body and my children seem to never accomplish the way I would. When I saw Dr. Ciaramicoli on Good Morning America, I could not believe the story told by one of his clients. She could be my sister. I got the book last night and read it through till 2am. This book is my savior, a guide to change relentless demands I place on myself and those close to me. I never realized why I have such difficulty parenting and loving. The Chapters on Image Love and Performance Addiction and Parenting make so much sense. I wish I had read this book earlier but hopefully it is not too late for me to change the course of my life. I know I drive people close to me crazy, now at least a have a map to help me to relate better and work with less intensity.
