Book Description

It is a tale of two cities--the legendary duel between haughty, democratic Athens and brutal, unbeaten Sparta. After seven years of bloody conflict, a barren island in a remote corner of Greece becomes the stage for what promises to become a second Thermopylae. Four hundred Spartan soldiers are cut off by enemy ships on a narrow strip of land, starving, without supplies, yet sworn to uphold their indomitable heritage. Meanwhile, all around them, the powerful Athenian Navy masses for the inevitable assault.

As the war of nerves wears on, Spartan nobles and Athenian demagogues maneuver in the background--and two estranged Spartan brothers serve together for the first time. The eldest, Antalcidas, is a legendary warrior hobbled by a damaging secret. His brother Epitadas is envied, popular, and cruel. Together they must overcome a lifetime of hostility to survive the battle of their lives.

3 out of 5 stars A good effort but..........2007-10-02

Unfortunately I don't think Nicastro really presents us with anything new. If he does, it is in the interactions between Spartans and helots, which are largely undocumented and, where examples exist, bias casts a strong shadow. The affection bewteen Antalcidas and Doulos was nice, as well as the moral issues presented when the Messenians tried to liberate some of their fellow countrymen on the island, mistakenly killing them in the process. My real gripe with Nicastro is that he didn't show us anything we didn't already know. I suppose, for someone not as well-versed in Greek history, this would be an exciting story with a suspenseful ending. However, I suppose I expected a bit more: more insight into the character of Epitadas and Antalcidas; more politics perhaps, or maybe just a more focused story that didn't seem to jump forward and back in time. It is confusing when, in Book II, we jump forward 30 years, to introduce the setting of Sphacteria, before coming back to the Rearing. The confusing sense of time and the lack of depth made this book stand out as an example of lackluster historical fiction. Also, the details of the earthquake's immediate aftermath, as well as some discussion of the future would have been welcome. Nicastro takes a great story and retells it, just not well enough for my taste. Gates of Fire is a far superior book about the Spartan Rearing and their view on war.

5 out of 5 stars Not Duke Wayne at Thermopylae.......2007-09-22

I love good fiction the more believable it is. I love authors who respect my intelligence, but don't write like they're trying to overpower me with theirs. I love ANY book, or any other form of entertainment for that matter, that entertains me while taking me out of all the usual ruts.
This book does all that, and much, much more. After exhausting Mary Renault's books, I've been been waiting for an author to take her place.
Nicastro has my vote.

4 out of 5 stars A Novel of Ancient Sparta.......2007-09-17

This is the first book that I have read by the author and I enjoyed it very much. I love books on ancient history, both fact and fiction so I suppose I am a little biased in that respect. The book is a story of two cities on the Greek mainland. The city of Athens, home to some of the finest minds and the finest writers of the period and the fierce and unbeaten Sparta.

The book tells the story of four hundred Spartan soldiers who are cut off by Athenian ships on a narrow strip of land. Although they are almost starving and have no hope of receiving any supplies, they vow to uphold their tradition as warriors and never give in. Meanwhile the Athenian navy make ready for the inevitable assault . . .

It's very very very rare that I don't finish a book. I did not finish this book. The story drags on and on and on. This is truly a bore and one to pass up. There's other books out there that deal with ancient Sparta that are much better reads.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid images from history.......2007-06-12

The fact that the reviews of this book are all over the place says it all. "Isle of Stone" is the kind of novel that divides people. I think it is because Nicastro writes without compromising his vision, without trying give certain readers what he thinks they want. He doesn't give you a nice battle scene every twenty pages. He doesn't care if you like his characters, any more than real people particularly care if you like them. (For the record, I found the story of Damatria and Antalcidas very noble and very sad.) No argument here: if you're looking for propaganda about comic book Spartans, look elsewhere. If you want something like the truth, backed up by intense research, this should be your choice.

5 out of 5 stars "Fool Me Twice...You're Dead...".......2005-07-27

As FOOL ME TWICE opens we see Paul Levine's ex-Miami Dolphin now Attorney Jake Lassiter in a new role as uncle to his half-sister's abandoned teenage son, Kip, who has been delivered into his hands by the Juvenile Justice system after an indiscretion involving spray-paint.

Jake struggles with parenting Kip, who is a kind of walking "Leonard Maltin's Guide To The Movies." As he adjusts to having a teenager in the house he is also defending the grifter Luis "Blinky" Baroso against a fraud charge. When a grateful Baroso is found Not Guilty he pays Jake in stock certificates from Rocky Mountain Treasures, Inc. Figuring that the stocks are so much worthless paper, Jake puts them aside, and turns his attention to Jo Jo Baroso, Luis' sister, and one of the most dynamic prosecutors in Dade County.

Strange things begin to happen. Kyle Hornbeck, one of the partners in Rocky Mountain Treasures is found dangling from Jake's ceiling fan, and Blinky Baroso vanishes, leaving nothing but a puddle of blood in Jake's vicinity.

Indicted for the dual murders of Hornbeck and (Sr.) Baroso, Jake discovers that Blinky Baroso conned him---and that he is the remaining Florida shareholder of Rocky Mountain Treasures, apparently very much a liquid company. Motive is everything.

Deciding that a strong offense is the best defense, Jake loads Kip into his 1968 442 canary yellow Olds and roars off to Aspen to confront one Mr. K.C. Cimarron, the brains behind Rocky Mountain Treasures, a self-proclaimed scion of the Old West who settles his disputes with a nail gun. Suffice it to say that Jake soon finds himself on trial for murder in Colorado as well.

FOOL ME TWICE is a humorous fast-paced story that has some creative plot twists and a classically O. Henry ending. As with MORTAL SIN, Levine has finally defined the essential Jake Lassiter in these pages. The sixth of thus far seven novels in the series, FOOL ME TWICE comes very highly recommended.

Malaysia and Indonesia are biggest Islamic Countries in the World. Islamic army have never reached to these far lands. Islam has spread there through good practices of Muslim business men. And islam now is fastest growing religion in the USA and the whole world despite of constant attack of western media and crusaders.
      Thank you.

      5 out of 5 stars Unvarnished Scoop.......2007-10-04

The Sword of the Prophet gives an unvarnished look at Islam by means of its history. We see its foundations, its unifying spirit but also its sects and factions, its periods of expansion and of decay, its theology and the cultures it forms. Trifcovic also shows Islam's disdain for values of the modern West: tolerance, personal freedom, individualism, competition, non-violence, progress, and the like.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-03-31

This book draws on a huge wealth of history about Islam and Muhammad. The historical references speak for themselves as to a "religion of peace" which cannot be legitimately claimed for either Muhammad or Islam. Anyone interested in historical accuracy and truth needs to read this book. It will not be possible to have a dialogue with adherents to Islam until the historical record as presented by Trifkovic - and others - becomes accepted.
It is unfortunate that defenders of Islam and Muhammad - Islamic and non-Islamic - refuse to acknowledge the Islamic past of slaughter, rape, pillage and enslavement. In the West, millions and millions of pages and tens of thousands of scholars have detailed the history of Western Civilization, with all its warts, wars, advances and discoveries. Yet attempts to explore the history of Islam are too often met with anger, denial, threats and outright lies. Why? As the great Bernard Lewis has said, because of opposition to the truth, it is difficult for an academic to pursue topics such as Islamic racism and slavery.
This book goes a long way in shedding light on a very unsavory past. Muslims and Islamophiles need to admit it.
I have a few quarrels with the methods or lack thereof with sourcing. Footnotes need to be done more correctly and statements in the text need to be referenced more fully.
Head and shoulders above his Defeating Jihad.

Excellent book for seeing the islam that some like to ignore, or even rationalize for. this book will open your eyes and you will lose sleep when the reality of islams role in the world becomes clear. The beliefs of islam the media and the muslims will not tell you about. You will not be able to stop looking into the history and current state of islam after reading this. Some are happy to walk around blindly, so be warned once your eyes are open there's no going back to your old comfort zone. and very well documented, i suggest find a web site that has an english koran to read for yourself the passages cited in trifkovics' book. once your done reading be sure to pass this book on to a friend or relative.

5 out of 5 stars A brief overview of Islam.......2006-09-28

Robert McNamara, while being interviewed on TV in the wake of the attack on mainland America, said that one of the big mistakes we made in Vietnam was that we didn't understand the Vietnamese and they didn't understand us.

We will never forget September 11, 2001. For most of us it was our first experience in what another commentator called `in-your-face terrorism.'

Now, we need to understand why we were attacked. We need to understand the history and motivation of our enemies. We need to understand why there is an insurrection in Iraq. We need to understand the historical and religious background of our friends in the Islamic World.

"The Sword of the Prophet" is an excellent place to begin a journey of understanding. It was published in 1973 and begins explosively with the so-called `Yom Kippur' war. In his introduction, Goldston tells us (a bit too optimistically, I'm afraid):

"As Americans, under the pressure of urgent necessity, took a new look at the Arab world, the fog of prejudice began to lift from a colorful, noble, and fascinating historical landscape. In that landscape they could discern the real meaning of many hitherto puzzling movements and events---and in it too they could find the roots of much that was vital in their own past. For the history of Islam, it turned out, was an integral part of the heritage of all peoples, a part of the human story that had its origins in remote and even legendary times..."

If you didn't read "Sword of the Prophet" back when it was first published, there is still time to do so. Since this is a brief, 211-page book, the author of necessity presents a very panoramic view of the beginnings of Islam and how it became such a unifying force---a little more than a hundred years after the time of Mohammed, the Arabs created an empire that stretched from the Pyrenees to the Himalayas. They didn't relinquish the last of their strongholds in Spain until 1492. Their armies were still hammering at the gates of Vienna in 1683.

How Islam conquered its enemies and why, the rise and fall of a succession of Islamic empires, and the causes of Islam's fiery reawakening after World War II are all vividly and succinctly presented in "The Sword of the Prophet."

Americans who want to understand the difficulties of our crusade against Osama bin Laden should read Goldston's (very brief) account of the Hashashin and the Old Man of the Mountains.

A story in the tradition of the Conan series, only without the "Barbarian" added to the hero's name.
Disgraced in the war , Yourdon is forced to make a new life for himself. After being exiled by his own father, fallen to drinking and then saved in extremis by allying himself with a merchant, Yourdon finally finds a new job: mercenary bodyguard. A series of assignements end up with an accusation of murder against his liege, a self made prophet. Yourdon gets saved then revenges himself.
Very good technique, no surprises, no clear ending... And no sword of the prophets that I could read about in the whole book.
Where's the sword? Was there any sword? What's the catch??

      Or is there any?....

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN YOURDON AND TASIA IS ONLY PART OF WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK AS GOOD AS IT IS. IT REMINDS ME OF THE SHANNARA SERIES IN THE WAY THAT YOURDON MUST NOT ONLY COME TO GRIPS WITH THE POWER WITHIN HIMSELF BUT WITH HIS FATE AS WELL.

This book is one of the best I've read in a while. The interplay between Yourdon and Tasia made a great sub-plot, reminds me of when me and my fiance first met. Will there be a sequel? A very good fantasy novel. I highly recomend it.

        Book Description

It is the year 8729. Man has spread himself throughout much of the cosmos; conquered innumerable new star-systems and converted their worlds to his exploitation. In the doing of it, however, there has been war; a war that is only now coming to an end after raging for a thousand years. On Avalon, a pristine, Earth-like planet that was once a mining concern, the old colonists that were abandoned there at the onset of the war, have changed. Having been cut off from the empire of man for a thousand years, they have all but forgotten their original roots and purpose. They've gone back to the land; back to an iron-age, near-barbaric existence, and they now harbor a dark secret among them; the fantastic results of sins that were committed long ago.
This secret holds the power to forever alter humankind as a species.

5 out of 5 stars strong outer space society tale.......2003-10-01

Avalon was settled by miners but war cut off the planet from the rest of the empire. In the year 8729 AD the empire has returned to Avalon only to find the inhabitants have devolved into hunting and gathering tribes. The empire plans to leave as their prime belief is not to teach advanced technology to primitives.

The empire's first imperial ranger hopes to retire and make his home on this beautiful paradise. From the planet Sparta he buys a slave warrior Beda-Loo and upon her arrival, he frees her in the hopes that she will want to make a life with him here. Beda-Loo quickly realizes that Jake is an honorable warrior and decides to stay with him as his mate. The tribes accept them as true Avalonians. However, their peaceful way of life is threatened by a rival tribe led by a renegade who cold bloodedly killed the leader. He intends to take control of all the tribes but Jake and Beda-Loo plan to stop him. They also intend to keep secret the truth about Avalon that if known will destroy this unique planet.

The hero of this book is an honorable, moralistic warrior with a kind heart who sees what must be done and does it. His wife is his equal in every sense of the word and when she learns the secret of Avalon she too wants to protect it from outsiders who will want to exploit the natives. S. Roy L. Hawkins is a gifted storyteller whose innovative ideas inside a strong plot captivate readers who can only dream of traveling to Avalon.

                  Book Description

An expert in father-daughter relationships shows daughters how to forge a new path to communication with their fathers

Psychologist Linda Nielsen shows readers how every daughter can transform her relationship with her father--if she is willing to be the adult who does the emotional embracing rather than the angry, hurt little girl waiting for Daddy to embrace her. Based on her popular Fathers and Daughters course--the first in the country devoted to exploring father-daughter relationships--Nielsen shows every woman how to:

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent teacher's book.......2007-09-18

The book is addressed to daughters who miss their fathers, physically, emotionally etc. But I gained a lot of insights on what daughters really expect and miss from fathers. Dr.Nielson takes the reader through a human development cycle on how much daughters can give their fathers in terms of love and opportunities to learn, grow and become better human beings, and contribute to family solidarity through empathy. Dr.Nielson advocates a "voluntarist" conception of love. A great departure from screaming "what's in it for me?" That is not to say that she discounts reciprocity in relationships.

The context addressed is set in the US culture of the post 1960 decades. However, the basic motivations are applicable universally. I have lived in the US among young people for over 12 years as a student and as a Univ Faculty. Now, in India I perceive the same problems and the message that parents have even more to learn through interaction with their children. The emphasis on daughters adds more emotional content and nuances to the discourse. I would observe that most of the problems and solutions discussed in the book apply equally well to sons.

There is an elemental message that runs through the book. It urges parents to come out of their pre-conceived roles, inhibitions and relate directly one to one with their children. It echoes TSElliot's view that a cultural role is only a formal outcome of fundamental motivations and rationale`. We will be better off looking for those fundamental rationale` instead of assuming roles and be mere consumers.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2007-08-20

The author understands the intricacies of modern, father-daughter relationships and helps a daughter to understand, and emotionally embrace, this person people call "father". The author takes a woman, who is desiring to have a relationship with her father, through an enlightening journey of discovery of her own feelings and thoughts, and those of her father. It is obvious that the author understands her subject matter and basic human nature. The insights that the author leads us to are nothing short of amazing! If you read this book and are unchanged, demand your money back and check with the morgue to see if you're still breathing.

5 out of 5 stars excellent with real data to back it up.......2004-06-06

This book is the most insightful, rewarding book I have read in years. Dr. Nielsen unfolds and unlocks real information in a format that you can grasp and apply. It should be a required read for every female, even if she has a good relationship with her father or her father has passed. Pure unlightenment and understanding ~ that is what you walk away with after reading this book. It was very, very helpful to understand more completely the demeaning and demoralizing of divorced fathers. I believe this is a real issue in today's world and she addresses it head on. I would love to see a book by this title from Dr. Nielsen. What a gift to the world that book would be! I hope to see Dr. Nielsen on Oprah and Dr. Phil promoting her book very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Awesome.......2004-05-28

Taking time out to read this book has been a blessing to my life and so many of my sisters. We are single mothers who have been divorced and raising girls on our own. The importance of relationships with our daughters and their fathers is essential and Dr. Nielsen did a wonderful job making the interactions realistic and meaningful. I would recommend this book to all of my african american sisters who often times need alittle help from the fathers of their daughters. Thank you Dr. Neilsen for your caring enough to give us sisters a hand at mending and reintiating father-daughter relationships. I can't wait to read more!

                  5 out of 5 stars It's Never Too Late.......2004-05-18

A wonderful relationship with your father is truly one of life's greatest joys. But how can we find this if we don't already have it? Dr. Nielsen's book provides many practical and creative suggestions for doing just this. We did not choose our father or the life we had as a child. However, we can choose to change the way we interact with our dad once we are adults. Dr. Nielsen uses a variety of interesting techniques: short questionnairss to focus on specific problems; "Eye Opener" research summaries to provide perspective; and sample dialogues to help us get started talking with our dad. Dr. Nielsen's academic credentials give her the credibility to write this ground-breaking book. And her warm, encouraging voice and helpful ideas give us the courage to actually try to reconnect with our dad. I am recommending this book to all of my friends who are puzzled, angry, or disappointed with their father. It's never too early, or too late, to start.
