Compelled to rescue Lilian from danger, Ambrose races to Egypt, where, among Cairo's labyrinthine streets, he uncovers unspeakable evil...

Ambivalent.......2007-01-12
I would have enjoyed it much more it hadn't been bogged down beneath so much description and interspection. People who enjoy the "literary" style of writing may well like it. The story is good, but I prefer a little faster pace.
Edwardian Mystery.......2005-12-21
I just finished reading this book and loved it. Although I usually avoid the "letter" format books, this one worked very well. The story, set in mid-1800's, has a no nonsense feel to it and while romantic isn't silly. The parts of the book set in Egypt appealed to me and reminded me of the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters. Finally, while I had heard of the slavery issue in England of the time, I am now intrigued enough to do a little research of my own. This book is worthy of the time spent reading it.
terrific late Regency thriller.......2005-09-07
In 1830 seventeen years old heiress Lady Lilian Westmorland enjoyed her country life in West Coventry, England in spite of her late father's scandal though currently she mourns the death of her mother. Lili especially loves to ride however a near fatal riding accident leaves her unconscious and the horse had to be killed. While recovering from her severe injuries, her guardian Micah. Overbury allegedly considering the cool weather decides that the warmth of Egypt will help his niece heal faster.
However, Lord Ambrose Malfine learns that the daughter Lilian of his childhood friend was involved in other incidents besides the equine spill. As he assesses what he learns, he concludes too many coincidences and wonders if someone wants her dead so he takes it upon as a token of his high regard for her father to travel to Egypt to see her safe. Ambrose will soon find himself in Cairo battling evil English slave traders with the stake being Lilian's freedom.
The sequel to LET THERE BE BLOOD is a terrific late Regency thriller that starts with a superb opening as Ambrose explains why he has an Egyptian coffin in his English home and never slows down until his final confrontation with. a malevolent being. The story line is fast-paced, but provides a deep look at early nineteenth century Egypt especially Cairo. Ambrose is terrific as he heroically tries to keep the daughter of his late friend safe though she is the target of some nasty individuals. Joy to Jane Jakeman for providing a terrific historical tale.

Book Description
Faulkner's authoritative English translation of Middle Kingdom coffin texts is essential for all Egyptologists. This new edition reprints his whole work in one volume. Filling the gap between the `Pyramid' texts and the New Kingdom Book of the Dead, these writings were intended to supply the deceased with the speeches he would need to achieve a secure and important position in the next world. As such they supply valuable insights into Egyptian beliefs and mortuary practices. Concise textual notes are kept to a minimum, allowing the character of the texts to be experienced as a whole. Indexes cover divinities, localities, celestial bodies, selected Egyptian words in translation and also the parts of boats and sailing gear that figure prominently in some spells.

Bridges the gap........2006-07-30
This is an essential book by Faulkner, and very convenient by combining three separate volumes into one in this edition. I've finished the Pyramid Texts, Book of the Dead, and the Mythical Origin of the Egyptian Temple by E.A.E. Reymond, which is a cosmogonical overview of the Edfu temple inscriptions. This much more follows the form of the Pyramid Text writing style, and fills in many gaps about their religion. Any Egyptologist would benefit from the read, which will take a while.
Hi,Can anyone please tell me more about this books as far as.......2001-10-02

A GREAT TRANSLATION OF A GREAT FUNERARY CORPUS.......2000-11-26
There are not words to praise late Dr. Faulkner for the impressive task he had undetook at translating the 7 volumes of the "editio princeps" of the valuable Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts, like he had already done with the Pyramid Texts in 1969. Anybody interested in ancient Egyptian religion and funerary literature must own a copy of this edition, whether under this "omnibus edition, 3 vols. in 1", or the extended edition in 3 vols. MOreover, a new reprint of the same is badly in need for it is very difficulto to find it at hand. So that you known: if you have the chance, and you are looking for an authoritative, researched and scholarly translation: THIS IS THE TITLE YOU MUST OWN1
Too good to be.......2000-08-23

Book Description
In the suburbs of Washington a secret is lurking. Everyone notices that Sam Johanek, a weapons analyst with a top-secret clearance, is changing. He exhibits peculiar mood swings, weird food preferences and a bizarre case of amnesia. No one suspects that Sam is battling a recurring nightmare and a scary obsession with his Basenji dog. In fear for his well being, Sam's wife contacts an inexperienced psychologist. Series of events follow, that take the readers on a trip, from Egypt's Valley of the Kings to the jungles of Gabon, where hides the oldest secret of the ancient Egyptians. As time runs out for Sam, his fate rests in the hands of three people destined to uncover the 'The Basenji Revelation.' Find out why the Midwest Book Review calls this book "...an action packed thriller that will have readers white knuckled and holding their breath...try not to read it with the lights off," and why The Gothic Revue says "...it gave me the shivers."
Customer Reviews:
Compelling, Intriguing, and Well Worth the Time!.......2007-04-10
The Basenji Revelation is an exceptional book. The horror portion of the book is genuinely scary. The author uses a combination of heart-pumping
action scenes, mythological references, and rich vocabulary to make the reader feel each action of the protagonist. An example is the nightmare Maggie has right before her husband lapses into his first public display of madness. For me, this episode remains one of the rare, truly frightening pieces of literature I've personally read. However, horror was not the only thing that attracted me to this book. I've been toying with the idea of getting a basenji breed for about a year. I
wanted to learn more of this particular breed, especially about its origin. When I searched online, I found good information on Wikipedia and there I read about Simon Cleveland's book. The book is rich with historical and mythological details about the breed and its link to the Egyptian culture and religion. What's really fascinating is how the author links modern society with the ancient people. In the character of Sam he reveals more than just a burnt out workaholic with mental issues. Sam is a product of the impacts of modern technology and cultural values. The wife's character, Maggie, symbolizes the natural human response to mental illness, mainly the desire to help and the confusion or lack of knowledge on how to achieve that. The book never failed to entertain me. The end is probably what I found the most compelling. It suggests much greater symbolic meaning to the book than the dramatic conclusion and I think that any reader would be impressed with it.
I thought it was amazing.......2006-06-16
I can still hear the call of the Basenji. I have a basenji in fact. No wonder it's called the barkless dog, it sounds like a female crying. This book gives a new meaning to mythological horror. It's both a contemporary mystery and psychological thriller, except it has a fully developed historical research to tie it nicely to the overall story. Before I bought it I read one of the reviews below that said something like: Try not to read it with the lights off and something about giving you the shivers. Both are very true. In one of the scenes where the psychologist is alone with the Basenji in the middle of the night, boy it freaked me out. Does anyone know anything about the Rosetta stone? Are the creature's phrases really based on the Demotic and Coptic languages from the ancient Egypt? Wow, what a book.
Hungry for horror in the style of 'The Mummy'? Look out King.......2006-06-03
This is one of the best books I've read in a while. The story seizes you immediately from the start and before you know it, you're turning the last page. This author has a wild imagination, that's for sure. There's a fully developed horror story around a 6,000 year-old Egyptian deity and the final revelation made the heirs on the back of my neck stand.
The way he explains some of the scenes, I felt as if I was part of the action. Definitely gets a high score in my book.
reader from pa.......2006-04-14
I found this book an intruiging read. I disagree with another reader about giving the breed a bad name. I own a basenji myself, and anyone that owns or has been around them knows they're sweet, clever, silly little dogs. I don't think any less of St. Bernards because of "Cujo".
Powerful symbolism - frightful yet thought provoking.......2006-02-09
There are few books written in the horror genre that deserve special attention. These are the treasures that possess both the power to frighten and the capacity to compel by responding to the reader's expectations and fears. The Basenji Revelation is one of these rare treasures. Simon Cleveland had fashioned a powerful drama, which although supernatural in its core never escapes actual human reality. The story is quite interesting. It combines elements of both the mythical and the modern as it charms the readers with a rich history. In the end, the author's message goes beyond the unexplained. It leaps forward in search of the symbolic nature of the super human - the one who ultimately becomes aware of all life's mysteries. And it is this leap forward that transitions the Basenji Revelation out of the routine realm of horror and marries it with the one of magical realism. A very, very good read indeed.

Book Description
The present volume is the long-awaited concordance of the Egyptian coffin texts. It forms the sequel to A Hieroglyphic Dictionary of Egyptian Coffin Texts by the same author. In 1961 A. de Buck published his important seven-volume corpus Egyptian Coffin Texts. The importance of these texts is considerable for a variety of reasons; they are one of the most important literary texts of classical Egypt; the many variants greatly enlarge our understanding of grammar and linguistic structures; the coffin texts are magical texts, the effectiveness of which depended upon the exact reproductions of the original spells.
In this concordance the various readings of each lemma are provided in transliteration into the Latin alphabet, which makes the concordance easily accessible for those unable to read hieroglyphs. The material is divided into the morphological categories of the verb; within each category the verbs are treated in alphabetical order.
Readership: All those interested in the Egyptian Coffin Texts, Egyptian lexicography and grammar and Old Testament scholars.

Book Description
The bizarre killing of Miss Pak should have belonged to the Korean police. But her amorous associations with American servicemen in Seoul also made her death the business of the U.S. Army's criminal investigation arm, of which Sgt. Ernie Bascom and Sgt. George Sueno were prized digits.
George is from East L.A., Ernie is from another planet. In the army, going after the truth is usually seen as a criminal waste of time, so they are well suited to the case. The Eighth Army command is anxious only to squelch the bad press, and the boys are really only interested in enjoying their tour of duty. The two of them know Korea, they like Korea (George even speaks the language), and they are all too happy to check the tawdry dives the woman had trawled for customers. Even if they don't find the perpetrator, the consequences are minimal.
There is something odd about the Korean cops' nervousness. Also, the actual killing is pretty heinous; the oddly trussed-up victim is little more than a youngster. Nobody can't die but there are ways no one should. The case gets to George and Ernie. They even work on it after hours. In their line, though, getting involved with a victim isn't smart because you increase tremendously the odds of becoming one.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Mystery Writer Going.......2005-09-07
Ignore PW. The New York Times rated this book as one of their Notable Books of 1992, a rare acheivement, especially for a first time mystery writer. Martin Limon is one of the few writers I go out of my way to find. He is so good at capturing the Korean culture, the military culture and the way the two cultures affect each other that you feel that you served a tour of duty in 1970s Korea yourself. The mystery and the characters are wonderful, too.
Don't believe Publisher's Weekly.....this is far better than they indicate.......2005-07-23
This is a simply fantastic novel!! Noir, dark and darkly humorous, gritty, seedy, pulsing with human vice and need, and chock-full of knuckle-dusting action, gun fire, and labyrinthine mystery. The story line revolves about two men, military detectives, investigating the steaming underbelly of the local black market Korean/American military economy and the concurrent trade in prostitution, despite the endearing fact that they themselves are active and daily participants in the party. The characterization in Jade Lady Burning is superb, authenticity in setting and detail perfect, the action is exciting, the characters memorable, the story and plot excellent.
To this day I find it mind-boggling that this book and author have been so completely overlooked by both the publishing mainstream and the general readership. There are few delights more enjoyable that stumbling upon a book and author you have never heard of that is so wonderful, enjoyable, and captivating that it catapaults straight to your all-time favorite lists. Finding and reading this book was a revelatory experience like waking in July to Christmas morning, or finding an overlooked bottle of stupendous, world-class wine and buying the entire stock of six cases for $12 a bottle (Yamhill Valley 96 Pinot in case anyone is interested.) Yet books like this should be shared and savored by all.
Despite the puzzling lack of popular acclaim, this book is easily one of my favorite reads. I found it in the public library seven or eight years ago, devoured it, and then went on to read his next two as quickly as possible. What a thrill ride! Since then I have been disappointed that the author, Martin Limon, has not published any other novels....so imagine my surprise and delight when I see on Amazon today that he has a new one arriving in a month. I just pre-ordered mine. With the advent of his new novel perhaps Mr. Limon will win the attention and readership he deserves. I hope so, and to that end, I share with my fellow readers why this book is so darn good and why, if his upcoming book is in the same vein, that it deserves to be on the bestseller lists.
In Jade Lady Burning Mr. Limon introduces us to his protagonists, Ernie Bascom and George Sueno, military investigators stationed in Korea in the seventies. I am a sucker for complex characters that are vividly brought to life, who struggle through thorny and complicated moral situations, and who grow throughout the novel as their basic humanity is challenged by the assaults life throws at them. Mr. Limon delivers in spades with these two likeable rogues in the characterization department. Even more impressive is his command of setting and atmosphere. His depictation of Korea, a byzantine and complicated place with differing social mores, expectations, values, and outlooks, is spot on and he captures perfectly the soupy, complicated moral morass than can come about when two cultures meet and try to function side-by-side.....particularly when one of the cultures is represented by an occupying military force, with it's own needs, vices, social structures, and attitudes.
The Publishers Weekly review dings this book for a "strangely, leisurely pace"; I never criticize other reviews because I know how hard they are to write, but I believe this remark completely undermines this novel and is representative itself of those differing cultural outlooks I referenced above. This book is set in Asia, and in Korea in particular. Life moves at a more languid pace there than in America and matters of custom are sometimes more important than matters of truth, which Ernie and George themselves so often discover in the course of their investigation. The fact that the author could make the novel move at a Korean pace was a brilliant bit of writing that makes the setting absolutely believable. I actually feel like I am back in Korea as I read his novels; his spare yet hauntingly evocative writing is that good. Despite the ding, my belief is the Korean characters should act like Koreans, and more over, Ernie and George should act like what they are, two soldiers stationed in Asia, with access to a Disneyland of earthly delights but yet with some nominal duty to police it so that while the army can blow off steam, nothing gets out of control. Mr. Limon does exactly that and it is the friction and differences between the cultures that drive this novel so convincingly and make it so enjoyable. Order this book folks and treat yourself to a rare read.
Wonderfully written, darkly funny, absorbing read-.......2002-08-23
One of the best of the genre I've ever read. The setting, an army base in Korea in the 70's, comes alive through Limon's deft descriptions. Feels like noir. Dark winter atmosphere, desperate characters and unexpected humor. You pull for the "good guys" even though they're not so likable.
I usually sell my old mysteries to the used book store--not this one. This one I keep.
well written.......2001-06-22
This is one of the better books i've read recently. For any military or ex-military personnel who have been to korea, this book will most likely bring back vivid memories of the experience. A difficult place to put into words, Martin Limon acurately describes the way life is over there as far as the american military experience is concerned. Beyond that is also a well thought out and written story that should keep any reader of detective novels very interested. I highly recommend this book as well as "slicky boys".
Intriguing story full of culture and suspense.......2000-10-13
This is one of the more original mysteries I have read. As a foreigner who has lived in Korea for three years, I still learned a thing or two from the author reading this book and enjoyed hearing about the dark side of Korea. Although presently things have really changed since the timing of the book, I still walked around Itaewon afterwards and spotted some of the places Limon had mentioned. You also end up having a love-hate relationship with the main character, he obviously feels bad for the prostitutes he comes in contact with and seems to care for their welfare, but yet doesn't mind going into a whorehouse for a quick screw and every woman he comes into contact with, whether a working girl or not, is quickly rated on her appearence. The main character also seems to carry around a lot of the stereotypical attitudes military men here seem to have, but yet he also has learned to immerse himself in the culture and language and seems to have great respect for Korea. I will look forward to reading the next two books by this author, and recommend this to anyone who likes suspense and intrigue mixed in with an exotic background.

Book Description
Heavy footsteps stomped toward Zon. He glanced around quickly, biting his lip. Menaj! Where could he hide? He tossed the bag of spiders onto the display case, tiptoeing quickly toward the dark hallway at the rear of the store. "Hey! Stop!" Clayton called. Panicking, Zon sped into the hallway. Two dimly-lit doors stood side by side on his left. "You little wuss!" Clayton shouted. "Let me flatten your nose." Quickly, Zon pushed the farthest door open. Maybe it led outside. Oh no! It was a bathroom. The door banged shut behind him. "I got you now!" Clayton yelled from the hallway. Zon looked around wildly. How could he escape? There! A window was open in back of one of the stalls. He rushed into the stall, locked the door, and stood on the toilet seat, reaching for the window. The outer door squeaked open suddenly. Zon crouched on the toilet seat, holding his breath. "What a time to break a nail," someone whined. "And I have a date with Greg in an hour." Zon crammed his knuckles into his mouth. He was in the women's bathroom!

Customer Reviews:
fitting it all in.......2007-05-09
Most athletes feel torn between their sport, job, family and sleep. Too often we focus too much energy on one at the expense of the others. Achieving balance is key to a happy and fulfilling life. Carmichael reveals his own journey (including the struggles) to find this balance in his own life. A very personal look into how even elite athletes struggle to fit it all in. Includes recipes, meal plans and exercise programs, tailored to all fitness levels. Gives beginners a clear path to follow, and offers enough nutritional/balance advice for the advanced athlete seeking to excel without sacrificing other areas of life. Great message.
Good insight into a Performance Lifestyle.......2007-02-26
I'm a raving fan of Chris Carmichael. I thought there were great insights in this book about the idea of "Performance" and "winning" and how you can improve your lifestyle. The book does start really strong, and then seems to turn into a before-and-after diet and exercise book with pages of recipes, and it may seem to get a little bit sidetracked with discussion about improved sexual function. But I overlooked all that because the insights throughout, especially the candid ones from a pro like Chris are invaluable; they are important and can set you on a much better path than most diet and exercise books. This book is a significant departure from the usual stuff. Thanks Chris for putting out a book that really starts to get people thinking differently about their lifestyle.
Excellent read!!!.......2007-02-17
I already knew many of these theories of fitness, eating habits, and lifestyle, yet the reminder from Chris Carmichael came at a great time for me. This is a book that is very inspirational, and yet can produce consistent results if taken seriously.
Whole-Life Tips from Lance Armstrong's Trainer .......2007-01-17
Give credit to Chris Carmichael for not writing another book just focused on fitness. Instead, he takes a holistic approach to fitness, diet and relationships. Emphasizing the need for balance is key, but Carmichael is on stronger footing with the fitness and diet tips.
The only mild quibble I have with the book is that the bulk of it is comprised of recipes. The substantive content is a relatively quick read; if you backed out the recipes, you might barely have enough material to constitute a book.
Carmichael is effective in showing how, ironically, when he was starting up his own fitness business, he got so busy that he neglected his own diet and conditioning. If it can happen to him, it can happen to us.
more recipes.......2007-01-16
The book starts off strong. The reasons that Carmichael gives for writing it are reasons that any middle aged athlete or wanna-be can relate to - aging, schedule conflicts, obligations...
Unfortunately the book quickly becomes just another exercise and recipe book. At this point so much has been written about the pursuit of fitness that it's hard to keep it fresh.
One fitness aspect that Carmichael treats that few others do is agility. He has some agility tests and exercises that don't always show up in the typical 'how to' book.
As another reviewer stated, this book would be excellent for the beginning endurance athlete, or perhaps for someone returning to working out. If you've been at it a few years, you've probably heard it in other words before.

Book Description
The definitive guide to the basic principles and latest advances in Nutritional Genomics
Though still in its infancy, nutritional genomics, or "nutrigenomics," has revealed much about the complex interactions between diet and genes. But it is in its potential applications that nutrigenomics promises to revolutionize the ways we manage human health and combat disease in the years ahead. Great progress already has been made in modeling "personalized" nutrition for optimal health and longevity as well as in genotype-based dietary interventions for the prevention, mitigation, or possible cure of a variety of chronic diseases and some types of cancer.
Topics covered include:
* Nutrients and gene expression
* The role of metabolomics in individualized health
* Molecular mechanisms of longevity regulation and calorie restriction
* Green tea polyphenols and soy peptides in cancer prevention
* Maternal nutrition and fetal gene expression
* Genetic susceptibility to heterocyclic amines from cooked foods
* Bioinformatics and biocomputation in nutrigenomics
* The pursuit of optimal diets
Written by an all-star team of experts from around the globe, this volume provides an integrated overview of the cutting-edge field of nutritional genomics. The authors and editors lead an in-depth discussion of the fundamental principles and scientific methodologies that serve as the foundation for nutritional genomics and explore important recent advances in an array of related disciplines. Each self-contained chapter builds upon its predecessor, leading the reader seamlessly from basic principles to more complex scientific findings and experimental designs. Scientific chapters are carefully balanced with those addressing the social, ethical, regulatory, and commercial implications of nutrigenomics.
