The Dress Lodger is engrossing historical fiction. As in the best of its genre, Sheri Holman's atmospheric, miasmic tale set in cholera-stricken Sunderland, England, circa 1831 is based on fact. Its epigraph from Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary--"Grave: A place where the dead are laid to await the coming of the medical student"--casts the novel's thematic lodestone, steering the reader into a deathly plot pursued through streets emanating the sounds, insufferable smells, humor, adversities, and disease of an early-19th-century industrial city.

Fifteen-year-old Gustine--the dress lodger--is a potter's assistant by day, prostitute by night. Her overbearing pimp and landlord has her permanently shadowed by an indefatigable, mysterious old woman "called Eyeball or Evil Eye or Gray Sister by boys who have read their Homer, but mostly called just plain Eye." Otherwise how could he guard his investment in the startling blue dress in which Gustine rents herself? Her trade, he explains, "works on this basic principle: a cheap whore is given a fancy dress as a higher class of prostitute, the higher the station of the clientèlle; the higher the station, the higher the price." Gustine's garment beckons Henry Chiver, an ambitious young surgeon who has fled Edinburgh, having been implicated in the convictions of infamous pioneer anatomists Burke and Hare for murder and grave robbing. For this doctor, desperate to reestablish his tarnished reputation through medical discovery, the heart is the favorite organ, "the singular fascination of his life." But to further his researches, and quell the increasing demands of his paying students--who are restless for induction into the arts of the scalpel--Henry requires dead bodies for dissection, to the horror of his naïve, philanthropic fiancée. But the Anatomy Act, which allows doctors to obtain corpses legally, has yet to pass through Parliament, and a suspicious public is terrifying itself with stories of murderous "burkers."

Street-smart Gustine, a pragmatist trapped in unrelenting poverty, is all heart for her nameless little son who wears--literally--his heart on the outside. His rare case of ectopia cordis is just the sort of anatomical anomaly whose study would make a name for the doctor. Amid the gathering momentum of the cholera epidemic, Henry and Gustine strike up a fatal pact: life for her son in exchange for a fresh supply of dead bodies for Henry's dissection. With mordant Dickensian wit and Elizabeth Gaskell's deft touch for gutsy outcast women seizing control of their destiny, Sheri Holman carves out a rich, imaginative adventure as incisive and as gruesomely fascinating as a 19th-century operating theater. --Rachel Holmes

Book Description

In Sunderland, England, a city quarantined by the cholera epidemic of 1831, a defiant, fifteen-teen-year old beauty in an elegant blue dress makes her way between shadow and lamp light. A potter's assistant by day and dress lodger by night, Gustine sells herself for necessity in a rented gown, scrimping to feed and protect her only love: her fragile baby boy. She holds a glimmer of hope after meeting Dr. Henry Chiver, a prisoner of his own dark past. But in a world where suspicion of medicine runs rampant like a fever, these two lost souls will become irrevocably linked, as each crosses lines between rich and destitute, decorum and abandon, damnation and salvation. By turns tender and horrifying, The Dress Lodger is a captivating historical thriller charged with a distinctly modern voice. . . .

3 out of 5 stars A Quirky Good Read.......2007-08-14

Like a patchwork quilt, Holman takes bits of seemingly disparate lives and threads them together into a tapestry where nothing is as it appears. The device of the third person narrator reminds me a little of the movie "Moulin Rouge"; a story within a story, or the book as a theater. There is always one story line that cycles around to the next. I'm willing to give a lot of lattitude to the plot if I'm enjoying the ride, and while that was usually true, there were also parts where the writing was just tedious, or lines of action that seemed to almost crescendo but then fizzle. Still, I certainly enjoyed it enough to keep going. I mean, where else are you going to find a character who is a ferret named Mike, on the same level of importance as his human counterparts?

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, heart-breaking historical thriller.................2007-07-01

In this well drawn historical novel, we find a young lady with raw courage, resolve and cunning amid filthy, horrible, dire conditions.
A mere 14 year girl when she first takes to the street life of prostitution to survive, her character is almost impossible not to care about and feel genuine empathy for...the situation is so painfully bleak.

The novel takes place in Sunderland, England in 1831 and it is here that cholera is about to first strike in Britain in an alarming and deadly epidemic. Once it 'jumps ship', Gustine becomes an unwitting vehicle of the transmission of the infection.

She turns her tricks at night `lodged' in a beautiful blue dress that a fine lady would wear, thus charming her clients into believing her to be of a higher social stature. She is wise beyond her years, possessing all the skills of surviving the mean back streets and evil that surround her.

The narration is captivating and surprisingly elegant given the bleakness of the scene. It is reminiscent of a modern Greek tragedy infused with body-snatching , Gothic puzzles and psychological dramas!

It is also a love story; the love of a desperate mother nurturing a fragile infant. She will do anything to help and protect her baby.

Enter a physician anatomist, Dr Henry Chiver, aged 32 and greedy for freshly dead bodies on which he may teach his students the art of surgery and dissection.

As secrets unravel and deceptions prevail, surprises surface and this novel stuns!

If you like historical thrillers......you'll probably really enjoy this book!

5 out of 5 stars All are victims.......2007-05-30

A novel where everyone, in one way or another, falls victim to a cholera plague spreading across the globe, and now entering the lives & politics of Sunderland, England. Through superb writing & masterful story-telling, the rough life of the underclass and the intentions of the wealthy--good or bad--are thoroughly examined. I wasn't turned off by the graphics of the novel--it only helps to contribute to the medical history that provides a backbone for the story. More disturbing was the vulgar about-face made by Dr. Chiver (a sympathetic character at the novel's outset) balanced by the emotional flowering of the Eye and personal growth of Gustine. Overall, a captivating novel that I absolutely could not put down, especially towards the end--loved every bit of it!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-05-22

The book had an interesting premise, characters that I thought I would care about. I dragged myself through the first half of the book thinking it would grab me. Never did. I found the rambling stream of conciseness writing style a distraction and the subject matter too grim, between the two I lost interest. The book was filled with ugliness, not a glimmer of hope for the characters or alas the poor reader. The best part was when I gave myself permission to skim the last 80 pages.

Overwhelmingly a non-hit with the book club.

3 out of 5 stars Engaging and well written.......2007-05-21

I enjoyed this book while I was reading it. I thought the story was engaging and it's unraveling moved me. I liked the main character Gustine, a hard working and devoted mother.

I felt that Sheri Holman's depiction of the characters was realistic and many faceted. No one was all good or all bad, she showed us the strength and weakness, good and evil in each of them.

The story is a richly detailed narrative told from an unusual perspective and only revealed to the reader at the end of the book. Gustine is a young mother who works two jobs to care for her infant son; one of which is selling herself as a prostitute and doing so in a beautiful gown she rents from her landlord. A handsome young doctor, Dr Henry Chiver has secrets from his past and an obsessions of his own. He is engaged to be married to Audrey Place. Their connections are woven during the time of an epidemic of cholera in Sunderland, England, 1831.

I enjoyed the commentary on class and the politics of public policy. I thought the Reader's Guide and conversation with Sheri Holman was a nice bonus to this novel. I liked hearing how she took real people from history and wove them together with her own fiction.

This could be a good one for a book club.

2 out of 5 stars The sisty uglers.......2006-05-31

I was pretty ambivalent about this book--it almost seemed as if it had been written by two people, and I liked one author, but the other, not so much. The two main characters seemed about as believable as the hero and heroine ever do in romances, and their dialogue was unforced and sometimes witty--all good. But the secondary cast of characters--no believability there. Gracie's horrible family reminded me of nothing so much as the evil stepmother and stepsisters in Cinderella--overdrawn, and a family highly unlikely to have produced the heroine. The final straw came at the end, when they suddenly, for no apparent reason, see the error of their ways and profess their appreciation for Gracie. At this point, I threw the book down in disgust--of course, I'd finished it by then, so it was a pretty meaningless gesture, but still.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Heartfelt, Second Chance Romance.......2006-03-24

I fell in LOVE with Gracie and Riley..she had it "RIGHT" when she was only 14 years old. Had to come back 14 years later to find her true love. It was great the way Susan Mallery put in all the humor and mystery. I couldn't put it down...a real page turner. I kept reading when I should have been doing something else or "SLEEPING". Don't think anyone will be disappointed in this book, would recommend it to anyone. Very lighthearted.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily Funny! .......2006-01-11

`Falling for Gracie' by Susan Mallery is a fabulous book. This book was on my shelf for a while and I just passed it over because of the cover. But when I took the chance ,I was hooked after the first page and finished it in wee hours this morning. The story is very funny with a hint of mystery and great love story. Gracie has huge `nutty' crush on Riley when she was 14 years old. She was sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle so she would disrupt Riley's wedding. The story starts 14 years later and both Gracie and Riley have returned to their small California hometown. There were so many laugh out loud moments - take a chance it will put a smile on your face.

4 out of 5 stars Charming second chance tale with the boy next door.......2005-10-03

Gracie Landon has spent the last 14 years trying to live down her infamous past. Sent away at the age of 14 because her obsessive love for Riely Whitefield resulted in all kinds of havoc, Gracie has been asked by her mother and sisters to return home to plan her sister Vivian's wedding. It turns out that the reason they appeared to invite her is for one of her famous wedding cake creations at no charge. Gracie, now living in LA is the wedding cake maker to the stars; the Vera Wang of the cake set. When her sister Alexis asks her to help spy on her husband because she suspects he's unfaithful, Gracie reluctantly agrees, particularly since it entails spying on the house of Riley. Zeke is Riley's mayoral campaign manager. Riley has a vengeful uncle who makes his winning the election a condition of his inheritance of $97 million. His plans are to win but not serve. When they literally bump into each other, she confesses to Riley why she's there, and he agrees to help her solve the mystery to ensure hsi chances for winning are not curtailed. Soon he wonders why he resisted her all the years ago. As Riley's popularity in the poles increase (thanks to a suggestive picture and a reprinting of "The Gracie Chronicles," highlighting her past transgressions), he and Gracie continue to investigate. But the current mayor will do anything to get reelected, and he and his mistress (who has link to both Riley and Gracie) try to embarrass Riley and Gracie at every turn. But when her livelihood is threatened, Gracie is out for blood.

The story is refreshing and more than a mystery/romance. The family dynamics of the Landon women could be a book in and of itself, and the nosy townspeople would make anyone happy to live an anonymous life in a big city. While the bad guys are no mystery, getting there is so much fun!

5 out of 5 stars Great, heartfelt romance.......2005-06-04

This romance was great! Both of the main characters had intense rooting value.

Gracie Landon had been in exile since she was fourteen. She had found herself the star of the local newspaper's "Gracie Chronicles" after stalking her first crush, Riley Whitefield. The whole town of Los Lobos was aware of Gracie and her unrequited love. Her mother felt disgraced by her so-called friends and sent Gracie to live with her aunt and uncle. Gracie has come home after fourteen years to help with her sister Vivian's wedding plans. Gracie is a reknowned cake maker and has agreed to make her sister's wedding cake. In the process, she is trying to reconnect with both sisters, Vivian and Alexis, and her mother. All have family issues with which they are trying to come to terms.

Gracie finds that she is still deeply attracted to Riley, who is back in town after traveling the South China Sea developing oil rigs. Riley is pursuing his own personal vendetta in the process of running for mayor of Los Lobos. But along the way, he finds himself captivated by Gracie, who always leads with her heart.

This was a great romance from beginning to end!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting mirror on Corporate greed and human society.......2006-07-30

A man pulled from a car wreck and revived through CPR awakens in hospital to find he cannot remember anything about himself - or much of anything . . . except for the fact that he violently resists the fact that he is the person identified by the hospital through the papers on him and in the wreckage of the car, and that he is terribly afraid of the company he supposedly worked for, and the people with whom he supposedly worked. He looks like the person they claim he is, he has the same identifying marks, he even shares the same fingerprints, but he is absolutely certain that he is not this person. The only one who believes him at first is the woman who rescued him.

Gillian Bradshaw brings these characters, especially the main character, to life in a way that I haven't seen in a long time - I was fascinated and unable to put this book down until I reached the ending. At first it read like a mystery/thriller, but as the book progresses, it very gradually (and, in my opinion, in a realistic manner) enters the realm of science fiction. The more technical elements are explained in a manner that I found easy to understand and added to the story.

This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to anyone who can get their hands on it. I hope that it will be re-released at some point, if enough people discover it.

4 out of 5 stars The face in the mirror is not mine..........2004-01-31

One of the most basic traits of our humanity is our identity. Our identity is made up of our history, our memories, our personality and our relationships. But what would happen if you woke up one day and all of that was gone? You look in the mirror and you don't recognize the face that is staring back at you? You're in a hospital but you don't know how you got there?

The Wrong Reflection, by Gillian Bradshaw, is a science fiction thriller that begins dealing with this issue. Bradshaw is primarily known for writing historical fiction using her classical background. Whatever possessed her to try her hand at science fiction, I have no clue. However, she succeeds brilliantly using the talents that her previous genre no doubt taught her (I have not read any of her other books). She creates vivid characters and ties them into a tight thriller that makes you keep turning the page as you wonder what's happening. Unfortunately, the ending can't keep up the steam, and she uses a grammatical conceit that becomes increasingly aggravating.

The first half of The Wrong Reflection is a brilliant mystery, with Paul knowing even less than the reader. This makes the book even more enjoyable as you try to unravel what's going on before Paul can. The tension mounts as Sir Philip keeps trying to get Paul to check into a medical facility run by Stellar, and Paul knows that something is going on. But every time he starts to remember, he doubles over in pain and has a severe bout of nausea. I found myself wanting to read "just one more chapter" when I should have been going to bed. It was engrossing, and I really felt sorry for Paul and his predicament. Sandra was an intriguing character as well, feeling obligated to find out how the man she rescued is doing, and then sensing a kindred spirit, a man who wears his logical mind as a badge, and a man who is scared of everything around him. She becomes his anchor to the world, and also his lifeline. His memory is strange as he can remember many scientific things, but he can't remember how to put on pants (I found that part a little illogical, though it's slightly explained once the secret is revealed).

As the mystery is revealed, it becomes a standard "misunderstood alien is used and abused by an evil corporation for fun and profit" story with a scientific twist, lessening the impact. The villains are rather stereotypical, with Lloyd being the worst of the bunch. He believes his heart's in the right place but can't see why what he's doing is wrong. Other characters are less so, being far more interesting. There's a Michael Moore-like documentary director (though more honest) named Rod, and his lover and cameraman, Dave. Thankfully, nothing is made of the fact that they are gay, becoming just part of their characters rather than an agenda. Malcolm, the black home-nurse who is initially brought in to take care of Paul, suffers from this a little bit more. He is a well-rounded character, but his race becomes an issue when he asks Sandra if the fact that he's black is why she won't be with him (despite the fact that she's obviously already in love with Paul). This bit is just thrown in there and batted aside by Sandra, making the reader wonder why it was even there in the first place.

Bradshaw's writing is excellent, drawing the reader in with her words and making even the slower second-half of the book seem much better than it really is. Her prose is really well done and she writes with great economy. There's only one problem, and it may be a personal issue with me. I found the constant movement from one viewpoint to the other very annoying. Bradshaw moves from Paul's viewpoint to Sandra's and then back again, all within the same section of the book. Thankfully, these are the only two viewpoint characters she uses, or it would get even more confusing. I found it very discombobulating when I was reading Paul's thoughts and then all of a sudden I'm reading Sandra's. I know expert writers can break the rules, and that this can even be effective, but I don't think it was this time. It was distracting, and it really detracted from the book. Considering how great the rest of her writing was, I found it even more disappointing.

I can't say much about the science aspect of the novel, as I don't know a lot about magnetic fields and singularities. It sounded good enough to suspend my disbelief, which is all I ask for in a science fiction novel. It doesn't get very technical, so if hard science turns you off, you don't need to worry about it. Bradshaw explains it well enough so that you can understand it

The Wrong Reflection will keep you reading, despite the fact that it limps to the finish line after a wonderful start.

5 out of 5 stars powerful amateur sleuth science fiction.......2003-09-02

Passerby Sandra Murray rescues an unconscious stranger from the river after his automobile plunges into the water after an accident. She learns from his identifications that his name is Paul Anderson and he works as an executive at Stellar Research, an R&D firm. When Paul awakens at the nearby hospital, he has no idea who he is or any memory of just about anything else.

In spite of the amnesia, Paul instinctively distrusts anyone associated with Stellar Research, especially his superior Sir Philip Lloyd, but is not sure why. While he heals, his savior decides to make inquiries into his identity though she leans towards he is Paul. However, his terrorized look whenever Stellar Research is mentioned makes her determined to learn why.

THE WRONG REFLECTION shows the depth of talent that highly popular historical author Gillian Bradshaw has as she deftly provides a powerful amateur sleuth science fiction. The story line focuses on Sandra's investigation that takes her where no woman has gone before. She and the hero are a delightful duo whose star-crossed romance seems to fit the adage that it must have been the wrong time and the wrong place, but feels right. Science fiction, mystery, thriller, and romance readers will appreciate this taut tale that will send everyone (including this reviewer) seeking DANGEROUS NOTES, from what I have heard as good as or better than this great novel.

4 out of 5 stars A Departure for Gillian Bradshaw.......2002-03-24

I have not yet finished reading this book, but have a few thoughts about it. First, it is quite a departure for Gillian Bradshaw. It is the only one of her novels I know of that is set in modern day. I believe it is also her only science-fiction novel (though I could certainly be wrong about that.) It reminds me strongly of C.S. Lewis' forays into science fiction in style, title, and story (the use of "not-Anderson" is very "Lewis") and I wonder if this similarity is intentional. Also, I borrowed this book from the library, and it is categorized as a Christian book; although, so far, I don't see why! I'm sure it will become apparent. Surely this also hearkens to Lewis.

A bit of the plot reminds me of a novel I read about 7 years ago called THE DONORS. I believe it was by Gerald Et Al Harris ...The element of plot to which I believe Gillian Bradshaw may have referred in this novel was absolutely brilliant. I have never seen it used since.

All in all, I am finding this a very good book. I'm eager to find out how it turns out. I think Gillian Bradshaw is more at home and more skilled with historical and historically based novels, but this is definitely a fine book!

                          Book Description

When more is known about the characteristics of the metaphorical right and left hemispheres of the Neocortex, we may begin to make different choices in how we deal with forming the fabric of our lives. We complain a lot about our "left-brain" society, but seem to feel helpless to change it. More knowledge about the gifts of the silent right hemisphere can make some subtle--and profound--changes. The essays in this little book cover a wide range of topics, from a critique of the treatment of mental illness to an appreciation of the intelligence of animals-and a lot in between. The right hemisphere has the kind of intelligence that sees the whole picture. The left brain has been developed as a tool, and we seem to have put the tool in charge. We don''t have to lose any of the gifts that the left hemisphere gives us--we can still take advantage of all our words and all our numbers and all our machines, but our focus can be changed enough to make a difference, and to create a less stressful, more natural, environment. As more knowledge of hemispheric differences has become known, more and more books have come out extolling the virtues of the right hemisphere. The essays in this book are based on a belief that the right brain should not only be appreciated more, but that it should be in charge, because it is the hemisphere that sees the whole picture.

superb program. good general information. program focuses on overall athleticism/power, including reasonable agility, stretching and plyometric regimens (which is rarely seen but a necessary part of a premiere program). program is applicable to nearly all athletes (perhaps not ideal for a pro/college athletes, solely because they would have programs designed to peak at the season of their sport).

I am a Division one track and field athlete. I have been looking for an out of season lifting program that will help make me stronger and faster. I was never a fan of these core lifts until I bought this book. The variation that is available really caught my attention. For example, the power clean has been an exercise that I refuse to do and this book offers many other options. Instead I perform a hang clean. So far, I think that this program will do nothing but improve my athletic ability.

My degree is in physical education and I have been teaching for 11 years. Shepard's Bigger Faster Stronger program is among the best I have found.
