Book Description

This new edition combines Tolstoy’s most famous short tale, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, with a less well known but equally brilliant gem, Master and Man, both newly translated by Ann Pasternak Slater. Both stories confront death and the process of dying: In Ivan Ilyich, a bureaucrat looks back over his life, which suddenly seems meaningless and wasteful, while in Master and Man, a landowner and servant must each confront the value of the other as they brave a devastating snowstorm. The quintessential Tolstoyan themes of mortality, spiritual redemption, and life’s meaning are nowhere more movingly and deftly explored than in these two tales.

This unique edition also includes a critical Introduction and extensive notes by Ann Pasternak Slater, a Fellow at St. Anne’s College, Oxford.

5 out of 5 stars Great short fiction.......2007-05-04

These are two of Tolstoy's best short novels, wonderfully translated, with an insightful introduction and biographical note. Both stories are masterpieces of craft -- fun to read, but with a strong moral center -- the way all good fiction should be. I had stayed away from Tolstoy for a long time, unwilling to tackle War & Peace or Anna Karenina, but these two short novels show his mastery of story and psychological insight, so this is a great place to start. I know I'll be reading more Tolstoy after this.

    Book Description

In these two famous short novels, Leo Tolstoy takes readers to the brink of despair. At the end of life worldly ambition offers no consolation for the spiritually empty soul. But Tolstoy is the master of themes of redemption. He turns his morbid topic into hope, leading towards spiritual awakening. Tolstoy offers his readers a lifetime of perspective on a most human subject, death. These two stories will offer encouragement to the spiritually hungry.

        Setting: Regency England

        Sensuality: 7

Penelope Featherington fell madly, hopelessly in love with Colin Bridgerton two days before her 16th birthday. Unfortunately, Colin has always seen Penelope as the plump, shy best friend of his younger sister. By the time Penelope is 28 and a seasoned member of the English ton, she's accepted that her love for Colin is destined to remain unrequited and she shall be a spinster forever. Fate, however, has other plans. When Lady Whistledown's Society Papers announce that Colin has returned from his nearly nonstop travels, Penelope is blissfully unaware that her life is about to change dramatically. Colin is equally unaware of the turn his life is about to take. He's not surprised that his beloved mother is determined to marry him off, but he's rather astonished to find himself inexplicably drawn to Penelope. Her dry wit and intelligent mind are delightful, and Colin soon finds himself joining forces with her to deflect his matchmaking mama's good intentions. Together, the two will thwart their mothers' iron wills, face the formidable Lady Danbury, confront the gossips of London society, and resolve the lovely dilemma of falling in love. And, oh yes, there is that matter of the true identity of Lady Whistledown. Will the twosome unmask the elusive journalist? Or will their efforts be doomed to failure like so many others' before?

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton continues author Julia Quinn's wildly popular series of Regency historicals featuring the Bridgerton family, The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer from a Gentleman. True, the novel possesses all that we've come to expect from Quinn, including deft plotting, witty repartee, a faultless Regency setting, and expert characterization. But perhaps the book's most pleasing facet is Quinn's quietly nuanced handling of the hero's and the heroine's internal growth, which is furthered by their blooming relationship. They're two strong individuals made stronger by their bond. Now that's love. --Lois Faye Dyer

        4 out of 5 stars A Writer's Happy Ending.......2006-12-22

As a writer, I have to say this has been my favorite of the Bridgerton series. The two writing characters are so endearing, I was sad when the story was over. Fun, entertaining read, as I always expect from Julia Quinn.

        3 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2006-12-07

After reading The Duke and I, I had high hopes for this book. I thought it would be a great story after I read the introduction. However, the main characters lack chemistry and I just wasn't excited about them. It was just dull. It's still a decent book, however, not a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars A good story but somehow not quite gripping enough.......2006-12-05

The first couple of paragraphs of this book are fantastic - light-hearted, amusing, witty - and I settled down for a gripping and brilliant read. Sadly I didn't get entirely that. This was a good book, like Ms Quinn's others, but it wasn't quite as good as some and because of that I was disappointed.

This is the fourth book in the series (following "The Duke And I", "The Viscount Who Loved Me" and "An Offer From A Gentleman") and is the story of Colin Bridgerton, third son, and Penelope Featherington. Penelope gets mentioned in most of the other books and in fact there is one scene in "An Offer From A Gentleman" which features Penelope and Colin and is repeated in this book.

In some ways I really liked the premise of this story - it's the good old friends who know each other for years and years and then somehow find themselves falling in love and getting married. It's so nice for the slightly dumpy and apparently dull woman to get the dishy man - most Regencies have beautiful debutants striding onto the scene and ensnaring wonderful men instantly. Penelope waits 12 years for her man - but she gets him!

Penelope is a great character in this book. She's not particularly beautiful but she has brains and wit and somehow in this book she discovers a bit more self-confidence or gumption to change her life a little. Colin also is trying to step out of the shadows of his two older brothers and find a purpose in life - these interactions were well drawn and believable. In fact it's in character drawing that Julia Quinn excels and I very much appreciate the way in which her large cast of characters all have their own behaviours.

A lot of this book is focused on Lady Whistledown - a plot device used well in most of the other books but probably rather outstaying its welcome. Fortunately Lady Whistledown is unmasked in this book - probably rather more of this was made than strictly necessary.

This book also sets the scene for the next ("To Sir Philip With Love") which features Eloise who was Penelope's best buddy. I like the way the books are interlinked and that we can follow on with the relationships of those who've been married off in earlier books.

Overall this is still a good book, much better than most Regencies on the market at the moment, but it's a little disappointing when compared with some of Julia Quinn's others in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and entertaining.......2006-11-10

A very different kind of love story, and yes... this was a love story and one of the better of the series! Penelope had loved Colin for years, and the evolution of his feelings for her was entertaining to read. There was plenty of other Bridgerton's for all the characters to play against, which is one of Quinn's strengths. I particularly enjoyed the scene in which Colin was attempting ask Mrs. Featherington for Penelope's hand.... very funny. I did not, however, enjoy the scene in which Mrs. Whistledown was revealed. It was way overdone and ridiculous to make a grand announcement. I think Quinn could have come up with something better if it was necessary to unmask her at all.

4 out of 5 stars A laugh out loud and entertaining read.......2006-11-06

Penelope has long accepted herself as the ugly duckling, the older sister doomed to spinsterhood because she wasn't beautiful enough to catch the eye of an eligible suitor. Regardless of her station in life, Penelope had already lost her heart...to Mr. Colin Bridgerton, a very handsome, very wealthy, and very eligible bachelor. He, however, hurt her when she overheard him declaring to his brothers that he certainly has no intentions of ever marrying her.

Many years pass and Penelope is well into spinsterhood at the ripe old age of twenty-eight. As for Colin, he developed wanderlust and has spent much of his time traveling. But now his sudden urge to be home has dragged him back to England. Much has changed and never before has he noticed how smart Penelope is, how witty, how beautiful...

My favorite part of this book is the dialogue. It's witty, interesting and very lively. Through dialogue, the characters literally jump out of the book and into your heart. You can't help but laugh your way through this story. It's whimsically woven with such playful and tongue-in-cheek writing that you can't help but smile.

You'll definitely laugh your way through this book. Enjoy.

              Book Description

There has been a biography of God just recently, but there has never been an objective biography of the fallen Seraphim, Lucifer. Since the two are intimately connected (the rebellion between the Seraphim and the Celestial Court), this earliest story known to us needs a detailed fictional description based on the ancient texts that have become available in the last two centuries. Lucifer is a thinking, feeling being closely connected to astrophysical theories of light-and-dark matter/energy and the time soon after the Big Bang. This star-being carried light and star formation into the liquid plasma of our early universe. Lucifer also is close to humans, with his rebel forces interbreeding with us and using Earth as a secure base from which to continue an ongoing Civil War in Space. This is the story of the reasons for that Civil War, the battles based on old texts now available, and the struggle that involves all of human history. The Indus civilization had a Lord of Space, Time and Sky that came from the northern constellation Draco. This is the story of the Dragon-Seraphim's leader, Lucifer.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a glimpse of the real human religious story.......2006-03-06

In Flights of Seraphs, Colleen Clements provides a provacative, yet highly defendable, account of the old texts and the distortion of the history of Lucifer, the fallen Seraphim. With engaging prose and brilliant weaving of the old texts and characters in her book, Clements presents a rich tapestry that keeps the reader in anticipation of the next revelation. Although not designed as an academic text per se, the use of ancient texts with fictional materials to present a more balanced account of Lucifer, than traditionally found in Judeo-Christian sources poses serious issues and questions for historiographic, philosophic, and religious analysis that researches, or perhaps Clements herself, must explore.

For readers interested in religiously based fiction, such as "The Da Vinci Code" or "The Historian" this is essential reading that they will find hard to put down once they begin. In purely literary terms Flight of the Seraphs is well written, has characters that the reader finds believable and full of depth of character.

For academics interested in the ancient texts and how the characters and accounts eluded to within them have been often subverted for political and religious reasons this book is also an essential read. As Clements has examined the old texts and religious suppression in the Tenth Order, found on her website, and eludes to a more academic book on the "Other history" to be released soon the avenues for serious academic debate that Flight of the Seraphs creates should not be shut down, but embraced.

Overall, this is a fascinating read and an essential addition to the collections of any reader that is interested in history, religion, and the story of mankinds' relation to the cosmos.

4 out of 5 stars Fingerpost to the future points backwards.......2005-11-01

Clements takes the DNA of the ancient texts and reconstitutes a flesh and blood saga that brings sense to a tale embedded in our cultural heritage.
Readers without particular interest in texts mythologic or religious can enjoy the book as pure science fiction, but anyone exposed to Western culture has been impregnated by the ubiquity of Christian ideas and will recognise the back story here. This provacative exposure of events and character is certain to offend some of those wedded to the cannon of King James, but results in a perspective that makes many events recounted there resolve into coherance. (finally)

Like Diamont's 'The Red Tent' did for events of the old testament, Clements 'Flights of Seraphs,' allows the reader to fully imagine a past that existed, rather than one concocted. Like Brown's 'Davinci Code,' offers conspiracy rear of puzzling recent history. The audiences of those best sellers are wide. Unless their individual tastes are also wide, this book is no doubt too particular for that entire segment. You, dear reader, should like the fringe at both ends of the carpet

Clements takes the ancients at their word, with respect for the reporting abilities of those people, often dismissed as credulous. The book will have you meaning to buy copies of The Book of Enoch and The Dead Sea Scrolls, while you pine for foot notes. Alas, witted one, the book is for the sensual pleasures of intelligent story telling, not pedagogy. Those of you of academic persuasion are referred by Clements to her web site for the scholarly treatment from her textbook 'The Tenth Order.' (As an aside, if you like reading footnotes, try 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel'-you'll be orgasmic for days.)

The Big Questions are an unlisted ingrediant in Clements stew of sex, blood, cloning, political treachery, lust and betrayel. Offering an updated vocabulary to interpret our past, and new questions to ask of the present, reading, one muses: What does it mean to be an ethical being? Who controls the definition of what it means to be human? Who else should we admitt to the club and favor with our ethics?

At a time when the Christian myth is shown thin in the light of gnosis, human need for a narrative which respects the maturity of society is dire and near absent from mass consciousness. You will have to seek it for yourselves. Clements has, with a mind scientific, philosophic, historic, and, yes- folkloric.

              Book Description

An essential guide for recognizing, preventing, and healing childhood trauma, from infancy through adolescence—what parents, educators, and health professionals can do.

Trauma can result not only from catastrophic events such as abuse, violence, or loss of loved ones, but from natural disasters and everyday incidents such as auto accidents, medical procedures, divorce, or even falling off a bicycle. At the core of this book is the understanding of how trauma is imprinted on the body, brain, and spirit, resulting in anxiety, nightmares, depression, physical illnesses, addictions, hyperactivity, and aggression. Rich with case studies and hands-on activities, Trauma Through A Child’s Eyes gives insight into children’s innate ability to rebound with the appropriate support, and provides their caregivers with tools to overcome and prevent trauma.

5 out of 5 stars Best book in my library!.......2007-10-02

This is the best book in my library! I keep it next to me and reference it frequently. I have given 5 of them to family and friends with children. It is a bible for dealing with children who have been affected by trauma. Truly comprehensive, it provides a sensible protocol for understanding and healing trauma. Pre and peri natal issues are addressed as well. A must have for parents. Peter Levine and Maggie Kline have created a book for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone who works with children and their parents.......2007-07-03

This book offers clear explanations to the nature of trauma and how it affects the body--and subsequently, the emotions and perceptions and behavior--and how to prevent an overwhelming event from BECOMING traumatic for the long term. It is filled with doable and clear exercises, and helps demystify the concept of what trauma is, why things are traumatic, how to prevent trauma, the incidious way that traumatic events can impact later sensations and perceptions, and how to help heal those. A book by a leading figure in the field of trauma and the body, Peter Levine is a master.
Wonderfully clarifying for anyone who works with children--be it traumatized children or children who are exposed to 'normal' occasional overwhelming events such as falling of a bike--and to anyone who works with parents of children.
              Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible resource for parents, therapists, and former children..........2007-06-10

This book is a remarkable resource of information for anyone who has any experience or contact with children. It is not a heady read. Completely and utterly accessible to those who have no formal training in psychology (yet still riveting for those who do), it has many step-by-step guides (creative, physical, and emotional) for dealing with and assisting children through a myriad of life's trials and traumas, including random falls and accidents, loss of a pet, abuse, death, & bullying to name a few. This book also offers numerous skill-building guides to help a child develop their senses, mindfulness, awareness and boundaries, and several basic cases are presented of children they have come in contact with over the years with various presenting problems. Terribly informative, moving, healing, thought provoking and profoundly educational, this book will be one you'll recommend again and again. Not said tongue in cheek, if you were ever a child, you need to read this book.

              5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book-Trauma Through a Child's Eyes.......2007-01-17

Trauma Through a Child's Eyes does what it says it will do. It awakens "the ordinary miracle of healing." As a therapist, I have read countless theory and/or practice books. I have found myself either drowning in theory or bored by an author's list of do's and don't's. This book is refreshingly different. It is wisdom writ large.

As I read, I am drawn into a place of understanding:
-the body's natural tendency to protect itself
-a child's extraordinary ability to react to, renegotiate, and heal from traumatic events
-the responsibility we all have to respond intelligently and effectively to the trauma so prevalent in our world.
As I read, I am drawn into a place of hope:
-that we all have access to resilience
              -that our children can thrive
-that there is a way to help that does "no harm.'

I highly recommend this book for professionals, parents, anyone interested in the "miracle of healing." It is intelligently and compassionately written by two extraordinary professionals who are clearly more interested in healing trauma than in their own renown. I have recommended Trauma Through a Child's Eyes to clients, colleagues, friends and family and I recommend it unequivocally to you!

5 out of 5 stars MUCH NEEDED & FINALLY HERE!.......2007-01-10

Maggie Kline & Peter Levine have done an outstanding job addressing the unique ways trauma and its concomitant healing effects the lives of young people. With the subject of trauma's recent surge in popularity, a book devoted exclusively to trauma "through a child's eyes" is an exciting and much needed addition. This extensive & comprehensive look at trauma, its prevention and its healing, will be welcome by parents, teachers, physicians, and all of us interested in helping heal our beautiful & fragile planet.

2 out of 5 stars An Almost- Ordinary Book.......2006-05-13

A few of the stories stand out; most do not. Even as a nurse, I found many of the stories to be important perhaps to the teller but not necessarily to a reader in any walk of life. I guess I was expecting something on the level of the Chicken Soup for Nurses and this, to me, fell short.

              4 out of 5 stars Good anthology.......2005-10-30

What the authors of this book have done is compile 100 stories from nurses across the country. The stories are true and inspirational. A perfect gift for the nurses in your life!
