Book Description
This collection brings together Dahl's finest work, illustrating his genius for the horrific and grotesque which is unparalleled.
"Dahl has the mastery of plot and characters possessed by great writers of the past, along with a wildness and wryness of his own. One of his trademarks is writing beautifully about the ugly, even the horrible."--Los Angeles Times
"An ingenious imagination, a fascination with odd and ordinary detail, and a lust for its thorough exploitation are the...strengths of Dahl's storytelling."--New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
For adults or kids, Roald Dahl rocks!.......2006-08-25
Have loved his kids' books ever since I was a child and am now reading them with my daughter. This one is for grownups only, though! I described this collection to friends by saying "Roald Dahl is the British Flannery O'Connor." If you like dark, funny (sometimes truly twisted) short stories where, in surprise endings, those who scheme and plot always get theirs, you will truly enjoy this book.
The Best of Roald Dahl.......2006-05-09
As a child, I loved Roald Dahl's books from James and the Giant Peach to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Now that I am a little older, I started to read his mature works. I never go so enthusiastic about reading a book. You get it all with Roald Dahl, humor, suspence, brutality, and horrific stories all end with a surprising twist that you will never suspect. The best reading in years. Highly Recommended. My favorite is The Great Switcheroo. He is definatly one of the greatest writers of our time.
thrilling strories (for adults!).......2006-03-11
Very often the writer's skill can be appreciated after reading their short stories. The short form requires discipline and has to catch the reader's attention in a short time. Roald Dahl managed to do this in his short stories (the shorter ones from this collection are the best!). The stories are truly timeless - although written between 1945 and 1965, they have not aged at all. They still keep the readers holding their breath and having goose bumps. There are horrors, great insights into human soul, relationships, perversions, addictions...
I knew only "James and the Giant Peach" before I was recommended this collection by a (British) friend, who I am very grateful to. I have been returning to the stories over and over again. My favorites are probably the most morbid ones, starting with "Man from the South" through "Skin", "Royal Jelly" to "Pig". I like also "Taste" which is more focused on psychology. Anyway, Dahl knew how to find an original subject, how to twist the plot leading to the unexpected and very satisfying finale, and how to use the English language.
Delightfully dark.......2005-12-09
Roald Dahl is best known for his children's books, namely CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. This book collects some of his best adult short stories from his long career. The dark humor and morality that guides his children's books are amplified here. Outlandish, often unlikable characters often personify one or more of the seven deadly sins and usually pay for it. Dahl's dark sense of humor is fantastic and almost every story ends with a delightfully surprising and ironic twist. Dahl's macabre sensibility might draw comparisons to Poe, but his style is not nearly as laborious. Gems from this collection include: "The Man From the South," (a story that Quentin Tarantino, among others, has paid homage to); "Skin" about a million dollar tattoo; "Pig," in which a vegetarian boy discovers the joys and horrors of meat; a story about a hair-brained wife-swapping scheme; and "The Sound Machine," which allows one to hear the screams of plants. My only complaint about the collection is that the order is chronological and some of the more absurd stories fall in the middle, which makes some of the later, less absurd stories a bit of a letdown. But overall, a fantastic collection.
Dahly Dahly Doxenfree.......2005-03-23
The infamous, the cantankerous, the grandiloquent, the absurd, the essential, the satisfying Roald Dahl is magnificent. His fame comes almost exclusively from his work as a children's author. Unbeknownst to most, he was a prominent short fiction writer for numerous magazines and publications. "The Best of Roald Dahl" is a collection of his short fiction spanning a large duration of his career rectifying him not as a child's author but simply as well-written author. This collection is unforgettable, and Dahl finds the youthful incendiary in all of us.
From "Pig," to "Madame Rosetta," to "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," there are no lackluster tales. Although they have almost no commonality subjectively, his stories share a unique aesthetic, which makes them highly approachable and easy to understand - they often have what some might call an ethereal quality.
Stories like "Pig" may seem moralistically positive, but are often suggestive of the dark truth that is the real world. It's as though we are seeing our own negative world through the gentle eyes of Dahl who can only laugh. His dark humor is sometimes hilarious, but more than often grotesque. It will make you smile, it will make you sneer, and it may even make you vomit.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory it Ain't.......2000-05-16
But, if you liked Charlie as a kid, you may just have the twisted sense of humor it takes for Dahl's adult fiction. And I do mean adult. It's a human pheremone-toutin, spouse-swappin, hoppin into bed with an unknown leper sort of extravaganza not for the faint of heart. If you like your stories with sex and your sex with irony and your irony with extra spicy irony on top of that, you may have found your new favorite author.
Book Description
It isn't easy moving about Society dressed like a dandy-especially when one is a ruthless spy. But that's precisely the latest mission for Liar's Club agent Dalton Montmorecy. Dalton is posing as Sir Thorogood, the elusive cartoonist whose scathing political caricatures have all of London abuzz. The true identity of Sir Thorogood is a mystery, and Dalton hopes that impersonating him will flush out the real menace before his cartoons do further damage to the Crown. Now, if Dalton could only find a way to get the irksome, yet oddly appealing widow, Clara Simpson, off his trail.... When Clara meets Sir Thorogood at a ball, she's certain he is an impostor-because she's the true Sir Thorogood. Secretly penning the cartoons under the frothy nom de plume, Clara hopes to save enough money so that she can leave her in-laws and find a new residence. Now she is determined to reveal an imposter's identity-and that means doing some undercover work herself. But pretending to be someone you're not has a funny way of making a woman do things she wouldn't ordinarily dream of-even if it drives her straight into the arms of her devilishly handsome adversary!

Couldn't put down.......2007-08-29
I loved this book. Great lite reading and takes your mind to other places and times. I have read both the Pretender and now the Impostor and if I had lived in England during those times I would have been terrified of Lord Liverpool's political control in England. To think that if he thought you were dangerous, you just disappeared is extrememly scary and mind boggling.
WOW! .......2007-01-11
This book was AWESOME! I was so hooked on what was going on, trying to figure out the intruige, that I couldn't put it down! I loved the interactions between Clara and Dalton, in all their different disguises-especially Monty the theif and Clara Rose the maid! I can't wait to see if James's story is as good as the rest of them!
2nd book of the Series.......2006-10-08
The Impostor (Liar's Club)by Celeste Bradley is the story of new boss at the Liar's Club Dalton Montmorency. His first mission for the Liar's Club is to pretend to be Sir Thorogood famous cartoonist who is danger to England. Clara (a widow) furious that this man is pretending to me her aka Sir Thorogood famous cartoonist and seeks revenge. Great twists and turns off to read all the of The Liar's Club series The Pretender (1), The Impostor (2), The Spy (3) and The Charmer (4). If you enjoy this genre, I would also check out The Lady Lies, The Lady Killer and The Lady's Code by Samantha Saxon.
Dalton, Clara, AND James were wonderful.......2006-08-19
I'm so glad I found this author! I still have a few more of her books to read, but so far every book is worthy of 5 stars! She is just great at creating wonderful characters and interesting plots!
Dalton and Clara were wonderful together, a subtle love story that held my interest. I thought James Cunnington (The Spy) was just adorable in this story! He's a really cool hero.
Although, I wouldn't look at the drawings on Celeste Bradley's web site of the characters; with the exception of Clara and Olivia, none of the faces fit the character to whom they're given, in my opinion, and none are that pleasing to look at, especially James.
Better sequel but..........2006-08-15
Unlike The Pretender that had a somewhat ridiculous plot, this story moves along at a brisk pace. The spy/intrique carries the story through and immerses us further into Celeste Bradley's misfit world.
Unfortunately, she draws out the romance to equally ridiculous levels. The idea that these two observant people were not able to see beyond their disguises boggles the mind. Clara seems incredibly dim to automatically assume everyone wants her dead, especially Monty/Dalton. The characters never seem to ask the questions they should. And the romance resolution takes another useless 20 pages to tell. One would think Bradley was so in love with her world she refused to let go and made the characters stupid just to entertain her.
Yet, I look forward to see what happens with James, Rose, and Nathaniel as well as the rest of this motley crew.

Book Description
Not even the gods noticed when Chariss was born with the mark of The Protector. Now she and her wizard guardian seek shelter from a mad sorcerer in a household not just full of secrets and false hope, but watched by the god who will unwittingly reveal her role in an impending war. When an orphan sets aside a lifetime of running and fear to accept the responsibilities of guarding an arrogant deity, can she face the trials in the prophecies she uncovers? Will Nigel Taiman of her latest refuge dare to use his dragon heritage to bind her to his estate or to help her in her duty? "Choices Meant for Gods is without a doubt the freshest most engaging high fantasy novel to come out in years and breathes new life into a tired genre. The characters leap off the page and the plot is lightning quick and deftly written with many layers that tease the mind and imagination. Choices Meant for Gods is not a mere novel; it is a gorgeous piece of written art. I can hardly wait for the second book!" Jamieson Wolf, Linear Reflections Author of Hope Falls, Electric Pink, Electric Blue, and Garden City "In Choices Meant for Gods, Sandy Lender takes her readers of fantasy fiction by the hand and leads them through an exciting world filled with sorcerers, gods, goddesses, dragons, and other mythical creatures. Through the use of interesting characters and clever dialogue ("Try not to think, Nicolas. You look so much more handsome when you're bewildered."), she weaves a spell of magic and fantasy. The only problem for the reader may occur at the end of the book when they find themselves wanting more and discover they will have to wait for book two!" Gary R. Hoffman, Author for Short Story Anthologies including Seven By Seven and Never Safe
Customer Reviews:
Mortals should choose to read it.......2007-08-01
I confess: I do not read much. I have an amazing attention deficit that prevents me from finishing even the loftiest of classics. I finished reading this book. This fact may not seem so interesting to most, but is high praise considering the countless unfinished volumes in my office. The characters are endearing, Onweald springs vividly from the pages, and I anxiously await the unfolding of the next scenes in that world's history.
Simply cannot put this book down.......2007-07-13
I have to admit that I haven't finished th book yet, but not for lack of trying! I was explaining to a colleague why I was so tired (staying up until 2 AM, reading "just one more chapter" of "Choices Meant for Gods") and how exhilarating I am finding this book! Sandy Lender has taken great care to develop interesting characters. The book keeps you guessing. The teacher in me likes to try to predict what is coming next -- and I'm almost never right! I can't wait until Ms. Lender writes another book!
Great New Fantasy!.......2007-05-01
It's so refreshing when a novel comes along that grabs you from the outset and won't let go. Such was my experience with "Choices Meant for Gods." The characters are as real as the author can make them without literally leaping from the pages to be with the reader. Instead, the reader is drawn inexorably into Lender's new world, where even gods are "human." I hope that many more readers can have the opportunity to enjoy this marvelous work!
Great new Fantasy Realm!.......2007-04-27
Too many fantasy authors are re-hashing the same old plots, acted out by the same old tired heroes and heroines. Here we have a refreshing new take on things! I love that Chariss is both someone I can identify with and whom I can dream about becoming. . . it's what fantasy is all about!
Gods & Mortals.......2007-04-23
This book has a great deal to offer. It is good fantasy. It is good writing, period. The pace is fast, the characters well-crafted and compelling. The treatment of the gods and their interaction with mortals is original. My big complaint is that I must wait for the sequel(s) to learn the outcome.
Book Description
The tale of Paul Stoller's sojourn among sorcerors in the Republic of Niger is a story of growth and change, of mutual respect and understanding that will challenge all who read it to plunge deeply into an alien world.
Customer Reviews:
neither anthropology nor shamanism.......2003-09-19
In this book, Paul Stoller, an ambitious graduate student, tries to make sense of social life of Songhay-speaking people in the eastern Niger. The Songhay have once possessed the largest empire in African history; their formidable magician-king Sunni Ali created an elaborate and effective administrative system extending all the way up to Timbuktu and even Morrocco and, as Stoller shows in this book, Sunni Ali's memory is still very much alive in contemporary Niger.
The book follows Stoller as he wanders around Songhay villages trying to document social mores. He quickly finds what M. Mead never did - that polling and questionnaire techniques he was taught in the US do not work with the Songhay. In Niger, a direct question typically elicits an outright lie; effective field work consists of listening and participating whereas direct interrogation is counter-productive. Stoller then falls into the hands of a local "sorko", or magician-healer, who offers to teach him the secrets of the trade. At this point, the author is faced with the question: should one maintain, in bona fide anthropological work, classical aims of "objectivity" and "impartiality" or should one immerse oneself totally and completely into indigenous life, risking drowning into it and being forever lost to science? Stoller does neither: he is awed by the power and mystery of the secrets that he is witnessing yet at the same time he seems to be unable to comprehend the most elementary laws of indigenous shamanic practices. Thus, like the proverbial deer facing headlights of a car, Stoller is is constantly paralyzed by incomprehension and fear.
For me, the book provides more evidence for the hypothesis that the "Western paradigm" is just one of many, and not that empowering at that. If we start to tinker with our paradigm by "apprenticing" to cultures based on hard, merciless and pragmatic obsession with spiritual power (such as the Songhay) we are in for a tough ride. Stoller was; he ran away and I do not blame him.
On the other hand, the dialogues in this book are great and often funny and the book is a must read for anyone contemplating visiting Niger, Mali or Burkina Faso.
An enthnographer enters the world of the Sorcerers........1997-10-08
I chanced upon this book a few years ago, and consider it a real find. Paul Stoller gives a edge-of-the-seat account of his fieldwork amoung the Songhay of Niger. Very readable, detailed, and often humerous. It raises many questions about the nature of anthropological fieldwork.

SHADOW KINGDOMS is the first volume of the Weird Works of Robert E. Howard, presenting all of Howard's work for the pulp magazine Weird Tales meticulously restored to its original magazine texts. Edited by Paul Herman. Introduction by Mark Finn. Cover by Stephen Fabian.
Customer Reviews:
Campy Sleazy Horror.......2007-01-10
Fascinating in juxtaposition to the highbrow shocks at Weird Tales, these pulp yarns are long on sadistic violence and implied sex while they generally eschew supernatural explanations in favor of all too human depravity (the endings are like those in the Scooby-Doo cartoons, where the phantom always turns out to be the caretaker in a rubber mask and phosphorescent paint). Some of the conceits are shockingly grotesque and were the writing better or the characters more human the brutality would be tough to stomach. As is, this is a complete reproduction of a vintage shock-sheet, right down to the sleazy ads in the back. Worth reading for anyone interested in the evolution of mass media horror or a fan of pulp magazines in general.

I had this book in my cart and ready to buy for months! Amazon kept sending me emails saying that the shipment was going to have to be postponed another week or two and to update my account that this was OK. This kept up for about 4 or 5 emails. Needless to say I eventually gave up. The book obviously isn't available.

It was supposed to have shipped July 15 - UPS 2nd day but, it's the 27th now and UPS still hasn't been contacted to pick it up and, if that's not frustrating enough, I can't find an Amazon customer service email address to make an inquiry to.
Customer Reviews:
....another average Thieves' World adventure...........2007-09-16
I love swords & sorcery. I love thieves & assassins. But, as usual, i'm let down. As a novel, it's just average. The thievery and the swords are barely in here. The dungeon crawl parts are pretty bland. I can't really recommend this unless you really liked the Thieves' World series.
Shadowspawn in a dungeon crawl far from Sanctuary.......2005-10-09
If you followed the Thieves' World series you've read some stories of Hanse Shadowspawn, a cocky young thief with strange friends.
This novel is devoted to Hanse, following his adventures in a little town that once housed a nasty wizard named Corstic. Shadowspawn got rid of Corstic (before the story opens) and most of the town is friendly. Unfortunately some are after Corstic's treasures, and Hanse looks like a handy guy to fetch them out of Corstic's maze, especially if he can be persuaded by the kidnapping of his girl Mignureal...
I like Hanse, I like humor, and I like strange magical mazes as much as anyone. However this reads more like another episode of a weekly serial rather than a full-fledge novel with deeper implications. I rate it a 4 as worth the trouble to read but not something to take instead of a real gem.
Great and inventive way of using magic.......2000-11-30
This book as a great book when it concerns a creative and new way of using magic. Instead of the not too much used or "basic" wizards, a game master can do a lot of new ideas from this book. Also the story line is not hard to get into. Lots of times you come to points that you don't want to go to sleep but want to read on to see what will happen next. I don't want to spoil a lot of the book, but to my opinion the maze chapters where the best.

Knowing God does not come through a program, a study, or a method. Knowing God comes through a relationship with a Person. This is an intimate love relationship with God. Through this relationship, God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways; and He invites you to join Him where He is already at work.
This is the central thesis of Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King. The authors' emphasis on revelation through personal relationship makes faith sound like a true adventure--leading believers to engage with people and circumstances they might otherwise have avoided. The organization of Experiencing God adds to this effect, proceeding step by step through the various ways a believer's relationship with God is deepened (via the Bible, prayer, and the Church, among others). Although there's strong tension between the self-help tone of this book and its hard-line argument that faith is purely a response to God's initiative, many readers will nevertheless find great encouragement in hearing a still, small voice among a vast number of everyday experiences.
Book Description
Experiencing God shows you how to deepen your own personal relationship with God and discover your special place in His Kingdom.

Our Sunday school class just finished using this book for our education about God. It truely is a masterpiece and really made you think more when the dialog of the class covered questions and answers about God. Everyone thought well of the book and the contents. Modern Day A.W.Tozer.......2007-03-18
I went into this book to disprove H.B. as just anouther "closet" charismatic. I was sensitive to anything that might be "unorthodox". Well He is neither charismatic, cultic ,nor heretical. In fact this is a book every Christian needs to read. It brought me back to some old values I had years ago. One being, what should your attitude be when God is at the center of your life. Anouther being, do I want God to bless my work or do I want to be in Gods work. Furthermore H.B. is grounded in the Sovereignty of God and the word of God being our test of what is scriptural. You don't "name it and frame it" you find out Gods will in the matter then believe it. You must buy this book.
