5 out of 5 stars The cliches were invented right here.......2005-08-19

There are Hammett fans and Chandler fans. I am for Hammett, but Chandler's work remains compelling. The plots are nonsense but the metaphors are the purest gold. The opening scenes of THE BIG SLEEP and FAREWELL, MY LOVELY are delicious every time.

4 out of 5 stars Great Stories, Great Edition, Great Book.......2004-01-30

Just my personal opinion, but I think Raymond Chandler is one of the most underrated American authors. Anyone who hasn't read "The Long Goodbye" must be punishing themselves for sins in a past life. "The Big Sleep" and "The High Window" are also excellent novels--good mysteries.

But what really makes Chandler's stories hold up so well is the language: "The Dancers is the kind of club that will dissolution you about what a lot of extra golf money can do for the personality" or "What does it matter, if you're breathing wind and air or oil and water--when you're sleeping the big sleep."

While the plots are wonderful period pieces of a young Los Angeles, the characters are richly drawn. Ever wonder where all those tv detectives came from? Right here.

Chandler's short stories are also supurb. My vote for the single best detective short story of all time is Red Wind--there is so much that happens in such a short story. No one should ever die without reading it....."Trouble is my Business" is also excellent....

Is this a complete collection of his short stories? No--There are a few I would have added, even though several of them were "canibalized" (Chandler's phrase) into later novels. The plot of "Bay City Blues" was built into "Lady in the Lake," but I think that story still holds up on its own. An earlier review also mentioned that "The Pencil" is missing. I can't understand why it was left out. "Killer in the Rain" also became "The Big Sleep," but it still has charm. "No Crime in the Mountains" is not included, but that's not much of a loss.

Not all of the stories in this book work--but that's going to be true with any collection. What is convenient with Library of America is the bindings are wonderful, the print font easy to read, the books lie flat, and will last forever. The list prices are a little steep--but not if you consider the amount of literature you're getting for the cost. I've bought this book three times, and have loaned it out--only for it to never return. But that's why I buy books.

One final note--The previous review mentioned that in this edition Johnny Dahlmas was replaced by Phillip Marlowe in "Red Wind." I was certain it was Johnny, and used Amazon's "Look Inside" to confirm--it is. Chandler had a few detectives, that eventually evolved into Marlowe, and each was a little different. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Dahlmas (I'm probably spelling his name wrong, so the soft spot may be in my head), so if the editor x-ed him out, I'd be furious....

Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories by a great author.......2002-07-19

Chandler is perhaps the greatest writer of detective fiction and a great author period. To ignore these books is to ignore much of what is great about American literature.

Two of his three best novels are included here (The Big Sleep & Farewell, My Lovely).

The stories and great fun, if also rather flawed. My biggest complaint is that are presented here in their republished form, rather than with the original names of the protagonists. (For example, the hero of "Red Wind" is Philip Marlowe here, rather than John Dalmas.) That a fairly minor quibble. Especially good are "Goldfish" and "Red Wind."

The binding is very nice, as are all Library of America editions. My edition has held up quite well after heavy use.

3 out of 5 stars A Vicious Circle.......2002-03-01

"Nothing made it my business except curiosity. But strictly speaking, I hadn't had any business in a month."(21) For Phillip Marlowe, the irresistibly aloof private detective who stars in Chandler's impressive detective novel, Farewell, My Lovely, crime is not something he seems able or willing to avoid. Hitting the streets of Los Angeles in the midst of the American gambling craze of the 1930's, Marlowe finds himself an inextricable player in a search for knowledge of past and present crimes and criminals.
Though he appears, on the surface, to be little more than a nosy, bumbling "private dick," his successful unraveling of a closely interwoven crowd of crooks proves, as one suspect cop observes, that Marlowe "played...smart....You must got something we wasn't told about." (228) Keeping his cards in his hand for most of the noel, Chandler shows that both he and Marlowe are "smart," leading the reader on a circuitous trail that shakes out only in the novel's final pages.
The story begins with a happenstance encounter between Marlowe and an ex-con called "Moose" Malloy. Marlowe cannot resist pursuing the suspicious-looking hulk of a man and soon finds himself both running after and from a variety of shady characters. In the course of his private investigations, Marlowe survives several near brushes with death, getting "sapped" by thugs near the novel's start, pumped full of opium in a suspicious hospital-like place, and stealthily boarding a closely guarded gambling boat to confront an infamous mobster in the middle of the night. In the end, Marlowe succeeds at untangling the web of murders and crimes that keep him running throughout the novel, but not before giving the reader the run-around as well. Chandler's smart, articulate prose lends itself well to the captivating story and intriguing characters that combine to make this a must-read for fans of detective fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Good, good, GOOD editorial choice here!.......2001-12-02

Earlier anthologies of Raymond Chandler's works mostly center upon what have come to be known as his 'big four' or earliest novels -- The Big Sleep, Farewell My Lovely, The High Window, The Lady In The Lake -- or upon his later, and admittedly (with the possible exception of The Little Sister) 'inferior' works. Chandler's earlier short stories ( many of which he "cannibalized," to use his word, for the material in his subsequent novels) are normally treated as a separate genre altogether.

This particular collection, rightly, combines Chandler's first three novels with the best of his earlier short stories, recognizing the thematic unity in those works. (Good as it is, "The Lady In The Lake" demands to be treated separately from Chandler's earlier efforts.)

Chances are, if you're reading this, you've read most, if not all, of Chandler's Phillip Marlowe novels. You may as well have read many, if not all, of the short stories presented here. But have you read these novels, and these short stories, TOGETHER in this context? Likely not. But you deserve to.

In the short stories, for example, there are protagonists named John Evans, Ted Carmody and Tony Resick (the last two of which, interestingly, inhabit locations which were most likely Los Angeles' Hotel Mayfair, with which Chandler had more than a nodding familiarity). And when, in Chandler's writings, did they meld themselves into what would be his penultimate creation, Phillip Marlowe?

And at which point did Chandler begin to write, as fellow writer Ross McDonald termed it, "like a slumming angel . . ."? The answers to both questions may well lie here, in this collection.

Pick up this collection! Read it! Discover the material anew!

    Book Description

Agatha Christie is more than the most popular mystery writer of all time. In a career that spans over half a century, her name is synonymous with brilliant deception, ingenious puzzles, and the surprise denouement. By virtually inventing the modern mystery novel she has earned her title as the Queen of Crime. Curious? Then you're invited to read....SPARKLING CYANIDEIt's been less than a year since beautiful heiress Rosemary Barton took her own life during a birthday dinner in her honor. Her husband George never believed that his fun-loving wife would commit suicide-especially now that he's received two anonymous letters that suggest cold-blooded murder. One implicates even George himself. It's true he long-suffered Rosemary's infidelities. But what about her embittered sister who was left out of the family will? Or any one of Rosemary's secret lovers, not to mention their betrayed wives? Not one of them has ever forgotten Rosemary. Nor has any one of them ever forgiven her. But only one of them killed her.... AUTHORBIO: AGATHA CHRISTIE is the world's best known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies.Agatha Christie also wrote under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie died in 1976.

E-book exclusive extra: Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on Sparkling Cyanide.

Six people sit down to a sumptuous meal at a table laid for seven. A sprig of rosemary -- 'rosemary for remembrance' -- marks the empty place. It is the first anniversary of the horrific death by cyanide-laced champagne of the beautiful and troublesome Rosemary Barton. The assembled guests are the same participants at the meal a year prior, and Rosemary's widower, George Barton, is determined to prove that one of them is a murderer. But George's dinner party, and his plans for justice, will go terribly awry, as another death will come to haunt this date.

Colonel Race of the British Secret Service, friend of Hercule Poirot (and a featured player in Cards on the Table and Death on the Nile), is on the scene to investigate.

5 out of 5 stars A treat for Col. Race fans.......2005-06-27

Charming socialite Rosemary Barton had committed suicide during her birthday party. Or had she been murdered? She had been a bit depressed after a prolonged bout of the flu but Rosemary had everything to live for, she was young, rich, had both a devoted husband and a lover. And why choose a busy glamorous restaurant during a dinner party held in her honor? Over the next few months doubts began to surface over Rosemary's death, but if she had been murdered then who could have done it but a guest at her party - her husband, adoring younger sister, loyal secretary, friend, her lover or his unsuspecting wife? Then the second murder happened.....

This 1943 mystery (also published as REMEMBERED DEATH) is told from the points of view of starting with Iris, Rosemary's younger sister, shifting to the other members of the ill-fated dinner party. The detective called in here to solve the crime is the mysterious Col. Race.

As always with a Christie novel the clues are all fairly laid out for the reader to follow, the mystery is clever with some interesting twists and turns along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Still My Favorite Christie.......2004-02-02

"Sparkling Cyanide," also published as "Remembered Death" was the first book by Agatha Christie that I ever read, and it is still my favorite.
The story centers around the death of Rosemary Barton. What is so interesting about this story is the fact that it is a year after Rosemary has died and the reader needs to piece together what actually happened through remembrances of others.
Whether you're just looking for a good way to spend a rainy afternoon or you're looking for a challenging mystery, this is a story every Christie fan should read.

4 out of 5 stars Murder Out of the Past.......2003-06-09

Also known as REMEMBERED DEATH, this 1943 Christie novel is not among the author's most memorable work, nor is it among her most celebrated--but it is a solid piece of work all the same, and one that shows Christie toying with a favorite theme: a curious death in the past arouses suspicion that erupts into the present tense. A year previously London beauty Rosemary Barton unexpectedly dropped dead at dinner in an exclusive London restaurant--and when cyanide was found in both her champagne glass and in her evening bag, her death is ruled a suicide. But with the passage of time her surviving husband becomes suspicious and determines to restage the dinner party with an eye toward uncovering the truth. The result is yet another death--and once more cyanide is in the champagne glass.

As in many of her novels, Christie carefully limits the field of suspects to those actually at the table, and it soon transpires that virtually every one present had a motive for Rosemary's murder--and would have a motive to kill again. Is it Rosemary's sister Iris, who inherited a fortune upon her older sister's death? Rosemary's illicit lover, whose career could be ruined by scandal? Or perhaps his wife, who might have killed to save her marriage? Or is there a darker criminal element at work?

Although this novel reached the screen with David Suchet playing Hercule Poriot, fans of Suchet's performances should not be misled: Poriot does not appear in this particular novel, and the detective of note is Col. Race, who pursues the killer through an emotional interest in Rosemary's sister Iris. And indeed, this is one of Christie's more romantically-laced tales, with the story hinging on the various romantic and sexual entanglements of the various characters. The writing is solid and unexpectedly moody for a Christie novel, and while a few hardcore Christie fans may be able to spot the killer before the book's conclusion, most readers will be taken considerably by surprise. A fun, enjoyable read.

    --GFT (Amazon Reviewer)--

5 out of 5 stars Remembered Death: Rosemary, for remembrance.......2002-02-17

If you're interested in an audio edition, I recommend the unabridged narration by Robin Bailey, who's always good. At least one film adaptation exists under the title _Sparkling Cyanide_, made in 1983, but with the action moved to California. (However, the top-billed screenwriter was Sue Grafton.) The book's original title is _Remembered Death_, which better describes the story.

Six people are remembering Rosemary Barton, who died a year ago; the 3rd-person viewpoint changes in each of the first six chapters to give us their knowledge and opinions about her and her death. Each attended her final birthday party at the Luxembourg, and saw her die of cyanide poisoning. The verdict was suicide while of unsound mind (depression after influenza, since no other motive was apparent.)

Iris was always put in the shade by her glamorous, beautiful elder sister during their mother's lifetime, as their mother concentrated on Rosemary's first Season and subsequent marriage, but she knew her turn would come. Even their honorary uncle Paul left all his money to Rosemary, to go to Iris only after Rosemary's death.

Ruth Lessing, the young, perfect secretary to Rosemary's husband, George, organized his life, but certainly not his marriage. George even entrusted her with the task of paying off Victor Drake, Rosemary's unsatisfactory cousin, and seeing him off to South America. Victor amused himself by making Ruth see just how much she disliked featherhead Rosemary, and how much better off George would have been if he'd married Ruth instead.
Stephen Farraday, ambitious M.P., married the woman who could best further his career; when he met Rosemary, he succumbed to emotional madness and began an affair with her. In the end, he regretted it when Rosemary began to speak of divorce and remarriage, which would break him politically. Sandra Farraday, suffering the tortures of the damned, wonders how Stephen can imagine that she didn't know.

Tony Browne, one of Rosemary's social hangers-on, was alarmed that (through disreputable Victor) she knew about his criminal record; with so much less brains and character than Iris, she might give him away at any time.

Finally, George Barton, a middle-aged financier who deeply loved Rosemary, and who knew that she married him because she wanted a stable home life with a man she liked, rather than loved, lost both brightness and pain when she died. He's become suspicious of the circumstances of her death, and is staging another dinner party at the Luxembourg with the same guests. Colonel Race refused to attend.

The party ends with George Barton's murder (cyanide again), and Race gets involved in the investigation when he reveals George's suspicions to the police. The stage setting of the murder(s?) is much like that in the Poirot story "Yellow Iris", incidentally, but don't let that lead you astray.

This would be a good novel even without the question of the second death; the characters are developed beautifully, and the opening gambit of changing viewpoint is lovely. There are other aspects to care about: the Farradays' marriage, the developing love affair between Iris and Tony Browne, impressive Ruth Lessing, and even Iris' gullible aunt (who has spoiled her son Victor all his life).

                      4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2003-05-05

                      Upside
                      - The prelude is pretty entertaining and exemplifies the general attitude of many young Lasombra
                      - The clan's history is delivered in sessions narrated by various Lasombra (concluded by a Lasombra antitribu's suicide note, strangely enough)
                      - Details how the majority of Lasombra go about observing, testing and training recruits
                      - Briefly desribes Lasombra culture and its many, many unofficial "factions" as well as official ones and the supposedly non-existant Lasombra antitribu
                      - The basic break-down of procedures for dealing with the Courts of Blood is rather helpful
                      - The Lasombra's comments on the Sabbat bloodlines and the other clans are more informed than average (but, perhaps unsurprisingly, there's nothing of consenquence said about the Kiasyd)
                      - Takes a closer look at the basic Obtenebration powers and provides more advanced ones as well as interesting suggestions of ways to approach peculiarities of a Lasombra's manifestation of Obtenebration
                      - Explains a little about the occult and Abyss mysticism
                      - There are actually a few appealing Merits and Flaws (Controllable Night Sight, Death's Reflection)
                      - There are several pseudo-templates of variations of the Path of Night as it's presented in the core rulebook and some of them look like they'd be very interesting to adopt
                      - There are some great character templates (the Accuser, Angry Young Man, Successful Mass-Embracee, Harpy, Student of the Abyss)
                      - The sample brood of mentally-unbalanced Lasombra computer hackers is quite interesting

                      Downside
                      - There's relatively not that many notable Lasombra mentioned
                      - The book's formatting oversights do not make finding specific entries any easier

                      4 out of 5 stars Solid Resource.......2003-05-04

I developed an interest in the Lasombra clan from reading about them in various works of fiction by White Wolf authors. This book was wonderful in providing more background on the beginnings, history, and beliefs of the clan known as 'The Keepers'. It is a good resource for getting into the mindset of a Lasombra character. I am not a role-player, but if I were I would recommend this book based on the many templates provided. They start with mortals from all walks of life and give you something substantial with which to begin to build your character as it enters the World of Darkness. The material is interesting, the artwork supports the material, and overall - it's easy to understand. If you want to learn more about the clan, then this is a book you will want to add to your library of resources.

4 out of 5 stars Be Afraid of the Dark!!!.......2001-03-06

The new CLANBOOK LASOMBRA offers wonderfully details- clan factions (including antitribu), Lasombra skepticism of origin legends, Chinese bloodlines, Embrace traditions, how the Occult rating relates to Obtenebration, and a better sense of Montano and Gratiano. It has many standard series features- MET statistics, character templates, merits and flaws, a discussion of clan disciplines, a sample pack (Lasombra computer hackers!), and noted Lasombra (less basic but more multicultural than the original).

It's also the first new CLANBOOK on the Sabbat. It emphasizes Humanity over Paths of Enlightenment but gives extensive treatment to the distinctively Lasombra Path of Night. (Other VtM books assign important Lasombra to the Path of Power and the Inner Voice- not even mentioned here, unfortunately.) It describes Path of Night variations (the Path isn't written out here so you must refer back to VtM's basic rules) and introduces Abyss Mysticism, a practice by which Lasombra merge with darkness.

An improvement in the new CLANBOOK: LASOMBRA is the emphasis on young Lasombra instead of elders, making the clan seem less cartoonishly pompous. It features Asian, African and Northern European Lasombra not the usual Spanish Lasombra. Rather than being traditionalistic, the Lasombra seem cut off from their own history because so many elders died during the Anarch Revolt.

A minor problem is that there's almost too much introduced for atmosphere and basic themes to fully develop and not enough follow-up on earlier material- characters like Medina and Lopez, for example. Also, the original CLANBOOK series was more interesting visually than the new one. The original LASOMBRA featured white type on (appropriately) black pages. (LIBELLUS SANGUINIS I's Lasombra chapter also does this in places.) Darkness oozed over the page from the pictures illustrating Obtenebration. The new CLANBOOK: LASOMBRA uses only conventional white pages and the art loses impact because of this.

5 out of 5 stars Adds fresh depth and dimension to the Keepers.......2001-02-18

Packed to the brim with in-depth information about the Lasombra, there is simply an astounding volume of knowledge in this book: Everything from why the Lasombra behave in such hideous fashion to why they love the sea. The motivations of the clan are revealed- the Lasombra are no longer cardboard cutouts, but are shown to have believable drives and goals. They may be monsters, but they are monsters possessed of dark nobility and great dedication.

For example, some Lasombra believe that God created vampires to serve Him by tormenting mortal sinners; these vampires believe they are carrying out God's will by inflicting pain and suffering. Other Keepers seek to discern the secrets of the Abyss, the primordial essence of darkness. Some few even see themselves as the driving force behind mankind- the shepherds that keep the mortal sheep in line and productively occupied (from a Cainite point of view, that is).

New Lasombra secrets are also divulged in this book. Several variants of the Path of Night are given, and the mystical importance of the Abyss is detailed. Further, the book looks at the Lasombra clan Disciplines from the Keepers' perspective, and explores the uses and significance of Obtenebration. A detailed history of the Lasombra clan is given, from the ancient legacy of the Antediluvian to the modern nights.

All told, this is an outstanding piece of work. Before reading this book, I knew next to nothing about the Lasombra clan. Their brief write-up in the core rulebook portrays them as little more than generic masters of EEEE-vil, and I always thought the Lasombra were rather dull. That changed when I read the new Clanbook: Lasombra. The writing is excellent- in particular, I loved the narrative history of the clan- and there's something in this book for everyone.

This is a great clanbook ,when I finally got it I expected some of the flaws the other clanbooks had,but MAN....this is GREAT!! there is a lot of info about the lasombra antediluvian after the second city and even speculations about his strange final death ,some tips about the antitribu and even a description about clan relations whith the other sabbat members. The art is great (shy and trabbold are fantastic man.)even if I would like to have the traits of moncada and lucita on the book, but at least they appear, some mayor disciplines could have been added too ,but y'know...it's white wolf man (I had written another review abut this book but amazon did'nt printed it,I wonder why dude???)

WW did it again. They came out with yet another gaming clanbook that just plain ROCKS. It's been said before that WW was losing it's touch but I must disagree...this is a must have for anyone who plays the game and especially those that play sabbat or Lasombra..It takes you into the world of the sabbat and the Lasombra. It doesn't touch on the antitribu but why should it? After all the main game resources even point out that in the WoD there are not many anti's of the clan...It's a great resource for young players and even those who have been around will enjoy reading this story...it takes you inside the mind of the Keepers and their shadows...what evil lurks? I urge you to read this chronicle and tell me just how frightened of the shadows you become..

This is a excellent sourcebook, but its lack of comments in the Lasombra Antitribu keeps it from achiving 5 stars. At least, WW has corrected it by including that description in the new Guide to the Camarilla.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice, very dark, and very compelling.......1999-12-21

This is one of the first clanbooks I read. It is also one of the most revealing. While the Lasombra are initially made to be a dangerous, yet one dimensional foe, this book clearly shows their true powers.

Can't even trust them shadows when ya around'em. That's what some Nosferatu friend of mine used to say. Died of a Shroud of Night, poor wretch. And that Assamite dude back at the Tremere clan book, hey, he's just as bad, don't believe anything else. He poses as a Lasombra at every chance. Boy, he's got it, man ! He can stalk you in the shadows like few Lasombra I've seen. Better keep quiet. Well, anyway, Lasombra are not exactly what I would call a fallen angel, although some of them refer as that to them. Don't get me wrong, they ain't devils either, not half as bad and mad as the Baali, but, you know, kinda like not the people you wanna hang around with the whole time. You wouldn't wanna end up as some midnight snack, ya know... The good thing about the Camarilla is that they abolish sucking your brother. Good thing about the Sabbath: You know they will. Keep about a jaw's space between you and the Lasombra next table, and you should be able to have your drink in peace. As soon as you step outside, though..... the Marquis, vampire hunter and leech himself

1 out of 5 stars Why can't you give a book zero stars?!?.......1999-03-15

All I have to say about the Lasombra is that they are all a bunch of self-righteous idiots who think they are god's gift to the Sabbat. Every word you read of this book makes you want to vomit! I can't believe such arogence exists ouside of clan Tzimisce, I mean, DAMN! Not even the TREMERE are that self-absorbed. Stupider than the do-boys (akashic brotherhood), reading this book made me a worse person. Just to prove how terrible a person I am after reading this SH*T, I'm goin to play a Lasombra in the next chronicle I'm in!

                      Book Description

As many parents and teachers know, people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) can be difficult to motivate, especially when asked to learn something new. Finding the right incentives to support learning is one of the crucial first steps in teaching them new skills. Written by two autism specialists with nearly 50 years combined experience, INCENTIVES FOR CHANGE explores systems for determining what incentives children and adults with ASD will find rewarding, and ways to use motivation as a tool to affect their learning and behavior.

This easy-to-follow guide explains a variety of motivational methods and systems, including how to:

                      --Identify potential incentives

--Transition from concrete to intangible incentives

--Use reinforcements or rewards to increase motivation

--Teach a child to "mand" or express what he wants

--Understand "establishing operation" and other concepts that affect motivation

--Motivate children with ASD to make choices

--Implement token systems to enable children to delay reinforcement

                      --Encourage independence and self-management skills

What skills and behaviors can be taught using the motivational techniques presented in this book? Parents and teachers will find methods for teaching a wide variety of social skills, such as interacting playfully with others and making eye contact, and life skills such as getting dressed and doing chores. These techniques can also help students with ASD learn academic subjects in school and control interfering behaviors like hand flapping or rocking back and forth.

INCENTIVES FOR CHANGE contains many real-life case studies of families who are using motivational systems in a variety of situations to help their child learn and gain a greater measure of independence. When put to use, these systems can enhance learning opportunities for every person on the autism spectrum from the youngest to the oldest, and from the least to most receptive to change.
