Best tool ever for inline and ice speed skaters.......2007-08-31
This book is thorugh and even those of us that are completely uneducated about athletics and how to improve in them can understand clearly what is written in this book. I was afraid it would be too technical but it caters to all levels of knowledge. I am very impressed. I plan to start impleting these practices very soon.
Inline Speed Skating.......2005-05-31
From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.
I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.
Get speedier on skates!.......2003-04-12
A must have. Loaded with information and great pictures. Also very technical training schedules for the serious skaters. Not too much for short trackers but still alot of useful skating information.
Great book of novice and elite skaters.......2002-08-01
This is a great book for anyone involved in in-line or ice speedskating. Being a speedskater myself, I have had much success using the book. It is great for novice and elite skaters. The book offers a lot of information regarding techinique and training. I hope others have or will have as much success using this book as I have.
A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY SPEEDSKATERS LIBRARY!!!
Very Good Book.......2002-07-30
This is a wonderful book for those who participate in the sport of speedskating. I have had a lot of success using the techiniques and advice in this book. You can be a novice or elite skater and this book can still help you out so much. This book gives detailed explinations of ice and in-line speedskating. I hope this book has and will help others in their speedskating career.

In January 1981, a group of San Francisco skateboarders put together the first issue of Thrasher magazine. Today, Thrasher is bigger and better than ever—its name synonymous with both skateboarding's roots and constant evolution. Marking Thrasher's anniversary, this jam-packed retrospective recounts skateboarding's twists and turns of the last two decades and offers a glimpse at its thriving future. New and old school skaters alike will love Thrasher: Skate and Destroy. Not only does it cover the first twenty-five years of the magazine, reprinting the best of the original columns—"Photograffiti," "Zounds," "Trash," among others—but it will feature unpublished photos, rejected covers, interview outtakes, and detailed profiles. Action-packed photos capture legendary skaters such as: Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Andrew Reynolds, Tony Alva, Mike Carroll, and Lance Mountain. The definitive guide to the history and development of skateboarding, no other book will take you as close to the risk taking, bone breaking world of what has since become the world's fastest growing extreme sport. With an emphasis on the current trends that will especially appeal to today's hundreds of thousands of skaters, this will be the skateboarding bible for fans of all ages and levels. Slashdog POV.......2007-01-05
As someone who started skating even before Thrasher published their first issue, and who has an extensive collection of Thrasher magazines, I too was a little underwhelmed by this book. Nevertheless, it's a worthy effort at summing up what Thrasher was and is.
The print quality is top notch, and the photography is excellent. Many pages are occupied by short bios of "Legends", skaters that have left indelible marks on the art of skateboarding over time. These offer little more than polish on the already established fame/infamy of those mentioned, though.
I was expecting more of Thrasher's seminal articles reprinted, but besides that pillar of skateboard writing, "Skate and Destroy", from 1982 they are few and far between.
All that aside - Thrasher remains the truest, most meaningful print expression of skateboarding. Don't forget - Thrasher was there when skateboarding appeared dead to the eyes of the world at large, and they're still here.
Not Enough Meat.......2006-06-01
I'm a 32 yr old skater who started in 86. Naturally, I read Thrasher without fail, every month, up until the big fallout\decline in late 92 when the culture took a nosedive into 40mm wheels, massive jeans, and pressure flips (all of which I was admittedly guilty of myself). I was so excited for the release of "Skate and Destroy', that I was almost desperate for it. It promised to have classic articles reprinted, as well as rare, unpublished material. Generally, I've been quite pleased with all the skate related books coming out- "Built to Grind", while somewhat propaganda heavy, is an extensive bible for Indy, "Disposable" is an indisputable masterpiece, "Art, Skateboarding and Life" is a meticulous look at New Deal and the rise of Element, The DC book is a wealth of knowledge, Mullen's book is a touching diary, and even "Occupation, Skateboarder" is a great read, whether you care for Hawk or not. I even picked up the Vancouver Skate Exhibit book and was happy with it. I thought there was no way that Thrasher could fail, but compared to what they promise, they miss the mark.
When you first crack it open you think- wow- but that's just the initial rush of euphoria\nostalgia and the pop, graphic heavy nature of the design. The book's all fluff, with little meat. What you get is page after page of photos, most of them appearing to be unpublished shots, with small blurbs. The reprinted information is very tiny, and generally runs at the bottom of the pages, as more of a design border, than anything you can actually read. I guess that's my problem- there's almost nothing to read in this. It doesn't have the promised, reprinted articles- where's the notes from the underground... the trash on board... the skarfing material.... etc.?
I just read the latest issue of Juice, and it took me about three days to get through it all. I was transported to other places and other times within those pages. "Skate and Destroy"... I'll thumb through this, and be over it in about twenty minutes.

Marriage is out of the question!
A successful horse breeder and self-proclaimed rake, Harry Lester samples women like wines. But after having his heart trampled upon by someone he actually loved, he has no intention of falling for a woman again, let alone be ensnared by the trap of marriage. Now, with a large inheritance to his name, Harry knows that he'd best start running from London's matchmaking mothers and widows.
Harry heads for the racing town of Newmarket, only to encounter Mrs. Lucinda Babbacombe, a beautiful, independent widow. And before he knows it, Harry vows to protect Lucinda from the town full of lonely gambling men, despite her refusal to accept his countless offers of help. Lucinda is extraordinary -- an intelligent, tender, marriage worthy woman -- but will Harry let himself be taken prisoner in this most passionate of traps?

Truly an unwilling conquest 3 1/2 stars.......2007-09-23
I love Stephanie Laurens and have read (and collected) just about all of her Cynster and Bastion Club Books but honestly if I had started with this book I cant be sure if I would have become the fan I am today. Dont get me wrong its an OK book but not what I have come to expect. I can only excuse it by saying it was one of her earlier books and released through Harlequin Mills & Boon London.
From the first meeting of Harry and Lucinda they are intrigue by each other. Later after becoming intimate with her, Harry decides that they should marry but Lucinda refuses because she wants Harry to love her first. However Harry has been burned in a relationship before and refuses to risk the same thing happening again. Lucinda soon despairs that he will ever express his love and starts to accept that her love may have to be enough. Eventually Harry explains that the manner in which he acted was to show proof of his devotion and love.
I found the hero too restrained for my liking, too impassive. Yes he appoints himself as her protector and thereby shows that he does care but he refused to show any emotions, except for annoyance. He does not romance Lucinda or does anything to show she is his world and that he needs her to make his life meaningful. What he says was proof of his love seems more more like proof of his possessiveness towards Lucinda.
Conclusion: Good plot, well written but not enough passion and romance.
Okay...story please!.......2007-04-04
Like the other reviewers, I felt SL has a lot more to say than this book represents. I don't know what happened, but it lost it's momentum rather quickly. The first part was good but then something happened and then poof! The last two or three chapters were a blur because I turned the pages without reading until I came to a page that had something to add. No, this isn't a good one but I will continue to be a fan, and not judge her on one not-so-good book.
Lots of blue and snorting.......2006-11-17
Why does Lucinda only wear blue? Why does Aunt Em, Harry and later, Lucinda (whom we are led to believe are proper ladies and gentleman) snort their way through the second half of the book?
Stephanie Laurens defintely has a way with words. She doesn't have much in the way of a story line, though, in An Unwilling Conquest. Harry's slow, drawn out "proof" of himself to Lucinda was anti-climactic to say the least. The heroine danger factor and love scenes were so mildly written it seemed as though the author didn't care to entice her reader much. And Lucinda's "will he or won't he" woes wore thin rather quickly.
I found this book was only slightly entertaining, and I know Ms. Laurens has written much better.
I was left wanting with with one........2006-11-12
Stephanie Laurens' writing is easy and enjoyable. The story could have been better. I was disappointed. I just did not get that "happy feeling" in the end. Not a winner for me.
Love Stephanie Laurens.......2006-07-22
I love all Stephanie Laurens' books, and this was no exception. Only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars were I knew what to expect and I always wish her boosk were longer, since I get so involved with the characters. If you are a Laurens fan, you won't be disappointed; if you are new to her books, you should probably start with one of the earlier books and work you way up, as there are a lot of repeating characters.

Another breed of shifters...........2002-05-09
Just what we needed. Another sourcebook on another group of creatures that have the need to change at a whim. It would appear the writers at White Wolf didn't learn from their Rokea ( *knock-knock* Land shark) nonsense and slapped together a group of sneaky snakes that can also shift. Lump them with the changing alligators, and wolves, and lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my. The book itself is not as poorly written as some of the shifter material WW shovels out anymore, but it comes across as somewhat unnecessary. The role explained for the Nagah in the World of Darkness can certainly be filled by another breed, or camp within another breed. As with any creative storyteller you can certainly weave the Nagah into your stories, but you could fill the same stories with any of the other numerous shifter breeds already out there. The book is fine for what it is. Though it feels as though the shifter writers at White Wolf have been reaching for a reason to work with these past few releases. Nothing has been inspired, and Nagah is no exception to that sense of apathy.
Great book for last.......2002-03-26
The Nagah are cool. Everyone likes the idea of Assassins, and the snake is the coolest animal to do the job. They are probubly one of the most complex group of shifters as well. People believe that they are extinct, but they still conduct their duties.
See, the Nagah have the job of playing the judge (the every supernatural group in a White-Wolf game has). They are basically a group that hunts down offending shapeshifters and plays judge, jury and exicutioner. Of course, due to past circumstances this can only be done by a group of Nagah, and as such they travel in groups of three.
Rules wise these guys are monsters. They have Venom which essentially makes them killers without anything else, as even one bite of the venom, could kill any person who can't soak aggravated damage. They are also adept at being sneaky and have numerous gifts to hide their passing. These guys would seem perfect for powergamming but ironically, they are rather limited in fighting purpose. This book is a rather good book for a person who really wants to spice up their Werewolf game.
Last Changing breed book, too bad.......2001-08-12
White Wolf overall has done a great job with the other were-creatures and this book is no exspection. If you ever wanted to play white wolf campaign with a cloak and dagger approach this is it. Too bad they don't plan on making any more material like this, the changing breed books are some of the best stuff white wolf has put out.
The last Changing breed...and one of the best!.......2001-08-10
I have been waiting for this book for a LONG time, and it was worth the wait. They did an excellent job on the wereserpents, showing how they fit into the World of Darkness, and how to include them in your games. Definately worth the money if you play Werewolf, to play a Nagah or to use one as an NPC while running a game.
Book Description
The fourth leading cause of death in the United States, COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, affects an estimated 35 million Americans. Yet only half are aware that they are seriously ill. Life and Breath
, by Dr. Neil Schachter, is the first book that alerts people to their risks for COPD and explains the steps they need to take to prevent the development of this debilitating and often fatal lung disease.
Life and Breath begins witha quick quiz to rate your risk for COPD. It explains the steps of a complete pulmonary work-up and teaches you about the painless, inexpensive six-second test that can save your life.
We all know that diet, exercise, and environmental changes can reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. Now, for the first time, Life and Breath provides the medical and lifestyle steps that can prevent, treat, and sometimes reverse the signs and symptoms of chronic lung disease. Dr. Schachter discusses the role of antioxidants in treating asthma and chronic bronchitis, explains why indoor exercise is better if you have irritable airways, and provides a supportive, simple, and successful plan to quit smoking.
Life and Breath takes you on a tour of your own home, pointing out sources of irritants and allergens that can cause pulmonary problems. Dr. Schachter explains how to improve indoor air quality to protect your lungs at any age, on the job, in your home, and on the road.
If you are one of the 15 million Americans with asthma, or one of the 94 million current or former smokers in this country, Life and Breath is the one book you need to stay alive and well.

Useful book.......2007-05-06
A book of this sort is good insofar as it is technically accurate, and also if it zeroes in on your especial situation. As a non-scientist I am unble to judge the former, and my situation is that I was recently diagnosed with early emphysema. But I quit smoking 13 years ago, so all the pages devoted to quitting smoking were irrelevant to me. I have, however, spent a lifetime with heavy smokers, starting before my birth -- not that I can do anything about that now. Thanks, Mom and Dad, colleagues, friends, and current and former husbands!
There is a lot in this book about COPD, its causes, its course, varieties of treatment, & strateies for living with it. It is easy to understand and has a glosary, bibliography for further research, and good index.
Fortunately my condition has been arrested with the use of Spireva [mentioned in the book],but I will keep my copy just in case.
Excellent book for anyone with COPD or asthma!.......2005-06-18
I picked this book up because I was concerned about my husband, who has had a morning cough for about 2 years. The book was the catalyst to a whole lifestyle change for him! We went to his doctor, had him tested for COPD (he is in the early stages), he quit smoking, we ripped out our carpet, we've changed our diet.... I can't say enough about the value of this book. Read it!!!
Life and Breath.......2004-03-04
Finally, a book to help patients suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The families of people suffering from COPD will have a better understanding of the disease after reading this book.
At the present time, COPD is not curable. However, by reading Life and Breath, it will help those suffering from COPD live longer, happier and healthier lives. The book will teach us how to better control COPD.
One is taught and is given a better understanding of the complete chest workup. Eating habits are gone over extensively, and we learn that by changing our diet we can breath easier and more normally.
Pulmonary protection and physical work outs will allow us to breath easier and realize it is never too late to give up bad habits. Treatment strategies for both asthma and COPD are outlined in the book and are extremely important.
I recommend this bood to doctors, COPD patients and their families.

Well worth the read...........2003-09-21
I first saw Dr. Schacter being interviewed on the Today Show in April while I was home recouperating from my third round of pneumonia in about 15 years. I ordered the book immediately and read it within a day of receiving it.
The information contained in the book was extremely helpful in educating me about how serious a chronic cough can be and how important it is to get appropriate treatment for anything that is related to your lungs on a timely basis. My sister is a severe asthmatic and I ordered a copy for her and sent it to her in California.
Following my bout of pneumonia, I have learned that I have a pulmonary nodule and again found the information in the book helpful as I have begun to navigate the ramifications of that health issue. When I was first diagnosed, I also emailed Dr. Schacter some questions and he responded to me personally which was certainly "above and beyond."
I highly recommend this book to anyone anyone with any pulmonary issues.
This book could save your life.......2003-08-25
This is an excellent book for anyone suffering from or who has just acquired a breathing disorder. I bought it after coming down with a case of bronchitis that would not go away after several weeks. The book helped me realize the dangers of not getting the proper treatment for COPD. It also helped me be a partner with my doctor in the treatment of it. I understand the treatment decisions, the drugs used (and not used) and what to do to prevent a recurrance. The cost of the book is a small price to pay for being a knowledgeable patient.
