Loving Life.......2007-05-13
Some People, Some Other Place by J. California Cooper is one of many books that I highly recommend. This is a deeply spirited woman that have the gift to weave any story of love, plan, and suffering into a spiritual based message of survival. I'm proud to recommend this book or any other works from this author. Five stars does not come close to giving this book an accurate rating. 25 stars would be more appropriate!!!

some people, some other place.......2007-02-19
I belong to a book club comprised of mostly school teachers and other professional older women. 21 members read this book and not 1! liked it.
Nice Read.......2006-11-10
At first for me it was a difficult read but as soon as I got into the characters (Madame & Eula-too) I felt was able to visualize what the story was trying to tell me. I read the book for the start of a book club that was started at my job and it seemed to be a good hit. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed The Color Purple or The Bluest Eye.
Wonderful Book.......2006-10-21
This was the first book that I've read by Cooper, and am very pleased. This book was just absolutely wonderful. I thought this book was great from start to finish. I have since gone out a purchased several more of her books.

Christmas Cookie Murder A Lucy Stone Mystery.......2007-06-27
Several years ago, a friend gave me this book to read and I have enjoyed all of Lelie Meier Lucy Stone Mystery books. This is one of my favorites. A great treat for the Holidays!

Christmas Cookies Can be a Killer!.......2006-05-07
In the 6th book in the Lucy Stone mystery series, Christmas has become overwhelming for Lucy once again. One of her favorite traditions of the holiday season, the cookie exchange, doesn't seem like such a good idea this year. Between friends moving away, a divorce, and cancer, it does not appear that the "cookie exchange regulars" will be in the mood this year. Determined to push through, Lucy gives in and invites new friends to the cookie exchange. But, this group is not as cohesive as the last. One member brings MADD pamphlets to be distributed, and another confesses that her son has been arrested for drunk driving. When an argument breaks out over a recipe that two members brought, Lucy knows there is more to the story. She quickly learns that Lee Cummings and her husband Steve are going through a messy divorce. Tucker Whitney, having brought the same cookies as Lee, is the other woman involved in the divorce. And when Tucker ends up dead the day after the exchange, Lucy begins to realize that the town is hiding many secrets...and someone is willing to kill to keep them.
Like a previous book in the series, Tippy Toe Murder, this book involves a serious issue in society. This time it is drug use. Drugs even affect Lucy's own family, and it becomes clear that the Stone family isn't always as perfect as they seem. I like that fact that Lucy and her family are real. Other cozies oftentimes show unrealistically "perfect" children that willingly do chores, get good grades, and don't misbehave. Lucy deals with school issues, college applications, and drug use by a family member in this latest installment. She juggles family life with a part time job, shopping for the holidays, and keeping her family fed. For some readers, these aspects of her life may seem boring. However, I love the fact that Lucy has a life that many moms can relate to.
If you enjoy the Jane Jeffry series by Jill Churchill, give this series a try.
The first book in the series is called "Mistletoe Murder". Enjoy!
Murder, Drugs, and Christmas Cookies.......2005-12-05
In "Christmas Cookie Murder", the sixth entry in the Lucy Stone Mystery series, the idyllic town of Tinker's Cove, Maine is preparing for its annual Christmas celebrations when the town is shocked by the strangulation of pretty 20-year-old Tucker Whitney. Rumors begin to fly that Tucker was having an affair with the town's dentist, who eventually finds himself accused of the murder. However, Lucy Stone, mom of four and part-time reporter for the local Pennysaver, gets herself involved in solving the mystery again.
An undercurrent running through this episode is a rampage of drug use in Tinker's Cove. Lucy discovers her own teenaged son Toby smoking marijuana with his best friend, and then finds that the town seems to be adrift in a sea of drugs. To make matters worse, the new acting sheriff, who officially has "zero tolerance" for teen-aged drinking and drugs, doesn't seem to be able to stop the flow of drugs into town.
I've enjoyed all the Lucy Stone mysteries that I've read; however, this one was a bit predictable for me. Still, I enjoyed the small-town ambience and characters very much. If you're looking for a quick, light holiday mystery, you'll enjoy this one.
A Waste of Time and Money.......2004-08-28
This book, like the others in this series that I have read, can hardly be termed "murder mysteries." The protagonist, Lucy Stone, never seem to solve the crimes. Instead, she accidnetly blunders into trouble and the murderer then promptly attacks or kidnaps her.
Like may readers, a book is as escape for me into another world. Lucy Stone's world is one I do not intend to visit again. Her harried supermom performance, coupled with an inability to say no, makes her such a victim that I end up rooting for the bad guys. Her children are lazy brats who manage to get into all sorts of trouble. Her husband is insecure and selfish. Her friends think nothing of imposing on her. If reading this book is a "break," it's a painful one.
Save your money.
A pleasing Change Of Pace!.......2001-12-30
This was an easy, fun read for me, I tend to read very serious books ( my last was HUBBERT'S PEAK: THE IMPENDING WORLD OIL SHORTAGE) so I found this novel very refreshing. CHRISTMAS COOKIE MURDER is perhaps the second murder mystery I ever recall reading. I thought the story line and characterization were excellent, and I see that Leslie Meier has used the character Lucy Stone five times previously, obviously a well developed character and fine tuned indeed. The writing style used here is homey, very relaxed.
As a man I enjoyed reading of the bickering a group of women are capable of, with their petty squabbles and jealousies, I suspect that Leslie Meier may have a keen insight into women's minds that few men do. Also, much of the book centers around Christmas and families and normal everyday events, and of course a perplexing murder, all told I found this a charming novel, definitely worth reading.
Customer Reviews:
I really disliked this one.......2005-10-26
I am glad I found it in a second hand bookstore for $5. This one is really drek.
First off, character inflation: Yet again WW has to put out a book that causes the characters to get more unbalanced and out of touch with long running campaigns. If you have games that are older than this book, you probably want to avoid including it as it makes problems with PCs established under older rulesets.
Second, breaking theme: My personal least favorite was the fact that an established House, Scathach, was *defined* for how many years as the House that stayed behind. Now suddenly they have to be in Arcadia at the same time some stayed behind. Bleah, makes a mockery of those PCs who stated they are the ones who sought to fight for those left when the Trods Closed.
Third, lack of consistency: Like all the later supplements, it also adds extreme adjectives to the descriptions of the subjects of the books to make them seem 'cooler' than earlier writeups. It just really grates on me to have read this. It doesn't really add to the politics of an established campaign, it muddles it.
My recommendation, skip it. I've had a poor opinion of the books written since Arthaus split for Changeling and the franchise was put in the hands of people who really are writing not for the vision of the game, but to simply create lots of drek with the hope of selling more books.
Winter's Here!!!.......2001-05-04
At last, the juicy tidbits about what happened in Arcadia, the Exile and the very unseelie folks who come back to the Tellurian through in the second Resurgence. Not to be missed by St's wishing to spice things a bit for politically minded Changeling players...great book, and a reminder to WW... keep this level up and you'll keep us as loyal customers...
A Great Changeling Supplement.......2001-05-03
The Book of Lost Houses is a supplement for Changeling the Dreaming, one of White Wolfs roleplaying games.
Overall I found Book of Lost Houses an excellent read, it more than made up for the disappointment of War In Concordia (a book that I personally loathed). It is to the same high standards of the other Houses books, in fact more so since there wasn't any single house that I would not wish to play.
The gist of the book is the remaining Arcadian Sidhe Houses have returned to the Autumn realm, their motives for doing so and details on each house is included within the pages. Five houses in total, Beaumayn, (French) Aesin, (Scandanavian) Daireann, (Celtic) Varich (Russian) and Scathach (Celtic). There's new merits and flaws, details on the house birthrights and various oaths among the pages as well as a complete new fighting ability for the Scathach.
House Beaumayn are French in origin, and the one remaining seelie house (the other houses listed here save for the Scathach are unseelie) all members have gifts of prophecy, imprisoned in Arcadia for crimes by some of their house, finally they have been released. Dreadfully seelie at times (by no means assume seelie means 'good') some of the members have very interesting views on the use of cold iron. They were in the words of another changeling player, written the way House Liam should have been. They're undoubtedly the best house in the book.
Aesin are Scandinavian and being written by someone from that area of the world we can hope that the information has a few grains of truth to it. They're certainly not the looting Vikings I imagined we'd be getting (thankfully). Descended from the Nordic gods, with strong ties to nature, both genders have their own separate roles to play.
The Daireann are yet another group of celtic warriors (as if we needed anymore), they struck me as the most bland of the houses, save for small section that turn to poisoning instead of blades.
The Varich are Russian, have ties with the inanimae and seem rather upright and proper, with an interest in patterns of one sort or another, given enough time they can use this to their benefit, be it in combat or otherwise.
Scathach (as you might remember from Nobles: The Shining Host) have finally been made playable, further details given into their house flaw and boon, as well as (thankfully) a more detailed description between how the Scathach differ from other sidhe. Now they're the second best house in the book. For those unaware the Scathach are yet more Celtic warriors, the one Sidhe House to have remained behind and undergone the changeling way, no longer truly sidhe they share souls with mortals like the commoners do. Though, as the book reveals, not all of the Scathach remained behind after all. They were powered down a lot from their original incarnation I think and portrayed in such a way that I might actually play one, which is saying a lot because before they were my second least favourite house.
My one main criticism of the book is the art, which I personally did not like and I did not think did the sidhe any justice at all. A lot of it seemed like doodles in the margins and made me long for the days of coloured pages and where the true fantasy feel came through in the pictures. However we buy the book for the content not the pretty pictures I hope.
I also believe that the houses could have been given more space, and some of the text has been truncated from the Scathach section ...
If you've read the other house books and liked them then this one is definitely a must, ditto for if you're keeping up on the metaplot. If you plan to run a chronicle with Sidhe in it, I'd definitely recommend this book too. With houses from diverse cultures it's an enjoyable read and would make a great addition to any Changeling Collection.
Four stars; despite the bad art and the missing content I still feel there's a lot of good information in here. The merits and flaws, oaths, and house boons/frailties and the scathach combat techniques and treasures, are worth it alone and throw in all the background information and you've got a book that's one of the best Changeling releases ever.
The Lighter Side of the World of Darkness.......2001-05-02
The consummate daydreamers... White Wolf's Changelings are complex creatures who exist in a world seemingly designed to destroy them. Their fragility makes them touching while their ferocity makes them intriguing. And The Book of Lost Houses only furthers the mystique of these complex creatures: Beautiful, sad, horrific, lascivious, mirthful, stunning, trapped. If the standard books just aren't enough for you - if questions keep bubbling to the surface the more you read and play these whimsical creatures - then The Book of Lost Houses might just be what you're looking for. Questions you may not even have had are answered herein, and it's all presented in such a way as to make it an enjoyable read. I cannot recommend beginning your Changeling experience with this book (try Changeling: The Dreaming, instead), but this is a must for those who are already familiar with The Dreaming.

Book Description
When the original edition of Prozac and the New Antidepressants was published just three years ago, more than eleven million people were taking Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and the other "new antidepressants"-amid a swirling national debate about their effectiveness, their dangers, and their societal implications. Today the number is estimated to have almost doubled, and the number of new drugs being used to treat depression has also increased significantly. But what do most of these people really know about these so-called miracle drugs? In this practical and user-friendly guide, Harvard Medical School professor William Appleton answers all the important basic questions, including:
How do I know if I need to take an antidepressant?
What are the various side effects?
Which antidepressant is right for me?
How will it affect my personality?
What can I do if none of the drugs can help me?
This completely revised and updated edition examines current trends in the ongoing debate about antidepressants, including a discussion of the herbal remedy St. John's Wort and up-to-the-minute information on all the latest medications being used to treat depression.

Second best.......2007-05-28
This is the second best book of its kind. The first is Dr. Appleton's newer edition (2004) "The New Antidepressants and Atianxieties".
Not very useful.......2005-11-05
One glaring omission is that he fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details.
Up-to-date look at antidepressants.......2003-03-13
Appleton offers a cutting-edge look at the current crop of antidepressants. However, this isn't just a recitation of facts, but also Appleton offering his own views about the state of medication in our society. I only share some of his views. It's worth checking out to see if you agree with him. Also worth checking out if you're considering taking an antidepressant and want to get a feel for what's available. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Thank You.......2002-08-17
Simply, although I was embarrassed to be seen buying this book,
after years (beginning in early childhood) of anxiety and panic attacks that were dramatically affecting my life and my family......it made me finally realize and ADMIT the fact that I had to seek some help. Living in Europe has expecially made this book beneficial to me since all the brand names are changed when they come here or vice versa and who knows what the heck you are taking. There really is help out there and yes, it's true - it is genetic. Very simply written and informative.
Good Introduction to Antidepressants!.......2002-04-19
This is an excellant place to start if you want to know more about antidepressant drugs. It is easy to read and understand but this is not just some guy's opinion. The information contained here is current to the date of publication.
As a bonus the author includes a review of various medications not available in America but commonly used overseas (Europe mostly) and some herbal medicines. This section is also helpful and easy to read and look up specific herbs or medicines.
The section on drugs in the "pipeline" is not of the same quality and interest as the rest of the book. Skim it if you must but don't start with the last chapter and think it is reflect of the rest of the book.
This would be helpful for those with depression or for family members trying to understand depression and options for treatment. It is also a useful tool for non-medical service providers who need an easy reference tool for common antidepressant medications.

Author's "degrees" are from unaccredited schools ..........2007-07-21
In contrast to students who earned degrees at accredited schools, you'll rarely see Ann Tracy mention what school she attended. However, in a court hearing in Arkansas (David Eric WOOD v. STATE of Arkansas, Opinion delivered September 5, 2001), she "testified that she received a bachelor's degree in psychology and biblical studies from Coral Ridge Baptist University in Utah. She also holds a Ph.D. degree in health sciences, with emphasis on psychology, from George Wythe College."
Those are simply two different names for the same unaccredited school at the same campus with the same unqualified teachers. The founder (and, for years, one of the main teachers) of George Wythe College also has unaccredited degrees from Coral Ridge Baptist University--notice, it's the same name as the diploma mill that Tracy "graduated" from. (He does have an accredited BA in International Relations from BYU.) How could he teach her "science" when his areas were Biblical Studies, Christian Political Science, and Religious Education? Furthermore, how can a business with no accreditation, led by someone whose degrees are so shaky then confer a "doctorate" on Ms. Tracy?
Only people that has right to say anything about these drugs are the people that have taken them........2005-12-21
Some people think they are so smart that they know everything about these drugs and chemistry, no matter how smart you are and lets say youre #1 top psychiatrists in the world. If you havent taken the SSRI yourself and experienced the damaging affect of these drugs, you cant say anything PERIOD. Not even if you invented the drug !!!!! Why do we have so many people complaining about these drugs? duh maybe because there is a problem and causing problems!!!, people who havent tried or experience the damaging affects afterwards dont see why people are complaining. We dont see books about warning people not to take for example flu shots do we? No. I used to be one of those people who believed and that popping a pill can solve my life problems but Now because of SSRI my life is ruined and have permanant problems that wont go away. And for people who are currently on SSRI, pills will never ever cure depression unless you stay on them forever,Im sure you are happy with those fake smiles, see what happens when you taper off of them. And people who are FOR these drugs should immediately go to doctors and try them and see how safe they are. I recommend you try prozac first. If that dont work out dont worry there are plenty others that doctors will want you to try. HAHAHA so sad that there are still people out there in this country that really believe these pills can help them.
Dubious quality.......2005-11-05
One glaring omission is that she fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details.
Just plain terrible.......2005-05-06
I have many problems with this book.
1. Good information is difficult to find in here, as you have to sort through Ann Tracy's poorly organized, prolix indigant outcries, of which there are many.
2. Most of the information is anecdotal and poorly referenced. We are supposed to take the word of someone who is vehemently against the use of anti-depressants on anecdotal stories which paint SSRIs in an extremely negative light? Give me a break.
3. While Ann Tracy repeatedly accuses the pharmaceutical companies of being dishonest in not acknowledging the risks of using their drugs, she is often guilty of the fear-mongering in the same breath.
While I actually agree with Ann Tracy that SSRIs are more likely to do harm than good, I cannot reccomend this book. It suffers from a dearth of factual information as well as the vacuous, tiresome rantings of the author. A much better book on the subject would be Let Them Eat Prozac by Dr. David Healy, who assumes roughly the same position but in a much more objective manner.
PS If you still want to waste your time with this, e-mail me and I'll sell it to you for about $0.01, as long as you pay for postage.
The Absolute Best Reference for Antidepressant Drugs.......2004-02-01
We were looking for a book we could recommend to people [and patients] that had questions about what they were encountering with antidepressants. Ann Blake Tracy has compiled the research and named the dangers in such a way that anyone with questions about anti-depressant drugs could find the answers -- without taking weeks in the process.
With the FDA reviewing the information that's been WITHHELD by the pharmaceutical companies over the safety of these drugs, Tracy's research is INVALUABLE in determining what happened -- when -- and why. This book is a must have for any one researching this issue whether for the purpose of writing about it or helping others -- whether a patient or someone who has to deal with the patient. Finally the truth is out there. Finally the subject is getting the attention it deserves. Finally, the author of the book is testifying before the FDA on what 'they' knew and when 'they' knew it.
Wonderful book -- Fantastic information.

Customer Reviews:
Help WHO choose?.......2005-10-06
These medications should not be "chosen" by the patient. Considering the side effects and withdrawal symptoms associated with all of these medications, they should not be "chosen" at all. This book is very misleading and could be very dangerous to the general public. These medications do have their place in society, but only at the discretion of a fully-informed psychiatrist along with his full testing and evaluation of the patient.
Alarmingly deficient.......2001-03-01
This book is deficient in providing information regarding the well documented and real risks in SSRI antidepressants. It seems little more than a restating of drug company propaganda. It does not adequately discusss the risks of akasthesia, tardive dyskinesia, risk of suicidality, sexual dysfunction, neurotoxicity, and other numerous side effects. The public is ill served by further reassurance that these toxic agents are safe and effective. The book is also deficient in discussing safe, effective alternatives to SSRIS such as St John's Wort, SAM-e, Omega 3 oils, dietary and lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and spiritual work.
Ronald Feintech, Ph.D.
There is little new information in this book........1999-04-19
Despite its claim to offer the latest news regarding antidepressants, this book basically is compilation of already published information. It barely mentions the newer classes of drugs (post SSRIs: Remeron, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Serzone) and doesn't even mention the most popular SSRI in the world, Celexa. As far as I could tell, the author, a pharmacist and not a doctor, got all of his anecdotal evidence from one actual physician--the one who wrote the brief introduction. There is nothing in this book that one couldn't easily find surfing the Internet (particularly at these drugs' own Web sites) in about half an hour.
There's not much NEW INFORMATION here........1999-04-13
This book, published in April 1999, claims to offer "new information" on the new antidepressants. If you have not done any research whatsoever on these drugs you may find this to be true. However over 1/2 of this book is dedicated to a review of each of the 4 antidepresants in the title. The information is almost straight out of the technical documents already published by the manufactures of the drugs. Additionally the author is a pharmicist and NOT an M.D. I do not mean to knock the pharmacy profession but I would feel more comfortable getting this kind of information from a qualified M.D. I must admit that I had done research on these drugs on my own prior to reading this text.
