Book Description
The Rumpole renaissance continues to build, and now the beloved barrister's many followers have a special reason to rejoice: a sensational full-length Rumpole novel that at last relates the oft-mentioned but never revealed story of Rumpole's first case, the Penge Bungalow affair. Looking back half a century into a very different world, Rumpole recalls a man accused of murdering his father and his father's friend with a pistol taken from a dead German pilot. It was this trial and its outcome that put Rumpole on the map and shaped him into the cantankerous defender of justice that readers know and love. This is a must-read for every Rumpole fan and a compelling invitation to new readers.

Finally we get the whole story!.......2007-09-06
The faithful readers of beloved Horace Rumpole finally get the whole story about the Penge Bungalow Murders which was Rumpole's first criminal case "alone and without a leader". He mentions this case often in his stories. We also get to see how Rumpole and She Who Must Be Obeyed meet and marry. These are both good things! This book is a novel and not a short story, and it's extremely well-done. There are lots of puzzles and mysteries, but Rumpole sees his way through all of it and is able to get his young defendent acquitted. The setting is early 50's, but we slip back and forth to the present day as Rumpole is trying to remember this time and write his memoirs, so we get glimpses of his wife as she is now, as well as Soapy Sam and Claude Erskine-Brown. Present day characters though take a back seat to the characters that were in Rumpole's life when he was a brand-new member of the bar. We also see evidence of the man that Rumpole becomes even when he was young and eager. Mortimer does a great job in this book.
Without A Leader Rumpole Cheats The Gallows Of A Victim, Befriends the Timsons, And Wins The Heart Of She Who Must Be Obeyed..........2007-07-01
Through the years Rumpole has so frequently made reference to his first great courtroom triumph in the matter of the Penge Bungalow Murders that it was good to finally read about that long-ago case. The problem is that so often has Rumpole referred to this first occasion when "alone and without a leader" he carried the day and set an innocent man free of the shadow of the gallows, that perhaps a reader expected more than John Mortimer (could possibly have ever) delivered in this slim novella. It was a lot of fun to read Rumpole as he gazed back half a century into his early days in the Old Bailey, and it was delightful to have this beloved old legal fart honestly portray himself as an ambitious novice elbowing his way into renown, but it was also a bit tiresome to excuse contradictions, anachronisms, and historical discontinuities that plagued Mortimer's sometimes lovingly delivered story of blood stains and stealthy cross examination. Fans of this thirty-year-old series will probably be happy to look past the frustrations that arise from this plot, and if those are forgiven Rumpole and the Penge Bungalow Murders is a quaint trip down memory lane that makes one wish for an entire collection of tales set in Horace Rumpole's junior days.
Rumpole.......2007-03-20
Poor old Rumpole. It is madness as usual (imagine a lawyer not out to empty your pockets like a "cut purse!). A fun read as usual even if "She Who Must Be Obeyed" doesn't get it. You may not agree with some of the liberality, but it is still fun.
Rumpole and the Penge Bungalo Murders.......2007-01-04
This audio book is vintage Rumpole, full of the usual Mortimer humour and wit. I thought that the reader's voice was a bit younger and less gravelly than I expected at first, judging from my experience with several other Rumpole audio books. However, I soon became accustomed to this very minor flaw and thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I'm new to Rumpole: very very British.......2007-01-02
I've never read any of the Rumpole stuff before, though I think I've seen one or two of the shows on PBS. John Mortimer has done a number of these: they've essentially made his reputation in mystery circles. There is one thing that makes Mortimer stand out from other mystery writers: as far as I know, up till this book, as far as I know everything's been short stories. My criticism of this book essentially boiled down to it being the embodiment of Ambrose Bierce's sardonic definition of a novel his book "The Devil's Dictionary": a short story padded. If ever anyone wrote a short story, and then padded it until it could stand alone as a novel, this would be it.
Apparently the Penge Bungalow murders are something that Rumpole, in his other books, speaks of as if he were the best defense lawyer ever, citing this case as proof. In reality, the case is rather mundane, the plot pretty simple, and the characters pretty much what attracts you to the story. The young Rumpole is fun, whether he's trying to make time with a young lady friend (and failing) or clumsily talking to the boss's daughter (and inadvertently proposing to her, successfully), whether he's sparring with the prosecutor's junior assistant, or arguing with the judge. The whole thing is very British, and very very fun. I enjoyed it a great deal, and other than the plot being rather thin, think it a great book.

Book Description
The new novel by the celebrated author of The Sunday Wife chronicles the lives of a tight-knit group of lifelong friends.None of the Same Sweet Girls are really girls anymore and none of them have actually ever been that sweet. But this spirited group of Southern women, who have been holding biannual reunions ever since they were together in college, are nothing short of compelling. There's Julia Stovall, the First Lady of Alabama, who, despite her public veneer, is a down-to-earth gal who only wants to know who her husband is sneaking out with late at night. There's Lanier Sanders, whose husband won custody of their children after he found out about her fling with a colleague. Then there's Astor Deveaux, a former Broadway showgirl who simply can't keep her flirtations in check. And Corinne Cooper, whose incredible story comes to light as the novel unfolds.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Southern Fiction.......2007-09-21
This was about 6 girls who became friends in college and have continued to meet twice a year since graduation. The setting of the book begins when they are in their late 40's and describes the lives of these women together and apart, dealing with their own personal experiences. I thought King did an excellent job writing about southern women, with their humor, their strength and their spunk. Her writing is full of emotion and I found myself on the quintessential roller coaster ride, laughing out loud and then later, with a lump in my throat. I thought this book shows immense talent in expressing deep emotion, humor and is an excellent depiction of southern fiction. I was surprised to learn she is Pat Conroy's wife. I would definitely be interested in reading another one of her novels.
Very Sweet & Sentimental.......2007-07-05
I found this book at a rummage sale of all places ~~ and since I was battling insomnia, I stayed up most of the night to read it ~~ and finished it this morning after two preschoolers woke me up to tell me they were hungry for breakfast. If you have to have insomnia ~~ this book is great for it! It will entertain you all the way through and you won't be able to put the book down. I didn't laugh out loud but it is funny and a little bit sarcastic ~~ which I love.
This book is about friendship and love. I am wondering though if this book is a sequel because it feels so unfinished ~~ yes, they've been friends for thirty years, but I was hoping to get more of a feel of what they were like when they were in college and just out of college. This novel focuses more on three characters than the six of them together. The other three characters seem to be there as fillers ~~ which is sad because I'd love to hear their stories too. Anyhow, there's Julia, the governor's wife, who feels no passion for her husband and is tired of the glittery life she has been living for years. She has a great secret from her past that haunts her to this day. Then there's Lanier, who allowed an affair to destroy her marriage and she retreats to Dauphin Island, her childhood summer home, to recover and "lick her wounds." There's Corrine, an artist who lives in the Blue Mountains, struggling to recover the peace she has been seeking for years. Together, the three come together in one of the worst and best times of their lives and forged a new chapter in their middle age. Lanier and Corrine were roommates in college and Julia was roommates with Astor, a character that is very unlikable ~~ at least, I didn't like her. She seems to bring trouble with her wherever she goes ...
This novel covers a year of their friendship and leaves much to be desired, especially at the end where the novel seems to be abruptly ended. It went from laughter, wine and being good friends to a sad but happy scene ... there's so much missing that this novel feels like an unfinished work. That's so disappointing to me since I did enjoy her first novel, "The Sunday Wife."
But if you're not nitpicky like me ~~ you will love this novel! How can you not? It's about friendship, regrets, loves, dreams and finding your own way again. It will make you cry (I did) and it will make you long for your friends again ... it is a wonderfully written book ~~ perfect for summer at the lake.

Entertaining and enjoyable audiobook.......2007-04-20
This was a wonderful sotry of sisterhood that made me wish I belonged to such a fun and supportive circle of friends, especially in the face of tragedy. Controlling men who treat their women badly raise my ire. Patricia Kalember's voice gave realistic life to this beautiful story, which did not disappoint.
You gotta be a Dixie Darling.......2007-02-01
Cassandra King can capture a Southern Belle and she does in The Same Sweet Girls story. You almost have to be a Dixie Darling yourself to fully appreciate each of these women, however, and from the reviews not every reader does. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book almost as much as The Sunday Wife. I like King's style of writing, and I know these people she's talking about even though they drive you crazy at times.
I do wonder, however, how many loyal daughters of the W, the REAL W, Mississippi University for Women in Mississippi, the oldest state supported college for women in the country, will rise up in arms because King has moved their beloved alma mater over into Alabama and even brought along its spiral fire escapes. Poetic license no doubt, but as I read, I put it back where it belonged as there are many such friends there who would fit the cast as well. If you belong to one of these groups, you'll like King's story even better.
The Same Sweet Girls.......2007-01-12
I especially enjoyed this book. I have been with a close knit group of women for 20 years now and this book brought all that home to me and the fact that we are getting older and someday we will be losing some of our dear friends. Enjoyed the personalities in the book and the message: Live life to the fullest, be accepting of others, and don't ever be afraid to say what you feel.

Book Description
They've Got Nothing In Common.... For animal behaviorist Emma Jenkins, romance has been at the bottom of her daily "to do" list since making it through a messy divorce. But everything changes the day six-feet-of-gorgeous Thomas Tobin walks into her office with a quivering Chinese Crested named Hairy, a canine that looks more like an underfed rodent than a dog. Sure Thomas is sending her mixed signals-but that charming smile just sent Emma's dormant sex drive through the roof.... But Animal AttractionThomas isn't looking for a fling. In fact, he wants nothing to do with women. He just wants to know if Hairy witnessed his owner's murder. But something tells him that asking Emma to help him with the case will spell nothing but trouble-trouble in the form of serious temptation. And the Willingness To Take A Chance On LoveThomas knows that relying on Emma's expertise-and her soft touch with a weird dog that has somehow become his-may be a crazy way to track a killer. Especially when Emma's down-home warmth makes him want to believe that anything is possible-even true love.

Loved it..........2007-06-24
This is my favorite Susan Donovan. Emma and Thomas are well written and endearing characters. Parts of the story are told through the eyes of a hairless toy chinese crested, so funny. There is just enough action to up your heart rate.
creative.......2007-03-07
i really liked this one. the romance has some creative, different scenes. i liked the lead characters a lot. the dog is funny, but too much of a character for me.
Not for the faint of heart -.......2007-01-28
It certainly took Thomas and Emma an awful long time to get to the first sex scene in this book - Chapter 15 out of 20. The problem is they had to find flame-retardant paper on which their romp could be printed without invoking spontaneous combustion! Mercy!
It was absolutely worth the wait.
Who knew there was a costumed disco-dance competition for little dogs? (If there isn't, please don't tell me, I don't want to know.) I did know there were pet behavior therapists, however, so I'm not too far behind the rest of the world.
This is a wonderfully bawdy, funny, touching story with plenty of sizzle and spice, about people who could very easily be real, thanks to the author's wonderful perceptiveness and sense of humor. I loved it, and am delighted to have discovered this author's very first book, even if that only happened a couple of weeks ago. I'll have such fun catching up. So will you.
If you NEEd to laugh, read this book!.......2006-06-11
This book has everything a great contemporary romance should have: drama, suspense, intense emotions, well-written love scenes, complicated family dynamics, a great dog and roll on the floor laughing humor. I can't believe anyone could get through the first chapter without laughing out loud many, many times.
cute, funny and worth reading.......2006-05-07
No unexpected plot twists here. This is just a cute and funny story with well developed, very likeable characters. The sex scenes were hot and well written. This is my first Susan Donovan book and I plan to read the otheres right away. Definitely worth reading!

A fine contemporary romance.......2004-03-03
In Portland, attorney Jared Camby visits Adam Bartlett, the CEO of successful software maker Novel Programs, Unlimited to ask a favor. Jared informs the twenty-seven year old that he is his biological father having impregnated a girl in high school. He offered money to abort the child, but Olivia Maddison refused the cash or anything else to do with him. She died in an accident, but not before she gave birth to twins. Adam learns he has a sister and three half-siblings with the youngest seven years old Mark desperately needing a bone marrow transplant or he dies. Adam is the last hope.
Though he hates hospitals since his adopted sister died years ago, Adam agrees. He goes to Portland General Hospital to take the test. Pediatric Oncology Nurse Leigh Peters is assigned as liaison between Adam and the Cambys. A decade ago when they were teens they fell in love; under pressure from her mother, concerned for the future of both teens, Leigh left him a note ending their relationship. As they fall in love again, Adam wonders if she will leave him to follow her mother's dream.
Though the angst level would fuel a trip to Mars, fans of contemporary dramas will appreciate this powerful family tale. The adult love story is engaging, but what makes the tale is the secondary cast relationships. For instance Jared wants a relationship with his oldest, but has no idea how to go about it as Adam unlike his twin trusts no one so cannot reach out to him. Readers will appreciate this warm relationship drama with several personal issues superseded by Mark's health problems.

Fans of Mary Kay Andrews, Fannie Flagg, and the Sweet Potato Queens won't miss this sensational novel from the author of Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash. Picking up where they left off, Debbie Sue Overstreet and her pal, Edwina, are running the Styling Station and their detective agency the Domestic Equalizers. For them, there's no crime or heartbreak that a little hairspray and a little poking around can't solve! But when Paige McBride comes to town-a little bit spoiled and a whole lot rich the three soon find themselves knee deep in the muck of a horse-thievin' and husband-cheatin' escapade that sets the town of Saltlick, TX, on its ear. By the end, hair will be styled, casseroles will burn, and creeps will be brought to justice if Equalizers have their way. And love will, of course, conquer all.

Much Fun!!!.......2006-06-03
Paige McBride has always been a pampered child. Daddy McBride has raised Paige in a lifestyle she has found success in, until one day Daddy tells her she is on her own. Needless to say, Paige has no idea what to do or how to get a job. Paige spent six years stumbling from colege to college but never came away with a college degree. Daddy steps in for one of the final times and helps Paige find a job she could only dream of having. She is offered a job as an assistant to a horse cutter. The catch is she has to move to a town, Salt Lick, Texas, in the middle of nowhere.
Spur Atwater finds himself nearly penniless and crossing his fingers and hoping his loan comes through so he can fulfill his dream of being a vet. New to Salt Lick, Texas as well, being single and sexy poses for an interesting welcome.
Paige meets 2 interesting ladies, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwinda Perkins-Martin, near her first day in town and they become fast friends. Debbie Sue and Edwina, hair dressers by day, private investigators by night, find themselves embroiled in a plan to thrwart a horse stealing ring. Paige is enlisted in the plan, but her relationship with Spur hangs in the balance. Can their love survive her attempts to help her friends and save the horses which are so dear to her?
Paige and Spur get themselves entangled with each other in more ways than one throughout this fun read.
Add in some interesting Texas characters, misunderstandings, good food, and a lock in in a convenience store cooler and you have a hillarious story which reads quickly and leaves you wanting more when the story ends.
I initially got this book because the title intrigued me but I found this book to be an great read. I read through it so fast I was surprised when it was over. I will look for her first book.

Ugh.......2003-01-17
If this is typical of the average author that White Wolf lets portray their Werewolf: the Apocalypse setting, they're in big trouble. I was completely revolted at his utter lack of basic biological knowledge (and his assumption that his readers are just as ignorant), and his narration of the football game scene left me completely lost, since the narrator assumes you're an avid football afficianado and don't need anything explained. There was a certain lack of suspense, the plot moved like a two-toed sloth, and I had no particular emotions for any of the characters. Don't waste your money on this drivel. If I could rate it with zero stars, that's what it would have gotten from me.
Hmm..........2000-06-13
I'm not sure what to make of this book. It's so cliche-riddled; I often felt like I'd seen or read certain things before. On one hand, the way the author portrays the characters is amusing, but on the other hand, it tends to get slightly irritating as well. One minute, they're these cute little kids, then later on they're supposed to be all heroic and everything. Ultimately, I can only recommend this book to hardcore White Wolf or Werewolf: the Apocalypse fans, or to people who think they have to read every fantasy / horror / sci-fi book they can...if you can find it. Otherwise, you're not missing a whole lot.

Book Description
A feature of the new consumer societies which has emerged in more recent years has been the growing economic and social importance of conspicuous consumption. Status-directed consumer demand, stimulated and promoted by the supply of products and services marketed as symbols of social identity and style, now represents a significant part of overall economic and commercial activity. Once regarded as a form of consumer behavior associated only with the rich and privileged, conspicuous consumption is today a worldwide phenomenon, easily observed at all social and economic levels and a major determinant of the nature and direction of consumer demand.
The origins of modern-day conspicuous consumption can be traced to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to a time when the first consumer societies were being established. And as these new markets emerged, so economics struggled to come to terms with a form of socially-inspired consumer behavior with which it felt instinctively uneasy. Roger Mason traces the development of economic theory and thought since 1700 in its attempts to accommodate a new economics of conspicuous consumption This enlightening book will be of much interest to scholars, researchers and students of consumer behavior in economic theory, and will also be welcomed by those in the disciplines of sociology, psychology and business studies.

Description:
This paper considers the problem of a fashion trend-setter confronting an imitator who can produce the same product at lower cost. A one-dimensional product space is considered, which is an abstraction of the key attribute of some consumer good. Three broad strategies can be optimal for the fashion-leader: (1) never innovate, which milk profits from the initially advantageous position but ultimately concede the market without a fight. (2) Innovate once but only once, which just temporarily defers conceding the market. (3) Cycle infinitely around product space, never letting the imitator catch up and capture the market. Sometimes the cycles start immediately; sometimes the innovator should wait for a time before beginning the cycles. The optimal solution exhibits strong state-dependency, with so-called Skiba curves separating regions in state space where various of these strategies are optimal. There are even instances of intersecting Skiba curves. In most cases, analytical expressions can be stated that characterize these Skiba curves.

Book Description
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by severe developmental impairments, including lowered social function and communication skills. Having a child with an ASD greatly stresses the emotional, financial, and social resources of the family. With this workbook, parents learn the latest and most effective ASD management techniques for their children, including the use of the family enhancement treatment model designed by the authors-a program that provides step-by-step guidelines for fostering children's abilities and enhancing the health of the whole family.
The book encourages parents to seek a balance between child-centered and family-centered goals. Parents learn how to assess their children's needs and create a personalized intervention plan compatible with the family's resources, goals, and priorities. Worksheets guide parents through the assessment and decision making process.
The family enhancement plan shows how specific family needs can suggest specific child-centered target behaviors. When accomplished, these behavior goals-like the accomplishment of certain chores or the ability to go with the family on an outing or errands-will benefit both child and family.

Wonderful Handbook!.......2006-05-25
This book is easy to comprehend. It is broken down into stages. You are set up to analyze your child, your family, your life. The purpose of the book is to help you bring you family dynamics back where they should be. The first thing you're told to do is identify stressors. Then you examine yourself to see how you react to stress. Then you find ways to reduce your stress. It even gives warnings about depression and anxiety and advice for seeing a doctor for yourself. As a parent we all know that if we cannot function, the family cannot function. And when dealing with special needs, we need to be calm and in control or our child will not be calm and in control. The book is also full of helpful advice. For example, there are helper phrases that you can use to explain to your non-ASD children about why the rules and consequences are different for your ASD child. And as you walk through the book step by step, you are building a personalized plan for your very own family. A plan to get your family working together as a team. And your ASD child is PART OF THE TEAM. As you move along, your children will feel more equal. I LOVE that this book focuses on family. All too often I have had therapists and specialists telling me what I need to do for him. Finally there is a book that stresses the importance of everyone in the family being healthy. For too long our family has revolved around our child with ASD and everyone notices. I am excited to work through the entire book and see the results. So far it's been terrific.
