Book Description
Marshall is learning to love the land. He’s in the process of transforming his father’s ranch into prime spring creek fishing, literally molding the land as he attempts to fashion himself.
He’s a guide, along with his two closest friends, Molly and Alton. All three are trying to step out of a youthful fascination with the freewheeling, fish-guiding life, and into a sustainable life on the land and water of Montana. Pale Morning Done is a coming-of place novel, in which Marshall must decide between the woman who wants him and the woman who loves him; between the future desired by his father and the future created by himself; between the truth that will bind and the omission that will free. It is about the tides that toss friends, sometimes against each other, and ultimately unites them against enemies. It is about the delicate balance of our lives that violence can abruptly topple.
Beautifully written, this first novel scours the landscape of emotion as it revels in the physical landscape of Montana. Pale Morning Done is sure to place Jeff Hull in the company of other great chroniclers of the new West, including Norman McLean, William Kittredge, and Tom McGuane.
Customer Reviews:
Come inside Jeff Hull's Montana.......2007-05-01
In Pale Morning Done Jeff Hull skillfully fashions a world of believable people, beautiful places, noble causes and roiling relationships. Pale Morning Done made me feel as though I was living in present day Montana, restoring a spring creek, fishing and having a drink or two with friends at the end of the day.

Nothing Pale About this Story.......2006-09-27
Being a regional novelist (Suomalaiset: People of the Marsh, ISBN 0972005064), whenever I am out and about, I like to pick up regional fiction and read about the places I visit. While visiting Glacier National Park in Montana this summer, I happened to buy "Pale Morning Done" by Jeff Hull, a Montana author. Being a trout fisherman (a poor one), and a lover of the out of doors, the book piqued my interest. Little did I know how wonderful a read it would turn out to be! Hull uses the landscape of Big Sky Country as a separate and distinct character in this story of thirty somethings coming of age far later in life than one might expect. The protagonist, his love interests, his neighbors, his friends, are all crafted and portrayed with the hand of a deft and adept writer. The dialogue is pitch perfect and the narrative sections, especially those connected to the landscape, sing like fine poetry. If you're looking for a good literary novel with contemporary themes but timeless conflicts, read this book.
Great picture of a vibrant Montana sub-culture.......2006-06-01
Hull does a great job of bringing the fly-fishing guide sub-culture to life in this entertaining and sometimes poignant modern novel. I live in Montana and am on the fringes of this particular group and laughed out loud and in fondness during several passages. The tragedy near the end of the book keeps it from becoming too sweetness-and-light and kinda shook me up a bit. The only thing that annoyed me was the main character's chronic indecision--figure it out already! But then, I guess that's pretty true-to-life too.
Loved it........2006-02-15
Jeff Hull paints a vivid, wonderful story. This book takes you to Montana, and keeps you there well after the last chapter is read.
Great book - great new book writer.......2005-12-26
Early Xmas gift that I couldn't put down.
I have fished many places, including Montana. This book brought me back. Rich storyline, interesting characters and an honest portrayal of the complexities facing many of the storied fishing spots across the country. And, beautiful insights into why those of us who fish for the joy of it all are brought back to the water whenever life allows. Hull paints a picture of fishing a stream that fills all of your senses. I agree with the editorial reviewers who evoke the names of the great fishing authors when describing Hull's writing. He gets it and can put it into words that you can't stop reading. I can't wait for his next book!

Gyles Rawlings, fifth Earl of Chillingworth and an honorary member of the Cynster clan, is determined not to marry for love. To that end, he makes an offer of marriage, sight unseen, to the niece of an old friend. He believes he's chosen a docile, biddable lady who will bear him an heir and leave his emotions uninvolved. He arrives for his own wedding without ever actually meeting his fianc&eaccute; and at the chapel's altar, is astonished to discover that he's offered for the wrong woman--his wife is the cousin of the woman he thought he was marrying. The two ladies share the same name, and the woman he has married is a passionate female who makes his head spin. Francesca isn't docile, certainly not biddable, and she has no intention of settling for anything less than her husband's heart.
The battle lines are drawn in this war of love, with both parties well aware of the stakes. Will Giles continue to barricade his heart, or will Francesca's love and loyalty tear down the walls that keep him from her? And if Giles can't thwart the strange threats to Francesca's life, neither may live to see the end of their contest of the heart.
This installment in author Stephanie Laurens's beloved Cynster series has been eagerly anticipated by fans, and All About Passion doesn't disappoint. Taut with sexual tension between the hero and heroine, rich with details of the world of Regency England, and well-supported with a solid plot, this latest Cynster tale is an excellent read. --Lois Faye Dyer

Gyles Rawlings, a man determined to control his destiny, finds out what it means to become obsessed with the one thing he'd thought he would never want ... his wife's heart. "If one is not marrying for love, one may as well marry for something else. My future countess has to be sufficiently docile and endowed with at least passable grace of form, deportment and address." Fate has made Gyles Rawlings a man determined to control his destiny. He has decided to wed a well-bred lady who will dutifully bear him sons, yet turn a blind eye while he takes his pleasure elsewhere. By all good accounts, Francesca will fit his bill. As for the "elsewhere," he's recently encountered a beautiful, brazen siren who will make a fine mistress, one with a fiery nature to match his own. But at the altar, Gyles discovers his bride is the bold enchantress who has inspired his deepest fantasies. Finding passion and love in the same woman has long been a secret fear. But as his world is rocked on its axis, Gyles becomes obsessed with one thing he'd thought he would never want...his wife's heart
Customer Reviews:
YUK!.......2007-10-05
I don't know how she could marry someone who propositioned her when he thought she was his brides companion. Also I understand intimicy livens up a romance novel but give me a break, I felt the need to wash my hands half way through the book. I doubt I will even read any additional book by Laurens after this.
All About Passion.......2006-11-05
Exactly as the title suggests. All about passion is a story all about passion and intrigue and what a man should be. Very whorthwile reading this book.
started off badly, then ended alright.......2006-10-17
First of all, this book started off horribly in my opinion. The 'hero' sounds like an idiot and a jerk. The 'heroine' makes assumptions all over the place and then winds up in a position she isn't happy with. However, in my opinion, at least her assumptions and actions were mostly justified, while the 'hero' comes off looking like pond scum.
Towards the middle of the book, our 'hero' is looking up. He isn't so alpha and stupid. The 'heroine' decides to make the best of the situations, and I think she does a pretty good job.
There wasn't much of a mystery, and by that I mean it was pretty obviouos who the bad guy was. And the ending was predictable. However, the book definately got better as it went on.
All in all, this isn't my favorite book by any means, but it was a nice distraction once we got past the 'hero' being an idiot. Pick it up if you are a fan of the Cynster books or Stephanie Laurens in general, because while this isn't the best example of her work, it isn't the worst either.
Just About the Best I've Read.......2006-10-09
I loved the characters, excellent plot development, extremely sensual, what more could a reader ask for?
The Honorary Bar Cynster's Book.......2006-04-08
Gyles or Chillingworth was a character in the first six Bar Cynster novels. He is called an honorary Bar Cynster because he was a school friend, similar in personality and is a friendly rival toward some of the Bar Cynster's in their pursuits of their wives.
Chillingworth decides he will marry but will never fall in love with his wife. His will be an arranged marriage. Upon finding out the owner of the land adjacent his is a young woman of marriagable age and the land will pass onto her husband as a dowry, he makes an offer of marriage to her uncle sight unseen. Chillingworth spots a boring young woman sitting in the garden and assumes it is his intended bride. He then runs into a brazen young woman with an Italian accent and is immediately attracted. He thinks she would make an excellent mistress after he marries. Surprise, surprise, he finds out on his wedding day the attractive Italian woman is his fiance. They have no choice but to marry.
When Chillingworth tells his young wife that he only wants a marriage of convenience with a couple of heirs they make an agreement, that after their heirs are born they may have discreet affairs. Of course, she doesn't really want that and sets out to change his mind. Also, an unknown enemy is trying to kill her.
I think I liked this book better than some of the Bar Cynster novels. Francesca is not a boring leading lady content to be an old maid, Chillingworth is stubborn but has that special appeal that keeps him from being unlikable. If you enjoy the Cynster novels, don't miss this one.

Conan is out with Prospero in the Border Kingdoms, along with his son. The latter runs into the Witchmen of Hyperborea, which is not so good. Dad does manage to find both him, and Thoth-Amon after Conn gives him some information.
3 out of 5
King Conan is on the move, looking for the black wizard Thoth-Amon. Chabela also makes a cameo appearance.
Luckily for Conan, when the magic goes down, he has a White Druid who has tapped into the heart of Ahriman by his side. Especially handy when big black monsters appear.
3 out of 5
King Conan, Count Trocero and forces are still pushing on against the Stygians.
A raid by wyverns, though, leads to the capture of Conan and his son by a Zembabweian ally of Thoth-Amon's.
Conan needs help to get out of an enchanted prison cell situation.
2.5 out of 5
The final confrontation between Conan and the sorceror Thoth-Amon.
Some divination in Zembabwei leads Conan and his forces to seek out the Great Stone Skull. He is assisted in this endeavour by Nzinga of the Amazons.
A dragon waylays them, and Prince Conn ends up in the lair of a serpent girl, but realises her seduction in time.
Conan and company, as Kull before him, go down to put an end to the worshippers of the Slithering God.

The worst edition in the original Lancer series.......2003-09-06
This book was probably a harbinger of things to come, given all the lousy Conan pastiches that have found their way into print in the past twenty-some odd years. As I recall, this was actually the last edition of Lancer's Conan saga, even though it is chronologically number eleven in the series, and it was probably published last with good reason: it's just pretty bad.
In fact, it may not have been published in the original line. Its been a number of years since the series came out, but I think Lancer may have ceased publishing the series and this volume did not come out until the series but picked up by subsequent publishers (someone with a fresher memory than mine may be able to clarify that point).
As another reviewer noted, it seems to be a series of loosely strung together episodes as Conan engages in one of the oldest and tiredest type of tale in sword and sorcery: rescuing the damsel in distress. Unlike Conan the Avenger (originally entitled "The Return of Conan"), which carried a similar theme, there is no real energy or originality to any of the story. Carter and de Camp have done far better Conan stories. You almost get the sense that everyone just wanted to make sure there were twelve volumes in the series, so this one was thrown together.
The only real reason to read this is if you are a Conan completist, otherwise, you won't be missing any significant contributions to the Conan saga if you pass on it.
The (second) nadir.......2002-04-30
I'm a fan of Conan, and unlike some others, I don't object fanatically to L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter's efforts to complete Howard's unfinished stories and outlines, and to expand the Conan stories into a twelve volume series...at least in principle. The De Camp and Carter stories written in posthumous collaboration with Howard are fine, in fact, but you must be wary of the full-length novels in the series that are not at least partially credited to Howard. There are three: Volume 6 (Conan the Buccaneer), Volume 11 (this one), and volume 12 (Conan of the Isles). While volume 12 is a passable read, the other two are dreadful pastiches, the worst volumes in the series.
This one, Conan of Aquilonia, is a novel in name only. The overarching story is that Conan, now in his fifties, must travel to the ends of the Earth to free his kidnapped wife, but the book is basically a series of episodes strung together, none of them particularly original, suspenseful, or exciting. Most of the episodes are pallid retreads of similar events that occurred elsewhere in the series. Conan of Aquilonia reads like a Vegas-style medley of Conan's greatest hits. Avoid it and stick to the real thing.

Well-written and very useful.......2005-04-26
I just became involved very recently with the Conan RPG, and I love it! This source book has a huge amount of information crammed inside it, great for players and GMs. Instead of just covering the different cities and provinces of Aquilonia, the author has delivered all kinds of information to really bring the land to life, from religion to customs to laws. Highly recommended for anyone playing the game, or for the Howard fan who wants to know more about the land Conan ruled.

Mindful Recovery: A Spiritual Path to Healing from Addiction
ASIN: 159285348X |
Book Description
A wellspring of inspiration for individuals longing for more in recovery. William Alexander got clean and sober in 1984. On the outside, all was well. He was married, working, and healthy. Yet as the years passed, he became increasingly discontent. Something important, something profound was missing in his long-term sobriety. Here, with marvelous insight and agile humor, Alexander leads readers through the deeply personal twists and turns of his spiritual reckoning and eventual reawakening. His style is direct yet welcoming. His stories are stunning in their simplicity. Readers who long for something more in recovery from addiction will find true bearings in Alexanders spiritual meanderings and take comfort in his musings. As a sequel to Cool Water, Alexanders acclaimed first book about living well in recovery, Still Waters offers readers a thought-provoking and encouraging view from further on down the recovery road. "Still Waters is a rare, realistic and often rollicking account of the ups and downs in life after sobriety. Full of good stories and slant wisdom." Sam Keen, author of Fire in the Belly, Hymns to an Unknown God, and Faces of the Enemy.
