This book is great...whether you're just starting to pitch or have been pitching for years, the information in this book is some of the most useful I've read.
Geared for younger pitchers.......2007-03-01
This book isn't as "bad" as some of the other reviewers have suggested. Leave your expectations at the door: You're not going to be able to pitch like Nolan Ryan after thumbing through this book. It's not meant for upper-level pitchers. It's geared toward younger players - Little Leaguers and high schoolers. It's an easy read and it's very approachable (a good mix of pics and text). These are plusses in my book!
Not much on pitching!!!!!.......2006-10-02
Well this was a severe disappointment. I was expecting some insight on his mechanics, going into grave detail... The information on pitching form was extremely generic and repetitive. There is absolutely no unique insight that you couldn't get from using an internet search engine. It all comes down to this: keep your weight back during the leg kick (don't move forward), and then have a controlled fall towards the plate. Thats about it. Chapter 1 was fluff about his career and Ryan's various coaches, chapter 2 was mostly fluff about mental attitude, and chapter 3 was the only instruction on how to properly throw the baseball.
The rest of the chapters were just an "introduction to weight lifting and stretching". Chapter after chapter of what weights to lift, and how to lift them. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad weight training information... but there are far better weight training books out there and the excercises are not really unique to baseball or pitching. Generic normal excercises, like the ones you'd find in any weight training book (there are only so many ways you can lift a dumbell).
I was looking to the book for some deeper insight into mechanics, and maybe some more illustration of ryans form. I wanted to dissect his delivery, and see how his pitching style differed from my own. The book did not deliver.
To those other reviews that claim conditioning is the reason ryan was so successful... I'd say you are partially right. Conditioning is important. Its also very basic. I don't need a book telling me how to do squats or shoulder presses. The act of throwing the baseball, on the other hand, is extremely complicated. This is where you need the most information...
This is not an "ultimate guide" to anything. I wouldn't even reccomend this book to a novice since its so incredibly vague that the information probably wouldn't be clear to them. There are several superior *free* resources on the internet that can be found using your favorite search engine. Some come equipped with free videos and all.
Bottom line: this book was a waste of time

So far I has seen improvement from 3 of my players.
Book was simple to follow and so far I have been able to use it as a guide with my pitchers.
Next step is to see if the results last all season.

This book was casual to read, flip through, but did nor have any real information that would help a pitcher. It did have a big name in the title.

As a new high school baseball coach, I purchased many books in order to help me gain the knowledge I needed to feel confident about beginning a new program. This book is average compared to the rest.

Brilliant............2006-03-01
Coach Winkin is 86 years young(87 in 2006) and he still is a college baseball coach. His knowledge and passion for the game is evident here. He has put together a great book to expand your over-all wisdom regarding a game so few really understand. Everyone knows about pitchers and hitters, but there are thousands of hidden aspects of the game to learn about.
This book won't help you be a better coach.......2004-06-13
Unless you're next in line for the job at USC or Texas or LSU, then this book doesn't apply to you. And if you are in line for those jobs, you're in a world of hurt if need to read this book to help you coach. This book is totally useless to the masses who are looking to help coach their sons or daughters baseball teams. The advice given doesn't apply to 95% of the people who are looking to improve their knowledge of coaching baseball. Keep looking for a better book.
GREAT BOOK A MUST HAVE.......2000-11-24
This book is serious must have for all baseball coaches in Hß or above. This book is not geared to the little league coach. But as an Assistant coach I found this book as helpful as anything. I was amazed how much this book helps and is so though. Great Book !!!!!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves baseball and wants to learn more. This book gives you a lot of different ways to improve your mental and physical aspects of hitting. It is a great nonfiction book; there is really nothing wrong with this book because everything is pretty important information.

Very thorough and detailed book on the art of hitting. I had never heard of Bernardo Leonard before purchasing this book, but it becomes apparent as you start reading that the guy knows his stuff. By the way, who better to teach hitting than someone who struggled themselves. Enjoy!

Kinley MacGregor's historical fiction is unsophisticated, but this entry borders on simplistic, particularly compared to some of the better authors in the genre. Little care is given to avoiding anachronisms, authentic culture of the time or language. Cliches abound. No matter the age of the characters, they often behave like teenagers. And most dreadful of all, the author now has the characters of the current book thinking or talking about characters who were in the *other* books of this series so frequently that they begin to dominate and overwhelm the events and people of *this* one. You begin to wonder if you shouldn't, perhaps, be reading some of those other books instead of this one, because they sound more interesting than this unsophisticated, repetitive tale. If you like your historical romances rich and a bit more complex, authentic and mature, avoid this one...and I'm guessing, the rest of the series.
On the run - lots of adventure and humor..........2006-08-21
Nora is running away from her powerful father and his idea of the perfect husband. She chooses Ewan to get her safely to her aunt who just happens to be royalty. Ewan and Nora run into gypsies hired to detain them and make a deal to find the man who hired them. On the way, Nora wins Ewan's heart. Many obstacles face the two before they get their happily ever after.
Kinley MacGregor delivers an entertaining novel with lots of humor. A fun read.
Scottish princess tames the tormented bear .......2006-06-10
Nora is desperate to escape her upcoming marriage to a man she cannot stand. Knowing that her only chance is by fleeing to her aunt, who happens to be the powerful Queen Eleanor of England, she flees to the protection of the one man whom both her father and betrothed fears. Seeking his protection, she braves the wild and off to the cave that has been Ewan's home since that tragic episode years ago.
Ewan MacAllister is a man haunted by a past mistake. Years ago, he fell in love with the same woman whom his brother Kieran wanted to marry. When Isobail declared her love for him, they flee together only for Ewan to find out that he was nothing more than a means for her to escape Scotland and meet her English lover. To make matters worse, he returns home only to find out that Kieran killed himself after learning about their elopement. From that day on, Ewan will carry the guilt over his brother's suicide and turn his back from all women and live in solitude.
TAMING THE SCOTSMAN is the third book in Kinley MacGregor's delectable MacAllister series. I enjoyed reading this book and was entertained by Ewan and Nora's antics. I liked how Nora finds herself captivated by Ewan, whom she likens to a rugged bear that wants to be cuddled and cared for. It was good to see someone who dreamt of marrying a man of culture and one who would read her poetry, fall in love with someone completely so different; a man who storms off to attack trees with an ax each time he gets infuriated. As for Ewan, I am so glad that he finally meets the woman who can tame him and bring out the passionate and tender man in him. Someone who finally makes him realize that he isn't to blame for his brother's decision to end his life, when they were both victims of the lies of an evil woman.
This is another fantastic book by Kinley MacGregor. I enjoyed the interaction between the main characters, and the secondary characters are also very entertaining. The ending is guaranteed to whet your appetite for the next books to see if THAT certain mystery can be solved. I cannot wait to learn the truth!
If you are new to Kinley MacGregor and are a stickler for timelines, you should start with MASTER OF DESIRE, followed by CLAIMING THE HIGHLANDER, BORN IN SIN, TAMING THE SCOTSMAN and WHERE'S MY HERO? Although the heroes of the first and fifth titles are not MacAllisters, they have recurring parts in the other books.
Seamless transition, but..............2006-02-27
Another great read about the MacAllister men, however the ending to this story about Ewan MacAllister turns into a "Cloak and Dagger" MacAllister mystery: Kieran--Dead or Alive; The MacKaids vs. The MacAllisters; Will Lochlan MacAllister fall prey to the seductive dance by the Gypsy Catarina; and last but not least, who is Pagan really? I have waited 3 years already since the first printing of Ewans story, it is time to solve the mystery.

What a special person! This is someone who changed peoples lives by what he wrote! He was a brilliant author and person. I believe Og Mandino will live forever in our hearts, minds and spirits! This book as well as anything he wrote would be very much worth your time to own in your library.
Another good one........2007-07-19
If you've never read one of Og Mandino's books, you should. They are inspiring for success minded people. I find that reading these types of books often, keeps my thoughts focussed where they should be. Most of his books reiterate the same principles, with a new idea here or there. You've probably heard these principles before, but they are presented nicely here. Great value for the cost of this book.
Excellent.......2007-01-11
It will take your breath away and bring you back from just going thru the motions to living in happiness. Truly touched by the hand of God, as with all of Mandino's work, a true gem.
Sensing Repetition.......2006-07-30
The original Greatest Salesman in the World follows the great salesman Hafid's life before and after he reads the 10 scrolls of selling success. In this quite similar sequel, the scrolls of success are lost in a shipwreck, and Hafid is divinely called to write 10 new scrolls in order to replace the old ones.
The new scrolls emphasize these main points:
-Never again will I belittle myself
-I won't start the day without a map
-I will be enthusiastic
-I will never be unpleasant to others
-I will look for triumph in adversity
-I will do my best on every task
-I will focus completely on the task at hand
-I will never wait for opportunity, instead I will seek it
-Each night, I will reflect on what I did, and think about how I can improve
-I will pray to the creator in success and failure
Some of these points look VERY similar to the points made in the first book, so much that I was tempted to give this book 3 stars, but the new scroll emphasizing the foolishness of waiting for opportunity was much needed. Also, the last scroll about prayer was needed, even though it is essentially a repeat of the tenth scroll in the first book. I am very glad that this author puts so much emphasis on prayer.
Aside from repetition, the only thing I didn't like about this book is that the scrolls are treated so majestically, being just a hair under Biblical scripture itself - almost as if to suggest that the ingredients necessary for any kind of success are both the Word of God AND ten extra scrolls. I'm not so sure Paul would agree. The scrolls are helpful for success, but not necessary.
But yeah, I have to agree. Sitting around and waiting for opportunity to come to you is really the worst thing you can do.
Must-Read.......2006-07-22
I have read everyone of Og Mandinos Books and all I can say is that he writes with brilliance, clarity, enthusiasm, and spirit. You can never go wrong with any of his books. He points out the path to success and motivates the spirit within to achieve all that we as human beings are capable. He helped me to tap into my innate genuis and create a life of prosperity and creativity. If you havent raed his books, start now and your journey of the spirit will begin. He was a born writer and even after his passing continues to have a great influence on many people old and young. He truly lived a purposeful and divine life. Go buy all his books and enjoy the growth and enlightenment. After that Buy my Book " Your daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and Present". Enjoy and rememeber you are capable of great things in your life.
