1939. The world's most luxurious airliner is heading straight into a storm of international intrigue, violence, war, and betrayal...
Customer Reviews:
Welcome Aboard the Pan Am Clipper.......2007-03-17
I read this 544 page paperback in 3 days. Its "Ship of Fools" meets the Pan Am Clipper in 1939 at the very beginning of WWII. Everybody on the legendary flying boat seems to be running away from something and their stories all intersect during the 40 hour flight from England to the U.S. Its an easy and fun read, and the closest we'll ever get to experiencing the golden age of travel by flying boat.
Pretty good..........2006-11-28
Ok, this was no Pillars of the Earth, but it was a decent read anyhow. Just before the outbreak of World War 2, a Clipper - a large luxury plane akin to the Spruce Goose - is taking off from England for America. Some passengers are ordinary people, some are upper class people, some are movie stars, some are police, some are criminals, and some are Nazis. Moreover, someone has kidnapped the wife of a crewmember, and will kill her unless he brings the plane down in the Atlantic and release one very special passenger.
There are many characters, with many intertwining plots, and Follett does a decent job in managing it, however, there were times when he would quit switching points of view, and continue with the more interesting characters. Also, the ending is a tad forced, in that everything ends a little too prettily, otherwise this book would have gotten 5 stars for being a real page-turner.
Get this one next time you have a long flight.

Childish plot and thin characters - maybe his worst book.......2006-11-14
This is a great setting and a good theme - badly executed. It reminds me of a plot of a Tom Swift boys adventure book from the '20's - but without the excitement and adventure. Maybe Follett hired someone to grind out the hundreds of pages of bad dialog and the all too predictable plotlets and final wimpering big bang climax. In the end, the book lays there dead, motionless and emotionless, like the dead cardboard cutout Scotland Yard Special Branch detective.
Absolute fluff, but enjoyable.......2006-09-27
"The Eye of the Needle" is on of my favorite novels set during World War II. Subsequent works by Ken Follett have always disappointed me, but for the reader who is looking for an escape and is willing to accept implausible plot development, "Night over Water" is an engaging read.
Characters are two-dimensional at best, and the storyline melodramatic. Where Follett succeeds is in his descriptions of the Pan Am Clipper and the almost claustrophobic sense of the many hours (30 total) that it took for the journey across the Atlantic. At one point, a scene described the morning meal served on the trip, and I thought "how many more meals can these passengers eat?" Within a paragraph, there was a reference to how tired one of the characters had become of the endless food and luxury of the trip, instead simply wanting the trip to be finished.
The book is enjoyable in the way a 1940s movie would be - slightly dramatic and almost campy, but engaging as an escape.
I beg to differ with one reviewer who felt the sex scenes "steamy" - if you want steam, don't expect it in "Night over Water."
Fictional tale about the last flight of a Pan Am Clipper as WWII begins.......2006-09-16
If you like airplanes, intrigue, World War II stories, and good writing, you'll enjoy this novel by Ken Follett. Follett always does his homework and I always learn from him. This story takes place at the beginning of England's entry into the war against Nazi Germany in 1939. It is about the last flight of the flying boat, the Pan American clipper (Boeing 314), from England to America. The luxurious, short-lived air ship began life in the summer of 1939 and ended a few weeks later when Hitler invaded Poland.
On board is a troubled aristocratic British family; an American actress; an Englishwoman running off with another man, leaving her husband; a young jewel thief; a criminal being returned to the states by authorities; a grumpy, demanding old princess; a German scientist and his companion; and others. This mix of characters and the situation in which they find themselves, make for an excellent story, especially considering the terrifying news flight engineer, Eddie Deakin, receives shortly before takeoff.
The writing is tight, the suspense builds with every page (as events in a well-crafted story should), and the wartime events are accurate within the scope of a tale of fiction. I found it enticing, riveting, and plausible. I cared so much about some of the characters that at the end of the book I wanted there to be a sequel. I wanted to know what happened to Margaret and Harry, Diana and Mark, Nancy and Mervyn, young Percy, and even Margaret's sister, Elizabeth, who left the story fairly early on. The only problem with this book was that the copy I received from Amazon had 32 missing pages! I had to borrow a copy to read the missing text!!
Another good Follett book with airplanes and a World War II setting is Hornet Flight (November 2003).

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A448073. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study examines the role that theater-level commanders in the UN and NATO played in influencing the use of airpower over Bosnia between the spring of 1993 and the end of 1995. It also uncovers factors explaining why the top UN and NATO commanders in the region acted as they did. The central thesis of this study is that the commanders' needs to balance the various responsibilities inherent in command powerfully affected their actions when they tried to influence the use of airpower. Stress on these commanders was greatest when they felt forced to make tradeoffs that put their forces at risk without a corresponding payoff in terms of mission accomplishment. In attempting to strike the proper balance between force protection, mission accomplishment, and obedience to civilian political control, commanders drew on their own expertise and that of their staffs. Not surprisingly then, the traditional division between soldiers and airmen over the utility of airpower manifest itself in a split dividing UN army generals from senior NATO airmen, and also helps to explain each groups actions. Because this case is presented in a chronological fashion, it offers the first coherent account of operation Deny Flight the NATO air operations over Bosnia from April of 1993 until December of 1995. From start to finish, the theater-level commanders acted as more than mere executors of policy.

Customer Reviews:
A Fun Holiday Treat!.......2007-08-19
This trim and fun entry in the crossword-mystery series written by husband and wife Cordelia Frances Biddle and Steve Zettler under the pseudonym Nero Blanc is a delight, not only for crossword lovers but fans of light mysteries set during the holidays as well. Opening the day after Thanksgiving, as the annual contest of decorating the Paul Revere Inn for Christmas in 18th century fashion begins, the authors give their story the welcoming warmth of a fireplace when it's snowing outside.
Belle is the crossword puzzle editor for The Newcastle Evening Crier and is joining her friends Sara and Martha from the church sewing group to try winning a contest they've lost 4 years in a row. Morgan and Mitchell, twins and owners of the Inn, are constantly at odds over the expensive trappings Mitchell believes lends authenticity to the Inn's name. The original Longfellow poem hangs as a reminder of Newcastle's past.
When that framed historic poem is stolen, Belle's husband Rosco, an ex-cop turned P.I., looks into the matter. More intrigue surfaces when Belle discovers a book of puzzles written by an unknown woman to her daughter. The book is filled with delicious recipes, but the ingredients are contained within the puzzles, so that the crosswords must be completed in order to enjoy them. As added nostalgia, the clues involves the 1940's!
A young teenager named E.T. Whitman has a sorry home-life but a love of words and helps Belle and Rosco do some sleuthing on both mysteries, which may be connected. When the historic document is suddenly returned, it is E.T. who notices something different about it which leads to new discoveries about old crimes long hidden and forgotten. The solving of the mystery has an added bonus for E.T. I can't reveal.
There is a light touch and atmosphere which makes this a perfect read for Christmas. Rosco and Belle are a warm and fun couple, and their love for their dogs Kit and Gabby is endearing. Anyone who enjoys a light mystery with tons of seasonal ambience and warm likable characters will love this book. The recipes and crosswords are included, but Belle and Rosco, a.k.a.Cordelia and Steve, have included the answers at the back if you get stuck. A fun series and a great read!
clever and witty mystery.......2005-10-04
It is the day after Thanksgiving and most everyone in New Castle, Massachusetts is at the Paul Revere Inn decorating the various rooms and completing for prizes. Belle Graham, the crossword puzzle editor for The Evening Crier, is looking at books in the inn's library when she finds a handmade book of crossword puzzles that a mother made for her daughter. Belle decides to see if she can find out who the mother and daughter were.
Belle's husband, private investigator Roscoe Polycrates is involved in locating a stolen copy of Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride that was attached to the wall of the inn. Twelve year old E.T. Whitman, who was hired to clear the snow from the inn, watches the guests to make sure nobody sneaks out with the poem. One morning the poem is back on the wall but, E.T. believes it is a forgery and when they take the poem off the wall, they find a hidden compartment in the frame. While Roscoe tracks down the thieves, E.T. helps Belle with the puzzles and gives her the clue she needs to figure out who the mother was who made the book and its puzzles.
Readers who like to do crossword puzzles will find this book A CROSSWORD DELIGHT. The puzzles are hard to solve because the clues center around the 1940's when the puzzle maker constructed them. It is fun to read a regional cozy that has no violence, gore or murders in the storyline yet still grips the reader. Although E.T. is a secondary character he plays a major role in helping Roscoe and Belle. Once again Nero Blanc constructs a clever and witty mystery.

From Skeptical To Supporter.......2007-08-02
I have to admit that I was skeptical of Rick Joyner. I have visited Morningstar in Charlotte, NC several times and at times felt it was shallow and not biblically balanced. However, my views have changed. This is not to say that I don't disagree with Joyner or Morningstar International because I do but that seems to be part of being human. None of us have perfect knowledge (1 Corinthians 13:8-13).
Therefore, when I was given this book I at first read it with a skeptical eye. I was looking for error. The irony is that this is a good book. Joyner, contrary to some of the other views given, does not promote mystical Christianity at all in this book. In fact, I found that Joyner does a good job of wrestling with the Scriptures. The book's focus is on Jesus and Joyner wants the reader not to simply have a head knowledge of Jesus but a living, vital relationship with Jesus. If that is mysticism then count me in. Joyner attacks denominations and doctrines that divide but he balances this with an emphasis on loving Jesus and sharing unity in Him. He is not pushing for blind obedience without sound doctrine but he does desire for the Church to love each other more and that is a lesson we all need to hear and obey (John 13:34-35).
Overall this is a solid book. For those skeptical of Rick Joyner and his ministry I believe you will realise that Joyner is not as far out there as you might think. In fact, you might just become a supporter as I am.
Real Insight.......2007-05-14
Joyner has received revelation not common to the "big names". He is not afraid to relate the uncomfortable reality that the way up is down
Revelations.......2007-01-19
Occasionally you read a book that opens the door to your heart for an amazing revelation from God. This is one of those. The author begins by showing that there is just as much death in the knowledge of good as there is in the knowledge of evil. It sounds simplistic, but this book helped me shift my focus from trying harder to growing more in love with Jesus getting to know more of him. The change is amazing. I highly recommend the book.
Enlightening .......2006-07-17
The author opened my eyes to a truth that I had never realized. Glory to God.
Foundational insight.......2006-07-07
This book presents a foundational insight based on the Garden of Eden experience of Adam and Eve: Are we interested in knowledge, or life? This principle applies to so many of the moral choices that we face.
Reading this book was a life-changing experience for me.

A Must for Your Family!.......2000-10-15
This is the first review I have ever written. My 7 year old daughter and I found this book to be outstanding. The illustrations and text are dynamic. We read this chapter book every evening for a week. My daughter could not wait to go to bed so that we could read the next chapter. Today I am looking for other "Treasure Tree Adventure's" by Dr. Trent. Please read this story, it also makes a great gift for any child.
Book Description
As recently as 1924, a lone Algonquin Indian lived quietly in Pelham Bay Park, a wild and isolated corner of New York City. Joe Two Trees was the last of his people, and this is the gripping story of his bitter struggle, remarkable courage, and constant quest for dignity and peace.
By the 1840s, most of the members of Joe’s Turtle Clan had either been killed or sold into slavery, and by the age of thirteen he was alone in the world. He made his way into Manhattan, but was forced to flee after killing a robber in self defense; from there, he found backbreaking work in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Finally, around the time of the Civil War, Joe realized there was no place for him in the White world, and he returned to his birthplace to live out his life alone—suspended between a lost culture and an alien one. Many years later, as an old man, he entrusted his legacy to the young Boy Scout who became his only friend, and here that young boy’s son passes it on to us.
Theodore Kazimiroff, the son of Joe Two Trees’s young confidant, writes historical, environmental, and natural history articles for several magazines. He lives in Bayville, New York.
Customer Reviews:
One Indian's story.......2007-09-10
I first read this book many years ago and bring it out every so often to refresh Two Trees' persona in my mind. This book is full of the author's love for his subject and he passes this on to the reader with great art. The story is in some ways so terribly sad that it is almost unbearable, but Two Trees and his love for nature and his dog can really only ultimately express joy and wonder. I just love this book and hope everyone who reads it follows Two Trees' wish to pass this extraordinary story along.
A beautiful story..........2003-05-22
Joe Two Trees is the last of his tribe. New York in the early twentieth century is not for him. Or is it? As a native New Yorker with a passion for the past, I loved this beautiful story. Whenever I return home, I can no longer visit the Bronx (especially Pelham Bay) without thinking of Joe and his relationship with Theodore Kazimoroff's father. The writing is lovely, and the story evokes all sorts of feelings at so many levels. It was my Aunt, a former teacher, who told me that I should read this book. It has become one of those novels that I recommend to others regularly.
Sublime.......2003-05-14
Some people talk about spirit like it is taught in "Indian 101", but you can experience something very soulful and ancient in the words and earth here.
A sad and touching tale.......2002-11-22
The Last Algonquin is a sad but heartwarming story about a man and his attempts to come to grips with his place in the world. The fact that this man, Joe Two Trees, is the last of his tribe of the Algonquin's makes his journey that much harder and more interesting. If you are looking for an official history of the American Indians, this isn't the book for you. However, if you are looking for a deep and touching story of one American Indian, and what we as a nation have lost by ignoring the heritage of American Indians, then you will enjoy this book. Mr. Kazimiroff has done an excellent job of preserving the story given to him by his father and keeping the memory of Joe Two Trees and the Algonquin Indians alive.
An Insightful & Fascinating "Hand-Me Down" Story.......2002-04-21
This is a must read, especially for those of us raised in the Pelham Bay section of Bronx. The tale of The Last Algonquin is inspiring and heartwarming. And, I hope that Mr. Kazimiroff realizes that he has given The Bronx, the Algonquin Indians and his father the immortality they truly deserve.
Remember as long as someone tells( hears or reads) this tale, the story of Joe Two Trees will continue to live on among the rocks and trees of Pelham Bay Park.

Book Description
Two young brothers born in Germany were deported with their family to France and held in a detention camp. Their parents were transferred to Rivesaltes. Two years later they were sent to Drancy and from there they were deported to their final destination - Auschwitz. Meanwhile the two brothers were rescued from the detention camp by the OSE (a Jewish organization) and the Quakers. They were shuffled between orphanages in France and Switzerland. Eventually they were separated. After the war Fred, the older brother, made his way to the United States, where he became a rocket scientist. His work brought him in contact with Werner von Braun. The younger brother, Menachem, came to Israel, where he took part in Israel's wars. He raised a family and devoted himself to a career in education.
For many years there was almost no contact between the brothers, but recently they felt a need to talk about their experiences, especially with their grandchildren. They renewed their connection with each other and together they wrote the gripping story of their childhood.
This is one of the most touching memoirs to come to light in recent years. The unusual narrative style, the conversations between the brothers as they attempt to bridge the missing years, their appeal to their grandchildren and in fact to all our grandchildren, cannot fail to move the reader.

A wonderful deck that most may overlook................2006-09-26
Last year when I saw this deck online, something about it called to me. The artwork was somehow comforting. I was going to get it several times and didn't for various reasons. I also adore trees and all the lore, magic and mystery about them. Well I finally got it a few weeks ago and I wish I had listened to my instincts the 1st time!
This deck is gorgeously illustrated, the artwork really jumps out at you. The words on the cards are beautiful and I find with rereading them they are deeply layered and complex and you get more from them each time. The book is small, but packed with wonderful info and spreads....10 in all. I have used about 4 of them so far, and they really give a great reading...true but yet very complex. In the book each card is explained in more detail. They are about the size of tarot cards and are of heavy cardstock so they will stand the test of time, but not too thick so they are unwieldy.
Using this deck has brought me much peace, insights, ideas, comfort and so much more. If you are drawn to this deck do not hesitate to get it, you will love it!
Loved The Concept!!!.......2006-03-31
I love this little book and deck of cards. I can't say enough about the wonderful artwork, the detail about trees, the magic that trees hold and how pleasant the cards are to read.
If you like Tarot cards and are looking for a unique deck to add to your collection, buy these now!

Do we really know what's good for us? "Yes!" the author of this book would yell, and in about as profound and important a way as could possibly be imagined. This is one of a series of books and programs that Marcia Emery has written on the subject of intuitive healing. Her basic premise is that each of us has an inner guide--an "inner physician"--whom we need to learn to access and listen to. Why? Because, says Emery, this inner guide (essentially, our own intuitive mind) can help us maintain health, predict and avert health problems, suggest remedies in times of illness, and steer us towards a healthier way of functioning that will offer long-term prevention.
Emery describes intuition as "that unerring and inexplicable knowing beyond logic and volition. It lies at the roots of spontaneity, humor, creativity, inspiration, and even genius. And it is an especially powerful ally in the healing process." It is how scientists make groundbreaking discoveries, and how native peoples discover healing plants in the wild.
Emery's book is a practical how-to manual that each of us can deploy "to access the wisdom of your mind for greater healing and well-being." She offers tips, techniques, and exercises, such as meditation, affirmations, dreamwork, relaxation, body scans, and word association, together with heartening anecdotes and case studies. The benefits claimed for this approach--from testing medical diagnoses to averting illness--are profound indeed, and this book makes for a user-friendly, thought-provoking guide. --Dan Fielder

Trust Your Intuition!.......2006-02-27
Marcia Emery is a dedicated writer and speaker on the subject of intuition. She developed the first workbook on intuition that was part of a college course. She's not only a great teacher, but her sense of whimsy is evident in her writing. As a documentary producer, I have had the pleasure of interviewing Marcia for my documentary, The Intuitive Factor: Genius or Chance. If you have not read her books, please do. You'll enjoy your style.

Emeryville California.......2004-06-10
Several areas of attitudinal abuse when discussing clients, especially evident during discussions about obesity. I agree with an earlier review that Marcia's spoken voice can be unpleasant.
Same stuff different Author!.......2002-09-10
I was disappointed in this audiobook. I was looking for something refreshing, new. It is the same old stuff packaged
differently.
I found this audio book to be banal and I do wish the author had picked someone else to read this book as her voice does nothing to pull the listener in.
For those who have not read this type of material by many other authors you may pick up some useful information.
Intuition and Healing.......2000-09-14
Dr. Marcia Emery's book is a much needed addition to the literature on Intuitive Healing. It is practical, easy to read, and will guide readers how to access intuition--even those who've never been able to do this before. Pick up this book and learn to tap into the healing power within you. Marcia is a forerunner in the work of intuitive healing, a practitioner of high integrity, with a true love for the healing work. I highly recommend this book!
